A Familiar Experience — A DarkRealms Story
Chapter One
Taylor Michaels sat in his room in Shrewsbury, England, reading one of his books. His very favorite author and personal hero was Dr. Angela Bernacci, a noted volcanologist. She had written several books on the subject, and Taylor was enjoying the newest as he pondered his future.
Taylor was a baby-faced, diminutive young man with short dark hair. He usually wore black denim jeans and black tee shirts - not to make a statement, but simply to save his time and effort. His theory was that if he should miss his laundry one day, since his clothes were all the same, he could skip a day’s laundry, so long as they weren’t too dirty.
He’d completed his A levels, and done quite well as usual. Taylor was a very good student, and he had several recommendations from his teachers and his headmaster. He’d hoped his parents would be proud of him, but the way they treated him made him feel like he’d done nothing but perform as expected, and there was no recognition of the dedication and effort he had put into his schooling. As usual, they weren’t impressed in the least.
He knew he shouldn’t have expected any real sort of praise from his parents, as they just rarely did anything more than acknowledging him. Only his teachers and his Nanny had ever commented on his excellence and genius. The boy was exceptionally talented and had impressed many in the educational community. It had been a struggle to stay ahead of the lad, and some of his teachers credited that struggle with improving their own skills.
The only place Taylor had ever done less than the top of the class was in his physical fitness classes. It wasn’t that he didn’t give it his best effort, but it hadn’t been until his final year that he’d topped a meter and a half, and he was just a hair over 8 stone (about 5’ and 115 lbs.). He was, officially, the smallest student in his class, but perhaps the most aggressive.
He would never balk or back down from a challenge, though he had frequently been unable to perform well. There had been a few minor injuries, especially on the pitch, but he never pulled out of a competition, and most of the students respected him for his stubborn determination. There had been a few bullies that didn’t know enough to avoid him, but most people at least knew better than to start anything. Taylor could be almost vicious at times.
Admittedly, he’d only had a few real friends in his life, thanks to his drive, determination and a stubbornness that put most people off. Nothing kept him down-if he couldn’t beat it, he did his best to somehow make it an asset. Taylor was intense, and the friends he did have were usually his exact opposites, like Jimmy King. Jimmy was very intelligent, but he didn’t have Taylor’s aggression. He preferred to make his point, and then let others argue it out until they saw that he’d been right all along.
Jimmy’s weakness was for mysteries and investigation. He’d read countless books, both fiction and factual. He could be almost as single minded as Taylor when he was in “detective” mode. His dogged refusal to fail had impressed Taylor, who idolized Jimmy and his relentless desire to succeed.
After school, Jimmy had chosen to join the military police. He wanted to be able to show some experience when he applied to join the local force. Likewise, the rest of the few friends Taylor’d had were all gone, off to find their own lives. Taylor knew that he had been procrastinating, not being sure where he truly belonged.
He’d had offers from several excellent universities which he’d been considering, but he was also looking for some adventure. The minute he’d read the article regarding Dr. Bernacci’s classes in Geology and Vulcanology at Ravencrest University in the United States, he had known what his choice would be.
He had presented his case to his parents. There had actually been a conversation, the longest he’d ever had with his parents, and they had finally agreed to provide for his financial needs while at the University.
It would be his first time living away from home. He carefully decided on those things he would need, and he chose his clothing carefully. He made sure to leave some leeway in his budget for incidental and necessary additions to his wardrobe. He knew the weather could reportedly be harsh at his new home, and he wanted to be prepared.
He looked forward to his classes with Dr. Bernacci. Her fascinating books had kept him enthralled for years. He’d desperately wanted to be accepted into her program, and was thrilled when he received his letter of acceptance.
Leaving his home behind for the first time had been easier than expected, but it was all the hassle and rigmarole involved with coming to the US that caused the most problems. The last leg of his trip, the bus ride into Ravencrest, had only been stressful due to his own anticipation, and he was very glad to be standing in front of the University, at last!
He soon met his roommate, Justin Locke, a pre-med student, and cousin of the Ravencrest Locke family. Justin was a very pleasant person whose family came from Camden, New Jersey. He was generally quiet, and easy to talk to. He was several inches taller than Taylor, but very thin, with a wild shock of light blonde hair. Taylor had been quite satisfied to have a serious student rather than a “party animal” as a roommate.
As school began, Taylor and Justin adjusted to their new way of life, and Taylor quite enjoyed it. They both did quite well in their classes, and they soon developed new habits which should carry them through the next few years of their school life.
The two young men seemed to be on the same page, in that they had both chosen to put their school work first and social life a distant second. Not that they couldn’t get dates, they simply chose not to. At least, that was what they told themselves. Both of them were trying to impress their families, in hopes of increased financial assistance.
The biggest challenge to any guy’s concentration is a pretty girl, and at Ravencrest they were some of the most beautiful young women anywhere. The DBZ girls in particular were all exceptionally gorgeous. Some guys seemed congenitally attracted to their almost unearthly beauty, and while Taylor enjoyed looking at them, he had already learned from experience that they wouldn’t be interested in someone like him, so he did his best to ignore them.
Taylor was pleased that Dr. Bernacci had been very impressed, both with his knowledge and his great drive to learn. He’d had to be careful not to seem like a “brown nose” in his enthusiasm, but it was all so interesting! He actually looked forward to his class days. He felt that the other courses that were required were simplistic, and he easily breezed right through them.
After the first grading period, he’d scored a perfect 4.0 grade, but his parents, as usual, seemed somehow unimpressed and very distant. They had congratulated him, but even the call to talk to them seemed like an imposition into their lives. He thought to himself that this time, it had almost seemed like they nearly praised him, something he had truly craved, but never really received.
Halloween had been a seriously crazy time at Ravencrest University, but Taylor noticed that the locals didn’t really get as excited as the students. Justin and Taylor had, as usual, skipped all of the parties, although Justin did spend the evening with his cousins at the mansion. Taylor had been on his computer, working on a project for Dr. Bernacci. Boring, perhaps, but apparently safer than the parties.
The big news after Halloween was the mysterious disappearances of a few young men. The disappearances were big news at first, but after a week or two it was old news, and it was assumed the missing young men, who had not been great students, had simply dropped out, which was not unusual.
Family obligations frequently drew Justin out of the “studycave,” as they called it. Taylor had been invited to see the mansion, but he’d “had to” refuse. He had become a regular volunteer, serving meals at a homeless shelter, and he was very involved with it. In truth, Taylor, like many others, found the huge Locke home more than intimidating. There was something about it that scared him silly.
There were a few other students from Ravencrest who also did volunteer work with him. He’d noticed a couple of pretty young ladies who often flirted a bit with some of the other volunteers. As usual, it didn’t seem as though they had even seen him, and as soon as his shift was over, he took a bus back to his dorm, and resumed working on his project.
By Monday the nearly completed assignment was shown to Dr. Bernacci. Taylor hoped that she might have some suggestions for him. The last part of the assignment involved anomalous geology and researching some of the unusual geology in the region, and he’d been having a difficult time finding source material.
“I have a friend in Finson who should be able to help you. Katherine is a great rock hound, and she’d be an excellent source of information, if you have the time.”
He had no classes for the next two days, so he called to set up a meeting with Katherine Magee, a pleasant sounding woman. They arranged a meeting for the next evening. Taylor left early the next morning and he expected to be in Finson late that afternoon. He would stay at a motel near the bus terminal, and be home Wednesday evening, with plenty of time to study for his class on Thursday, so it worked out well for him. He planned on turning in his project Thursday afternoon, nearly a month early. Katherine told him to call from the bus terminal, and she would pick him up.
As usual, the bus was fairly boring, but since the route from Ravencrest to Finson was not a busy one during the week, there was plenty of room. Taylor had planned ahead, and he had two mp3 players and a few textbooks to read on the way there and back, along with a canteen of water and some snacks.
When he got to Finson, Taylor called Katherine, and she picked him up as planned. She seemed to be quite eager to show him what she called a particularly interesting and very surprising specimen.
They went into her house, and he asked to use her restroom. She was happy to oblige him, and pointed him in the correct direction. As soon as he returned to her kitchen, his feet decided to stop moving, and things began to get strange.
Katherine was speaking using a language he was unfamiliar with. She was staring at Taylor intently, and he felt a strange, almost sick feeling in the pit of his stomach. It spread throughout his body, and he knew he was in very big trouble. He felt smaller, somehow, and she looked very pleased, almost giddy. Taylor tried his best to move, but his feet still didn’t seem to be cooperating. His shoes felt strangely large, and his clothes were oddly bulky. Worse, he was itchy and irritated all over his body.
He noticed that the hair on his arms was thick and black, but not long. His fingers hurt and they were hard to move, and they looked shorter. His feet felt strange as well, and much too small for his shoes.
He was definitely shrinking, and more things began to change. His bottom felt very strange, and his back was increasingly painful. It was getting quite difficult to stand, and soon he couldn’t do it at all. His gut felt as though someone had grabbed his insides and pulled them out. The pain in his legs and back was incredible, as if every bone was twisting out of shape. Taylor hurt so badly that he was sure he was going to die. It finally reached a point where it was more than he could handle, and he blessedly lost consciousness.
