Next year I hope to do the C2C bike ride with my son and a few other idiots. Has anyone ridden on this route and if so, is it as bad as it looks?

Whitehaven to Sunderland? Be aware it is a sustrans route and therefore some of the surfaces are....
You have a monster couple of climbs,which come either side of the Alston area. What bike do you have?

We hope to do the Whitehaven Sunderland route.
My bike is a Raleigh Pioneer Metro LX 18" Mens Hybrid bike that has 21 speed Shimano gears and according to the shpeal it's ideal for use on and off road riding, with aluminium V-brakes, EZ Fire trigger shifters and front and rear mudguards.

It getts a bit rough ...
... in the Lakes area. We used to spend Christmases cycling and walking in the Lake district and rode odd bits of the route. It's not too bad as we even rode some of it on racing type trikes. Before the introduction of mountain bikes, cyclists used to ride rough tracks on perfectly standard drop handlebar touring bikes, as did I. The Rough Stuff Fellowship is an old established club dedicated to that.
You'll have no problems at all though you may have to walk sections that may be ridable on a more all-out of-road machine. What time of year are you intending to do the ride?
Just had a quick look at your link and it reminded me of a happy few hours one Christmas drinking real ale in Mungrisedale as rain pelted down outside and we'd chickened out of our intended ride. Fortunately the rain had eased by the time we set off back to Keswick :)

Never despise people who walk hills--it's stillhuman pwer even if it is the 24" gear, I know the Pioneer, and it shouldcope well with most of that route. Take some basic tools including a spoke key. B and B or camping? And how are you carrying your luggage?
Climbing bike
For the last decade or so, I've had my back-up road bike set up to climb the small but steep mountains around Phoenix AZ. I'm 61; I can keep up with a medium speed group on the flats by drafting, going maybe 24 mph with no wind with me near my fittest. I haven't been able to lose weight (at all almost) enough to compensate from my aging loss of strength; ie. my strength to weight ratio is bad. My present climbing bike is a '99 Cannondale CAAD 4, Al road bike, 58 cm. I have a triple crankset on it with a smallest chainring of 26 teeth. On the back I have an XTR rear derailuer and an XT (Shimano) 11-34, 9 speed cassette. The low gear ratio is 20.1 gear inches (700c x 23 tires). On the biggest near by mountain (it only climbs about 1400 feet), on the steepest section, I end up riding about 4 mph. By the time I get down from the top, everyone else in the club has left the park!
