August 2031

In the late 2020’s climate change became something that no one could deny any longer. As the devastating effects were felt more keenly the political pressure around the world mounted and forced action. By 2026 the sea levels had risen ten feet causing massive unrest around the world as billions were displaced. People who had lost their homes and countries because of the sea level rise due mostly to developed nations having entrenched fossil fuel interests were out for blood. The countries that tried to flat out refuse entry erupted into civil wars as their borders were overrun and their governments overthrown serving as an object lesson for other countries. As they were forced to migrate without resources there were so many it put a strain on the capabilities of developed nations to care for the displaced. Those displaced were forced to find shelter in hastily constructed slum towns on the outskirts of major cities because there were so many displaced there wasn’t the housing to accommodate them.

These slums did not fare well with extreme weather events becoming an almost daily occurrence. The enhanced Fujita scale had to further enhanced with tornadoes going up to category twenty with winds of over one thousand miles per hour. These f20 tornadoes left nothing behind the winds were so strong that everything was reduced to miniscule sized pieces of debris. The government was forced to build hardened shelters for those in the slums while those in the cities were safe due to massive walls that could roll out around the city to protect them from the storm. Having already lost everything once, losing it and having to start over again after each storm made their anger at those inside the cities mount to explosive levels.

Those near the coasts fared much worse but while those inland faced massive tornadoes those on the coast faced much more devastating hurricanes. That scale needed expanded upwards as well with those at the category twenty level having wind speeds of upwards of 900 mph that wasn’t the worst part however. The worst part of these monstrous hurricanes was the three hundred foot or higher waves they came with causing flooding for nearly fifty miles inland. The power of the water was so great that nothing above ground level was left with everything swept away leaving barren earth. There was nothing possible to prevent these one-hundred-year floods so countries were forced to implement high speed subways for quick evacuations until the water receded that were watertight and could be sealed behind them.

Not that these were only extreme weather events with new and much more massive earthquakes making high rise buildings a thing of past. New technology had to be developed and foundations now how to be able to move much more to stay intact. The absolutely most devasting event however, where the rapid shifts in climate with once moist and fertile farmlands becoming deserts those areas with heavy rainfall now receiving a year’s worth of rain in a month becoming so wet, they were basically swamps. Wildfires were a year-round event and with the previously fertile farmland turned into arid deserts the food shortage was exasperated even further causing further unrest and riots in the streets, with people fighting to get enough to eat.

Societal unrest continued to mount as civilization started to tear it about at the seams those forced into the new slum sought outlets for their rage. They were joined in their rage by those in the cities whose could no longer get enough food. As the societal unrest mounted those in the fossil fuel industry still fighting change were made into wanted posters by those displaced and were hunted in the streets and were tried in vigilante public trials and were publicly hanged. The first company to suffer from this unrest was Exxon a mob hundreds of thousands strong swarmed all their offices to find the evidence of those who knew about climate change half a century ago which was released on social media and the dark web. The anger was so great that every single person involved including all of their descendants and everyone in their families were put through a vigilante public trial and hanged and then all their offices were razed to the ground. Soon all other fossil fuel companies and those involved shared similar fates.

Unfortunately, with hunger becoming a much more common issue it looked like society would collapse completely with those in the governments they felt hadn’t done enough in the crosshairs. Things began to look increasing dire as governments around the world starting to falter and the biggest obstacles to dealing with climate change and their families met the same fate as the fossil fuel executives. Just as it looked the entire world would devolve into anarchy, when Christmas eve arrived and suddenly everything changed.

December 2021 Christmas Holidays Story Contest Entry

Disclaimer at the end

What most people were not aware of was that these extreme weather events were exacerbated by the Earth’s mana being drained for the spell dedicated to separating the magical and non-magical worlds and on Christmas Eve that spell fell. When that spell failed the mana that normally went to maintaining it was suddenly free and it reacted unexpectedly to being unrestrained for the first time in a thousand years as it washed over the world changing everything.

Overnight strange phenomena occurred around the world and when Christmas morning rolled around it was chaos as the rush of mana over the world awakened dormant bloodlines rekindling magic where it had long slumbered. Overnight millions of people suddenly had strange and magical things occur around them this caused bedlam in the ministries of magic worldwide as suddenly the spells concealing the magical world failed. Not only that but there now millions of people using accidental magic.

On top of muggles now being aware of the magical world ministries around the world the enormous numbers of new magic users forced the ministries to implement extreme measures. Several of those measures included recalling retired ministry workers and hurrying to quickly train up more workers. The expansions of the ministries of magic were massive with the hiring of many thousands more workers and some of the more populated countries having to borrow workers from some of the smaller countries to cover the shortfall, unemployment in magical communities fell to near zero.

