Location, location...

Well, it WAS in England, but the games were actually paid for by the United Kingdom.

I have come to believe that our US forefathers still longed to be colonists. Our National Anthem "The Star Spangled Banner" was put to the tune of an old English song "The Anacreontic Song", which can get a bit bawdy. Our song "My Country Tis of Thee" is to the tune of "God save the Queen". So we Americans lack imagination and welcome just about anything British. Still the UK did an amazing job on the Olympics when they weren't laughing their collectives off at the silly Yanks using an archaic English song for their National Anthem.

... but I now regret we didn't bite the bullet and go down to Weymouth to watch the sailing. It's one of two sports I spent a lot of time participating in and if it wasn't for injury I'd still be racing. The only drawback was that the medal races were something of a lottery being held so close inshore with light shifty winds (except for the finals of the women's match racing on Saturday). BTW the other sport was motor cycle sporting trials - my cycling was originally a means of getting fit for sailing.

I thought the commercial side of the Olympics was awful (junk food) and the silly restrictions on using the word 'Olympic' but the sport itself was terrific. It made a change for 'my' sports actually to get some publicity. The future star for me was young Laura Trott - a double gold medallist at only 20 and a delightful youngster I first saw racing 4 years ago as Future Star at the Manchester velodrome.

Uuuuhm ...

Uuuuhm, I think that's 'thank you Britain'. Fortunately down here in Smokey Town (actually it's not that bad these days.) we were'nt affected at all by the football games in Cardiff.

I have to confess though, I did enjoy the cycling.

I didn't see much of the games. One, I don't like seeing professional athletes at the games.. that left out tennis and basketball and soccer. It seemed like everytime I tuned in it was to either water polo or ping pong. I have nothing against water polo, but ping pong... STILL.

I am still waiting for Olympic poker. Every country gets to play with their GNP. Sorry Costa Rica.

Now why I really hated the Olympics, and it had nothing to do with London. They are ruining my sport. International wrestling has gone through a metamorphosis and instead of turning a caterpillar into a butterfly, they turned a rose into a big hot steaming pile of cow dung. When I competed internationally (remember wrestling is trans friendly, where else can a guy walk around in a one piece swim suit and not be jeered) it was one five minute period. What's with this three period shit, and what's with you get points for winning a period not credit for overall points. So if you kick the shit out of your opponent the first period, you get 1 point. And don't get me started on the cinch rule. The cinch rule caused Alexander Kerelin another gold, and though I don't normally pull for a Russian, Rulon Gardner is a pug and didn't deserve to win.

I am sure no one knows what I am griping about. Just realize, like usual, I'm right and agree with me.

great event

For 16 days the world really did feel a better place and for a little while we really did feel like GREAT Britain. The nay sayers and the grumblers disappeared - and while I'm sure they will return like a bad penny - there was a wonderful positive vibe and confidence. I also think the world finally got a chance to see modern Britain not the pastiche of Empire and Royalty and Pomp that the tourist board pumps out. The enthusiasm and joy of the volunteers was amazing.

Add to that some wonderful athletes and events and it exceeded my expectations. London and the wider country really did do us proud. :-)

Yup really great

Jemima got it spot-on. I went up to London last Thursday just to soak up the atmosphere and it was amazing, everybody seemed happy just to be there, even the police, wherever they were from (had a nice chat with a policeman from Manchester and saw other areas represented too). It felt like a summer seaside holiday.

in 2007 when the TdF was starting from London. It was also apparently like that in parts of Weymouth where they were watching the sailing.

I saw them off from Greenwich, but the night before....there was a concert in Southwark Park, with Dave Edmunds, and Chas'n'Dave (ugh) as part of the celebrations. A large group of us, all cyclists, was there, and someone came up to ask if the concert was still going to go ahead wot wiv all vis cyculin' an's stuff.
