. . .that the US side and England will meet in the final game?

Final

I think the reference is to the FIFA World Cup Football Final.

Presently they're down to the last 16 nations in the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

In the next round we have:

  • Uruguay v South Korea
  • USA v Ghana
  • Germany v England
  • Argentina v Mexico
  • Netherlands v Slovakia
  • Paraguay v Japan
  • Brazil v Chile
  • Spain v Portugal

If it did happen that England was to meet the USA in the final, the English will be hoping that their goalkeeper plays better than the last time these two teams met in Group C.

World Cup quote

I heard a brilliant quote about the 2010 FIFA World Football Cup on the radio yesterday:

This World Cup is like the Second World War:

  • the French surrender early;
  • the Italians are no good;
  • the US finally start arriving late; and
  • England has to deal with the Germans.

To which we could have added: and the ANZACs were there too!

Interesting

Six Spanish-speaking nations, three English and two Portuguese. And of these matches, only USA-Ghana is between co-lingual countries. Odd. Is such a mix usual at this stage of the World Cup?

Hugs,
Erin

Interesting Thought...

...but the US would somehow have to get past Brazil in the Semi's. While an England vs USA rematch would be cool, what I'd love to see (while possible, but even longer odds), would be US vs Mexico. If you want the TV rating to go through the roof in the west, that would be the game. Talk about the ultimate bragging rights in the CONCACAF Region, those two teams go tooth and nail every time they face each other. Heck I'd even be happy seeing them go at it in the 3rd place game.

Unless they muck it up the US has a good chance of making it to the semi's but I don't see anyone taking out Brazil. On the other side of the brackets it's a crap shoot. I wouldn't bet money on Mexico getting past Argentina. Germany vs England is a coin toss, but the winner would probably still have to face Argentina (who's on fire).

Looking at the brackets right now, if I had to pick, I'd say Brazil vs Argentina in the final with a good chance for the US to be facing Spain in the 3rd place match.

Honestly

as long as the USA does not win I'll be happy. John Stewart on the Daily Show had a though that was scary possible. If the won the Americans would demand that the rest of the world call the game soccer. The thing is with freedom fries and freedom toast it's not that far fetched.

Re: umm, question?

What are freedm fries and freedom toast?

French fries (chips in the UK!) and French toast! I've never heard them called 'freedom' before, though.

Regards,

Dave.

What are the odds?

In a word: Zero!

The Ghana team has just knocked the USA out of the tournament, winning 2-1 in extra time, and setting up Uruguay v Ghana as the first quarter-final.

Earlier, Uruguay beat South Korea by the same score.

1400UTC Sunday

shiraz's picture

So,

the only game that matters right now is at 1400UTC, or 3pm in the UK.

Whatever the result, another European team progresses to the Quarter Finals. Of course, that team will speak English, the Germans speak it fluently.

That aside, if England have a convincing lead by half-time they'll throw it all away. Past form tells us that. Methinks Lady Luck will play a part in this game. I'll be on the road at 3pm, the roads (esp the M25 will be quiet!

Germany 4, England 1

Today is not a good day to be a fan of the England football team...

Oh well, now to see if by tomorrow the shops have removed all their St. George's flag bunting etc., and I'd imagine any remaining England-branded stuff will be heavily discounted...

Now, anyone willing to place bets on how long it will take Andy Murray to get knocked out of The Championships, Wimbledon? :)
