"Mum I can't possibly do this. " Alex she told her quietly, horror evident in his voice. His mother standing next to him in their little combined kitchen and dinning room, snorted in rye amusement.
"Sure you can, honey, its not to like I’m asking you to work in that seedy sex store or anything. Its a very nice shop in a perfectly nice part of town, the stores owned by the mother of a girl who goes to your school, in fact I am fairly certain that she is in your class, Tracy Miller. Tracy and her friends often help out there when they are able, if it was so bad, I can’t imagine that Tracy would be allowed to do that.”
“That's all fine and good mum, but Tracy is a girl and the shop exclusively sells women’s clothes,” Alex self-consciously tucked a stray strand of long blonde behind his ear, it had somehow escaped his pony tail, which was tied back in a only slightly feminine low pony tail using the plainest black hair bobble Alex had been able to find. He had justified the bobble to himself by arguing that it was more practical than string or a boot lace. Alex outright refused to consider eleastic bands after hes had be heard how much they can damaged the hair.
Alex knew exactly the sex shop that his mother was referencing, only a street away from the clothing store it was called dark temptations and prominently displayed a riding crop in the window. Alex had heard the crude remarks of local boys as they went past it, although few dared to stay close by for long. While a component of that fear was based on their peers, most of it was fear of the shop’s young owner Tasha McFarland. Daughter of a wealthy property developer, Tasha had left the same secondary school that Alex was currently attending and had begun buying up an unused property in the town centre, two years later dark temptations had begun trading.
Tasha McFarland was well known to have a fiery temper and a no-nonsense attitude, an attitude that had sparked a legendary encounter four years ago. The story went that when Tasha had heard a group of boys picking on a girl and being overly pushy outside her shop she had not only raced outside to defend the girl but had told the boys that unless they apologised to the girl and immediately changed attitude towards women she would arm the girl and any of the girls friends that might wish for them with whips like the one in her shop window and further would teach the girls how to used them to the greatest effect on the troublesome boys. Doubtless the tale was largely apocryphal but it still resulted in most of the roving groups of boys giving the store a wide birth.
Althoughs most of the inhabitants of the small town fained horror at dark temptations it had remained open for several years indicating that despite the seeming majority disgust it must be have at least some clientel, possible even from the ranks of the disgusted majority.
Alex in a rare moment of belligerency decided to add to his comment telling the his mother that he would rather work at dark temptations than Tracy's mothers shop. While it sounded like a good idea in Alex head it certainly proved not to be when after he said those words his mother, usually a placid woman became irate.
“Over my cold dead body mister. No child of mine will go any where near that... that," Here the woman was fairly spitting with pent up anger and disgust. “That den of iniquity, it’s not a fit place, you here all sorts of stories and sore did goings on. It's owned by that supposed buisness ticoon Tasha something. I would no want you or your sister working there or indeed anywhere near her. " She paused now to catch her breath, the outburst now a spent force. Alex unsure how to react to all of that, wisely stayed silent, waiting.
“Worst of all, you annoying child, you have got me thoroughly worked up for nothing. I am not asking you to get a job any anywhere, Lilly, Tracy’s mother has been asking around, she needs some help in her shop for a few days, apparently she expected one of her daughters friends would help out but has had no takers at this point, she has been asking round local parents as well but hasn’t gotten any positive responses. Lilly asked me if either you or your sister would be interested, I told her that I was sure one of you would. I thought that your sister would probably want to do it but I had forgotten that she would be busy helping out Mrs Martines with the theatre production but your available and really it will only be a few days, it would get you out the house and keep you out of trouble. "
Alex sighed and resisted arguing any further, it was hopeless, arguing with his mother was always futile. He wanted to argue that he too was part of the theatre production, but it would have been a hollow point. His own part was a few meagre lines while his sister, Tasha, was the assistant director he really couldn't, however much he might wish to, argue that, that was the same work load. He wanted to argue that he was swamped with school revision, but he knew his mother would know that wasn't true. No, he was stuck, tomorrow he would begin a Christmas of working in a woman's clothing store and Alex knew that before new year all of the school bullies would know it too. As soon as they knew any last shred of Alex's manhood and dignity would be instantaneously burned away after what they already called him and did to him already, Alex's shuddered to think what they might do to him then.
"Hi Alex, " Lilly, Tracy's mother, called as he entered the store Alex was still annoyed and more than anything wanted to grunt monosyllabically at her cheery greeting, but Lilly’s smile was infectious and Alex found himself smiling instead polity back at her, regardless of his previous intentions. “It's mostly just moving stock around, organising it and stuff, Tracy's down in the stock room/basement, she will show you what to do it’s just this way."
Alex nodded and followed Lilly's directions down to the basement. The staircase located off to the side of the till area wound down in a spiral until it emerged into a roomy basement, the basement was not dark but was fully enclosed and the only source of light case came from several overhead electric lights evenly spaced to give an equal distribution of light, even if that light was not quite enough to make the space seem bright, the effect was a cavernous and not exceptionally well lit space. An effect, Jack realised as he glanced about, that was not exactly helped by the size of the basement. Lilly's shop was by no means massive but it wasn't small either and the basement was every inch as large a space as the shop above it.
“Hi Alex, mum told me she would send you to down here as soon as you arrived.”
Alex could only manage a nod and a smile so taken a back was he to be talking to Tracy and be her sole focus of attention. She was beautiful or at least that’s what Alex thought and he knew that the he was far from the only one in his school who thought so. Tracy had long strawberry blonde hair, almost as long as Alex's but unlike Alex she tended to either let it loose, like she had today, or gathered up by an array of different coloured scrunchies. An array that Alex couldn't help but feel jealous of considering his dower and bland collection of plain black bobbles. Tracy was about the same size as Alex although she was slightly taller, Alex was quite short for a boy being the shortest boy in his class by no small margin.
“Come on, there's no need to be shy now, we know each other already and there are no adults around here now. Why don't we get a cup of tea before we start." Tracy gestured over to a small table to the best of the stairs that held a small kettle and four cups.
Things got easier between the two and before long they were chatting together cradling warm cups of hot tea in their hands.
“My job, ours now, is to go through all this." Tracy did her best to gesticulate towards the other end of the room while still cradling her tea.
While one half of the large room, the half Tracy and Alex were standing in, was clear and quite empty, the other half of was a cluttered jumble. A combination of clothes racks packed with clothes and large cardboard boxes, either laying on their own or stacked haphazardly.
The horror of the immensity of the task must have shown on Alex's face because Tracy immediately set off giggling, which at once set off Alex as well.
“Yeah, my mum isn't the best at dealing with old stock and stuff. Everything that it isn't sold kinda just gets shoved down here, mum always says she will go through it and put some of the stock back out as discounted sale stuff but she never does, it just sits here, where mum left it after carefully packing it up. Mum wants us to go through all of this, sort it, catalogue it, and label some of it. Mum's also no so great with social media, like not good at all, so she has agreed to let me handle some of that as well, especially if we find any old stock that might sell well now. "Tracy explained excitedly.
“Those boxes over there, I was told not to touch. They’re one of mum’s latest hair brained schemes,” Tracy went on will a smirk. “She gets things in her head every once in a while, ideas as to how to increase profits, how to advertise something better, that sort of thing, usually they don't work out but occasionally they do.”
“What's this one?" Alex asked eagerly he had been following Tracy’s fast paced flowing speech avidly but had been completely unable to find anywhere to interject.
“Oh, this one, this one, ok this one might be good, even I think this might work, although like with most of mum's plans it’s difficult to work out if it’s a game changer or just another failed experiment. So, the stores a women's shop, right, so mum thinks that is we feature a few women’s books in one of the windows and a small bookcase along the right wall, it might help to boast sales. You know, you’re walking around the town shopping checking out the best deals and sales, you see some really nice books in the window, go in to investigate and come out with the book as well as a bag of clothes because while you were in there looking at the book you saw that cute top that you just had to have.” Tracy so excitedly announced, subconsciously setting down her empty tea cup in order to better talk with her hands.
“Book's, isn't this a clothing shop?" Alex asked doubtful.
"That's what I said, at first, but mum explained it to me and now I’m not so sure that it’s a bad idea. So, it’s like this, mum thinks that the primary thing about the shop is that it is aimed at women, women’s clothes, women’s fashions. So, when she is doing the book thing all the books would be aimed at women as well. Five different ones to start out with just as a test, if it doesn’t work, we don’t have to continue the test, and if it does work then mum was saying that she might up that number next time. If it works mum was thinking she could get new books in every two to three months or so. The authors wouldn't have to be women but the books would need to be aimed at women, although I think all of the test five are. A couple of them live quite close by so mum has asked if any of them with come and sign some of the books for them. So far, no responses, but, it would be major for mum if they did, I mean can you imagine.”
They chatted together for a bit longer before getting down to work. As they began opening boxes Tracy warned Alex.
“At some point when the store is not too busy Mum is going to want to show you how to operate the till. It is just precautionary, Mum likes everyone in the store to be able to work behind the counter just in as case they need to. It's happened with to everyone my friends. Whenever I bring anyone here, mum always tries to teach them, half of them are still scared that if they comeback mum will either test them or force them to work.” Tracy laughed, then noticing the agitation on Alex's face and his eyes full of fear at the prospect, Tracy's tone softened to one of gentle reassurance.
“It will be fine. Really there is nothing to worry about, it’s pretty difficult to mess up and I doubt mum will ever actually ask you to serve a customer anyway. At least not on your own, without her present, supervising. It's just so you would know what to do if you ever did have to or want to.”
