Part One of Eleven

Chapter one: Flash Back

A woman in a simple looking business suit of a black skirt and jacket over a white blouse, her hair up in a bun on the back of her head with a couple of strands starting to fall down around her head giving her the look of having a drink at the end of a long day was sat at the bar. She pushed the glasses back up on her nose as she looked at an image of a man on her phone.

Nicole sat at the bar looking at a man in the corner with a girl hanging on each arm who matched the image. She had to wonder why these sorts of men thought it was a good idea to splash their money around and think that having a couple of apes in suits will keep them safe. The whole scene looked like a bad movie script. It almost made Nicole wish she was dressed in a skimpy little dress so when she killed him, he’d remember her and so would everyone else in the bar, but it was Nicole’s job to blend in and not get noticed by anyone.

She would always laugh when the movies had some sexy female pull up in an expensive sports car and then look drop dead gorgeous as they walked in and killed the bad guy, but in real life that would never work. You see Nicole was a hit man, or hit woman in her case, well she is a hit woman these days, but it wasn’t always that way.

Nicole use to be a boy called Nicolas, but he’d always felt different at school, and it wasn’t until he had to go on the run after killing a fellow high school student that he realised what it was that made him feel different. His small size and ability to look male or female soon led to a life changing career.

Thirteen years earlier

Nicolas Johnson lived with his dad, not that they were very close. Nicolas’s dad had lived in a bottle since his wife and Nicolas’s mother had died in a car crash that Nicolas’s father caused. Nicolas was smart and spent most his time studying and keeping out the way of his father’s drunken rages. Nicolas was just making his way from one class to another when he heard the girl calling his name, not having any female friends in the school, and even less male friends made him just keep walking, thinking she was calling to some other Nicolas until she ran up behind him and stopped him dead in his tracks as she grabbed his arm.

“Didn’t you hear me calling you Nicolas?” A girl called Samantha Kaye asked with a frown.

“Wh...What d... What do you want with me?” Nicolas asked looking worried as he looked around for any sign of this being some prank by some of the jocks. It was almost a daily thing for Nicolas to find his head down a toilet, or his books knocked out his hands if it was a good day, but having Samantha want to talk to him for any other reason was unheard of.

“Don’t look so worried Nicolas.” Samantha smiled when she saw how worried he looked. “I’m trying to get my grades up, and I hear that you’re the best one to help me do that.” She explained.

“Since when did you worry about getting good grades?” Nicolas asked, still not trusting what Samantha had to say.

“Not that it’s anything to do with you, but I’ve been getting a little sick of the way Jason is treating you and some of the other students, and I’m worried he’s going to end up killing one of you, so I want to improve my grades and get out of this dead beat town as soon as I can.” Samantha explained in a whisper as she tried to not get overheard by anyone walking past.

Jason was the captain of the football team and Samantha was his girlfriend, and they made a perfect couple. She was even the head cheerleader, just like in the movies.

“Does Jason know any of this?” Nicolas asked with a raised eyebrow as he also had the same idea about getting out of this dead beat town, and away from a dead beat father in his case.

“He doesn’t own me.” Samantha snapped back with her hands on her hips. “So will you help me or not?” She asked.

“Not!” Nicolas said just before he pulled away from her and started walking away.

“Why won’t you help me?” Samantha asked, not wanting to give up on getting his help so easily, as she started walking besides him as he made his way down the hallway.

“I have enough to deal with as it is, and I don’t want to paint a target on my forehead by getting in the middle of whatever this passing faze is between the two of you.” Nicolas said as he tried to get further away from her without much luck. “Give it a couple of days and you will be onto some other trend, and I will be stuck with Jason wanting me dead.” Nicolas added as he finally made it to his next class and walked in without waiting to hear what Samantha had to say.

Samantha was waiting for Nicolas when he got out the class and she picked up where they left off. “This isn’t a trend Nicolas, please will you help me?” She begged.

Nicolas stopped walking and looked her in the eyes to see if she was serious about him tutoring her, and he couldn’t see any signs of this being some set up. So even though every fibre of his being was telling him to walk away and not get involved, he couldn’t help thinking how beautiful her eyes looked. “Okay I’ll help you, but only in the evening and I’ll come over to your house to study.” Nicolas said, not wanting to subject Samantha to his father’s drunken state.

“Thank you, thank you so much.” Samantha said as she threw her arms around Nicolas and hugged him, just like she would one of her friends.

“Don’t do shit like that, not where people can see us, and then let Jason know.” Nicolas warned as he stepped back and looked around at some of the other students now looking at the two of them.

“Sorry.” Samantha said when she realised it wasn’t such a good idea to do that. One of the reasons Samantha had picked Nicolas to help her with her studies was because he looked like no threat to Jason’s macho status, or so she thought. Sadly Jason didn’t think like that and Nicolas was to find this out later in the day.

Nicolas was just making his way to gym class in the afternoon when he was slammed into the lockers by two of Jason’s friends. He was then dragged into an empty classroom where Jason was sat on a desk waiting to talk to him.

“I’ve been hearing some rumours about you and my girl getting close to one another. Please tell me this isn’t so.” Jason said as he got up off the desk and walked over to where the two guys had just pushed Nicolas down into a seat.

“Samantha was just asking me for some help to get her grades up.” Nicolas tried to explain. “Do you really think she’d be interested in me when she’s got you?” Nicolas asked as he tried to play on Jason’s ego.

“You do have a good point, but I still don’t like the idea of you being anywhere near my girl.” Jason said as he kicked the chair out from under Nicolas.

Nicolas’s head slammed into the floor making him see stars as he lifted his hands to his head trying to stop the pain. Jason took the chance to kick Nicolas in the stomach while he was holding his head.

“Keep away from my girl, freak.” Jason said just before he kicked Nicolas again before leaving the classroom with his two friends following close behind laughing at Nicolas curled up on the floor groaning in pain.

Nicolas was still curled up on the floor when a teacher came into the room a couple of minutes later. The teacher asked what happened and Nicolas said he fell over, which the teacher didn’t buy for a second, but on seeing that Nicolas wasn’t going to say what did happen, he just sent Nicolas to see the school nurse. This did get him out of doing gym, but he looked worried when he left the nurses’ station later in the afternoon when he saw who was waiting for him.

Samantha was stood waiting outside the nurse’s station when Nicolas got the all clear to go to his next class after missing gym.

“I heard what happened, are you alright?” Samantha asked as she started walking beside him.

“No! And it’s only going to get worse for me if you don’t keep away from me.” Nicolas said as he walked into the boy’s toilets to get away from her. He waited in the toilets until he thought it was safe to leave. Samantha was gone when he left again. Not wanting to risk bumping into her again, or Jason, Nicolas left school for the day and hoped his dad had passed out from too much drink, so he could do some studying in his room.

Nicolas’s life didn’t get any better the next day when he got to school and found out that Samantha had ended things with Jason over what he did to him in a very public way, so Nicolas decided to skip school for the day and let Jason cool down a little, as he knew that Jason would be looking to take out his anger on someone, and Nicolas hoped it would be someone else and not him getting the worst of it.

He left school grounds and made his way back towards the library and the one place Nicolas didn’t expect to find Jason or any of his friends. Nicolas did look worried when he heard a car pulling up at the side of the road. He let out a sigh when he saw it was just Samantha in her car.

“Will you please just leave me alone! Why do you feel the need to make my miserable life even more miserable?” Nicolas asked as he started walking down the road again.

Samantha pulled up on the sidewalk blocking his path and leaned over to open the door. “Please just get in and let me explain.” She said.

“Only if you promise to have a word with your boyfriend and get him to keep away from me.” Nicolas said as he stood just outside the car.

“He’s not my boyfriend anymore.” Samantha snapped.

“You may want to rethink that if you want me to tutor you.” Nicolas said as he got in the car.

“You want me to keep dating Jason so you can tutor me?” Samantha asked looking confused.

“I’m not telling you to do anything, but Jason is going to see me as the reason for the two of you breaking up, so if you talk to him and clear the air for now, you can then end things with him later, when I’m not the main factor in you ending it with him.” Nicolas explained.

“You’re pretty smart aren’t you?” Samantha said as Nicolas’s idea made sense.

“I thought the fact you came to me in the first place kind of proves that.” Nicolas pointed out.

Samantha had a talk with Jason, and they got back together after he had to promise not to lay a hand on Nicolas. So with everything sorted out, Nicolas started his tutoring of Samantha and Jason kept his word, even if he still didn’t like the idea of Nicolas spending so much time with Samantha.

Over the next several months Nicolas tutored Samantha and her grades came up, but she was also spending less and less time with Jason, and she also quit the cheerleading squad to take some extra credits. In all this time Samantha found herself becoming closer to Nicolas, and Nicolas found himself becoming closer to Samantha.

Samantha found she liked the softer side she saw in Nicolas, where as Jason was all macho and alpha male. Nicolas would sit and listen to what Samantha had to say. She couldn’t remember one time Jason showed any interest in anything that wasn’t football related.

Things got serious one evening when Nicolas went around too tutor Samantha, he found her in tears after she’d had a big argument with Jason earlier over her quitting the cheerleading squad.

“What’s wrong Sammi?” Nicolas asked using his nickname for her as he stepped in and wrapped his arms around her.

“Jason found out about me quitting the cheerleading squad, and he says that you’re to blame for it all, and he’s going to make your life a living hell.” Samantha sobbed.

Nicolas looked Samantha in the eyes and was trying to think of something comforting to say, but he just ended up kissing her instead. Samantha didn’t fight him off and soon they were up in her room making love.

“That was wonderful” Samantha said as they lay in her bed sometime late in the evening.

“You were wonderful Sammi, and I think way to good for the likes of Jason Ackles.” Nicolas sighed as he played with a lock of Samantha’s hair.

Samantha was just about to say something nice about Nicolas when her bedroom window smashed into the room and Jason was stood in the broken remains of the frame with murder in his eyes.

“Jason!” Samantha screamed out with fear for Nicolas in her voice.

“You are so dead you little freak!” Jason snarled as he dived straight for Nicolas as he tried to get out his way. Jason was too fast for him though, and he soon had Nicolas pinned on the floor with his hands around Nicolas’s throat.

“Jason! Get off him; you’re going to kill him!” Samantha screamed as she tried to pull Jason off Nicolas who was turning blue from lack of air.

“That is what I plan to do, and then I plan to do the same to you.” Jason snarled as he back handed Samantha, knocking her off her feet with a hand print on her face where Jason hit her. Samantha got to her feet and staggered from the room in search of help.

Nicolas tried even harder to make Jason get off him, but he was only half Jason’s size, and all Nicolas’s fighting did was make Jason even angrier as he started to punch Nicolas in the chest and head. Nicolas felt his ribs break and he knew it was the end, but then Samantha was back in the bedroom with her father’s pistol and she fired a shot that just missed Jason’s head, making him let go of Nicolas and dive back across the room to keep some distance between him and Samantha.

“Calm down babe.” Jason said trying to calm Samantha down as she pointed the pistol at him in shaky hands.

Nicolas managed to get to his feet and went to stand behind Samantha as he held an arm around his chest as he felt the sharp pain in his side where Jason had possibly broke his ribs.

“Calm down? Calm Down?” Samantha screamed at Jason. “You break into my bedroom and try to kill us, and you want me to calm down!” She screamed some more. “I’m going to kill you.” Samantha said in a calmer voice that made it sound like she’d just made her mind up about something. She knew that neither she nor Nicolas would be safe while he lived.

“Sammi, no!” Nicolas gasped out as he reached out and took the gun out of Samantha’s hands to stop her doing something she’d have to live with for the rest of her life. “He’s not worth it.” Nicolas added with pain in his voice.

Once Nicolas had the gun in his hand, Jason saw his chance to get hold of the gun as he could see that Nicolas was having trouble staying on his feet. Jason dived at Nicolas and felt a searing pain rip through his chest. As he saw Nicolas point the gun in his direction and pull the trigger.

Jason fell to his knees at Nicolas’s feet and lifted his hand to his chest then looked down at it and saw all the blood. He looked up at Nicolas and Samantha just as he coughed out some blood and then he fell back dead on the bedroom floor.

“What did you do Nic?” Samantha asked in shock as she looked at Jason dead on the floor.

“Tell the police it was me that did it all.” Nicolas said as he staggered over to the door.

“We will tell them it was self defence.” Samantha said.

“No one will believe that, not with how well known Jason is, and I’ve always been labelled an outcast.” Nicolas said as he winced in pain. “Tell them I shot him and ran away with the gun.” Nicolas added as he held up the gun just before he staggered off down the hallway and out into the front garden where some of the neighbours had ran out to see what the noise was.

Two of Jason’s friends were also stood out on the front lawn, one of them ran towards the house and Nicolas when he saw him leave the house, so Nicolas shot him in the leg. The other friend stopped his advance and held up his hand to let Nicolas know he wasn’t a threat. Nicolas shot him in the leg as well, just to make it look like he was the one that did it all, which in a way he did.

Nicolas waved the gun around as he made all the neighbours back up so he could make his getaway. None of them followed, but he gathered they told the police which way he’d gone as he heard sirens and dogs hot on his heals

Jason Ackles father owned half the town and all of the local police force, so Nicolas knew he would never get a fair deal with the local police, so he hoped to make it to the state line, so he could hand himself over to the state police.

Nicolas made it through the woods and out to the truck stop just of the highway. He was in a lot of pain from his ribs, so he looked for a place to rest, and saw a truck getting ready to leave the truck stop. Nicolas slipped under the cover at the back of the truck and crawled his way deep into the steel he found under it. Sleep got the better of him and he didn’t wake again until he felt the truck coming to a stop, worried that it might be a road block, Nicolas crawled out to see where he was, and was shocked to see that he’d made it two states over. The truck was parking up for the night and Nicolas slid out and went to find someplace to hide out until he could get to the state police and explain what happened.

Not having any idea where he was going, Nicolas staggered off down the road in search of some safe place. He found an old garage and let himself in through a broken back door and then found a place to get some more rest.

Nicolas was woke with a start when he heard the main garage door being opened just before he heard a car pulling in. He crawled behind some old tool boxes to hide until the person left again, but he could see the person from where he was hiding, and also what the person was doing. It was a man, and he looked to be doing something in the trunk of his car before he started removing the number plates on the car and replacing them with a new set.

Finding the hiding place to be hurting his already painful ribs, Nicolas tried to move and ease the pain, but in doing so he knocked over a jar making a noise that soon found him looking down a barrel of a weird looking pistol which Nicolas soon realised had a silencer on the end of it.

The man stepped back when he saw Nicolas to be no threat, and he put his gun away again. “Sorry to bother you kid; I’ll finish this up and be out your hair again.” The man said as he went back to changing the plates on his car.

Nicolas saw his chance to get a lift away from this place, and not thinking straight due to all the pain and confusion, he pulled the gun he’d used to shoot Jason and his friends.

“I don’t want any trouble mister, but I need you to drive me to the nearest police station.” Nicolas said as he pointed the pistol at the man.

The man looked over at Nicolas before he went back to changing the plates on his car like Nicolas wasn’t holding a gun at all. “You have a funny way of proving your point kid.” The man said. “Never point a gun at someone unless you plan to use it.” He added.

“I just need a lift, and then I’ll be out of your hair.” Nicolas said with some pleading in his voice.

“You ever shot anyone with that thing, or does it just make you feel like a big man to point it at people?” The man asked as he stood up and turned to face Nicolas, as he looked him in the eyes like he was looking for something. “You have killed someone haven’t you? I can see it in your eyes.” The man added as he stepped back and started to reach behind him where Nicolas had seen him put his own gun.

“Keep your hands where I can see them.” Nicolas said seeing what the man was about to do. “Put that fancy gun of yours on the floor as well.” He added as an afterthought.

“Which do you want me to do kid, not move or lose the gun?” The man asked.

“Lose the gun.” Nicolas decided as he kept a close eye on what the man did.

The man pulled the gun out of some special holster strapped to his back and placed it down on the floor using a finger and thumb. Then the man started to rise to his feet again with a screw driver still in his other hand from where he’d been changing the plates on his car. Before Nicolas had time to react, he saw the man throw the screwdriver at him. The handle of the screwdriver hit Nicolas between the eyes and knocked him off his feet long enough for the man to sit on top of him and then stab him in the arm with something that made Nicolas feel a little weird just before everything went black.

“Sorry kid, but you really did pick the wrong place to hide out.” The man said as he rolled the body of the young man over to get a better look at him. He lifted Nicolas’s t-shirt and jacket to see what was causing all the pain that was showing on his face, and he soon found the reason when he saw the bruising on the ribs down his left side.

Feeling sorry for the kid in a moment of weakness, the man grabbed a first aid kit out his car and wrapped Nicolas’s ribs before loading him into the car and then finishing off the work on the car before leaving again.

Nicolas woke to the feel of a man in his head with a large hammer and the feel of an elephant sat on his chest. He felt that he was in a bed, but the last thing he remembered was being hit in the face with a screwdriver. He tentatively moved his arms around to see if he was handcuffed to a hospital bed, but he wasn’t, so he opened his eyes and looked around. It looked like he was in a log cabin from the look of the walls. Sitting up made his head hurt even more, and his chest was protesting as well, but he needed to find out where he was and how he got here, where ever here was.

Trying the door and finding it not locked, Nicolas opened it and stepped out to find himself on a landing with a flight of stairs leading down to a ground floor living area and kitchen.

“How you feeling kid?” The man from the night before asked as he stepped out the kitchen with a mug of coffee in his hand. “Take a seat and drink this.” He added as he placed the mug down on the table close to where Nicolas was stood holding onto a chair.

“I feel like someone hit me in the face with a screwdriver.” Nicolas said trying to be sarcastic, but the man just chuckled.

“Better than a bullet between the eyes, or I could have just stuck the other end of the screwdriver in your skull and left you in that garage.” The man pointed out.

“Thanks for not killing me then, and for doing this.” Nicolas said as he pattered the bandages wrapped tightly around his chest.

“Looks like someone already had a good go at doing that kid.” The man said as he pointed at first Nicolas’s ribs and then the bruising around his neck. “Care to tell me what happened?” The man asked.

“Call me Nic, and I’d rather not talk about it.” Nicolas said as he sat down and took a sip from the mug.

“You the Nic that tried to kill that boy and girl in a town called Westville? Killed the guy and shot a couple of his friends before escaping.” The man said like he already knew everything. “Call me Max by the way.” The man said as he poured himself a mug of coffee out before joining Nicolas at the table in the living room.

“I wasn’t trying to kill anyone, it was self defence.” Nicolas tried to explain. He then went on to tell Max what happened and how he ended up in that garage.

“Do you really expect to get a fair trial after you ran out the house and shot them other two lads in the legs?” Max asked once Nicolas had finished his story. “You’d be shipped straight back to that town and locked up, or just die in some prison accident. Max added with a sick sounding chuckle.

“And how would you know all this?” Nicolas asked.

“Let’s just say I’ve had some experience in these matters.” Max said just before he took a sip from his coffee.

“Okay then Max” Nicolas said sarcastically. “What do you think I should do?” Nicolas asked.

“Go off the grid and let me train you to be like me.” Max said.

“Like you?” Nicolas asked, “And what is it you do?”

“I fix other people’s problems, for the right price.”

“A fixer of problems.” Nicolas said it like he’d heard that term somewhere before, then it hit him where he’d heard it. “You’re a hit man?”

“I like the term fixer more than hit man, but yes I am a hit man.” Max confirmed.

“What makes you think I could be a fixer?”

“You already are like me. The first kill is the hardest, and you’ve already got past that.” Max reminded him.

“He was going to kill me, so that was self defence.” Nicolas argued.

“Yes you killed this Jason Ackles in self defence, but what about his two friends that you shot in the legs? Was that self defence?” Max asked.

“No, I did that because it felt good to get some revenge on them, for all the torture they put me through at school.” Nicolas said as he made Max’s point for him. “And it helped me to get away.” He added.

“And that is why I think you could make the perfect hit man. You used your anger to plot an escape instead of just killing them as well.” Max pointed out as he slapped his hand down on the counter top. “Let me teach you to use that gift, and you will earn a lot of money.”

Nicolas sat thinking over what Max was saying for a bit as he drank his coffee. By the time the mug was empty, Nicolas had made up his mind. “Teach me to be just like you.”

Modern day

Nicole saw the man get up from the table and make his way over to the gent’s toilet, and saw this was her chance to kill him. One of the first things Nicole learned was that size wasn’t an advantage when trying to protect someone. Nicole smiled as she walked down the hallway and saw a couple of men get thrown out the toilet so her target could have the restroom to himself and his two apes.

“You got the wrong room darling.” One of the apes grunted as he stepped over to where Nicole was stood just inside the door to the restroom.

“No, I think I got the right room.” Nicole said as she pulled a pistol with a suppressor attached and put a bullet through the first ape’s head, and then she quickly did the same with the second one. This left her and her main target in the room alone.

“Please, don’t kill me.” The man begged as he backed up into the corner with his hands in the air looking scared to death.

“Did that ever work when people begged you not to kill them?” Nicole asked in a sweet musical tone as she smiled at the scared looking man. “Did that family beg for their lives just before you burned down their home with them all tied up in the basement?”

Nicole had taken this job because she’d found out that he’d been a hired thug that liked to burn his victims alive because he liked to hear them scream, so she wasn’t swayed by his begging.

“Name your price? I’ll pay you double whatever they’re paying you.” Was his next idea to stop Nicole killing him.

“Sorry, but once I agree to a job, I finish it, and to be honest with you. You’re not a very nice man.” Nicole said as she lifted the gun up to take the shot.

The man deciding he’d got nothing to lose, so he decided to have a go at overpowering Nicole, which she was ready for as she smashed a small glass vile over the man’s head as she stepped out his way when he dived at her. The room was suddenly filled with the smell of fuel and the man tuned just in time to see Nicole throw a lit match at his head. The man screamed as his head became a ball of fire. Nicole shot him in each knee to stop him running away, and then she left the restroom and slipped out the fire exit without being seen.

Nicole dropped the gun in the dumpster in the alley and then made her way over to her car and drove away. The car was just your standard family saloon that thousands of other people owned, so it blended in and Nicole got away clean, just like Max had taught her. Just another girl in the crowd.

Thirteen years earlier

“Where do we start?” Nicolas asked as he looked at Max.

“We start with you getting well again. And that means taking it easy and letting them ribs heal.” Max ordered.

“Where are we anyway? Won’t the police come calling?” Nicolas asked as he looked out the window over the sink in the kitchen and saw nothing but trees for as far as he could see.

“You’re safe enough here. The police don’t call in here, due to them not knowing about the place.” Max said as he got up and offered to show Nicolas around.

Nicolas was right about it being a log cabin, but it looked much bigger than he’d expected it too from the outside. “Wow, nice view, but I still don’t know where I am.”

“For now, safe will do.” Max said as a final word on the location they were currently at.

Over the next three months Nicolas’s ribs healed and Max started training him to fire a gun and hit the target with every shot. Max also started teaching Nicolas to throw knifes and to blend in.

Max got back with groceries one day after Nicolas had been on the run for almost a year, and he slammed a paper down on the counter. “It’s been almost a year, and Ackles family are still fuelling the fire to find you.” Max said as he pulled a newspaper out the grocery bag and slid it along the counter for Nicolas to see.

Nicolas picked up the paper and looked at the front cover and saw a picture of himself taken from one of the year book photos, and a picture of Jason looking like the innocent victim. “How am I going to be this hit man you want me to be if I can’t set foot out in the world?”

“I have a couple of ideas, but you may not like them.” Max said with a sigh as he sat down at the table to explain it to Nicolas.

“Why do I get the feeling I’m really not going to like this idea of yours.” Nicolas frowned as he took a seat at the table facing Max.

“Given your small size and fine features, I was thinking that maybe disguising you as a girl for the time being would be a good way to stop people spotting you.” Max said like it was a really simple choice for Nicolas to make.

Nicolas sat looking at Max for a couple of seconds like he was waiting for him to start laughing like it was a joke, but the longer they sat looking at each other, the more Nicolas realised Max was being serious.

“You’re not kidding are you? You really want me to dress as a girl?” Nicolas asked with his mouth hanging open. “I don’t know anything about being a girl, and I doubt you can teach me.” Nicolas pointed out.

“It won’t take much to change the way you look, and you already have a lot of feminine actions already. As long as we can make you look different enough, then we can move to a location where I can get you some help in perfecting a look.” Max said, like he’d been giving it some serious thought for some time. “I have some jobs in California, so that would be a good place to make you look like a convincing woman.” Max added in a tone that made the decision final.

Nicolas thought Max was going mad, but he was sick of being cooped up in the cabin, so he agreed with Max and then packed up what they needed in a camper van Max owned, and they were soon on the road, but not before Max helped Nicolas dye his hair and style it to look even more feminine. It had grown quite long over the past year, so by the time they finished working on the hair, Nicolas looked like a girl from the shoulders up. Some girl’s clothes and a padded bra took care of the rest of it. Nicolas stepped in front of the mirror, but it wasn’t Nicolas looking back, it was a girl.

“I don’t look much like a Nicolas anymore do I?” Nicolas said as he looked at Max stood off to one side.

“What female name do you want to use then?” Max asked.

“Nicole or Nikki for short.” Nicolas said as he looked at himself, or herself.

Nicolas thought dressing like a girl would bother him, but truth be told he liked what he saw in the mirror. He thought he looked cute as a girl, where he’d looked like a wimp as a boy. The clothes felt nicer, nothing he’d ever worn as a boy felt as nice and soft as these girls clothes did.

“Nikki, I like it.” Max grinned as he tried to hide his surprise at just how good he looked as a girl. Not even Max could see Nicolas in this feminine creature stood before him.

That was the last time Nicolas saw the light of day, as he soon came to realise that being Nicola, or Nikki for short, was the real her. Max found a plastic surgeon willing to do some work for cash. Nicole soon had her own breasts and for a short time she was fine looking that way, but soon Nicole wanted to be a complete woman and Max helped make it happen.

Max sat at the bar by the pool side and smiled at the beautiful creature he’d help create, He’d given Nicola the Fixer name of Ice, because of her ice cold blue eyes, the only part of Nicolas that still survived. Max looked at Nicole sunbathing, while men fell over themselves as they tried to get an eye full of her. It had now been two years since that night in the garage, and the girl sunbathing looking nothing like the boy that had gone on the run. Nicole was a new person, and a master of disguise, able to play sexy female, or geeky looking male when she strapped down her breasts and tied her hair back in a low ponytail. Being male once helped with the voice, and she could do an impressive job of changing it to sound like lots of different people. So started Nicole’s new life as a woman, and a hit woman.

They found a john doe that looked to be the same size and build as Nicolas, and they messed up the body before half burning some ID that belonged to Nicolas and left it on the body. The police said that it was the body of Nicolas, so they closed the case and ruled that the body was that of Nicolas Johnson.

Modern day

Nicole parked up in the parking lot and then walked down the road to another parking lot before getting in another car and finishing her trip back to her apartment, which happened to be an old warehouse.