It was three more months before the frantic pace at the ministries finally started slowing down and most of the new witches and wizards were given their introductions into the magical world. New magical schools for adults had to be created and the regular schools dramatically expanded, there were so many teachers hired that the magical community went from a surplus of teachers to a shortage as they tried to fill all the new positions.

Unfortunately, the magical community's exponential increase in size wreaked havoc on the economy as it experienced a severe shortage as there were suddenly millions of new witches and wizards and the magical communities were normally not that large. It was a further three months before the world once more began to stabilize as the new members of the magical community began to get settled in to their new world. With the magical community no longer a secret the magical and non-magical communities sent their best minds to a summit to deal with the climate threat and after a month a plan of action combining magical and non-magical methods to deal with the climate threat.

It took more than a year for the implementation of the plans to start bearing fruit, since the magical community was no longer hidden, they could do things like transfigure some of the planet's water back into ice that would never melt, and vanishing some of the gases in the upper atmosphere. It gradually looked like climate change had finally slowed over the following two years.

After two more years where, magical help made the difference in looked like the planet was finally cooling off. The year after that people began to be hopeful again and the extreme weather events had begun to be only a yearly occurrence, with a population in the billion's humanity was still putting a strain on the planet when the planet struck back.

Life finds a way part 3

Over the next six months new magical diseases emerged that had never been seen before and while some of them were contagious others were caused my magical contamination from so much magic now in the world. Unfortunately, the number of cases were in the thousands, with the number of cases continuing to rise.

There was a rapid expansion of St Mungo’s and several new wings for research were constructed. One of the most prominent new diseases was called magicae deficio this was caused when children’s magic began to manifest and something went wrong causing the magical energy to deform inside the person.

In Britain a year later and this was the case for little ten-year-old Jess Abbot whose year had started out great when her parents had finally sent her to therapist to get help with her depression. Her parents were not that accepting of people being different. This led her to become even more depressed after she finally identified the cause of her depression with her therapist. However, there was nothing she could do about while she convinced her therapist to try and help in expanding her parent's horizons.

Over the next six months my parents began to become more open and she was looking forward to being able to be open with them about her being Jessica and not Jesse. During those six months odd little things began to happen to her and she just assumed it was the normal at first. Things like her hair becoming notably thicker and growing faster with a nice shine to it, her voice stopped breaking and changing staying in the female register. She just assumed things were normal until one day some bullies cornered her because of the feminine habits that she sometimes accidently let slip while at school.

They cornered her in the bathroom and two of them held her arms while the third slugged her because she outscored him on a test. After a minute or two blood was dripping from her mouth and she felt faint, and then there was a flash of light a loud noise and she saw the bullies lying on the ground and then suddenly darkness claimed her as well.

-------------

When I woke up, I was in a hospital and it felt like my insides were on fire and I cried out in pain. A funnily dressed young woman in lime green robes appeared and called out, “oh your awake dearie, let me get the chief healer and your parents in here’.

My parents came in first followed by an older woman in lime green robes and by the looks on their faces it wasn’t good news it hurt for me to breath. “Mom. Dad where am I? Why does it hurt so much?” The older women answered instead. “You are on the second floor of St, Mungo’s Hospital for magical maladies and injuries, I’m sorry to have to tell you this but you have magicae deficio apparently you have magic and what happened to you in the restroom caused an unexpected reaction with your latent magic, it can sometimes happen when someone’s magic is unleashed completely for the first time in a stressful situation.

She continued, “Unfortunately there is no known cure and it can be fatal, however there is a chance your magic will sort itself out. We are going to have to keep you for observation in the wing dedicated to this disease, muggle healers don’t have the ability to relieve the pain. The Ministry of Magic will cover the costs for your care and we have a room where your parents can stay while visiting you, it's time for your medicine. I’ll give you a minute to say goodbye.”

She left the room and my parents came over and gave me tearful hugs and promised to visit often. The young woman who had been there came back and shoed my parents out. “This is the Draught of Living Death it is the only sleeping potion strong enough to let you sleep, we will wake you up once every couple days to check on your condition.

As four months went by, I felt worse and worse every waking moment was painful only the visits my parents brought any joy. Three months later I was awakened to the somber chief healer and my parents who looked like they crying they were hanging off each other. The chief healer who I later learned was named Hannah Abbot, was apparently was an extremely distant relative of mine. She informed me that my magic was tearing my body apart and she didn’t think I would make it through to the new year and this would be my last Christmas.

After that my parents visited every day and I continued to feel weaker and weaker, however the pain had diminished and as Christmas Eve approached, I wondered if I would make it. On the twenty third of December the chief healer in the Magicae Deficio ward informed the occupants that Ollivander’s would be paying a visit to the hospital on Christmas Eve to offer those in the ward a chance to find a wand for free, we were surprised because good wands were supposedly extremely expensive.