The two had in fact only just gotten started when Tracy's prediction came true in what was apparently the first none busy moment Lilly had, had since Alex had entered the store Lilly called them back up to the store so as to give to primarily Alex instruction on all things till related. While the instruction was geared towards Alex, Tracy was called to join, her mother never missing the opportunity for a refresher. Despite Lilly's efforts, the instruction had to be brief and delivered in-between customers. The brevity was a double-edged sword for Alex, on the one hand after only a few minutes of instruction his head felt like it might explode with all the extra information, on the other hand Alex felt that he really wanted to continue, there was so much he didn't know that was vital behind that till. Sure, there was the basics but there was so much more to learn; like what styles of clothes to recommend, what the clothing styles were called, which types of skirt went with which kinds of top and why. There was just so much for Alex to learn and that alone seemed to light a passion within him to try to find out about everything he didn’t know.
Tracy immediately picked up on that eagerness of to learn and while she did find it slightly odd for a boy to be so interested in women’s clothing styles, Tracy merely filed that away in her brain for later. So, as they went through the boxes, which really was laborious and tedious work, the two struck up a conversation about fashion and styles of clothes. Tracy teaching Alex as they worked. Tracy within minutes forgot that Alex wasn't also a girl and subconsciously she began talking to Alex the same way she would any of her girlfriends, a fact that Tracy would only realise much later.
Tracy had a system figured out with the boxes that she happily and quickly shared with Alex. This system operated in stages, first Tracy would open a box and take out anything inside the box, the contents that had been removed were then sorted through, next Tracy would take a picture of each individual style of outfit contained in the box, fourthly a description was noted down in the little notebook Tracy kept beside her, as well as the amount of that design in the box, Tracy would then assign each box a number which she marked in large on the side of the box, finally the boxes contents was then carefully replaced into the box before the box was resealed with packing tape as if it had never been opened. If the same design of clothing had already been found in a different box Tracy would note that down including the other boxes number.
While the initial intention was for Alex to independently process boxes alongside Tracy following her method, the pair soon decided that, that would just get to confusing very quickly and would probably just result in them both slowing each other down. Instead, the pair agreed to work collaboratively on one box at a time, with Alex handling the pictures and Tracy the note pad. This was far more companionable, than the other method and much faster than when Tracy was doing this by herself.
They were progressing nicely now several boxes in when the call that Tracy had claimed was incredibly unlikely came. Lilly called down to the two teens requesting that one of them come up to the shop, Alex quickly went up to investigate what Lilly wished to tell them and sound himself in the positively terrifying position that only a couple of hours ago he had dreaded and had been assured was very unlikely to occur. Alex was going to be behind the counter facing customers and serving them without even Lilly to help. Lilly told Alex that she had to rush out for a few minutes but would be back as soon as she could. Lilly tried to reassure the petrified teen that Tracy would be only a shout away if he needed anything but it did little to calm his nerves at the prospect.
Alex was insanely nervous as the first woman nervous approached the counter but after the first couple of customers he realised that his previous concerns were incredibly foolish. His new-found realisation made Alex more confident that he could do this and by the four customer he was chatting amicably with the woman as he rang up her purchases.
Tracy hurried to finish the box they had been working on as soon as Alex had been called away. She had a feeling that whatever he had been called away for would be well outside of Alex's comfort zone and that she would be needed very soon. Still Tracy was not comfortable leaving a box only half done in case she lost track of what she had and had not done. Tracy's certainty that she was needed in the shop grew with every moment that Alex did not return. So as soon is Tracy had finished that box, she wasted little time in following Alex up out of the basement and up to the shop above, only stopping briefly to smooth out her crumpled clothes and make sure she looked presentable.
When Tracy emerged blinking into the light of the store it took her a moment to work out what had happened, when she did she was to ready to intervene and replace Alex at the till remembering just how worried he had been earlier, but Alex's demeanour stopped her short.
Tracy watched from the corner where the basement stair case was located, out of sight of the customer and Alex both, as he proceeded to chat amicably with the woman and confidently ring up the sale. While nothing was wrong with the conversation it did spark further questions that Tracy really wanted to ask Alex. When the customer left, temporarily leaving the shop empty for the moment save Alex and Tracy, Tracy raced forwards to converse with Alex. Tracy had not even had time to say a word when her mother came bursting back into her shop, clearly worked that the two teens had been unable to cope in her absence.
Alexis no nonsense demeanour and calm reassurances soon placated Lilly leaving Tracy to wonder at his calm, soothing, even motherly tone and actions. Boys didn't have those traits at least Tracy didn't think so, it seemed incongruent with Tracy's knowledge that Alex, hard as it was to believe at times, was in fact male. Alex to the best of his ability gave Lilly a rundown of what he had done, how much money he had taken and what he had sold. The last proving the most difficult. Although he was only able to do so after he had spent a few minutes calmed her down sufficiently.
After this unexpectedly emotional debriefing, with Lilly back in control of the, till and the shop front, Alex and Trace were able to go out into the town to get something for lunch. The pair quickly decided on a sandwich shop not far from the store. With their sandwiches in hand agreement was swift to take them down to the basement so as to be able to enjoy the sandwiches in the peace and comfort that the basement afforded and out of the seasonably cold bitter December weather.
Back at the basement Alex brewed more tea for them while Tracy pulled two bean bag seats out of a corner, bean bags that Alex had not been observant enough to realise where even there. When Alex commented about not having seen them, Tracy nodded eagerly.
“These bean bags are as close as I have been able to get to convincing mum to allow actual seats in here. You would not believe the amount of persuading I have tried to do, but she won't budge.”
As the pair tucked into their companionable lunch of sandwich washed down with mouthfuls of hot tea. Tracy finally found the courage to ask about something that had troubled her since she had watched Alex serving customers at the cash register.
"At least one of the customers thought you were a girl, they called you Miss. Do you mind if I ask about that?”
Alex nodded. "Yeah, I thought you might have noticed that, I didn't realise that it had happened until after the customers had left to be honest. It happens quite often, so often that I guess I have gotten used to people mistaking me for a girl. Since mum has stories of people being mistaken when seeing me as such from before I can remember, it's definitely not a new thing. I guess I haven’t made it any easier for anyone since I started growing my hair out. People see the long hair, short height and hear the name Alex and they immediately think that Alex must be short for Alexis, Alexa, Alexandra or something.”
Tracy nodded thoughtfully, it was true. She realised her view of at Alex had always been based on the fact that someone had told her Alex was a boy, if she didn't know then Tracy realised that she too would have struggled to identify Alex as being a boy. The more Tracy looked at Alex the more she realized that androgynous was the most masculine Alex ever looked and more often than not more female than androgynous. Tray realised suddenly that for Alex even looking androgynous was likely to fool people into miss gendering, an androgynous looking person with long hair was more often than not going to be categorised by passers-by as female than male, maybe a tomboy but defiantly as more likely to be female.
“Do you mind it?" Tracy asked after a while.
“Not really I'm so used to it that I don't even really think about it anymore. Mostly people don't mean anything by it anyway. " Came Alex’s response.
"Hey bro, you headed back to that dress shop tomorrow?” Jessica asked innocently the snicker only audible in her voice if Alex chose to hear it.
Looking up from his phone, Alex decided to ignore it and pretend he had not heard the implied levity levelled at his expense.
"Yeah, Tracy and Lilly want me back to help out again there's still a lot of work to do. I can't believe mum stuck me with this though instead of you. "
“Well, that's easy, she probably knew which one of us would be more interested in hanging around a dress shop.” Jessica quipped smugly.
“Hey, that's not fair, I've seen you in a dress at least twice this year.” Alex exasperatedly choked out in defence. His sister's raised eyebrow was her only real response.
While it was true that Jessica did occasionally wear dresses, her accusation although made in jest did have some merit behind it. Alex had never been a particularly boyish kind of boy, while his sister had always more easily fitted that stereotype having always been somewhat of a tomboy, now in her late teens growing towards adulthood that had seemingly not changed much. Usually, she could be found when not otherwise occupied, in a set of loose-fitting jogging bottoms and a white muscle top worn over a white sports bra. The muscle top showed off the well-defined muscles of her arms and shoulders, a testament to how long Jessica spent working out in the home gym she had created. The gym had been created several years ago, by partitioning the double large double garage in half. It was just such an outfit that Jessica wore now perched on the arm of the sofa annoying he brother. Alex was not in fact helping his own case. He too wore jogging bottoms but they were only really that in name only, the material was much lighter than most and fit snugly over his legs more like leggings than jogging bottoms. That, however, was not what had caught his sister’s attention, which was directed solely at the oversized t-shirt he was currently wearing, the hem of which hung down to mid-thigh level.
"Ha ha, sis, very funny, what's next, suggestions that I could accessories with a high waist belt or something.”
"Nah, nothing so cruel, I was just going to ask you if your boyfriend wanted his shirt back and if he knew you had stolen it.” Jessica smirked, taunting Alex was always far to easy and saw it as her duty as the elder sibling. She knew perfectly well that Alex had deliberately bought several of his T-shirts far too big because he loved the effect for just hanging around the house but it made a particularly tempting target especially when considering dresses.
"Funny, I was going to ask you the same question.”
“Ha jokes on you, I haven't dated guys in years, and Katie really loved it when I wore this. " Jessica nonchalantly returned.
Alex blushed crimson at the memory, only a month ago he had made the mistake of trying to find his sister when she had invited Katie over, he had scrambled away before he had actually seen them, but Katie's, carnal screams had left him extremely embraced and in no doubt as to what they had been doing. Jessica, who preferred to be called Jess by most people, made no sex secret of her sexual encounters or her relationships such as they were, had known of this and found it immensely funny how embraced Alex got about it.
