Suggestion
It might help if you gave a little information about the story. Basically, the type of story it is. You'll find there are types of stories people will or won't do. Take me, for instance. I really hate sissy stories so I wouldn't want to work on one, and I doubt the author would want or be happy with me.
If we were doing it for a living it might be different, but being free help allows people to pick and choose. All we get is a credit at the top of the story (sometimes not even that) and the satisfaction of helping a writer along.

I've done a fair amount of technical writing, but am working on my first real story too.
I have a fairly good eye for spelling, grammar, and homophone misspells. I'll offer gentle suggestions, but it's your story and your choice about how to tell it.
