Have you read about the new hydraulic bikes? You pedal them and a liquid transmission sends the power to the wheels -- they're going to market them under the name The Viscous Cycle.

Spoke-n like a true cat lover. Oil be seeing you, but it's probably a frame-up anyway.

You no doubt realise what you've done now, Erin; you've unleashed the BCTS pun machine.

I Took You Seriously

Cuz that's how I am. After reading the other comments, I guess you might not be serious. If you are serious about those subjects, then I'd discuss them with you cuz I'm into biking.

Hydraulic brakes do work very well. I'm planning to put hub mounted disc brakes with mechanical (cable) actuation on my tandem, since the present vee brakes are under powered for stopping a heavy steel tandem plus two fairly big adults, but I haven't done it yet.

I got my brother for a ten-count. :) And he's known me for 55 years come this Friday.

Tandem brakes

We have a Magura hydraulic calliper brake on the front and a cable operated disc at the back which stops us very effectively on our Cannondale tandem. I would recommend keeping a V brake on the back controlled with a ratchet lever as ostensibly an 'emergency' extra but in reality a brilliant parking brake. Just remember to release it before setting off because it makes climbing very hard work if you don't - believe me!

Mind you we travelled many 1000s of miles on our previous tandem with just ordinary cantilever brakes and relied on planning ahead. There were some descents in Yorkshire where we couldn't actually come to a complete stop but we coped :) We even took it to the USA about 15 years ago.

I guess the manufacturers of Erin's bikes are likely to be on a sticky wicket.

I wonder...

If I were to get us going fast enough downhill, would those brakes let me pull a headstand on a tandem?

Now you've done it.