Christmas Eve arrived with my family around me and Mr. Olivander arrived with narrow boxes floating behind him. I was surprised at his age he seemed ancient at least ninety years old yet he moved with the grace of a much younger man, he had wide silvery eyes the glowed like a moon and noticed everything around them.

As I was one of the most ill in the ward, he came to me first. “Mr. Abbot what is your wand arm?” I was confused I’m left-handed?”. He asked me to hold on my left arm and a tape measure began to measure me on its own, while Mr. Ollivander was going through boxes when the tape measure started measuring my ears he finally turned around and told it enough and it dropped on the ground.

As he turned to me, he said “Every Ollivander’s wand has a core of a powerful magical substance, Mr. Abbot. We use unicorn hairs, phoenix tail feather and the heartstring of dragons, here Cherry eleven inches Phoenix Tail Feather. The Wand chooses the witch or wizard no one is sure why.” Waving the wand around I felt silly, we went through dozens of wands Mr. Ollivander's eye brow’s rose higher and higher.

Finally, he pulled out a wand from ancient wooden pine box that looked at least a century old. “Ten and three quarters inches, Willow, Phoenix Feather.” He handed me the wand and I felt a pleasant warmth suffuse my entire body and pink sparks came out of the end. The warmth suddenly became burning hot and it felt like my body was melting, thankfully I passed out.

-------

I awoke once more in my hospital bed but the first thing I noticed was the absence of the pain that had been my constant companion for six months was missing. The second thing I noticed was that my body suddenly fight right in a way it had never felt before. As I opened my eyes my vision was blocked by a curtain of hair as I brushed it out of the way I realized it was mine, It was very bright it must be Christmas morning, sitting up I felt a small weigh shift on my chest and looked down surprised to find I had breasts, quickly reaching under the covers I felt my groin and was elated. Happy tears suddenly started streaming down my face as my parents rushed over.

My mom gave me a hug and asked, “Are you alright honey?” I answered with a firm hug and told her that I had never been happier and more myself and that this was what I had been working with my therapist about. “Can I see a mirror please.” my mom retrieved one from her purse and I drank in what I saw there staring back at me was a young girl just entering puberty who looked like a younger version of my mom.”

“What happened I asked?” a voice from the corner answered, I looked over to see Mr. Ollivander in the corner with a bemused smile on his face. “The Wand chooses the witch or wizard no one is sure why I guess for you it did more than just choose you”, my smile kept growing

The chief healer came in announced I could go home tomorrow and that I had to get my strength up because I would be starting at Hogwarts next year. My smile lit up the room, what was once going to be my last Christmas suddenly, felt like just the beginning. As I sat there feeling comfortable in my skin for the first time in my life, I reflected on what had happened. I suddenly felt like I had been given a new lease on life and like a phoenix was born anew from the ashes of my life, which considering the core of my wand it seemed appropriate. I had gotten my Christmas miracle it felt like a new beginning and next year I would start at Hogwarts.

She was born in Silverymoon to Ama’Esti’Aeriel and Tahl’Ar’Deth. Ama’Esti’Aeriel was a bard who was revered for her songs. Tahl’Ar’Deth was a powerful and fearsome warrior whose mastery of the blade was legendary. Her parents had met in Waterdeep and her father had fallen in love with Ama’Esti’Aeriel and her melodious voice. While her mother had been fascinated by his skill with a blade and fallen for his kindness and compassion.

They spent two years together carrying out her father’s ancestral mission assigned by Correllon Larethian himself, during this time they grew very close and conceived a child. Family tradition dictated that the family’s children be born in the temple and dedicated to his service. They had just reached the temple when Ama’Esti’Aeriel went into labor. She gave birth to twins to girls, Tahl was shocked that one of his daughters had red hair, he knew that it meant that she had a great destiny and that it would be a extremely hard life for her. His other daughter was just as he had expected and he felt relieved that only one of them was marked. They dedicated them both to the service of Correllon Larethian and baptized them in the holy water of the temple and noticed the forest animals had come to watch, and then they took them home.

As they grew Ferai their red haired daughter exceeded all others in strength and speed, while Tia proved to be exceptional at mastering the magical arts. Ferai was an exceptionally quick learner and Tia had a great memory that could retain all the information that they took in and apply it perfectly. Ferai had a beautiful voice that sounded like bells trilling in delight at their own laughter, her mother realized that she had inherited her gift and at the same time Ferai began to try to lift her father’s blade and that’s when they decided it was time to begin her training.
She quickly mastered all the lessons taught to her by her mother and father. She was practicing one day when she heard a song it sounded like it a bird, though she had never heard this one before. She went outside to look for the cause of the sound and saw a white raven. She was surprised, because she had never seen a white raven before. She watched while it sang and still singing pounced on its prey. She realized that the bardic arts and those of the Warblade could be combined into one new powerful form. She decided to name this style after her inspiration the white raven.
She practiced many hours to create her own style, it took her several months to perfect it, and when she had perfected it, she went to her father and asked for a blade of her own that reflected her own form.