“Well, bro, I’m going to go and do some weights, want to join, you never know Tracy might prefer a more muscled version of you.” Tracy was something else that she liked to taunt Alex about, several months ago she had discovered his crush on the girl and what is more, Jess was virtually certain that Tracy felt the same way but neither had moved to do anything about it.
Alex shook his head. “No thanks. Though I hope she doesn't, I'd hate to lose her to my big sis. Wouldn't that violate some kind of brotherly code or something?"
Despite the hushed tone of the last part of his sentence, Alex's words were caught by Jess and her clear light laughter could be heard long after she had left the room.
As good as the tea had been the last time Alex had worked with Tracy at her mother’s store he stopped by a McDonald’s on his way to the shop and purchased a chocolate milkshake for himself and a strawberry one for Tracy, her favourite flavour. Despite it being totally the wrong time of year for anything as cold as the milkshakes, Alex felt that it could never be the wrong season for milkshakes and he felt certain that Tracy would agree with him.
The pair drank the cold but extremely tasty milkshakes as they discussed what they were doing for the next several hours, taking sips of the nearly frozen liquid between sentences so as not to end up with brain freeze.
“Mum thinks we have done a lot so far, she told me if we continue at that kind of pace this morning, we can do something far more exciting this afternoon. " Tracy paused in her exuberant excitement to consider Alex for a moment.
"Well, something I think is more exciting anyway. Mum has agreed to a few model shots and stuff."
Alex nodded, obviously not as enthused as Tracy was.
“Come on, it will be fun you will see. You can take most of the pics and I can do most of the hard modelling work. Lighten up will you.” With that last sentence, Tracy punched Alex in the arm in a jovial way.
Fate might have been so different but for that one act. Alex had only just retrieved his half-drunk milkshake the contents having just warmed up enough to be liquid enough to easily be sucked out through the straw. Unfortunately, for Alex, he had not bothered to make sure the lid was properly attached. One minute at Alex was holding the Milkshake the next, jostled by Tracy, he was wearing the half-drunk milkshake.
Tracy immediately raced to find some tissue to mop up the sticky cold mess, apologising profusely as she did so but no matter what she did, the damage was done. Alex stood shivering slightly, the cold sticky milk having already seeped through both his light blue fleece and his t-shirt underneath it.
“Well, there’s nothing for it, you will just have to start modelling early is all." Tracy said finally with a smirk.
“What?" Alex questioned through chattering teeth.
"You’re standing in a clothing shop, and yes lots of what my mum sells is not cheap, but some clothing lines are quite moderately priced, and I'm sure mum will give me a discount. Don't look at me like that, you can't stay like that, you can’t go on wearing those clothes now, and you can't go anywhere to get others, not like that anyway. "
Alex, who had been glaring profusely at her, slowly let the sense of what Tracy was saying wash over him and he was reluctantly forced to agree.
"OK, I guess, but just nothing too... " Alex trailed off.
"Fine, I will see what I can find. Why don't you take off those wet clothes, while I go up and talk to mum and hopefully find something for you to wear.” Tracy enthused already bouncing off to do just that. While Tracy was gone Alex removed the sticky garments until he stood in just his boxer shorts. While his fleece hoody and t-shirt had brown the brent of the sticky cold liquid his jeans had not been so lucky as to escape the dairy deluge altogether. In the remaining time before Tracy returned Alex used the sink and some tissue to sponge as much of the sticky residue from his skin as possible.
Alex felt quite vulnerable standing there in only his boxer shorts waiting for Tracy to return. A vulnerability that was not helped by the look in Tracy's eyes when she caught sight of Alex. She was holding a bundle of clothes that looked ominously pink, the bundle of clothes was haphazardly dumped on the one of the two bean bags as Tracy stalked towards Alex like a lioness stalking her prey. Alex stood nervously, unsure what to do or what he should think and feel as Tracy closed the gap between them.
Her hands met the exposed flesh of his torso, stroking upwards to roam over his chest. Alex breath hitched at her wondering hands and the powerful, possessive, controlling, lust-filled look that met his own adoring and admittedly lust-filled gaze. Tracy could feel herself getting drunk on the power she clearly had over Alex. She could feel his body shiver with pleasure and excitement at her touch. The adoration and pleasure she could see in Alex's eyes that bore straight back at her own, enticed and egged her on. At last, unwilling to go further Tracy ran her hands down from his shoulders to the centre of his chest eliciting enticing little gasps that sorely tested Tracy's resolve. Finally, Tracy removed her hands from Alex's chest all together and took a half step back, taking a moment or two to regain control of her lust and other emotions.
Tracy let out a breath and spoke, her voice suddenly raw and gravelly full of emotion.
“Go and put on some of those clothes I brought on." Tracy's voice so commanding and far harsher than she had intended it to be, struck a note inside Alex and without a thought he instantly found himself moving to obey.
Alex examined each item before he put them on and was quite relieved to discover that Tracy had been for the most part kind in her selections. While the top was indeed a girl’s top, it was a light blue and there was only a small discernible difference from a guy’s top. Alex was slightly perturbed to discover that the girl's top fitted him better around the arms and shoulders than the guy’s t-shirts he was used to wearing it left him wondering if maybe his sister hadn't been right after all about those weights. Tracy had found a replacement for Alex's fleece, while it was bright pink and very girly the fleece did, have a zip at the front which was a design that Alex favoured. The pink hoody was in this way a slight upgrade over the light blue one Alex had worn to the shop that morning but and when Alex felt the material, he was forced to raise it even further in his estimation, his light blue one was the warmest fluffiest fleece Alex possessed and he loved the soft fluff but from the feel of the material, this pink one had it beat.
The leggings were similar to his jogging bottoms at home and Alex took a moment to admire how the material hugged his legs and bum, a trait that he was not alone in admiring as Tracy looked on eagerly.
“Sorry I couldn't get you any jeans, women’s jeans tend to hug our hips and bums more than men’s, to wear most of the designs mum sells you would need panties and that’s one thing mum doesn't sell. I think you can just about get away with the boxers under those leggings though." Tracy hurriedly explained.
When the full effect was complete, Tracy stepped back from Alex to admire the transformation and gasped. Alex immediately started to become self-conscious over his appearance and the clothing Tracy had dressed him up in, an anxiety that was only partially assuaged by Tracy’s calm reassurances. She had sat back down next to Alex her hand pressed soothingly to his back running reassuring circles over it until Alex had his emotions under better control. When Alex was more in control of himself Tracy gave him tissues which he used to dab away the tears that had tricked down his cheeks during the few minute’s ordeal.
“You look fine Alex, really you do. It's just, well, it's just I didn't expect to look so natural, so feminine. It came as a surprise but you don't look like a freak as you claim. You look great, hot even. "
Alex snorted at this and tried to look annoyed, after all, what guy wanted to hear that they look like a cute girl, even if they are wearing women’s clothes but a part of him, a large part was really very pleased. Part of Alex felt that this was the most right thing he had ever done and Alex was not sure how to react or deal with that part of himself now he was suddenly confronted by it.
Alex was quite perturbed by Tracy's refusal to allow him to see how he looked. She had taken his phone before this had begun and the basement didn't have any mirrors. Alex briefly considered going up to use the one in the store but immediately rejected the idea, he had no wish to make himself into a public laughing stock if everything did look as disastrously drag as Alex believed it did despite Tracy's reassurances. Instead, Alex resorted to an annoyed pout, a pout that Tracy found incredibly cute, laughable and just as irresistible.
“Fine, I will let you look but you need to allow me to brighten you up a bit first."
Alex considered for a moment his face brightening. “Ok, but no makeup."
"Yeah," Tracy nodded eagerly. “You don't need it, and this is already a lot for you. Maybe some other time.” She added wistfully.
Tracy instead set to work on Alex's hair, first brushing it out of the usual ponytail Alex had put it in that morning, trying to make his flowing locks appear as plain and boyish as possible before she arrayed it in a high ponytail that bobbed around at the top of his head. As a last finishing touch, Tracy added a red satin ribbon tied into a bow. Alex sat patiently back as Tracy worked, the feeling of someone brushing his hair and strongly calming, reminding him of when his mum used to brush his hair when he was little. Alex would admit to being slightly perturbed when Tracy produced the ribbon to tie into his hair but he remained mostly calm and did not freak out like he had earlier. The sensation of the high ponytail was unusual and felt different but not in a way that upset Alex, on the contrary thinking about the feeling caused a warm wave to course through him. It was a feeling brought on by the same place in him that was positively giddy about the whole transformation a part that was rapidly winning against the more boyish elements of his psyche.
Pulling out her own phone Tracy unlocked it and set it to the camera function. She then directed Alex to stand and pose for her while she took pictures from several different angles. Finally, Tracy sat back down next to Alex sharing the bigger of the two bean bags, cautiously she handed over her phone set now to the gallery displaying the pictures she had just taken, and Alex eagerly accepted it.
Flicking through the pictures Alex let out an audible gasp the girl staring flirtatiously back at him from the phone screen looked undeniably beautiful, happy and full of life.
“I look like a girl. "Alex breathed softly almost under his breath.
Tracy’s arm shot out at his half-uttered words and pulled him tight to her.
“You make a really beautiful girl, Alex you're a very hot girl."
Alex blushed, the words Tracy had uttered speaking to his soul and once again Alex felt the same familiar hot tingle as the girlish part of him silently begged him to accept this.
"It feels really odd calling you Alex now. I mean it can be a girl’s name as well as a boy’s but, well you don't really look like an Alex like that." Tracy babbled in coherently at his side.
Alex felt the same tingly heat and a certain rightness in all of this, a name sprang to mind.
“Alice." It was quite little more than a whisper, at first Alex did not even realise he had said it out loud until he looked over at Tracy.