He woke feeling very different, but at least the sick feeling and the pain had stopped. He was covered up, and inside the covers. He absolutely could not stand up, and his body felt so strange. Even his vision seemed different. He began to understand when a giant hand reached in and grabbed him. He had shrunk so much that he was covered by his shirt! When the witch grabbed him by the back of the neck and pulled him out, she looked absolutely gigantic. Holding him in one hand, she reached into her purse with the other, as he struggled to escape.
“Relax, dear,” she laughed, as she lifted him up to her face. “It’s going to be all right, you are absolutely adorable, my darling. Here, take a look!”
She opened her compact, and let him see himself in the mirror. He was horrified to see that he was looking at a small black kitten with bright yellow eyes! She had changed him! He couldn’t believe it was possible. Witches were real!? No, there had to be another explanation. He just had to get away, to get back to Ravencrest and his dorm!
“You’re so cute!” She said, holding him tightly as she inspected him. She lifted his tail. “Just as I planned. I won’t have some randy tomcat, spraying everywhere. Laura is going to love her little girl!”
Girl? He was a female, now? No! She suddenly had visions of her future. Being mounted by a tom, bearing kittens?! He felt as though he would vomit, but there was nothing to bring up.
Katherine put her into a large canvas shopping bag. “Now you stay there and keep quiet, Taylor. We have to go see your new owner, and I can’t wait to see her face!”
Taylor did her best to escape. She tried to climb to the top of the bag, but something prevented her from getting out. She tried to call for help, but all that came out were cute little meows.
She heard voices. Katherine was speaking to someone on the phone as she prepared to leave.
“She’s just perfect, Angela!” Katherine said. “Yes, Laura is going to be ecstatic! I’ve never seen a black tortoiseshell before! Her colors are beautiful, and she’s so exotic!” Katherine said. “I’m hoping that she will be helpful to Laura. Yes, she’s a very talented young witch with a very bright future ahead of her, and her familiar should reflect her talent. Indeed Professor, as smart as this one is, they could be quite the pair!”
All right, hon, I will. I have to go, okay?” She laughed. “Yes, this should be fun! Bye, Angela, and thanks for all your help!” She ended the call and picked up Taylor’s bag and continued on her way.
Taylor was beyond despair. How could any of this be happening? He was clearly in some sort of a very lucid dream. All of this was completely impossible. He couldn’t be turned into a kitten. Just the difference in mass made the whole idea ludicrous.
As she carried him along, though, it certainly felt real. He tried poking himself with a tiny but extremely sharp claw, hoping to wake himself up, but all he had done was draw blood. Had Katherine drugged him for some odd reason? That would explain this extremely realistic dream. As he swung around in the bag, he started to wonder, what if this was real? What if Magic really existed?
Maybe she wasn’t crazy, and she was doomed to be a house pet, the plaything of a little girl, his whole life and all of his studies, nothing but a memory. It certainly didn’t feel like any dream he’d ever had.
The next thing Taylor saw was the huge face of a young girl with long red hair. She looked to be in her mid-teens and was quite attractive. Her pale skin was accented with several freckles which only seemed to make her more beautiful. Her brilliant green eyes sparkled with surprise when she saw Taylor.
“Aunt Katherine! She’s so beautiful!” The girl reached in to grab Taylor carefully in both hands. The moment that she touched Taylor, something odd happened, and Taylor’s world changed completely. Some kind of power sort of “flowed” into and through Taylor, and she relaxed quite happily. A strange feeling of completeness filled her, and she was so comfortable she began to purr for the first time.
As Laura lifted the kitten out of the bag, Taylor looked her in the eyes, and suddenly knew what the Laura was thinking! It wasn’t very strong or clear, more like she could feel the way Laura felt, but Taylor knew this was just the start. She also knew that she loved this girl with all of her heart, and that Laura felt the same. They were somehow “connected”, and that was fine with Taylor.
Laura looked at her Aunt. “It’s so strange, almost like I know what she’s thinking!”
“Really, dear? What is she thinking, ‘I’m hungry’, perhaps?” her Mother asked.
“No, Mom. More than anything else, I can feel that she loves me, as much as I love her!”
She held the happily purring kitten to her cheek. Her tears ran down her face. “Oh, she’s the most wonderful gift ever! Thank you, Aunt Katherine!”
“She’s your familiar, Laura.” Katherine said. “As you both develop together, you’ll grow to know one another so well that you’ll always know just how she feels. Some witches can even talk to their familiars. It takes a lot of luck for that to happen, though. If you love her enough, and you work together, she’ll be able to help you. She’s very intelligent, and she’ll develop useful abilities that could come in very handy. With her, you’ll always have a friend and confidant, and no matter what, someone you can love absolutely, and who will love you just as much in return. You probably felt a little strange when you first touched her, right?”
“Yes, like a small current going from one hand to the other, right through her.”
“That was the link I’ve crafted, forming for the first time. You are now linked forever and your lives are tied together. No one, not even your husband, will ever be as close to you as she is. It’s a very good sign that the two of you accept one another so quickly. I predict great things for you two, Laura.”
“I love you so much, Aunt Katherine!” She said as she gave her Aunt a one handed hug. “Mystic and I will have so much fun together!”
“Mystic, Laura? Is that her name?”
“It only fits, Mom. As soon as I looked into those eyes, it was magic!” She took her treasure into the living room so that they could play and get to know each other.
Meanwhile, at the kitchen table, Katherine discussed with Laura’s mother Debra about where the kitten had come from.
Debra was concerned about the affect the spell might have left on her sister’s soul. “Was it hard to contact a lost soul to create her?”
K0atherine blushed. “Well, I actually had some help from a friend of mine. She’s a teacher at Ravencrest University, and she owed me a major favor. She had a nice student, a young Englishman, very smart and very cute. She arranged to have him visit me, and I handled the rest.”
“What! Are you saying that you used forbidden black magic to entrap my daughter’s familiar? Katherine, dear, how could you?” Debra asked, angrily. She’d known that Kathy had no real sense of right or wrong, and many in the family had warned her that she was dangerous. Debra had argued that Kathy had never hurt anyone, to her apparent regret, it seemed. “What about his family? His friends? Dammit, Katherine, there are reasons that those spells are forbidden!”
“Well of course, I’m very well aware of that, Debra. One of those reasons is that, while a perfect link is very beneficial, an imperfect link can drive both the familiar and the witch insane, so it’s good news that they are well matched then, isn’t it?”
“How could you risk my daughter’s sanity?” Debra angrily whispered. She wanted to scream, but she didn’t want to disturb Laura. “What if something had gone wrong?”
“Well, it didn’t, and there’s nothing to be done about it now.” Katherine said calmly, ignoring her sister’s anger. “Sis, the reason some links were bad was that the two partners were not well matched. I’ve searched everywhere to get just the right one so that Laura’s familiar was as intelligent as she was.
Mystic is much more than a normal familiar. She’ll be a loving, lifelong and faithful companion for Laura, and she’ll help her to be a powerful witch. Do you understand what she said? They’ve already formed a telepathic link! That’s far beyond my greatest expectations.”
“Bugger it, Kathy, that’s not how a familiar is created! You can’t steal someone’s life, that’s just wrong!” God, how were they going to fix things this time? Debra knew that the coven would need to know about this, and fast, but she hated to be the one to tell them. She knew that this time Debra would be institutionalized, and possibly lobotomized to keep her away from her magic.
“What’s going to happen when the coven demands that you to restore Mystic to his original form? What will happen to Laura then?”
Katherine looked thoughtful. “I don’t honestly know if that’s even possible. Whatever happens, Laura will be linked with him or her for life. That bond can’t be broken, except by death, and possibly not even then.”
Laura sat on the floor, quietly stoking Mystic. She could hear their argument, and she smiled. Another disaster from Aunt Katherine, she thought as she held her kitten in the air. “So, little girl, you were a boy? Don’t you ever worry, my dear.” She whispered. “I’m sure that we could have a lot of fun with that, too. No matter what happens, I will always love you, baby.”
Taylor knew she was telling the truth, and her heart rejoiced. She had become confused, though. She absolutely loved Laura with every fiber of her being. Strangely, she found she was even beginning to enjoy her new body. Every time Laura stroked her fur, the feeling made her go weak with intense and indescribable pleasure.
She liked feeling cute, and she enjoyed making Laura laugh with her sometimes clumsy antics. It wasn’t so bad, being a cute and adorable kitten that was loved by someone like Laura. She still missed her old life, a little, and she was a bit concerned that her feelings might not be real, that perhaps a part of Katherine’s spell made her accept her new life?
As she scampered playfully around the room, she happened to see herself in a mirror for the first time. When she had seen herself in Katherine’s makeup mirror, she hadn’t noticed the colors on her back. Brown, tan, orange, and beige in an attractive tortoise-shell pattern. A black tortoiseshell? He’d never seen a cat like that before, but now she was one.
“What do you think, Mystic?” Laura asked, laughing as she watched her looking in the mirror. “Yes, you’re a very pretty girl. I’ve never seen a kitty like you, either.
Laura picked her up and held the kitten to her cheek. “You’re right sweetie, we’re both beautiful.”
They hadn’t fully made the connection that would really let them “talk” to each other, but the more time they spent together, the clearer it got. All of their emotions came through quite well, and Mystic understood what she was saying, of course, but her kitten mouth couldn’t make the sounds to speak.
