If you click on 2024-01 January - New Year's Resolution Story Contest above, you will see a list of the entries.

Contest Closed for entries.

Please post your choices for top three stories and possibly win $50.

Start the New Year right by participating in Jill, Emma, and Joanne’s writing contest!

BC Staff have been up to their eyeballs keeping the trains running and publishing new eBooks for our community, so Angela (Jill) Rasch and Emma Anne Tate offered to run a little writing contest to kick off the new year, get people’s creative juices flowing, and hopefully bring some new authors and readers as well! Joanne Barberella has pitched in gleefully to supplement the prize amounts. Another author who wishes to remain anonymous has also added to the total prize pool.

Here’s how it will work:

First Prize $300. . .Increased to $500 if choice is unanimous!
Second Prize $200
Third Prize $100

Contest opened on Monday, January 1, 2024 and all story submissions must be posted by Tuesday, February 14, 2024 – Valentine’s Day. Submissions must be new stories that have not been previously published anywhere. For the length of this contest, they must be published solely on BC.

How to Enter

There’s an official tag for contest entries. The fourth drop-down menu under “Add a Story” is labeled “contests.” Scroll down and click on “2024-01 January - New Year’s Resolution Story Contest.”

Also, if you click on that contest tag, you will see every story that’s been tagged for the contest.

Stories must have at least 2,500 words (sorry Bru!) and a maximum of 5,000 words and be posted as a solo (not part of a series or chapter in a longer work). The stories must have a TG element and for legal reasons cannot contain explicit sex or underage (18) abuse of any kind.

Stories must include a plot Element involving a New Year’s Resolution.

Authors may enter as often as they would like, however an author is only eligible to win one prize.

Jill and Emma will judge the contest. Why? Because they are fellow authors who’ve posted lots of stories (and in Jill’s case, published a ton of them). Because they’ve got the time, being ladies of leisure, sort of. Joanne was reticent, so we let her off the hook.

Jill and Emma will send their scores (one to one hundred) to Joanne to be tabulated. She will add them together and announce the winners. If both Emma and Jill award a story their highest score, the winner will receive the extra $200. The winner would then win $500 instead of $300.

Huge offer for Authors “new” to BC

But there’s an extra wrinkle we want to throw in. We’d like to use this opportunity to encourage “new” authors and readers to give BC a try. Please invite your friends or authors you may know from other sites to participate. We are offering an additional prize for the top finishing “new” author (whether he, she, or they finish in the top three or not) of $200.

Therefore, if the winner is a “new” author who both Emma and Jill have rated highest, that author will be awarded a total of $700.

In addition, should the “new” author elect to publish a novel, Emma and/or Jill will beta read or edit their manuscript at the “new” author’s discretion. AND – Rasufelle, who has designed over a dozen covers for Jill and Emma, will design a cover for the “new” author’s work – all at no charge.

A “new” author is one who has not published on BC in the past, under any name.

Another Huge offer for BC members who prompt a “new” author to come to BC for this contest.

If the winning “new” author identifies a current BC member (prior to today’s date) who made them aware of the contest, their “sponsor” will also receive a $100 prize.

A Little Side Action

To make things a bit more interesting for our 2024 New Year’s Writing Contest, if you send Emma, Joanne or Angela Rasch a PM with the names of non-BC authors you have invited to participate in the contest, you will be entered into a drawing for an extra $50 prize. We’ll announce the winner at the same time as the rest of the contest winners are announced.

Help us get the word out, and let’s get 2024 off to a great start!

But Wait!!! There’s More!!!

Authors love comments. The more they can relate to their readers the better they write. . .and possibly the more often they write.

Our goals are to inspire and motivate authors. But we're also hoping to engage readers. To that end, we have added an additional contest to be judged by Joanne. She will choose the best comment. The winner will receive $50. To win the comment must be posted on a Writing Contest story by an identifiable member (not Guest Reader). The comment must be posted before 2/25/2024.

What a "Best Comment" is -- is solely up to Joannebarbarella's discretion.

And Even More!!!

On February 15, after the contest is closed, we'll post a blog for readers to list their own choices for the top three stories, and why you like them. No negative comments allowed! Anyone who posts a response will be entered into a drawing for a $50 prize. Each person may enter this contest only once. If you list more than three stories your entry will be disqualified.