More confidently now he spoke again. "For today at least I am Alice." Alice immediately tasted the rightness of her own words and leaned into Tracy's embrace her head resting on Tracy's shoulder and a smile playing peacefully upon her face. Tracy smiled back acceptance in her eyes as she fully accepted Alice and how full of surprises Alex could be.
“Well then Alice, come on girl we have a lot to do this morning." With that Tracy disentangled herself from Alice and strode off confidently towards the other side of the long room.
Obediently, her heart and cheeks warm and glad for two very separate reasons, Alice followed like an obedient puppy.
Alice had to admit that, that day was one of the best she had ever experienced. While the morning was spent cataloguing as before, the afternoon was spent in joyous revere with Tracy. They were supposed to be modelling clothes or at least Tracy was but as they both joyously declared to one another, there was no reason that they could not have some fun while doing it. In fact, the pair had rather a lot of fun teasing, and laughing and talking as much and as loudly as they dared. By the end of it, Alice had taken several very good photo shots of Tracy in four different artists that Tracy had told her could be used later when Tracy was back home and could be added to the shop's website and social media pages.
Tracy kept Alice's boundaries in mind through most of the day, she did not want to scare Alice away, it was strange, Alice was just so natural it almost made Tracy forget that she was really Alex. That line of thought made Tracy question a lot of things about Alex, if Alice was so natural was she meant to be there instead of Alex? Tracy assumed her friend would tell her the answer when and if he knew, but Tracy did have to question even that because Alice seemed to be something Alex had been struggling with for a long time and he had never even vaguely confided in Tracy. Tracy tried not to feel too hurt by that decision.
While Tracy had tried to be mindful of Alice's boundaries, she had been forced to push them twice. Once out of necessity and once for Alice's own good. It had been necessary for Lilly to meet Alice, something that had gone surprisingly well. While Alice had been very frightened of Tracy's mother's reaction, she need not have been, all Lilly gave her was compliments, there was no judgement there. Lilly was just incredibly supportive and completely understanding of the young girl's, younger even than your tender years, anxiety over being seen in public.
Yet despite Tracy's knowledge of Alice's anxiety over being seen in public, Tracy still forced her out, so that together they could get something for lunch. Alice was self-conscious the whole time, despite most of her outfit being covered by her coat, looking all about her suspiciously as is every person she met, and even the inanimate objects might soon discover her and do her some harm. Tracy did her best to distract her friend and by the time the pair came back to the basement to eat, Alice was no longer so wry or afraid. Tracy though did mark the change in attitude between Alex and Alice. Alex was usually very closed off and times distant, there were times that Tracy had found she had to call his attention back to either herself or the task he was doing. Getting Alex to talk was also sometimes difficult and while most of the time he gave normal answers, at times he would seem even more closed off and liable to give monosyllabic answers. Alice in contrast was bubbly and talkative her attention never wondering she also seemed somewhat happier, and freer than Alex ever had. Tracy wondered at such a marked difference between them, it troubled her even as she was glad of Alice's more upbeat nature and freer tongue.
As the pair were finishing up for the day, Tracy finally shared with Alice some great news that she had been intending to tell her all day.
“Mum's book idea is going really well. The other day I told you that she had contacted one of the authors and that, that author lives locally. Well, the author has been in contact and she is going to come to the shop at the close of business in two days’ time to sign some of the books and meet with mum. Mum asked me this afternoon to ask you if you would come back that day to help us prepare."
Alice nodded vigorously, her high ponytail bobbing comically. “That's amazing, of course, I will come and help." She giggled.
“I was told to tell you that it doesn't matter who comes Alice or Alex, mum doesn't mind. She told me to tell you that there is no pressure or expectation either way. " Tracy broke into the giggle fest, regretting it instantly as the giggling immediately fell silent. Alice wasn't sure how to react to that, emotion overwhelmed her at the acceptance, she merely nodded, her eyes to the floor and a tear of gratitude trickling down her cheek.
Tracy immediately stepped forward to close the gap between them and threw a supportive arm over Alice's shoulder. The other hand sought and found in her pocket a small pack of tissues, one of which she used to dab away Alice’s tears.
They stood like that for some time before they were interrupted by a loud electronic beeping. Alice disentangled herself from Tracy's comforting embrace, which she had been quite enjoying, realising that the beeping which had since ceased had been her phone.
Alice's face fell when she looked at the text message, she had just received and Tracy came bounding up to her because Alice once again looked to be on the brink of tears.
"Apparently, it's going to be really cold tonight, possibly snow. Mum fears that it is already getting icy so she has sent Jess to fetch me in the car." Alice told Tracy when queried about what was wrong.
"So,” Tracy began, drawing out the last letter as she did so. "I don't see what the problem is.”
“She is coming in ten minutes and I am like this.” Alice gestured to herself her confidence having clearly evaporated at the thought of her sister's impending arrival.
“Yes, and you look very hot. I'm sure if she wasn't your sister she would not be able to resist you." Tracy joked lightly.
Alice didn't find it half as amusing as Tracy did. “First off ew, no, just no. And again ew gross. Second, she will judge me."
Tracy snorted at that last sentence and could not contain her mirth and laughter at the notion. "Really, you think Jess, your sister, who is one of the most prominent members of the LGBTQ community in our small town, will judge you, for this? Jess who is every lesbian or bi-girl’s wet dream, " Here Tracy sighed dramatically. "Is not going to judge you for this even if you weren't her little sister. " Alice felt a surge of joy despite herself at being called Jess’s little sister and could not help either the snorting or the giggling that ensued along with Tracy now her fears and tears forgotten.
"You seem to have given my sister some serious thought." Alice pointed out through her giggling.
“Oh please, what girl in this town hasn't fantasised about Jess.” Tracy dismissed pulling a still giggling Alice close to her.
"Hi, bro? Sis?" Jess's tone was light and teasing but from the slight questioning edge to her tone of voice Alex knew at least on that point she was not teasing or making light of anything.
"Bro is fine, I'm still Alex. " Alex told his sister seriously from where he was curled up on the sofa.
The words for now went unsaid between them. Jess nodded firmly, choosing not to comment on Alex's outfit choice or that he was folded up on the sofa in a way she had only ever seen her mother and her girlfriends do. Clearly, Alice was making herself known even now and from the moment she had been introduced to Alice by Tracy Jes had been completely unsure Of Alex's protestations that Alice was a one-time thing and that she would only exist for that one day. Jess planned to be supportive either way, but, well she just could not imagine that the bright young girl with eyes that sparked clear and bright with all her joy and enthusiasm was just going to fold herself away into her slightly dull and quirky little brother.
Jess's eyes had not deceived her, Alex's outfit was similar to the one he always wore for comfort and yet somehow was even more girly than the one Jess had so often, unknowingly teased him about. He wore his customary far too large blue t-shirt but in place of his tight jogging bottoms, he wore the girly leggings Tracy had given him, distinct by the little pink logo on the mid-thigh of the left leg. Jess was slightly surprised though at how like his joggers these girl's leggings were. The bright pink huddy was unzipped and about his shoulders, the sleeves just slightly too long for his had arms. Alex's hair glistening and soft, newly brushed, the brush abandoned on the arm of the sofa, rested on his shoulder loose and free.
Truly Jess could have been forgiven for believing that Alice was present not Alex, the person curled on the sofa looked far more girl than boy. Indeed, Jess could see very little that indicated the boy Alex was there at all.
"Mum told me that you want me to drop you off at Lilly's Shop in a bit." Jess said after a pause.
"Yeah, as long as you're free to do that, still got a while yet though, maybe an hour. Tracy texted me telling me that Lilly wants me to come later and stay later than the last couple of times. She also asked me to ask you if you could stay for a few minutes. " Alex told her in a rush snuggling still further if it were at all possible into the soft pink fluff of his fleece.
Jess thought for a few seconds, her head cocked at an angle before she pulled out her phone and began texting. After a few more minutes she lifted her head from her phone screen and regarded Alex.
"Yeah, that should be fine. What does Lilly need me for?"
"Lifting some tables and things, I don't know exactly. Tracy did say that she didn't think it would take you long."
"That should be fine, Cat says she will meet me at the shop."
"Cat? " Alex queried "Yeah, she is actually Catherine but she prefers Cat apparently." Jess explained. Alex nodded slowly taking everything in, realisation dawning.
"New girlfriend?"
"Yeah, met her a couple of weeks ago. So, no more sneaking after me unannounced, not unless you like to watch. " Jess replied an evil smirk playing over her face.
"You weren't even in your room, sis, can't you at least keep it there," Alex whined, going very red. "Second ew gross, I don't want to see that, like, you're my sister, like it's bad enough hearing that."
Jessica cackled evilly as she walked out of the room.
Alex and Tracy busied themselves moving smaller things around the basement while Jessica manoeuvred a small table and a couple of chairs down into the basement. Jessica made light work of the task but could see why Lilly had requested her presents Alex and Tracy would have had difficulty even working together. The real task though was one Jess had not been prepared for, a robust-looking standalone set of metal shelves that needed assembling and putting next to the shop window. This was the real reason she had been asked to help, Jess realised. The weight of the shelves even disassembled would probably have been too much for Tracy and Alex and Jess knew that she did not and would not trust her little brother to assemble something like this. The only two times that Jess had tried to do something like this with Alex, he had so gotten distracted and had lost the screws. Sighing Jess decided that taking each bit over to the window area and assembling it there would be more effective than assembling it and then moving the completed unit over to the window.
Jess had nearly completed the shelves when the loud argument interrupted her thoughts.
"Mum you simply can't put that in the windows think of poor Mrs Wilson, she will have a fit if she sees that. She complained about that skimpy summer dress being in the window only a few months ago and this is like a hundred times worse."