This really wasn’t a bad life, she thought. My new job is to run, and play, and love Laura. As she cuddled in Laura’s lap, she decided that, for now, she was very happy with her new life. It was as though she had finally become who she was meant to be, and she was right where she belonged.
For now.

A Familiar Experience: A Dark Realms Tale
Chapter Two
Laura brushed her long coppery hair, trying to decide what she wanted to wear. Her cat, a beautiful, half-grown black female with tortoiseshell markings, stretched out on her bed. In the 7 months they had been together, they had grown to know each other well. Mystic raised her head and looked up at her owner.
*Your Silk shirt and the longer dark green skirt, together with some dark hose to help keep your legs warm would look very nice, love.*
*What a surprise, dear, you’ve always loved that outfit! I agree that it would look very nice, though. Thank you, dear!* She reached out to stroke Mystic, and then withdrew the suggested outfit from the closet. She smiled and dressed, then added a little lip gloss.
*What do you think, little girl? Shoes, or boots?*
*Sweetheart, you know I think your heeled boots make you look sexy, but perhaps your flats would be more comfortable?*
*Hmm.* Laura lightly touched Mystic’s nose. *I think you just don’t want the cute boys staring at me! I won’t be outside for very long, so you’re probably right, shoes would be best.*
*I wish you didn’t have to go to school, Laura.*
Laura laughed. *You and me both, baby girl.*
She slid on a pair of ballet flats, then picked Mystic up and settled her in her arms. When they got to the stairs, Mystic jumped out of her arms and ran down the stairs. Laura had tripped at the bottom of the stairs with Mystic in her arms at Christmastime, and now she wouldn’t let Laura hold her on the staircase.
Laura walked in to the kitchen to find her mother stroking Mystic, who was purring happily.
“It’s nice that I always know when you’re coming downstairs, dear. Your escort always shows up a few minutes before you do. I think she likes being spoiled a little while she waits for you.”
“A little?” She said as she stroked Mystic’s muzzle. “My little girl is very spoiled and she loves it.”
*I’m a cat, darling. It’s my rightful due.* Mystic lifted her head imperiously, making Laura laugh and pick her up.
“You can be so silly, sweetie!” She said as she held the cat above her head. “And I love you sooo much!”
*Not half so much as I love you, Laura, my sweet.*
Laura, and Mystic continued to converse telepathically while she ate. Debra, Laura’s mother, couldn’t hear Mystic, of course, but she and Laura would talk and Laura would share Mystic’s thoughts. No one mentioned Katherine, although she frequently dropped by the house. Debra had regretfully reported Katherine’s illegal spell, but all that she had heard from the Coven was that they were investigating her and what she had done thoroughly. In the meantime, Debra and Laura were to say nothing, and just respond normally.
‘Well, I’ve got to go to school. I’ll see you in a few hours, so you two have fun.” Laura said. And you behave, love. No more experiments in the bathroom, all right? At least, not until I get home, all right?*
*(sigh) Yes, Laura. Have a good day, sweetheart.*
*Not until I come home to you, pretty girl. Bye!*
Of course, they couldn’t truly be separated if they chose-Mystic could hear her quite well at the school. She liked to close her eyes and see the classes through Laura’s eyes. It was her favorite distraction. In the time she had been with Laura, she had done her best to adjust to her new life, and she was usually fairly relaxed and comfortable.
The holidays had been difficult, because she was very homesick. She wondered how her parents were doing, and if they missed her. She realized that even if she could get home, they wouldn’t know her. She tried hard not to be sad, because her emotions also affected Laura, and she hated to see Laura sad. She truly loved her, and would do almost anything for her.
She heard the doorbell, and she knew that Katherine was visiting with Debra. Mystic had found a few good hiding spots, and she typically hid whenever Katherine was in the house. She was definitely not on her list of favorite people.
Today she was in one of her favorite spots, behind Laura’s bookcase near the furnace vent. She felt safe and warm, so she closed her eyes and opened her mind to Laura’s History class. Now if she could just resist responding to the questions...
Elsewhere...
“Yes that’s the man I want. I’m sorry, but no one else will be acceptable. That’s right...Good man! Please have Corporal King report to me as soon as possible. Yes, that will be acceptable. Thank you, Staff Sergeant.” The woman turned. “They’ll be sending Jimmy right away, Duncan. Yes, now we’ll get some where!”
Back at Laura’s house in Finson...
“Hello, my sweet girl!” Laura said as she came in the house. Mystic always met her at the door, waiting to be picked up and stroked. She knew through her link that her mom was in the basement, doing laundry.
“I’m home, Mom!” she called down the stairs.
“Great!” Debra said. “Get your chores done; I’m taking us out for dinner!”
“Score!” Laura told Mystic. Her first chore was cleaning the litter box, but Mystic was a very neat cat, and she did her best to keep her litter box easy to maintain. Laura needed very little time to finish that chore and she and Mystic kept up a conversation as she moved on to vacuuming the living room. Her last chores were to put down some water, and to feed Mystic.
Mystic had been a little difficult, at first, when it came to eating. Having been a human, she found that she wasn’t happy with the idea of regular cat food. At least not until Laura heard about Samuelson’s. It was a dry cat food that Mystic couldn’t get enough of. It was organic, and Mystic told Laura that it was a lot like eating cookies! Yes, the flavors were different, but she found it more than satisfactory. Together with the occasional table scraps and their favorite, hard-boiled eggs (Laura loved the whites, Mystic loves the yolks), they kept her well fed.
Laura poured out a bowl of food, and then they shared a snack of cold hard boiled eggs. Mystic liked a couple of ice cubes in her water dish, and Laura was glad to oblige. They waited at the kitchen table while Debra finished whatever she was doing. Laura finished her homework while Mystic moved between helpfully coaching her and doing her best to annoy Laura, especially with her tail. She loved to tickle Laura’s nose with it. Eventually the homework devolved into a playful romp on the kitchen floor. Laura had discovered some sensitive spots on Mystic’s sides, and she enjoyed the way Mystic curled up in delight when she stroked her there.
“All right you two, enough.” Debra chuckled. “We need to get ready to leave.”
“What’s the occasion, Mom?”
“I just thought that Mexican sounded good. I heard something this morning, and sitting down to a Wet Burrito sounded good.”
“Belt Line Bar?” Laura asked, almost drooling.
“Of course, dear! We can even pick up a child’s meal so Mystic can share, all right?”
*Oh, yeah, that sounds yummy! I love Belt Line’s food!*
*I know, sweetie, but no sauce, this time, okay?*
*Oh, all right, but their burrito sauce is so good!*
*It is, darling, but I have to clean the litter box, remember?*
*Si, senorita, no salsa, por favor.*
Laura giggled, which made her mother look at her, questioningly.
“I convinced Mystic not to get the sauce tonight.”
“Oh. I mean, OH! Heaven’s no!”
“It’s okay Mom, she’s cool.”
“Thank goodness!”
Laura got the distinct feeling of Mystic sticking out her tongue, which made her giggle again.
Ravenscrest University, Men’s Dorms- 2 days later...
“Hello? Yes, this is Justin, How can I help you?”
A voice asked him a few questions.
“I know, it was very strange. He left to go to another town, and then never returned. I’ve been very worried about him.”
There were a few more questions.
“No, he didn’t say who he was meeting, only that Professor Bernacci set it up. He needed some more information for a project, and someone in a town called Finson was supposed to be of help.”
A little more discussion.
“No, I’m glad to help. If there’s anything else I can do, let me know, please. Your very welcome, Mr. King. Bye.”
A Familiar Experience: A Dark Realms Tale
Chapter 3
Ravencrest University-
The young man waiting outside of her class room smiled at Dr. Angela Bernacci. She was flattered at the attention. He was well built, with short, dark hair, she noted, and his smile was quite attractive. She rarely had such an attractive man take an interest in her class, and she wondered if he was going to be another “Indiana Jones” wannabe. She tried to make sure her students knew up front that Geology and Archeology were rarely as romantic or exciting as the movies portrayed.
But then, once in a while you come across something truly unusual, like her friend Katherine in Finson, Vermont. An incident had brought the two of them into contact one summer. Angela’s ex-husband Don assaulted her at a motel in Finson, and it was witnessed by Katherine, who helped to make Don “disappear” with her magical powers. The farmer had probably never even noticed an extra pig in the pen, and Angela had been truly grateful.
Of course, she regretted sending Taylor to Katherine. The boy was simply a genius, and would have made a wonderful assistant, but she knew that she had an obligation to Katherine, and she was not about to make the mistake of trying to ignore her request. Who knew what the witch would have done if she hadn’t complied?
After class had ended, the handsome young man stepped into the room. Angela was not one for false modesty. She knew that she was still quite a beauty, even at 42. She was an internationally recognized volcanologist, and she was independently wealthy, thanks to a convenient life insurance policy that Don had invested in when they were married, and which had fortunately still named her as beneficiary.
“Dr. Bernacci?” She smiled at his accent. She loved the way the British spoke, so romantically. He smelled quite nice, and dressed well, so unlike most of her students.
“Yes, how may I help you?” She smiled, thinking that she was hoping she could help him to scratch a certain itch of hers. She was already fantasizing when he held out a badge.
“My name is James King, and I need to speak to you regarding the disappearance of Taylor Michaels.”
Her disappointment and anxiety made her quite bitchy, and she tried to send him on his way quickly.
