Some of you will find this silly. That's okay, I'm not always a grownup. I think many will understand.

A friend of ours found a female cat that had very young kittens. Unfortunately the Mother cat soon died, and many people believed the kittens couldn't be saved, especially a tiny little black female, the runt of the litter. We decided to call her Shadow. We are celebrating her eighth week with us. She's still very tiny, but extremely spoiled. I foresee trouble ahead, but we love her.

On the other side of the coin, our oldest male is dying. It will happen any minute now, and my heart is breaking. My wife just keeps holding him, and crying. Yeah, he's "just" a cat, but he's spent 16 years with the family. My step-son got him when he was two. We'll be fine, it's just so sad.

Y'kow, life is so hard sometimes.

Know The Feeling

Enemyoffun's picture

I had a dog that my family got when I was five, he lived for 15 years. The summer after my first year of college was when he finally died, it broke my heart. I didn't get another dog for nearly four years. Its hard so I know how you're feeling right now :(

THANKS!

I appreciate that!

Having pets is hard

I've outlived several cats and dogs who have either died from things like cancer or old age. I had one cat that was with me for 17 years and she was dying from kidney failure. I still look back on the day I had to put her down and cry.

I know that as humans, we are going to outlive our pets. Knowing it is one thing, but when it happens, it really really hurts.

I know how you feel Wren. My heart is with you.

I've mourned the passing of many pets over my 68 years.

It's tough, but new pets can help you through it.

Now though, I am worried that my two cats are going to outlive me, and there will be nobody to care for them after I'm gone.
Within the last year, I had to put an 18 year old cat to sleep because of kidney failure. He was one of the two best of the 23 cats that have owned me.

That left me with just one cat, and I said, no more.

But then a friend needed a home for an older, (Maybe 10 year old), cat and I took her in.

So I know what you are going through with your older cat, Wren.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

It's just a...

I used have Parakeets and I got attached to them, when one of them died I was heart broken. I heard the its just a bird. Mookie my parakeet wasn't just a bird, she was fun to have around, I got her when I got divorced and she was with me five years. When I hear people say it was just a... I want to say if you lostyou child would you be upset? Its just a child.
Our pts often become our children, we feed them, make sure they stay healthy and they become part of the family.
I now have a cat. I've had her for four years. If anything happens to my cat I'll be devastated for a while.
I had a black kitten before I got Frisky, I called ehr Shadow becasue she was always between my feet. She died in a home accident and I bawled for days. I had her only eight weeks and she wa the first cat I had ever had as a pet.
I know where you are and I feel saddened that you are going to lose a pet. Perhaps shadow came at the right time, as you lose your pet a new one is beginning to wedge her way into your heart.

The line -It is just a .... Indicates whoever is talking, totally underestimate just how complected our bond with the world around us is. The connections between people and there furry friends reach into the soul level, and that, all of creation is interconnected physically no different than our hand or leg. It is just your foot, rings a little differently than fill in the name of your pet. I have been deeply enriched by my relationships with my five cats, and wordlessly they have instructed me in the most important parts of my life. That is no small matter.

My dog wants me to be happy, safe and healthy and I want the same for her. When I'm unhappy, worried or sick, she often feels the same. Just looking at her calms me and petting her or feeding or taking care of her fills some deep need that makes me feel good.

Pets help people live longer. They love us without conditions and it is impossible not to love them back.

My brother's two dogs are having health problems and it is tough.

Love your cats while you have them and the memory of their love will be with you forever.

Hugs,
Erin

I wouldn't be without

my co-conspirators, I mean authors. I've had several cats and loved each one as I hoped they did me. It's awful to lose anyone you love, but it's also important to remember that each has probably lived a happier life with you than they might have with others.

The British are renowned for their sentimentality over their animals, even being accused of loving their animals more than their children. It isn't true of course we love both.

I hope your new arrival can help to lessen the pain of losing your older 'baby', it's always dreadful.

Don't give up!

And don't give in to offers of putting cat to sleep... Our cat lived 3+ years after veterinarian said she had couple of days of agony to live through. And it was very sad when she died after almost 19 years in the family.
My big tragedy now is that now I'm allergic to cats and dogs... Not too bad, but I can't have a cat living with me...

Thanks Racer

Unfortunately he passed early this morning. We've begun the recovery, but he's been a part of our family for so long, he is really missed.

Wren

Oh Wren...

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've known that pain all to well. The last kitty I lost was 16, and the one before that was 20. My house was petless once for about 6 months, boy that was a rough time for me. Now I have 5 kitty's ranging from 5-11years old and love them all dearly. The best way to lessen the pain is to open your heart to the next 1 or 2.... (Hugs) Taarpa