Lilly too laughed at her daughters' screeched cries of worry. "Mrs Willson rarely buys anything from me and complains about many things. On the rare occasion she has come in here to buy, all the things she has complained about have not stopped her from making that purchase."
"Mum, are you sure about this, I don't think it will just be Mrs Wilson who has a problem with this."
"It's fine, dear, you are overreacting."
Jess was just finishing as Cat walked into the shop, the argument still going on in the background. Cat was a year older than Jess and a few liches shorter with long curly dark hair that hung in ringlets down her back. Her eyes were a fierce blue colour that seemed to sparkle with depth. She wore a casual but feminine outfit, which consisted of ankle boots, jeans and a roll kneck jump wollen jumper. Most of Cat's outfit was lost on Jess who who immediately stood up to greet her and fold the shorter girl into a tight embrace.
Jess felt Cat melt into the embrace, taking immense pleasure from the warmth, physical contact, and attention. Although she had only known the woman a short time, Jess found, that she couldn't help having feelings for the other girl. It was impossibly cute and did things to Jess's heart when Cat laid her head on Jess's shoulder and nuzzled Jess's neck like that. Jess was surprised at herself; it had been a long time since she had felt this much for one of the girls or guys she had dated. Jess wasn't usually an emotional kind of touchy-feel girl but Cat was making her seriously reconsider that side of herself.
Cat's outfit was not as lost on Jess's sibling as it had been on Jess herself. Alex particularly liked Cat's jeans finding the embroidered flower pattern near the pockets to be particularly cute. The jumper was nice too although Alex could not understand why Cat kept playing with the rolled kneck as she and Jess made their way over. Alex turned his attention away from Cat and back to Tracy, Lilly and the book that was in Tracy's hand.
"Tracy might have a point," Alex added weekly looking over at Lilly. "Mightent it be a bit racy for the shop window."
"Nonsense, dear, it's fine it's not as if I'm putting porn in the window or something. You too are such prudes, that's all. When I was your age..." Lilly laughed dismissing Alex's concern as easily as she had her daughter's.
"Mum!" Tracy exasperated but Lilly had already left both of them and their concern behind as she headed down to the basement.
Jess introduced Cat to both Alex and Tracy before realising that Cat was staring transfixed at the book in Tracy's hand. Jess looked over the cover that had caused Alex and Tracy so much concern. The cover consisted of the silhouette of a naked woman lying on her front, her hands tied together and to the bedpost with thick red string, a collar was clearly visible about the woman's neck and a whip motif of four different types of whips formed a border around the edges of the cover.
"She is right, you two really are prudes." Jess told Alex and Tracy with a shake of her head.
Jess's hand which she had rested on the Cat's back travelled, upwards, seeking until it rested on the back of Cat's neck. There it seemed to grab something providing a soft but constant pressure that seemed to jerk Cat's head up. Cat's eyes were comically wide as Alex stared at her transfixed, unsure what was happening or what his sister had done. Jess moved her lips close to Cat's ear and whispered something to her. Jess's words, although barely audible to Alex, who stood next to them, were not as quiet as Jess had intended them to be and left Alex blushing almost as much as Cat now was. While Alex was not sure what else she had said, he was sure his sister had ended it with "later my pet." Tracy meanwhile had not been paying attention to the anties Is the others and was still blushing at being called a prude by Jess and what that suggested about Jess's own experience, her head was now full of those implications and her own fantasies. Grinning Jess left the three blushing silently each for their own separate reason, to go and talk briefly with Lilly.
Cat pulled Alex to the side away from Tracy, she had noticed his eyes travelling towards her neck several times and was also sure he had heard something of what Jess had said. Alex for his part used this opportunity to compliment Cat on her jeans. Cat smiled and thanked Alex before pulling the neck of her jumper down just enough to show a thick band of brown leather beneath.
"It's my collar. " She whispered to Alex who reached a hand out to touch it.
The leather felt supple yet tough and resistant beneath his fingers. Cat could not resist the light shiver then, virtually no one other than her girlfriends had ever seen her collar let alone touched it. Cat could not help but consider how bad this was of her; it was such an erotic feeling for her when someone touched her collar. Just wearing it in public was wonderful, showing it to others was an even greater thrill, but this was so much more and worse. She was showing it to her girlfriend's sibling and he was touching her collar.
"Someday you might be lucky and someone will put one on you." Cat told Alex casually.
"How do you know I would want one," Alex answered guardedly not trusting the feelings seeing her's had unleashed inside him.
"It takes one to know one." Cat teased with a wink, stepping back to regard him slightly.
"Yep, definitely, pet material." She teased again, Alex blushing and looking kind of sheepish.
Only minutes after his sister left with Cat, Alex made up his mind, he had been playing with the idea for most of the last two days. Being Alice had unleashed many weird feelings and desires that Alex had not known he had before that day. Weird feelings that Alex was only beginning to understand and to deal with the impacts of.
As soon as his sister had left Alex walked over to Tracy and expressed his wish, his need. Tracy for her part listened sympatheticly, what he said did not surprise her in the least, she had guessed that Alice would not be so easily squashed. She was slightly shocked though at Alex's, bold pursuit of his feminine alter ego, Tracy had very much thought that it would be several more weeks before Alex or Alice were so bold. Tracy had thought she would have several more long weeks of cajoling ahead of her but Alex and just swept that all away.
"Well, Alice, you have picked an interesting day to want to be that adventurous," Tracy drawled with a mischievous grin. "We will both be mostly up here today, helping mum with customers and displays. Come on, mum will definitely give you a discount, but we don't have long to get you all pretty. Good job you're so cute already, saves time." With that Tracy bustled off leaving a confused, excited and marginally apprehensive Alice to follow along behind.
Alice wanted the whole experience this time, and while Tracy tried to be as patient and explain as much as was possible. Time constraints were pressing and Tracy's explainations did begin to become something of a whistle-stop tour of all things womanhood. Alice tried to take in as much of the information being spouted at her as she could but knew that she would never retain half of what Tracy was telling her.
Winter and the cold weather did severely limit Alice's ability to be adventurous with clothing choices, but she stubbornly insisted on a cute pink top, she had seen while cataloguing old stock several days ago, which showed off her midriff. Alice paired that with a slightly more sensible pair of jeans. The jeans were similar to Cat's pair that Alice had jealously admired that morning and Alice was very pleased with the cute embroidered pockets. Even if she did think that the cute flower and butterfly motif on hers were nowhere near as cutie as the roses on Cat's. If she had been braver this morning, Alice realised, she would have asked Cat where she had got them from. Alice sighed wistfully resolving to be a more brave girl if she saw the Cat again.
Tracy had looked dubiously at Alice's choices, not sure how well either would fit or look on Alice but not wanting to discourage Alice, Tracy kept quiet and tried to hide her thoughts from her face. When Tracy went down to the basement to help Alice dress, she was significantly shocked and taken aback Alice stood before her in only a white bra and pantie set. The look of Alice's pale skin creamy skin and the white bra was almost too much to bare for Tracy who could feel her lust rising like a tangible cloud of heat from her core to her head. Tracy with some regret pushed those thoughts aside, promising herself that there would be time for that some other day, for now, other thoughts had to take precedence.
"Aren't you the smart girl with her snazzy new bra and pantie set."
Alice blushed slightly. "Thanks, I went shopping for them yesterday, it's a cute set, isn't it? "
"You went with Jess?" Tracy asked moving Alice's hand away so as to get a better view of the padded bra.
"No, I wasn't comfortable discussing it with her, so I went on my own. I got a Perrywinkle blue set as well and some really fluffy warm pyjamas. I didn't want to tell anyone in case ..." Alice trailed off.
"In case you didn't have the strength to go through with this today, " Tracy completed for her. "I understand, at some point though we are going to have to have a girl's shopping trip together!" Alice nodded her ascent having just pulled on the top.
Tracy's eyes fell on Alice's crotch and her mouth flew open. Where she had been expecting the tell-tale bulge of Alice's former gender, she saw only a flat mound like she would expect of any other biological female. Indeed, if she had pulled her trousers down, now, Tracy felt sure that she would look almost exactly as Alice now did.
"Oh yeah," Alice smirked, seeing the direction of her friends open mouthed gaze. "I did some research online yesterday and learned some tucking techniques. Don't worry, I haven't removed it. At least not yet."
" OK, Alice, I must say you look very girly like that. In fact, you look a hundred percent girl. But you must promise me that before you do anything drastic you will speak to a councillor. In fact, I think you need to do that regardless, as soon as Christmas is over." Tracy told the other girl managing with some effort to tear her eyes from Alice's crotch.
Alice for her part readily agreed as she put the jeans on. Securing overall this was her pink huddy, which she had worn to the shop that morning, which she now wore open showing off her new top.
While Alice may have been self-conscious about being seen in public she quickly got over her fears. Truth be told Alice had little choice but to get over her fears and very little time to worry about them, all three women, Alice, Tracy and Lilly, spent much of the day rushed off their feet. Alice spent more time behind the til serving customers than she ever had before, but when she wasn't she was sorting clothes racks, offering advice and generally helping out.
Just as they were finishing for the day, a woman came into the store that took Alice's breath away. Alice had been certain before that even if she was a girl she definitely was attracted to girls, but even if she hadn't been before she would have been sure then. Tracy saw Alice's expression and could not hide her smirk nor could she hide from herself the fact that she too was just a little turned on by the undeniably sexy woman.
The woman wore a well-fitting charcoal pantsuit that seemed to emphasis her figure in all the best ways. Complementing the charcoal suit, we were a pair of knee-high black leather boots, that encased her feet, ankles, and legs like a second skin.