“I’m sorry, but he has not been in my class for some time, Mr. King. I don’t know how I could be of any help to you. Now, if you will please excuse me, I need to file some papers with our accounting...”
Two other men stepped into the room. “Please excuse us, Professor Bernacci, but it is most important that you speak to us.”
“More friends, Mr. King?”
The taller of the two men pulled out his badge. No, Professor, I’m Agent Bowen of the FBI. My partner and I are assisting Seargent King in his investigation into the kidnapping of Taylor Michaels. We’d like you to come with us, Professor, there are a great many questions we need you to answer.”
Finson, the home of Debra and Laura Martin-
Laura and Mystic were relaxing in the back yard. Well, Laura was relaxing, and working on her tan. Mystic was rather clumsily stalking some birds who were gathering at the small pond in the Martin’s back yard. Laura watched through Mystic’s eyes, and occasionally offered comments and advice to the young cat.
*You need to approach them from the shady side, love. Your coloring stands out from the overly dry grass to well.*
As the birds scattered from Mystic’s pouncing attack, she conceded the idea.
*You’re probably right, dear. Please understand, I’ve never actually tried this with real birds. It’s far more difficult than I would have thought.*
*I see that, oh mighty hunter.*
*Your disparagements serve no good purpose, Oh faithless one.*
Laura giggled, as Mystic tried to blend into the shade of the hedge.
*And what do you plan to do with your kill, Bagheera?*
*I’ll admit, I’m not really sure, little frog. I really have no desire to eat one raw, and sparrows would probably be fairly difficult to roast, I imagine.*
*Oh, I’m sure. Of course, stuffing them could be a bit difficult, as well.*
Laura had to admit, she knew where Mystic was, but her colors matched those of the hedge so well that it was difficult to see her, at least until the chihuahua from next door began to bark, startling both the birds and Mystic. Laura couldn’t help but laugh as Mystic bolted to take cover underneath Laura’s chair.
*As soon as I reach my full growth, that mouse-puppy’s a goner!*
*Now, you leave little Pedro alone. He’s only a baby, you meanie.*
*Laura, dear, might I remind you that this body is not much older than Pedro-baby, so it would only be fair. Besides, as I’ve often reminded you, I’m a cat, we eat mice. Pedro makes my mouth water.*
*Mystic, you need to remember your manners.*
*Okay, but it’s going to be difficult to use a knife and fork with these paws, sweetheart.*
*You’re a bad girl, Mystic.*
*And don’t you forget it, little girl.*
Laura giggled as Mystic strutted out from under her char and jumped into Laura’s lap. She settled herself into a comfortable spot and waited for a scratch from Laura, who was glad to oblige.
The doorbell rang and Laura heard her mother cross the room to answer it.
A few minutes later, Deb and some of the ladies that Laura knew were from the Coven came out to the yard. “Laura?” Debra asked. These ladies would like to interview you and Mystic, dear.”
“Sure, Mom.” Laura lifted an almost-sleeping Mystic and walked over to the shaded table.
*(Yawn) Why would they want to interview me?*
*Don’t ask me, I’m just an innocent, beautiful girl.*
*And oh-so modest, too.*
*A lady recognizes her strengths, dear.*
*Ah. I have so much to learn about being female. Do I need to practice, or is insanity simply expected?*
*Your disparagements serve no useful purpose, O master of comedy.”
*Oh, I am impressed! A marvelous return, worthy of Wimbledon!*
*I’m an American, dear-I only play on clay courts.*
*Except when you fall on your butt, then it’s your Asphalt.*
* (Groan) Puns are the lowest form of humor, love. They are beneath you.*
*Couldn’t get much beneath this, sweetheart. My belly almost rubs the ground.*
*I give up! You win!*
*Of course, was the outcome ever in doubt?*
“Um, if I may be allowed to interrupt, Ladies?” The speaker was a tall, rather plain woman, known to Laura as Mrs. White.
“Our apologies, Mrs. White. How can we help you?” Laura asked. Mystc sat up on the table, her ears erect and her tail twitching as she focused on the discussion.
“It seems that Mystic has some interesting connections in the British government. Her, um, parents have begun to make some requests of our associates in the United Kingdom.”
“I don’t understand, ma’am. What sort of requests? I thought her parents were norms?” Debra asked.
“Oh, that seems to be true, but her father is the director of the Paranormal Investigations arm of Scotland Yard, and her mother is the chief investigator for that organization. They may be norms, but their requests carry some powerful influence. We have been asked to intercede in this matter, and we feel that the request is very serious.”
My father is the director of a secret government agency, and Mother is the chief investigator?*
*I take it you didn’t know.*
*Indeed, I did not!*
*You Brits are weird, sweetie. You didn’t even know what line of work they did?*
*My love, I truly had no idea, but why does this surprise you? What part of ‘secret government agency’ did you miss?*
Laura was shaken a bit. They frequently tossed affectionate ‘pet names’ (no pun intended) around, but Mystic had never called her ‘My love’. Why did that phrase thrill her and send very pleasant chills down her spine?
*Okay, okay, you’re right, and I apologize.*
*Quick, someone call a historian, notify the press. Laura admitted she’s wrong!*
Laura stuck out her tongue at the cat, which caused a few giggles, and she blushed.
“So what do we do next?” Laura asked for both her and Mystic.
“Well, first we need to confirm that Mystic is the individual we are looking for, formerly known as ‘Taylor Michaels’?”
After a second or so, Laura rattled off Taylor’s address, phone number and official ID numbers. Yes, Mystic had definitely been Taylor. Would the coven be able to restore him?
“It would be very useful if we could locate your sister, Debra.”
“That’s not going to be easy, Ladies. Katherine is very resourceful, and could be very difficult to track down.”
“Perhaps not as difficult as you think, Ms. Martin,” another lady said. Laura didn’t know who she was, but her accent was quite noticeably British. “Her Majesty’s government has several interesting and useful assets in the area, including a detemined young man with a very effective talent for finding things. I’m sure he’s already hard on the heels of your recalcitrant sibling.”
“Mr. King is very good at what he does, I’m told.” Mrs. White confirmed.
Mystic’s ears perked up at the mention of Mr. King’s name.
*Jamie? Jamie’s here?* Her excitement was obvious to Laura.
*You know this man?* She asked.
*Like a brother!* Mystic ‘said’ happily. *He’s a bloody bloodhound! Nothing gets away from Jamie!*
Mystic looked at Mrs. White, then at Laura.
“Mystic wants to know if this means she’ll be restored to her previous form?” Laura asked.
“Yes, that is our intention, once we find Katherine.”
*In that case, you can...tell them to call them off, Laura.*
She could feel the depth of his sadness as it tore her own heart. *But Sweetie, why?*
*I will not leave you, Laura.* She looked deeply into Laura’s eyes, and she could feel the conflict and the determination in Mystic’s soul. *Not for anyone, or anything, my love.*
Laura gently picked up Mystic and hugged her. She didn’t know if it was possible for a cat to cry, but she had enough tears for both of them. Her heart broke as she realized what Mystic was willing to sacrifice.
“Laura, are you okay?” Her mother asked, seeing the tears.
“M-Mystic says to stop the s-search. She refuses to be transformed.”
Everyone stared at the small cat. There was confusion in many of their eyes.
“She won’t leave me, Mom. She won’t. She l-loves me t-too much.”
Debra looked at the dark bundle of fur that was willing to give up her humanity for the love of her daughter, and instead of tears, her heart swelled.
“Laura, you cannot be separated from Mystic if she is restored to her true form. You two are linked, bound together by bonds that can’t be broken.” Mystic looked up, not quite understanding.
Debra smiled, and stroked Mystic. “Don’t worry, dear. If you are transformed back into Taylor, the two biggest changes will be that we can throw away the litter pan and start planning the wedding. Come, relax. I want to meet my son-in-law.”
A Familiar Experience: A DarkRealms Tale
Chapter Four
(Twelve hours later)
Katherine sat in the kitchen chair, refusing to say anything. She just looked at the floor. She was surrounded by two FBI agents, Seargent James King, Mrs. White, Mrs. Conover and Miss Davis from the coven, her sister Debra and niece Laura, who stood with her cat, Mystic in her arms.
“Katherine, you have to reverse your spell. Taylor is not a toy for your amusement! It is forbidden to use Black Magic, let alone changing a sentient being’s physical form!” Mrs. White was quite angry. “Do not force me to use the coven’s magic to get that information. It would be foolishly dangerous for you, but we will get that spell from you.”
“NO, Katherine!” Debra protested, her eyes filled with tears. “That could damage your mind! Please, honey, tell them what they need to know!”
Laura thought that perhaps they were going about this the wrong way. She squatted in front of Katherine and looked her in the eyes. “Aunt Kathy, your gift to me was wonderful, and I love you very much. I also love Mystic, and I don’t think she ever did anything to be punished like this, do you? Please, Aunt Kathy?”
Katherine looked into Laura’s eyes and stroked her hair. “I never meant to hurt anyone, honest, I didn’t!” She looked guiltily at Debra. “I guess I’ve done it again, huh, Debbie?”
“You aren’t a mean person, Kathy, you just don’t think, sometimes. Please, Sis, give us the spell to turn Mystic back into the man she’s supposed to be?”
