As a male, I must plead ignorance about a woman. I am writing a story where a boy becomes a genetic girl. As a part of her rite of passage into womanhood, she has her first menses and must experience the use of tampons and pads. I pray that I get it right, because I do not wish to in any way insult my friends here.
I think you can do some very basic research about the subjects on the net, and get some accurate information. If I were in your position, I certainly wouldn't try to guess how things work. That's the weakness of several authors on sites similar to this. They just don't understand basic biology and the sex they are not part of.
I might be male-to-female, but wouldn't dare try to get it right without assistance from someone who has experience in the subject. I wrote something similar in one of my stories and got a lot of information from someone who did suffer from "the curse". I've no idea how embarrasing it was for them, but I have and always will be very grateful for the frankness we had in that conversation.
I remember a dear friend who told me and another mutual friend about her daughter when she had her first period. The daughter was age 12 and was crying and actually screamed at her Mother "make it stop". Mom said she told her daughter she would in about 30-40 years. That little biological issue can be very tramatic to most girls and even tho most get to the point of accepting it as part of being a female, you never truly get used to it. Tampons vs pads is pretty much an individual decision of each girl or woman and lots of times, girls will follow the lead of their mothers or older sisters, if they have any. One firm rule drilled into my sister's and my head by our Mom was NO white jeans, pants to be worn when near our "time". Jan

The three genetic girls I know best did NOT use tampons the first time - or second, etc...
I agree with Karen, get someone that has experienced what you want to describe to help or at least "correct" your story in that area.
Another point - all three ofthe above girls - have had VERY different experiences and use DIFFERENT pads & used different tampons.