Once there she stripped off the disguise and then took a shower before logging onto one of the web sites she looked for her work on. She didn’t take on as much work these days, and she avoided going after potluck targets that had more than one Fixer on the job, which is when you risked getting shot by the competition.

“Let’s see who wants who dead.” Nicole said as she started scrolling through the names on the first site. Nicole stopped scrolling down the list when she saw a name that jumped out of the screen at her. “It can’t be. There has to be another girl with the same name.” Nicole said as she looked at the screen and brought up another site where she could find out more about this target.

The name on the screen was Samantha Kaye. She had become a target after she witnessed a drug deal gone wrong, and had picked a couple of the dealers out of a line up. Nicole brought up her photo ID and was shocked to see that it was the same Samantha Kaye from Westville that had once been a part of Nicolas’s life. Nicole had never looked into what Samantha did after Nicolas went on the run. Max had said nothing good would come from it, and Nicole had no real ties to the place, other than the one time Nicolas had had sex with Samantha, which led to him killing Jason Ackles in the first place.

Samantha had moved away from the town just over twelve years ago, and was living in California now, which wasn’t far from where Nicole was at the minute. Nicole found some photos and brought them up on the screen and looked at the screen in shock when she saw her eyes looking back from a twelve and a half year old boy stood at Samantha’s side with the foot note saying it was her son, father unknown.

Nicole slammed the lid down on the laptop and walked away, but she stopped and looking up at the ceiling as if to ask god why he was doing this to her. She walked back to the screen and logged back onto the web site, so she could take the job on, and then do what she could to get Samantha and the son she never knew she had to safety. Nicole let out a groan when she saw the job was a head hunt, which meant that the first person to hand over Samantha’s head got the money. This sort of job brought out all the crazies, so Nicola would have to act fast if she stood a chance of saving them both.

The drug dealers must have had someone from the police on their payroll because the address of the police safe house was in with the other details, as well as her son’s school address and her old work address, once Nicole signed up for a shot at Samantha.

Nicole soon had her car loaded up with most her weapons and ID’s before she left. Nicole had no idea what she was going to do when she got there, or even if they would still be alive, but Nicole had a feeling that said she had to give it a go.

Part Two of Eleven

Chapter Two: Samantha and Nicolas

Nicole found the location of the safe house where Samantha and her son, who Nicole had found out was called Nicolas was being held. The safe house was a room at a rundown motel with more entry points than Nicole could count, so she knew she’d have her work cut out trying to stop other assassins attacking.

“You got any more info on who else took on this job Ferret?” Nicole asked the guy she had on the other end of her phone.

“I’ve hacked the site, and it looks like all local talent, no one to really worry about.” A man called Ferret answered on the other end of the phone. “What’s got you taking on a job like this Ice? You know the pay isn’t that good, and it could get risky if you get to her at the same time as one of the others.” Ferret asked with some confusion in his voice.

Ferret had been saved from being shot when he got caught up in a shoot out between Ice and another hit man on another head hunt, just like this one, but he knew nothing about Nicole’s past, or the fact she was once a boy called Nicolas Johnson. Ferret had been the one being hunted along with his sister and her daughter. Nicole didn’t like it when children got mixed up in hits. Ferret had a feeling that Nicole wasn’t taking this job to kill the mother and her son, but to keep them safe, and he was more than willing to help her do that, even if she was playing the reason close to her chest.

The reason Ferret became a target in the first place was because he was a hacker that found his way into the accounts of a mob front company, and then he was foolish enough to steal from them, and left enough evidence for them to track him down. The mob took out a hit on him and his family. This turned out to be Ferret his sister and her daughter, there was no other family. The job had been offered to Max, but he turned it down when he saw a kid was one of the targets. Not happy to just turn down the job and just walk away, Nicole had tracked Ferret down and then killed two different hit men before getting Max’s help to make Ferret and his family disappear.

Max had contacts that helped him fake people’s deaths, and that is what they did with Ferret. It did cost him a little finger and a couple of toes, but it was a small price to pay for keeping his sister and niece alive. Ferret felt he owed Nicole a debt he would never be able to repay, so Nicole knew she could trust him with her life.

“I could tell you Ferret, but then I’d have to kill you.” Nicole said with an edge to her voice that left Ferret wondering if she was joking or not, so he stopped asking questions and just gave her the info she’d asked for.

“I get the message Ice.” Ferret said as he started filing her in on Samantha’s life from just after Nicolas shot Jason and went on the run.

Twelve and a half years earlier

Samantha had let the police and all the locals make up their own story while she pretended to be in shock from the shooting. Everyone had thought Nicolas had lost his mind after becoming obsessed with Samantha and broke into her parent’s house and stolen her father’s gun before shooting Jason as he tried to save Samantha from being shot by Nicolas. The fact that Nicolas had left the house and then shot two of Jason’s friends helped sell the story Samantha went with it at the time. The troubles started to get worse later; when Samantha found out she was pregnant. Having never slept with anyone but Nicolas, she knew the child was his.

Her parents didn’t take the news of her pregnancy well, and they took the news of Nicolas being the father even worse. They shipped Samantha off to live with an aunt on her mother’s side before anyone in Westville found out. Samantha gave birth to a baby boy and named him Nicolas. Her parents tried to make her give him up for adoption, but Samantha refused to, and she started raising him while doing evening classes and working part-time. Samantha’s parent’s wanted nothing to do with her while she raised the child, but the aunt had always had a soft spot for Samantha, so she let Samantha stop with her and she helped her to raise him by babysitting while Samantha went to work and college.

While doing her studies and working, Samantha found out that Nicolas’s body had been found, and it looked like he’d been living rough for some time. Samantha was sad he would never get to meet his son, or her son the chance to meet his father.

Samantha was forced to move away from her aunt’s home when Jason’s Parent’s found out about Nicolas. They thought the child belonged to Jason until they saw him, then they got angry and threatened Samantha with the police if she didn’t hand him over to them to raise as their child because of what Nicolas had done to their son. Samantha managed to put a stop to them doing this when she told them what really happened, and what a complete psycho their son had been, and how Nicolas had shot Jason in self defence. Not wanting to see their son’s name dragged through the mud, they let Samantha live her life with the child that had the same ice blue eyes as the boy who shot their son.

Once all the trouble with Jasons parents was behind her, Samantha found a small apartment for her and her son to settle down in. Samantha hadn’t had any contact with her parents since the argument about her giving her son up for adoption. Samantha was getting back on her feet and even though she didn’t have much in the way of money, she still made sure Nicolas had plenty of love, and they had each other.

Samantha noticed there was something different about Nicolas as he grew up and acted distantly from the other kids, and he seemed to like the company of girls to that of other boys. Samantha noticed that he would act and giggle like a girl. Then Samantha got a shock one evening when she got home early from work when Nicolas was eleven, to find Nicolas dressed as a girl playing tea parties with all his stuffed animals.

Nicolas was bright for his age, so Samantha felt safe to leave him to get home from school and look after himself until she got in from work. Their next door neighbour was a nice little old lady that sometimes joined them for dinner, and was always willing to help Nicolas if he had any trouble while she was at work.

“I think we need to sit and have a talk.” Samantha said as she sat on the couch and patted the seat next to her for Nicolas to come and sit down.

Nicolas walked over and brushed the skirt of the dress he was wearing under himself before sitting down and nervously smiled at his mother.

“How long have you been dressing like this, and where did the clothes come from?” Samantha asked when she saw that Nicolas wasn’t going to start the conversation.

“Mrs Slain asked me to take a couple of boxes down to the basement for her about a year ago, one of them fell open, that’s when I found it to be filled with girl’s clothes, and most of them fit me.” Nicolas said looking down at his hands in his lap. “I just felt the need to try them on, and I’ve been dressing like this when on my own ever since.”

“Why did you never tell me anything about it?” Samantha asked looking hurt with the secret. “I always thought I was an understanding parent you could talk to about anything.” She added.

“I’m sorry I’ve made you feel that way mum, but I was scared you would stop me dressing and make me throw away all the clothes I have.” Nicolas explained.

“Is it just the clothes you like, or do you feel like you’re a girl?” Samantha asked as she tried to understand where Nicolas was coming from.

“I do like the clothes, but I couldn’t answer the question about being a girl, I just feel like me, and it feels right to be dressed like this.” Nicolas tried to explain.

Samantha felt that she had known about this side of Nicolas for some time now, and she could understand the answer he’d just given her. She couldn’t say she felt like a girl either, he just felt like he should have been born with different body parts.

“I think you look very natural dressed like that.” Samantha smiled.

“I’ll go and get changed.” Nicolas said as he went to get up.

“Please don’t do that, if this is how you want to dress, then please stay like that.” Samantha said as she stopped Nicolas standing up. “I can’t keep calling you Nicolas while you’re dressed like that though.” Samantha added. “Do you like the name Nikki?” Samantha asked.

“Actually I’ve always liked the name Sara, but without the ‘H’” Nicolas said looking hopeful that his mother would let him be Sara.

“Hello Sara.” Samantha smiled as she held out her arms and showed Nicolas that she accepted him as her daughter.

“You don’t mind me dressing like this?” He asked as Samantha hugged him.

“No matter how you dress or feel sweetie, you are still my child, and as long as you’re happy, then I’m happy.” Samantha said.

“I love you mummy.” Nicolas said as he enjoyed the hug.

Samantha smiled as she hugged her child even tighter. She’d not heard him call her mummy in some years, and it felt nice to hear it again. Nicolas wasn’t a large boy, and he had his father’s gentle features which Samantha knew to cause him trouble in school with the larger boys, she remembered the trouble his father had, and what it led to. Samantha wondered if Nicolas might not be better off as a girl, he looked so natural and happy in the way he acted now he was dressed as a girl.

“Will you show me what clothes you have, so I can see what you need to carry off this look more often.” Samantha said as she got to her feet and held out her hand to help Sara get up.

Nicolas, now Answering to the name Sara, smiled as she let her mother help her up, and then Sara showed her to the box in the back of the closet in her room where she kept all of Sara’s things.

“Sara doesn’t have many clothes mummy.” She said as she laid it all out on Nicolas’s bed for Samantha to see.

“You don’t have very many things do you?” Samantha said with a sigh as she referred to Nicolas as a girl called Sara. “I think we need to go and do a little shopping for you then.”

“We can’t afford to waste money on clothes for me to wear around the house.” Sara argued with her mother’s idea.

“I think we can spare a little bit to have some fun as mother and daughter.” Samantha said with a wave of her hand. Dismissing any more worries from Sara about her idea.

Sara wanted to argue against her mother’s idea, but the thought of going shopping with her mother dressed as a girl, was a dream come true, so she ended up grinning in agreement. “What if people recognise me or you?” Sara asked.

“We’ll just say you’re a niece visiting for a couple of days.” Samantha shrugged. “It’s not like either of us have a lot of friends to bump into.” She pointed out.

Samantha helped Sara do something with her hair, and then she smiled when she saw how pretty Nicolas looked as girl. “I’m scared mummy.” Sara said looking nervous about going out looking like a girl.

“You’ll be just fine. I’m looking for any sign of you being a boy, but all I can see is a pretty girl waiting to go shopping with her mother.

Samantha and Sara left their apartment and walked down the hallway to the lift and then road it down to the parking area where Samantha’s car was parked. They never saw anyone they knew, which helped to relax Sara, and they were soon in the car and heading to one of the many malls in the area to do some shopping.

Sara was nervous when they got to the mall, but Samantha soon talked Sara into leaving the car, and they did a little window shopping so Sara could get used to being around people dressed the way she was. No one started screaming Sara was a boy and laughing at her, so she was soon just acting like a girl out shopping with her mother for some new clothes.

The two of them had a wonderful time, and they got some more dresses for Sara in a sale, as well as underwear and a starter makeup kit so she could practice applying it when at home. From that day forward the minute Nicolas got home he went to his room and got changed into Sara’s clothes, styled his hair in a more feminine look and became Sara, Samantha’s daughter.

Nicolas spent the next two years becoming Sara at weekends and in the evening. Samantha started to notice a marked difference in Nicolas’s mood when he was Sara to what he was like as Nicolas, and she realised that Nicolas was a girl, and she needed to help her come out and start living her life, so she started looking into what she could do to help, and also into moving to a new area where they could start a new life as mother and daughter where no one knew them.

“We need to sit and have a talk sweetie.” Samantha said one night when she got home from work to find that Sara had cooked dinner for them both again. Sara had become quite a little housewife to her mother since becoming herself.

Sara took a seat at the table and looked over at her mother worriedly. “What is it mother? Has someone found out about Sara? Does this mean I have to stop?” Sara asked close to tears. “I can’t mummy; I don’t want to be Nicolas anymore.” Sara pleaded.

“Calm down sweetie and let me talk will you.” Samantha frowned. “I want to talk to you about moving to a new area and letting you live as Sara, and going to see a doctor about making the outside match the inside.” Samantha explained.

“What? You want me to become Sara for real?” She asked with shock in her voice “Go to school and everything?” Sara asked as she tried to make sure she was hearing her mother correctly.

“Yes honey, I want you to start living the life I think you should have had from the start, as a girl.” Samantha got out just before Sara dived on her knee and hugged her.

“Thank you mummy, thank you so much.” Sara said as she hugged her mother.

“Don’t get me wrong sweetie when I say it’s going to be a tough journey and a lot of people will not be happy with what you’re doing if they find out.” Samantha warned.

“No worse than I’ve been living with as Nicolas, mother, and I feel like this is the real me anyway. Being a boy is harder than being a girl to me.” Sara explained, so with their minds made up, Samantha and Sara started looking at a new area to move into, so Nicolas could start and look at transitioning into Sara fulltime.

Samantha could only look for a new apartment in other area’s when she wasn’t working, so this made it an evening thing for the two of them. Samantha thought it best that Nicolas go out looking with Samantha instead of Sara going out in the late evening as they checked out the apartments.

Nicolas wasn’t happy to be dressing as Nicolas more than he needed to be, but he could understand the reason for his mother not wanting them to get caught up in any trouble with anyone and them find out Sara wasn’t a real girl.

Samantha had been speaking to a girl at the office she worked at and the girl had told her about an apartment that had not long become empty in the same apartment block the girl’s sister was living in. Samantha made some calls and found out the place was still available and she arranged to meet the landlord.

“Are you sure this is the place mum?” Nicolas asked as his mother parked up outside the apartment block. Nicolas thought the place looked more up market than the price being asked for it indicated.

“This is the address the man on the phone gave me.” Samantha said.

It turned out to be the right address and they both loved the area and the apartment was nice and clean, so Samantha signed some paperwork and left the security deposit before she and Nicolas left looking excited about their new apartment where Sara would be living with her mother, not Nicolas.

“Let’s call and grab some dinner to celebrate.” Samantha grinned as she pulled into a parking lot at the side of a diner.

The two of them were soon sat at a table and making their orders. Then ten minutes later they were eating. The diner was quiet as it was getting late, but there were still a group of men sat over in a corner booth. Samantha and Nicolas were just working out what desert to have when they saw another group of men enter the diner. Samantha knew there was going to be trouble when she saw that all the men that just entered were wearing masks to hide their faces and they were heading straight for the group of men sat at the corner booth.

Samantha had just enough time to push Nicolas to the ground and throw herself on top of him before the men started shooting at each other. They heard a lot of loud bangs and scream as the men shot each other. Samantha let out a scream of her own when she felt someone pulling Nicolas from under her. She looked up just in time to see one of the men that just entered the diner using Nicolas as a shield.

“Sara!” Samantha screamed, using her son’s female name as she tried to pull Nicolas away from the man.

The man looked confused just long enough for Samantha to punch him in the face and knock off his mask, so she could get a good look at him. Having lost the mask and just being seen by Samantha, he raised his gun to shoot her, but had to run when one of the other men got off a shot and almost hit him with it.

Samantha was still holding Nicolas in her arms sobbing when the police arrived on the scene. The police took them both to the precinct once they both got the all clear from the medics. Samantha was angry that the man who tried to use her child as a shield to save his own life had got away, so Samantha looked through some mug shots until she found him.

It turned out that the man Samantha picked out was the son of a known drug dealer called Seeley Gunn, and his father was called Damon Gunn but they had never been able to make anything stick, so arresting his son and charging him with various counts of murder may make his son more willing to help them build a case against his father, and with Samantha willing to give evidence against the son, that would stop him from picking up where the father left off.

Samantha and Nicolas were both dead on their feet by the time the police got done taking their statements and Samantha had done a line up where she identified Seeley Gunn. A couple of officers dropped the two of them off at Samantha’s car. Samantha and Nicolas made their way home so they could get some sleep.

Nicolas didn’t go to school the next day and Samantha called in sick so they could catch up on some of the sleep they lost with not getting home until four in the morning. Samantha was just making the two of them a late breakfast when there was a knock on the apartment door. Samantha went to see who it was and looked puzzled when she saw a couple of plain clothed detectives she’d spoken to the night before.

Modern day

“Hello detectives, what do you need me for now?” Samantha asked looking worried.

“We need you and your son to come with us now Miss Kaye.” One of the detectives said looking nervous as he kept looking up and down the hallway outside the apartment.

“Am I being arrested?” Samantha asked.

“No, we need to take you in to custody for your own protection.” The second detective said as he stepped into the apartment to get his point across.

“What’s going on, and why do I need protection?” Samantha asked as she stopped moving and turned to face the detectives. Her body language said they needed to talk or she wasn’t moving another step.

“Word on the street is the father of the man you identified as one of the shooters at the diner has taken out a contract on you.” The detective explained.

“Contract? What do you mean by that?” Samantha asked looking confused.

“They’re trying to say that someone has hired people to kill you mum.” Nicolas said as he walked out the kitchenette into the small hallway where his mother was still stood with her arms folded across her chest. Nicolas had been too tired when they got home to do anymore that climb into bed, so he wasn’t wearing any of his girl clothes when the detectives turned up.

Samantha’s arms fell to her side when she realised what Nicolas had just said. “I thought you said my identity would be kept secret?” Samantha snapped as she pulled Nicolas closer like it was him in danger and not her.

“We’re looking into how they got your name so fast, but until we can find out, I think it best we take you to a safe house.” The first detective said.

Samantha had a lot more she wanted to say, but getting out of the apartment before gun toting thugs arrived to kill her, seemed like the best thing to do. The two of them quickly packed a couple of bags and left with the detectives.

Samantha and Nicolas found themselves in a seedy little motel rather than a house, and it soon got boring and Nicolas was missing being Sara, but the detectives had no idea how long it would be before they got the price removed from his mother’s head, and Nicolas didn’t think the police officers protecting them would understand his reason for wearing a dress and makeup like a girl.

“I know how you feel sweetie.” Samantha said as she pulled Nicolas closer to her as they lay on one of the beds in the room. “I’m sure it won’t be much longer before we can put all this behind us, and Sara can come back.” Samantha said it in such a way as to not tip off the officer as to what they were talking about.

Nicolas looked worried when there was a knock on the motel room door.

“Don’t worry kid; it’s just the pizza delivery guy.” One of the two officers supposed to be protecting them said as he got up to answer the door.

     “Pizza again?” Nicolas whined.

“If we don’t get some real food soon, I’ll shoot myself.” Samantha snapped. All they had had to eat over the past week was pizza, Chinese, Mexican and cereal.

The officer just shrugged like he didn’t care as he went to the door and looked through the peephole before he opened it without bothering to put the chain on first.

“Someone order some pizzas?” A guy in a baseball cap and shirt with the name of a pizza company on it.

“Keep the change.” The officer said as he took the two pizza boxes of the guy at the door and then slapped some notes in his hand. He lifted the lid on the top pizza box and saw that this wasn’t one of the pizza’s they had ordered. “This is the wrong pizza!” The officer pointed out as he turned back to show the delivery guy.

“I wouldn’t worry about it; you won’t get to eat it anyway.” The pizza delivery guy said as he pointed a gun at the officer’s head and pulled the trigger. He soon took care of the second officer in the same way and then pointed the gun at Samantha and Nicolas.

“Please let my son go.” Samantha begged the man pointing the gun at them.

“I’m sorry, but he’s seen what I look like, and I can’t have that.” The man said in a cold voice, void of any emotion. “I’ll make sure it’s quick though.” He added as he got ready to shoot.

Samantha pulled Nicolas close to her as she sobbed. “I’m sorry sweetie, I’m so sorry.” Samantha knew she was going to be following her son to the afterlife very soon as she closed her eyes and waited for the shots to ring out.

Part Three of Eleven

Chapter Three: Come with me if you want to live

Nicole had found the motel and taken a room on the ground floor where she had easy access to her car and weapons. The place the police had picked couldn’t be worse for defending against attack. She could think of twenty different ways to take out Samantha and Nicolas.

It was a couple of days before things kicked off with a Pizza delivery guy that looked nothing like a pizza delivery guy. Nicole noticed the fact his uniform of a shirt and baseball cap didn’t fit. The shirt looked to small, like he’d taken it from a much smaller person. She also saw the handle of a gun stuffed down the back of his trousers.

Nicole picked up her own gun and screwed on the suppresser and was quickly sneaking up to the second floor where Samantha and Nicolas were. She got to the room to late to save the two officers’, but the man was just aiming at Nicolas. Nicole raised her gun and put two bullets in the man’s head without a second thought. She then smiled as she saw a much older looking Samantha, but she still looked good thought, Samantha was kneeling on the floor with her arms wrapped around a boy, but Nicole could have so easily mistook him for a girl given his small size and long dark hair held back in a ponytail.

Samantha heard a ‘thunk thunk’ sound and then a thud as someone fell to the ground. She slowly opened her eyes and saw the pizza delivery guy on the floor with a bloody mess where his head once was.

“Are either of you hurt?” A woman in a leather trouser suit asked as she stood in the doorway with a long barrelled gun in her hand.

Samantha just looked at her with fear in her eyes, but she couldn’t see the woman’s eyes because of the dark lenses in the sunglasses covering them.

“I asked if either of you were hurt?” The woman snapped as she stepped back and looked around like she was expecting more trouble.

“No, we’re not hurt, but please don’t kill us.” Samantha begged as she kept Nicolas hugged tight to her.

“If I wanted you dead lady, you’d be dead.” The woman snapped. “I need the two of you to get up and come with me now!” She added as she waved for Samantha and Nicolas to get up using the same hand as she had the gun in, so she ended up waving the gun around, which didn’t make Samantha feel any more relaxed.

“Why should we trust you?” Samantha asked trying to look brave as she got to her feet and helped Nicolas to get to his feet.

“Because you’re both still breathing, and he’s dead on the floor.” The woman said as she pointed at the body on the floor with blood pooling around the large hole in his head.

“Who the hell are you?” Samantha asked with a frown, not happy with the woman’s attitude.

“You can call me Ice.” Nicole said. “Now come with me if you want to live.” Nicole added as she groaned in her head for using the classic line from the Terminator movie.

Not wanting to upset this woman who just saved their lives, Samantha and Nicolas grabbed their things and were soon in Nicole’s car and driving away into the night.

“Thank you for saving us back there Miss Ice.” Samantha said as she looked over at the blonde woman dressed in leather trousers and jacket. “Where are we going?” Samantha asked.

“The names just Ice, so drop the Miss.” Nicole said in a cold tone as she tried to keep her long dead feeling for the woman sat next to her under control.

Nicole wanted to laugh as she thought what Max would say if he was sat next to her right now. “What you think you doing kid? Never let your feeling get in the way of doing your job.” Would be his words to her. Nicole was breaking all the rules taking on this job, just to turn around and kill anyone who came at Samantha and her son.

“The only way to stop them coming after you would be to let them think you’re dead, or remove the person paying the bounty on both your heads.” Nicole explained.

“It’s me they’re after, not Nicolas.” Samantha pointed out.

“The price is for both of you dead.” Nicole said in a harsh tone as she tried to make the two of them understand just how much trouble they were in.

“But he’s just a child. How can they do something like this?” Samantha asked with fear in her voice.

“People like that don’t care who they hurt, just as long as it doesn’t affect the bottom line.” Nicole said.

“How do you know so much about this sort of thing, and why are you helping us?” Samantha asked.

“You ask a lot of questions.” Nicole answered, not having an answer for Samantha’s questions, she couldn’t tell her the truth, or even part of it without Samantha finding out who she once was, and what she was now.

“Will you at least tell me where we’re heading then?” Samantha asked when she saw that this mysteries woman wasn’t going to answer her other questions.

“Again with the questions.” Nicole said as she shot Samantha smile. She soon stopped though when she saw Samantha give her a strange look.

Samantha was glad to see that this cold hearted woman could smile and act more human when she wanted to, but at the same time she saw something she recognised in the woman’s smile, but couldn’t remember where from.

“I don’t have a set place to head to, that will make it harder for the others to locate you.” Nicole explained as she tried to cover the reason for Samantha’s strange look just now.

“Wouldn’t going to the police be the best thing to do?” Samantha asked.

“They have people in the police, how do you think we all tracked you down?” Nicole said before she realised what she was saying.

“What do you mean, we?” Samantha asked. “Are you telling me you’re just like them?” She asked with anger in her voice.

“I’m nothing like that man back there.” Nicole screamed as she pulled to the side of the road and turned on Samantha. “I never kill children to start with.” Nicole added.

“So you’re a killer?” Samantha asked. “You kill people for money?”

“I didn’t see you complaining back there when I shot the pizza delivery guy.” Nicole snarled. “Yes I kill people for a living, but right now my only goal is keeping the two of you alive, and if I’m going to do that, then we need to change the way the two of you look.” Nicole added.

Samantha and Nicolas looked at each other and spoke with their eyes, as they worked out whether or not to let this mysterious woman know about Sara. If the bad guys were looking for a mother and a son, then a woman and her daughter would go unnoticed. Nicolas looked convincing enough as a girl, that no one would know anything unless they saw Sara without her clothes.

“What am I missing?” Nicole asked when she saw the look they gave each other. “If you have some idea’s please share with the rest of the class.

“Tell her mum.” Nicolas said with a look to let her know it was the best plan.

“Nicolas and I were about to move to a new apartment in another part of town, so he could start living as a girl called Sara.” Samantha explained.

“If I become my mother’s daughter, will that help stop them finding us?” Nicolas asked from the back seat of the car.

Nicole was having trouble getting past the fact her son was more like his father than she ever thought. “Yes it would keep them off our trail.” She said as she tried to recover from the shocking news. “We need to find a mall, so you can get her some clothes and other things she’ll need.” Nicole added as she started to form a plan.

“Will it be safe for me to enter a shop?” Samantha asked.

“Yes, but I’ll give you some cash to buy the things you need, don’t use any of your credit cards, and I’ll need your cell phone as well.” Nicole asked as she held out her hand.

Samantha handed over her cell phone, and then watched as Nicole took off the back and pulled out the battery and the sim card before throwing it all out the window of the car.

“What did you do that for?”Samantha asked, shocked at what she’d just seen Ice do with her phone.

“They can track us using it.” Nicolas said from the back seat.

“Clever kid.” Nicole smiled as she looked in the rear view mirror at Nicolas.

“I saw it in a movie, but thought it was just make believe.” Nicolas replied.

