fire season has started again, and it doesn't look good. Today the smoke was so thick you could hardly see, much less breathe. And thousands have already had to evacuate small towns and reserves. nothing to do except pray, I guess ...

SCARY!!!

SCARY!!!

One thing I am glad to no have experienced is wildfires like you folks have. I can deal with a conflagration that destroy large chunks of cities, but not wildfires. At least with the conflagration there's a way to stop it. There's no true way of stopping those wildfires They are a rare force that creates their own winds and heat perpetuating their growth!

I just hope that you and your loved ones can get out of the smoke and hope the government has a way to contain it before it hits major population centers.

One of the biggest problems

One of the biggest problems with grass fires is that even if you get the top of the fire put out, it can be crawling underneath the old matted grass (thatching), and exploded back into burning again. The thatching keeps water from getting down to the soil.

They're not fun to put out, even on a small scale. You end up beating them to death. I've had to help with at least three near my house growing up.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

We have been lucky thus far

We have been lucky thus far this year. The firefighters around Boston loathe grass fires for that reason- it takes hours to contain them and get those stubborn patches, even if it's just in a small area. Plus add in tough access, low water pressure, extremely long water supply lines and it's a big headache.

The irony? They occur in tidal marshes- a lot of water around, but no way to get a fire engine to the water! Even the small fireboats have issues.

I feel your pain

In California we're no stranger to wildfires. Last year the Camp Fire near Paradise burned almost 240 sq. miles, destroyed 18,804 structures, and killed at least 85 people. People think of earthquakes for California, but wildfires are a greater, and more frequent, problem. Our friends in Australia also understand the problem.
