After reading Angie's last chapter about Jacquie's obscene maltreatment in care I feel this website might make interesting reading for any who think it's unrealistic and that this level of abuse is improbable..
Believe me, this is exactly the sort of stuff that went on in my time and is still going on today!!!

Not just those in care...
There have been several cases over the past decade of children who were suffering horrendous abuse at home but went undetected by all the various agencies involved (social care, health, schools, police...). Unfortunately, these cases only tend to come to light when the child dies and a Serious Case Review is undertaken.

You're confusing two things...
...which leads you to your concern about child abuse victims becoming offenders. All victims of sexual abuse as children suffer; many into their teens and beyond because of the impact of someone else' choice, though a significant percentage of them may present as asymptomatic. But only only 1% of the population offends. That figure may be high in that it doesn't take into account the very high rate of recidivism while as much as 16% of the population in this country can be identified as victims, and that's conservative for this reason:
Although child sexual abuse is reported almost 90,000 times a year, the numbers of unreported abuse is far greater because the children are afraid to tell anyone what has happened, and the legal procedure for validating an episode is difficult (American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, 2004). (emphasis mine)
In addition, most children know their abuser; a family friend or worse yet, a family member.
Most children are abused by someone they know and trust, although boys are more likely than girls to be abused outside of the family. A study in three states found 96% of reported rape survivors under age 12 knew the attacker. Four percent of the offenders were strangers, 20 percent were fathers, 16 percent were relatives and 50% were acquaintances or friends (Advocates for Youth, 1995). So 66% of all children who were victimized were hurt by someone the know.
In other words, the kids are mostly hurt by someone they know, but almost all of them are either incapable or unwilling to hurt someone else in the same manner. Does this mean we don't pay attention? No, but keep in mind that the majority of sexual offenders, both men and women, never got help for their hurt, while kids who report being hurt are highly likely to receive and benefit from help.

Bev is so right,
But the most caring people I have ever met were the people who had been in care
and had been abused in some form or another so they knew what the situation was
and helped others,they did not mistreat them.A big difference when you have been
there and done it,a prime example is our Beverly,a kind and caring person who,
like myself,can't forgive and can't forget and I just wish that some people would
think before commenting on things of which they have no knowledge.

my rapist was a doctor who was supposed to HELP kids deal with terrible issues, and instead he used us for his own purposes. I've never even been tempted to hurt anyone like I was hurt, but my brother decided not to have kids to prevent any temptation that way.

What's wrong with politicians and administrators...in the UK, America, Australia and elsewhere...that they cannot get their acts together on this?
Everywhere we have priests, supposed carers and psychopathic personalities abusing children almost with impunity....and nobody wants to do anything to change the systems that allow it.
Surely there must be personality analyses that would weed out many of the perpetrators...perhaps not all...but enough that there are a majority of decent people running the systems, so that whistles get blown when mistreatment occurs.
But it seems we...That's US... don't care enough to make fundamental changes,

Why is it so difficult to believe the whistle-blowers?
Then I thought about who are the perpetrators. They are the ultimate consummate liars and con-men. They are ostensibly devout church-goers, pillars of religion, doctors and teachers, smiling uncles, all of whom dispense platitudes and words of advice and"wisdom".
People say "How can you possibly think he is capable of such monstrosities? He is always so nice; never has a bad word to say about anybody. He encourages everyone."
But underneath he is like a snake waiting for a mouse to devour, and the whistle-blower has to overcome this false image, even when the evidence is overwhelming. There are always those who just refuse to accept the truth.
That is why it is so hard to stand up and be counted.
