I'd never heard of Tom Grace until he became Laura, but apparently she's some sort of pop singer with a band I've still never heard of and according to this article, some sort of trans icon. For those interested she's making some films about trans people for AOL.

Transgender Dysphoria Blues
I came across this band on You Tube last year. They're definitely more punk than powerpop.
Here are two of the band being interviewed on a radio station.

Laura is not alone.
Several years ago, in 2003, a member of Jethro Tull transitioned. David Palmer became Dee Palmer, having been diagnosed as transgendered and intersexed, and having "genital ambiguity."

Against Me! is generally considered "Folk Punk"
They're another band that's toiled for years to finally get a record deal. A good band, but sadly would not have received the level of attention they currently enjoy without the notoriety of their singer/songwriter/rhythm guitarist's transition.
