What Maisie Knew: A Marcie Donner Story, by Kaleigh Way

9. Detention!?

Monday morning, both mothers drove us to school. Well, Maisie's mother did the actual driving. My mother was a passenger. The woman were chatting away nonstop.

"Look at them! They're just giddy!" Maisie whispered to me. Aloud, in the tone of a mother talking to children, she told them, "Now don't you girls get in any trouble while we're away."

Mom giggled, but Maisie's mother didn't react, aside from a little twitch in her jaw.

"How come Susan didn't come with us?" I asked.

Maisie's mother glanced at me in the mirror before replying. "Her mother's not very social," she sighed. "Lord knows I've tried."

"I hate to agree with my mother," Maisie commented, "but it's true. Susan's mother hardly lets her out of the house. She makes her study all the time. Chinese," she said, as if the last word explained everything.

When I frowned, she explained, "Chinese families have this work ethic, you know? Susan has to get A-plus in everything and go to an Ivy-League school. All work and no play. She has to go straight home after school."

"That doesn't sound so bad," my mother said.

"Maisie, you're giving her ideas!" I cautioned, and made a big-eyed cut it out face. Maisie grinned.

As soon as the car stopped, the two of us barrelled out of the car and ran up the walk before the Moms could get out any last motherly words.

"Oh my God!" I told her. "It's bad enough she wants to send me here..."

"Oh, don't worry," Maisie laughed. "I don't see the Ivy League in your future!"

I stopped and stared at her, and said in a voice full of offended irony, "Oh, thank you very much, Maisie Beale, for that vote of confidence! It's not like you were being rude or anything!"

"I'm just kidding, you goof!" she said with a smile. Then she shouted, "Last one in the door is a rotten egg!"

We were laughing as we fell through the front door, but at the sight of Sister Honororia, we stopped and fell silent. "Good morning, sister," we sang out together.

"Good morning, Margaret, Marcella," she said. "I hope you two weren't tearing up the street like a pair of hooligans." Without waiting for an answer, she added, "Remember: virtuous and lady-like behavior." Then she turned her back to us so she could look down the hallway. Maisie stuck her tongue out.

I grinned until Sister Honororia said, "Keep your tongue inside your head, Margaret."

Maisie frowned, shook her head and gave me a shrug that asked How does she know?

"I know everything that goes on in this school," Honororia replied, still with her back to us.

Maisie gawked at the woman's back, astonished.

"Don't gawk," the nun commanded.

I pulled on Maisie's arm and we left.

"How did she know?" Maisie asked, once we were safely out of earshot.

"There must be a reflection someplace," I said. "We can check on it later."

As we walked into homeroom, a friendly voice called, "Hey, new girl!" It was an Asian girl with long black hair and a nice smile.

"Susan?" I asked. She nodded and held out her hand. We shook.

I made a mental note that girls shook hands sitting down. I'd have to get used to not jumping up.

"Welcome to BYHS," she said as she rolled her eyes.

"Now there's three of us," Maisie said. "We can be a gang."

"Oh, but there's zero tolerance for that!" I quipped.

The three of us sat together, chatting and laughing, while a frumpy, friendly-looking woman unloaded her briefcase onto the teacher's desk. She looked around the room and when her eyes landed on me she waved, smiling. I waved back.

"That's Mrs. Wix," Susan explained. "English teacher, and our homeroom teacher."

The PA crackled to life, and led the entire school in a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Then it said, "Will Marcella Donner please report to the principal's office? Marcella Donner to the principal's office." Mrs. Wix gave me a wry grin, and whispered, "We'll introduce ourselves when you get back."

As I walked through the empty halls, I wondered why I was being called. It couldn't be for running up the walk. If *that* was the problem, Maisie would have been called, too. Then again, maybe there wasn't a problem. Maybe there was some kind of paperwork or forms I had to bring home, just because I was new. Whatever it was, it couldn't be anything bad.

The stairwell and the hallway echoed with the announcements. The last echoes where fading as I entered the principal's outer office. Sister Honororia was waiting at the door of her inner office. She beckoned, and I followed.

"I daresay you know why you're here," she said, after she shut the door and we both sat down.

