I stumbled across this very interesting CBC podcast (MP3) this morning. Maybe some others might be interested too.
The 'sponsorship announcement' is even worse than PBS's are, but I can't imagine this story on All Things Considered or This American Life, can you?

A Challenge.
Hey Jan,
Thanks. Here I was thinking I was pretty open-minded and all and then WHAM, you post this and I end up rethinking how much of a bigot I am. So now that I have crossed this border and say; "They love each other and feel they should live as men, get married and have a baby, more power to them. All my blessings and well wishes go out to the three of them." What is the next unknown bigotry that you will ferret out of me, HUH?

A lot of that Q-word too.
They use the word queer about themselves. Only a few years ago just hearing that word would give me screaming nausea and retching hissy fits. Now, I think it is a great word for many great people.
Hey, if I (and you) can learn to tolerate things, perhaps there is hope for others.

When I think of what the word REALLY means, I come up with "out of the ordinary" or "different" or maybe even "unusual". If one looks at the ratio of the gender/sexuality-variable, I mean gender mixed and the same-sex oriented types, to the general population, then I MUST admit the word "queer" CERTAINLY applies.
Many of the names of various minorities, names that have been applied by 'main-stream', majority populations in derision, have been picked up by those minorities and have become, not only accepted, but banners, badges of honour, for the minorities in question. Christian, gay, lesbian, even my original religious sect Mennonite were all names used derisively to scorn early adherents to these groups. Maybe we need to be PROUD to be "queers" as a group. Ok I'm not quite ready to apply that label to myself, even though I realize by my own definition, I am queer.
Just some thoughts.