Her father gave her the family’s heirloom passed down through the generations for 3000 years from Correllon himself, an exquisite elven courtblade whose name had been lost. The blade is rumored to have special powers that only show themselves to a worthy chosen member of their bloodline. Her sister tried to add an enchantment to it allow it to resonate with her songs, but she could not. However as soon as Ferai took hold of the blade she felt the urge to sing and so she began. When she stopped singing the blade continued to carry on her song and she was impressed.
Now that she had a blade of her own, the next stage of her training, her actual combat training. She began to spar with her father every day; he usually beat her soundly because of her lack of combat experience. She began to learn to anticipate an attack instead of reacting. She learned to follow the most minuscule of muscle movements to discern the direction someone would move and determine the direction their blade would come from. It took her two long and difficult years of relentless training before she was able to finally best him in combat. He said, “You have learned all that I can teach you.” Go and see your mother and finish your instruction with her.

Ferai you must look deep within and find the power I know you have to inspire your allies to greater heights. It took her several days’ effort, before she found the core of power within herself. Her mother said, “Now that you have learned to tap that power I will teach you a secret gained from our heritage. Take hold of the power and bend it to your will, now twist it and feel yourself change its nature to pure energy. Now strike the stump to see if you have performed the technique correctly, if you have it should be utterly destroyed.” Ferai struck and the stump was riven in shards. “You have learned all I have to teach you, when you are ready you can set out to experience the world for yourself. However, before you go, we would like to speak to you, meet us tomorrow at the temple.”

She went home to pack and got her gear together and some of those things she most treasured that she could take with her. The next morning she rose at dawn and went to the grove. Her parents were waiting for her by the altar and her father went to a torch and twisted it. A secret passage opened in the wall and he led them down a flight of stairs. When they reached the bottom they proceeded through a door with the symbol of Corellon Larethian, a silver crescent moon. Behind the door was a wooden mannequin arrayed in armor with a blue cape and his symbol embossed on the armor and the cape. She was speechless, her father began, “These have been worn by his chosen heroes for the last three thousand years, you are one such hero your fiery red hair marks you so.

Several items caught her eye. One of them was a gleaming set of pale green chainmail that seemed to shimmer; another was a helmet with the crescent moon emblazoned upon the helm. There was also a pair of bracers and iron-backed gauntlets with two rings upon the fingers, a pair of boots that looked elven made. A tunic that looked to shift colors as she watched, a silver crescent moon shaped pendent and a belt with a crescent moon shaped buckle. She took another look at the cloak and noticed in seemed to shift in and out of focus as if it really wasn’t there. On brackets on the wall behind it was a magnificent bow and quiver, an exquisitely decorated elven lightblade and thinblade and a sheath that she realized must be for the blade she was already given.

“We will help you to don the gear her mother said,” they helped her to don the gear and after she had done so she realized the purposed of the rings and stored the gear inside of them. “She must give the oath,” her father said, grabbed a stone bowl and asking her to hold out her hand. He pricked her palm and a drop of blood fell into the bowl, repeat after me Tahl said, “I will serve to protect the elven people and to carry out his wishes with all of my strength, I will cower from my responsibility nor will I run from battle or my task.” She repeated after him and then she felt a great burden fall on her shoulders as she realized the weight of her responsibilities. She heard a voice call out, “do not let it crush you child, you can do this.”

“Your sister also has a gift for you she is waiting at the house let us go,” her mother said. When they reached their home her sister was waiting when they approached she spoke, “in preparation for you leaving us I have prepared this for you sister.” She handed Feria a bag and a spool of rope. “The bag will carry many things you may need you must only put them inside and retrieve them at need, do not put sharp objects in however. Secondly, the spool will provide you with all of the rope you could need, third let me see one of your rings.” She reached out and muttering a few words added a spell to one of the rings. “It will provide the nourisment you might need in your travels, take care my sister, I love you. “Wait,” her father said, “first you must choose your adult name,” she thought about it for a minute then said, “Ama’Ky’Ianna’Wyn, Ar’Cla’Aira’Tahl’Vanna”.

“A fit choice, you are ready to set out and experience the world on your own,” her father said. They hugged and said their goodbyes as she set out alone into the forest with her waist length mane of fiery ruby red hair streaming down behind her, as her piercing emerald eyes surveyed her surroundings.

Michael was never happy with his lot in life, even though he got to attend the same school with his best friend since childhood Sara Alexis Mangia. He always felt that he should have been born a girl and it kept him constantly depressed, he hid it very well. However, he was extremely jealous and bitter over the fact that the girls got to wear gold bracelets, have long hair and wear pretty clothes and flirt, while he was forced to wear silver ones like the rest of the boys.