Entries will have to be submitted by February 22, 2024.

So, come on, everyone! Give us all some fun short stories to start the year and spread the word!

Miss The Contest, Darn it...

I might have missed it, but I might do a story combining my Tarja/Torgue Lake universe. I can't get a break (unless it is my computer), however, I'll post new chapters and stories up sometime soon... (Before December 31, 2024), HOPEFULLY!!

Emma

query on rules.

the new years resolution part, would a story with that as the punchline count, or does it have to be in the main thread of the plot?

Don't want to be disqualified......

Estarriol

I used to be normal, but I found the cure....

Yup. Sure does!

Emma Anne Tate's picture

The rules require that the New Years' resolution be "a" plot element. Doesn't have to be the main plot line, and a punch line works just fine.(You're welcome too, Bru!).

Emma

To make a long story short

If I get inspired to develop my idea the punchline is something completely different.
Instead it all starts off with a New Years' resolution. What could go wrong?

That's good

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

Because my story takes place during winter break from school and the New Year's resolution comes as they are on the way home; nearly the last thing said by any of the characters.

A post to my Insta account regarding the contest. I'm galaxies away from being significant on the site, but hope it gets a few eyeballs. I was wondering if we can get something added to the homepage (link) to the Blog Post announcing the contest so it's more in peeps faces? Some who are 'new' to the site might not know where to look to get the details. If there's something already - I'll make that eye doctor appointment before years end!

Hugz! And Thanks to those who put this on and those considering entering!

XOXOXO

Thanks, Rachel!

You da bomb, girl!!!

The contest announcement is staying on page one; that should keep it visible.

Emma

Terrific idea!

What a fun idea! I'm looking forward to seeing what sorts of stories people come up with!

Me too!

I get it at Staples. Comes in cans. Compressed air, with a little tube that’s great for getting all the horrid bits that accumulate between keys to fly away, up into the air. Where you can breathe them. :)

Looking forward to your story!

Emma

I'm in,

in fact, I already have the first draft done, as a story has been kicking around in my head for a while that only needed a slight tweak to be good for this contest. I've got a second one that might end up being too long for the contest, unfortunately, but I may try and see if I can make it fit in 5K words.

I always want more Snow!

Emma Anne Tate's picture

Especially in January and February! I’m looking forward to seeing your stories, Holly!

Emma

Oh NO! Where is my muse when I need her?

TiffQ's picture

Last I heard my muse was lounging in a resort somewhere in the South Pacific. It sounds like a good time to go find her!
My muse really has a hard time with stories less than 5k words so she is going to have to get off her pretty derriere and get to work soon. I hope that she is up to the challenge since one of my New Year's resolutions is to contribute a story to this effort.

Tiff Q

I often find my muse . . .

Sunflowerchan's picture

. . . I often find my muse sitting in a nearby chair. Dressed in a Sailor Fuku uniform, arms folded under her breast, nose up in the air and a haughty look upon her face. She looks at me, sighs and turns around and says "Baka!" But when I start to question myself, she there to comfort me, she very tsundere.

Got a nudge --- and am going to try

KristineRead's picture

So, I got a nudge on this contest. Came up with an idea, working title is Finding Joy!

Wrote about 1200 words last night, so I think I just may be able to get this out there.

BTW --- for any that have not heard thru connections elsewhere, I am now legally, Kristine Veronica Read. I will most likely publish it under that name, and have to look into how to change it here. I no longer am hiding, as I'm fully out to my family, friends, and my business connections, and living full time.

So there's this thing...

Sabrina G Langton's picture

So of course I wrote my story before checking the blog, before realizing what was happening, before finding out I had plenty of time to write... ha... good thing too. The last thing I need is more time, I like a little pressure (Just a little.) Plus I was surprised at how close I was to the 5,000 words allowed. (4,979) I am so looking forward to reading all the stories. I am usually not a joiner and tend to hide away by myself, but I think this will be fun hanging with a crowd. Good luck, everyone... Sabrina

Self-Editing

Maybe this is an early Christmas gift to yourself.

It is extremely hard to edit your own manuscript. Your mind plays devilish tricks on you making you see things the way you thought you wrote them in the first place.

One method of gaining perspective is to put your writing away for a few weeks. When you finally look at it you will see ways to improve.

I look forward to reading your story.