“Some is, some isn’t, but its better safe than sorry, and using cards or cell phones registered to you is a sure way to inform the bad guys where you are.” Nicole pointed out.

Nicole was soon pulling into a strip mall where Samantha could grab items for Nicolas to become Sara, using a couple of different shops to stop anyone putting two and two together and seeing that she was buying a complete outfit.

“Buy the items you need from as many of the shops as you can, and use only this and don’t call anyone, not if you want to live beyond tomorrow.” Nicole warned. “That wasn’t a threat; I was just stating a fact.” Nicole added when she saw the worried look Samantha was giving her.

Samantha still wasn’t sure if she could trust this woman, she still hadn’t seen her eyes, just her own reflection in the sunglasses the woman still wore.

“Buy me something pretty mummy.” Nicolas said in a more feminine sounding voice.

Nicole turned and looked at Nicolas, surprised at just how like a girl he sounded. “Make the outfit practical and plain. We need the two of you to blend in, not stand out and get noticed.” Nicole warned. “Pick a new hair colour as well, and buy a pair of hair scissors while you’re at it.” Nicole added.

“You style hair between assassinations?” Samantha asked, heavy with sarcasm. Samantha soon regretted what she said when she saw the twitch of Ice’s lip. “I’d better be going now then.” She added as she opened the car door.

“Yes, that would be a good idea.” Nicole replied as she went back to looking out the front window of the car.

“I’ll be as quick as I can, so behave for Miss Ice while I’m gone sweetie.” Samantha said as she looked over at Nicolas sat in the back seat.

“Your child will be as safe with me as he is with you. I give you my word.” Nicole said without bothering to turn in Samantha’s direction. “Go and get what you need.” Nicole growled.

Samantha not being sure it was wise to keep upsetting an assassin, smiled once more towards Nicolas, and then she got out, closed the door and made her way into the first of the shops.

Nicole knew they were safe for the time being, so she leaned her head back on the headrest and closed her eyes to think over their next move. She looked over when she heard Nicolas moving in the back. Nicole found Nicolas leaning between the seats looking right at her.

“You don’t look much like an assassin.” Nicolas said as he tried to learn more about this woman that seemed intent on protecting them.

“Have you met many assassins?” Nicole asked, not wanting to spend too much time speaking to this child.

“No, but I’ve seen them in movies and on TV.” Nicolas replied. “They always dress like super models and drive cool looking sports cars.” Nicolas added with some excitement in his voice.

“You can’t believe everything you see on TV kid.” Nicole laughed. “And I’m sorry I’m not pretty enough for you.” Nicole added as she looked over at him.

“I didn’t mean you weren’t pretty Ice, I just mean you don’t look much like a killer.” Nicolas said sounding flustered over his possible upset of the woman trying to keep him and his mother alive.

“Don’t sweat it kid, I know what you mean, and looking flash and standing out is a sure way to get arrested or shot.” Nicole pointed out. “The trick is to get close to the target and carry out the job and then slip away again without people remembering anything about you.”

“How did you end up doing this for a living?” Nicolas asked.

“I’m not sure your mother would like me talking to you about my career path.” Nicole said trying to kill the conversation before she said the wrong thing. “What about you and this wanting to be a girl thing? How did that come about?” Nicole asked.

“I just don’t feel like I fit in as a boy. I don’t act like a boy, and I feel happier in a dress than I do trousers.” Nicolas shrugged, not sure how to explain the way he felt.

Nicole thought back to when she was still a boy of Nicolas’s age, and how she felt pretty much the same way as Nicolas had just described, but with the death of her mother, and trying to keep out of her father’s way, it was never realised until she met up with Max and had to disguise herself as a girl and she then realised just how right it felt to be dressed in female clothing. Nicole was snapped out of her thoughts when she heard Nicolas speaking to her again.

“Does any of this bother you, me wanting to be a girl?” Nicolas asked with worry in his voice.

“Not at all Sara.” Nicole smiled, as she tried to make Nicolas feel more relaxed over what they had just been speaking about. “I’ve spent the last ten years pretending to be lots of different people, while I worked.” Nicole added.

“Do you mean killing people?” Nicolas asked nervously.

“Yes, when I killed people.” Nicole replied with a shrug. She’d had very little contact with people, other than when she killed them. Making friends and letting people get to know her would just give others a way to get back at her if a job ever went wrong. “So is it just you and your mum then, no father in the picture?” Nicole asked, wanting to change the subject, and also find out what Samantha might have said to Nicolas about his father.

“Yes it’s just me and mother.”Nicolas said with a sad edge to his voice. “Mum said she was in love with my father, and hoped they might have got back together one day, but he died.” Nicolas added as he slumped back in the back seat.

“Doesn’t sound like much of a man if he just left your mum after she got pregnant.” Nicole said with a tone that said she didn’t think much of his father. Nicole did this to see how Nicolas would react.

“Don’t talk about him like that!” Nicolas snapped as he sat forward again with anger in his eyes. “He had to run, or the police were going to kill him. He never knew mother was pregnant, and he died before she had time to tell him.” Nicolas said in defence of the man his mother had fallen in love with.

Nicole wasn’t sure the boy she use to be, ever lived up to the man Samantha had described to Nicolas, but she thought that it must make Nicolas feel better to think of his father being some great guy. Nicole use to think of her father being someone else when she was a boy of Nicolas’s age, instead of the drunk that killed his mother.

“So what happened to this wonderful man then?” Nicole asked as she took no notice of Nicolas’s anger towards her.

“I’m not sure of the details. Mother just said he died while on the run.” Nicolas said crest fallen again, but his head shot up as he had a thought. “Did you kill him? Is that why you came to rescue us today?” Nicolas asked with anger in his voice again.

“I never killed your father kid.” Nicole said. She didn’t think she was lying because the man Nicolas just described never existed in the first place. “I have my reasons for keeping you and your mother alive.”

“Did you know my father?” Nicolas asked.

Nicole just rested her head on the headrest again, this told Nicolas that she’d done talking for the time being, so Nicolas sat back and looked out the window. He was eager to get the clothes, so he could become Sara and then become a girl on the run with her mother, while being protected by some mysterious female assassin.

Nicole was woken from the rest when her cell phone started ringing, she knew it was going to be Ferret, because he was the only person with the number, as it was a burn phone that would be thrown away after a couple of days use.

“I need to step out the car and take this call.” Nicole said as she looked at Nicolas sat in the back.

“Fine, whatever.” Nicolas said, but he looked more like an angry teenage girl as he said it.

Nicole got out the car and walked over to an empty part of the parking lot and then answered the call. “Hey Ferret. Got any news for me?” Nicole asked in a tired voice.

“News? You’re all over the news, and I do mean all over it.” Ferret said as he looked at the pictures of a woman and a twelve year old boy on the TV across from his computer setup.

“Do they have any images of me?” Nicole asked in a cool calm voice. She thought that Fetter was panicking enough for the two of them.

“Not that I’ve been able to find out, but the police computer system isn’t the easiest to hack my way into.” Ferret complained. “They have a partial plate number, make and model, as well as colour.” He pointed out.

“I know that tone Ferret. What aren’t you telling me?” She asked.

“They think that you were working with the other guy, and he was shot by the officers before you shot them and then took the woman and boy with you as your hostages.” Ferret explained.

“Let them think what they want, we know the truth.” Nicole said with a less than bothered tone to her voice.

“Ice! They think you shot two police officers. You have the whole police force looking for you.” Ferret said with panic in his voice.

“They’ll soon find out the truth when they get forensics back, all I need to do is keep out their way until they do.”Nicole pointed out.

“They could have you on death row before they work all that out.” Ferret said still sounding worried.

“Do you think for one minute they would be taking me in alive if they caught me?” Nicole answered. She knew the police would shoot first and then make up the questions that suited the end result, later, if they bothered at all.

“Why don’t you just dump the two of them at the nearest police station and let them explain what happened? Walk away while you still can Ice.” Ferret pleaded. “What is it that has you going out on a limb for these two?” He asked

“I don’t want to talk about it Ferret, but this is personal. I just have to keep them both safe.” Nicole said with some pleading in her voice as she wished Ferret would just let the subject drop, but Ferret was a long way from being done just yet.

“Was this Nicolas Johnson some sort of a relative? You’ve never said anything about your past. I don’t even know what your real name was before you became Nicole Princess.” Ferret pushed for more info.

“Yes they are family; now let it drop before I do have to kill you.” Nicole growled into the phone. “Bring up the list of safe houses, and give me the location of the closest, so I can switch out cars and rest up for the night before moving on.” Nicole said as she made sure Ferret got the message that all other talks were done with.

Ferret soon had a list of places Nicole used as a form of safe house. Most of them were trailers located in trailer parks across the states. Nicole had cars and money there, she kept all her weapons in storage units which she kept up payments on through a shell company her and Ferret set up together.

“I’ll ditch this car and then buy something cheap to get us to the trailer where I can switch to the new car and then get as far away from here as we can.” Nicole laid out her plan.

“Where are you heading?” Ferret asked.

“The cabin. I think that’s far enough off the grid that not even the fed’s will track us down there.” Nicole said.

“I hope you know what you’re doing Ice.” Ferret said with a sigh.

“So do I Ferret, so do I.” Nicole replied. “I need to go now, but I’ll call you once I get to the safe house.” She added just before ending the call when she saw Samantha making her way back loaded down with bags.

Nicole walked back to the car and opened the trunk for Samantha to put the bags in there until they found a place for Samantha and Nicolas to bring Sara to the surface, and for Samantha to change the way she looks.

“Did you get everything you needed?” Nicole asked.

“Yes I did, but I also saw that mine and Nicolas’s pictures are all over the news.” Samantha pointed out what Nicole had already been told by Ferret.

“Yes, I just found that out.” Nicole said holding up the cell phone still in her hand. “They think that I’m working with the pizza guy, and that I’ve kidnapped the two of you.”

“How do you hope to get away then, with all the police looking for you and us?” Samantha asked.

“Let me worry about that, while you worry about making you and the kid look different.” Nicole said as she led Samantha around to the passenger door and helped her to get in before she got behind the wheel and drove away from the strip mall towards the area where the trailer park was located.

Nicole drove a ways up the road and came across a used car dealership that had some okay looking older cars being sold off cheap, so she pulled into a seven eleven just up the road and started to explain to Samantha what she needed her to do.

“I need you to make Nicolas look enough like a girl, so you can get him into the restroom and do a proper makeover.” Nicole explained.

“And what will you be doing while we do that?” Samantha asked.

“I’m going to take a walk up the road and buy us a new car. They will be looking for this one, and the last thing I need is to get stopped by the police.” Nicole explained.

Samantha got out and grabbed a couple of bits from the trunk, and then got in the back with Nicolas and set to work turning him into Sara enough to get the two of them to the restroom to finish off the look. While Nicole set off up the road to see what second hand car she could find.

Nicolas smiled as he watched his mother get in the back of the car with him and start to pull clothes out a bag and hand them over to him. He knew what he needed to do with the clothes and he set to work getting changed. Nicolas was soon in a training bra with a little padding to give him some shape, and then he slipped on a pink t-shirt with a hello kitty head on the front. His jeans looked enough like girls jeans to get away with until they got to the restroom and got him into the denim skirt and panties. Samantha had also bought some nail polish, makeup and jewellery to make him look even more like a girl than he ever has before. Samantha was going for an older look to really throw off anyone looking for a woman and her twelve year old son.

Samantha played around with Nicolas’s hair for a while and then deemed him girlie enough for the trip into the shop to use the restroom.

“You ready to do this Sara?” Samantha asked as she saw nothing but her daughter sat next to her grinning.

“I’ve been ready to do this since you first let me dress as Sara, mummy.” She smiled as she used her practiced female voice. “Nicolas has gone, I hope you know that?” Sara added.

“I’ve known that for some time sweetie, but I was hoping to do it in a more controlled environment than the back of a car and then a restroom though.” Samantha smiled. “I did some research into what you possibly were, and I was shocked to see the high number of suicides connected to people with your condition, and I just want my baby to be happy, given that as a boy or a girl.” Samantha added as she pulled Sara into a hug to let her new daughter know she still loved her.

“Let’s go and get me out of these icky boy’s jeans then mummy.” Sara whined like a typical teenage girl would. Samantha couldn’t help giggling as she got out the car and helped Sara get out before they made their way into the shop and through to the restroom at the back.

Samantha had rolled up the skirt and slipped the sandals and girl’s socks into the backpack she’d bought for Sara to use. Samantha wanted to put some money and other items in the bag, just in case they got split up and had to make a run for it on their own. She had even bought a couple of cheap pay as you go cell phones that weren’t to be used unless they got separated, but Samantha was going to explain all this to Sara later.

Sara didn’t get any second looks as she walked to the back of the seven eleven with her mother walking at her side. They entered the rest room and then Samantha locked the door so Sara could change out of the jeans, boy’s underwear, socks and trainers, so she could put on the girl’s panties, skirt, socks and sandals. Sara then painted her fingernails and blew on them to help get them dry, while Samantha applied some makeup to make Sara look older. By the time Samantha had done, Sara looked close to being sixteen more than a twelve year old. Sara looked in the mirror on the wall and smiled as she finally looked like a girl again, and she felt like she’d finally come home and let the world see the real her.

“Thank you mother.” Sara said feeling much older now and trying to act the part.

“Don’t go getting use to this look sweetie, you still have a lot of growing up to do before you become sixteen.” Samantha pointed out as she got all the things belonging to Nicolas packed up and put in the trash.

“I wish we could do something a little more symbolic than just throwing him in the trash, but I feel a new chapter starting in our lives.” Sara said as she placed the lid back on the bin and turned and left the rest room looking like a sixteen year old girl.

Part Four of Eleven

Chapter Four: Like father like son

Nicole pulled up just down the road from the seven eleven parking lot in a ford focus and then walked back to the other car to wait for Samantha and Sara’s return. She didn’t have to wait long before she saw two women walking towards the car, it took Nicole a couple of seconds to realise that it was Samantha and Nicolas, or Sara, as it was a young looking woman walking beside a brunette woman with thick rimmed glasses that made Samantha look like a school teacher, Samantha’s normal blonde hair hidden under the brunette wig.

“This car looks just like the other one you were driving.” Samantha said as she tried not to smile at the look on the mystery woman’s face calling herself Ice.

“The new car is parked just down the road. I need you and Sara to walk to it and then get in and follow me to a place where I can dispose of this car.” Nicole said as she handed Samantha the keys to the new car while she got her to look at a map, so anything caught on camera would just look like a woman asking directions.

Samantha and Sara walked off in the direction of the new car, while Nicole got in the old car and started it up then drove out the parking lot and headed down the road, parking up just down from the new car and waited for Samantha and Sara to get in it before they drove off out the city into the country.

Nicole found a spot she could transfer all the things from the trunk of the old car to the new car. She took the plates off the car and threw them on the back seat, and then she pulled a pin on a couple of canisters and then threw them into the old car before running to the new one and getting behind the wheel and driving away just before the old car went up in a ball of flames.

“What was in those cans?” Sara asked from the back of the car as she looked out the rear window and watched the car burning.

“They were thermite grenades. They won’t find anything useful by the time that’s done burning. They burn very hot, very fast.” Nicole explained.

The light was starting to fade, so Nicole had to remove the sunglasses to keep seeing the road, she wasn’t worried about Samantha and Sara seeing her eyes because she had coloured contacts in that made her eyes look a warm chocolate brown.

“Where are we heading, do you have any idea?” Samantha asked as she tried to get a better look at Ice’s eyes.

“We’re heading to a safe house of my own, well a safe trailer. I have a car there as well, so don’t get used to this one, it’s just a stop gap to keep the police off our trail, and hopefully the other bad guys as well.” Nicole explained as she turned and looked at Samantha, so she could get a proper look at her finally without the sunglasses one.

Samantha looked Nicole in the eyes and then looked over into the back where Sara was now sat smiling as she smoothed out her skirt and kept looking down at her chest and slowly working her way down her body until she reached her feet and then started taping them together. Samantha was shocked to see just how much Sara and Ice looked like each other, the only thing that made them look different was the ice blue eyes Sara had compared to Ice’s brown ones.

Nicole kept stealing looks at Sara in the rear view mirror, and she could see the same thing Samantha was looking at. Even though Nicole had had plastic surgery done to alter her looks, it had just made her look even more like Sara now she was dressed as a girl and looking older than her twelve years.

“Sara was telling me you’ve been helping her to become a girl, is she a happier child this way?” Nicole asked, hoping to throw Samantha’s thought process off its current path.

“Do I really need to answer that?” Samantha smiled as she looked at Sara again as she sat grinning back at her mother.

“Point taken.” Nicole said when she saw Sara smiling in the mirror. “She does look very natural as a girl.” Nicole added.

All talk stopped when they saw a patrol car drive past them going in the opposite direction. They all looked at it to see if it might turn around and come after them, but it just kept driving away from them, heading towards the place they had dumped the other car.

Nicole finally reached the trailer park and parked up in an empty spot close to the trailer she owned in the park. They emptied out the car and then Nicole drove it to a spot she knew it would soon be stolen from and stripped for parts, leaving no evidence for the police to find, all thanks to the local car thief’s. Samantha followed Nicole in an SUV that was parked in the driveway attached to the trailer. They left Sara at the trailer to sort something out for dinner.

Sara had unpacked some of the food they had bought and was busy fixing them all something to eat when Nicole and her mother got back, and Nicole had to admit it smelt good. They were soon all sat enjoying a home cooked meal. Samantha and Sara were happy to chat while they ate, but Nicole had gotten used to being on her own, so she was happy to let the two of them talk while she listened as she ate her own dinner.

“Thank you for the lovely meal Sara, you will make someone a wonderful wife one day.” Nicole said without thinking about whom it was she was talking to. Nicole had no idea how Sara felt about boys, and it wasn’t like she had much of a say in it either way.

“Thank you Miss Ice, but I’m too young to be thinking about things like that.” Sara blushed.

“Please call me Nicole. Ice is just my work name.” She smiled as she realised that she wanted them to call her by her chosen name, and not the name she used as the hired killer she’d become. “Nicole Princess is my full name.” Nicole added.

“So your work name is Ice Princess?” Sara asked when she put the two of them together. “How did you get a name like that?”

Nicole was just about to say it was because of the colour of her eyes, but managed to stop herself just before she let the cat out of the bag. It would open a can of worms she didn’t want opened, due to her having brown contacts in at the minute. Nicole also knew that Samantha would know who she was if she saw Nicole’s real eye colour. Nicole kept seeing the same eyes every time she looked at Sara.

“The person that trained me said I was cold and heartless like an ice princess.” Nicole said as an answer to Sara’s question.

“How did you become a killer?” Samantha asked.

“It was a case of kill or be killed, so I did the killing and things kind of snowballed from there.” Nicole said trying to keep it vague.

Samantha could see that there was more of a story there, but Nicole wasn’t willing to share it with them. Part of Samantha was glad Nicole wasn’t willing to share; she didn’t want Sara hearing stories of how Nicole became an assassin, and could act so calmly about taking another person’s life. Samantha had seen far too much death in her life, starting with the death of Jason Ackles, but he deserved to die, as he was trying to kill Nicolas and her after he found the two of them had made love. The only good thing to come out of all that was Sara, and Samantha was willing to do anything to keep her daughter alive.

“I’ll let you and Sara take the bedroom, I’ll take the couch.” Nicole said as she got to her feet and went to sort out some things to change into before settling down for the night. “I’ll let you and Sara get ready for bed first.” Nicole added.

Samantha and Sara were soon ready for bed and went into the bedroom to get some sleep, both of them feeling more relaxed knowing that Nicole was keeping an eye on them. Neither knew the reason for this woman wanting to protect them, but both knew she would with her own life.

Nicole waited for the two of them to go to bed, so she could remove the contacts without the risk of Samantha or Sara seeing her without them in. The last thing Nicole needed was for Samantha to work out who she really was. Nicole let out a sigh of relief when she finally got the contacts out and placed them back in a little tub with some fluid to help keep them clean. She was soon showered and dressed in sweat pants and t-shirt, ready for any trouble that might come through the night. Nicole didn’t want to be caught in a night gown if they got attacked through the night.

Samantha was stood right outside the bathroom when Nicole stepped out. Nicole was lost in thought and didn’t notice her until it was too late and she bumped right into her. Samantha was shocked to see that Nicole’s real hair colour was black just like Sara’s. Nicole had been wearing a wig since she saved their lives, so this was the first time Samantha had seen the real Nicole.

Nicole pulled a knife from some place and had it held to Samantha’s throat in a split second, she quickly pulled it away again when she realised who it was. “Sorry about that. I’m not use to having company.” Nicole said as she slipped the knife back in its hiding place.

Samantha had let out a scream which soon brought Sara running out the bedroom to see what was going on. She got out just in time to see Nicole putting the knife away again. “What’s wrong?” Sara asked as she looked around for the reason her mother just screamed.

“Are we safe being here with you?” Samantha snapped as she watched Nicole putting the knife away again. “I’d feel much be...” Was all Samantha got out before she finally made eye contact with Nicole and stopped dead in her tracks as she looked into Nicole’s icy blue eyes, just like the ones Sara had.

“Your eyes, they look just like mine, and your hair colour is black like mine as well.” Sara said with a shocked look on her face. “Who are you?” Sara asked with some pleading in her voice.

Samantha was still trying to get things straight in her own mind as she looked at this woman that could be a sister to Sara’s father, Nicolas, but she already knew that he never had any other family, only his father, and he’d drank himself to death ten years ago, so who was this woman.

“No, it can’t be,” Samantha said as she stepped back looking shocked while she took in the form of the woman stood before her. “You died a boy over ten years ago.” Samantha added as she saw there was no doubt that Nicole was a woman. The tight t-shirt and figure hugging sweat pants left no doubt in Samantha’s mind that this woman was all woman.

“What are you talking about mum?” Sara asked as she looked at her mother and Nicole just stood looking at each other. “Who do you think she is?”

“She’s your father.” Samantha stuttered out as she had to look behind her as she stepped back and had to hold onto the counter top to stop herself from falling over.

“No I’m not kid.” Nicole said in a cold voice. “He died like your mother told you. I’m Nicole now, the ice princess. Hired gun and assassin.” Nicole added as she slipped between the two of them and carried on through to where the couch was, like nothing had happened.

Nicole felt far from calm, but she had learned over the years to hide all her feeling while carrying out a job. She was hoping both Samantha and Sara would be angry with what they just found out, and go to bed, but they both followed Nicole instead. They wanted to know what had happened and why the boy Samantha knew in school and in her bed, was now a female assassin.

“You can’t drop something like that on us, and then just wander off to bed.” Samantha said in a harsh tone as she led Sara by the hand into the living area and sat on another part of the couch looking at Nicole for an answer to all the question she had rolling around in her head.

“There is nothing to talk about Samantha. Nicolas Johnson died just over ten years ago, and until this trouble kicked off, I had no idea you even had a child, or where you were living.” Nicole explained.

“You have a daughter Nicole; doesn’t that mean anything to you?” Samantha asked, shocked at just how heartless Nicole was being about it all, but the more Samantha thought about it, the more she realised that Nicole had known all this time since saving them, and hadn’t let on who she really was.

“If that’s how you feel, then why did you save us in the first place?” Samantha snapped angrily.

“I’m beginning to ask myself that same question.” Nicole lied, but felt bad the minute the words left her lips. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that.” She added with a sigh as she saw the hurt look on both Samantha and Sara’s faces.

“Would you have got in touch with us if you had known about me sooner?” Sara asked with tears in her eyes.

“No, I still would have kept away, but maybe kept an eye on you from afar.” Nicole owned up.

“Did you always feel like a girl yourself Nicole?” Sara asked as she realised her father could still offer some help in her own transition. “Are you all girl now?” Sara added with some excitement in her voice. This was the first person she’d met that was anything like her.

“Sara! You can’t ask questions like that.” Samantha blushed. “I’m sorry about that Nicole.” She added as she looked at Nicole who didn’t look bothered by the questions Sara just asked.

“That’s alright Sammi.” Nicole said as she waved off Samantha’s worries. “She has a right to ask me any question she wants after me not being part of her life for the past twelve years.” Nicole added.

Samantha smiled at the use of her old nickname. She’d not heard anyone call her by that name since Nicolas died. “You better start answering her then.” Samantha pushed for Nicole to fill in some of the blanks as to what had happened to her since Nicolas went on the run and then falsely turned up dead just over two years later.

“Yes, I am all woman now, but I never realised I was different until I was on the run.” Nicole started to explain. “I always felt different growing up, but I never understood what it was until I was disguised as a woman so the police wouldn’t find me that I realised what it was.”

“That’s how I felt.” Sara grinned. “How did you become the woman you are now?” Sara asked.

“I did things a little different to how you’ll be doing things.” Nicole pointed out. “Everything I had done was kept a secret from the world. You will be able to do it all properly with your mother’s help.” Nicole explained.

“I’ll have you as well.” Sara pointed out the flaw in Nicole’s statement.

“I’m sorry, but once I have you both safe, and the threat on you both has been removed, I’ll be gone from your life again.” Nicole said looking serious. “The two of you would always be in danger if I stayed around, or the wrong people found out what the two of you were to me.” Nicole tried to explain to the now sad looking girl sat facing her.

“Can’t we all go on the run and be together?” Sara asked, not wanting to lose her father, even if he was now a she. “You’re the only one that truly understands how I feel.” Sara pleaded.

“The life I lead is no future for the two of you, and it would be too hard for me to keep doing my job with the two of you to protect as well.” Nicole said as she shut down Sara’s argument for them all to remain together and go on the run.

“Don’t you think that should be a choice for me and my mother to make?” Sara snapped.

“Nicole is right sweetie.” Samantha said. “She can’t live her life worrying about keeping us safe, she would make a mistake and get us all killed, so this is the way it has to be.” Samantha added in agreement with what Nicole had already said.

Sara growled at them both as she got up and stormed off to the bedroom, slamming the door as she went in. They could both hear Sara sobbing from where they were still sat on the couch looking at each other and then to the bedroom door.

“I’m sorry for all the trouble I brought into your life Sammi.” Nicole said as she let her head drop into her hands.

“Sara and I would be dead if you hadn’t come back into our lives, so please don’t be sorry about any of it.” Samantha said as she moved over to the couch she was sat on. “I just wish we could have met under different conditions.” She added with a sigh.

“You have no idea how many times I came close to looking you up, but I knew it would be a death sentence for us both if people found out who I was, and what I’d done since I went on the run all those years ago.” Nicole said as she looked Samantha in the eyes.

“What stopped you really?” Samantha asked when she saw that Nicole wasn’t telling her the whole truth.

“Even though I’m a woman now myself, I’ve never stopped loving you Sammi, but what could I offer you know I look like this?” Nicole said as she looked at her female form.

“I can’t say I feel the same way about you as I did about Nicolas, but I could see you as a sister and an Aunty to Sara. I’m glad you didn’t die, and look to be thriving in your new carrier.” Samantha added as she cuddled up to Nicole.

Samantha wanted to give Sara some time to calm down before she went to bed, so she rested her head on Nicole’s shoulder and asked Nicole to tell her what happened after she ran away, and what led her to becoming a female assassin.

