Complaints About Genres, or Themes and Elements in Content

There have been a number of complaints recently about Genre and Content. The complaints are always of the form, "There's too much _________ here, I can't find anything to read." With sometimes nastier comments included, attacking whatever the person doesn't like as being poorly written or worthless in general.

This will stop.

I'm taking a harder stance on this because I'm getting tired of removing such blogs and comments as violations of the Terms of Service.

The TOS here is really simple, it's in the motto at the top of the front page, "A friendly place..."

Organizer pages now have an Ongoing/Complete tag

This is in place of the Series/Solo tag that other types of story post have. The default is Ongoing.

For author pages, if you're still writing then Ongoing is correct. :) Complete would be that you don't intend to post more stories.

For title, section and series pages, Ongoing means the final chapter has not been posted and complete means that it has. A section can be complete while the overall title is not. Or a title can be complete while the series is not.

Let me clarify something else

Don't bring an attack on a BC author from another site over here and expect to be allowed to rant on my time. And especially don't do it as visitor. This will get your IP address banned from the site and just did, so you ain't the one seeing this unless you login using a different computer. There can't be a clearer signal that one intends to act as a troll.

No trolls allowed except as characters in stories. This meant you, but you don't know it, trollass.

Hugs to everyone else,
Erin

I'm back!

The Comic-Con was great but after six hours there, I started having back pains from all the walking, so I took some time to take pain pills, relax and then I drove home. People really liked the Quillian color pages I handed out to a few friends and pros and I touched base with almost everyone I know in the industry. I even got a half-hour to talk to Bob Burden! (Flaming Carrot, Mystery Men).

BANNED!

One person did not believe me that I would take action. They have been banned for forging someone else's name on a post. This is more egregious than simply making snarky comments. I'm debating as to whether the ban is permanent.

I'm very sorry that it came to this.

Nothing has been deleted or unpubbed: A policy statement of sorts

The posts this morning about Stan and the comments on those posts have been moved off of the front page but they were not deleted nor unpubbed. They can be found by anyone who looks for them but I'd prefer that the matter be dropped since it seems to have blown out with a few appropriate apologies.

I'm actually impressed that such a hot topic came up and got openly discussed and no one lost their temper.

Ten Million Visitors

About 430 PM PDT we hit 10,000,000 visitors here on BCTS. It took us almost exactly 4 years and 11 months to do that. Other versions of BigCloset, before and during the time of TopShelf, have clocked about 1 million additional visits.

Congratulations are in order, I suppose, if for nothing else than that we survived. :)

Hugs to all,
Erin

New, PDF generation

Bob has added a new capability to BC. Near the bottom of each story, in the mass of links down there, you should find one labelled, |PDF Version|

This will produce a PDF file saved on your hard drive of most of the stories on BC. Some stories with poor or wrong HTML will not be properly converted, but if you need a PDF version for some reason, this may be handy.

Thanks, Bob.

Hugs,
Erin

Back on Main Server

Update - Apr 7 4:51 PM PDT - The site is back, in most of it's glory. The problem turned out to be the voting module not being compatible with the latest release of the database software. So, no voting on stories until I figure out a replacement module or they update their code. And no reporting on old votes, either. Sorry.

Most everything else has been turned back on (or will be) except: reporting comments to moderator (flag for administrator) - that module conflicted with the one that makes Random 5olos possible so it had to be taken up into the mountains and sacrificed to an angry god, sorry. Also, the little clock at the top of the right column that showed what time the server thought it was had a problem when the updates to the search index was run, don't ask me how but the clock interfered and until someone writes better code than my own jackleg module (I wrote that one) we'll have to do without the clock. Isaac says hi.

Many thanks to Bob who did the major work on this debug. We should buy him a bag of chocolate or something, he likes chocolate. :)

Hugs,
- Erin

Interesting

While 80 stories were posted during the last week here on BCTS, another 94 older stories were edited and reposted by the authors or one of our volunteer editors or commented one by some reader. Now in some cases, that was just us opening up the story to file it into one of the new author pages but still, I don't think any other TG fiction site has so much activity going on with older stories. :)

Digg, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit et al

There's a new feature here at BC, at the end of all stories entered as Fiction or Wysiwyg that are rated General or Mature, there are a row of buttons for passing a link to that story on to various social media sites. It's been there since Monday. :)

I don't know if anyone has used it yet but no one has commented on it, so I thought I ought to blog about it to draw some attention.

Tell me what you think.

If you want to post a story Without the Social Media Buttons, rate it Restricted or higher or use the Story input type instead of Fiction.