"No, sister," I replied, and checked my posture. The nun gave me a once-over, but didn't correct anything.

"I am glad to see that you lengthened your skirt," she commented. "Did you do it yourself?"

"Yes, sister. My mother showed me how."

"Good. Cultivate a teachable spirit. Now to the business at hand. You won't be surprised that I know about your exploit at the bank on Friday."

"No, sister."

She nodded. "I asked you to come here so I could tell you that you will have detention for the next two weeks. Normally a student would be expelled or at least suspended for doing what you did, but you're new here, and I want to give you a chance."

I was shocked. I opened my mouth and shut it, and my body twitched several times. Detention?

My first impulse was to protest that I'd did nothing wrong. However, I'd already had *that* argument with my mother — twice — and once with my father. So I waited for my second reaction, which was try to bend without breaking. I swallowed hard and said, "Thank you, sister."

Her mouth worked a little. Had she been hoping for a fight? For a protest? Was she disappointed that I wasn't crushed or angry or upset? She watched me closely, waiting for the faintest hint of battle.

When none came, she licked her lips. "Good then. You can return to class."

When I put my hand on the doorknob, I was struck by an idea. I turned around and asked, "Sister, can I ask your advice on something?"

"Certainly," she said, in a crisp, no-nonsense voice. She was ready to parry any thrust I could possibly give. But I didn't give one.

"What would you have done, if you had been in my position?"

"There at the bank?"

"Yes."

"Yes, sister," she corrected.

"Yes, sister," I repeated.

"Had I been in your predicament," she replied, "I would have prayed for the grace of God." She pursed her lips. "I certainly wouldn't have fought, like a common hooligan. You put yourself and everyone in that bank in great danger by doing that. Especially when you consider that you were wearing your school uniform. That alone should have helped you remember how you need to comport yourself."

I nodded. "Thank you, sister."

"You're welcome, Marcella."

"WHAT!?" Maisie shouted, when I returned to class and told her and Susan. Then, in a lower voice, "Detention!?"

"Maisie?" Mrs. Wix said.

"Sorry, Mrs. Wix." Maisie replied. "I was just surprised by something."

Mrs. Wix nodded, as if she didn't mind.

Maisie silently mouthed That's insane!

Susan gave me a smile of rueful commiseration.

"Everyone, we have a new student with us today: Marcella — or do you go by 'Marcie'?" I nodded, so she went on, "Marcie Donner, who just moved here from California. I guess you came for the snow, which is pretty early this year, hmm? Please make her welcome, girls."

I smiled and gave a little wave as I looked around the room. I was surprised to see that maybe three-quarters of the girls were Black. I guess I'll see what it's like to be in the minority, I said to myself.

Mrs. Wix picked up a book and said, "Today we'll start off with one of my favorites," and her fingers dug into the pages just in front of a tasseled bookmark.

I silently sighed to myself. It was strange that here I was, starting out again, my first day at school, with two weeks of detention. I thought about what the nun had said, about not fighting. There was no way I could do that. Honestly, being expelled from BYHS seemed like a small price to pay for staying alive.

YEAH!

I'm liking Sister Honoria allready :)

Give Marcie some drawn lines in the sand, make her learn to stay there, then once she had learned, that, to allow her to bend them a little bit.

good episode, Kaleigh

A.A.

No way.

I'm not. Self-defense is never something to criticize. Especially not when Sister Honoria got it from a second-hand account. Foolishness like that, punishing someone for taking action to protect themselves will not make a situation better, nor will praying for deliverance. After all, "God helps those who help themselves."

Agreed

That mindset is what allows girls to be taken and raped. It's foolish and uncaring of the victim.

Sister Horror-what'sherface

Is a dragon and should be taught a lesson-dozy trout.

I still say well done Marcie!

NB

Jessica
I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way.

Hmmm

"God helps those who help themselves."

The meek will inherit the earth

Perhaps , but, I've found in my life's journeys, you only get taken advantage of, run over, or, otherwise hurt.

I dont subscribe to that belief. NOR, do I condone what Marcie did, however, it appears writer sugests she least thought thru what she did in her belief the police would do what they did. She did the right thing but it could of gone bad as easily as it went good.