"Can you do me...help me...you...I mean can I help you with any? That is to say is there anything you need? " Alice babbled incoherently and endlessly.
Tracy in truth was not fairing much better in the woman's presence. It wasn't just the woman's dazzling looks, it was as much the atmosphere that she exuded. The confidence in her step and undertone of power and dominance everything about her exuded. Tracy had once commented that Jess, Alice's sister was every lesbian's wet dream, she now knew she was incorrect. This woman though Tracy had barely even met her, was in fact that, even the atmosphere she exuded when she walked into a room made Jess seem like a pale comparison.
"Hi, I am Tracy, this here is Alice," At this Tracy dug her elbow into Alice's side, who gave a cute squeak at being so painfully pulled from her reverie over the sexy dreamboat of a woman. "Can we be of assistance or are you just coming into brows, if so, I do have to warn you that we are just about to close for the evening."
A smirk played over the the woman's face as she stalked towards them like a hungry lioness regarding a particularly pleasing young antelope.
"Perhaps you can help me." She told them in a teasing light tone her eyes playing first over Alice, then over Tracy, then back and forth. Finally, her hand reached out brushing a stray lock of Alice's hair back behind her ear while looking Tracy straight in the eye. A shiver of pleasure ran through Tracy at their mutual lust-filled glare. Alice too shivered in pleasure unable to think a single thought as she melted under the woman's heated touch.
It was only when staring back into the woman's eyes that Tracy first noticed how young the woman was. While definitely a lot older than herself and Alex, the woman could scarcely be much into her late twenties. Tracy knew that it was just the woman's atmosphere and her outfit that had led her to the assumption, but Tracy had assumed that this woman was much older than that.
"I'm Tasha McFarland I have an appointment here at this about this time or more accurately for tonight I suppose, I have as Bree an appointment here tonight."
Tracy looked at Tasha questioningly, Alice was still far too far gone to fully appreciate the the words that Tasha had said, except to consider how beautiful Tasha's voice sounded, so rich and sweet, and yet so husky, with a touch the merest possibility, of a harder harsher edge that might under the right circumstances be revealed.
"I write under the pen name Bree, " She told them with a shrug. "Lots of authors use a pen name, and I find it easier this way."
"Hello Bree, I am Lilly the shop owner, and Tracy's mother, we talked on the phone." Lilly introduced herself her arms crossed in a defensive posture she had just come up from the basement where she had been making final preparations and was not at all amused to have come up to find the twenty-four-year-old who she did not fully trust or know having wrapped the two much younger sixteen-year-old girls so tightly in her spell. Alice looked like a love-sick puppy prepared to do whatever Tasha said and her own daughter didn't seem that much better.
"Of course, hello Lilly, it's nice to finally be able to put a face to a voice. And very nice to be asked to do something like this, I have been having difficulty getting my book out there and attracting the audience I know it should have. I also have never done any book signings before." Tasha admitted sounding at once polite, contrite, and at the least a little bit vulnerable.
"Yes well, I hope it's the first of many, and I hope that this can be mutually beneficial, attracting people who would not necessarily visit my shop inside, and people who would not usually buy your books to do just exactly that. Now if you would follow me, I will show you to the basement, where I have everything set up and we can leave Tracy and Alice to close up the shop."
Despite Lilly's words, it was not long before Alice and Tracy were switching places with Lilly to help the author manage the piles of books she had to sign. Despite what it looked like, Tasha was not signing all the books Lilly had bought, only the first fifty but even so that was still a lot of books, both to sign and to manage the piles of signed and unsigned books.
"Why do you use the pen name Bree?" Alice asked, reading the standard inscription Tasha was copying into each book.
"Well, I told you using a pen name made things easier for me, as for why I use the name, Bree, there are a couple of reasons, the main one being that one of my favourite romance authors uses Bree as a pen name. The other is that I have always liked the name and a former lover of nine who encouraged me to write has that name." Tasha answered without pausing in her task.
"How old are both of you." She asked them casually, but the casual interest was only fained to cover the far greater interest and hope she was beginning to form surrounding that question.
"We're sixteen, well that is to say I am and Alice will be in January."
"That's a shame, a real shame." Tasha told them pausing in her work to regard them both.
Then, because she couldn't resist doing it at least once, Tasha let her dominant side out to play.
"Bring me that." She demanded of Alice, her voice now husky, fierce and gravelly.
Alice obeyed as if in a trance, she felt strange as if sinking into a comfortable bed, her mind free and empty of all but one thing Tasha. Tracy saw this and the effect it seemed to have on Alice, she herself felt strangely drawn to the ridiculously attractive woman, whose voice seemed to make her physically weak at the knees.
"Good girl," Tasha's gravelly voice was full of a hunny sweet note. "You really are very submissive; it's been a while since I have found anyone so eager to submit to me. It is almost a sick joke that you are so young and therefore so very unattainable, but for the moment that is no matter. Read the title of my book for me please."
Alice instantly and happily complied with Tasha's instruction.
"The price of her submission." Alice read.
"Yes, sweet one, there is always a price, but I can assure you that it is always worth it and usually the reward is a very enjoyable one. Now bring me two more of those books, not part of the allotted fifty."
Alice did so and after writing in them for longer than she had done for the others Tasha handed one to each of them in turn. "My Christmas present to you both."
Alice, who had returned from that place of revery that Tasha seemed to have to power to send her to at will, a place deep inside herself, still seemed immensely sad despite her gift. "Cheer up, sweet girl, remember, when you read my book, to think of me," Then in a lower sultry, conspiratorial tone. "And remember I always practise what I preach. Always."
Once she was done signing books, Tasha escorted by the two girls left the basement and went up to the store. She was not at all surprised to find that full night, which had been on the cusp of beginning as she had entered the shop, was well and truly set in outside the well-lit shop. Tasha made sure to press a crisp note into Lilly's hand as she passed her, explaining that it was in payment for the two books she had given to Alice and Tracy. When she saw Jess, Tasha immediately stopped to greet her. From the hug and greeting the two gave each other Alice realised that they must know each other something her sister had never mentioned before. When she asked them how they knew each other, her answer was met with a light laugh from Tasha.
"We have known each other for a couple of years now. You could say we move in the same circles." Tasha's response was met with a disgruntled, warning, not entirely happy look from Jess and silence from Alice.
Alice was left to wonder what circles the smart well-dressed business woman, and her sister, almost the opposite, could possibly move in that were in any way near each other.
"Jess, you never told me about your sister. She is a real delight. In a couple of years, you must introduce her to a few of our mutual friends, it would be a pleasure always round, I think. Alice is wonderful and such a great help, very good at obeying instructions. It's strange though, she is very different from you, Jess. Almost the polar opposite!" Tasha remarked with a chuckle which Jess responded to with a slight growl and moving closer to her sister protectively. Alice could not help but feel that she had missed some deeper meaning in Tasha's words.
Tara sat book in hand, though for the moment forgotten, watching out the kitchen window, her two children playing in the yard. It was a bright sunny day in late July and the twins were enjoying the heat of the Michigan sun. Tara's two children were alike in many ways often being mistaken as identical twins. While certainly an easy mistake to make, Tara herself often had difficulty believing how similar they were, almost everyone who knew them for any length of time knew that that just simply couldn’t be the case. Jack as alike to Macy as could be in fact male, definitely not a boyish boy but one none the less and Macy his twin was a girl but for all that they were often indistinguishable, as alike as any two people ever could be.
As thick as thieves and often remarked by others as inseparable the twins did everything together, liked and did the same things. There constant companionship made it even more difficult to tell them apart even for their parents which seemed to cause the twins endless amusement. From the moment they were able to dress themselves the hijinks had started, even to this day they remained still very close to identical both had long flowing gold locks that came down to the small of their backs and was immaculately groomed. For almost as long as they had been causing confusion both had decided they wanted long hair, Tara had spent countless hours teaching them how to care for their hair and getting them both into hair care routines. Consequently, neither twins’ hair was ever greasy or unkept but shone in the sun light and fluffy. For sports which both seemed to enjoy, excelling at most sports because of their athletic build, were equally prone to either put their hair up in a high ponytail or braid it into one long braid with could they be tucked inside a Shirt or rolled up under a cap.
Jack only currently distinguishable from Macy by his light blue t-shirt, Macy was wearing a similar one in light purple, was trying to persuade Macy to play some game or other with him, Tara from this vantage point couldn’t be sure what, Macy seemed disinterested in the idea. Tara chuckled to herself, disagreements between them seldom seemed to occur between them and were usually quickly settled she had no doubt this one would be as well. In a way, while it was probably the wrong reaction for a parent to have Tara was sometimes glad to see minor disagreements like this, with the united front the twins often displayed it was comforting to know they still disagreed like any other siblings. Tara settled back down to reading her book again, unlike her children, she preferred the cool of the indoors to the heat of the outdoors.
*********************
Only three days later, to all three equally sunny, Tara had arranged to go shopping with her friend Bethany. Bethany and Tara had known each other for many years, having met at university quickly becoming best friends consequently, they had thought it no small wonder when, after having children at around the same time, at the age of four their two daughters had become best friends. The two women found themselves shrugging it off and even becoming better friends because of it, they had drifted apart somewhat over the intervening years. Sharing a mutual love of shopping they often found that their get togethers revolved around that love. They often spent countless hours shopping, mostly windows shopping and it gave them lots of time to converse. Since they both had daughters that were about the same age and size, when shopping, they had developed a system whereby if one of them saw something that would look good for either of their children they would direct the others attention towards it.
This time June had directed Tara over to a red sweater positively enthusing that it would look so pretty on Macy and that Tara simply had to get it for her, looking at it Tara had to agree. She considered the cut and the fabric for a moment, light but not insubstantial, the top was not obviously feminine, Tara grabbed two off the rail.