Nicole found it strange to be sat cuddled up to Samantha again after all these years, but it felt nice to be talking to someone about her past as well. Nicole was soon filling Samantha in on all the details of how a wimpy little boy became a female assassin. Nicole left out the details of all the people she’d killed. Samantha didn’t need to know about any of that.

Samantha finally thought it was safe to go to bed and she said goodnight to Nicole and then left her to play the role of protector while her and Sara got some sleep. Sara was curled up on the bed asleep when Samantha entered the bedroom, so Samantha got on the bed next to her and pulled up the covers and was soon having a fitful sleep with an arm wrapped around her daughter.

Nicole loaded a couple of her guns ready for use and also made sure she had some knifes spread around the place as a backup, not that she was expecting any trouble while they stopped at the trailer, but Nicole never knew what would happen. With every aspect covered, Nicole settled down on the couch and got some sleep before they moved on tomorrow and made the final trip to the cabin, where Nicole knew they would be safe, as the cabin was totally off the grid.

Sara had woken and took a shower before her mother woke and wanted to take one. She wandered out into the main part of the trailer and saw Nicole sleeping on the couch with a gun sat beside her, so she sneaked over and went to pick it up, but was stopped when she found another gun being pressed up against her nose.

“I don’t think your mother would be happy if I started letting you play around with my weapons.” Nicole said as she sat up and removed the pistol again and placed it on the table with the other one Sara was about to pick up. “Are you going to speak to me today, or are you still angry with me over my decision to leave again once I know the two of you are safe.” Nicole asked.

“I’m still a little upset, but I don’t want to waste any of the time we have together, by not talking to you.” Sara said looking nervous as she watched Nicole put the guns down out the way. “Do you ever regret becoming Nicole?” Sara asked.

“I can’t say I do, I still pretend to be a boy every now and then, and I hate the feel of the clothes and the way I look.” Nicole said as she screwed up her nose and made Sara giggle.

“I know what you mean. I felt the same way when I was going to school as a boy these past two years. All I wanted to do is get home so I could become Sara again.”

“Did your friends not notice anything?” Nicole asked.

“I didn’t have any friends to speak of, I didn’t like doing boy things, and the girls wouldn’t let me do things with them. I just went to classes and then returned home so I could become Sara and then sort out dinner ready for when mother got home.” Sara said with pride.

“Your mother did a wonderful job of raising you, I’m very proud of you, and I will do all I can to help you become the girl you want to become. I’m just sorry that I never got to see you grow up, if I’d known about you sooner, I might have done something’s different in my life.” Nicole said with a thoughtful look as she tried to think of some way she might have been able to live a normal life with Samantha and Sara, but would she have been able to do it as a man, or would she still have gone down the path of becoming a woman herself. These were all things she would never know the answer to. She still would have been tied to the murder of Jason Ackles, and probably spent some time on death row before being put to death.

“Mother works hard to keep a roof over our heads, or she did, so the least I can do is make sure we eat proper meals.” Sara said with pride for her mother. “I’m sorry for the way I acted last night Nicole, and thank you for saving us.” Sara smiled as she sat down next to Nicole.

“I better let you go and get washed and dressed then, so you can carry on looking after your mother then.” Nicole said as she let Sara go and take a shower before Samantha got up.

Sara was soon skipping off into the bathroom to take a shower so she could get dressed. Sara was actually looking forward to getting dressed now she was wearing girl’s clothes all the time. She wasn’t happy about seeing her naked body due to it being the body of a boy still, but after seeing how her father looked now, Sara had hope that she too would look as good as Nicole did. Sara hated the thing between her legs and treated it like it was a poisonous snake when she did have to wash, but she was soon done in the shower and returning to the bedroom to get dressed.

Samantha was just waking when she saw Sara enter the room with a towel wrapped around her chest, just like all women did, even though she had nothing to cover up.

“Good morning sweetie. How you feeling this morning?” Samantha asked as she sat up and smiled at Sara.

“I’m feeling much better than I did last night mother. I’m sorry about acting up last night, and I’ve already apologised to Nicole.” Sara said as she sat on the edge of the bed and gave her mother a good morning hug.

“I’m pleased to hear that honey, and I hope you will make the most of the time we have with Nicole before she has to leave us again.” Samantha said with some sadness in her voice. “I may not like the fact Nicole will leave us again one day, but I can also understand her reason for leaving.” Samantha added with a sigh as she hugged her daughter.

“I better get dressed, so I can get some breakfast sorted out while you go and take a shower.” Sara said as she got up and started putting her outfit together for the day.

“I’ll be a little longer in the bathroom, because I need to colour my hair, so Nicole can cut and style it.” Samantha said with some dread in her voice. “I’m not sure just how good she is at cutting and styling hair, but I hope she’s as good with a pair of scissors as she is with a knife and a gun.” Sara added.

“I’m sure Nicole is as good a stylist as she is an assassin.” Sara said just before she started giggling at her own comment. “That’s something I never thought I’d be saying.” Sara added with a shake of her head at just how crazy their life had become.

Samantha was soon in the bathroom dying her hair from its normal blonde to a chestnut brown. Samantha let out a sigh as she looked in the mirror once she was finished and she now had brown hair, and feeling like everything in her life had been turned upside down. The most amazing part of it all being the woman waiting to restyle her hair that was once the boy she made love to and helped to create such an amazing child that she loved more than life itself.

Nicole was stood on a large sheet of plastic that was laid out on the floor with her hands resting on the back of a chair. Samantha looked nervous as she made her way over and saw Nicole smiling at her as she lifted the pair of scissors in her hand, Samantha found herself wondering how many times Nicole might have killed someone in this very same way, while pretending to be a hair stylist. She had a vision of Nicole plunging the scissors into a person’s neck and then stepping back and smiling like she was now, as the person bled to death on the plastic sheeting laid out on the floor.

“Don’t look so worried Sammi; I trained with some of the best stylists around.” Nicole said as she helped Samantha take the seat.

“I trust you, but the plastic lay out on the floor, and you holding those scissors like that, kind of make me a little nervous.” Samantha tried to say with a smile, but it didn’t mask the fear in her eyes.

“I know what I’ve become scares you Sammi, but you still mean more to me than anything, and I wouldn’t be trying so hard to keep you alive if I didn’t.” Nicole said as she stepped around to face Samantha who was now sat in the seat. “And I’d never do something as cheesy as this if I did plan to kill you.” Nicole added, which kind of killed the moment for Samantha.

“Don’t you ever feel anything after you’ve taken a life?” Samantha asked with pain in her voice for the lost boy that she didn’t see in the eyes of the woman before her.

“I kill people for money Sammi. There is no place for emotions in my line of work.” Nicole said in a cold hard voice. “Now let me style your hair into something that alters the shape of your face.” Nicole said as she walked around Samantha looking at what she had to work with.

Samantha was soon sporting a much shorter looking hairstyle that changed the look of her face totally. Once the hair was done, Nicole spent some time showing her how to alter the way she put her makeup on, so she looked like a different person all together.

“Now you both look different, we can see about moving on once we’ve had something to eat and got some things we need from a local storage unit.” Nicole explained as she watched Sara and Samantha looking at their new looks.

Sara just looked like her female self, which was very different to the boy Nicole had first seen when saving them from pizza guy. With Samantha’s new look, they didn’t look anything like mother and daughter now either, but Nicole and Sara did when Nicole wasn’t wearing a disguise, not that Nicole ever left the safety of her home, hotel, or place she was stopping while working on a job without wearing a disguise of some sort.

“You look so different mum.” Sara said as she looked at her mother and reached out to touch the new pixie style hair she had. Sara thought her mother looked like Alice Cullen from the twilight movies.

“If what Nicole says is true, then that is a good thing, and it will mean we can move around more freely without the risk of being spotted and put in danger.” Samantha explained.

“We still need to keep a low profile and get you two to a place where no one will be looking for you. A place that’s off the grid.” Nicole said while they sat eating.

“What do you mean by off the grin?” Samantha asked with a puzzled look.

“Away from ATM’s, street cameras and any form of computer identification.” Nicole explained. “That’s how the police and the bad guys will track you down.” Nicole added.

“How can you be sure?” Samantha asked.

“Because that’s how I’d track you down if it was me looking for you.” Nicole informed them.

Samantha and Sara sat wondering for a short time as they sat in peace and quiet and ate their breakfast, just how many people had done this same thing, just to be caught and killed by Nicole.

“Do you know of a place we can get off the grid as you put it?” Samantha asked.

“Yes, I know of a place where you should be safe.” Nicole said as she thought about the cabin where Max first took Nicolas all those years ago. It was now her place, left to her by Max when he died of Cancer five years ago. He left her everything he owned when he died. Nicole was the only person at the funeral, as he’d not got any other family, and had come to think of Nicole as a daughter, even after knowing her as a desperate boy on the run from the law.

Max had taught her everything except how to deal with an ex girlfriend and a son she never knew she had, who now wanted to be a girl, just like his father. Nicole had money stashed away in a Caymans bank account, some was what she’d earned on jobs, and some that was left to her by Max, but she planned to help all she could to make sure Sara got her wish, and both of them lived to see a bright long future.

They packed up the car and were soon back on the road heading for a place Nicole knew to be safe, but Samantha and Sara were in the dark about it until they got there, and that was going to be a couple of days before they got there.

Part Five of Eleven

Chapter Five: Being a parent

Nicole had been driving for around four hours before she pulled into a diner at the side of the road and stopped for something to eat and to also stretch their legs for an hour. Samantha offered to drive when they got back on the road, but Nicole said she wanted to be the one driving, as she didn’t want either her or Sara to know the location they were heading for.

“Why is this place your taking us such a big secret?” Samantha asked.

“It’s not that I don’t trust you Sammi, but the less the two of you know, the better it is for me to protect you both.” Nicole explained her reason

“Protect us from what?” Sara asked sounding frustrated about the way Nicole was treating her and her mother.

“If one of you gets caught, I can still get the other one to safety without the bad guys being able to find out where I’ve taken you.” Nicole snapped. “Now do you want to eat, or do we just keep driving?” Nicole asked as she looked first at Samantha and then Sara in the back seat.

“Let’s just go and get something to eat, and stretch our legs.” Samantha said as she saw that Nicole and Sara were set to have another go at each other. Samantha knew it was all because they had been cooped up in the car for the last four hours, and she hoped they would all feel better after a break.

They got out the car and made their way into the diner and found an empty table away from the other people eating in the place, and close to the exit in case of trouble. Nicole ordered food for all three of them when a waitress came over. They were soon enjoying burgers and fries.

Sara got up from the table as soon as she finished eating. “Where are you going?” Samantha asked.

“I’m going to check out the shop and the arcade.” Sara almost snarled as she looked at Nicole angrily just before she walked away.

“I get the impression she’s a little upset with me about something.” Nicole said as they watched Sara walking away.

“I know she looks like a sixteen year old, but she’s still only twelve under all that makeup and padding.” Samantha reminded Nicole. “She’s just upset about you leaving again after only just finding you were alive, and just like her.” Samantha added.

“I hope one day she will understand that I’m leaving to save her life, as I will be yours.” Nicole sighed.

“Is there no way you can give up this life and stay with us once we’re safe?” Samantha asked with some hope in her voice.

“I can’t see any way of making that happen Sammi. I live off the grid, so I can do my job to the best of my ability.” Nicole tried to explain.

“Then let Sara and I live off the grid with you.” Samantha suggested.

“No! I want Sara to live a fun filled life of a teenage girl and then have a life like all the other teenage girls out there.” Nicole said in an angry sounding whisper.

“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to make you angry.” Samantha said.

“What sort of a future would we have as a family? It would be a house full of women, and I don’t have feelings for you in that way anymore, I don’t have feelings of any sort.” Nicole said as she looked out the window to let Samantha know the conversation was over.

“How do you hope to convince me of that Nikki, if you can’t even sound convincing to yourself?” Samantha said as she got up and went to use the restroom before they got back on the road.

Nicole sat gritting her teeth as she looked out the window while she clenched her fists until she felt her nails break the skin. She knew Samantha was right, and she did have feeling for both Sara and Samantha still, but more as a sister in Samantha’s case.

“Now I know why Max warned me about never contacting anyone from my past.” Nicole said to herself as she got up from the table and went to see if Sara was keeping out of trouble but first she went out to the car and grabbed one of the burner phones out the trunk and placed a call to Ferret.

“What you got to tell me Ferret?” Nicole asked when she heard him answer the phone on his end.

“Hi ice. No one is on your trail yet, not that I expect them to be if I know you.” Ferret replied smugly.

“That doesn’t mean we get sloppy and ease up. Keep checking all the police report, and let me know about anything that looks out of place.” Nicole warned.

“Are you expecting trouble?” Ferret asked.

“I always expect trouble, and this man hunt will only bring more fixers out of the woodwork.” Nicole growled at the mess keeping Samantha and Sara alive, was turning into.

“I don’t have all the information ice, but I think you should just walk away from this one.” Ferret said sounding worried.

“I can’t do that Ferret. I’ll call you again in four hours to make sure you don’t have any more news for me.” Nicole said just before she ended the call and then took the back off the phone and removed the battery and sim card before she snapped the sim card in half and then dropped everything into a small stream that ran by the side of the diner before she made her way back inside to find Sara and Samantha.

Sara had looked in the arcade and didn’t like any of the video games they had in there so she wandered into the shop to see what magazines they had. She thought it would help pass the time if she had something to read while on the road.

“Do you actually like reading them magazines?” A male voice asked.

Sara looked to her side where she heard the voice, and she smiled when she saw a teenage boy that looked to be about sixteen, the same age Sara was pretending to be. “Some of the articles can be interesting, and it’s better than looking out the window or engaging the grownups in conversation.” Sara said with a roll of her eyes.

“You make a good point.” The boy smiled. “Maybe I should buy a copy then.” He added with a nervous chuckle.

Sara just giggled as she realised that the boy was flirting with her. She’d never had a boy flirt with her before, not even when she was dressed and out with her mother shopping, but she’d never been dressed up looking like a sixteen year old before either. “I’m not sure this would be a good magazine for you though, not unless you like reading about makeup and nail polish.” Sara pointed out as she showed the boy what she was reading, and the fact it was a teen girl magazine. “Cars and sport are at the other end of the shelf.” Sara added as she pointed to the other end of the isle.

“Do you want to go grab a drink with me?” The boy asked with a smile as he relaxed and got a little more adventurous and bold in his actions.

Sara not being used to acting like a sixteen year old girl, found herself acting a little to flirty and leading the boy on, so he stepped in a little too close to Sara just as Nicole entered the shop and saw what was going on.

“Come on Sara, we’re leaving, NOW!” Nicole snapped as she grabbed Sara’s arm and pulled her from the shop.

Sara tried to pull away, but couldn’t make Nicole let go until they were out at the car, where Nicole almost threw Sara into the back seat just before she slammed the door and got behind the wheel. Samantha had seen Nicole dragging Sara from the shop and out to the car, she ran over to the car and got in the front passenger seat and waited for Nicole to drive out the diner’s parking lot before she looked at Nicole.

“What the hell was all that about? I’ve never had to treat Sara like that, and I don’t expect you to treat her like that.” Samantha snapped at Nicole, much to Sara’s delight from the back seat.

“You’ve never let her dress like a sixteen year old girl before, or I hope you haven’t, and for your information, I just caught her flirting with a sixteen year old boy.” Nicole snapped back.

“Is this true Sara?” Samantha asked as she turned her anger on Sara now.

“We were just talking mum, and then the Nazi turned up and dragged me away.” Sara snapped back angrily as she starred daggers at the back of Nicole’s head.

“Nicole did the same thing I would have done under the circumstances Sara.” Samantha snapped. “You may look sixteen dressed like you are at the minute, but that still doesn’t alter the fact that you are only twelve and to young to be looking at boys.” Samantha added.

“That still doesn’t mean she can walk back into my life and treat me like her daughter.” Sara whined when she saw that even her mother thought it was a bad idea for her to go flirting with a boy.

“I told you to keep a low profile. If you can’t do that, then we need to change the way she looks, maybe a younger geekier look.” Nicole said in response to the Nazi comment.

“NO! Please don’t do that.” Sara said with some pleading in her voice.

“How did you know that boy wasn’t working with someone that wanted your mother dead, and they were going to use you to get to her?” Nicole asked.

“He just looked like a sixteen year old boy.” Sara whined some more.

“Yes and the guy yesterday just looked like a pizza delivery man until he blew two police officers brains out.” Nicole reminded Sara. “I can only keep the two of you save if you listen to what I tell you and then do it.” Nicole added as her final word on the subject.

Samantha scowled at Sara in a way that let Sara know she was on thin ice with her and Nicole. Sara sunk down in the seat and looked out the window trying to be invisible as she put in the headphones for her mp3 player and listened to some music.

It was an hour before any of them spoke again, and it was Sara that finally calmed down enough to realise that Nicole had been right, and she didn’t have any idea just who that boy was, and he could have been working with someone else.

“Nicole?” Sara said as she sat forward in the seat and looked at Nicole driving the car.

“What?” Nicole answered with an edge of anger to her voice as she looked at Sara in the rear view mirror.

“I’m sorry about what I said earlier, and I understand that I owe you my life, but that was the first time anyone noticed me, and I got a little over excited about it.” Sara tried to explain

Nicole looked over her shoulder at Sara to see if she was trying some trick, but all she saw was a sorry looking Sara pouting at her. “So you don’t think me a Nazi then?” Nicole asked with a raised eyebrow.

“No I don’t Nicole, and I’m sorry I called you that. Please say you forgive me.” Sara begged. “I won’t go against your orders again.” Sara added.

“Okay then, apology excepted, and I’ll try to be a little more understanding the next time I see you flirting with a boy.” Nicole agreed.

“There won’t be a next time, not if she doesn’t want to find herself dressed as a boy again.” Samantha warned.

Nicole kept out of the rest of the argument between Samantha and Sara, not that there was much more said after Samantha’s warning. Nicole did have to smile at how quick the two of them were chatting again though, like nothing had happened, and even Nicole joined in as Sara started asking her questions about her transition.

“Did it take long for you to become Nicole?” Sara asked.

“Two years from start to finish with the surgery, but the hormones are still doing their thing with making my skin softer and flooding my body with oestrogen.” Nicole explained.

     “Was it painful?” Sara asked.

“Yes it was, and the dilation on a daily basis is not a nice thing to do either.” Nicole shuddered at the thought of doing that.

“I don’t think we need to talk about this sort of thing just yet Nikki.” Samantha frowned.

“She needs to know what she’s letting herself in for if this is really what she wants to do with her life.”Nicole said in her own defence.

“I don’t mind mum, this is all stuff I need to know.” Sara said as she placed a hand on Samantha’s shoulder.

Samantha indicated for Nicole to carry on, and she did, filling in some of the blanks in her past and also letting the two of them know what sort of things Sara would be going through at some point in the future.

Nicole did more talking that afternoon than she’d done in the past thirteen years, but she enjoyed sharing part of her story with the two of them, and she couldn’t help feeling some pride for the child she’d help bring into the world. Nicole found a motel to stop at for the night and they were soon in a room after Nicole went in and got them one. Nicole didn’t want the receptionist to see Samantha or Sara, just in case they were more perceptive and put two and two together if they saw the news.

“I’ll pop out and find us something to eat while you to get cleaned up.” Nicole said just before she left the room and got in the car, glad to be away from them for a short time so she could work out the next stage of their trip without all the questions from Sara and Samantha.

Sara was sleeping on one of the beds when Nicole got back with the food, while Samantha sat on the bed next to her watching Sara sleep.

“I hope you didn’t get anything hot?” Samantha asked. “I thought she could use a nap.” Samantha added as she looked down lovingly at Sara as she slept next to her.

“Sara told me about all the junk food the police had you both eating while at their safe house, so I got us all chicken salads and some fresh bread.” Nicole smiled when she saw the pleased look on Samantha’s face.

“Thank you Nikki, if I never see another pizza again, it will be too soon.” Samantha groaned.

“Shall we eat then, so you can enjoy some more healthy food?” Nicole asked as she walked over to the table in the room and started taking tubs out the bags she was carrying.

Samantha placed Sara’s salad in the small fridge they had in the room to keep it fresh until she woke, and then she took a seat at the table and started eating hers.

Sara slept for a couple of hours and then enjoyed the food Nicole had bought for them. Nicole took a shower and was just drying herself off when Sara burst into the bathroom trying to make out she needed the toilet, but Nicole couldn’t help noticing the way she was checking out her body. Nicole had made no effort to cover up her naked body as she rubbed in some lotion to help keep her skin smooth and soft.

“You look just like mother.” Sara said, not able to look away from Nicole’s perfect looking body. “Will I look like that one day?” Sara asked, but the look in her eyes made it look more like she was pleading with Nicole to help her fulfil her dream.

“You will look even more beautiful than me Sara, due to you realising at a much younger age what you want to be.” Nicole said as she slipped on her bathrobe and then led Sara back out the bathroom.

“I’m sorry Nikki, I tried to stop her coming in, but she’s a force of nature at times.” Samantha frowned as she looked at Sara.

“Don’t worry about it. I’ve noticed she’d been looking at me and trying to work out just how far I’d gone down this road, and now she knows.” Nicole shrugged like it was no big deal. “You can’t remain modest in my line of work.” She added as she walked over pulled out a t-shirt and sweat pants to slip on, once she had her underwear on.

“Why do you always sleep in those? Don’t you ever just want to wear a nice nightgown?” Sara asked.

“Yes, but it’s not very helpful when fighting other fixers, where as this is easy to move around in, and doesn’t look out of place if I have to make a run for it.” Nicole explained.

“But I thought you said we were safe here with you?” Sara asked looking puzzled. “And why do you call yourself a fixer? It’s not like you actually fix anything.” Sara added looking more puzzled.

“I fix other people’s problems.” Nicole pointed out.

“You kill people!” Sara shouted. “How can you say it so naturally?” Sara asked as she suddenly realised what Nicola actually was.

“Because it is natural for me to do this.” Nicole snarled at Sara. “And unless you’ve forgotten, the only reason you’re still breathing now is because of what I am.” Nicola added as she pushed Sara down onto the bed before she walked over to the door and left the motel room, worried she might do something she’d regret if she stopped in the room.

Nicole was leaning against the wall next to the door to their room with her eyes shut as she counted to a hundred trying to calm herself down, when Samantha stepped out to see how she was doing.

“I’m sorry about Sara, but she has had a lot of changes to deal with in the last twenty four hours.” Samantha said as she stood next to Nicole and leaned against the wall and looked over at her.

“I can’t undo what I’ve become, and at the minute, you both need me to be who I am, or you will both die.” Nicole said as she laid out the cold hard facts for Samantha to understand. “I’m sorry if I’m a major disappointment to you and Sara, but this is just who I am.” Nicole added with a sigh.

“Just give her some time to come to grips with what’s happened and the fact she’s found out her father is still alive, and just like she is.” Samantha said as she tried to smooth things over between Sara and Nicole.

“That’s just it Sammi. I won’t be around long enough for her to get over anything.” Nicole said as she pushed away from the wall and turned to look Samantha in the eyes. “Sara’s reaction in there just now is the very reason I need to leave once I’ve made sure the two of you are safe.” Nicole added.

“Please don’t do that Nikki, just give her a little time to get use to you being in her life.” Samantha pleaded. “You’ve had thirteen years to come to terms with what you are, but you expect Sara to be alright with it after a day?”

“I thought you’d have just moved on and found someone to settle down with, I had no idea that you had my child and never settled down with anyone.” Nicole argued her reason for keeping out of her life.

“Not many guys out there are interested in a young woman with a child, so I spent all my time doing classes and getting a better education. Not that any of that matters now.” Samantha said as she threw her hands in the air to indicate just how much everything had changed, just because she wanted to do the right thing.

“I’m sorry Sammi; I had no idea how hard you had it.” Nicole said as she placed a hand on Samantha’s shoulder. Not being used to showing real signs of affection made it hard for Nicole to interact with her. Max had taught Nicole to close out all emotion, so this was all very new territory, and she didn’t like it.

“Did you ever try to look for me, and see what I was doing over the years?” Samantha asked with a hopeful look on her face, she was hoping that Nicole would say yes, but already knew the answer wasn’t going to be the one she wanted to hear.

“I had no idea if the police were watching you in the beginning, and then I found out I was transgendered and I thought you’d never understand any of it, so I just closed the door on that part of my life until the other day when I saw your name show up on a website I go to, looking for work.” Nicole explained.

“I’m glad you didn’t die, and that you were able to come to our rescue, but I still wish you could find some way to remain in mine and Sara’s lives when all this is over.”

“I don’t think Sara will ever accept me as part of her life, not now she knows what I am.” Nicole frowned.

“You’re part of her family; she has just been through a lot these past couple of days.” Samantha argued.

“I’m just a killer to her Sammi, and she will never see me as anything else.” Nicole said it like her mind was still made up, and once the two of them were safe, she would be gone from their lives again.

“Do you really think that we will just be able to carry on with our lives knowing that you’re out there some place carrying on with yours?” Samantha asked in an angry whisper.

“I’m not giving you a choice. Once this is over I will be gone, and I don’t want you looking for me.” Nicole warned.

“Why not? You’ll kill us?” Samantha asked angrily.

“NO! But others may, if they think they can get to me through you.” Nicole replied looking hurt at her comment.

“All the more reason to stick around and keep us safe.” Samantha bargained.

“This is just going around in circles Sammi.” Nicole growled as she walked back into the room after taking a look around to make sure nothing looked out of place.

Samantha stood and watched Nicole enter the motel room, and then she entered the room again after letting out a sigh of frustration.

Sara was still lying on the bed, but she was curled up in a ball sobbing her eyes out. Nicole looked at her before she walked into the bathroom to finish getting sorted out ready for them all getting some rest before they set off again the next morning.

Samantha sat on the bed and pulled Sara close as she tried to console her. “I’m sorry mummy, I’m so sorry, but I just don’t want to see her leave again.” Sara said between sobs.

“I know sweetie, but Nikki doesn’t know you like I do, and she thinks you can’t accept her because of what she does for a living.” Samantha said as she rocked Sara in her arms.

“I’m scared mummy, I don’t want to die.” Sara admitted just how scared she was.

“I promise you that will not happen for a long time.” Nicole said from the doorway to the bathroom. “I will keep you both alive.” Nicole added as she walked over to the bed and sat down on the empty spot on the other side to Samantha, which put Sara in the middle of them both.

Nicole looked worried when she was suddenly being hugged by a sobbing Sara. “I’m sorry about what I said Nicole, I’m glad you came to our rescue.” Sara said as she hugged Nicole even tighter.

Nicole’s hands hovered just short of giving Sara a hug back for a couple of seconds, and then she finally gave up and hugged Sara back. “I know you are Sara, and I’ll do all I can to keep you safe.” Nicole said, but still not agreeing to hang around once they were safe, not that Nicole would know when that would be.

“Let’s get you ready for bed now.” Samantha said as she finally pulled Sara away from Nicole and then led her over to the bathroom with their toiletry bag.