Detention - well she was in school uniform, and whether she knew the rules or not, ignorance won't win this one. And YES Private schools can do what was imposed. NO - I'm not saying it was RIGHT, but it's within the rules/guidlines reguardless.

Personally as a parent I'd yank my child out of that school and find another.

ME - I'm a post-op TS nearing 60, I've studied martial arts since I was three, If I'd been her I'd prob done something simularly stupid.
OH YEA - this is my mantra yet again. And it def. applys here -

when you choose an action --- you choose the consequences of that action also

when you desired a consequence --- you had dammed well better take an
action that would create it

Re: No way

I agree with your comment. After Sister Honororia gave the detention, I would have told her off, said no way in hell, and left the school, with no intention of returning, EVER. Punishing someone for defending oneself is inappropriate, especially when it is extremely clear that NOT having defended herself would very likely have resulted in Marcie being beaten, likely raped, and very likely killed.

good little hostage

dont fight, be a good little hostage for the bad guy. dont fight to stay alive. thats Sister Honororia. wow how silly is she and her father or mother wont back her up. I love how its progressing kaleith even if Marcies parents and Sister Honororia are irritating me now.
Not all girls are so ladylike either. If i remember right, there was a teenage French girl during the middle ages that fraught and bawd alot. Her actions wernt so appreciated by the church at the time and they and the inquisition killed her. but years later, she was canonized as a saint. she was Jeanne dArk

Sister Honororia has credentials

Sister Honororia has very good credentials. She was on the security advisory staff for Bethlehem, back before all the Christians there were killed or driven off making way for the peace loving practitioners of The Religion of Peaceâ„¢. She is still on an advisory board that no less than the Prime Minister of Israel pays close heed to.

Do you have such credentials? Until you do, then you cannot criticize her for any position she espouses. (and no, the bodycount of her positions only counts against conservative positions)

I'm pretty sure that was

I'm pretty sure that was intended as sarcasm, though it can be tough to tell.

Sister Queeg

The good sister is clearly insane with power.

Awaiting further developments with great interest...

Nice reference Pippa...

Sister H. certainly seems to fit the stereotype of Lt. Bligh.

Let's just hope this doesn't end up Pictern Island....

This Principal isn't her pal. :-)

Detention for activities totally unassociated with the school. What a hoot! I wonder what the "bank president" will think about her being "punished"... Maybe reconsideration of Sister H's Loan application? Nah. Too petty, like Sister H...

Susan seems very nice. :-) I'm looking forward to seeing more of her. And watching Marcie 'bend' is refreshing.

I'm looking forward to seeing how things shape up.

Annette.

Unfortunately, since I'm

Unfortunately, since I'm pretty sure this is a private school, they can get away with things that would be illegal otherwise.

However, I agree with you in one respect. Marcie is not going to take this lying down.

Heh...

I went to a English public school (thats a fee paying school) and got kicked out for doing things outside of school...

If Marcie becomes known as a girl from the school and is getting into non proscribed activities outside of the school then I would expect the school to make a stand over them...

In this instance however she should have been lauded as a heroine rather than punished.

The Legendary Lost Ninja

Shades of Gilmore

The Gilmore Girls, that is. Marcie, Maisie, and Susan already strike me very much as fitting into the roles of Rory, Paris, and Lane.

Tickertape Parade

I can see it all now Marcie marches back to gonereas office tells the old bat she will not stay for detention so she had better just expel her. honnerrera complyes she goes out the doores walks to the bank where she tallks to the manager he calls the news the papers and tv people show up record her ackuzations agenst MOM. the NUN,her brouther BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. ther goes my alarm
wonderfull story please keep it going .
Melissa C

Marcie is already plotting ...

not that she did this before, but now she is.
That really makes me wonder why she asked Sister H. what she would have done. She could have guessed that reaction so there must have been more behind it.

I get the feeling that Marcie By-Chance-Superhero will turn smart planing and ploting super brankster. Maisie would certainly encourage that. However we have yet to see how susan fits into the picture.

Kaleigh you certainly never let it get borning

thanks so much for that

Detention??