“I...I’m not sure I know how to do it, and I’m afraid I’ll hurt Laura. I’ll tell you everything I know, and maybe we can do it? I’m really, really sorry, Mrs. White, I am! Please, help me fix this?”
The angry eyes of Mrs. White softened. “Child, it’s as much my fault as yours. We’ve known that you have ‘issues’, and we have done nothing but complain and turn our backs to you. Of course I’ll try to help fix it, but afterwards, you know what we’ll have to do to prevent this kind of thing from happening again.
It’s just become too much, Katherine. The only other transformee we know of was the abusive husband of that teacher, and he has since passed away. Were there any others, Kathy?
“No,” Katherine said quietly. “That man was evil, and he had to be stopped. He was already a pig, I just made his outside look like his insides.”
“She didn’t kill him, of course.” Agent Bowen told James. “The bastard was a thief, murderer and con man, a gentleman on the outside, but a soul as dark as the Devil’s heart. He also had a liver that was eaten up, and was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died of natural causes, and the sickly body was destroyed. Until we discovered this, he was a wanted felon. Hard way to go, but I wouldn’t shed any tears for him.”
“Still, she had no right to do what she did,” Mrs. Conover, a coven member said, angrily.
“I think we can easily argue that she has reduced capacity, Ma’am. I agree she was wrong, but remember, he was in the process of assaulting his wife, very likely with the intent to murder. She didn’t try to kill him, just...stop him.”
Meanwhile, Katherine, Mrs. White and several of the ladies of the coven did what they could to analyze the spell. Katherine told them the spell she had used, and the way she had added to it to get the results she wanted. One of the ladies hypnotized her to help her remember more of the details of the spell.
“If only she could understand the consequences!” Mrs. White told Debra. “She is a genius at creating these spells, so much so that we don’t know the full process needed to reverse it. We’ll have to be very careful, for Taylor’s sake. I don’t want to put him in a worse position!”
“But we can reverse it, right?” Debra asked. “Will it be safe for both of them?”
“That’s the real question, of course. The problem is the modifiers she used. Normally, as you know, the modifiers are arranged so that they are easily nullified. Unfortunately, Katherine not only didn’t use conventional modifiers, she altered them so that reversing them is worse than untangling a ten foot tall knot! There are no visible ‘strings’ to chase down, only the thought processes of a flawed genius. It is frightening to think of what we could do to Mystic and Laura, just by missing one part of what she’s done!”
“There’s no sure way to reverse this, is there?” Laura asked. “What do you think will happen?”
“It’s up to you and Mystic, I think.” Debra said. “It’s a very hard decision, and a horrible, horrible risk.”
Mystic sat on the porch, thinking about her life. She was very frightened and when Laura came to sit with her, she quickly jumped into her lap.
* Laura, I’m scared, I don’t want to die. What if something goes wrong, will it affect you? How linked are we? I wish I could just be sure that everything would be all right.*
*Sorry, love, we have to decide with our hearts.* Laura thought at her, tears running down her face. *I want to be selfish and just stay the way we are. But I also want so badly to be with my true love, to have your children, to live the rest of my life with you.*
*You will always be the most wonderful thing to come into my life. I’ve been thinking heavily about it, and something inside me says I have to try this, love.*
*I-I know. I’m so scared, but I feel it, too, sweetheart. No matter what, I love you and I always will. Let’s go tell them our decision.*
Laura carried Mystic into the kitchen. “We’ve decided, and we’d like to do it, now, please.”
Mrs. White cleared her throat, nervously. “All right. Please, Mystic, stand over here. Forgive me, dears, this could be painful.”
She looked at Laura, but she just nodded, saying nothing. Mrs. White began her spell.
Mystic began to change. The fur disappeared, and she quickly grew in size. There was only a few moans, and Laura, her eyes shut in anticipation of pain, only quietly moaned as well.
There was an odd noise from both of them, and Taylor changed into a more obviously human shape, much to Laura’s happy relief. She ran to the living room and brought back a blanket to cover the lean but healthy looking young man. They looked into each other’s eyes, and she looked away, shyly smiling. He reached for her chin, lifted her lips to his and they kissed. She looked at him with a smile, then threw her arms around him happily and kissed him again.
“Uhm, Laura dear, I’m very sorry, I do love you, but I’m very, very hungry right now, dear. Painfully hungry!”
“We’re ready for you, Taylor.” Debra said. “I’ve got several pizza’s ready for you.”
Katherine, Mrs. White and the members of her cousin smiled and James brought out some sweatpants and a tee shirt. He threw them at the happy couple. Once Taylor had eaten several slices of pizza, he slid the pants on under the blanket, then he and Laura stood and he put on the slightly oversized T-shirt before reaching for more pizza
Eventually, the young couple walked over to James, and Taylor shook his hand.
“Thank you, Jamie,” Taylor said. “It’s so good to see you again. I’d like you to meet my fiancée, Laura Martin. This is Private Jamie King, a very good friend of mine.”
Laura smiled and curtseyed. “Hello, Mr. King, it’s a very great pleasure to meet you!”
James had a charming but mischievous grin as he bowed. “Why, thank you, Ms. Martin, it’s a very great pleasure to know you! Taylor, I’m a Seargent, now, thanks to your parents. You really should call them, sport, they’ve grown a bit lonely for your ugly mug, only God knows why. Give ‘em a ring, once in a while, won’t you?”
“I shall, I shall. Say, I seem to have misplaced my cell somewhere, you wouldn’t happen to have any idea where it could be?”
“You know, I just happen to have come across one quite similar to yours recently, perhaps you may be able to identify it? I’ve charged it completely, on the odd chance that I might run into the owner. Give it a go, then!”
“Good Lord, Jamie, is there anything you can’t find?” He smiled, then took a picture of Laura. “I’ve got to show them the great gal I’m going to marry.” He sent the picture, and then called them. James listened in, and prayed it went well.
“Mum?” He asked. “Yes, Mum. Yes, I’ve missed you, too. How much did Jamie tell you? Yes, a cat, honestly, Mum. Did you get the picture I sent? Yes, she’s very pretty. Her name is Laura, Mum, she’s my fiancée. What? Yes, I’m sure she’d love to. We’ll have to arrange her passport and such. Yes, Mum. Yes, as soon as possible. I don’t know, mum, I’ll have to do some checking, I’m a little out of date right now. Yes, I’ll call as soon as we have some idea of when, all right? I love you, too. Bye, Mum, I’ll talk to you soon.”
“Jamie, how much time do you have until you have to go back to work?”
“I’m not sure, Taylor. I’ve only just started my new job. I’m still learning my new responsibilities. Did your Mum ask for me?”
“No, she never mentioned you. Hey, are you working with her now?”
“Me, working with your Mum? I really can’t say, mate.” Jamie winked.
“Ah, it’s that big bloody secret. Well, the next time you talk to your superior, ask her if you have time to be my best man.” Taylor said with a smile.
Laura walked over to them. “You’re planning the wedding, without me?”
“No, my love, just trying to make sure someone is available. I suspect I know his Superior Officers quite well.”
“Oh, I understand. How did it go with your Mom?”
“Actually, quite splendidly. How would you like to go to England as a honeymoon?”
Laura was a little surprised by the question, but when she thought about it, she found she was very pleased by the idea. “Yes, dear, I’d be very happy to visit England, it sounds wonderful. I think it would be perfect.”
“My parents would really like to meet you, and I told them a little about you.”
“You know I’m a little young to get married in his country, right?”
“You’re over sixteen, so if you have your mother’s permission, it would be all right.”
“That’s right,” Debra said with a smile. “And you definitely have my permission, dear.”
Taylor got down on his knee. “Laura, you know how much I love you. I can never lie to you, because we can see each other’s souls. I am beyond merely in love, dear, you are my life. Please sweetheart, be my wife?”
She knew it was true. If love was a light, Taylor was the sun, shining down on her alone. More importantly, she loved him just as much, and there was never a doubt in her mind.
“Yes, Taylor, more than anything in the world, I want to be your wife.”
“Laura, I am officially one of the happiest men in the world. What kind of wedding do you want, sweetheart?”
Laura smiled. “The fastest kind there is, my love. I think we have time to get to the office to get our license, and then we have three days, unless we go to Las Vegas, and then we could get married tonight, I believe.”
“As tempting as the Vegas idea is, I think the first option would be fine. Let’s get our license, and get things started.”
Back in the kitchen, Katherine faced her fate.
“I hate to do this, Katherine, but you’ve proven you are too irresponsible to be allowed to use your magic.” Mrs. White said. “The rules are quite clear; those who use black magic are to be punished severely. I’m aware of your issues, dear, but I cannot allow that to be an excuse any longer.”
“I will accept whatever the coven demands,” Katherine said quietly.
“Our decision is this. Your magic will be bound, and you will be rendered powerless. Your sister Debra has accepted responsibility for you until we can help you become independent once more.”
The entire coven surrounded her, and after a few minutes the spell was cast, and Katherine was rendered powerless.
“Does this satisfy you, gentlemen? She will never again have the ability to use magic in any capacity. She will be on house arrest for the next two years, and will wear the monitoring device for that time. The coven accepts it's part in the responsibility for this situation, and will provide the funds to hire a tutor to help prepare her for a normal life.”