Sara could tell something was bothering him because she knew him so well and as the weeks leading up to the homecoming dance wound down, she invited him over to her house to talk. “I will get him to tell me what is wrong,” she told herself.

I was very nervous as I waited outside her door, then I worked up the courage and knocked. She answered it almost instantly and I was surprised by the serious expression on her face. She grabbed my hand and pulled me upstairs to her room, she pushed me onto her bed then turned and locked her door.

Her room had a four poster bed with a pink canopy, a large make-up table, a walk-in closet with a set of full length mirrors, a computer, and a bunch of stuffed animals on her bed, the room obviously belonged to a girl and he had always been jealous of it.

She turned back to him, “now you will tell me what it is that is bothering you,” she said. Looking at her, my eyes filled with tears and I said, “I’ve always felt I should have been born a girl,” then I broke down. Stunned she stared at him and then she felt a wave of pity for him, ‘no wonder he has been so depressed,’ she thought. Then she rushed to my side and held me as I wept.

After I calmed down, she asked me if I wanted to see what I looked like. I said “yes” and hugged her tight. “Calm down,” she said, when I finally got my emotions under my control, I noticed her going through her closet and placing clothes on her bed.

Here try these on, she turned her back and I slipped on the panties and jeans she tossed at me. She helped me with the bra and then the blouse, and then she sat me down at her makeup table and helped me to brush my shoulder length hair into a ponytail.

She applied some lip gloss, some eye shadow, a pair of clip on earrings, then finally spritzing me with her perfume. She told me I could look and I was blown away. I was gorgeous, it was like a dream come true, sensing my emotional state, she told me not to cry or I would ruin my makeup.

I hugged her and cried anyway, sighing she held me until I got all of my tears out. Then she redid my makeup and said lets go out. I was scared, sensing this she said not to worry anyone would notice. Knowing she would never lie to me about something like this I trusted her.

She handed me a pair of high-heeled sandals that fit my feet surprisingly well and after handing me purse that matched my outfit, she took her keys and pulled me along to her car. I was nervous and excited looking forward to what I would experience today.

You Can’t Escape from Justice Part 01

Selena
Selena

Kit was just a normal kid in what he thought was a normal family and he was happy with his life until one day his entire world was shattered in an instant.

________________________________________________________________________

Chapter One:

I was born in Weaver, Illinois to Sara and Kit Walker, they named me Kit, I had two older sisters Willow, was the oldest and Dalia was the second oldest. Growing up in my family was far from a normal and uneventful life because even though I was a dud and had no magic, my mother and sisters did, and I knew all about The Unseen. They were always using magic around the house and I was so jealous. My sisters however were never malicious about it and were extremely kind to me. They would always play with me and usually didn’t mind me spending time with them if they had friends over.

I had a good family life. I’d been happy then, completely oblivious to the world, some can even say naíve. The first time I knew there was something different about my parents was when I overheard one of their conversations. They spoke about something called the White Rose and mentioned The Order several times. Being twelve at the time, I didn’t really put much stock in it. I should have paid more attention.

My entire world was shattered by a single event, which occurred shortly after my twelfth birthday.

I was coming home from school, happy that I got good grades on my newest report card. I wanted to show my parents how well I was finally doing. My joy and excitement were short-lived and abruptly turned into anxiety when I turned onto our street and saw that my mother was not in the garden tending to her roses, like she was everyday. My anxiety abruptly turned to fear and dread when I saw that the front door was hanging off its hinges.

I shook my head, trying to squash the memories and the pain that they brought with them. A curtain of my jet black hair fell across my face, I tucked it back behind an ear and continued to move stealthily along the rooftops as I followed my suspicious quarry. I glanced toward the horizon to check the suns position in the sky and it was almost dusk.

After that fateful day I vowed never to be complacent again and I also vowed that no matter how long it took, I was going to make them all pay for what they had done.

******

I discovered them on Wednesday on my way home. The Order, more scum for the chopping block. I had noticed someone acting suspiciously and on a hunch I followed him to a white Victorian style home with columns out front. I noticed several other men heading toward the house as well and they went inside and into some kind of lounge. I looked more closely and I noticed wooden stakes and many elegant silver swords in racks along the wall, feeling that my hunch was correct I stepped through a shadow near me and into a shadow under the window of the lounge.

There were at least twelve of them in the room.

I listened to their conversation and what I heard shocked me. “You remember that Were we found last month in the woods,” said the leader whose name was apparently Jason. “We pinned him to the ground with our swords and dripped hot wax in his eyes, then John you had the brilliant idea to beat him with the flat of our blades.”

“He begged for us to stop and asked why we would do such a thing to him, and then we beat him more,” loud raucous laughter echoed out the window, and I could not believe that they enjoyed such cruelty.

