I've been reading about the new film 'The Danish Girl' which tells the story of Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of gender reassignment surgery in the early years of the twentieth century. It seems that Eddie Redmayne who won an Oscar last year for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking does an amazing job as Lili, and the pictures so far released seem to bear this out. I'm sure there are some people who will say why could Hollywood not have engaged a genuine transgender actor for the role, but perhaps that is a step too far for them at present. Nevertheless it is great to see some serious discussion of transgender issues, something which would have been unheard of not many years ago.
The film will be released soon and I will be interested to read of other people's impression of it when they have seen it.

I noticed

Sammi's picture

on Thursday that 'The Danish Girl' was available on Kindle as a book.
I'm not sure if it is a book based on the film or the biography, and the synopsis doesn't answer that particular question, as the cover Picture is the same as one of the movie posters.

"REMEMBER, No matter where you go, There you are."

The Book Has Been Out for Several Years

The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff was first published in 2000. It is a fictional novel inspired by the true story of Danish painter Einar Wegener and his California-born wife, this tender portrait of a marriage asks "What do you do when someone you love wants to change?".

Some of my US FB friends have seen it already

They all say it is very good.
But I doubt they actually know about the more special connection I have to the theme of the film, so I can only report that those uninvolved find it a good film.

it is based on a book written from her journals

called, man to woman, written in 1933. this is probably the best info if you are looking for factual/firsthand info.

yes the movie was very good, take tissues. as to having a trans person play her, we only have a few trans actresses, and none of that star level, to anchor a movie on an "uncomfortable" subject for most people, if they did, it might not have seen the light of day, at least not as a major motion picture. hopefully in a few years we will.

Any transgender actresses in Hollywood(land Co)

I wonder how many transgendered actors there are. And if there are some, how many have the skill of Eddie Redmayne ?
More to the point, I guess, if there are any tg actresses, would they wish to look like a man again ?
Through the transition from male to female ?