They were soon ready for bed and Nicole dragged a chair over to the motel room door and then got comfy while Samantha and Sara took one of the two beds in the room. Both of them sleeping better knowing that Nicole was ready to protect them should anything happen.

Part Six of Eleven

Chapter Six: Don’t speak to strangers

They were on the road early the next morning and had covered some distance before Nicole stopped for breakfast. Nicole made Samantha and Sara wait in the car while she checked the diner out and made sure everything looked okay before she went back to fetch them.

“Why do you keep looking Nicole? Wouldn’t we have seen something by now if they were still following us?” Sara asked.

“It’s better safe than sorry.” Nicole replied. “The odds actually increase on someone finding us the longer we’re out on the road.” She explained.

“But mum and I look totally different now.” Sara argued.

“That still doesn’t mean they won’t find out who the two of you are.” Nicole tried to explain, but she couldn’t blame Sara for asking questions. Nicole had the answers because she was normally the one doing the tracking down and killing, but Nicole never would have taken a job like this. It was normally total psycho’s that took on the hits where families were involved and the killing of children was needed. Nicole only ever took the high paying jobs that involved crooked business men, or a snitch willing to sell out someone. Nicole had never given any thought to killing a snitch until it was Samantha being classed as one.

Sara had more questions she wanted to ask Nicole, but they couldn’t talk more about it until they were back on the road again, so they all played the happy family until they were back in the car and on the road again.

“How would you go about tracking us down if it was you coming after us?” Sara asked as she sat forward in the seat and rested an arm on each of the front seats and leaned between them to look at Nicole while they spoke.

“Sara, don’t ask questions like that.” Samantha said.

“No, it’s alright Sammi. She has a right to ask.” Nicole said in Sara’s defence, which made Samantha smile as she saw that Nicole was beginning to thaw towards her daughter.

“So where would you start looking?” Sara continued her line of questioning.

“I’d start with the parents and other family you many run to for help.” Nicole explained.

“That will be a waste of time for them then.” Samantha said with a sick sounding laugh. “Sara’s never seen my parents since she was one, and they wanted me to let Jason’s parents take him, so I could return home to them.” Samantha explained.

“Jason’s parents thought you were having his child?” Nicole asked with some shock in her voice.

“Yes, but they soon backed off when they looked into Sara’s eyes and saw you looking back at them.” Samantha smiled at the memory of the look on the faces of Jason’s parents when they realised that she’d had Nicolas’s child and not their sons.

“Where were you living when all this happened?” Nicole asked.

“I was living with my aunt, but she passed away a couple of years ago, so it’s just me and Sara now.” Samantha said with pride as she turned a little further to look Sara in the eyes.

“And you as well.” Sara grinned as she turned to look at Nicole.

Nicole could have argued the point about her leaving once they were safe, but she didn’t want to keep going in circles with the two of them, so she just smiled and returned to looking at the road again.

“What would your next move be, once the family lead didn’t work?” Sara asked as she tried to get back to the subject of how Nicole would go about tracking them down.

“Credit cards, ATM’s and police scanners would be the next step after the family, as well as checking for any other information from your past.” Nicole explained.

“Won’t that lead them to you though?” Samantha asked looking worried.

“No, just a grave belonging to Nicolas Johnson, who died eleven years ago.” Nicole reminded her. “I’m not that person anymore, and no one will ever find a match between Nicole and Nicolas.” She added.

Samantha looked a little hurt when Nicole pointed out she wasn’t the boy Samantha fell in love with anymore, and she just didn’t feel the same way she did back then, and the sooner She realised that, the sooner Nicole could get them to safety and then move on with her life.

Sara spent some time asking Nicole question after question about how she’d track down different people, and Nicole would answer most of them, but Sara soon learned when she’d hit on a subject Nicole wasn’t happy about, and she was soon having a real conversation with her former father.

Nicole was glad when Sara ran out of questions to do with her being an assassin and started talking about her being transgendered instead.

“We need to get you on some blockers to start with.” Nicole said after Sara asked where she would need to start with her own transition.

     “What are blockers?” Samantha asked.

“That’s what they give children like Sara to stop them starting male puberty.” Nicole explained.

“How do you know all this stuff?” Samantha asked as she saw how happy Sara was to be talking about her future with her new aunt.

Samantha and Sara had managed to talk Nicole into letting Sara call her Aunty Nicole, or Aunt Nikki for short. This made Sara even happier being able to call her Aunty Nikki, and it made Nicole smile when she heard Sara say it as well.

“I had a lot of time between jobs, so I do a lot of research into the way I was feeling, and I took the blockers for some time before I had the surgery.” Nicole explained.

Sara was soon pleading with Nicole and her mum to let her do some shopping at a mall when they entered a city on the way to the location of the cabin. Nicole tried to argue that it was a bad idea, but soon gave in, if only to stop Sara sulking in the back seat and she thought that no one was going to realise that the woman with the short brown hair and a sixteen year old daughter could be Samantha and Nicolas Kaye.

“Alright, we’ll go do some shopping, but we stick together, and if I say we go, we go. Do you understand me?” Nicole asked Sara more than Samantha, as she knew that Sara would be the rogue element to try and keep an eye on.

“I promise Aunty Nikki, I promise.” Sara said excitedly from the back seat as she watched Nicole pull into the mall parking area.

Nicole parked the car and then she and Samantha took an excited looking Sara into the mall to enjoy an afternoon of shopping.

Sara was soon trying on clothes and pouting at her mother and Aunty when they tried to stop her wanting them. Nicole not being used to the look Sara would give them though, she was soon buying Sara whatever she wanted. Nicole was happy she’d got plenty of cash on her, so as not to leave a trail for anyone to follow.

They had been in the mall for a couple of hours when Nicole noticed a couple of men she’d seen close to them a couple of other times as they seemed to be looking around for something, but at the same time they looked puzzled as well, like they couldn’t find what they were looking for.

“I need you to stick close to Sara for a bit, while I go and check something out.” Nicole warned Samantha just before she slipped through the crowd of shoppers as she made her way over to where the two men were stood looking around the clothes shop. The thing Nicole found weird was the fact they were in a women’s clothes shop, and neither of the two men looked like they were out shopping with their wives or girlfriends. Nicole thought they looked like ex military.

Samantha lost sight of Nicole, but she went over and warned Sara they may need to make a run for it at any minute. Sara looked worried, but did as she was told as they waited for Nicole near the exit.

Nicole got behind the two men and she could now see that one of the men had what looked like a cell phone, but it was actually a screen for locating someone with a tracking device. Nicole wasn’t a hundred percent sure they were there looking for Samantha and Sara, but she needed to find out, and she also needed to find out what could be carrying a tracking device on either of them.

Samantha looked worried when she saw Nicole appear before them looking a little angry as she frowned at the two of them.

     “What’s wrong Nikki?” Samantha asked.

“I think they tracked us down somehow.” Nicole warned as she led the two of them from the shop and down the aisle to the ladies rest room.

“How were they able to track us down? I thought you stopped them from being able to do that?” Samantha asked with worry in her voice.

“I thought I had, but it looks like they have a tracking device.” Nicole explained. “Do either of you still have your cell phones or something that anyone gave to you since the trouble in that diner?” Nicole asked.

“One of the detectives bought Sara an MP3 player to help her pass the time.” Samantha pointed out.

“And you still have this MP3 player on you know?” Nicole asked as she looked at Sara.

“Yes, it’s in my purse.” Sara said as she went to open her purse, but Nicole stopped her.

“Don’t get it out here, or we may give them a clue as to who you are.” Nicole said as she made Sara place it back in her purse. “We need to get the two of you some new clothes, so I can take everything you have and get rid of it before we leave the mall.” Nicole explained as she went into another shop and started helping Samantha put a couple of new outfits together.

Once they had clothes, shoes and new purses, Nicole led them the rest of the way to the rest room and then left them in the large disabled stall while she left with all their other stuff packed in a couple of shopping bags to see if she could lead the men away from Sara and Samantha.

“Whatever you do, don’t speak to any anyone and I’ll meet you at the car.” Nicole said just before leaving the restroom and heading back towards the shop where she’d last seen the two men.

Nicole didn’t get too far before she saw the two men walked towards her. One of them looked excited as he looked around, which let Nicole know that they were using something on either Sara or Samantha to track them, and they were picking up on the signal coming from one of the shopping bags. Nicole was grateful that there were enough people around to make it too hard for the two men to pinpoint which shopper had the tracker on them. She managed to walk right past them and then she started moving faster, in some hopes of leading the men away from Sara and Samantha.

The two men fell for Nicole’s trick, and were now following her away from them. Nicole followed the signs for the parking area on the other side of the mall where she soon found a couple of what looked like lumberjacks loading up their truck. Nicole waited until they finished loading up the back of the pickup truck they were driving, and then she slipped the shopping bags in with their stuff before slipping away and watched as the two men ran to another parking area to get their own car and follow the tracking signal, thinking they were still on the trail of Samantha and Sara.

Nicole panicked when she finally got back to the car, but couldn’t see Samantha or Sara in it to start with, but she soon let out a sigh of relief when she saw their heads pop up. They both looked happy to see her as well. Nicole got in the car and took the keys from Samantha and starting the car before she pulled out the parking area and headed off in the opposite direction to what she’d seen the two men drive off in.

“How did you lose them Aunt Nikki?” Sara asked excitedly from the back of the car.

“I dropped the bags in the back of a pickup that belongs to a couple of rather large looking men that looked like they could take care of themselves, and they look nothing like you and your mother.” Nicole explained to a worried looking Samantha and Sara, when they thought two more people might die because of them.

“What if they managed to get more of these tracking devices on either of us?” Samantha asked looking worried.

“Do either of you have anything left on you that you had at the safe house?” Nicole asked as she pulled over to the side of the road, ready to jump out and get rid of it before they got too far away from the place the two men last had a strong signal from the tracker.

“There are just the clothes we packed up when you first rescued us.” Samantha said after giving it some thought.

“We better play it safe and get rid of it all.” Nicole said as she got out and then helped Sara and Samantha to get out and go to the trunk and remove all the clothes and even the bags from the trunk and then throw them in a dumpster. Nicole flicked open a lighter and then threw it into the dumpster and watched it go up in flames before they got back in the car and drove away.

They were soon back on the road and putting some distance between them and the two guys that found them at the mall. They just drove in silence for some time as Samantha and Sara could both see Nicole was deep in thought, and after they were nearly caught, they wanted Nicole on her game.

“If they were able to track us, then why did it take so long to catch up with us?” Samantha finally asked when the silence got too much.

“It would have taken them some time to catch up with us. Chances are they would have found us the next time we stopped for the night, so it was actually a good thing we stopped at that mall after all.” Nicole shrugged.

“So do you think the two men at the mall were working with the pizza guy from the safe house?” Sara asked.

“No, you have more than one fixer looking for you, but I’d say the two we saw today are working with the detective that gave you the mp3 player. Nicole explained with a little too much excitement in her voice.

“I’m sure some people would be excited to have more than one hit man after them, but I’m finding it a little hard to get all warm and fuzzy inside.” Samantha said heavy with sarcasm. Samantha frowned and then started grinning when she saw that she’d made Sara and Nicole start giggling at her.

“I don’t see what’s so funny about all this Sara! We have assassins after us.” Samantha said as she found herself laughing now.

“It’s a little funny when you put it that way mummy.” Sara said between giggles.

“Sara does have a point; you did sound kind of funny.” Nicole added as she giggled.

“Shouldn’t we be more worried if the police want me dead as well as this drug dealer?” Samantha asked when they all stopped laughing about her comment.

“It’s not the whole police force that’s after you, but it could cause some trouble for us, having this detective looking for the two of you. He has access to more information than the other fixers will, and two goons willing to carry out his orders.” Nicole thought out loud.

“How could that detective do such a thing? He’s supposed to protect people and uphold the law.” Samantha said with shock in her voice.

“Not all of them remain on the right side of the law.” Nicole pointed out. “Mounting debt, bed bets, or just being blackmailed into breaking the law can soon blacken their heart to what’s right and wrong, but the biggest deciding factor I’ve found, as always been money. Most people will do almost anything if the price is right.” Nicole added with a shrug like it was no big deal.

“What do we do now then?” Sara asked the question that was also on Samantha’s lips.

“We carry on like I planned, but we need to switch out the car again. It won’t be long before they realise what happened and then they will return to the mall and start looking for us on the stall security cameras.”Nicole explained the plan.

“Won’t they need warrants or something like that?” Samantha asked.

“If they are working for a detective, then I doubt it will be a problem for them to get all the help they need.” Nicole warned.

“Is it still safe to go to this place you told us about?” Samantha asked looking worried for Sara more than herself.

“Yes, the place we are going to isn’t on any map, and is so far off the grid, that without a satellite they won’t find it, and I don’t think the people looking for you, have that kind of money or influence.” Nicole grinned like she knew people like that.

Samantha was still worried about everything, but she did like the idea of Nicole being one step ahead of them, and she felt safe knowing that Nicole would do everything she could to keep Sara alive.

Samantha and Sara were both a little puzzled when Nicole pulled into the parking area of a train station.

“I thought we were going to switch cars, not get on a train?” Samantha said as she looked at Nicole for an answer.

“That is what we are doing, but the car isn’t in this state, so we need to get on a train to take us to it,” Nicole said as she parked the car and then got out and helped Samantha and Sara to get all the bags together before they entered the station.

Nicole had removed the blonde wig while still in the car, so she was now not wearing a disguise of any type as she walked up to the counter and bought her and Sara tickets, while Samantha bought one for herself.

Samantha couldn’t help smiling as she saw Nicole and Sara sat side by side. They looked more like mother and daughter than her and Sara ever did, even before Samantha cut and dyed her hair and started doing her makeup differently.

Nicole had to give Sara a teen magazine to stop her looking in Samantha’s direction all the time and giving them away if anyone saw the security footage once they found the car.

The train finally arrived and they all got on it and Samantha sat close to Sara and Nicole, but not to close. The journey took a couple of hours, and thankfully it was a quiet trip.

Once at the station they needed to exit at, they got off the train and then Samantha went to a hotel Nicole had told her about, while Sara went with Nicole to pick up the car from long term parking where Nicole had stored it some time back.

Nicole and Sara soon had the car and made their way back to the hotel that Nicole had sent Samantha to with some fake ID she’d made up so Samantha could get a room. Sara ran over and hugged her mother and they all settled down for the night and some much needed rest after a long day on the road and train.

“Did you have any trouble getting the car?” Samantha asked as she hugged her daughter back.

“No, we got the car just fine, and it’s only a short trip now to the place I know to be safe for you both.” Nicole said as she handed out the food her and Sara had grabbed on the way to the hotel after they got the car.

Nicole waited for Samantha and Sara to get ready for bed, and then she got changed and settled down in a chair facing the door ready for trouble, just in case it came along through the night. She would feel safer once she got to the cabin. Nicole also needed to get in touch with Ferret and see what he could dig up on the detectives looking into the case involving Samantha. Neither Samantha nor Sara could remember the detective’s name that gave Sara the mp3 player, but Nicole was hoping Ferret could send her some photos for the two of them to look at.

With the last stretch of their trip to the cabin ahead of them, Nicole was soon enjoying some sleep, while Samantha and Sara slept on the bed cuddled up close together.

Part Seven of Eleven

Chapter Seven: The Cabin

Nicole left the hotel with Sara the next morning before Samantha did, so they didn’t get spotted together. Sara was sat in the car waited for her mother to turn up, while Nicole stood leaning against the car as she placed a call to Ferret.*

“Ice!? Is that you? Why the hell didn’t you call me yesterday?” Ferret’s voice asked in a panic on the other end of the cell phone.

“Sorry about that Ferret, but I had a crazy sort of day.” Nicole chuckled. “Turns out one of the detective’s on the case is working for the bad guy and has a couple of thugs working with him. They look like ex military, and the detective managed to get a tracker on the woman’s son.” Nicole explained, only just remembering to refer to Sara as still being a boy. “Is that what you wanted to inform me of?” Nicole asked with a smug tone to her voice, like she already knew she was right.

“I didn’t know any of that Ice. What I wanted to do is warn you that some bigger names have taken an interest in this job since your name was linked with a possible counter hit on the guy at the safe house, and also the two officers.” Ferret started to explain.

“We knew this could be the case from the beginning.” Nicole shrugged. “Do you have any idea who the other players are?” Nicole asked trying to focus on just how serious it had gotten.

“There’s that large German calling himself Thor, and a couple of others.” Ferret said in a vague tone, but Nicole could sense that tone to Ferret’s voice that said he knew something else.

“Who are the others Ferret?” Nicole growled into the phone.

“Athena and Viper.” Ferret said as he waited for Nicole to blow her top.

“Athena and Viper?” Nicole growled. “Why would both of them show an interest in this job?” Nicole asked as she tried to get her feelings under control.

“You know they both have scores to settle with you over some jobs you beat them to, and even though the payoff is small, they both want to get involved if it means taking you out.” Ferret explained.

“I have beaten them to quite a few jobs in the past, so I shouldn’t be surprised to hear this really.” Nicole sighed. “Do you have any idea where they are at the minute?”

“I have images of them both visiting a mall, but they don’t seem to have any idea, or the police don’t beyond that point.” Ferret explained as it sounded like he was doing something on a keyboard at his end of the phone. “The police are looking at security footage; it looks like they want to see what disguise Samantha and her son are using to avoid detection, and also what the person who took them from the safe house looks like.” Ferret added.

“I’m hoping they both look different enough to stop anyone from spotting them in a crowd of people, and I dumped the car we were using yesterday, but I wasn’t able to burn it out, so it’s only a matter of time before they find it and get DNA from it.” Nicole explained to Ferret.

“I don’t have anything on the police system to say they’ve found the car yet, so I doubt they’ve learned anything from the mall yet either.” Ferret informed her.

“I need you to find me photos of all the detectives on the case involving Samantha Kaye, and send them to me as soon as you have them. I need to find out which detective is helping Damon Gunn to carry out the hit on Samantha.” Nicole ordered him. “I’ll call you again in two hours for the information.” Nicole added before she ended the call and then took the phone apart and snapped the sim card in half before dropping it all down the nearest drain.

Sara was sat in the back of the car applying some makeup when Nicole got in the car to wait for Samantha to arrive. Nicole couldn’t help smiling when she saw how different Sara was to the boy she first met back at the safe house. Sara was wearing a pale green dress and she’d padded out the bra with a set of false breasts that were glued to her chest, making them feel a little more real, due to the pull on Sara’s chest. She’d also spent some time that morning painting her nails and playing with her hair.

“I’m quite jealous of you right now Sara.” Nicole pouted as she turned around in her seat to look at Sara in the back.

“You’re jealous of me?” Sara asked with a puzzled look as she put her small compact mirror away.

“Yes, because you get to spend some time as a young girl. I never got to do that, or enjoy all the things I hope you get to do before you become a woman.” Nicole said with a sigh as she rested her chin on her hands as she looked at a blushing Sara in the back of the car.

“But you’re a woman now Nikki! What could be better than that?” Sara asked with shock in her voice.

“Please don’t be in such a hurry to grow up Sara.” Nicole said as she reached out and cupped Sara’s cheek in her hand. “I just want you to enjoy being a girl before you become a woman.” Nicole added.

“Do you really think I will become a woman one day Aunty Nikki?” Sara asked, amazed at the change in the woman that was once her father.

“I said I’d do all I could to make your dream come true, and I always try to keep my word Sara.” Nicole smiled. “I feel it’s the least I can do after not being part of your life for the past twelve years.” She added.

“Will we ever see you again when this is all over? I’d like to still have you in my life.” Sara said in a whisper, hoping not to have Nicole start shouting at her again, like she had all the other times she’d brought the subject up with Nicole.

“I’ll come up with some way to stay in touch with you, but please don’t keep going on about it. I don’t want to be away from you either, but I can’t undo everything I’ve done, and I have some very dangerous people after me now as well, and I couldn’t live with myself if anything happened to you or your mother because of me.” Nicole said with fear in her voice.

“I thought you said you didn’t have those kinds of feelings for my mother anymore?” Sara asked.

“I don’t have those feelings for your mother, but I do still love her, just as I’m coming to love you.” Nicole smiled as she gave Sara’s cheek a pinch.

“So you love her like a sister?” Sara said as she understood what Nicole was getting at.

Before Nicole had time to say anymore questions, they saw Samantha walk around the corner and make her way over to the car.

“Did it look like anyone was following you when you left the hotel?” Nicole asked once Samantha was in the car and they were leaving the city again.

“I couldn’t see anyone, but I’m not sure what to look for.” Samantha shrugged.

“You’ll be at my version of a safe house tonight, and then you can both relax a little while I plan out our next move.” Nicole frowned.

“Do you have any idea what that plan might be yet?” Samantha asked with some hope.

“Yes, but we’ll talk about it once we get to the cabin.” Nicole said before she remembered what she was saying.

“Cabin?” Samantha asked with a raised eyebrow as she realised that Nicole had slipped up for the first time.

“Yes, a cabin, but it’s got some mod cons, so don’t look too worried.” Nicole smiled. “Hot water, electric, and a barbecue to cook on.” Nicole added with a grin now as she saw Samantha relax.

“I hope you have more than just a barbecue to cook on?” Samantha asked looking worried again.

“There’s a kitchen and cooker as well.” Nicole smiled.

“What about the internet?” Sara asked from the back seat.

“Sorry, but that would be part of the grid we’re trying to get away from.” Nicole pointed out.

“How do you keep in touch with people then?” Sara whined.

“Simple, I don’t.” Nicole frowned. “I don’t have any devices at the cabin for anyone to trace, but I do have a good collection of books there for you to sit and read.” Nicole added.

“Read? That sounds so boring.” Sara whined some more.

“Not half as boring as being dead is.” Samantha snapped at Sara. “This isn’t just some adventure we’re having young lady. People want to kill us.” Samantha reminded her.

“Don’t be too hard on her Sammi, she’s dealing with it all pretty well, and it is an adventure in a roundabout way.” Nicole said in Sara’s defence.

Samantha looked at Nicole in shock, just before she looked at a smirking Sara sat in the back. “When did this happen?” Samantha asked.

“When did what happen?” Sara asked looking all innocent at her mother.

“You two become best of friends?” Samantha asked with a smirk of her own as she liked the fact Nicole was warming to the fact she had a daughter. Samantha felt a small glimmer of hope that Nicole may want to keep in touch with Sara when all this was over.

“I find she’s bearable when she’s not whining all the time.” Nicole grinned as she looked at Sara in the rear view mirror.

“I don’t whine.” Sara whined, which soon had Nicole and Samantha laughing.

“No, you never whine do you sweetie.” Samantha said.

Nicole didn’t want to risk stopping for too long, so they stopped in a small town on the way to the cabin and grabbed some food to eat on the way, so as not to get caught on to many cameras. Nicole went in for the food while Samantha and Sara waited in the car. Nicole didn’t want to worry the two of them with the news they now had two high class assassins after them, just because of what Nicole had done by stepping in and saving them in the first place. Nicole didn’t think Athena and Viper would be onto her so soon, but they did have a unique way of tracking people down, just like she did, and they had the money to buy the right sort of people to help them.

They were soon turning off the main roads and heading up a dirt road through a forest. Nicole then parked up behind an old run down looking cabin that left Samantha and Sara looking worried that this was the place Nicole wanted them to stop at. Nicole pulled up in front of the barn to the side of the cabin and then got out and opened the doors to the barn and then got back in the car before she drove it into the barn where Samantha and Sara saw a large 4x4 with some heavy duty wheels and tyres on it as well as some other vehicles that were covered with tarp.

“Don’t look so worried, this is just the place I park the car and take that up to the real cabin.” Nicole explained as she got out the car and started moving all the stuff over to the 4x4.

Samantha and Sara helped, and they were soon back on the road, if you could call it a road they were travelling on. Samantha and Sara could see the reason for the 4x4 now.

“I can see why we switched vehicles now.” Sara said from the back seat where she was gripping the seatbelt like her life depended on it.

“If it was easy to get to, then everyone would be going to it.” Nicole said as tried to focus on not driving them off what little road there was, into a ditch.

“I think we should be quiet and let Nikki drive the car sweetie.” Samantha said nervously as she gripped the dash in front of her.

Nicole hit a dip in the track and it scared Samantha and Sara enough to make them both scream out, so they both shut up and let Nicole focus on her driving. They both let out a sigh when they rounded a bend and saw a large log cabin come into view and Nicole parked up right outside the place.

“Does this look a little better for you?” Nicole asked as she saw the two of them grinning as they got out the 4x4 and took in the view overlooking a valley full of trees and not another living thing in sight for as far as they could see.

“Wow, this place is so beautiful.” Samantha sighed as she finally felt like they could stop looking over their shoulders and relax. “Do you come here very often?” Samantha asked.

“I started coming here more after Max died.” Nicole said as she too looked around at the place Max had found to build his secret get away. “Max bought the parcel of land and then built this place from the ground up with his own bare hands.” Nicole explained.

“Max was the guy that found you and trained you all those years ago right?” Samantha asked as she tried to remember some of the vague talks she’d had with Nicole since they were thrown back into each other’s lives.

“Yes, he found me a couple of days after I ran, or Nicolas ran. I pulled a gun on him and tried to force him to take me someplace, but he just threw a screwdriver at me and knocked me out by hitting me in the head with the handle.” Nicole giggled at the memory of that night they met.

“Why didn’t he just kill you, if he was also an assassin?” Samantha asked with some confusion. “Not that I’m not glad he didn’t kill you.” Samantha smiled.

“Max told me that I had a look in my eyes when I was pointing the gun at him, so he gave me a choice.” Nicole said.

“A choice, what sort of a choice?”

“Let him train me to become a fixer, as he called it, or he could just kill me and then bury me out in the woods.” Nicole said with a shrug.

“What?! Do you think he really would have done it, if you hadn’t said yes to him?”

“I’m not sure. Max always seemed to know what I was thinking, so he already knew I’d say yes.” Nicole said with a faraway look in her eyes.

“I think some of it rubbed off on you, but I can tell you miss him.” Samantha said as she wrapped an arm around Nicole’s waist and rested her head on Nicole’s shoulder.

“Max was more of a father to me than my real father was.” Nicole chucked at the bizarre thought of a trained assassin turning out to be more understanding and caring than the man partly responsible for bringing a child into the world.

“What sort of people did Max kill?” Samantha asked in a whisper, not sure if Nicole would answer or not.

“He was the one that taught me to only take on the high paying jobs and never target families or children. I think Max lost his wife and child in a hit that got out of hand, and he became a fixer in the hopes of stopping the same thing happening to others.” Nicole explained. “I found some photos of Max with a woman and a small child; I also found a small grave site and buried Max there.” Nicole added.

“Who will bury you when the time comes Nicole?” Samantha asked.

“Not my problem, I won’t be around to worry about it.” Nicole shrugged as she tried to hide the fact she did wonder if anyone would remember her when she was gone, but she had Samantha and Sara in her life now, and they seemed to like her, even if she was a killer.

“Are you two going to start kissing each other?” Sara giggled as she started making kissing sounds.

