The last chapter has 3000 reads and no comments which is pretty sad. It is a well written "who done it" story. Charlotte Dickles is an exceptional "gotchu" writer in the style of, if one figures it out before the end they have to be psychic. When writers post stories on Big Closet, Fiction Mania or any of the freebie sites their only payment is gratification from the readers who leave comments. The numbers such as 3000 readers is nice but still just numbers.

To be fair to other readers and authors who did NOT leave a comment. I didn't either. The link for comments has changed and I'm locked out. Kinda like driving to the graduation party in the old pickup and instead of dress and heels I'm wearing the same clothes I wore when I finished milking. I feel like everyone will be happy if I don't join in.

Not every story I bounce into gets a read nor a comment. The story might have been a little risk for my taste and I bail out after a couple pages without saying anything. If I stay for the entertainment, I usually leave a positive or suggestive comment. After all, the writer blessed me with hours, days, weeks, maybe months of their time as they wrote the story.

That story and several other of Charlotte's stories were marked as comments being turned off. No one could leave a comment. Some authors make this choice.

Why I turn off public comments

Hi Barb

I'm really pleased you enjoyed the story, as have many others. Nowadays, I post all my stories with public comments turned off. People can still comment by PM, and many do. I always make a point of replying and will often get into ongoing conversations, in my view of far more value than public comments.

I am quite sensitive to adverse criticisms publicly posted against a story like graffiti on a wall. Private criticisms are entirely different, and compliments are just as good whether publicly or privately posted.

I measure the success of my stories by the number of kudos points, a far more objective measurement than counting the number of comments, which is a pretty meaningless number.

Far too many authors on this site have been upset because of a lack of comments or by adverse criticism. Personally, I think all comments should be privately made. I also feel the number of kudos points should also be private. Let's get out of feeling inadequate because we don't all get as many comments or kudos as someone else.

I write because writing's so much fun. If just one other person finds my story as enjoyable, then that's great. But it's really brilliant when lots of people like you are getting enjoyment out of it.

Thanks for springing to my defence and enjoy your reading.

Best wishes

Charlotte
