Well. Over the weekend, I found that my cousin, who I take care of, had a sore on his toes.

He's had problems with this foot for as long as I've taken care of him, and he's lost 2 of the toes because of frostbite and diabetes.

Thankfully, he has no feeling in that foot, but it's a problem as well. He's developmentally disabled, and thinks, since his foot doesn't hurt, it's fine. He also has no comprehension of sweets being bad for him, and it's always been a problem keeping his glucose level down.

Well, things have come to a head, and monday morning, the last three toes will be amputated. Since I care for him, I keep thinking, is there anything I could have done differently, but I know there's not.

Still, it's hard not to be second guessing myself.

I second that

Especially with mentally disabled people.

A friend's greatest (controllable) health fear ...

A friends greatest (controllable) health fear is diabetes.

Argues with her doctor, has five (!) blood glucose meters, keeps claiming the doc's lab is incompetent or just plain wrong, her blood glucose numbers are all over the map ...

But pay attention to this page, and the books shown there, bother reading Barnard's book (he's done clinical research) which I sent her ... no way in aitch ee double hockey sticks ...

And you bet you life on your doctor 'getting it' ...

Sorry about your cousin's problems. Given those, sigh ... I think you have zero chance, other than preparing wholesome food for him. (Read books for guidance).

Me? A1C 5.7 (and I had to >ask<), my doc says running an A1C on me would be a waste, and my fasting glucose is always under 90 ... And I don't even try to control the "diabetes" that I >do not have< ...

And my friend thinks I'm the nut job...
