What A Worthwhile Idea

joannebarbarella's picture

It's been flying under the radar for four years. Somebody said recently that The Guardian had gone anti-trans. It seems not.

The Graun

It's gone ferociously anti trans, especially its associate the Observer, in the person of the odious Sonia Sodha. It's even been called out as institutionally transphobic by its American branch.

What does happen is that the occasional positive article leaks through. The paper normally makes up for the lapse pretty quickly.

There remain zero mainstream media in the UK that treat us fairly.

Guardian wars

I think Private Eye has been reporting on a kind of social media war going on between some of its columnists? The editor has been trying to cool it but it keeps flaring up. It is all too urban for me as a country mouse, but has to do with differing attitudes towards trans rights vs women's rights?

I suspect you are right

However, if both sides would drop the partisanship and really look at the issue, they are actually both on the same side and the danger comes from men.

Angharad

Been telling them that for ages

There are indeed issues within the Graun group, particularly between the USA and UK offices. Some of the older columnists have left, largely to join extremely right wing publications. Suzanne Moore is a really good example. Her Wiki page is hilarious, because she is described very clunkily as "the daughter of an American father and a working-class British mother". Get those brownie points in at the start! The cognitive dissonance of someone who writes for both the Daily Mail, famous for cheering on the British Union of Fascists, and 'Marxism Today' can only be imagined.

With the possible exception of Julie Bindel, who simply hates all men, especially gay men, plus bi people and straight women (like herself; she's a 'political lesbian'), the main driver of the hatred there comes from a group of women who are desperate to remain at the centre of attention. As they are all extremely affluent, they have nothing to risk.

This is being driven harder, and largely funded, by the far right and religious fundies/ Many of the leading 'lights' in UK transphobia straddle the line. Forstater, for example, who is utterly vile, works closely with neoNazi supporters like Harry "Fair Cop' Miller, an associate of the criminal fascist and racist Stephen 'Tommy Robinson' Yaxley-Lennon and the Nazi fellow-traveller Kellie-Jay 'Posie Parker' Keen-Minshul, aka Mosley Parker, Avon Braun, Nazi Barbie, etc. It's a toxic mix. Add to it the self-declared LGB Alliance, formed in 2019 and now claiming credit for a pension reform carried out in 2017.

The LGBA, a VERY close friend of the current 'equality' minister, was outed by a government watchdog, possibly deliberately, when they chose to address a reply not to the registered LGBA office but to their real office, at 55 Tufton Street, which is a hub for interlinked far-right lobbying groups of the really nasty sort.

All surveys of people in the UK show overwhelming support for trans people, the strongest being among cis lesbians. Incidentally, the LGBA itself admitted in court that actual lesbians make up only 7% of their members. People in the UK support us, but ALL of the media is unremittingly anti-trans. Transphobic items in the press here, as well as on TV and radio, are now averaging over 1,000 a month.

As for Private Eye, I stopped reading that years ago, as it has become really, REALLY transphobic. Rather like when I first started reading it, when it was openly very homophobic.

This is work I am very involved in, from awareness raising to personal support re mental health and work problems. And I am bloody tired.

Posie Parker

joannebarbarella's picture

Only narrowly avoided being expelled from Australia following a rally she held which was attended a Nazi group. She claimed the Nazis were nothing to do with her, but it was only her journey to New Zealand which prevented her from being declared persona non grata. In New Zealand she tried the same tactics with "far-right" groups but there was such an uproar that she left immediately after, declaring that New Zealand was the worst place she had ever been to.

If any of the British media support her then I can only conclude that they are Nazi sympathisers.

Posie Parker in Ireland

She tried to hold a rally in Ireland with fellow transphobe Graham Linehan, writer of Father Ted. Their rally attracted a counter rally of trans folk and allies - roughly 4 times as many. There are only a handful of hard right activists in Ireland and they seem to be heavily funded from the UK and USA. Using the same playbook - anti-trans and anti-asylum seekers - they burnt down a disused hotel two days ago that was earmarked for asylum seekers. Few in number but dangerous.

Not helped by our political "leaders"

Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman have waded in with the transphobia, and there is a lot of spiteful crap about Yasmin Finney in various Doctor Who Facebook groups. Why do some of these awful people seem to think that we must all be mentally ill, or paedophiles, and that they know more about us than we do - or at least that their opinion about us is more important than mere facts... /rant

This is how social media works

Angharad's picture

It is full of opinions and fake facts that mislead and misinform its users who seem to have some difficulty in separating truth from fact possibly helped by rich American 'Christians' who seem to fund this conspiracy stuff.
