BC has several authors who write stories with cosplay intertwined in the story line. I doubt anyone else is as clueless as I was when I first read some of those stories. I have run across different sites with pics of cosplay actors-actresses since and finally have an idea of what it means.

is determining which of the female characters are really boys under all the makeup and costume.

The keyword to look for is "crossplay" if you're interested in players who cross gender lines.
My cosplay friends
I've a number of friends on dA that do cos and crosplay and follow them on dA, fb, and their personal websites. You would be amazed at the time, effort, and money they spend to get every little detail correct. I am in awe of them.
Another term to watch for is brolita. These are guys that wear the typical lolita outfits. It is hard to pick them out by looking at them, in many cases they are the most attractive 'girl' in the group. I'm too old to be a loli but wish I'd known about this 30 years ago. So many of the outfits are adorable!
