I will qualify this post first off, I am 55 years young and 13 plus years post op. I am also a gym rat that works on her figure and my weight. Today my daughter gave me fashion advice that women my age don't and shouldn't wear what she termed booty shorts, no matter how good we may look. I do admit they were a bit tight but that's how I wanted them, but not painted on tight, no camel toe showing.
Now I am 5'6" tall and all of about 125 lbs so I don't feel that I look to bad in tight clothes, that being said I was thinking that maybe she might be right. So I am asking for opinions from all ages about this subject.

Being a bit of a prude,
I'm not sure that anyone, no matter what age, should wear booty shorts. And that's just one thing on a very long list of questionable clothing.
Booty shorts, and other figure hugging/accentuating clothing, are designed for call attention to one's sexuality. What it comes down for me is, if I'm not looking to sell it, I shouldn't advertise it.

The very first thing I learned
when dressing is that if you don't dress appropriately for your age or the occasion people will look twice. Tight clothes may make you feel sexy but make you look like you're trying too hard and this applies to all women. Wear those booty shorts at home around the house but not outside. Better to be thought a tart than dress to prove it.

Just some thoughts
My job requires me to travel about 90% of the time. This is split between air travel and across the road destinations. When I fly, I take the opportunity to 'study' people while waiting for one connection or another. Just like Patricia, you can call me a prude but many women have lost or never been taught how to dress with any class. And yes, booty shorts or exposed leggings to the waist do tend to fall into that class. Sometimes I just want to ask them if they looked in the mirror before they left their home and thought that what they were wearing was a good look for them. I think my mother knew a lot more about me than she ever let on as she would point out a female's outfit and explain simple changes that could be made to do a better job to flatter the person rather than draw attention to them. Her comment was always just because you can, doesn't always mean you should. I congratulate you on being comfortable to be able to do as such. Many of us due to body size (6' 180) or life situations may never have such an opportunity.

I pay no heed at all to any fashion police. I wear what I like, when I like and how I like.
NOBODY BUT NOBODY dictates to me what looks good or looks bad as the following picture clearly demonstrates.
Last Sunday June 19th, I stood totally naked outside Bristol city hall directing traffic whilst acting as a ride marshall for the Bristol Naked Bike Ride. I have to confess, I was wearing a cycle helmet for safety, my cycling shoes and a small bum bag for my phone and purse (wallet to cross-ponders), plus my back pack with my clothes. For all modesty purposes however I was wholly naked! This is a publicity/charity event organised to make motorists aware of cyclists. They certainly noticed us when we were naked so why can't they see us at other times?
400 of us rode naked through the centre of the city and I was one of the ride marshalls. The accompanying photo is proof and it was all perfectly legal!!!!

Kids will always criticize their parents' fashion choices. I hope that it is simply generalized commentary and not targetted to insult you.
It's not as offensive as if you were wearing shorts that were so tight that you could read the date on the quarter in your pocket or so loose that if you turned too quickly you would show everyone your breasts in full....I see that far too often from people age four to 74 in my hometown especially now that the weather is warm.

If you are asking such a question at all...
...you already know the answer. You do not need others to reinforce or to rationalize your insights too. Wear what makes you feel like you (which most of us understand all too well). Be aware though that such advice from anyone must have been extremely hard for them to actually vocalize. Only those truly close to you would have the courage to say what they felt you should hear. What you are describing is much more than a friend's hushed, "You have a little lipstick on your teeth."

If you expected your child to take your words seriously, you need to respect what your adult child says to you. Both parties have best interests at heart.
Gym clothes and exercise wear are designed for specific purposes.
People who have adopted the Athleisure look as their signature are making a statement, too.
Clothes speak before you do or not. It’s your choice.
Shorts??
When I was growing up in the 1950's, shorts were mid thigh whether for boys or girls. That is the length that I like but it is very hard to find them in men's. Partially because because I am not overly tall with a pants inseam of 29 inches. That translates to an inseam of 6 to 8 inches for the length of shorts I like. I have checked women's styles but even some of them are longer than that especially seeing I would need a plus size because I am not slim. And as a passing thought I just saw a picture over on facebook of an older gent in Walmart that had shorts that were short enough that his buns were showing. Now where did I put that brain bleach.
