How many relationships last that long? How many friendships can stay that strong?
How much love can be told in a wag and a sigh? Seventeen years is too soon to say goodbye.

They even hold races for them in Washington County
A childhood friend had a dachshund. A nicer dog I never knew.
Well maybe this Boston Terrier in the late 60s or Sandy an aged, arthritic collie that tolerated us clumsy pre-kindergarteners way back in my day. We're talking EARLY, John F Kennedy as President, 1960s here.
We lost two cats this year. One to old age, he was a day short of 20. Another to a virulent tumor.
I know your pain.

My Dog
When my childhood dog died---he was 15 years old---I was heartbroken. We were together from the age of 6 for me until I was a sophomore in college. It took us a long time to recover. So I'm very sorry for your loss :(
thank you for your kind words
my wife rescues dogs for local folks going into the retirement center. We currently have six dogs, she finds homes for most of them but buddy boy was my special pal. I'll miss him for the rest of my life but Ill get better at dealing with his loss. But right now it doesn't feel like I ever will.
Maybe buddy and harley have a critter treed. buddy sure liked that. thanks for the nice sentiments
