I tried what was reported to be the hottest hot sauce in the World. 'The Source' is rated at seven point one million scoville units. Considering Jalapeno peppers that are rated at three to five thousand units this was a milestone. The host stuck a metal wire in a one ounce bottle of hot sauce and then just touched my tongue. For the next half hour I was in agony. I have been pepper sprayed before, as part of work, (3 million scoville units) and didn't feel as bad. Water didn't help, milk didn't help and cold Heineken didn't help. No ice cream was available. I began to feel alive again in a half hour.
I couldn't appreciate the flavor of the sauce in its concentrated form.
It was fun trying the hot sauce, but I wouldn't in my life try it again.

... fortunately I was not the dummy as a coworker accepted a dare (not from me though) to CHEW AND swallow a fresh habanero pepper. For 5 dolllars ( well it was in 1998.) Dolt. I do not believe how he did that till this day.
I do believe BTW that a banana may help with spice burn.

Actually a jalapeno is 3000 to 5000 scoville units a habanero is about 200000 scoville units. Score very depending on where grown and variety I understand. I can eat just about any Jalapeno pepper some are very hot. I won't touch a habanero pepper usually. I just had to see what it was like though. Oh and one drop in a half gallon of chili isn't bad, I found out. The Source came from the depths of hell and a little goes a long way. This aint Tabasco sauce.

If you think habanero peppers do a job on your mouth, just wait 'til the next day.
Seems there's always some fool who wants to make a competition out of eating hot chiles. Not sure what the ability to chew on fire without showing any outward sign of discomfort actually proves, I'll leave that contest to the boys. Along with the hit-yerself-in-the-head-with-a-hammer contest (Well okay I did that one once, but that was the tequila...)
And yet habaneros do have a great flavor if you don't go overboard. Like maybe one, finely chopped, in a whole big pot of stew. With most chiles, when you slice one open you'll see a hollow area, and these two longitudinal fleshy strips jutting inward from the sides, often with a whitish edge. I'm not a botanists but I believe these are the chile's placenta. If you cut these out and throw them away (along with any seeds) you'll reduce the heat by about fifty percent. Sort of like cutting the "strychnine" fibers out of a peyote button...

I did the same dumb thing as you did and suspect getting your tongue pierced with a hot rusty needle is more pleasant than that sort of thing. I like to taste my food, I love spicy food but when it is so hot my mouth is in pain and my stomach says "What the hell do you expect me to do with this shit???" I believe I have crossed a line where I am no longer going to enjoy the meal.

Hey, don't look at me. I'm a total wimp with spicy foods. Just don't have the taste for it. Mild barbecue wings do me in. My diet probably tastes like Vulcan food to some of you.

water or other drinks never really help diminish the hottness/pain of hot sauce. You need to eat dry bread or dry pasta or something like that, it absorbs possible remains of the sauce in your mouth. At least that's what I found working. And it was recommended by my mexican cousin-in-law (does that word exist?).

Bread or crackers dry is the trick to eating the hot stuff. It absorbs the oil containing the hot stuff. Also, as counter intuitive as it seems water, milk etc, only makes it worse. I learned this the hard way. Once the Hot stuff is past the mouth, it's effect is lessened. It is the interaction with the moisture in your mouth with the taste buds and all, which allows you to experience the heat.
In the winter, I coat my bird seed with Chili pepper to discourage squirrels from eating all the seeds. I only do it the first few times I put seed out. After that the squirrels learn and will not attempt to raid the feeders. It has no effect on the birds as they have a hard bill. I feed the squirrels separately.

PS: A good hot, as in 5 alarm plus, Chili is one of the best ways to "flush" a cold from your system and clear your stuffed up sinuses etc. You can just use the hot sauce if you want.

I lost my taste-
-for such things watching a dare between two senior NCO's somewhere in Central America. They both were so red faced they could barely talk, but still denied it was hot. I think it Habanero peppers. Me, even mildly spicy stuff can tear me up requiring Imodium to fix things. Please, tasty, not HOT! :)

roasted habaneros are great with TexMex food and BBQ. Throw them on the grill while grilling, peel the blackened skin and eat.
