City Rat Chp. 2

Printer-friendly version

Tonya wakes up the next morning feeling sore. She gets up out of bed and walks into the kitchen to grab some breakfast. She wonders what she should do today as she grabs the container that had her favorite cereal in it. She grabs a bowl and the milk from the refrigerator.

She sits down at the small kitchen table. She picked it up at a yard sale and had her friend Richie bring it to her building. It was an old diner table from a soda shop that had been refurbished.

She listens to the news while enjoying a bowl of cereal. She wanted to know what the weather was going to be like for the next few days. After Tonya finishes her breakfast and rinses out her cereal bowl. She heads back to her bedroom and changes out of her nightgown. She puts on a pair of faded blue jeans and a black t-shirt that had a picture of an anime girl on a skateboard.

She puts on a baseball cap that had Cruz’s Skate Shop printed on it. She got the cap for free when she bought some parts for her skateboard.
She takes a twenty from petty cash and tucks it into her front pockets. She checks how she looks, before leaving on her skateboard.

The skate park wasn’t far from the gas station. She skates over to the park and notices none of her friends or anyone else was there. She loved that the city built this park so close to her neighborhood. She puts her earplugs in and listens to some music, while she practices.

She has been trying to master a move she has been working on for a while. Normally, she didn’t have a problem with mastering a move, but for some reason. She was having a problem with this move.

Tonya tries the move again and messes it up. She gets up and tries it again and again. She stops for a while and wonders what she is doing wrong.

“You might want to try it a different way.” Anton had found out where Tonya lived and staked her place out this morning.

He followed her to the skate park and watched her from the parking lot as she practiced. He noticed that she was having problems with
mastering a move. He was no skate expert, but she did goggle different skate moves and found the one she was trying to master.

Tonya looks up at the gentleman that saved her the other day. She had no idea who he was “are you following me?”

“No, but I do have an invested interest in making sure you are safe and sound. After all, I did save your life the other day.” A smile appears on Anton’s face.

“Thank you for that. Were you following me then?” Tonya was curious about who this man is.

“I was enjoying a day with my girlfriend when I spotted the boat you were on. It looked like it was having trouble.” Anton didn’t tell Tinsley the real reason why he was going sailing.

“So, why are you here now?” Tonya was curious.

“I was wondering why you were on that boat with those two guys.” Anton found out that the boat was registered to Mr. Jamil Jones.

When he searched for Mr. Jones. He found out that he didn’t exist. All the information on the registration of the boat was false.

“I wanted to go boating, but I don’t know how to operate a boat. So, Anthony said he would be willing to take me boating. I didn’t know about his friend going with us until I showed up at the marina where the boat is kept.” Tonya didn’t know about Enzo being there.

“Did you know the other fellow?” Anton watched Tonya’s reaction.

“No, I had never met him before. All I do know, things started getting weird after I was given a soda. Enzo came into the cabin I was in changing and ripped my swimsuit off me.” Tonya shivers from the memory.

“You do know that the other guy, Anthony works for Marcus Antonius, don’t you?”

“Yes, I know and he has never acted like that before around me.” Tonya has known Anthony for a while, and she has never seen him act this way before.

“That brings up another question. What is your connection to Marcus Antonius?” Anton might be playing his hand too soon.

Tonya looks at the guy who saved her “you know, you never told me your name.”

“It’s Anton Allister.”

“Are you a cop or federal agent, Mr. Allister?” Tonya wanted to know why he was interested in her connection to Marcus.

“I’m a federal agent.”

“And let me guess, you’re investigating Marcus Antonius?” Tonya watches Anton.

“Yes, I am and anything you can tell me about him would be helpful.”

“Sorry, you’re barking up the wrong tree, Mr. Allister.” Tonya wouldn’t betray Mr. Antonius.

“Why are you saying that, Tonya?” Anton looks at the young woman.

“Because you are. I suggest you find someone else to tell you about Mr. Antonius.” Tonya puts her skateboard down and starts going back and forth down in the pit.

She builds up enough momentum to shoot up out of the pit. She lands on the top and looks at Mr. Allister “as for my relationship with Mr. Antonius. He’s like a father to me. So, I won’t betray him.”

Tonya turns around on the skateboard and skate-off. She wasn’t going to betray the trust Mr. Antonius has put in her. She skates away from the skate park.

Anton watches as Tonya skates off. He turns around and walks back to his car. He’ll see what other lead he can dig up.

Tonya skates towards the downtown district. One of her favorite food trucks was doing business down there. After twenty minutes of skating, she arrives and spots her favorite food truck. It already had a line. She skates up to the line and claims a spot. She listens as people place their orders. She already knew what she wanted.

When it was her time to place her order, she noticed Maria was taking the orders. She spots Maria’s boyfriend behind Maria on the grill.

“Tonya, what brings you here today?” Maria knew Tonya loved the food she and her boyfriend had.

“I was in the neighborhood and thought I drop by.”

“You know, you’re a terrible liar.” Maria knew why Tonya was here.

“Hey, I’m good at lying.” A smile appears on Tonya’s face.

“Right, so, let me guess what you want today.” Maria thinks for a few seconds.

“You know I always get the cheesy steak sub from you.” Tonya loved the cheesy sub with crinkle fries.

“I know. Is there anything else?” Maria writes the order down.

“Nope, I’m good.”

“It will be fifteen minutes. You have several orders ahead of you.”

“That’s fine.” Tonya pulls the twenty dollars bill out and pays for her meal.

While Tonya is waiting for her food. She practices some simple tricks on her skateboard away from the crowd. She wonders what brings of the federal government Mr. Allister worked for? He didn’t act like an FBI agent or a DEA agent.

After about ten minutes, Maria calls out Tonya’s number. Tonya walks up to Maria “thanks, Maria.”

“You’re welcome, Tonya. Enjoy.” Maria grabs the next order.

Tonya walks over to a bench and sits down to eat her sub.
