According to the Talmud...

...the Egyptians were the laid-back Californians of their times, and probably would have spent all their time surfing if the Mediterranean had better waves. It's probably just what it looked like.

A. Aharei Mot 9:8 - "'You should not follow the acts of Egypt or the acts of the land of Canaan (Lev. 18:3)' - Is it conceivable that the Israelites should not build buildings or plant plantings as the Egyptians and Canaanites do? The Torah states: 'You should not follow their practices' - implying 'I, God, have declared prohibited only the practices which they and their ancestors established.' And what did they do? A man would marry a man and a woman would marry a woman, a man would marry a woman and her daughter, and a woman would be married to two men. Regarding these it is said: 'You shall not follow their practices.'"

B. Hilchot Issurei Bi'ah 21:8 - "For women to play around with one another is forbidden and belongs to 'the practices of the Egyptians' concerning which we have been warned, 'You shall not copy the practices of the land of Egypt'... But though such conduct is forbidden, it is not punishable by lashing since there is no specific prohibition against it and in any case no sexual intercourse takes place at all. Consequently, such women are not forbidden to the priesthood on account of unchastity, nor is a woman prohibited to her husband because of it, since this does not constitute unchastity. But it is appropriate to flog such women since they have done a forbidden thing. A man should be particularly strict with his wife in this matter, and should prevent women known to indulge in such practices from visiting her, and her from going to visit them."

The ancient Jews, of course, were not amused. Israel in those days was something like Texas, smack dab in the middle of the ancient Bible Belt.

Oh, wow.

I've ALWAYS honestly wondered if the concept of being "transgendered" was something that had evolved in more recent human history, or if people like us have always existed (admittedly, my knowledge of history is limited to what Arkansas schools were willing to teach, so... Yeah :-)).

This is so cool! ^_^

boys and girls were treated the same until puberty, in fact the word girl, just meant a child. So it might be all children were treated as girls until they became adolescent. Dunno how much we know about ancient Egyptian family life.

Question Is...

...would they really have provided breast plates in that case? Seems to me that those who mummified and buried him intended to fool/confuse someone, human or divine.

Reminded me, though the facts here are different, of the stories of male children in old China being dressed by their parents as girls during epidemics in hopes of confusing the evil spirits who might be looking for them. (That's from my ninth-grade world history text; I wondered later, since the Chinese famously valued males over females, whether they were just telling the spirits to go after someone more important.) Wouldn't make much sense to keep up the charade if they died anyway, though.

(Then there were the older kids from the Russian empire who were crossdressed to prevent the Tsar's soldiers from impressing them into lifetime military service -- but if this guy's only five years old that seems unlikely as an analogy, and again pointless after his death.)

Nothing Strange Here

The boy wanted to become a mummy . . . and he became one.

Like we haven't heard THAT one before. I appreciate the TG twist though, even when used in an un-PC way.

Those whacky Egyptians

So they probably stumbled on the first case of forced femme/BDSM asphyxiation play gone bad, the Pyramid Precinct Police being very PC about it and were using all the correct pronouns and gave the poor unfortunate girl a proper burial.
(after all this was pre-christian church lady era so I'm sure there was no trans-bashing back then)
I'm sure it is all explained in the nearby hieroglyphics. It was probably all over the Stone Press at the time as well.