I thought that was the end but they went on, “then when he pleaded for us to end it we built that pyre and slowly burned the monster alive,” more gouts of laughter drifted out the window.

“The lord must be proud of us for removing another one of the devil’s children from the world,” said one man.

“Amen,” said the others.

“Speaking of which I’ve heard rumors of a filthy bloodsucker in the woods,” “Lets find him, and put this liquid silver into his bloodstream, after we stake him down and watch him screen for a couple hours.”

More laughter then another man spoke up, “lets not forget to cut off his eyelids and drip hot wax into his eyes the whole time,”

After the laughter died down I heard Jason say. “After several hours of that we should burn off his limbs one at a time, then slowly roast him over a fire, and then put him in a clearing where he will get plenty of sun and watch him writhe before his end.”

Cheers and shouts of approval from the men at their excitement of doing such cruel thing, sickened me these men were the real monsters.

“Lets go find the another of Satin’s spawn this Thursday night and send him from this world in a blaze of God’s light. Meet back here tomorrow night at 9:30 and we will arm ourselves for the hunt,” Jason said.

Knowing I had to act quickly I stepped back through the shadow under the window and began to move quietly, but quickly towards the forest.

******

I made it to the forest in around twenty minutes, I moved from treetop to treetop with the effortless grace I had mastered during my intense training. I searched for hours, using the many years of tracking in my arsenal but I was unable to locate the vampire who was supposed to be located in the woods.

Resigning myself to the fact that I would have to shadow The Order tomorrow evening I returned home to grab a shower and what little sleep I could before starting the new day.

******

The next day was uneventful and when evening arrived, I waited silently within view of the leader’s home for them to gather to go out on their hunt.

At first I feared I had missed them and was about to head to the forest when they started to arrive. It took them little over an hour to get properly organized and then they were on their way.

Returning my gaze to the men I followed them for another twenty minutes until they reached the forest. I moved silently from the rooftops to the treetops and shadowed them as they tried to move quietly through the forest. I say try because they didn’t have the proper training to move as stealthily as I could.

I decided to scout ahead of them to see if I could find the vampire first and if I determined he was not a monster then I would both warn him and help him escape or I might even protect him. I found him about three minutes later, he was very handsome with strong broad shoulders, and his muscles were visible under his shirt even from this distance. He was laying on his back gazing up at the stars, his long white hair a cushion under his head. I was too late to warn him though, because as soon as I saw him I realized The Order did as well.

******

The vampire noticed them as well, because he stood and looked them over and in a very pleasant voice he said, “Good evening gentleman what can I do for you this fine evening.” I looked into his eyes and could see the gentleness and sincerity there, I also could see laugh lines on his face. His words also helped to convey his gentle demeanor.

“We want you to die you bloodsucker,” they shouted, I was alarmed to notice that they had encircled the glade without my notice and had him surrounded.

“I have done no harm to anyone,” he said, and I could tell he was sincere.

“We don’t care all monsters must die, it is God’s will,” Jason stated as they started to advance toward him.

Realizing that this vampire was not a monster like many of his kind, and that he should be protected, I silently dropped down from the trees behind one of the Order and using my knife I slit his throat and silently lowered his body to the forest loam.

I then slipped up behind another of the men and silently dispatched him in a similar manner and proceeded from one to another until I had eliminated six of them, opening up a gap in their ring. I silently gestured from the undergrowth for him to take the chance and escape. He did and as soon as he was clear I stepped through a shadow and back through to one nearer to my home.

When I returned home I cleaned myself up and weary from the days activities I climbed into bed to get as much sleep as I could before the new day.

******

I was thinking about that handsome vampire I had seen last night and wondering if I would see him again. My shoulder being lightly shaken and a voice saying, “Selena did you hear that?” snapped me back to the present.

“Sorry I was just thinking,”

“You seem to do that quite a bit these days,” Julie said.

“I have a lot on my mind Jules, what didn’t I hear by way.”

“That due to an incident today, there will be no school Monday, so some emergency maintenance can be conducted on some of the school systems,“ she said.
Just then the final bell rang and we went to our lockers to collect our books, our lockers were side by side, we always picked ones next to each other.

“Did you get that homework for Mrs. Kramer done,” she asked.

“No but l have all weekend to do it and Monday,” I replied with a smile.

As we walked out the front doors, a flicker of movement immediately caught my eye, it was the vampire from last night standing under a tree and he was staring directly at me.

I could feel my heart start to beat faster, and then I turned to Julie and said, “Jules I’ll see you later.”

He motioned for me to come over to him and I did, when I got closer he said, “We need to talk.”

You Can’t Escape from Justice Part 02

Selena

Kit was just a normal kid in what he thought was a normal family and he was happy with his life until one day his entire world was shattered in an instant.

