Sunshine Studio, Wichita, Kansas:
“Guys, take a break.” Timmy was helping The Rattlers with recording their first album.
Rustie had given him a call because they were close friends, and he was good at arranging music and recording. He also did DJ jobs on the side to go to engineering school. He had a natural talent for music and could only play simple instruments.
They have been at it since five in the morning, and it is now two in the afternoon. Timmy went to pick up his Red Bull can and realized it was empty. He opens his small cooler to grab another Red Bull out of it.
As Lou walks out of the recording booth, he looks over towards Timmy, “Are we sounding that bad?”
“No, but it could be better. Something doesn’t sound right with the song.” Timmy didn’t like how it sounded.
“Any suggestions on how to fix it?” Rustie had just walked out of the recording booth and heard everything.
“Let me play around with the song. I have a few ideas that might help.” Timmy knew something was missing from it, but he couldn’t put his finger on it.
“How about the other songs, are they good or do we need to do more to them?” Lou wanted to know how their songs were so far.
“Guys, the songs you have already recorded are fabulous. Two of them should hit the top ten in no time. It’s just this song called Boogie, Woogie, Shaggy, Waggie that needs some tweaking. The beat and tone are great, but it needs more.”
“Okay, hey, we're going to order some food. What would you like?” Russell hands a takeout menu to Timmy.
“Don’t hold back, Timmy. We’re paying for the food and whatever drinks and snacks you want.” Rustie knew Timmy was doing this as a favor to her.
“Thanks.” Timmy makes his selection.
Jason places the order for them. Afterwards, he motions to Rustie to come with him into the booth. He just had an idea for the next song.
While Russell, Timmy, and Lou wait for the food to be delivered. Jason and Rustie practice a new riff for the song, and it turns out better than what they already had. When they ended playing the song.
“That was outrageous.” Timmy’s voice comes over the speaker in the recording booth.
Jason gives Timmy the thumbs up. He looks towards Rustie, “I think we have it now.”
“I agree.” Rustie wipes her guitar down and stands it up in the rack.
“Guys, lunch is here.” Russell sticks his head into the booth.
“Good, I’m hungry.” Rustie and Jason walk out of the booth and join the others in the lounge, where the food has been set up.
Rustie was enjoying the taco salad she ordered. She noticed Russell and Lou ordered fully loaded steak sandwiches. Jason was enjoying a loaded hoagie, and Timmy was eating a huge roast beef sandwich.
Timmy was halfway through his sandwich when the solution to the problem he was trying to solve hit him like a ton of bricks. He puts his sandwich down and rushes back to the recording equipment and adjusts a few buttons and slides.
Rustie saw Timmy put his sandwich down and run out of the lounge. She wonders what just happened. She stops eating and follows Timmy to the sound booth and notices he is adjusting the slides and pressing some special effects buttons. She also hears the song they had been trying to tweak.
“So, that’s why you rushed from the lounge.” Rustie walks over and sits down next to Timmy.
“Yep, what do you think?” Timmy finishes adding the additional tune to the song and plays it.
The other guys come walking into the engineering booth and hear the song. Russell starts bobbing his head back and forth and snapping his fingers. Jason starts doing his funky dance moves and enjoys the song as well.
“That is perfect, Timmy.” Rustie hugs Timmy and places a kiss on his cheek.
Timmy couldn’t believe what Rustie just did. He looks at her with a stunned look on his face. He watches as she walks away and back towards the lounge.
After everyone eats and gets back to work. They continue working on their first album. By midnight, the album was completed and sent off to
Black Label Productions. The Masters would be shipped overnight to the production company later in the day.
Jason drops Rustie off at home. Just before Rustie exits from Jason’s car, she looks at him, “I can’t believe we finished our first album.”
“Me neither, but it cost us all of our recording time we won.” Jason was hoping to save it for a while.
“I know, but at least we didn’t have to spend any of our money. Thanks for the ride, Jason.”
“Any time, Rustie.” He watches as she walks towards the front door and enters.
Jason drives off after making sure Rustie got to her house. He covers up a yawn as he heads towards his own house. He was going to sleep in tomorrow.
Rustie takes her clothes off and just lets them litter the floor of her bedroom. She walks across the hallway without covering up and takes her makeup off. She still hated wearing that outfit Mr. Carangi gave her to perform in. Being the cover band for several groups made them some decent money.
Hopefully, now that their first album is done. They can relax for a few days. She knows that will be impossible, because they were going to have to promote their album. She sets the temperature for a shower and steps under the water.
Rustie spends a lot of time in the shower. She was enjoying the hot water as it hit her skin. When the water starts turning cold. She gets out and dries off.
By the time she dries her hair and puts her nightgown on. She was feeling the long day. She lies down on her bed and falls into a deep sleep.