Nicole was glad Sara had distracted Samantha, as she didn’t want to talk about her death anymore. Nicole smiled as she watched Samantha chasing Sara around. Samantha did finally catch Sara and they just fell to the ground giggling.

Once Samantha and Sara were back on their feet, they all got the 4x4 unpacked, and Nicole showed them to the bedroom they would be using.

“I’m sorry, but the two of you will need to share this bed, as we only have the one bedroom.” Nicole explained.

“Where will you be sleeping?” Samantha asked.

“I’ll take the couch, it’s pretty comfy, and I can keep an eye out for trouble.” Nicole said as she left the bedroom and left Samantha and Sara to get cleaned up while Nicole went and got the barbecue warmed up.

Nicole soon had some steaks cooking that they had picked up on the way to the cabin, and Samantha and Sara were busy in the kitchen making a mixed salad to go with them.

Samantha and Sara looked to be enjoying some real home cooked food for once, and they were soon falling asleep with full bellies. Samantha led Sara to the bedroom and they both got ready for bed, while Nicole stopped up and started cleaning her pistols. Nicole always did this at the end of a mission, and also just to relax and clear her mind.

Nicole didn’t think it would hurt to let the police and the other fixers chase their own tails for a couple of weeks while she recharged and thought up a plan to get everyone off Samantha and Sara’s back for good.

“I need to go down the mountain for a while, but I’ll be back by dinner time.” Nicole said a couple of days after they arrived at the cabin.

“Can you bring back some things we’re running low on, while you’re down there?” Samantha asked.

“Yes, I can do that, just make a list and I’ll pick it all up for you.” Nicole said as she slipped on her boots and tucked in the figure hugging jeans she was wearing with the chequered blue shirt.

“Can I come with you Aunt Nikki?” Sara asked.

“No! You can stop here where you’re safe.” Nicole said in a stern tone that left Sara no doubt she meant every word of it, and arguing would be a waste of time.

Sara threw down her shoes and stormed off back to the bedroom acting more like the twelve year old she was again now.

“I’m sorry about that Nikki, but she is only twelve at the end of the day.” Samantha sighed as she heard the bedroom door slam shut.

“I understand that Sammi, but I hope she will understand that I’m only doing it for her own good.” Nicole said as she finished getting ready to leave.

“I know she does Nikki; but she also wants to be just like you, but that can never happen while we’re stuck here hiding out.” Samantha tried to explain the reason for Sara being so moody.

“I’ll be making some calls while I’m down the mountain, so I’ll see what I can sort out to help Sara feel like she’s making some progress on her transition.” Nicole said as she gave Samantha a hug before she left.

Samantha waved Nicole off before she went back into the cabin, so she could try and make Sara understand the reason for Nicole not taking her down the mountain with her.

Sara was sat on the bed flicking through a magazine using angry actions to turn each page. She looked at her mother and then went back to looking at the magazine like Samantha had never entered the room.

“Sara sweetie, can we have a chat about Nicole?” Samantha asked as she sat on the bed next to Sara and forced her to put the magazine down.

“What’s the point of talking about anything mother. Nicole still just thinks I’m a kid, and she couldn’t wait to get away from me just now.” Sara scowled.

“Do you really believe that Nikki thinks that?” Samantha asked looking hurt at Sara’s words. “Nicole cares for you so much that she can’t do her job properly if she had to look out for you while she’s out there meeting with people and trying to keep us safe.” Samantha added as she pulled Sara into a hug with her.

“Do you really believe that mummy?” Sara asked as she got a hug from her mother.

“I know that sweetie, so let’s go for a walk while we wait for her to return.” Samantha said as she broke the hug and got to her feet just before she pulled Sara to her feet and then led her out the cabin and up the trail that led to the mountain top.

“I spoke to Nikki the other day about me becoming a girl, and she said that I’ll look even better than she does because I’ll be starting earlier. Do you think I’ll look prettier than Nikki?” Sara asked as they walked up the trail.

“You’re already prettier to me sweetie.” Samantha said as she wrapped an arm around Sara’s waist and pulled her closer. “We will get you to a doctor and on the right path just as soon as we get all this behind us.” Samantha added.

“I know mum, and I’m sorry for playing up, but I just feel like I’m treading water at the minute. To be dressed all the time, but still be so far away from where I want to be.” Sara pouted as she rested her head on her mother’s shoulder.

“And looking at Nikki just makes you want it even quicker?” Samantha worked out.

“Yes, I do feel jealous of her when I think she was once like me.” Sara said as she realised that she had been argumentative with Nicole since she found out who she once was. “No wonder she hates me.” Sara added with a heavy sigh.

“I’ve already told you that Nikki doesn’t hate you. I think she feels sorry for you, and wishes she could do more to help you, but it’s going to take time.” Samantha smiled.

“I hate waiting for it to happen though mummy.” Sara pouted.

“I know.” Samantha growled as she hugged Sara a little tighter just before she started giggling.

Nicole made it down the mountain much quicker without Samantha and Sara in the 4x4 with her. She parked it in the old barn and then she took one of the other three normal road cars she had stored in the place. All the cars were kept road legal, so she never had any trouble with the police, and she also made sure the ID she was using, matched the way she looked.

“Have you seen any of the news broadcasts?” Ferret asked Nicole when she got to a point where she had a signal on the cell phone she was using.

“Hello to you to Ferret.” Nicole said sarcastically. “And no I haven’t seen any news in a couple of days.” Nicole added with a little confusion in her voice as to why it was so important for her to see the news.

“The reason I ask, is because I was worried something might have happened to you, the woman and her son.” Ferret said.

“Why would you think something like that Ferret, what’s happened?” Nicole asked as she sensed something was very wrong.

“Over the last couple of days since we last spoke, three different women matching the same description as this Samantha Kaye have been killed.” Ferret explained the reason for his worry.

“Just women?” Nicole asked as she sensed there was more to Ferret’s tone than just the death of three women.

“No, they all had young sons with them that were also killed.” Ferret said with an edge of anger in his voice. “The bastards killed the mothers and the kids.” Ferret added.

“How did they all die?” Nicole asked as she tried to keep her anger under control.

“All three were made to look like failed muggings, but the fact they all look close to what Samantha and her son looks like, just makes me see that they were failed hits.” Ferret explained what he knew.

“Sounds like sloppy locals looking for an easy payout. Athena and Viper wouldn’t make a mistake like that.” Nicole thought out loud. “I know this is a long shot, but have you had any word of where they might be?” Nicole asked.

“They’re ghosts, just like you are, but I doubt they know where you are because I’ve seen no trace of the police knowing where you took them. Hell, I don’t even know where you took them, other than a cabin out in the wilderness someplace.” Ferret said with frustration.

“All part of what makes me good at my job Ferret.” Nicole said in a cold hard tone. “I’m sorry those people died, but I can only keep these too alive.” Nicole added.

“Even at the cost of so many others?” Ferret asked; shocked at just how heartless Ice could be, but then he remembered how she earned her name of the ice princess. “What’s so special about this woman?” Ferret almost pleaded.

“Keep out of all that Ferret or I may have to rethink us working together in the future.” Nicole warned.

“I was just wondering if you’re doing all this has anything to do with the trouble in her old home town with a guy called Jason Ackles and a Nicolas Johnson. Were you related to one of them, and you feel like you owe her something?” Ferret asked.

Nicole felt a lump in her throat when she heard those names, but she soon realised that Ferret was none the wiser as to her being one of them, by the fact he’d just asked if she was related to one of them, and not one of them. “I’m asking you not to look into it anymore than you already have Ferret.” Nicole said in a calm voice that was full of warning.

“Fine, I’ll stop looking and asking questions, but you need to put a stop to this Damon Gunn and get the contract he took out on your friend removed, so no one else dies because of it.” Ferret said as a counter offer.

“I’ve already worked that much out, and I need all that info I asked you for the other day.” Nicole reminded him.

“I’ve just sent it all to your email as an encrypted file.” Ferret said with a smug tone to his voice. “You will find info on all the detectives on the case and also everything I could find on the Gunn’s as well.” He informed her.

“Thanks Ferret. I’ll get it all downloaded and then work out a plan of how to get at this Gunn and force him to remove the contract he took out on Miss Kaye.” Nicole said.

“What do you plan to do about Athena and Viper?” Ferret asked.

“Keep out their way and keep them away from their target.” Nicole said not having any real answer for him. “I’ll call if I need any more help.” Nicole added just before she took the phone apart and destroyed it.

Nicole was soon on the road again and heading for the local community college where she could blend in and get the email Ferret sent her, and not get noticed as she did so, and if anyone were able to trace it, they would then have to pick her out of a large crowd of students.

She got to the college and had no trouble grabbing the file before she made her way over to a Costco and stocked up on food and all the things Samantha asked for. Nicole even called in and saw a doctor she knew to do deals under the table, and she soon had a prescription for a course of androgen blockers to help Sara on her way to womanhood. Nicole also got some injectable estrogens to help Sara to start developing as a girl. Nicole was hoping it would make up in some way for all the things she wasn’t able to do as a father.

Nicole grabbed some news papers on her way back to the cabin, so she could make Samantha and Sara understand the reason for her needing to leave again, and take care of this problem once and for all, but she could only do that if she knew the two of them were safe.

Part Eight of Eleven

Chapter Eight: Here’s the plan

Samantha and Sara both ran out to greet Nicole when she got back up to the cabin with the shopping. Nicole looked a little shocked when Sara ran over to her and threw her arms around Nicole’s’ waist and hugged her.

“I’m sorry Aunt Nikki. I’m sorry for being mad with you earlier.” Sara said as she felt Nicole start hugging her back.

“Don’t worry about it kiddo. I know you just wanted to come along for something to do.” Nicole said as she hugged Sara back. “I’ve brought you a little gift back as well.” Nicole added with a grin when she saw an excited looking Sara look up at her.

“What did you get me?” Sara asked as she broke the hug and stepped back expecting Nicole to give her the gift she just said she had for her.

“First you help to get all the stuff out the 4x4, and then you’ll get the gift.” Nicole smiled as she tapped Sara on the nose, just before she turned Sara around and led her to the back of the 4x4 and gave her a couple of bags full of shopping.

Samantha joined in and they were soon all walking into the cabin with bags of shopping. Nicole had left the newspapers in the front of the 4x4 where Samantha and Sara wouldn’t find them until Nicole had time to sit them down, so she could explain it all to them, and what she needed to do.

Nicole couldn’t stop thinking about the three women and their sons that had died so far, just because of some want to be assassins not doing their homework before going after a target. Nicole knew that Samantha wasn’t going to take the news very well, that people are still dying because of her wanting to do the right thing.

“That’s the last of it!” Sara shouted as she pulled the final bag out the back.

Nicole grabbed the newspapers off the front seat and followed Sara back into the cabin and then into the kitchen where Samantha was busy putting all the shopping away.

“Thank you for getting some real food for us to eat.” Samantha said as she put the shopping away. “I was getting sick of eating steak and baked potatoes.” Samantha added with a giggle.

“Sorry about that, but I never really learned how to cook much. I never had the need with it just being me.” Nicole shrugged as she sat down at the breakfast bar and watched Sara help her mother put the shopping away.

“Sara and I will have to teach you how to cook then won’t we?” Samantha grinned. “We don’t have much else to do around here.” She added with a shrug.

“I won’t be stopping long. I need to go back and take care of this contract Damon Gunn took out on you.” Nicole said as she looked at the table in front of her rather than the look she knew Samantha would be giving her right now.

“You’ve already done more than enough, and Sara and I are safe now.” Samantha said looking confused.

“I need the two of you to come and sit down for a couple of minutes.” Nicole said as she pointed at the seats on the other side of the breakfast bar.

Sara and Samantha both sat down facing Nicole, both of them looking puzzled at the way Nicole was looking at them. “What’s got you looking so worried Nikki?” Samantha asked.

“People are getting hurt, no worse than that; they are dying because of what that man has done.” Nicole said as she slid the newspapers over to Samantha, so she could read for herself why Nicole had to leave again.

Samantha saw the headlines and then started reading the story of the three women being killed along with their sons. They even commented on the case with Samantha and Nicolas, and how they thought it was a case of mistaken identity, and how they thought the people doing the killing thought that the women were Samantha Kaye and her son Nicolas Kaye. Samantha felt ill as she read about the deaths, and she could now understand why Nicole felt the need to go back and force Damon Gunn to end the contract against her.

“What if you go and tell this Damon Gunn that I will remain lost, and not testify against his son. Will that be enough to make him stop this madness?” Samantha asked with tears in her eyes for the dead women and their sons who died such a pointless death because of something she felt the need to do.

“He would never believe that Sammi. The only way he could be sure to guarantee your silence is to see you dead.” Nicole explained the truth to Samantha and Sara as they hugged each other.

“What can we do to help you Nikki?” Samantha asked as she looked up at Nicole.

“You can both stop here and remain safe while I go and put an end to this.” Nicole scowled. “I’ve found out that some very dangerous people are looking for me because they found out I’d taken the contract and then protected you instead of killing you.” Nicole added.

“We can’t just sit here and wait for you to sort all this out.” Samantha argued.

“Knowing that you and Sara are going to be safe here, is the only way I’ll be able to focus on what I need to do.” Nicole said in return. “Do you still want your gift?” Nicole asked as she looked at Sara.

“Yes please.” Sara said looking excited now.

Samantha just frowned at Nicole for the clever way she’d managed to change the subject away from what she was planning to do, but she was curious as to what this gift was Nicole had for Sara.

Nicole placed a bag on the table and slid it over to Sara. “What’s in here?” Sara asked.

“Open it and find out.” Nicole grinned.

Sara opened the bag and then looked a little puzzled at what she found inside. That was until she pulled out one of the boxes and read the label. “Androgen blockers. What do they do?” Sara asked.

“They will stop you becoming anymore of a boy than you already have, and the other thing in the bag will help you to develop as a girl.” Nicole explained to Sara as she reached into the bag and pulled out some little bottles and some needles to inject it into herself with.

“I’ve got to inject this stuff?” Sara asked with fear in her voice.

“I’ll show your mother how to do it for you.” Nicole answered.

“Couldn’t you get her a pill instead?” Samantha asked looking just as worried as Sara had when she first realised it would be her having the needles jabbed into her.

“I could, but the injections work better, and give the best results in the end.” Nicole explained her reason for getting the injectable form of the estrogens.

“I’m not sure I’ll be able to inject her with those things.” Samantha said as she pointed at the needles now stacked up in a pile on the counter top.

“You’ll do just fine Sammi, and it will help Sara feel better about herself as well.” Nicole said as she held Samantha’s hand and smiled at her. “I’ll sort you out with a name for a doctor I know that will help you and Sara get everything worked out, once I have all this other trouble squared away.” Nicole added.

“Thank you for doing all this Nikki.” Samantha smiled as she looked at Sara reading the information sheet she’d pulled out of one of the boxes of blockers. “So when will you be leaving again?” Samantha asked.

“I’ll be leaving first thing in the morning, but I need the two of you to look at some photos later.”

“What photos are those?” Samantha asked.

“I got a friend to sort out some photos of all the detectives on the case, so you can point out which one gave you the mp3 player. Then I can use him to get word to Damon Gunn for me.” Nicole explained the first part of her plan.

“What happens to us stuck up here if you don’t come back?” Samantha asked an obvious question.

“I’ll be taking one of the trials bikes back down the mountain, so if I’m not back in a week, I want you to activate this phone and head down the mountain and call this number.” Nicole said as she gave Samantha a cell phone and a card with a mobile number wrote on it. “A man called Ferret will answer, and give you instructions on what to do next.” Nicole explained.

“What will it mean if you’re not back in a week?” Samantha asked, but the look on her face said she already knew the answer.

“It means I’m dead, and you two will need to keep running, but don’t worry, Ferret will help get you to a safe place with new identities.”

“Why don’t the three of us just keep running Nikki? I’m sure they will all forget about us soon.” Samantha pleaded with Nicole.

“I can’t do that Sammi, I have to put an end to all this, so the two of you will finally be safe.” Nicole said with a sad smile as she reached up with her hand and cupped the side of Samantha’s face in her hand.

Samantha knew that Nicole was right, and she did have to put an end to all this before anyone else died, but she had a feeling that this would be the last time they would see Nicole.

Nicole showed Samantha how to give Sara the injections and then they all sat down and enjoyed a meal that Sara and Samantha had cooked. Sara kept looking at her chest all evening like she was expecting to see something happen right away.

“It’s not going to happen overnight Sara.” Nicole giggled as she saw a sad looking Sara returning from the bathroom later in the evening.

“I don’t feel any different though either.” Sara said with a pout as she dropped down into an empty seat and folded her arms looking miserable.

“Don’t look so down Sara, you already look like a girl, which is more than most kids in your situation.” Nicole pointed out.

“I know I look like a girl, but it’s all just dressing. If I take it off, I’m still going to look like a boy.” Sara whined.

“Don’t go getting undressed in front of anyone then.” Nicole said trying to sound very practical as she said it. Sara playfully slapped Nicole as she started giggling at the silly thing she said.

Samantha and Sara were sad to see the night come to an end when Nicole said she needed to get some sleep ready for her leaving again in the morning.

Nicole was forced to have a good breakfast the next morning before she packed up a few things in a back pack and then got on one of the motor bikes she had at the cabin and left.

Samantha and Sara both gave Nicole a hug and then waved as they watched Nicole leave. Samantha was left wondering if that was the last time they would ever see each other, but she couldn’t help hoping it wasn’t, and she would be part of Sara’s life for many years to come.

Nicole made it down to the run down old cabin where the other car was parked in an old barn along with some other cars Nicole had stored there. She put her stuff in one of the cars and then sorted out her disguise and ID to go with it, before she got in the car and made her way to the local airport to get on a plane and return to the city where all the trouble started and Damon Gunn lived. She turned on a burn phone and used a hands free kit to place a call to Ferret, so she could let him know she was going to deal with the problem she helped to create when she saved Samantha and Sara, or Nicolas as far as Ferret knew.

“Hey Ferret; you ready to do some work for once?” Nicole asked with some humour in her voice, which threw Ferret a little, he wasn’t use to the ice princess being friendly like this with him.

“Hi Ice. I’m always ready to work, but this is a new side for you.” Ferret said nervously. “What is it you want me to do for you?” He asked.

“I’m heading back to convince Damon Gunn to cancel the hit on Samantha Kaye, and I need your help getting as much info on him as you can find, so I can work out the best way to make him do that.” Nicole explained. “I’ll call when my plane lands, so find out as much as you can for me by then.”

“I had a feeling this was going to be your next move, after I spoke to you yesterday, so I’ve already found out quite a bit, but I’ll keep looking.” Ferret said.

“I also need you to look into a detective called Brad Lockwood. He was the one that gave the kid that mp3 player with the tracking device.” Nicole said with a growl in her voice.

“His name’s already cropped up a couple of times in some other info I came across on the Gunn family.” Ferret said.

“That’s great Ferret, thanks for all the help.” Nicole said with real meaning in it.

“I owe you my life, and the lives of my sister and niece, so this is the least I can do for you ice.” Ferret said in a tone that made it sound like he thought Nicole was mad for thanking him in the first place.

“You’ve more than repaid me for what I did Ferret, you don’t owe me anything anymore.” Nicole said with a pleading in her voice.

“I will always owe you ice, as will my sister and her daughter, so don’t ever think my debt to you will ever be repaid, and you will just have to live with that Nicole.” Ferret said using Nicole’s real name to get his point across. “I hope you realise that Athena and Viper with be expecting this move from you after what you did to save Samantha and her son.” He pointed out.

“I know that, but I can’t let anyone else die because of this, and I owe Athena and Viper anyway.” Nicole said in a cool calm voice.

“You know that it won’t end until either you or they are dead.” Ferret warned.

“This dance with them has gone on long enough, so it’s about time we found who the best was.” Nicole chuckled like it was going to be fun finding out.

Ferret could tell that Nicole had thought it all through and she was still going into this with her eyes open. “I’ll do all I can on my end to help you be the one left standing at the end.” Ferret said with a sigh.

“If the worst should happen to me Ferret, I’ve given Samantha a card with your number on it. Make sure you help them as if you were helping me, and get them to a safe place using my accounts and other assets.” Nicole made him promise.

“All your assets?” Ferret asked in shock. “That’s a lot of money.” He added.

“No, just half of them, the rest I want you to have as a bonus for all the hard work you’ve done for me over the years. That should give you an incentive to not want me to be the victor.” Nicole joked.

“As nice as it is to see this new joking side of you ice, I don’t find that very funny at all.” Ferret said with some anger in his voice. “Don’t go getting yourself dead on me.” Ferret added just before he ended the call.

Nicole was a little shocked to hear the tone in his voice. She’s always tried to keep her distance from him, but it looked like she’d still managed to make him her friend, which she found odd for saying she never had any friends as Nicolas in school, but as a killer, she was stacking them up.

Nicole got off the plane and followed a group of four other women off the plane and asked a couple of them about parts of their clothing to make it look like she was part of the group as they walked through the airport. The girls even asked if they could give Nicole a lift into the city when they got out front where a limo was waiting for them. The girls were in the city on vacation, and Nicole was happy to except the ride and make it look like she was just another member of the group.

Once at the hotel where the women were stopping, Nicole slipped away and then made her way to a twenty four hour storage place where she had a storage locker with guns, disguises, cash and ID’s. She was soon dressed in a different disguise and armed with a couple of pistols and some throwing knifes. Nicole left the storage locker looking like a secretary with brown hair up in a bun and wearing geeky looking glasses. Just the sort of woman no one would give a second look to.

Nicole went in search of an internet cafe so she could find out what Ferret had found out, and then she could work out a plan to get the contract taken off Samantha’s head.

Ferret had done a top notch job and sent Nicole a huge amount of information to look through, so she saved it all to a memory stick and left the cafe and found a room for the night where she could sit and go through it all and come up with a plan to not only help Samantha and Sara, but also get Athena and Viper off her back, but she also planned to use the two of them to help her convince Damon Gunn to remove the contract, even if they didn’t know it yet.

Nicole’s first call would be to detective Brad Lockwood to let him know she was aware of his little secret and the fact she wanted him to arrange a meeting between her and Damon Gunn. She already knew that this Brad Lockwood would use this meeting to try and kill her and that Athena and Viper would also find out about the meeting and try to spring a trap on her as well, if they were half as good as she was at her job. Nicole decided to grab a couple of hours sleep before making the call to Brad Lockwood at nine the next morning.

Ferret had already been filled in on the first part of Nicole’s plan, and he was ready to send an email to Brad that showed details of him taking bribes and also how he had hired a couple of mercenaries to kill Samantha and her son, so he could claim the bounty on her for himself.

Nicole knew the last thing this Brad Lockwood would be expecting is for her to bring the fight right back to his doorstep, but she was hoping that he would also expect her to have Samantha and Nicolas close by, not several hundred miles away safe and sound.

Detective Brad Lockwood was sat at his desk just before nine in the morning checking up on the latest news reports and possible sightings of Samantha Kaye and her wimp of a son, but it was like they had just vanished off the face of the planet since his too helpers had lost them at a shopping mall several days ago. He smiled when his cell phone started ringing.

“At last, some good news I hope.” Brad said as he pulled it out and answered the call. “Detective Lockwood?” He said when he didn’t recognise the number that was flashing up on his cell phone.

“I think we both know you don’t deserve the title of detective, Mr Lockwood.” Nicole’s digitally altered voice said to him.

“What you talking about?” Brad growled. “Who the fuck is this, and what gives you the right to speak to an officer of the law like that?” He snapped.

“I’m the one causing you so much trouble, but I must say your two thugs got close to us in that mall. Neat little trick hiding the tracker in the mp3 player by the way.” Nicole said to prove she was who she said she was.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about you crazy bitch.” Brad snapped, but Nicole could hear a slight tremble to his voice, like he wasn’t sure the call was being recorded or not.

“Check your email, all will become clear.” Nicole said smugly.

Brad logged onto his email account and then saw an email from an unknown address in his inbox, so he clicked on it and felt the colour drain from his face as he saw photos of himself talking to Damon Gunn, and also the two mercenaries he was working with to track down Samantha. There was even a copy of the invoice for the tracking device and locator. Brad knew that if anyone in his department saw these photos, they would know he had something to do with the death of the two officers at the safe house. The first hit man he hired to take the woman and the kid out had failed when he was shot in the head after killing the two officers. There was even security footage of Brad talking to the pizza guy.

“What is it you want from me?” Brad asked with fear in his voice now. “I can give you money, if you hand over all the evidence you have.”

“Keep your money scum bag.” Nicole snarled at the insult. “I want a meeting with Damon Gunn.” Nicole added.

“What makes you think Damon Gunn will want to talk with you?” Brad asked it like Nicole was insane for saying such a thing.

“I have a feeling he will be more than willing to a meeting once I’ve finished showing him it would be in his best interest, and that of his son.” Nicole said with a grin. “Can I just ask you to hold for a couple of seconds while I do something?” Nicole asked.

Nicole was sat up on the top of a building across the road from a diner where a group of men were sat around a table talking while they waited for their breakfast to arrive. Nicole was smiling as she had Seeley Gunn in her crosshairs. She first aimed the sights at the middle of Seeley’s head, but moved the crosshairs to his left ear and then pulled the trigger. Nicole watched as the window in the diner shattered as the bullet went through it and then took off a large chunk of Seeley’s left ear as he fell to the ground in pain.

“Hello, hello? What the hell was that noise?” Brad was screaming when Nicole put the ear piece back in her ear.

“That was the sound of a sniper rifle being fired. I’m sure that Damon Gunn will be willing to talk to me now, that is if he wants me to stop taking pieces out of his son.” Nicole explained what she’d done in a roundabout way.

“Are you telling me that you just shot Seeley Gunn!?” Brad screamed a little to loud and found some of the other detectives in the office looking at him.

“Yes, and he’s now missing an ear. I’ll call you in one hour and tell you were to get Damon Gunn to meet with me, and if he doesn’t show up, I will keep removing pieces of his son until he does meet me.” Nicole said just before ending the call.

Brad was wondering if this woman was lying to him, but he was soon given the proof she wasn’t when the whole precinct burst into life with officers screaming about a sniper taking shots at people in a diner and some man losing his ear. Brad was soon on his phone and making the call to Damon Gunn to set up the meeting before his son lost any more body parts.

Nicole called back one hour later like she said she would, and told Brad where she would meet Damon Gunn. Nicole just hoped Athena and Viper had ears in Damon Gunn’s network, or in the police department. Nicole was already in place and ready for the trap to be sprung when all the players arrived.

Part Nine of Eleven

Chapter Nine: The Trap

Nicole had a good view of Damon Gunn’s men getting set up to shoot her as soon as she showed in the warehouse she’d told Brad Lockwood to meet her at, but she had no plan to show up, but she did plan on taking out some of her competition. Nicole noticed that Brad Lockwood was stood with Damon, while the two guys that almost found Samantha and Sara at the mall, they were hiding close to the place they were all expecting Nicole to enter through.