____________________________________________________________________________________
Chapter Two:

“This isn’t the kind of conversation that I would like to have in the open, this is the kind of information that should not be publicly bandied about, it could cause me many problems,” I responded, with a glance to check whether other people were nearby.

“I’m sorry but I don’t know a place I only arrived last week and haven’t had the chance to explore yet,” he answered with a shrug.

“That’s alright,” I answered with a smile. “I have the perfect place in mind and we can get out of the rain.”

My smile grew wider as I continued, “that is if you trust me enough not to be leading you into some kind of trap.”

He laughed, it was a rich throaty laugh and then he grinned back, “I don’t think you would have helped me last night if you wanted to harm me, I trust that you intend me no ill”

I couldn’t help but smile at that, so I showed him the way to my house.

“I’m home and I brought a friend,” I said as we entered. I noticed that my mother was cleaning the kitchen because I could hear her, and my father was in his office, because his door was closed and the lights were on.

“We’ll be in my room,” I called as I led him down the stairs and into the large basement, the majority of which was my room. After we entered my room I closed and locked the door.

He turned to look at me and raised his eyebrows and watched me as I walked over toward the wall of my room and spread my fingers and placed my hand on the wall. The spot under my hand began to glow and I pushed. A small door swung inward into an unlit room, I walked in and light the braziers I had found, which illuminated the room fairly well.

Just looking at the room you could tell it was old, the entire wall on the left was covered with weapons of one kind or another in exquisite class cases, and while obviously old the weapons were still in flawless condition though.

The wall to the right was covered from floor to ceiling with books that all appeared to be hand bound and all the spines were covered with intricate flowing script written in some kind of gold. The books appeared aged, but seemed to have withstood the harshness of time. They seemed to exude an aura of power as if the power of those who had written them was imbued within.

The wall directly in front of the door was covered with several alcoves that held pans of what looking to be oil for lighting up the room. In the center of the wall was an intricate emblem of a white rose that seemed to radiate white light from the design.

Under the design were several desks that looked to be there if one wished to peruse the volumes the room held. While in the center of the room was a circular table with several chairs arranged around it, an apparent meeting place for group the room was made by.

The seemed to be some kind of design on the table that looked as if could be a mirror of the symbol on the wall, however it seemed to be fragmented and the pieces that composed it appeared to be bound to the table.

After he entered behind me I walked back to the door and closed it behind him, then I took a seat at the table and motioned for him to do likewise.

He took a chair opposite me and said, “I’m not used to saying something like this but thank you for helping me last night," he looked embarrassed.

I thought it was cute as I could understand how much he would have to struggle to unbend his pride enough to say thank you, and I smiled at him to show that I understood his discomfort.

"I’m Isaac”

I answered him without hesitation, " Selena."

I looked into his eyes and I saw that he was looking at me so intently, that I had his undivided attention.

It made my heart beat faster, no one had ever looked at me like this before.

"We don’t get many vampires around here, tell me a little about yourself" I asked him, genuinely curious.

I glanced up and noticed that he was looking uncomfortable after I asked him that question; He began to move the pieces of the design around absentmindedly, as he though about how to answer my question.

He sighed and began to speak, a faraway look in his eyes. “I wasn’t always a vampire you know and would you believe me if I told you I was just passing through?”

“I’ve heard that before,” I said then had a thought, “so the vampire thing, when did that happen?”

******

“It might be better if I show you.”

“Show me?”

He smiled. “Vampires have gifts. I can share thoughts and memories with a touch. If you’d permit me?”

I nodded. He walked over me and put his fingers on my forehead, gently touching my temples. I found myself closing my eyes. There was this intense rush and then the room seemed to spin. When I opened my eyes, the room was gone. I was standing in a dank, dark street. I looked for Isaac but he was nowhere to be found. Instead I looked down at my hands and realized they were bigger, masculine.

“You’re seeing this through my eyes as if you lived it yourself.”

“This is freaky.”

He laughed. “Should I tell you about myself up to this point?”

“Yes please.”

“I was born a century and a half ago in a town called Wellspring, in Vermont. I had a pretty uneventful life until I reached the age of fifteen, when disease swept the town and took my parents from me. The years following their death were hard but I managed scrape a living, and then in the summer of my eighteenth year I entered the academy of science. It was hard work but I thrived under the conditions there and learned a great many things.”

His voice echoed in my head.

From there it was like I was him. It was late and I was coming home after spending several hours in the library when I heard sobs and loud laughter. Concerned I hurried toward the noise and saw a group of about ten men with wooden clubs, some of which had nails embedded in them. Standing around what looked like a young woman lying on the ground, the man closest to her said that this is what she gets for refusing his suite. Then he kicked her and she cried out.

