Having it both ways? The following turned up on MSN website about a pregnant man. It isn't really.

Despite encouraging

Despite encouraging prejudice for their situation,

horrible mistype :X

I read an article about him yesterday ( http://www.alternet.org/reproductivejustice/80450/?comments=... ). It sounded like they've had a really tough time, getting bounced from one doctor to the next to get treatment. Though to be fair, a lot (if not most) of them were probably just plain out of their depth. This doesn't strike me as something that has much in the way of medical precident/research, especially as transmen tend to get the short end of the stick when it comes to trans* related research. Not being able to find a fertility clinic to take their case was also probably more of a liability-risk issue rather than discrimination, but maybe I'm just being less cynical than usual. >.> Still, it's a shame they've been having such a rough time of it. I hope everything works out, with no complications.

I'm a little surprised that msn page has his name, though. I got the impression that he was in stealth in his neighbourhood, and was hiding the pregnancy with a combination of concealing clothing and 'gaining weight'.

Umm... what are you implying?

Are you saying that a Female to Male transsexual is not a man? That's the same as saying a Male to Female transsexual is not a woman. Yes it IS about a pregnant man, I've known other pregnant men, intersex or trans or otherwise. Just because he wasn't born a biological man does NOT make him not a man. Maybe I have misunderstood your message, but please reword it because it would be very offensive to the FtM community.

My two cents

By the standards being used here, then any woman who has had a double mastectomy would be a man. I know several of the psychiatrists I've been to would consider "him" to be a pre-op transsexual.

I'm of two minds about this, I can see valid arguments for either viewpoint. I do know that this situation does press a few buttons. I look at the reverse, and I'm sure that a male who had breast implants and only took minimally-effective drugs to prevent male sexual arousal (such as blood pressure medication) but kept his male genitalia intact would scarcely be viewed as seriously trying to be a woman; especially if 'she' then decided to resume 'his' male 'duties" and sire a child. She certainly would not be able to be legally classified as a female.

Perhaps at some point in the future when organ transplants/cloning/nanites are to the point where any individual can father a child or carry a fetus to term, this whole point will be moot; but in this day and age it isn't. It certainly shouldn't have escaped your attention that the media are more concerned with proving or disproving this story than exploring any legal or social ramifications. Most people would be a lot happier if this were shown to be a hoax.

Your first sentence ignores the fact that the person being discussed went through the legal hoops necessary to be able to marry a woman and live for several years as a man, that's a lot more than getting a mastectomy.

BTW, I personally know several transmen and about half of them are as freaked by the story as most non-lgbts would be. I think that's funny. :)

Gee I didn't think of that! I guess a lot of FtM's would consider childbirth
to be about as inviting as that business from the Aliens movies-
at least when it came to their own bodies.
Vive la difference, I guess...

Maybe a slight exageration

To make a point: this individual did not have what is considered the normal SRS procedure. According to what I read (which admitidly isn't much) he had his breasts renoved and started hormones. After all the hoops I and many I know had to jump through to get even some minimal legal classification as female, I just have a hard time believing all this.

The original story in The Advocate is extremely short on details that would verify this. At a non-tabloid newspaper I'd have a hard time selling this story as is to my editor, he'd be yelling for facts to support the story. The interview I saw with the Advocate's editor says the made a phone call to a physician whose name was supplied by the individual, and that physician verified the story. That's pretty weak.

Until I see some solid proof, I'm reserving judgement. I'm just pointing out a few of the larger holes in this story at this time.

And?

Since when should any of us give a dang what society thinks anyway? I think it's wonderful he's doing that for his wife, who cares if he decided to do that, it's HIS choice. Regardless of what we think, his identity is HIS identity and it's just as valid as any other identity, genetic or otherwise. As long as he's happy, I'm glad for him, and I say if people want to make a fuss over this, I say get a life xD You're not the one who has to go through it.

Who's judging the act?

My questions have to do with the validity of the story as told. It just doesn't add up.