"It's unisex, enough." She said by way of a simple explanation.
June let out a slightly bewildered laugh.
"Do they still dress identical?”
For large swaths of their childhood Jack and Macy had found immense pleasure in trying to trick all the of adults around them, by dressing either identically or as each other.
"Yes, but not as often." Tara replied with a slight giggle.
"Is Phillip…" June began to ask, Phillip was Tara's husband and Jack, Macy's father, but was cut of midsentence by Tara.
“Still blissfully unaware that any such thing carried on after the age of four yes, not that he seems to be home long enough for that to be an issue recently."
June gave her friend a sympathetic hug. She, Tara and to a lesser extent several of their friends had taken great pains in the past to hide the twins dress up from Phillip. Phillip was a manly kind of man who would be unlikely to react well to that kind of thing especially when it came to his son.
"Is he still working out out of at the state then?" June asked not wanting to further upset her friend but undeniably curious.
“Yeah, he was working in Texas inspecting some building project or other, he was supposed to be back by now, in fact, two days ago, but he rang me several days back telling me he had just been offered this massive oversight role in by a major construction company in Canada. Before I could even begin to respond he told me that he had already accepted it. I don't even know when he will be back." Tara responded bitterly.
June expressed her indignation and anger at Tara's husband on her friend’s behalf as well as her righteous frustration at his thoughtless actions while also desperately trying to calm her friend down. Eventually, they moved on to another clothes shop once emotions at had settled down somewhat.
"I don't know how the to twins do it." June almost screeched in dismay as Tara showed her a recent picture of the two of them dressed in identical matching outfits only a week or two before. If their own mother had not told her which was which, June was fairly sure she would not have been able to tell one apart from the other, they even smiled identically.
Tara just giggled with a wry smile twinging her lips, she was used to her children’s antics by now even though it was sometimes difficult even for her to remember that one was her son and the other her daughter, especially when looking a picture like that one where Jack looked for all the world like he was her daughter.
"I think that they may be making the most of it while they can, if Macy grows anymore up top it will soon become impossible not to be able to tell the difference." June giggled readily agreeing with her friend.
"Look at that." June, only just recovered from her giggling fit, was already directing Tara towards the rack of sports tops that had caught her interest. Only slightly cropped the tops were a lightweight wicking material that could either be worn as an outer or under layer. Feeling the material Tara couldn't help but agree with June that they would be perfect for the girls. Both Bethany and Macy intended to do cheerleading next academic year and such tops would be prefect for when they exercised. Both women in agreement they each got their respective daughters multiple such tops. The tops came in four colours blue, light green, red, and pink, so Tara resolved to get two of each colour knowing her daughter she suspected that Macy would love the colour variations.
***************
"Come on Jack, it will be fun, and you have got to admit that, that top is really cute." Macy begged her twin. They were getting ready for a neighbourhood BBQ party; a yearly event had been a staple of the neighbourhood for much of their lives and had a fun party atmosphere. The event that occurred at least once but depending on the year sometimes occurred more than once was always well attended drawing families together to enjoy the festive summer spirit. The tradition had started when Jack and Macy were little children with their parents inviting a few friends and neighbours to their not insubstantial property for a BBQ during the summer. It had only grown from there both in terms of get scope and guest list, almost everyone who lived close by were coming. As the children of the host most of the guests knew Jack and Macy, they were far from the only children in the area though, and since many of the parents at the twin’s school were friends with Tara, most of Jack and Macy's friends would be going, something that was made even more likely as it was the first such BBQ of the year.
It was this extensive guest list that was giving Jack pause, while he was happy to be mistaken for his sister by most people, this would be a lot more people all at once than usual. Not to mention, that Jack, while never appearing even to his friends as much of a boy, had always taken pains to never appear girly in front of them and if he did this, he would most definitely be breaking that rule. There was no mixing that top up as a boy’s top, Macy was right though, Jack reflected the top really was pretty and he told Macy this.
“I know right," She beamed. " Mom got me this one a few weeks ago, I don't think she realised I already had one just like it, anyway it's perfect for this."
"Macy," Jack tried again, almost whining now. "I can't wear it, you defiantly should, you will look great in it, I can’t though, it’s clearly a girl’s shirt." This at least was true, the shirt in question was more of a blouse with little sequence on the arms. I know, that's why it's perfect for this, we both wear boy’s jeans and this top with our hair lose. It will confuse everyone; no-one will know which is which. It will be so fun Jack looked at the top again, indecision evident in his eyes, he really wanted to do this and the shirt was so cute but he couldn’t get over the issue of all his friends seeing him like that. Jack knew they would not understand, and their potential reactions worried him greatly.
"Please Jack, for me. " His sister begged and reluctantly Jack found himself agreeing wondering what he had just agreed to.
“Great, this is perfect, we are going to look totes adorbs!” Macy screeched, grinning wildly she was practically jumping up and down with excitement at Jacks acquiescence.
The party was already in full swing as Jack and Macy made their way down in their identical outfits. Bethany's Dad was substituting for Phillip who not even a full day before the event had finally called to tell his wife that he couldn't possibly get back for something as unimportant as this after only just taking over this latest project. Bethany's Dad therefore was leading the four Man, four grills BBQing effort.
Jack and Macy walked round conversing with several adults, neighbours they occasionally spoke to and other such individuals, all of whom tried to size the two up wondering which of but the two was which. After the fourth such Interaction Macy pulled Jack aside.
“Lighten up, stop beings so self-conscious, you look pretty or handsome or whatever. Just act normally, the top looks good on you own it.” She told him firmly, walking around, taking to people they knew Macy had begun to notice his stiffness and slightly pained expression.
Nodding Jack tried to do exactly that, loosening his shoulders and trying to relax a little.
As Jack was relax his shoulders and posture trying to destress, Bethany came racing up. She had the same athletic build as Macy but was slightly taller with than either Jack or Macy, who were about the same hight, she also had rounder checks and short brown hair.
“Hi Macy, Jack." Her eyes swing between them unsure who to rest on, after a few initial seconds of indecision she settled on a rather comical head swivel double take.
“Hi Bethany." They answered in unison, causing a stifled chuckle.
"Don’t do that, you know it freaks me out, it’s like some horror movie scene. Come on, I have Ellie, Victoria and Leah with me come and sit with us.” Bethany didn't wait for an answer before turning round and walking off, Macy and Jack quickly followed her.
Ellie was a short, quiet girl with a dark blonde hair, she never said much but very much held the friendship group together. Victoria was much less meek, an opinionated red head a lot taller than any of the other girls, she was never afraid to voice her opinion on something, a trait that more often than not got both herself and her friends in trouble. Leah was a blacks haired girl who was also talker than Macy, best friends with Victoria she spent most of her time trying to mediate between the opinionated red head and the rest of the group. All three were good friends of Macy and all three were hoping to do cheerleading next year alongside Macy.
After studying the pair for a few minutes, they begged Jack and Macy to tell them which one of them was which. "Can you not guess." Jack asked with a wink suddenly having fun with this.
"Yeah, your Macy, right." Grace stated with total conviction.
“Ha, no moron it’s the other way around," Leah looked to Bethany who had known Macy longest.
Bethany shrugged non-committal, lacking conviction on either answer.
“Leah's right, " Macy seeing their impasse, put them out of their misery. "Could you serious not tell?"
"You look pretty much identical." Leah admitted, Bethany nodded vigorously.
"It's pretty hard to tell you apart Macy, even when you’re not both trying to make it difficult.” Victoria opined in Macy’s direction before wincing as she realised what she had just said.
“Sorry Jack." Victoria immediately apologised realising that Jack as a boy might find it insulting and emasculating to be continuously mistaken for a girl even when he was not attempting to look like one. Looking over at the twin she now knew to be Jack, her brain rebelling slightly at that knowledge as right now he looked every bit a girl from his body language to his top, and not just any girl but one of if not the prettiest girls Victoria had seen. Was that a slight lip gloss he was wearing Victoria wondered silently.
Jack blushed in the cutest way Victoria had ever seen, as he mumbled something about it being ok.
They all sat down together, and it took seconds before the girls where excitedly chatting together with lots of gesticulating. While the girls were very welcoming to Jack pulling him into their conversation, he could not help but feel like a fraud siting there in a girly top looking to all the world like one of these girls. He was a guy, wasn't he, he shouldn't like this, should he?
Jack got up and made as its to leave the group, they were Macy's friends really, he knew they were only really tolerating his presence for Macy's sake so he figured he would leave them to talk. He had only gotten a handful of paces before Victoria with her much longer legs was in front of him, towering over him and baring his way.
“Just where do you think you’re going, like that?” Victoria asked him a fierce protective note in her voice, she led Jack back to sit with the girls again, this time making sure she positioned herself next to him.
Victoria had never noticed Macy's twin brother before, he had a tendency to blend into the background as did Macy, both were quieter than a lot of other people and therefore were easily overlooked. Now sitting beside them, Victoria had to admit he was sort of hot especially looking all cute in that little outfit. When Jack had moved and just left on his own, fear seized Victoria and her protective instinct had kicked in.
“For today you can't just go off alone." She warned him.
Jack made as if to argue but before he could even form the words to do so he was cut off by Bethany.
"Look Victoria is being a little harsh but she is right, dressed like you are and with your long hair, it looks gorgeous by the way, you look to anyone who doesn’t know you like a girl. That means for the moment, for your safety, you need to take the same precautions the rest of us do."
"Jack, even at family events like this, especially is there are a lot of people none of us go anywhere alone. It invites danger. For today you can't either. Most people know you and probably it would not be an issue around them but others don't know you and there are always a few people at something like this that no-one knows that well. It’s just best not to take any unnecessary chances." Leah broke in as they all looked at Jack earnestly.