Damon Gunn looked at his watch as if to let Brad know he wasn’t happy to be kept waiting by this woman responsible for shooting his son. He was just about to ask Brad where she was when they heard a phone ring. Brad worked out where the cell phone was, and he picked it up and answered it.

“This wasn’t the sort of meeting I thought you wanted, you bitch!” Brad snarled into the phone just before Damon snatched the cell phone out of his hand.

“Are you the one who shot my son?” Damon asked in a calm voice.

“Yes, and I will keep shooting him if you don’t cancel the contract you have for the death of Samantha Kaye and her son.” Nicole said sounding just as calm.

“You dare shoot my son and then order me to do as you say?” Damon asked as he tried to remain calm, but Nicole could see he was getting red faced as he tried to keep that calm in his voice.

Nicole smiled an evil smile as she watched two figures moving among the machines and crates stored in the warehouse as they started taking out Damon’s and Brad’s men. Nicole knew the two figures to be Athena and Viper. The two of them had met while on a mission going after the same target. Nicole heard through the grape vine that they had killed the target and then got married right after.

‘They do work well together.’ Nicole thought to herself as she watched how quickly they worked their way around Damon’s and the two men Brad had working for him.

Both Athena and Viper were experts with knives and guns, just like Nicole was. Nicole had had run ins with both of them in the past, and she had left them both with scars to prove it, which is the reason for the two of them now taking out Damon’s men so they could spring their own trap on the ice princess when she showed up, but Nicole had already planned for this and was waiting for them to turn up so she could kill the two of them and then take out Damon and Brad.

Nicole took aim with her rifle and smiled as she saw the scar across Viper’s left cheek. The scar that she’d left him with after a knife fight that Nicole came out on top of because Viper thought he was the better fighter because he was a man, a mistake that he was now reminded of every time he looked in the mirror, or the woman he loved looked at him, just like he was reminded of the ice princess every time he looked at his wife, Athena. Nicole had slashed Athena down her right cheek, as a reminder to her that the ice princess was the better assassin.

‘Till death do you part, Viper.’ Nicole thought as she squeezed the trigger and a shot rang out and blew Viper’s head apart.

Nicole turned the sniper sight on Athena just in time to see her look over and watch her husband fall to the ground dead. Nicole took aim at Athena, but so did Brad when he heard a woman scream out the name ‘Viper’. Brad taking a shot at Athena caused Nicole to miss due to Athena moving because of Brad’s poor aim.

Athena made her escape in a shower of gunfire, and Nicole couldn’t get a clean shot, so she had to let her get away for now. Athena looked like she’d been hit by one of the shots Brad had fired, so she’d be looking for a doctor before she returned.

Brad Lockwood and Damon Gunn had taken cover behind some large crates, both of them with guns drawn ready for action. Nicole looked through the sniper scope on her rifle, she saw that Damon still had the cell phone in his hand, so she redialled the number and waited for him to answer.

“See what you get when you try fucking with me bitch!” Damon screamed into the phone like it was one of his men that just took Viper’s head of.

“You have such a mouth on you Mr Gunn, and I think you should apologise for calling me a bitch, or it will come back to bite you in the ass.” Nicole warned as she took aim at Damon’s backside.

“Fuck you, you crazy Bitch.” Was Damon’s reply.

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Nicole said in a calm voice as she squeezed the trigger and clipped Damon’s ass with a bullet.

Damon screamed out in pain as the bullet grazed his backside, sending a searing pain through it. “Fuck! The bitch just shot me!” He grabbed his ass where the bullet hit, as he hopped around in pain.

“Unless you want her to take another shot in someplace that hurts even more, get down.” Brad said as he pulled Damon behind the crates out of Nicole’s sight.

Nicole called the cell phone again, but it was Brad who answered it this time. “What is you want lady?” Brad asked, not wanting to risk calling her a bitch, like Damon made the mistake of doing twice.

“I want Damon to make the call and cancel the contract on Samantha Kaye. Tell him to make the call and cancel the contract now, or I kill you both.” Nicole said with anger edging her voice to let Brad know she wasn’t joking.

“Call and cancel the damn contract on that woman and her kid before we both end up dead.” Brad said as he looked at Damon Gunn, still rolling around on the floor in pain.

“That bitch shot me, why should I do anything she wants?” Damon snarled.

“She could have taken your head off you dumb shit! She grazed your ass on purpose, now make the damn call and cancel the contract already!” Brad said as he threw Damon his own cell phone to make the call. Brad had no doubt that the woman on the other end of the phone was true to her word, and even now she was aiming her sights at them, ready to fire.

Damon winced as he picked up the cell phone and made the call to the dealer that set up the contract for Damon. It took him five minutes to go through all the details with the dealer and get the contract cancelled off.

Nicole placed a call to Ferret using another phone to make sure the contract had been cancelled. “Ferret, Damon Gunn should be cancelling the contract as we speak.” Nicole said when she heard Ferret’s voice on the other end.

“I’ll check up and make sure he has cancelled it then.” Ferret said as Nicole heard him tapping away on a keyboard. “Have Athena and Viper shown up yet?” Ferret asked as he worked.

“Viper’s dead, but Athena got away.” Nicole said angrily. “It looked like she was injured though as she ran away.” Nicole added on a positive note.

“If she wasn’t pissed off with you before ice, I bet she is now you shot her husband.” Ferret said with an evil chuckle. “Hold on, something’s happening.” Ferret added.

     “What is it?” Nicole asked.

“The contract has just been cancelled, so no one else will be hurt.” Ferret said with a sigh.

“That’s good then, I can end this now.” Nicole said as she got Damon Gunn in her sights again. “I need you to send that file on Brad Lockwood to the police department he works at, so they know the reason for his death.” Nicole added just before ending the call with him.

“Okay, the damn contract is cancelled, now call that crazy bitch and get her to stop sh...” Was all Damon said before there was a thud as the side of his head exploded and he fell to the ground in a heap.

Brad looked on in horror as he saw Damon’s head explode, then he was more worried about himself as he started to run, but it was pointless as Nicole already had him in her sights as she pulled the trigger and watched him fall to the ground with a large hole where his face use to be.

Nicole calmly packed up her rifle and then left the area just as she heard the sirens to let her know the police were about to arrive. Nicole had one more stop to make before she left the city. She still needed to pay a visit to Seeley Gunn and finish what she started at the diner.

Nicole had found out the name of the hospital Seeley Gunn had been taken too and she was now walking down a hallway towards the room he was resting in. Nicole had left him with no hearing in what was left of his left ear after shooting most of it off at the diner.

She found the room and was glad to see there were no police guarding the doorway. Nicole walked into the room and saw Seeley asleep in the hospital bed. Nicole had no sympathy for a man that would try to use a child for a shield trying to save his own life.

Nicole pulled out a syringe with nothing but air in it and stuck it into his arm before pushing down the plunger and infecting the air into his arm. Nicole left the room and was well gone before Seeley died of a heart attack due to air pockets in his blood stream.

Now that Nicole had taken care of the contract and the reason for Samantha to give evidence, she was ready to head back to the cabin and help Samantha and Sara settle down in a new life. Nicole didn’t think it safe for either of them to resume their old life, and this way Sara could just have a life as a girl.

Nicole was soon packed up with all her weapons back in the storage locker, she was in a new disguise and making her way to the airport and getting on a plane and heading back to the cabin.

Samantha and Sara both burst out of the cabin when they heard the sound of a motorbike getting louder. They were both hoping it was Nicole returning, but neither of them had seen another person since Nicole brought them to the cabin, so they were hoping for the best.

Nicole came around a bend in the dirt track road and saw Samantha and Sara both stood on the porch waiting for her. Nicole had only just dropped the side stand on the bike when she was being hugged by the two of them.

“Is it over? Did you get him to cancel the contract?” Samantha asked with hope in her voice.

“Yes, the contract has been cancelled, and I also took care of his son, so you have no reason to give evidence now either.” Nicole said as she made her way into the cabin with the back pack still on her back.

“You took care of everything?” Samantha asked as she followed close behind with Sara walking next to her.

“Yes, everything is good for you again, but I think it best for you and Sara to start a new life, well you anyway Sammi. I can have new ID’s sorted out for you both, and I’ll even make sure Sara get’s all the help she needs with her transition.” Nicole explained.

“What about money and me looking for work, will the new ID be any good for that?” Samantha asked.

“Don’t worry about the ID’s. You’ll be able to pass the most invasive of checks, but you won’t have to worry about needing to work.” Nicole started to explain. “I’ve earned a lot of money doing what I do, and I want to give you some of it to help get the two of you set up in this new life.”

“I’ll accept your offer, but only if you remain part of our lives Nikki.” Samantha said.

“We’ve talked about this Sammi.” Nicole growled. “I can’t just settle down like you and Sara, people will come looking for me.” Nicole explained.

“I think you’re an expert at disappearing, and this is just some excuse because you’re scared of having feeling for people again!” Samantha snapped as she got up and left the cabin to take a walk and cool off before she faced Nicole again.

“Is what mum says true? Are you just scared about being with us?” Sara asked in a hurt tone. “We love having you in our lives Nikki, and we don’t care what you’ve been doing all this time.” Sara pleaded.

Nicole didn’t have an answer for Sara, but she did have to wonder if she was just using her job as a reason to walk away again when they were both safely in a new city and settled down with Sara seeing a doctor about her transition. She was also still worried about Athena and the fact she’d left her alive. Nicole knew that Athena would be coming after her harder than ever now, so she could avenge her dead husband.

“I will need to sort out a few things, but I think it would be nice to settle down and watch you grow up to be a pretty young woman.” Nicole finally said as she decided to make her mind up and give it a go, but only once Athena was dead. “I’ll go and find your mother and let her know the good news.” Nicole added as she got up off the stool she’d sat on at the breakfast bar and left the cabin to go find Samantha.

Samantha was sat on a large bolder that looked out over the valley below the mountain side where the cabin was, when Nicole got outside and found her. Samantha looked over her shoulder when she heard someone walking toward her and she went back to looking out over the valley when she saw it was Nicole.

“Come out to tell me more reasons for you not hanging around?” Samantha asked as she kept looking anywhere except at Nicole who was now sat next to her on the bolder.

“I could, or I could just say that I want to play a bigger part in Sara, and your life again, but I will need to take care of something before I can.” Nicole said.

“What is it you need to sort out?”

“I’ve had a couple of assassin’s tracking me for some time, and I’ve just managed to kill one of them, but his partner will be coming at me even harder now.” Nicole explained.

“They were a couple?” Samantha asked.

“Yes, but not when I first met them. She won’t stop coming at me until I’m dead, unless I kill her first.” Nicole said as she let Samantha cuddle up to her.

“Just make sure it’s her being put in the ground.” Samantha sighed as she rested her head on Nicole’s shoulder.

“That’s always top of my list.” Nicole laughed.

Nicole and Samantha returned to the cabin and found a happy looking Sara in the kitchen humming and singing as she busied herself sorting out dinner for them all. Samantha joined her in the kitchen helping to sort out dinner, while Nicole started sorting out what she needed to do, so she could retire and spend her time with them.

They all enjoyed a wonderful meal before settling down to have a chat about what she’d done while away, and also what they would all be doing when they finally found a place to settle down. Sara finally lost her battle against sleep and she was fast asleep with her head resting on Nicole’s knee.

“You’ve made her so happy Nikki.” Samantha whispered as she looked at Nicole stroking Sara’s hair.

“I still find it hard to believe that you had my child.” Nicole said as she loved the thought that she helped to bring Sara into the world.

“I’m glad I made love to you that night, I just wish things had turned out differently.” Samantha sighed.

“We both knew it was never going to end well once Jason saw us together in your bed.” Nicole pointed out. “And he would never have let the two of us be together.” Nicole added.

“Do you ever regret killing him?” Samantha asked.

“No, never.” Nicole said looking very serious.

Nicole worked out everything she’d need to do over the next couple of days, while she just hung out with Sara and Samantha, but she knew that she needed to go down the mountain and make contact with Ferret, and get the photos to him for the new ID’s for them all.

Samantha had said that she wanted Nicole to play Sara’s mother because the two of them looked more like each other than she and Sara did now. Samantha still had the brown hair cut short, where as Nicole had short black hair and the same eyes as Sara, so they looked like mother and daughter.

Nicole was going to take the 4x4 down the mountain and do some shopping while she was down there, and she even agreed to take Sara with her, as no one was going to be looking for a mother and daughter. Samantha waved them off and then went back into the house to do some cleaning up while they were gone.

Sara smiled all the way down the mountain and then she looked excited as they switched to one of the cars and made their way into the city to do some shopping and also let Nicole call and speak to Ferret.

“I need to make a call while we drive into the city.” Nicole said as she but the blue ear piece in and dialled Ferret.

“Hi Ice, I was beginning to worry I wasn’t going to hear from you again.” Ferret said after answering the call. “I’ve still got nothing on Athena, it’s like she’s just vanished off the face of the planet. Are you sure that bullet you said she got hit with at the warehouse didn’t kill her?” Ferret asked.

“I’m sorry for being quiet the past couple of days, but I just wanted to unwind from the job. I doubt she would have died from that injury, she looked to be moving pretty fast, even with a gunshot to the arm.” Nicole explained.

“I’ll keep looking for her, but she’s almost as good as you when it comes to not leaving a trail.” Ferret pointed out the problems he was having.

“I need you to sort out something else for me as well. I’ll be sending you some photos; I need you to make up a full set of ID’s for three people.” Nicole told him. “I’m going to be retiring Ferret, and I want to thank you for all the help over the years.”

“I’d like to say I’m surprised, but I had a feeling this was coming from the day you called and said you were taking this job involving Samantha Kaye.” Ferret said with a huff in his voice. “So you’re looking for a good set of ID’s then, not the normal quick look set like you normally asked for?”

“You’ve got it Ferret. I need a full legend building for the three of us, but I’ll email all the information over to you later today. I’ll sort you out with enough money to keep you in computer parts for some time to come, for sorting out all this.” Nicole promised.

“The sort of legend you’re looking for isn’t going to be cheap anyway.” Ferret warned.

“I know, but it’s going to be worth it.” Nicole smiled as she looked over at Sara sat next to her looking out the window and enjoying the time away from the cabin.

“I’m happy that the ice princess finally found a reason to thaw out.” Ferret chuckled.

“So am I Ferret.” Nicole giggled at his joke. “I’ll speak to you later then. Bye.” Nicole added just before she ended the call.

“I can’t believe you’re actually giving all this up to spend time with mum and me.” Sara smiled as she looked at Nicole.

“I finally have a reason to give all this up; I just wished I’d known about you sooner.” Nicole admitted as she reached over and took hold of Sara’s hand and looked at her with a sad smile.

“You’re with me now, that has to count for something, and don’t forget the whole keeping us alive thing as well.” Sara grinned.

“I do have to question whether saving you was the right thing to do or not.” Nicole frowned, but was soon giggling as a pouting Sara started slapping her arm.

“I know you don’t mean that Aunty Nikki.” Sara pouted some more.

“You know that I’d kill to keep you and your mother alive.” Nicole said looking serious.

“I know that, and you have killed people for us.” Sara smirked.

“I hope that is all behind me now, the last thing we need is a trail of dead bodies leading to our doorstep.” Nicole said with a raised eyebrow.

“We don’t technically have a doorstep yet though.” Sara pointed out with as giggle.

“Let’s get the new ID’s sorted out, and then we can work on finding a doorstep to not leave a trail of dead bodies leading to.” Nicole grinned.

“Sounds like a fun idea.” Sara giggled.

Nicole was soon pulling into the grounds of the local community college, so Nicole could send the files to Ferret, and get the ID’s sorted out. Sara waited in the car, due to her not looking old enough to be at college, and it could tip of the wrong people.

“I’ll be as quick as I can. Don’t leave the car, and don’t unlock it for anyone but me.” Nicole warned just before she got out the car and went to the computer lab.

Sara was still sat in the car looking at all the people walking around, when Nicole got back.

“Did you get it all sorted out?” Sara asked as Nicole got in and started the car.

“Yes, I sent the files and Ferret will be working on them as we speak.” Nicole said with confidence as she drove them to the nearest mall.

“Have you told this Ferret about me being a girl now?” Sara asked.

“No, but it won’t be hard for him to work out once he sees the photos and reads the information in the file I sent him.” Nicole shrugged. “He’s really brainy and can work things out pretty quick.” Nicole added with a grin.

Sara started grinning and clapping her hands together when she saw where Nicole was talking them. Nicole was soon parking the car in one of the mall parking lots and then she got out and helped Sara out the car before they entered the mall and started window shopping.

It didn’t take long for Sara to get a little bored with just looking in the windows, and she soon wanted to try some things on.

“Please let me try this dress on?” Sara pleaded.

“I wish you could Sara, but someone might realise that you’re not what you appear to be just yet.” Nicole had to remind her.

Sara couldn’t have looked more hurt if Nicole had just slapped her across the face when she realised what Nicole was getting at. Sara just threw the dress at Nicole and ran from the shop.

Nicole threw the dress over a rail and then ran out after Sara. Luckily Sara had run out to the car and was sobbing when Nicole caught up to her.

“I’m sorry I upset you Sara, but the last thing we need is some customer reporting you for being a boy in a ladies changing room.” Nicole tried to explain.

“I’m not a boy.” Sara sobbed.

“I know you’re not, but other people won’t see it that way if they saw you undressed in a changing room. One day you will be able to try on as many dresses and other clothes, but until then we need to be careful.” Nicole said as she pulled Sara into a hug.

Nicole could see that Sara was to upset with her to carry on shopping, so they got back in the car and made their way back to the old barn behind the run down old cabin. They were soon on the dirt track heading back up to the cabin at the top of the mountain where Samantha was waiting for their return.

Samantha was stood out on the porch when Nicole pulled up outside the cabin. Nicole was just opening the door on the 4x when it slammed shut again due to a bullet impacting the driver’s side door window. Lucky for Nicole, the 4x4 was fitted with bullet resistant glass, so she was unhurt.

“Stay in the truck and keep your head down!” Nicole snapped as she pulled a pistol out the glove box and then jumped out of the 4x4 and ran to protect Samantha who was out in the open on the porch looking worried for her daughter. “Get in the cabin Sammi!” Nicole screamed as she ran up the steps.

Nicole was just a foot away from Samantha when she felt a white hot pain shoot through her shoulder as she was shot. The bullet went straight through Nicole and then hit Samantha in the chest, knocking her backwards into the wall of the cabin before she fell to the ground in a heap.

     “Mum!” Sara screamed.

Nicole looked around just in time to see Sara getting out the truck and Athena walking out of the forest on the other side of the open space in front of the cabin. Nicole knew it was all over as she had dropped her gun when Athena shot her through the shoulder.

“Run Sara, run as fast as you can!” Nicole shouted as she fell to her knees waiting for Athena to finish the job and claim her victory.

Chapter Ten: Rest in peace

Previously...

Samantha was stood out on the porch when Nicole pulled up outside the cabin. Nicole was just opening the door on the 4x4 when it slammed shut again due to a bullet impacting the driver’s side door window.

And now the story continues.....

Athena was so focused on Nicole that she was taking no notice of what Sara was doing. “You killed the man I loved you bitch!” Athena spat out with pure rage in her eyes. “I’m going to kill you so very slowly.” She added with a sick pleasure in her voice.

“At least I got to see Viper’s head explode before you kill me.” Nicole said, hoping to goat Athena into killing her fast.

“I know what you’re trying to do ice princess, but it won’t work.” Athena growled. “I’m going to ma...” Was all Athena got out before a loud bang rang out and Athena started coughing up blood as she grabbed her throat and looked over to where the shot had come from.

Nicole looked over as well and she saw Sara stood with the gun gripped in both hands with smoke snaking its way out the barrel from the shot she’d just fired at Athena.

Athena took a couple of steps towards Sara before she fell to her knees and then she fell to the ground as her eyes rolled up into her head. She was finally dead.

Sara looked shocked for a second or two before she looked at the gun in her hands and then dropped it to the ground like it had just burned her fingers. Sara then ran over to where she saw Nicole crawling towards Samantha’s body slumped on the ground.

Nicole turned to face Samantha and then she crawled over to where her body was slumped on the ground unmoving. “Sammi, Sammi?” Nicole winced as she tried to turn her over, but with one arm out of use due to Athena shooting her. Sara was soon at her side helping to get Samantha laid out on the porch, so they could make sure she was alright.

“Mummy, mummy.” Sara sobbed as she looked at the blood soaking the front of the shirt Samantha was wearing. “Do something Nikki! Save her, please save her.” Sara screamed as she tried to stop the bleeding.

Nicole knew from the blood pouring out of the hole, that it was just a matter of time before Samantha was gone for good, and nothing she could do would make any difference.

“Sara? I need you to be brave for me, and do whatever Nikki tells you.” Samantha croaked out before she winced in pain.

“You’ll be fine mummy; Nikki will make it all better.” Sara argued.

“Nikki?” Samantha asked as she reached up with her hand blindly searching for Nicole’s.

“I’m here Sammi.” Nicole said as she moved a little closer so Samantha could see her, and Nicole took hold of her hand to let her know she wasn’t alone.

“I need you to promise me something Nikki.” Samantha said with pain in her voice.

“I’ll promise you anything Sammi.” Nicole said as she found it hard to keep her emotions under control.

“I need you to be a mother to Sara for me, and please help her fulfil her dream to become a beautiful woman, just like you.” Samantha forced a smile.

“I promise that Sara will be well looked after Sammi.” Nicole replied.

“You can’t leave me mummy, I need you.” Sara sobbed as she held her mother’s other hand.

“Nikki will be your mother from now on, but I’ll live on in your heart, and I’ll be keeping an eye on you from up in heaven.” Samantha winced.

“I want you as my mother.” Sara whined.

“I can’t do that, but I know that Nikki will be a good mother to you. Now let me finish what I have to say.” Samantha said as she felt herself getting weaker due to the blood loss, but at least the pain had stopped, she just felt num now. “Can you do me one last favour Nikki?”

“I will if I can.” Nicole said as she moved in closer, due to Samantha’s voice becoming nothing more than a whisper.

“Can I kiss you one last time before I die?” Samantha asked with a smile.

Nicole smiled back as she moved her lips closer to Samantha’s and then they touched. Nicole thought they felt just as soft as the night they made love, and Sara was conceived.

“Thank you Nikki.” Samantha whispered as she licked her lips to taste Nicole still on them. “Sara, Nicole? I love you both...” Samantha’s eyes closed and her head just fell to the side.

“Mummy, mummy?!” Sara said as she started to shake Samantha like she was just asleep, and would wake if Sara shook her hard enough.

“Sara, stop doing that, she’s gone.” Nicole said as she reached out to try and stop Sara shaking Samantha’s now dead body.

Sara slapped Nicole’s hand away, but jerked Nicole’s shoulder where she’d been shot, making Nicole scream out in pain.

“I’m sorry Nikki.” Sara sobbed as she remembered Nicole had been shot at the same time her mother was. “I’m sorry.” She sobbed as she fell into Nicole’s arms unable to cope with the pain she was feeling, Sara just passed out in her arms.

Nicole had managed to get Sara into the bedroom and then into the bed before she went out to the kitchen and got the first aid kit out and did the best she could with her shoulder, before she set about burying the bodies. Athena had aimed well when she shot Nicole, the bullet had gone through her body, but missed all the bones and vital organs in that part of her body, so other than the bleeding and pain, she knew she’d live.

“I’ll get you taken care of first.” Nicole said as she stood over the lifeless body of Athena.

Nicole staggered over to the tractor that she used to do any construction work around the cabin. She used the arm on the tractor to dig two holes. The first hole was just in an open spot away from the cabin. Nicole then dropped Athena into it and filled it in to be forgotten about with no landmarks or headstone. The second hole was just next to the cabin, and she took more care with this one. She grabbed some sheets and wrapped Samantha’s body in them and then used some thread to sow them closed around Samantha’s body. Nicole then used some rope to help her lift and lower Samantha’s body into the hole. She stopped at this point, so she could wait for Sara to wake and join her, so they could then lay Samantha to rest in a beautiful spot overlooking the valley and forest below.

“Damn! I’ve made my shoulder bleed again.” Nicole said to herself when she saw the blood stain on her shirt. Nicole knew it was going to take time and rest to heal her shoulder, but she wasn’t sure what time to rest she’d have once Sara woke.

Nicole went back into the cabin and then removed her shirt and the dressing, so she could replace it with a fresh one. Nicole was sat on a stool when she saw Sara enter the kitchen looking half asleep until she saw Nicole, and she was fully awake and welling up with tears again.

Sara had woken, thinking she’d had a nightmare where her mother was shot, and then she’d shot the woman that did it. Sara had realised that it wasn’t a dream when she walked into the kitchen and saw Nicole sat at the breakfast bar trying to clean out the hole in her shoulder.

“I wasn’t dreaming was I? My mother is really dead isn’t she?” Sara asked with tears running down her cheeks.

“I’m afraid so.” Nicole said as she slipped off the stool and walked over to where Sara was stood sobbing. Nicole was still not wearing a top, or a bra, so Sara got a good look at Nicole’s breasts. “I’m sorry Sara.” Nicole added as she pulled Sara close to her and then started sobbing herself.

“What can I do to help you Nikki?” Sara asked after they finally stopped hugging and crying.

Sara stepped back to look at the hole in Nicole’s shoulder, but couldn’t help looking at Nicole’s perfect looking breasts. Sara lifted her hand to her own chest and could only the feel the padding.

“You’ll have real ones of your own soon.” Nicole said when she saw what Sara was looking at as she reached up to her own breasts.

“I’m sorry for looking at them Nikki, but they just look so real.” Sara blushed.

“They are real!” Nicole pouted as she thrust her chest out, but regretted it when it made her shoulder protest. “Ouch!” Nicole added as she lifted her hand to her shoulder and winced.

“Serves you right for flashing them at me.” Sara giggled, but she was soon putting her hand up to her mouth and looked like she was about to start crying again. “I’m sorry; I shouldn’t be laughing now mother is dead.” Sara mumbled through her hand.

“I know that your mother wouldn’t want you to stop laughing and smiling. It’s just how you cope with the pain some times.” Nicole explained as she pulled Sara into another hug.

“I think you just like teasing me with your breasts.” Sara giggled some more when she felt them pressing into her own chest. “It must feel amazing to have your own breast though.” Sara added.

“It feels natural to have them there, but I know what you mean.” Nicole winced some more.

“We better get you patched up before it gets infected.” Sara said as she led Nicole back over to the breakfast bar and set about doing what Nicole told her.

Sara was soon placing Nicole’s arm in a sling to stop her using it, in some hopes of helping it to start healing. Sara had tried to talk Nicole into going to a hospital, but Nicole had said no, as she’d been shot, and they have to report any gun shots.

“I have your mother all set to be buried, but I thought you might like to say a few words first.” Nicole said as she led Sara out the cabin and over to the side of the house where she’d dug the hole and placed Samantha’s body in it.

“Can’t we do it properly? This doesn’t feel right.” Sara said as she looked down into the hole where she could see the wrapped figure of her dead mother.

