Pappy's Here

oOo

Pappy's here, bud, Pappy's here.
You ain't got nothin' ta fear,
Cause Pappy's here. Pappy's here.

I got your ol' baseball glove.
An' I swear to Lord Above
That 'Catch and throw' showed my love.

Never been the world' best Dad...
How'd you get so very sad?
(Please come back, I'll not be mad.)

Just waitin' fer senior year.
Graduation? I'd yell an' cheer
Then at home we'd raise a beer...

oOo

Pappy's here, bud, Pappy's here.
Don't matter what words you'd fear.
Cause Pappy's here. Pappy's here.

Fed you milk, changed your nappy.
Early on, not too crappy,
Workin' hard, you were happy.

Fridge pictures, drawn from the heart
How did he get good at art?
Always knew my kid was smart

No friend at school? That were fine.
I'm there for you, son of mine,
Till horrid words crossed the line.

oOo

Pappy's here, bud, Pappy's here.
Don't listen if boys do jeer.
Cause Pappy's here. Pappy's here.

You wanna have the blouse not shirt?
Didn' think it'd really hurt.
Don't the Scotmen wear a skirt?

Makeup things? I don't know how.
Screaming girl? "She just a sow."
Angry boys? "You tell me now."

Didn't know I became a crutch.
Didn't see it continue such...
Didn't feel it become too much.

oOo

Pappy's here, bud, Pappy's here.
You want help, I'll lend an ear,
Cause Pappy's here. Pappy's here.

Trouble happened 'bout your grave.
You chose a name so I'd waive
To set in stone what I gave.

The preacher said I oughta
Deny you were my daughter.
Treat you like blood was water.

Punched him in his fuckin' teeth.
Didn't give me any relief.
Was let off though. Due to 'grief'

oOo

Pappy's here, bud, Pappy's here.
Know yer loved, know that yer dear.
Cause Pappy's here. Pappy's here.

Yer buried now, outta state.
Pappy's kept you from that hate
(Don't you worry 'bout the rate,)

A little work, but I'll confess:
Got hold of an old prom dress
Prettiest thing you'd possess.

Paid two wonderful lasses.
Fixed your face without clashes:
Makeup, colour, and lashes.

oOo

Pappy's here, bud, Pappy's here.
(My arm to have been a seer)
Pappy's here, bud, Pappy's here.

Midnight hour, a buzzin' tone.
Texts for you on that locked phone.
Unanswered words, I'm alone.

I got back the self-same gun.
Like a prize, what'd I won?
An empty space. Less my son.

Sixteen's long if life is rough
Yer old man thought he were tough.
But forty is quite enough.

oOo

Pappy's here, luv, Pappy's here.
No worryin' 'bout straight or queer
Cause Pappy's here. Pappy's here.

Always ahead, like you as a kid and funnin'.
But Heaven or Hell, whatever's in the runnin',
Just bide a while, girl... 'cause yer Pappy is comin'.

oOo

Not spoiling the twist early! Nice!

Good job, "bud"! :)

The lines being written further and further in time, starting from the beginning, instead of all at once, from the end! And works well with the end!

Moving through time, and moves me with it!

Thank you.

Thank you.

While writing it I almost added more details, a verse or two about what was going on, but then I thought about it. What came up was that the narrator wouldn't know the full details of what was going on, part of why it took him by surprise.

As for the end... Well, the very end is something that I found myself compeled to add as it just seemed a little too sad otherwise.