That ****** giving Marcie detention for something not related to school is an abuse of power. I am waiting for Marcie to lead an in school revolt against her now and whan she does, I suspect that there will be a few skeletons in the sisters closet.
May Your Light Forever Shine

May Your Light Forever Shine

NOT a public school

All of these complaints about being punished for outside of school. It's COMMON for that to happen when it's a private school. Most of the time, granted, it's only while you're in the school uniform -- which Marcie WAS!

I don't agree that she was to blame, at all, but the objection to the school taking an interest into how their students are viewed is unfounded.

But Marcie has never attended a private school

...so she is only used to the administration at least paying lip service to "being fair". What to do?

The local paper is going to try and interview her.

It would not be much of a stretch to Marcie to restate Sister Honororia's statement as " What I did to try and make sure I was not killed was wrong according to Sister Honororia. I was supposed to passively go along and just hope that God (personally) intervened to keep me from being killed or worse."

Catholic schools are pretty well set for day to day expenses, between tuition and ongoing donations. All capital expenses are obtained by collecting extra donations now.
I was in Clearwater Florida when CCC wanted to expand. Hulk Hogan led the fund raising drive as his daughter would only get in if the size of the school was increased. During the drive it came up that there had been ongoing donations, some large, towards an expansion. Since they were not yet ready to break ground, the donations were sent up to headquarters LIKE USUAL where they apparently evaporated, and the full amount was going to have to be raised.
Again in that case.

Donors might not be happy with Sister Honororia's attitudes, and I see her as somebody who would on principle never bend for anything but a personal intervention by one of the Trinity.

More conflict.

I wonder if

Angharad's picture

at some point in the future our most favourite, brawling hooligan will save either our least favourite Nunk, or her dozy brother or maybe the whole school. Whereupon a sudden change of heart will occur. Before that however, prepare for several clashes.

Another good episode Kaleigh.

Angharad

Angharad

Almost

Given the way Kaleigh has been playing the story so far, I'm going to say that all is possible, maybe even probable. Marcie could save Sister Queeg, or Officer Barney Fife, or the whole school or planet for that matter. However, with one glaring exception to your scenario... Should any of that happen all you could count on from Sister Queeg is not gratitude, or a change of heart, but 3 months of detention! I don't think she'd get expelled, because there's something of a sadistic streak there that could only be sated by keeping the girl under her thumb, or ruler, as the case might be.

What is interesting here and doesn't seem to be fitting into the comments much, is one little fact that one would think would give the good Sister about four hemorrhages. Marcie, lest we forget for even a moment, is the errant owner of at least part of a set of male genitalia. (I can't remember if the head of the school is in on this little ruse or not. If she were, wouldn't she have known that the chance of Marcie being killed by her abductor would have been several times higher if he had chosen to try molesting her after fleeing the bank?)

P.S. C'mon, Kaleigh. I'm still waiting. Isn't there an outstanding reward out there for the capture of the bandito? "Gee, I'm sorry. I can't attend the award ceremony, Mr. Police Chief. Your officer's sister has me doing detention for my part in the capture, and she'd probably triple it if I get any publicity. By the way, could you please ask him to stop being so nasty to me?"

The school doesn't know

Marcie and her father discussed this in chapter 47 of Rules Are Rules.

If you mean the reward money from California, the ceremony would have been in California. Her mother told her on the plane in chapter one that the people were going to send the money, since Marcie wouldn't be available for a ceremony.

ANOTHER Reward

No, not the one for the apprehension of the kidnap/molestor ring in California. I was speculating that this bank robber you drew us a picture of as a cool, hardened, experienced robber type, was perhaps wanted elsewhere for similar prior crimes and maybe there was some reward out for his arrest. This would be in addition the local bank's cash recovery reward.

She can kiss my ... ! ! !

On the other hand, reluctantly, I have to admitt that there is a certain logic to the sister's statement. An accidental discharge of a firearm can easily cause unwanted injuries.

I've been shot at and had guns pointed at me. It did not really seem to upset me. Though, recently I had it proven to me that I mentally check out sometimes. I have no idea what would have happened.

It seems that Marcie's actions were entirely logical to me. Still, I'd have expected an accidental discharge.

Very nice writing though.

