It's also due
to the legacy of the British Empire that so many African countries are so homophobic, not helped by Evangelists from the US and elsewhere. It seems ridiculous today to persecute people for their sexuality or their gender expression, but that right is relatively recent and hard won, and unfortunately, not universal. I hope one day it will be but it may prove a vain one.