I knew I had to do something about this so I pushed through and quickly picked her up and managed to get of the circle and run. They were so surprised by my actions that they didn’t do anything for several seconds. I managed to round the corner and turned down the alley and set her down. Run I told her, I’ll buy you some time. She looked at me and told me that they would kill me, I told her I wouldn’t let that happen and to run. She gave me one last look and ran off down the alley, turned on last time and mouthed thank you before she rounded the bend.

I turned around and the men rounded the corner, where is she the one I assumed was the leader bellowed. I didn’t answer, without another word he swung at me with his club, I was so surprised I almost didn’t step back in time. I told him that he had no right to force her to marry him. I quickly chopped the side of my hand into his throat and he fell to the ground coughing, then I kicked him in the head. He fell to the ground with a thud and apparently one of his friends became enraged and charged at me. Lucky for me he slipped in a puddle of water and hit his head hard on the ground then I kicked him in the head until he stopped moving.

Another two men charged me together and when they got into the alleyway they struggled to swing their clubs and got stuck. Ducking under one blow I chopped at the man on the right’s throat and he collapsed. I kicked the other man in the shins and then shoved my palm into his face. As soon as they fell down I heard a hoarse grunt and looked up in time to see one of the men throw their club at me.

I saw it coming but there was no way or time to avoid it; it clipped me in the side of the head and a nail cut into my shoulder. I collapsed on my back and my vision began to swim. I saw what looked like a woman jump over me and I heard what sounded like several necks snap, and then what I thought was the sound of clubs hitting the ground. Then I heard a voice in a cruelly quiet hiss say, “run for your lives filth,” that gave me chills, and then I heard screams, the word ’Monster’ and running feet.

Then I felt someone pick me up as if I weighed nothing and heard in my ear a voice say. ‘Don’t you die on me.’ That was the last thing I heard before I passed out.

When I came around I saw that I was in a dark room, but I seemed to be able to see fine by the dim light of a lantern.

I heard that voice again say, ‘So your aware now, you know you almost died,’ and then I heard her laugh it sounded like bells.

I went to sit up and the instant I though about it, I was upright. I easily located her sitting in a chair watching me and I noticed I was incredibly thirsty. She smiled at me and I saw fangs, to say I jumped would be an understatement. I was on my feet with the back to the wall looking at her before I had even though about it. ‘Why so surprised, you just like me now,’ she said. That was when I noticed that my heart wasn’t racing; I placed one of my fingers in my mouth and found fangs there.

“Why,” I asked her.

“You saved Heather from that brute, speaking of which I bet you’re thirsty here,’ she reached behind her and tossed the man from the other night at me.

I saw the skin on his throat and my instincts took over, I grabbed him and bit deep, drinking my fill.

I dropped his body to the ground and looked up at her.

“Why, did you do this to me,” I asked again.

“You were dying and I couldn’t save you, and you had gotten hurt saving Heather from him,” She gestured at the body on the ground.

“You also seemed to a worthy companion to me, I have been very lonely this past century, my name is Willow,” she did indeed sound lonely.

The room rushed around me after that, it was so dizzy I closed my eyes. When I reopened them a moment later, I was back in my own room and Isaac was standing before me.

“I spent the better part of a century with her, then I lost her one evening when men of The Order found her while she lay sleeping and staked her, while I was out hunting. I came back just as they did it and I lost myself in rage. I’ve been wandering around the country ever since.”

******

Isaac felt that he had to protect her, not just to return the favor, because he felt she was special.

"If I may ask why were you following them last night?" his tone was now insistent he really wanted to know.

She glanced down and noticed that the design on the table was looking quite a bit more like the design on the wall.

“I was seeking justice for my family,” I answered my voice cold and merciless.

“How does killing them provide justice for your family,” he asked.

I tried to hold back the emotions as I recalled that day.
“I came home one day shortly after I turned twelve, the moment I turned onto our street I knew something was wrong, my mother was always in her garden tending to her roses, and she wasn’t that day. When I got closer I could see that our front door was hanging off its hinges.

“I was so scared, but my concern for my family pushed me on, the place was trashed, broken glass on the floor, pictures were smashed, and when I got to the kitchen my father was tied, to a chair and there we cuts all over him and the other things that had been done to him,” the memories became too much and I broke down in tears.

Isaac rushed to her side and tried to comfort her and he was somewhat successful as she managed to regain her composure.

“I’m sorry.” he said, “I didn’t realize how traumatic an experience you’ve lived through.

He turned to the design in the middle and moved one last piece and the design looked completed, just then there was a loud grinding noise and they both looked up at the wall with the rose design and it was splitting into four pieces each moving toward a separate corner and the white rose began to turn to black.

There was an alcove behind the rose and inside of it was a large black box.

The box was as black as midnight, to look at it was like looking down a dark hole, it seemed to suck the light from the room.