Gwen

Well, I agree that attacking

Well, I agree that attacking someone who has a gun is generally not a good idea. In real life, it's as likely to get you dead as anything. However, I don't think two weeks of detention is going to force Marcie to change her tune. If anything, I'd suspect the opposite.

The standard rule when threatened by a robbery is to do whatever the robber wants. Money is worthless when compared to a human life. However, in this specific case, Marcie was probably the only person who could have done anything, and a hostage situation is a lot different than a standard robbery. If Marcie had gone along with the bank robber, she would have been utterly powerless, and that's never a good situation to be in.

I don't think it was totally inappropriate for Marcie to be disciplined somehow, but it needs to be in a way that's effective, which detention is generally not.

Usually your right

it would be if she were alone but when she was covered by cops and hes leading her away from them to a more private place, the split second she had the gun off her was all police needed to move in. She did the right thing. In this world the right thing often gets punished.
I agree totally with Marcie. you want to agree and give a man with a gun what he wants but if he wants to take you from a public place to a private place, Do anything you can to avoid that. Thats when you want to act.

Statistically

If you let a gunman escape with a hostage, the hostage is killed, raped, or both. This is why in every police drama, they don't let them leave.

Some observations

Some observations:

1. Sister Honororia had warned Marcie to act more ladylike or to expect some consequence. Therefore, detention should not have been a surprise to anyone used to a disciplined standard. It is like in the military where in uniform, even off duty, you reflect upon your unit.

2. We generally live in a patriarchal society, fostered by various religious dogmas. Fortunately Marcie is only having to suffer a Catholic school, can you imagine her in an Islamic environment. Personally though, I don't see the virtue in being demure or stoic, unless you see merit in being viewed as a victim.

3. At first, I thought these postings were getting shorter, but their not. Nevertheless, the reading of them almost give a flash image of the characters. Serializations drive me up the wall, I don't have a lot of patience with them as I can't maintain a connection with the story's protagonist. I read Rules Are Rules as a completed work and enjoyed it very much as I was able to submerse myself into the story and into Marcie's character. Maybe I'll have to forego this story for a while to get the same appreciation. I'm sure I will enjoy it as much then as a longer piece. It certainly is worth the read.

Yes

it wasnt a surprise to me. I fully expected something unplesant. not 2 whole weeks though but what ever. Its still unfair. If she didnt do anything, the story might have ended. How can it go on without marcie.
Yes worth the read. Good kaleith. Dont let people upset you. there are enough here that adore your posts. :))

Detention

I'm waiting for Marcie to just not show up for detention. What are they gonna do? Suspend her and let her get away with it? Expel her and make her go to a different school and let her get away with it? Explain to the press and all the parents their reasoning behind the detention when she did nothing wrong. Unless you are a professional victim, doing anything, and unexpected is best, is better than nothing, especially since she had the cops right there. There just might be a massive reorganizing at the school. Or she might have to put up with the crap as they snipe at her below detection levels.

I'm seeing Marcie ...

... sort of like the Steve McQueen character in The Great Escape. She will do what she must do in order to be who she is, and take her punishment every time it's meted out. To be who she is, she will pay the price -- she just won't change. Perhaps that's what her old principal meant by learning to bend without breaking.

I think if Marcie took this approach, it would frustrate the hell out of Sister Gonorrhea. After all, she's hell bent on punishing our girl no matter what, so if it doesn't break her, it'll drive the principal crazy!

I can't wait to watch. *grin*

Keep 'em coming, Kaleigh!

The Cooler King

Interesting comparison. I can tell you that Marcie won't ride off on a motorcycle at the end, though.

Sometimes I've had Cool Hand Luke in mind.

But things will be changing soon, and you'll forget all about detention.

actually the school being

actually the school being private and all is in their right to do anything short of touch the child that they want to. the child and the parant sign away their rights to a lot of stuff during all the paper work that they sign. not saying that it is right but i went to a private school and remember sign stuff like that it all depends on what is in the handbook.

that being said it kind of creepy the way the nun was licking her lip at a student. and a child this day and age should not be taught to let them selves be taken that is wrong. what is this school trying to put out, victims?