One of the men stood, “We accept this punishment, and the suggestions of the coven to help Katherine into a stable life. We will monitor the situation in the future. It’s entirely possible that there are resources available that we can help with, and we’ll be in touch. I believe that takes care of everything for now, so we will say farewell, for now, and thank you, ladies, for your cooperation."
The two agents walked out o their car and drove off. Debra was quite surprised. “So that’s it? No arrest, no lawyers?”
Mrs. White smiled. “Debra, under what law is transformation into a cat illegal? Would that be a State or Federal law?”
“But, surely there is something...”
“No dear. Can you imagine the trial for something like that? Or what the media would say? No, there will be no publicity in this case, and no prison time for anyone.”
“But what of Katherine’s accomplice, the Professor?”
“According to her, she was intimidated by Katherine, and felt she had to do as she was told. She has been reprimanded by her employer, and has returned to her work.”
“So, we return to our normal lives?”
“Well, you will have to deal with Katherine’s challenges, but that’s nothing new for you, is it? Then you will need to deal with Laura and Taylor’s situation, and the wedding to come.”
“And now I can put away that cat pan!”
They laughed, and drank some more tea.
Laura and Taylor were outside, walking together, hand in hand. It was quite romantic.
“Tay, honey, you haven’t even started looking for a job yet, how can we consider an apartment? Seriously, love, I know we have to make some plans, and we can’t stay with my Mom for very long, but you need to be realistic.”
“Laura, I’ve never mentioned it, but my parents are very comfortable, and I have a considerable trust fund that becomes mine when I turn 21.”
“But didn’t we have a party for your birthday just a few weeks ago?”
“You know, I do believe you’re correct!” He said, and then laughed as she elbowed him.
“Smartass!” she laughed. “So you’re telling me that you’re loaded?”
“Yes, m’love, I am a charter member of the so-called “idle rich.” I have never been one to enjoy that lifestyle, though, so I have studied to become a geologist. As I’ve told you before, I came here to study under Professor Bernacci, a world famous vulcanologist. She’s the one who sent me to meet Katherine, which got all of this started.”
He stopped and turned to her. “You know, I don’t know if I should be angry or thankful. Without her, we would have never met, and my life would still be bland, boring and unfulfilled. Meeting you was the best thing to ever happen to me, and I don’t regret one minute of my time as Mystic. You are the most amazing, beautiful, wonderful woman in the world. I should get on my knees and thank her for this wondrous gift.”
“You are such a romantic, Tay, and I love it so much!” She kissed him and the look in her eyes gave him a thrill, knowing that this beautiful girl loved him. “Please, don’t ever change.”
“Well, I...oh, wow, that feels odd!” He suddenly shivered.
“What is it, Taylor?”
“My-my body suddenly hurts, like a huge cramp...Aaahhh!” he screamed and fell to his knees.
“Oh, my Goddess! Taylor!” She shrieked as he rolled into a fetal position. It felt like every bone in his body was suddenly, and painfully twisting out of shape, the muscles squeezing together in an incredibly intense spasm. If it hadn’t been so dark, she would have noticed that he was getting smaller, and when she finally did see it, she could tell what was happening, he was reverting to his cat form! “No, please, Taylor!”
Their screams brought everyone out to help. Mrs. White had never seen anything like it...No, wait, she had!
It was Kate Davis that commented first. “By the Goddess, he’s a Were!”
The transformation continued to have it’s way with the young man’s body, and soon a familiar black cat was curling it’s way into Laura’s arms.
“Now what do we do?” She asked, tears of frustration running over her cheeks. Debra smiled.
“It’s not the same thing,” her Mother told her. “Mystic isn’t trapped this way. Taylor’s a were-cat, sweetheart.”
Mrs. White examined him. “Umm, that’s very strange.”
“What is?” Laura asked, worried.
“Mystic is female.” She said, and gave her a puzzled look. “That isn’t possible.”
*Why not? I was female before, what’s so special now?* Mystic said sarcasically in Laura’s mind, which she relayed to her Mother and Mrs. White.
“Well, the first strange thing is that you’re a Lesser Were in the first place!” Debra said.
“But even stranger is the gender change.” The older witch mused. “I’m very curious to see if she’s still female when she changes again.”
*You mean, I can change back? What do I do?*
*Hold on,* Laura said, as she relaxed and stroked the familiar body. *You’ve just made a major transformation. From what I know, you’re going to need food, and maybe a little rest before you change back.*
*I’ll admit, I am quite hungry. Anyone for more pizza?*
In this smaller form, Mystic was only able to get through one large slice of pizza, and then, belly full, she crawled into Laura’s arms, curled up and fell asleep. Laura lay back and relaxed on the sofa, and was soon napping comfortably as well.
By the time she woke, only Katherine, Mrs. White and her mother remained. Mystic was in her favorite spot, on the kitchen table, being stroked by the three women.
“I should have known, you spoiled thing.” Laura said, smiling as she walked into the kitchen. “Always the center of attention, at all times.”
*I love you, too, Darling. We’ve been waiting for you, sleepy-head. Mrs. White has explained that all I need to do is concentrate, and I should be able to change back, so here goes.*
“I told her how to change, but I think she wanted you to be there.” Mrs. White told her.
Out of politeness, Laura said nothing, but merely stood patiently. Slowly at first, Mystic changed once again into the nude form of Taylor. Debra had a blanket and his sweat suit ready, and he quickly changed.
“Much better,” he said. He sat down in a chair, and Laura cuddled up to him in his lap. “Hmmm. I can see why you like this so much. It’s very comfortable,” she said, to the laughter of the other ladies.
“Oh, so many things I could say, my love.” He said, thinking of some inappropriate phrases that came to mind.
Laura looked at him, mischief shining in nher eyes. “Oh Yeah? What’s the matter, cat got your tongue?”
Chapter Five
So now he was a were-cat.
Taylor sat up and put on his shirt. It was still odd, after several months of being a cat, how comfortable it felt to wear clothing again. He reached over for his jeans and pulled them up his legs.
Anyone watching would be amazed at the way he moved. He was unintentionally deliberate, with a natural kind of sinuous grace that would be the envy of the most skilled ballerina. He was slipping on his shoes when she called.
*Taylor, honey, are you coming down for breakfast?*
*Yes, Luv, I’m almost ready. It smells wonderful up here.*
*Thanks. How many eggs would you like?*
“Three should be fine, sweetheart.” He said as he walked into the room, and then quickly caught her as she stumbled back, startled.
“Goddess, you surprised me!” She told him. ”You walk through the house so quietly!” She wrapped him in her arms and gave him a very passionate good morning kiss. Before anything else got started, Laura pushed him back. “Okay, dear, the eggs are going to burn,” she said, turning back to the stove.
He chuckled. “I can’t wait until you try to tell my mother how quiet I am. She’s always said that I have all the grace of a drunken elephant with 3 legs.”
Laura giggled. “I’m sure you weren’t that bad, really.”
“Oh, it would surprise you. I was all arms and legs, and terribly uncoordinated.”
He set a couple of plates and some silverware out for the two of them, then grabbed two of the large juice glasses and the orange juice. Neither of them noticed it, but as they worked together to get the meal ready, they completed the different tasks without discussing them, working as smoothly as a couple with years of experience.
They sat close to each other ate the table, always within reach of the other, and they shared frequent touches and smiles, as if their love was a treasured secret between them.
“I’d like to go for a short walk this morning, would you like to come along?” Taylor asked.
“No, I’m going to help Mother set up a room for Katherine. You go ahead, stretch your legs a bit.”
“I won’t be long,” He said, and kissed her. She watched him until he went around the corner and smiled. She knew it was due to his time as Mystic that he moved the way he did, so unconsciously sensuous.
It made her horny just to watch him walk. They had decided to wait until they were married before they had sex, but he made it so difficult! Two more days, she told herself, just two more days...
She wasn’t sure she could hold out that long. She bit her lower lip slightly, the desire for him rising in her. She closed her eyes and took a couple of deep breaths, trying to get control of herself, but loving the way she felt.
He knew how she was feeling, of course, even if he didn’t realize exactly what it was that was affecting her. Her passion excited him, and he just wanted to carry her into bed and ravish her!
She was beyond beautiful, and he knew that she loved him, but sometimes, in the back of his mind, he wondered how much of her love might be because of the spell that linked them together. He knew that he loved her so much, it made his heart ache, and he swore to himself that he would always do his best for her.
He really wasn’t sure what to think of this “were-cat” thing. Without the issue of being trapped in that form, he had to admit that he truly enjoyed his time as Mystic. How would this affect their lives, though?
His future was on his mind quite frequently lately. He would be a married man soon. It was true, he didn’t need to worry about money. He could easily provide a very comfortable living for the two of them and any children they might have. No, what concerned him was that he needed a challenge in his life, and he wanted to include Laura in whatever it was he did..
He was unsure of just what he should do now. He had been so focused on geology before all of this, but his world had become so different now, and he wasn’t sure how he fit into it. So many things were so new and, to be honest, supremely strange! He could never have dreamed the world could be so different.
Where he and Laura would settle was another concern. Finson was a comfortable place, with its own kind of relaxed atmosphere, but was it enough for him? It suddenly occurred to him that he could talk to his fiancée at any time, and he should involve her in any decision he made.
