Anime is an art form, specifically animation, that includes all genres found in cinema, but it can be mistakenly classified as a genre. In Japanese, the term anime refers to all forms of animation from around the world. In English, anime (/ˈænəˌmeɪ/) is more restrictively used to denote a "Japanese-style animated film or television entertainment" or as "a style of animation created in Japan".
Anime are often classified by target demographic, including kodomo (children's), shōjo (girls'), shōnen (boys') and a diverse range of genres targeting an adult audience. Shoujo and shounen anime sometimes contain elements popular with children of both sexes in an attempt to gain crossover appeal. Adult anime may feature a slower pace or greater plot complexity that younger audiences typically find unappealing, as well as adult themes and situations
A little explanation as to those who have not seen Anime, or have a misunderstanding either through similar shows on television.(Pokemon's or Naruto) Many who I have spoken to believe it to be only for children but that's further from the truth. It's an art form in which the director has decided to use animation as opposed to live-action.
In case you have missed it Your Name (Japanese: 君の名は。 Hepburn: Kimi no Na wa.?) written and directed by Makoto Shinkai became the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, and the highest-grossing anime film worldwide. I am not even going to guess how the Acadamy Awards missed this one.
The story is about a high school girl in rural Japan and a high school boy in Tokyo who swap bodies. There are comedic elements as well and the supernatural but at its heart its a romance.
If you have thought about giving anime a try or looking for a really good story go out and see Your Name. It's breathtaking work of art that's both beautiful and touching.
if you're new to anime see it dubbed, yes it's in English. Old veterans might like the sub. I saw the sub but plan on seeing the dubbed.

I saw the subbed version
It was excellent. I heard parts of the dubbed version online and the voice actors are doing a credible job of translating the emotional charge of the characters. I may go see it again, dubbed this time.
It's a good story. The transgender part is integral to the story but not the whole story.

Also saw subbed version
I also saw the subbed version... despite thinking the theater was showing the dubbed version at the time I went. If you want to see it dubbed, CALL THE THEATER FIRST AND CONFIRM WHAT SHOWINGS ARE DUBBED! Showings may not indicate which is which (for the one I went to, it did not when I bought tickets online). When I went, there were maybe 10-15 other people in the theater. You may get unlucky and have zero dubbed showings nearby or get lucky and have one nearby
Oh and as for the academy awards missing it? Dead simple: they pick what their grandkids like for winners.
The movie is actually a rarity for anime: the Japanese band went back and redid the audio recordings in English.
If you want adult anime, look at purchasing Hellsing Ultimate or similar.
If the movie is NOT showing in your area/country, expect a home release at the earliest next year (if no home release in japan, which still has it in theaters, no home release anywhere).
I was really annoyed as I only watch my anime dubbed and I was near close to walking out-oh well at least I will get the home release when it comes out.
Want to see it but will have to wait.
It is not showing locally for me so I have to wait for a digital or BluRay release.
I have been watching anime since the 80's, and have cried at how much harder it is to find legal releases since the Anime Bubble burst.
Pioneer, Geneon, ADV, etc.... I miss you all.

Anime Recommendations & Site to watch
I agree. I was happy to see a a number of good on-line sites that carry Anime such as Funimation and Crunchyroll.
If you like Romance shows, I recommend Toradora!
Flying Witch for a nice Slice of Life with a bit of supernatural.
For a good cry and watching a lovely story Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day
And finally Hourou Musuko Wandering Son. Nitori Shuichi is a boy who sees himself as a girl. He transfers to a new elementary school, and there, meets Takatsuki Yoshino, a tall and attractive young girl, who also dreams of being the opposite sex.

Is fearr Gaeilge briste, ná Béarla clíste.
Broken Irish is better than clever English.
This is one I will be watching for
Thanks for the posting.
It minded me of another long distance link between souls, the graphic story "Dreamless", by Bobby Crosby and Sarah Ellerton.