Jill

Angela Rasch (Jill M I)

Think of it . . .

Emma Anne Tate's picture

. . . as a really cool party, with lots of interesting people and a mysterious bartender who is mixing wonderful drinks you’ve never even heard of. You don’t “join” so much as “attend” — and it wouldn’t be a party without Sabrina!

Emma

Well

when you attend, I am the one sat next to Morn at the bar drinking Pan Galactic Gargleblasters. Say Hi.

Oiled the gears

Jamie Lee's picture

When joanne told me about the contest, I wasn't planning to enter a story. But my brain had other ideas; the traitor.

My brain just had to start off going through story titles and came up with 'Crossroads', the draft I'm currently working on.

So whether I wanted to or not, 'Crossroads' will be the story I enter for the contest. I'm going to have a serious talk with my brain. It needs to know that it's in charge.

BTW, that same brain keeps my awake at night writing another, longer, story that will be posted at some point.

Jamie Lee

Others have feelings too.

Your brain?

Emma Anne Tate's picture

Jamie, that’s a muse you’re messing with. :)

Looking forward to reading your story!

Rule clarification

KristineRead's picture

I know it says it cannot be published elsewhere for the duration.

Does providing a link to it on Big Closet in a post to facebook friends count as publishing it elsewhere? I would assume not, sine the purpose is to bring people here, but just wanted to confirm.

Kristine

Perfectly fine!

Emma Anne Tate's picture

Better than fine! Your instinct is right — we want to bring in new readers, as well as new authors. An FB post with a link to the posted story on BC sounds like a great way to do that. Thanks!

Emma

Great!

Even better would be to also include a link to the contest blog.

Thank you!

Trigger Warning Clariification

KristineRead's picture

I have not posted a story since 2019, and I've never posted one before that needed a trigger warning.

My story for the contest however, does need one, and I'm somewhat unsure of which of the existing ones to use.

The 3 cautions I see that are related are:

Caution: Suicide
Caution: Attempted Suicide
Caution: Discusses/References Suicide

None of these quite fit the situation, I would say it falls between Discuss/References and Attempted Suicide. Writing it, I was thinking Suicidal Ideation, as the required trigger warning.

Do we have any kind of definition for these that I can reference, or can anyone provide some guidance. I DO NOT want to have anyone triggered by my story.

Thanks

Kristy

Trigger Warnings

joannebarbarella's picture

I do believe there is a space in Create Content that allows "extra" information to be posted as part of the Headings, so you can expand on those that you have quoted.

Alternatively, include what you think is appropriate as an introductory line in your story presentation, like a sub-heading.

I can't give you any more advice, because the judges are really vicious!

Good Luck, Kristine.

“Other Keywords”

Emma Anne Tate's picture

There is a blank box under the drop-down menu for “cautions” in the “add a story” feature. The box is labeled “other keywords,” and lots of authors use it to add trigger warnings that aren’t in the “cautions” drop-down menu, or aren’t there in the form they want. As Joanne points out, some authors also put it in the first line of text for the story, above the header.

Emma

The Golden Rule

Your past stories have revealed deep compassion.

Triggers are a problem for many of us. Do your best to help "all" readers avoid them. . .but know that you can't prevent discomfort for everyone. Good writing requires tension. Tension surrounding certain topics will create painful thoughts for some. Some of that pain is unpredictable.

Thanks for asking.

SaraKel's picture

I had an old story idea I liked, but inspiration left after a thousand words. I gave it another go for the contest, and was able to bang out a 7000-word story in two days. Ooops. I ignored it for two weeks, and just finished my third edit pass to trim it to 5300 words. It's been a fun experience, but the cuts are starting to feel personal. It's like a game of Jenga only with words.

Killing Your Darlings

It's advisable to kill your Darlings -- unless you go after Wendy, John, or Michael.

Good luck in the story contest.

Jill

Angela Rasch (Jill M I)

The second story I published (and was paid for)

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

Very early in my writing career I discovered Reluctant Press. They would buy just about anything. The first story I sold them was so amateuristic that I'm ashamed that it's still available and has my name on it.

The second story I sold them was much better. The problem was that in it's original draft it was roughly 80K words and they wouldn't accept anything over 60K. Editing out 20K words was like killing my own baby an inch at a time. Shear torture I assure you.
