I just saw this on FM, and felt it should be passed along. Anne McCaffrey, author of the Dragonriders of Pern novels, as well as many, many more, has gone between. She passed away at her home, Dragonhold, in County Wicklow, Ireland, on November 21st, after suffering a stroke. That's pretty much all I can say right now, I'm having trouble seeing through the tears.

R.I.P.

Ra"ll hira :(

I think someone mentioned

this earlier and I've been fighting my own tears all week. I never met her, but she was a dear friend all the same because of the wonderful characters and world she created. My own fascination with Dragons began by reading the White Dragon and then diving into the first three books. I had to do my usual way, backwards of course! I got into Dune the same way, but that is another story.

My current copies are beginning to show their wear much like others of my comfort books. When I'm feeling down, soaring with the Dragons of Pern always helps. :) If anyone is responsible for my own dragon stories it's her. The wise, sometimes confusing critters that aren't human, but perhaps that makes their humanity all that more precious.

Fair winds.
hugs
Grover who is leaking tears yet again.

a loss to all

she wrote some great books.
I think she was in her 80's but still its a loss to all of us.
I haven't read her last book that she co-wrote with her son but is in the pile.
she was a great Lady.

And Menolly sings the lament

I was introduced to Pern in 1974 by some friends of her son Alec. They had a couple of trucks, one of which was called the "Green Dragon." Alec, at the time, was involved with the 100 Flowers Co-operative Bookstore in Cambridge. My friends and I were in the "management collective" of the Rising Earth Food Co-op - so many late nights drinking espresso and smoking Sherman's trying to reach consensus. Ah to be young, committed and invincible.

McCaffrey books remain on my shelves (and some in boxes and some on my Nook) and are still revisited on occasion. My beat up copies of Dragonflight and Dragonquest are the ones I bought back in Cambridge.

My favorite Pern books are the Dragonsinger series although the The White Dragon is a close second. I remember so identifying with and wanting to be Menolly. It was a long time before I reconciled with the "why" behind that want.

If I still drank, I'd raise a glass to her memory. Thank you Anne.

pity

I loved the pern novels...all of them there is quite a few, Bought the game.

Have here rowan series including the prequeals, killasandra series, ship who sung series, uh the living world one forget name, acornia series, and many others mostly ebook format. I even liked the ones she editted such as lightwing for tara k harper, and kate n shadow. the co wrote ones with mercadys lackey ( she has another ton of books ) and elisabeth moon.

Her imagination spans alot of books, some you have to read the footnotes of the author whos name is on the book to even find out she hand a good hand in.

Lightwing is one I found out by accident as i wrote the author.

I will raise a glass to her.

And wish her spirit well wherever it has gone.

I also recall her ship stories very well. An all around great writer and talent. She will be missed.

PERN

this is my favourite place to escape to. I have read all the books I could find about PERN.

if I were granted a wish I would be transported to live in that world.

I spent a great deal of my college life 'gaming' in that setting.

The tears I feel today I'll

The tears I feel today
I'll wait to shed tomorrow.

Though I'll not sleep this might Nor find
surcease from sorrow.

My eyes must keep their sight:
I dare not be tear-blinded.

I must be free to talk
Not choked with grief, clear-minded.
My mouth cannot betray The
anguish that I know.

Yes, I'll keep my tears till later: But my
grief will never go.

Menolly's "Song for Petiron"

This song is from Dragon Singer. Enough said.

Do PERN proud Todd. And Anne, Rest in Peace.

Such good memories...

Ms McCaffrey's passing is a sorrow, but I've once again read The Ship Who Sang... happy tears.

Some Good New Re: Anne McCaffrey

According to Amazon, there is at least one additional PERN book that is a collaborations with her son Todd, still unpublished.

Sky Dragons is due on May 29, 2012 (audio), & Jun 26, 2012 (Hardbound & Kindle)

I'm a bit disappointed with the latest book 'Dragons Time', I guess in part, because it doesn't stand alone. One needs to read or re-read Dragon Girl right before reading it to have a program to tell the players.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
