Does kindle direct publishing....

Printer-friendly version

Does kindle direct publishing even take short stories? Seems to me the only thing they handle is books; there are no mentions of any short stories at all. It's maddening, seems like amazon didn't even read my story before they circular filed it.

And on that note, anyone have another suggestion for me? online publishers that aren't complete asshats?

How short is short

My story The Dress Punishment is on Amazon and is only 5500 words. I haven't heard of a minimum and am wondering how many words your story is.

short is non book.

kindle direct publishing is what they want me to use to submit anything; last I heard the shortest book was around 70k words. My short story weighs in at just over 15k words, or 40 pages as windows office formats it.

The problem isn't really whether you have a short story on kindle, but more how it got there. As far as I knew, there was only one route for short stories to get on kindle, and I took it. Wrong? possibly, but it would have been nice if I'd gotten some word that I was going about things the wrong way before I wasted 2 months.

I don't see why it's a problem

My recent "book" is only about 11k words, and it was approved for sale in less than 12 hours. You can find volumes ranging from as few as 17 "pages" on up on the Kindle store, so as far as I can tell there isn't actually a limit on how much or little content your book can have.
What format are you trying to publish it in? The Kindle Previewer will convert your story to the right format, and it needs to be right before they'll publish it.

That is so weird.

To me a book is a book, and a short story is a short story...but what the hell, if that's not true for kindle it might work out. as for the format, it's in about 4 different ones, including good old notepad. I don't see why they wouldn't take the standard windows office (odt i think it's called?) format though.

I just thought that amazon had rejected my story outright without reading it; perhaps I was wrong.

Amazon doesn't read anything. Who has the time? Kindle does have it's own formatting and maybe that's why it was rejected. You need a cover page and a copyright page, without those it would automatically get booted. they accept doc docx and html file formats.

Smashwords Style Guide

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

You might want to read Smashwords Style Guide by Mark Coker. It's free and available in what ever format you want (including Mobi for Kindle). It's also on Amazon, but only in their format (mobi what ever they call it.) Kindle and Smashwords want pretty much the same format; the difference being what they want on the title page and copyright page.

They don't want same format. Kindle requires a TOC smashwords doesnt . Smashwords is stricter in its formatting too.