*Yes, you should! It’s about time, Taylor! I’ve been quietly listening to you for some time. I’ve got a few things you need to hear, mister, and the first one is about that idea of yours that I love you because of the spell. You listen to me, buster, and listen good. I love you with all of my heart! You are my whole world, Taylor, and I need you in my life!*
*I do understand that, my darling, and I feel the same way. I’m just so overwhelmed by you. You’re so beautiful and wonderful, it’s just a little staggering.*
*I’m flattered, love, but you need to understand how much I feel the same! You’re handsome, smart, and so sophisticated. Watching you makes my panties wet, my dear. I can’t wait to marry you and get you in the sack, I’m going to wear you out so bad!*
He shivered in anticipation. He could feel her desire, and he was just as stimulated as she was. He decided to sit down for a while, before someone saw him tenting his pant. Laura just laughed, of course.
*Oh, that’s embarrassing!*
*(giggles)*
*Well, as long as I’m just sitting here, I have a question for you.*
*Where ever you are, wherever you go.*
*I think you should let me ask the bloody question before you answer it!*
*(giggles) I’m sorry, honey, but you were thinking so loudly. In my honest opinion, I think that you’re right. Finson is a great place, but it’s too small for you. We were already planning on taking our honeymoon in England anyway, perhaps we should go with an eye towards relocating.*
*You would do that... for me? I love you, so much!*
*Oh, sweetheart, don’t you think I can feel how much you miss England? It’s a part of you, and I want to know more about that part.*
*You are wonderful, and I have every intention of spending a great deal of time very soon introducing your to several of my parts, repeatedly and in intimate detail.*
*You’re not making this any easier for me!*
*Yeah? Well I’m the one still sitting against this tree, Luv.*
*Oh, I can take care of that, baby.*
*And I can hardly wait until you do!*
*You’re naughty. No, I’ll fix this right now. Is your phone handy?*
*Yes, of course.*
*Call your Mom. She needs to know about this ‘were-cat’ business.*
*Yes, I do believe that’s done it. All right, I worry that it might put her off, but you’re right, I need to call and talk to her. I’ll be home soon.*
*All right, dear.*
He wasn’t looking forward to this conversation. He pushed his speed dial, and heard the long series of tones.
“Hello, Michaels' Residence.”
“Hello, Mother.”
“Taylor? Oh, this is a pleasant surprise. How are you feeling, Darling?”
‘That’s sort of why I’ve called, Mother. There have been some...developments.”
“Oh? Is everything all right?”
“That’s rather hard to say, as it really is dependent on you, and if you will accept me.”
“Of course I will accept you, dear, nothing in the world could ever change that.”
“I believe this falls into the realm of your employment. Yes, I’ve heard of the work you and Father do, and I have to say that I’m quite proud of you, even if I can never say anything about it.”
“Taylor, I-“
“Wait, Mum, please. I need to continue. When I was returned to human form, it seems there were a few unexpected consequences. As I understand it, the witch who transformed me was some sort of idiot-savant, and the spell she used was quite unusual. I was restored to my true form, but with a slight issue. We’ve discovered that I am a Were, Mother.”
“That’s not possible. We don’t have the genes to become Were.”
“Yes, I’ve been told that, many times. I’ve also been reliably informed by the local coven that it’s impossible for a witch to turn someone into a Were. Nonetheless, it is a fact. I am a Were-cat, Mum. I am able to return to my form as Mystic at will.”
“Jamie reported that Mystic was a female cat. Is this transformation of yours complete?”
“Yes, Mum, Mystic is female, and yes, I’ve been told that this is impossible as well.”
“It’s certainly highly improbable, but apparently not impossible. Are you otherwise healthy, darling?”
“It seems so, although there are a few other things we need to discuss. Mother, did Jamie
tell you that my fiancée is a witch?”
“Yes, and quite a beautiful and intelligent one, according to Jamie. He said she is a perfect match for you.”
Taylor smiled. Thanks, Jamie, I owe you one.
“Well she’s certainly beautiful, but she’s marrying me, so I’m not sure of her intelligence.”
*Watch it, sweetheart, I am listening.*
*Yes, I know.*
*Wait until you get home, you stinker!*
Their mental conversation happened much faster than a normal one, so Laura’s interruption went unnoticed.
His mother laughed. ”Taylor, I’m sure that her love shows her to be quite intelligent, and besides, I trust Jamie’s report.”
“The reason I bring it up is that part of the spell I was under links Laura and I together permanently. Fortunately, we happen to be quite besotted with each other, so that’s not an issue. One of the side-effects of this is that we have a permanent telepathic link between us, so in effect, Laura is a part of this conversation, as well.”
“She is? Welcome to our family, darling! Duncan and I look forward to meeting you soon!”
*Ooh, give her my thanks, please, and tell her I can’t wait to meet them!”*
“She say’s thank you, Mother, and she’s quite anxious to meet you as well. Mother, we’ve been discussing our future, and we are considering relocating to England. I’m just wondering, do you know if the Ander’s estate is still available?”
“Of course it is, dear. In this economy, no one is interested in...Oh, are you thinking of purchasing it?”
“Yes, Mum. Would you act as my agent and set things in motion? As soon as Laura’s passport is ready, we’ll be on our way there.”
“Consider it done, dear. We will see you soon, then?”
“As soon as possible, yes. We’ll probably need to stop with you for a bit, if that’s all right?”
“You have to ask? Taylor, this will always be a home to you, always.”
“Thanks, Mum. We will see you soon. We love you!”
The phone call ended, Taylor’s mother decided to make several phone calls. She hadn’t considered it before, but this information changed everything in her mind. This could be quite interesting. It certainly had created some possibilities.
A Familiar Experience 6: A Dark Realms Tale
Taylor was nervous. In itself, this was hardly new. Grooms have been nervous since time immemorial. It wasn’t that he wasn’t sure, of course. Taylor was truly in love with Laura, and he had no doubts on the score. He was impatient for things to get the whole thing over with, but he knew that weddings were really for the bride. He chuckled. Honeymoons were for the groom, he told himself.
*Patience, my love. Honeymoons are for the bride, as well!* She giggled.
*Well, that’s hardly fair!* He chuckled. *Is there nothing for the Groom, then?*
*Well, of course there is, Silly!*She said. *Someone has to pay the bills, Darling.*
He laughed out loud. He knew this was an excellent match. Laura made his heart light. She had a wonderful, quick mind, and a sense of humor that promised to make their marriage an extremely happy one.
She had insisted that it was bad luck for them to see each other before rhe ceremony, which left him and his best man Jamie to welcome the guests, mingle, and keep everything flowing smoothly as they waited for darkness so they could begin the ceremony.
He may not have been able to see his bride as they waited, but they were in constant communication, and he frequently had a hard time keeping a straight face after one of her pointed comments. She seemed to be doing her best to make him laugh at an inconvenient time.
*Be nice, dear! You’re making it very difficult to maintain my highly practiced facade of controlled British composure...but that’s exactly what you’re doing, isn’t it, Laura?*
*Wow, I can’t put one over on you at all, can I?*
*Someone is doing her best to earn an over the knee paddling!*
*Careful, Love. I AM a witch, after all.*
*Would you like to wake up to dead mice in your bed, Sweetheart?*
*Truce, darling, truce!*
*Thank you, my love.*
Laura knew he wasn’t bluffing. She could see in his mind exactly where the best mice were, and she knew his sense of humor.
Taylor moved to his appointed spot near the bonfire, and as Laura joined him, he was struck with her beauty. There was something quite familiar about her dress, but he couldn’t think of where he had seen it before. He loved the updo and the baby’s breath in her hair, and little hanging curls. With her 'off the shoulder' dress, it made her neck look incredibly
long, just like his mother had looked for her...
*Yes, it’s your mother’s dress, dear. She had it sent here express, and it fit perfectly. I hope you like it.*
*Like it? You are absolutely gorgeous, Laura. I love your hair like that. You are beauty personified, dear.*
*Why thank you my love. Now smile and focus, baby.*
Mrs White and two other witches led the group, as they guided everyone into a circle surrounding the couple. Laura and Taylor had chosen a simple and uncomplicated ceremony, in two parts. They held each other’s hands and repeated their simple vows to each other.
On this day
I bring my heart
To stand with yours.
New lives to start
Our promises made
‘Til death we part
As we will
So mote it be
Now and forever.
And then, while everyone held their candles before them, and the flames of the bonfire crackled and burned away the darkness, Mrs. White and her assistants led the ceremonial blessing.
This Circle we surround,
With our love, and with our power.
Protect and guide our purpose,
And the work we do this hour.
We hold the light, Embrace the night,
To watch and wait and see.
With all our arts, We tie these hearts
As we will, so mote it be.
There was a small reception, where Taylor and Laura greeted their guests and had a wonderful time. There weren’t very many people, perhaps as a result of her being a witch
After the reception, as they sat around her mother’s table, they found that they were all very tired. Katherine was the first to go to bed, then Donna yawned and followed soon after, wishing Taylor and Laura a good night with a little smirk.
They knew that everyone would be disappointed, but it was quite apparent that they were both too tired to consummate their marriage. They both undressed and fell into the comfortably large bed, quickly falling to a deep sleep.
The following morning Katherine woke to squeals of laughter and the sounds of two newlyweds having fun. She smiled and went to the kitchen. Donna greeted her with an English muffin and a cup of coffee.
