Doubts 2

Becky continues her narrative of her life, constantly weighing the cost of being who she is.

I'm back in my office fighting tears. I want to know who the complainer is but know it's best I do not. If I knew I would run to her, tell her I too know fear, or at least I did. I was able to escape mine, suppressed it for decades while I receiving daily doses of testosterone against my will, becoming a man. Except I feel fear again now sometimes when I walk alone in the dark from Metro to my car. I no longer feel I could defend myself against an attack.

Doubts, A Narrative

Doubts

The following is not story. It is a narrative. It doesn’t start at the beginning, and it is not known where it will end. But it will; everything does. There will be several sequential posts as the author is motivated. Since it is a narrative there is no dialogue and it is always in the present tense. The intent is not to entertain but to inform and to incite understanding, context, perspective. Ideally a reader my gain an appreciation where we are today, and what it will take for a better tomorrow. Enjoy.

Choices Chapter 22

Choices Chapter 22

Author’s note: For various reasons this story was delayed. Now, God willing, it will continue, hopefully to an acceptable conclusion. Let’s just say Miriam needed a break from dealing with the agonizing issues of having a transgender child in 1956. Readers are encouraged to spend some time with previous chapters to better understand this one. Enjoy.

Choices - Chapter 20

(Don does a reverse & with Miri impulsively go shopping.)

Chapter 20

“What!” I practically yelled much too loudly and, after I realized how many heads turned, whispered. “You’re suggesting we go shopping for a dress for our son! Remember. You’re the one who wanted to lock the third floor door. You practically called Dr. Ellis incompetent because he complimented Jack’s hair. You thought I was bonkers for buying him panties. Now you’re all in. Typical!”

Don’t get me wrong.

Choices - Chapter 18

(Miriam renews her faith. Don and Miriam finally take Jack to see Dr. Ellis)

Choices
Chapter 18

How do you explain the adult world to a child, an eleven year old who just two Christmases before still hopefully clung to a belief in a white haired bearded jolly old man in a red suit bringing presents? How do you tell your child that the world he lives in is, at times, cruel and hateful, sinister and ignorant as well as unyielding in myths and dogma? How do you explain reality?

Choices - Chapter 12

(The delay of this next chapter of the ordeal Miriam Roberts was dealing with in a small town in West Virginia in the mid1950’s was due to an obsessive rewrite by the author, not to mention compulsive editing and tedious research. It must have been a critical time for Miriam to necessitate such a delay.)

Struggles - Chapter 13

(Private Richard Bromely hasn’t escaped the issue that has always tormented him as much as he thought. Still at DLIWC, the Army language school in Monterey, he looks forward to graduation, getting married and being away from all the demons. Dodging his problem is harder than he thought.)

Struggles - Chapter 12 (Part one of two)

Interlude: Rich Bromely, the young man from a small Pennsylvania town was abruptly introduced to the world, a man’s world, in 1966 when he lost his student classification that deferred him from the draft just as the Vietnamese War was heating up. Rich graduated from Johnstown High School, attended a small community college for two years and met a girl named Brandi. Rich and Brandi met through a mutual friend and attended separate schools, she in upstate New York. They only saw each other occasionally but they both felt the other was the one they wanted to be with for the rest of their lives. They became engaged shortly before Rich enlisted for four years in a special program, a program that would likely keep him out of Viet Nam.

Struggles - Chapter 10

(Note: The author humbly appreciates those who may be following the story of Rich Bromely and his struggles in the 1950’s and later. I am taking a brief hiatus of posting a chapter each day while traveling and intend to use the time to edit and proof the next few chapters. Thanks to all for the kudos. Posting the next chapter of Struggles should resume at the very end of May. Criticism and comments are welcomed.)

Chapter 10

Riding in Cars with Men

Rich couldn’t focus. Everything was spinning. The headlights of the oncoming cars were blurry streaks of light to him and he couldn’t tell where he was. He had no memory of what had happened to him. He knew he was riding in a car and that it was cold and dark. He felt nauseous. The intermittent lights from the passing streetlights showed wet spots on the front of his pants. He must have dozed off, or more accurately, passed out. He didn’t look over at the man driving and tried not to let him know he was awake.

The El Camino came to a stop and Rich realized he was a block from his house. The man reached under the seat and pulled out a handgun. He nudged Rich with the gun.

Choices - Chapter 7

(Note: The author humbly appreciates those who may be following the story of Miriam and how she deals with the issue her 10 year old son revealed to her in 1955. I am taking a brief hiatus of posting a chapter each day while traveling and intend to use the time to edit and proof the next few chapters. Thanks to all for the kudos. Posting the next chapter of Choices should resume at the very end of May. Criticism and comments are welcomed.)

Choices

Chapter 7

Little by little I pulled my head back out of the sand. I knew I had to. I needed a plan and actually prayed to God the Controller. It couldn’t hurt but I knew in my heart that it was me who had to discover the reason behind this; the reason why this was happening.