“We will buy a proper headstone for her Sara, but this is the best place, and your mother did love the view from this spot.” Nicole smiled as she looked out and took in the beauty of it for the first time. “Trying to bury her anyplace else would just raise too many questions, and you would end up in a foster home.”

“But I have you to take care of me.” Sara pointed out.

“I’m not your father anymore Sara, he died, so this is the only way we can do it, and we’ll come back to visit her all the time. I promise you that.” Nicole said as she wrapped her good arm around Sara.

“Will you be my mother then instead?” Sara asked with a tear in her eye.

“I’ll try Sara, but I don’t think I could ever replace Samantha.” Nicole said with sorrow in her voice.

“I’d never ask you to replace her Nikki, but I’m sure you will be just as good in your own way.” Sara said with a sigh as she rested her head on Nicole’s good shoulder.

“Do you want to say a few words before I fill in the hole?” Nicole asked as she saw that the light was fading.

“How can I sum up twelve years with someone as wonderful as my mother?” Sara asked with tears rolling down her cheeks.

“You don’t have to Sara; this is just so you can say a proper goodbye until you can be together again.” Nicole stepped back to give Sara some time alone at her mother’s grave side.

Nicole was sat on the porch steps ten minutes later when Sara walked around from the side of the cabin and sat down next to her wiping tears away.

“Is it okay for me to put the soil back in the hole now?” Nicole asked as she went to stand, but winced from the pain in her shoulder where Athena shot her.

“You need to rest Nikki, let me sort out the hole.” Sara said as she stopped Nicole from getting up, while she got to her feet and made her way over to the tractor.

Sara spent ten minutes trying to work out how to get the arm on the tractor to move before Nicole made her way over and talked Sara through the right way to make it work. Sara was soon filling in the hole while Nicole went back to sitting on the porch steps and waiting for Sara to finish.

“All done?” Nicole asked looking tired as she fought to stay awake while looking up at Sara stood over her.

“Yes, she’s resting in peace now.” Sara said as she helped Nicole get to her feet. “Now we better get you to bed, you’re not looking to good.” Sara added looking worried.

“I’ll be fine once I’ve had some sleep.” Nicole said as she let Sara help her into the house, and then to get ready for bed. “I’m the one that should be doing this for you.” Nicole added as Sara tucked her in.

“Just worry about getting better again, and then you can start looking after me.” Sara smiled. She was worried about Nicole, and didn’t like the way Nicole looked when she left her.

Sara slept on the couch in the living area on and off all night, but she kept going to check on Nicole. Sara was getting more and more worried as she saw that Nicole was running a fever. Her worry turned into a full panic the next morning when she couldn’t get Nicole to wake up, and she was burning up.

“Please wake up Nikki.” Sara pleaded with Nicole as she kept trying to wake her, but Nicole wouldn’t wake.

Sara knew she needed to get Nicole a doctor, but how did she get Nicole down the mountain, or a doctor up to her. Then Sara remembered the card with Ferret’s phone number on it that Nicole had given her mother a couple of days ago, just before she went on the mission to take care of Damon Gunn and the contract on their lives.

The next problem was getting to a place where she could get a signal and make the call. Sara remembered seeing a quad bike in the garage where Nicole had taken the trials bike from, so she got dressed for a trip down the mountain and then gave herself a crash course in how to ride it and set off down the mountain to make a call and hopefully get Nicole some help.

Sara found it much easier than she thought it was going to be, and she made good time and soon found herself down at the old barn where Nicole had stored the car when they first got to the place, and when she’d gone down the mountain the day before.

“Please have a signal, please, please, please.” Sara said as she pulled out the phone and turned it on. “Yes!” Sara shouted as she saw she had a couple of bars to work with, and the phone was fully charged. Sara punched in the number that was on the card and then waited for someone to answer the other end.v

“Hi ice, I’m glad you called, I have to warn you that Athena was on the same plane as you, and may know where you’re stopping.” Ferret warned before Sara could get a word in.

     “Is this Ferret?” Sara asked.

“Who’s asking, and what are you doing calling me on this number?” Ferret asked sounding nervous.

“My mum’s dead, and Nikki got shot and won’t wake up now. Please help me, she needs a doctor.” Sara pleaded.

     “Is this Nicolas?” Ferret asked.

“I was, but I’m Sara now.” She sobbed into the phone. “Please come and help Nikki.”

Ferret knew that Nicole was working up a cover for Nicolas as a girl called Sara, but he had no idea that it wasn’t going to just be a short term thing yet. The information in the file Nicole sent was a little vague on details, other than what Ferret needed to know.

“Okay Sara, I need to know where you are and what happened.” Ferret said trying to keep Sara calm.

Sara explained as quick as she could about how Athena showed up and tried to shoot Nicole while she was sat in the 4x4 up at the cabin, but then took another shot as Nicole tried to get Samantha under cover, but the bullet went through Nicole and then shot her mother.

Ferret had managed to track Sara’s cell signal while she explained what had happened, and how she didn’t think it was safe to move Nicole.

“I know where you are Sara, now head back up to Nicole and I’ll be with you as soon as I can with help.” Ferret said as he then went on to give Sara some pointers on how to help Nicole as much as she could until he got there.

“Please come as fast as you can Ferret.” Sara pleaded before ending the call and then making her way back up the mountain to do what Ferret said as she tried to keep Nicole’s temperature down.

Sara made it back up to the cabin and ran in to check on Nicole, and she had to get some cold cloths and wipe Nicole down as she was burning up even more, but she looked like she was shivering at the same time. Sara did what Ferret told her, but none of it looked to be helping Nicole get any better.

“Where are you Ferret?” Sara said in a panic as she saw the time getting on and there was still no sign of this man, and the help he promised to bring.

Sara was just beginning to think she’d be making a second grave for Nicole when she heard the roar of an engine and then she saw a 4x4 roll around the bend in the road and pull up to a stop outside the cabin. Sara ran out onto the porch without even thinking to check and make sure this person was Ferret or not.

A man got out the driver’s side door and then ran around to the passenger side and helped a woman get out, and then he helped a young girl of around seven or eight to get out the back seat before the woman ran to the back and retrieved a large medical looking bag from the trunk area.

“You’re Sara?” The man asked looking a little confused, as he was expecting to see a boy in a dress, not a young woman that looked to be around the age of fourteen or fifteen instead of her real age of twelve.

Sara nodded just before she asked. “You Ferret?”

“Yes, and this is my sister April, and her daughter Maggie.” Ferret said as he pointed at the woman and then looked at the girl at his side holding his hand and looking a little shy around Sara.

“Talk later you two!” April snapped. “Where’s Nicole?” She asked as she looked at Sara while making her way over with the large bag.

“She’s in here.” Sara said as she led the way to the bedroom where she’d left Nicole sleeping in the bed.

“Sara? I need you to keep an eye on Maggie for me. Dan? You will have to help me in here.” April said as she sprang into action while Sara led the little girl out the room back into the living area.

“Can I have a drink please?” Maggie asked as she looked up at Sara nervously.

“Sure, coke alright for you?” Sara asked with a smile.

Maggie smiled back and nodded her head up and down to say that would be fine, so Sara walked them into the kitchen and then got a couple of cans out the fridge and sat down in the living area to enjoy it, or try to as she waited to see if April could save Nicole’s life.

“How old are you Maggie?” Sara asked as she played with the can in her hand, while trying to take her mind off what April and Dan (Ferret) were doing in the other room.

“I’ll be eight in two months.” Maggie said between sips of her coke. “Uncle Dan told me you were a boy, but I think he must have made a mistake.” Maggie added with a puzzled look.

“I was a boy, but I should have been born a girl, so I’m working to fix the problem.” Sara tried to explain.

“I think you make a pretty girl.” Maggie smiled as she didn’t seem too bothered about what Sara just told her.

     “Thank you Maggie.” Sara smiled.

“Can you paint my nails to look like yours?” Maggie asked when she saw the pink sparkly colour Sara’s were painted.

“I’d love to.” Sara grinned as she grabbed her nail art kit and set to work making Maggie’s nails look just as pretty as she thought hers were.

Sara was glad to be doing something that distracted her from what was happening in the other room. Sara was having trouble dealing with the loss of her mother, and to lose Nicole so soon after finding out she had another parent was just too much, and Sara knew she wouldn’t be able to deal with that as well.

Sara had finished doing Maggie’s nails and had settled on the couch with Maggie asleep next to her with her head resting on Sara’s lap. Sara had just started to doze off herself when she heard April and Dan talking to each other as they came out the bedroom, even though it sounded more like an argument.

“We can’t take her to a hospital sis” Dan said in an angry voice that sounded like it wasn’t the first time he’d said it to her. “She was shot, and they have to report all gunshots.” Dan reminded his sister.

“I know all that, but she’s lost a lot of blood, and we have no idea what type she is, so unless you can come up with a blood relative, or you happen to know her blood type?” April asked heavy with sarcasm.

“As far as I know, she doesn’t have any family, and she never told me her blood type either.” Dan said sounding angry with himself for not finding out more about Nicole over the years they had known each other.

“How’s Nicole doing, will she be alright?” Sara asked as she woke up fully and turned her head to look at the two of them better.

“I’ve done all I can, but I’m worried about all the blood she’s lost.” April explained as she walked around and checked on Maggie who was still asleep.

“You can have some of mine.” Sara offered.

“We don’t know her blood type, and you’d have to be a blood relative for me to risk using someone else’s blood.” April said as she sat on the edge of the couch and took hold of Sara’s hand when she saw the worry in her eyes.

“We are blood relatives.” Sara said looking a little more hopeful that she could help Nicole.

“You are?” Dan asked looking puzzled. “Nicole told me she didn’t have any family left.” Dan added.

“What relation is Nicole to you Sara?” April asked. “Are you sure you’re related by blood?” April pushed.

Sara looked at April and Dan nervously for a couple of seconds, not sure if she should tell them the truth, she decided that having Nicole alive and mad with her would be better than the alternative, so with a deep breath Sara started to explain.

“Nicole was my father, or she was the boy that slept with my mother...” Sara trailed off as she let her news sink in as April and Dan just looked at her.

“She was your father?” Dan asked after just looking at Sara for a couple of seconds to see if she was being serious or not. “As in she was once a man?” He added like he couldn’t believe it.

“Yes, now can we help her, please?” Sara asked, not wanting to get into the story of how her father was now a female assassin dying in the other room.

“Let go get some blood out of you then.” April said as she got to her feet and then moved Maggie’s head off Sara’s lap, so she could get her hooked up and take some blood.

Part Eleven of Eleven

Chapter Eleven: Truth or dare

Nicole woke and knew right away that something was wrong because she felt weak and she ached all over, which told Nicole that she’d been in bed for some time. Nicole went to sit up, but was soon being stopped by Sara.

“Don’t move Nikki, you’ve been very ill.” Sara said as she appeared at the side of the bed and stopped Nicole.

“How long have I been asleep, and how did I get an IV in my arm?” Nicole asked when she saw the drip and the tube going into her arm. She looked around to make sure she was still at the cabin and not in a hospital.

“I’m sorry Nikki, but I had to call for some help when I couldn’t get you to wake up a couple of days ago.” Sara started to explain just as April walked into the bedroom.

“Who did you call?” Nicole asked with some anger in her voice.

“Don’t get upset with Sara, Nikki, she saved your life.” April said cutting Nicole off before she could say any more to Sara.

“April?” Nicole asked looking confused. “You called Ferret?” Nicole asked looking at Sara again.

“I remembered the card you gave my mother, and went down the mountain on the quad bike and called him.” Sara explained looking worried. “I couldn’t lose you, as well as mum.” Sara added as she broke down and fell on the bed next to Nicole in a flood of tears.

“I’m sorry I worried you Sara.” Nicole said as she rubbed Sara on the back as she tried to comfort her. “So will I live?” Nicole asked as she looked at April.

“Yes, you’ll live, but only because Sara was able to give you some of her blood. It was a good job you’re both related by blood.” April said as she removed the IV from Nicole’s arm. “You need to take it easy for the next week or so though.” April warned.

“How much has she told you about our relationship?” Nicole asked as she looked down at Sara still sobbing at her side.

“Sara had to explain about you once being her father, but don’t look so worried Nikki, Dan and I won’t judge you for it. Sara wouldn’t tell us anything about you apart from what we needed to know so we could save your life.” April explained. “I would like to hear all about it, and what you plan to do now you have a daughter.” April added as she looked at Sara cuddled up to her.

“I was never her father, just the person that spent a night with her mother.” Nicole said in a choked voice as she thought about Samantha now being dead. “I don’t have any right to be her guardian, never mind a parent.” Nicole added as she let her head fall back on to the pillow.

“You made my mum a promise to look after me when she was gone.” Sara said with tear streaked eyes as she lifted her head to look at Nicole. “I don’t have anyone else.” She added as the tears started again.

“You must be hungry, so I’ll go and make you some soup while Sara helps you to get up and come out into the kitchen area.” April said as she turned and walked out of the bedroom.

“I will keep my promise to your mother, but for the time being it looks like you’ll be the one looking after me.” Nicole said as she looked at Sara with a weak smile. “Do you think you can do that for me?” Nicole asked.

“We can look after each other then.” Sara said as she got up off the bed and then set to work helping Nicole to get up and slip on a dressing gown, so Sara could then lead her out to the kitchen where April, Dan and Maggie were.

“Good to see you back with the land of the living again Ice.” Dan said with a smile as he pulled out a chair at the kitchen table.

Nicole looked a little shocked to find Dan still treating her like a lady now he knew the truth about her. “Thank you Dan, but you don’t need to pretend to be a gentleman with me.” Nicole added as she looked down at the table in shame; to worried too look Dan or any of them in the eyes.

“I don’t know what sort of a boy you were, but it was Nicole the woman that saved me, April and Maggie.” Dan said as he sat down next to Nicole and made her look up at him, so she could see how serious he was.

“Do you really mean that?” Nicole asked as she looked up at Dan, and then over at April stirring some soup in a saucepan on the stove.

“Yes I mean that, and I know that April isn’t bothered about your past either, right sis?” Dan asked.

“Nicole already knows my feelings.” April grinned as she looked over her shoulder at Dan and Nicole.

This news seemed to cheer Nicole up quite a bit and she was soon being pampered by Sara when April placed a bowl of soup down in front of her. With one arm in a sling trying to help Nicole keep from moving her bad shoulder too much, it was down to Sara to help feed her.

“I can hold a spoon Sara.” Nicole pointed out just before Sara placed the spoon to Nicole’s mouth.

“I’m sure you could Nikki, but then you wouldn’t be resting would you?” Sara said as she slapped Nicole’s hand away before making her accept the spoon full of soup. “I’ll let you feed yourself some bread.” Sara added as she placed a slice of bread in Nicole’s hand.

Nicole was soon done and then Sara helped her go out onto the porch and take a seat out there so she could get some fresh air before going back to bed. Dan and April sat with Nicole, while Sara got talked into playing a bat and ball game with Maggie for a bit.

“You used to be Nicolas Johnson, didn’t you?” Dan asked as they watched Sara and Maggie running around giggling.

“I thought I asked you not to look into any of this?” Nicole said with an air of annoyance in her voice.

“I know what you said Nikki, but I was worried about the way you were acting over all this, so I looked at Samantha’s past and then I found a picture of a boy that looked a little like you.” Dan started to explain. “At first I thought he was maybe a relative, but I was left feeling confused when I couldn’t find any other living relatives.”

“Well now you know the truth, and understand why I didn’t want you finding anything out. Nicolas Johnson is dead, and so is Samantha now, for what good I did.” Nicole said with sorrow in her voice.

“Sara’s still alive thanks to you, but you weren’t to know that Athena had managed to track you down and follow you back here.” Dan argued.

“I got sloppy and made mistakes, that’s what got Samantha killed.” Nicole wasn’t ready to forgive herself for what happened to Samantha just yet.

“And they both would have died if you hadn’t turned up in that motel room.” Dan pointed out.

“Dan is right Nikki. You did all you could, and I’m sure that Samantha is glad you’re going to be looking after her little girl. I know I would if it was me in her place thinking about Maggie being kept safe.” April said as she watched Maggie playing with Sara.

“Samantha’s not thinking anything though is she? She’s dead.” Nicole growled.

“You loved her didn’t you?” April asked.

“I loved her in a way, but not as two people love each other in the way you think. More like the way you and Dan love each other, or two sisters love each other.” Nicole tried to explain. “Sara was something I never expected to see.” Nicole added with some pride for the one good thing to come out of her time as a boy called Nicolas.

“How do you feel about finding out you have a daughter?” April asked.

“I think my actions speak for themselves.” Nicole smiled. “I just wish I’d been more careful and kept them both alive.” Nicole added with a sigh as she looked towards the side of the house where she knew Samantha was now buried.

“What’s the story with Sara; is she seeing a doctor about her transition?” April asked.

“No not yet. Samantha was sorting out a move for her and Sara before they found a doctor and then she was going to transition in a new area where no one knew about Nicolas.” Nicole explained. “I got her some blockers and some hormones though.” Nicole added.

“She needs to be monitored; you can’t just start giving her all these drugs Nikki.” April warned. “I think you and Sara should come back to my place, so I can keep an eye on you, and also help Sara.” April added.

“I think it’s a good idea Nikki. April has the clinic now, so she can help keep an eye on the two of you and it will not show up anywhere if someone starts looking around.” Dan said backing up his sister’s idea.

“It’s a veterinarian clinic.” Nicole pointed out.

“It’s out in the country, so other than people bringing their pets out to be looked at, we don’t have to many unwanted visitors.” April added.

“I don’t want to put anyone else in danger.” Nicole tried to argue.

“I can look after you better back at my place than I can here, and I think Sara could use some company as well.” April said as she saw how much happier Sara looked as she played with Maggie.

Nicole sat in silence for a couple of minutes as she tried to work out an argument to what Dan and April were saying, but she didn’t have one, so she agreed with them both and then they all went back into the house to get some things packed away ready for the trip back down the mountain.

Once they had all the food that wouldn’t keep packed in the back of April’s SUV, Dan got in Nicole’s 4x4, after helping the others all get in April’s car, and then they set off. Dan was driving Nicole’s 4x4 down the mountain so it would be there ready for when Nicole and Sara were ready to return.

Dan had parked Nicole’s 4x4 in the old barn at the bottom of the mountain before getting behind the wheel of April’s SUV and then they set off for April’s.

April owned a small farm that she’d converted into an animal clinic. Nicole had helped her become a vet as part of her new life, so this made Nicole part owner in the animal clinic, all be it a very silent partner. Dan helped out around the place, and also had all his computer gear set up in the basement of the main house.

Maggie spent most of the trip back home telling Sara all about the animals and how Sara could help her feed them all.

“I’ve never had any pets before, so you’ll have to show me what to do.” Sara said looking excited to get to the farm.

“You’ve never had a pet?” Maggie asked looking shocked.

“No, we always lived in apartments where they wouldn’t let us have pets.” Sara said as she suddenly found herself thinking about her mother, and how she’d never get to see her again. “I don’t even have a photo of my mum to remember her by.” Sara added in a whisper as tears rolled down her cheeks.

“I’ll see if I can get some of your things from your apartment once I’m feeling better.” Nicole promised as she placed her good arm around Sara and hugged her.

Sara was quiet for a short time after that, but she was soon asking Maggie questions and then they were talking like they had been friends all their lives.

Nicole was in some pain and April gave her some painkillers, then Nicole slept for the rest of the trip to April’s home.

Nicole was shocked to wake up and find herself in a bed at April’s. Nicole slipped out of bed and managed to use the toilet she found attached to the room. Nicole then slipped on the dressing gown she found back in the bedroom and then she made her way down stairs and followed the smell of food cooking and found the others in the kitchen.

“Hey Nikki, how you feeling now? Still in some pain?” April asked as she stood stirring something in a pan.

“Hi everyone. I feel better than I have in a couple of days, but how did I get up stairs in that bed?” Nicole asked as she took a seat at the table.

“I carried you up there, but April and Sara got you undressed and in bed.” Dan said with his hands in the air like he was surrendering.

“Thank you.” Nicole smiled, not looking bothered if Dan had seen her naked or not.

April soon had the food cooked and they all sat down to eat. Sara claimed the feeding rights with Nicole, and she cut up all of Nicole’s food on her plate and then let Nicole feed herself using just a fork.

Sara and Maggie helped Dan do the dishes after they finished eating and then Sara ran off with Maggie to look at the animals with April, while Nicole sat out on the porch with Dan.

“Thanks for all the help you’ve given me over the years Dan.” Nicole said as she looked at Sara helping Maggie feed the animals along with a couple of other girls that helped out around the place.

“Glad I could help you out ice.” Dan grinned.

“Ice is dead Dan; just call me Nikki from now on.” Nicole smiled. “I’ve got to look after Sara from now on, so I’m not going to be running off getting in trouble.” She explained.

“Does this mean you’ll be getting a real job?” Dan asked with a worried look.

“I’ve got more than enough money to last me and Sara a lifetime, but I might look at investing some money in some companies to play it safe.” Nicole shrugged. “I’ve got plenty of time to work all that out in the future though.” Nicole added with a sigh as she just relaxed and focused on getting better.

“So the ice princess is finally going to settle down?” Dan asked sarcastically.

     “Looks that way.” Nicole sighed.

“Do you have any idea where you might be thinking of settling down?”

“I’ve just found out I have a kid, been shot and caused the death of the one woman I loved before I became a girl myself, so please forgive me for not working that out yet.” Nicole said sarcastically.

“I think you’re just making up excuses now, trying to avoid my question.” Dan said with a raised eyebrow and a smirk.

Nicole couldn’t help giggling at Dan’s comment, and it felt good to just relax and have a good laugh, even if it did make her shoulder hurt.

“Take a walk with me?” Nicole asked as she got to her feet and looked down at Dan.

“Sure, but not too far.” Dan warned as he got up and then did the gentlemanly thing and helped Nicole down the steps.

“Yes mummy.” Nicole pouted just before she started grinning again.

“I’m being serious Nikki.” Dan warned. “You need to rest and get better.” He added with worry in his voice.

Nicole let Dan show her around the farm, and they both stood and watched Sara and Maggie feeding the rabbits now they had them all rounded up. Nicole was soon looking like she was in some pain with her shoulder, so Dan walked her back to the house and then helped her to get comfy on the couch before he got her some painkillers and then left her to get some rest.

Nicole spent the next several weeks recovering enough to be able to start using her arm again, and not need large doses of painkillers. April was happy with the way Nicole was healing, and also happy with the way Sara was taking to the hormones and blockers.

Sara had become a big sister to Maggie in the short time they had been together, and the two of them had just finished setting the table and helped bring the food to the table when Nicole said she needed to have a word with Sara about something.

“What’s wrong Nikki?” Sara asked as Nicole asked her to take a seat at the table so they could talk.

“I need to have a word with you about what we’ll be doing now I’m well enough to look after the two of us.” Nicole started.

“Does this mean we’ll be leaving soon?” Sara asked looking worried.

“Yes it could Sara, but I wanted to ask you if you could see yourself settling down here?” Nicole asked with a smirk when she saw the look on Sara’s face change from one of worry to one of pure happiness.

“Are you serious?!” Sara shouted as she jumped up and threw her arms around Nicole as she hugged her. “I love it here.” Sara added sounding excited.

Sara and Maggie were soon talking excitedly about all the fun things they would be able to keep doing together, and all the fun things they wanted to try now that Nicole had made up her mind to lay down roots here with April, Dan and Maggie.

“I’m glad you decided to stop here with us Nikki.” April said later in the night as they sat out on the porch watching the sun set while Sara and Maggie ran around giggling and screaming while Dan chased them around in the garden.

“I know nothing about raising a girl, or any child for that matter, and I was hoping to get your help with Sara.” Nicole explained her worries.

“All the things you’ve done, and the thought of raising a child scares you?” April asked looking amused.

“I spent years training to become a good assassin April.” Nicole pointed out.

“Raising a child is on the job training, and you can offer Sara more help than you give yourself credit for.” April smiled.

“You mean because I used to be just like her?” Nicole asked. “I didn’t exactly do my transition by the book though.”

“True, but you didn’t have Dan, Maggie and me to help you. Once Dan has your new ID’s sorted out, we can get Sara to a doctor and on the right dose of medication.” April explained her plan.

“No, I don’t want anyone to know about Sara being anything but a girl.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea Nikki. Sara needs to be monitored and looked at by specialists.” April argued.

“I can’t take a chance on someone finding out about Sara, or my past.” Nicole frowned. “I can look after myself, but I won’t go putting Sara in danger, so we keep her transition below the radar.” Nicole added in a tone that said her word was final on the subject.

April wasn’t sure it was the best plan, but she could see that Nicole wasn’t going to budge on the subject, so she agreed to help all she could.

Dan got the new identities sorted out and looking foolproof, Dan then helped Nicole and Sara sort out a headstone for Samantha’s grave. The headstone just said ‘Here lies Samantha, a mother and a friend’

Nicole took a trip on her own back to Samantha and Sara’s old apartment and after slipping the super some money, she managed to get all of their personal things, so Sara now had some photos of her mother. Nicole also started training Sara in the art of self defence and how to shoot a gun and throw a knife, just in case they ever had to go on the run again. Nicole never knew if or when her past would come back to haunt her.

Epilogue

Nicole and Sara started going up to the cabin once a month to place flowers on Samantha’s grave and let her know that everything was going fine. Sara would sit and talk to her mother’s grave for hours with Nicole sat at her side happy to listen and just hold Sara’s hand.

Sara started to develop as a girl with budding breasts. Nicole took her to see a doctor and he did a little surgery to make her genitals look more like a girl’s until she was old enough to have the operation to make her look like a girl for real.

Nicole found herself getting closer to Dan as time went on, and it wasn’t long before Dan asked her out on a date, Nicole accepted and she had a wonderful time. They finally slept together and Nicole thought it was the most wonderful night of her life. Dan finally asked Nicole to marry him, and she said yes. It was a small wedding, but Nicole thought it was wonderful, and Sara was a bridesmaid.

Sara started school as a girl and also became a big sister to Maggie, they did everything together, even after Sara made new friends at School, she still found time to spend with Maggie. Nicole and Sara went out of the country on holiday when Sara was sixteen and when they came back, Sara was finally a girl and just like her mother, as that is how she saw Nicole by that point. They still went up to the cabin all the time, but Sara just saw it as she had two mothers.

Nicole never thought she’d have much of a future to look forward to, but she now had everything to live for and she never again felt the need to take up her old career. No one ever came looking for her, and Dan kept an eye out to make sure they didn’t.

Sara was happy to call Dan her dad and he played the protective father very well when Sara started dating guys. Sara smiled when she brought the first boy home to meet her parents and the boy looked more worried of Dan than Nicole, but Sara wondered what the boy would say if he knew that Nicole was the one to be afraid of.

Sara found she loved animals, so she followed in April’s footsteps and trained to become a veterinarian so she could help out around the clinic.

Nicole invested some of her money and made sure none of them would ever want for anything. She never did fully forgive herself for not saving Samantha’s life, but she did feel glad that Sara got to live hers, just like Samantha made her promise.