“They woke you too?” Katherine asked.
“No, I’ve been up for some time.” Donna smiled. “They make such a good, happy couple.”
“Yeah, they do.” Seeing a tear in her sister’s eye, Katherine hugged her. “Are you all right?”
“I know they need to go out on their own, it’s just going to be so far away,” Donna sobbed. “I worry so much!”
“They’ll be fine,” Katherine said. “We have something else to worry about.”

The warm afternoon found Laura on the hammock in the backyard. Mystic was asleep on her stomach, enjoying the shady spot with her. Every so often, Laura would stroke Mystic’s side. As the afternoon progressed and the shade receded, Mystic stretched out, and jumped down, then she bent and stood up as Taylor, who kissed his wife and woke her before her pale skin could burn.
“Ah, that’s the way to wake up from a nap!” Laura said, climbing out of the hammock.
“I have to agree,” Taylor told her. “We’ll definitely be installing one of these in a good spot on the estate when we got to England, although I don’t know how often we’ll get to use it.”
“Oh? Why is that?” Laura asked. “They don’t have many sunny days in England?”
“It’s actually not as bad as you might think,” He said. “We do get quite a few foggy days, because of the climate and England’s situation, bit it’s not terrible. No, I just get the feeling that Mother has some plans for us.”
“Plans? What kind of plans?”
“A were-cat with a telepathic link to a witch? Considering her and Father’s positions, I would be surprised if it hasn’t occurred to her that we could be of great help to her.”
“Oh, I had already thought about suggesting we volunteer to assist them. I’m sure our abilities would be very valuable, perhaps as investigators.”
“Let us never mention the word volunteer, love. I fully intend to drag as many euros out of them as their budget will allow.” He laughed. “After all, it’s not as if they can find another team like us.”
“You are naughty, dear.” Laura giggled. “But you’re also right. We will have a large home to maintain.”
“There is a question I haven’t thought to ask until just now,” Taylor said, looking thoughtful.
‘Really? I wonder if it’s the same one I’ve been thinking of?” Laura smiled. “Who's paying the bills?”
“Exactly. Is this Scotland Yard, or could we be looking at an Interpol operation?”
“We may not see our home much, in other words.” Laura smiled.
“Indeed.” Taylor said with a smile. “This could be a great deal of fun!”
A Familiar Experience
Part 7 - Final Chapter
— A DarkRealms Story
Taylor Michaels sat in his room in Shrewsbury, England,
His life is about to change, he just doesn't know it yet! |
![]() |
“I can’t believe it, Tay! I’m actually in England! This is so cool, and I can’t wait to meet your family!”
“There isn’t really a great deal of family to meet, love. As you know, I’m an only child, and I don’t have a great deal of extended family. I was a late child and I only have one grand parent left, my mother’s mother, Elaine. She lives in a home for the elderly, as she has some medical issues, but you will meet her soon. My father, Duncan Michaels, is an orphan and a very reserved man, and I’ve told you how I felt alienated from my parents.
Helen Michaels, my mother, has two younger sisters, my Aunt Penelope (Penny) and her husband Uncle Lawrence, and my Aunt Millicent (never Millie, please) and Uncle Hubert. I should be surprised if they were there to welcome us, as we are not a close family.”
Eventually, they pulled into a drive that led to a gate. Taylor pushed a series of buttons and the gate opened, so he continued to drive up to a large brick home. They went in and Laura was surprised at the size of the rooms. They seemed rather smaller than she would have expected. A girl in a grey dress that ended below her knees, wearing a white apron and a white cap met them. She looked to be not much older than Taylor.
“Good evening, welcome home Sir, Ma’am.”
“Hello Annie, this is my wife, Laura, and this jewel is Mum’s maid, Annie Smithers.” Annie blushed and curtsied. “Are my parents home?”
“Yes, Sir, your mother is in the sitting room.”
“Thanks, Annie. Well, are you ready to meet the family?”
“Lead on, MacDuff!”
Taylor groaned at her joke, and then he took her hand and led her into a nicely sized room with a pleasantly crackling fire in a brick fireplace. Taylor’s mother, a smiling, slim, gray/blonde haired woman about Taylor’s height stood to greet them with hugs.
“Oh, I am so glad you’re home,” She told Taylor. “And you, Laura my darling, are more beautiful than the boys have told me. Please, call me Mum, dear. I hope your trip was pleasant?”
“Oh yes, I’ve found it fascinating. I’ve never traveled before, so this is all very new to me.”
“Is Father not here, Mum?” Taylor asked.
“No, he was called to London, but I expect him soon, as he is most interested to see you and your bride.”
“I look forward to meeting him as well.” Laura said, and she yawned. “Oh, I’m sorry, Mum, I wasn’t expecting that.”
“No need, dear, you’ve had a long trip here. Taylor I’ve had the Blue room set up for the two of you, why don’t you take your lovely bride and get settled, dear?”
Taylor gave his Mum a quick kiss on the cheek, and then led Laura to their room. He made sure she was comfortably asleep, and then he transformed into Mystic and made her way to the reading room. She brushed up against Helen’s ankles and purred.
“Oh, how did you...Taylor?”
“Meraow!” Mystic jumped into her lap and let herself be stroked.
“Oh, you’re beautiful, dear! Such lovely fur, it’s so soft.” Mystic purred and made herself comfortable.
Annie appeared to announce lunch, and saw the cat on her mistresses’ lap.
“I surprised they didn’t mention any pets.” Annie said, and she shivered. “I’ve never liked cats. They’re too sneaky!”
“Oh, I suspect you might feel differently about this one, Annie.” She knew about the crush Annie had for Taylor before he went to America and found such a gorgeous bride. “You’ll probably see her fairly frequently, at least until Taylor’s new home is ready.”
Annie turned, mumbling something about a litter box.
Mystic meowed and jumped down, then went to their room, where she transformed back to Taylor, dressed and then walked back to the reading room.
“What did you think Mum?”
“I think you’re really going to confuse poor Annie, but I have to admit, seeing that gives me ideas. Work related ideas. I’m going to call Jamie and ask him to dinner tonight. I think we need to talk.”
Dinner was excellent, a very tasty roast, cooked with a collection of vegetables, and followed by an excellent apple pie. After they finished everyone gathered in the Reading room.
“Laura,” Helen asked, “Taylor and Jamie have told me that you’re a witch, and from what I know of witches, you would still be a novice, correct?”
“Yes, Mum,” Laura agreed. “My mother has been training me for approximately four years. I have memorized several spells, and I am continuing my training with my mother by teleconference, once we get settled.”
“Feel free to use the computer in our library, or see Annie, and she hook your lapt3op up to our wireless network,” Helen suggested.
“That would be helpful. Taylor and I discussed the possibility of working for you in your official capacity. Do you think we could be helpful, Mum?”
“Yes, dear, as a matter of fact, I had planned to suggest just such an arrangement, but with the addition of Jamie. The three of you could be a team, helping to investigate suspected paranormal activity. It may be real or completely fraudulent, but to protect our country, we must do our best to investigate and, where possible, explain and control these phenomena.
It is my suggestion that Sergeant King lead the team, officially, but I realize that the logistics will be very informal. Your talents and abilities will need to be understood between you as well, so try to let Jamie deal with the day to day distractions and work with him to find the best way of operating. We will set up a budget for you, and do our best to keep you technologically up to speed.”
Taylor and Jamie looked at each other with sly smiles, while Laura simply looked at Helen.
“Boys and their toys,” She said, and the ladies giggled at the guys’ reaction of feigned innocence.
“We need the proper tools, Laura!” Jamie insisted while Taylor just laughed.
A bright beam of light cut short the joviality, as the sound of an approaching helicopter grew closer. It came to rest behind the house, and Laura saw a man coming towardss the door. As he approached she could see that he resembled an older, more distinguished Taylor. This must be her new Father-in-law. He was obviously a much darker, more serious man than her husband. He walked up to embrace Helen, and then he smiled and held out his hands to Laura.
“Welcome to the family, Laura.” As she walked up, she saw behind the seriousness an excitement and a spark of the charm that Taylor had, and she decided she liked him. Reassured, she walked over and kissed his cheek.
“Thanks, Daddy!” she said, and Taylor bent over with laughter at her impertinence. Soon everyone was chuckling, and Helen knew it was the perfect beginning to their new relationship.
Duncan smiled, but he quickly became serious. “I hope I can count on you three right away. We appear to have a puzzling problem, right into your bailiwick.”
James looked at Taylor, who nodded.
“Yes, sir, my team is ready, sir!”
“Good man, well done.” He sat down in a comfortable chair and pulled some papers from a briefcase. “There have been several small but important and impossible thefts at the home of the head of security. This is our chance to demonstrate our new team’s effectiveness. James, I want you to focus on locating the items on this list, while Mystic goes in as recognizance and Laura handles communications. I’ve assured everyone that we will be professional and provide some answers for these incursions as soon as possible, so do your best.”
“Rest assured, sir, we’ll answer some of your questions as quickly as we can.”
“Very well, Sergeant, take the heli, your transportation in London is arranged, good luck, all.”
“Thank you. Sir.”
They watched the new team depart, and Helen turned to her husband. “They’ll be a good team, Duncan.”
Of course they will. Lord help us, if she’s anything like they are, they won’t allow themselves to fail.” He smiled.
