I watch a lot of movies, okay it's one thing I do to just relax.
But the thing here is, why, why do the women in those always keep their high heels on?
A real woman (and me when I was going through RLT) would get rid of them in a heartbeat if they had to move quickly, quietly, or were in the wilderness.
Sorry, was just watching a movie where both female leads kept wearing their heels in a damned jungle.
And I know, I know, it's sexy and all that. But come on here.

It's all there. It's almost like a super-power how they always find time to freshen their lipstick. The movies that don't do this really stand out. In fact, it's one way to say, I'm a serious movie maker doing something that matters: Have the female characters lose their high heels, chew off their lipstick and put their jewelry in a safe place when things get hairy.
Comic books do this too, to an even sillier extent. Lady Blackhawk not only flies combat aircraft in a mini-skirt and high heels, she fights that way, too. I don't know which is sillier. You didn't see Quillian running around in high heels in MY comic. Of course, she has hooves. :)

Heh. I've always loved the scene in the film 'The Holiday' where Cameron Diaz runs up a snow covered lane and then across a field in heels without stumbling once or getting her shoes dirty. A colleague and I had to do something similar once after a sudden snowfall happened while at work, and even walking using each other for support we kept sinking or slipping and I don't know about her but my heels were a mess. But then I guess it's one of those terribly sexist unrealities in the movies.
For me, my major annoyance is where an actress wakes up after a nights sleep clearly wearing make-up that hasn't smudged or faded in any way overnight.

Heels on soft ground
I wrote the scene in 'Cold Feet' where Arris tries to walk across a field in stiletto thigh boots from memories of watching girls doing the same thing at motorcycle rallies, and deliberately gave a nod to it in "Ride On". Annie, however, wants to wear the heels for her man, and to make herself feel better about her body, but has the brains to take a pair of flats to change into for crossing the lawn.
How many women do you see in the city each day, going to or from work in training shoes/flats and a business suit, heels in a bag? That's common sense and the real world, and real feet. Then again, my normal reaction to most films is to mutter "Why are you being so stupid?"

At one point, having established that she has no other kinds of shoes, he takes her pumps and whacks the heels off with a machete and hands them back to her. She looks at them wistfully, and says, “Those were Italian.†He responds with “Now, they're practical.â€

Tina Louise is 5'8"+, in heels close to 6' foot; even in flats, a smidge taller than Bob Denver. But they showed her height since it was a comedy. She did not always wear the heels though, sometimes they showed her in flat sandals. In scenes with just the Howells or just Mary Ann, there's no real reason to emphasize her height unless it's funnier that way. Having her look the Skipper right in the eye, though, is hilarious.
Alan Hale Jr was about 6'2". If you ever went to a parade in Southern California, you've probably seen the man, he loved to be parade marshall in his Skipper suit. :)

I think the reason that heels are worn by many women in the movies is because mostly the women are usually shorter than the men. Often much shorter. Be happy, it's an attempt to make women appear more nearly equal. Watch closely, even with the heels, the leading women are mostly still noticeably shorter than the leading men.

Being here in the company town area, I can tell you that mostly tricks and angles are used to make women look SHORTER than they are in movies. And men taller. There's a famous movie with two Swedish actresses and two Italian actors. The women were about 5'9", each, flat-footed. The men were about 5'8" each, in cowboy boots. You would never know that by watching the movie.
Standing sets in Hollywood are built with two sets of doors, a tall set of doors to make the women look short and a short set of doors to make the men look tall. It's less prevalent today but it is still done.