Hugs,
Erin

How to use the Author Menu - Multiple Authors

For most input types, choosing an author for the piece is done on a scrolling menu. It's very easy to pick an author, just select the menu, type a few letters of the author's name and it will jump to the alphabetic neighborhood of the author where one can scroll up or down until the proper author is highlighted. Clicking off the menu then will leave that author as the selected one.

Dick Francis, British Mystery Champion Dies

Dick Francis, author of dozens of popular mystery novels has died. He was 89. Most of his stories were set in the world of racing, where he had once been a champion jockey.

I have on the table beside my computer, two Dick Francis novels I found in a used bookstore that I have never read. His latest book, co-cuthored by his son, Felix, (I think it is called Silks), I also have not read. I may have missed a few more, here and there over the years but will doubless find, read and enjoy them as I have all of his work.

How to draw a line in a story

Do NOT draw a line using massive repeats of characters because this will make your display too wide for some viewers.

The easy way to draw a line to separate parts of a post is with the HR tag: <hr />

You can include parameters inside the tag like: <hr align="center" width="50%" />

The above will create a line that is centered and half as wide as as the display area.

Erin

Moralizing in comments

There's been a rash lately of people moralizing about other people's stories. If a story offends you morally, you're probably not the target audience. It's probably a fantasy story based on a concept that makes no sense to you. Getting on a moral high horse about it makes you look prejudiced and clueless. Better to just say the story did not appeal to you if you comment at all.

Happy Christmas

Tomorrow is Christmas, the day in which a large portion of Christianity has chosen to celebrate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth more than 2000 years ago, despite the fact that from the best evidence, He was likely born in early March. :) But it is a celebration, not an anniversary, and the date was chosen to coincide with other celebrations of renewal and new hope.

New Feature - Random 5olos

I've added a new feature, links to five random standalone stories in the upper left hand corner of the front page. Standalone stories tend not to get as many rereads as serials because serials keep reappearing on the front page with new chapters, so this will help to redress that imbalance. Plus, I just think it's kind of cool. :)

Skin Horse

Google Chrome Beta has a bug in it, apparently, that considers the javascript that syndicates the Skin Horse comic from WebComicsNation to be malware. This produces a warning when you visit the blogs here.

Unfortunately, the warning also goes out to Google's automated reporting system which has put WebComicsNation on several blacklists. Depending on how you have your settings set in other browsersi, you may not be seeing Skin Horse when you visit the blogs here.

Content

In the past week we had 101 stories, chapters, poems (and one article) posted on BC. Twenty or so of those were standalone stories. We also had 43 blogs, topics and links posted in the same period.

No other TG site had half that much content and I'll put the quality of BC's content in the scale with anybody's, regardless of genre. A few pro-sites may have a better average quality but their best is little better than our best, if at all.

Content, as someone has said, is King. Or in our case, perhaps, Queen. :)

Erin

How to mark spoiler text as invisible until highlighted

A new "spoiler" button has been added to the mini-editor. It's marked S and is between the H-Headline button and the Y-Byline button. Select your text, then hit the button and it will be given a text color that is invisible until highlighted.

Also the Headline button will now make text bold as well as extra large and red Verdana and the Byline button will italicize as well as other changes.

Erin

8350 Stories!

I just got curious and did a count of stories on the site. Counting Full Stories plus Chapters, Drabbles and Poems but not counting Storylinks to stories on other sites or Title/Author Pages or stories that are currently unpubbed -- we have 8350 Stories on BC as of this writing. That means that sometime in the next 70 to 90 days we will go over 9 thousand stories and over 9 million visits. :) This time last year we had about 5200 stories and 6 million visits At the rate things are going we will have almost 12,000 stories by Christmas 2010 and more than 12 million visits!

Furnace Failure

The furnace in my mobile home has failed. I'm using electric space heaters to keep warm and they work well enough but they keep tripping the breakers since this is a very old mobile with only 50 amps service. Three space heaters adds up to 36-45 amps. Add computers, lights and refrigerator and I can't run the washing machine without turning something off.

I'm checking into getting the furnace repaired but my handyman is of the opinion that it may cost enough to be worth just replacing it, which would be $1000 to $2000 dollars, a pretty big hit on my budget. More word soon.

Hugs,
Erin

How to use the title box

Please Please Please Read This!

I have to mention this every once in a while, like about eight times this week already:

Please

Don't use number words or Roman numerals in the title box of chapters because that makes it very difficult to keep them in order.

Don't use plurals like "chapters" or "parts" unless you're going to always use plurals.

Don't use more than one space between words or numbers in titles.

Don't get tricky with the punctuation, like :-- or ......... or putting the title in quotes.

For the sake of my sanity, don't change the title of the story half way through!

Do put the story title and author name inside the story box, too, BTW.
