I was reminded of this story while reading,

certain things were mentioned and the old grey matter began to put pieces together.

1.) Multiple types of magic
2.) main character Excels at Martial Arts (Can't remember if academically excels)
3.) Walking home sees two young boys, both maybe 5 or 6 years old, playing catch when the local obnoxious neighbours
dog escapes and proceeds to attack the two young boys, main character becomes the hero as he saves the boys.
(cant remember breed of dog)
4.) main character receives an award for bravery, and a mystery benefactor gives a car as a reward for selflessness.
5.) main character mother is a witch, and at certain age character has sex change due to magic, cant remember the
reason but I think that is was done for characters protection.
6.) Character ends up taking ballet with a failed ballerina that treats her students with contempt, so main character
quits ballet and returns to Martial Arts at old dojo.
7.) strange thing is that the car that was given is still there and character begins to question reality.
8.) at the dojo other students begin to make fun of main character for ballet until, she challenges them to a race
which proves to the other students that although ballet is an art form is also builds athletic endurance, as main
character wins the race.

the above points may not be in order and I may also have confused several stories, also I am unable to remember if I was able to read the whole story or if it had been completed.
I hope that writing this not only enables me to solve this mystery, but also for others to find enjoyment of a forgotten story or author!!!!