There's a cute skit in the 2nd season of Kids In The Hall (Canadian skit-comedy show from the 90's);
A couple is running from zombies. After a minute of running from zombies, the woman stops, pulls off her high heels, throws them at the (very slow moving) zombies, and her man takes her hand and they continue running away.
A minute later, she stops, takes off her high heels (?!), throws them, and continues running.
She stops and removes her shoes (always the same ones) about five times before the end of the skit :)

There is a scene where Mel Gibson has just met Sigourney Weaver. Mel's about 5'9" I believe, and Sigourney is 6'2'. She is in heels and I am reliably informed that they dug a trench for Ms. Weaver to walk in.
The same movie co-starred Helen Hunt, who is, of course, extremely short.
Years ago they had to pull out all the tricks for Alan Ladd. The main reason Veronica Lake partnered him in so many movies was that she was the only leading lady of the era who was short enough to wear heels without towering over him.

I spent 7 years in a theatre department. I've seen all sorts of things (and can't remember most, probably a good thing).
You want a real reason? Because _any_ shoe is better than _no_ shoe on a lot of different terrain, especially when your feet aren't used to bare ground. I used to be able to walk on gravel and hot concrete without a problem. Now? Not so much.
Frankly, if you're running full out, you can actually get some great motion out of toe-first running. It uses your entire foot and calf as a shock absorber and spring; many sprinters use this motion. Remember, a run is just a controlled fall. The further forward you can 'fall' without hitting the ground, the more efficient you're likely to be.
That being said, what's always made me cringe about footwear in movies is that people are 1) able to run on tile/polished stone in leather bottomed shoes WITHOUT sliding into, say, the elevators, or the bad guys; and 2) where are the 1 and 2 inch heels? Do they HAVE to be 3 inch or better?
I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

When you walk "properly" in high heels the bulk of your weight goes to the toes... Walking on soft terrain simply requires more weight on the toes. The higher the heel the more obvious this becomes.

Earlier this year, substituting at a school with an entire faculty and staff that was female save two (one third grade teacher and one of the gym teachers), daily there was maybe 5% to 15% that weren't in high heels.
Though, if I had, I would have been fired on the spot and sent home, as I was having to work as a guy.
This is a community that calls itself a "tourist" town, but it's a half a shade this side of farmers, really. And everywhere there are always VASTLY more women in heels than tennies or flats. Winter, Summer... doesn't matter. Go to the grocery store, or Wal-Mart, the only women not in heels are the ones working there, and usually that's due to what they're asked to wear as uniform.
I'm not saying it's right. I'm not saying it's comfortable or easy. But it is what is going on here.
If/when I look for a pair of heels, one of my criteria is that I can walk or even run in them comfortably. I currently have two pair of high-heeled footwear. One to look nice, are brown with about a 2½-inch heel and quite cute -- but I guarantee you I could sprint for 200 meters without twisting my ankle in them. They're exceedingly comfortable. I've fallen asleep wearing them before and didn't realize until the middle of the night when I kicked myself that I hadn't removed them. My other pair are a pair of boots with a 4-inch heel, originally chosen only for looks (the last pair of shoes I ever chose for just looks) but turned out to be not only comfortable and easy to walk in, but I use them as my snowboots. Yes, a pair of boots with a 4-inch, non-chunky heel.
I've known dozens of women who will wear nothing besides heels, whether it's practical or not. I'm not saying that every woman should or could wear nothing but heels, anymore than every man should. But what I am saying is that there are women who do just that, and wouldn't think anything out of the ordinary about it.

I've come to the conclusion that girls are wimps when it comes to heels.
I mean I wear six inches from 1900 (7pm) through to 0400 or 0600 (6am)in the morning when clubbing and that's dancing hard for up to 8 or nine of those hours. I'd have to break a bloody leg before I came off my heels, I mean how else can a girl look sexy!!!
Long live heels and all the girls who persevere with them. They're heroines every one. If I had to wear heels in the jungle the only allowance would be that they were boots to keep out unwanted visitors. They'd still be 6" wedgies.

Recently there was a proposal in the UK to introduce a law preventing employers from requiring female staff to wear high heels as part of any dress or uniform code. The idea was, of course, based on health and safety considerations. It made perfect sense, but there were a number of articles complaining that The Man was trying to 'ban heels'.