Lip-licking

There are ways and ways of licking one's lips. It's usually *not* suggestive, and I didn't mean for it to be here.

It still can be creepy, though!

The school

"what is this school trying to put out, victims?"

THIS is exactly what I see the Blessed Yvette school producing, girls who will do nothing and die rather than fight to survive. If I had been in such a school, as soon as I knew that, I would have left and never returned, I'd be demanding to be transferred to a different school.

I love Nuns..., I do!

Did that sound sincere?

I'm having some trouble reading this, but I find it to be dead on. I can only say, that I believe that Kaleigh wants to feel the inequity in this, and she surely does.
Nice Job, Kaleigh. A very good episode.

As for Marcie Saving Sister Honeraria at some later time, Angharad, then again perhaps she won't.

Pippa K's comment is the one that comes closest to my thoughts. I know that the
super hero aspects are entertaining, so I'm happy just to see where Kaleigh leads us.

As for the other discussion. It's simple, from what I understand. Give them the money, and anything you have, but do not let them take you away. If I remember correctly, that the advice the experts give is to break free and run away. If you can get a few steps away, your chances of dying, even if they shoot you are supposed to be significantly less than if they take you away. You are better off, running away. Sadly,
many people who are abducted that way are killed. The actual odds are like five to ten times better to let them shoot at you as you run away.

Good story, Kaleigh.

Great stuff

I liked all the comments so far and the reference to old films like Mutiny on the Bounty -- it's Picarn Island by the way -- and The Great Escape.

As to Sister Gonorrhea -- Randalynn, I LOVE that one having gone to public grade school across the street from a grade 1 through 8 Catholic school. I prefer that old crime triller with a young Richard Widmark shoving an invalid grandmother in a wheel chair down a steep stairs to her death, I picture Sister Honoria in that chair and her son, sorry, brother as the psycho killer Widmark played. Not that I harbor old Sister Honwhoria any ill will.

If this is her idea of teaching displine and a proper femine attitude she is a sick old biddy. One of you had it on the nose, she wants to raise a generation of easy rape victims.

Ooooh I must have a LOT of frustration saved up from serving bank customers.

Please ignor all I said, great stuff as usual.

John in Wauwatosa

Clever girl!

He said, just before the velociraptor tore his head off... The world is a nasty place out there in the wild, and Marcie knows that; other characters in Kaleigh's wonderful story might live in fear of the world, but I think they don't get it the way Marcie does - she's cool, calm and collected in the face of an emergency, although she might not think out all the options - who can? Only people with the convenience of 20/20 vision, or armchair warriors.

Marcie turned the conversation on Sister H., now Marcie knows that her favorite nun's take on reality is oh, quite sheltered. Marcie knew what the reality of the situation was, what her chances likely were if taken hostage; Sister H. is living in a fantasy/protected world, and I get the feeling that, although she has a good heart, she's assuming that Marcie is guilty of pride - and that this is what's getting Marcie into constant trouble. We, of course, know that this is not Marcie's stance, which is why she'll outlast the nunnery's punishment - she's stronger than they'll give her credit for. Since Sis. H. is no dunce, however. I've the feeling that it's only a matter of time before she catches on to Marcie's true nature...

He conquers who endures. ~ Persius

And remember...

... she got that advice from her previous principal, who warned her about Honoraria.

scary

Just scary, and sick sick sick. I mean, I love Marcie, so I'm going to keep reading, but I'm getting an actual physically ill level of disgust from the situation she's landed in this time. Pushes too many of my personal buttons about restriction of personal freedoms I guess. I have this dreadful feeling that it's going to be prolonged too as she learns to go with the flow. Girl is flexible enough, somebody needs to teach her that breaking gives you nice splintery bits to stab them in the eyes with, maybe that's Maisie's job. Sometimes compromise is just another word for surrender.

JL

Well Sister it's like this...

Sister: Young lady do you have an explaination for your actions at the bank?
Marcie: It was just karma, so it’s not my fault.
Sister: What does karma have to do with following my orders?
Marcie: Well Sister, my karma ran over your dogma.

The power of prayer

If Sister Horror has such a high expectations from prayers, why does she give Marcie detention instead of praying that she will start behave properly ?