Jack felt bewildered and a little set shocked, he usually didn't think about such things. Jack didn't know is he should feel a loss of masculinity being told not to go anywhere alone like this, was he a failure be because of it, should he just reject their advice as being too cautious. It was a little late to go back to the house and change but it did enter Jack's mind, still reeling he turned to Macy for support but found none in her glance as he met her eyes.
“I didn't really think about it before this, but I think the girls are right, if we are so easily mistaken for each other even by people who know us. It could be dangerous for you to go off on your own. Please Jack stay here with me, it’s only for today." Macy begged. Knowing he was beaten by popular opinion Jack reluctantly acquiesced. He still did not see the necessity for him staying with the girls, but he would go along with it for now especially for his twin’s sake.
The afternoon wore on like this and Jack found himself seated in between Macy and Victoria included in all their discussions as its he was one of them, it was not even a little bit awkward. Conversation flowed easily between them all and Jack was surprised to realise he was enjoying this far more than he would have if he had left to find some of the other boys. Jack often found he had very little in common with them and worse often didn't understand their more boisterous behaviours. He almost never felt included like he did now nor the ease of communication.
“Boy alert." Bethany quietly whisper shouted to them.
Sure, enough one of the more confident boys, Jack recognised him as Daniel, was strolling towards their group. Jack suspected he had been elected by the boys as their spokesman. A suspicion that was confirmed as soon as Daniel reached them. With an amiable smile, that seemed to Jack to be at least a little insincere but maybe that was just nerves, he began.
"Would you girls care to join us by the fire.”
This too was tradition, as early evening began some of the older boys would make a small campfire a little ways off from adult supervision and once an adult, usually Jack or Bethany's father, had ensured that it was not especially dangerous, most of the teenagers would congregate around it.
“We would love to especially when invited in such a charming way by such a curious man as yourself." Bethany purred accepted on behalf of the group, Daniel suddenly becoming very red and taking a great interest in both his shoes and the ground next to them. Before Jack could even think or question anything he was being herded along with the rest of the group to join the boys by the fire.
Upon joining then it became immediately apparent that none of the boys recognised Jack and further that all of them thought he was a girl. There was even a hushed debate or at least a debate that was supposed to be hushed between the boys as to who the hot new girl was. Jack was considering tell telling them all the truth, he didn't want to mislead them it felt wrong to do so, when he received a look from Victoria and then from Bethany, that warned him not to. Sighing Jack resolved to keep the truth to himself at least for now. The two groups interspersed and soon several of the girls were sat next to or on the laps of various boys, Jack was surprised to see his own sister siting snuggly rather close to Sebastian and Jack resolved to ask Macy about it later. All thoughts like this were quickly driven from Jack's mind When he found himself siting rather close to Theo. Jack had known Theo for several years and he was shocked Theo hadn't figured out who he was by now, more than ever Jack wanted to tell them all the truth but he didn’t dare to.
As time went on and stories and laughs where shared, Jack began to feel cold finally he let out a small shiver almost unnoticeable but definitely a shiver. Theo must have felt or seen it because just moments later Jack found himself pressed tighter to Theo an arm wrapped about him. Jack's felt butterflies in his stomach and marvelled at the secure feeling of being wrapped up like this before realising that he probably shouldn’t feel this way. A sense of fear at his own feelings gripped Jack and the embrace that had felt so comforting and secure just moments before now felt confining and suffocating. Jack began to hyperventilate in Theo’s arms. Theo must have noticed that too because the tight embrace loosened considerably immediately.
"It's ok Jack, I know your you although you even had me fooled you for a bit. The others don't know though, and I promise I am not going to tell them." Theo's voice was low and barely audible even to Jack so that only Jack would hear his words.
Jack slowly began to relax once his breathing had reached a steady and pace without reservation, he relaxed back into Theo’s body content in the knowledge that Theo knew and did not mind. Jack still was not ready to face his conflicted emotions though, he just pushed those thoughts off for the moment so as to be able to enjoy his evening with Theo.
Across from both Theo and Jack, Victoria, who was one of the only girls to not partnered up with one of the boys, sat watching them jealousy. Her jealousy surprised even herself, Victoria was not usually the sort of person to be this kind of jealous and she had never taken much interest in Jack before but curled against Theo's much broader frame as if he belonged there Victoria could not help but feel incredibly envious of Theo.
Macy stood hovering over her clothes-covered bed presiding over organised chaos like a monarch over her unruly subjects, she was putting forth as much consideration as she could to her potential outfit choices. It was the day after the BBQ and she was considering a blue glittery top her mother had bought her a couple of weeks ago. Even then she had been unable to figure out what it went with now looking at it again she was still at a complete loss. Sighing she set it down on the bed again and pulled out yet more skirts and pants in a vein hope it might work with one of them.
"Hi sis, what are you doing?" Jack asked in a light and breezy lilting tone from the doorway.
"Just trying to find something that goes with this top, mom bought it for me, but I just can't find anything that it fits with." Mary exasperated.
"A date then, maybe with Sebastian, you were awful close to him yesterday." Jack teased joining his sister by the bed.
"I could say the same of you, date with Theo on the cards, you two were pretty snug as well. " Mary challenged in the same teasing manner. Jack was now actively sorting through the pills of clothes on Macy's bed.
"Nah, he knew who I was, I think he was just being friendly you know, looking out for me. I don't think he meant anything by it." Jack told her in an upbeat tone that betrayed the obvious regret he felt, even if he was unwilling to acknowledge it. Macy nodded in acceptance but could not help but feel that Jack might be wrong from where she had been sitting last night the look in Theo's eyes and the way he acted suggested something else entirely.
"What about that skirt or this pair of parts," Jack asked holding up a black knee-length skirt with blue strips down either side and a black chino-style pair of pants with silver that glistened a silvery metallic in the light. Macy gave a squee of delight and hugged her brother tightly.
**************************
At about the same time that the twins were having their heart-to-heart, Victoria was more confused than ever. Her conflicted feelings of the night before had only gotten worse with time not better. She had woken up to the thought that she might be gay after all the only time she had really taken interest in Jack was when he was dressed undeniably as a girl. She ran through girls she knew in her mind, several of them were pretty but she couldn't decide if she was attracted to them or not. Stumped Victoria began running through and listing guys she knew and deciding if she found any of them attractive, again Victoria found herself stumped, she knew several who were handsome but couldn't decide if she was attracted to any of them.
That confusion continued throughout the early part of her day and into the afternoon, it colored her mood and she seemed deep in thought or far away lost in her own head. At last, her mother, having noticed this behavior, resolved to talk to her daughter, asking if she were all alight and if anything was troubling her. Victoria, who had always had a good open relationship with her mom, considered for a few seconds before bravely diving straight into the crocks of the issue.
"I think I might be gay momma Victoria stood waiting for her mom's response.
"OK dear, is there a particular girl you like?" Victoria's mother, a no-nonsense blonde woman in her early 40's questioned.
"You don't mind, momma. " Victoria's voice wavered, not being sure of much at the moment and having dreaded a reply that she had known would not have come but was to be dreaded regardless.
"No of course not, dear, I just want you to be happy, that's all. Now back to more important things, is there any particular girl you're interested in?" Victoria's mother asked again.
Victoria thought about it for a second or two, she wasn't sure how to express this, she certainly was interested in Jack but he wasn't a girl, at least she didn't think so and right now he was the only one Victoria was interested in, you couldn't be a lesbian if you like a boy, could you? So was she bi-sexual then, Victoria wasn't sure.
"I don't think so, momma." Victoria eventually decided on it.
*************************
Later the same afternoon Macy burst into Jack's room running in without announcing herself so overcome with great excitement. Jack was sitting on his bed, feet curled up underneath him playing a video game and though he was initially startled by his sister's sudden entrance he insisted much to her great annoyance on reaching a point that he could pause the game before he would listen to her.
"Victoria has invited us to go to the mall with her tomorrow," Macy announced as soon as her twin would allow her to speak.
"OK, Sis have fun," Jack told her trying to hide his disappointment at not going with them.
"No silly, we are invited, as in you and me, unless you don't want to go."
Jack put down the controller and demurely leaned back, yawning slightly. "Of course, I want to go sis."
Macy looked relieved, it was rare that any of her friendship group invited her out without the others as Victoria had and she hadn't wanted to have to tell Victoria that Jack had refused the offer. Nor did Macy particularly want to go out just her and Victoria the other girl's confidence and outgoing personality had always slightly intimidated the much less outgoing Macy.
"So, what are you going to wear?"
"Probably just jeans and a T-shirt." Jack shrugged nonchalantly. He wanted to appear manly in front of Victoria or at least he assumed he should want to appear masculine in front of Victoria. She was after all very pretty and asking him out if not one-on-one then close to it.
"Ok," Macy considered how to frame her next few words, she didn't want to upset Jack in any way, she knew that he often struggled with what he thought society and others expected of him.
"I thought it would probably be easier if you went as a girl, fewer questions at stores and things when you want to try things on." It was Macy reflected as extremely harmful to society and massively wrong but a girl who wanted to try on a boy's clothes would garner a lot less attention, being more accepted by society than a boy who wanted to try on a girl's clothes.
Jack considered for a second then shook his head.
"Nah, but you should totally wear those navy blue leggings with that cutie pink top, you know one at the back of your middle draw."
Macy recalled the top immediately; Jack was totally right it was really cutie.
"Thanks, I think I will." She responded excitedly.
Jack smiled at his twin's excitement picking up his custom pink and blue Xbox controller, to resume his game.
Victoria got her mother to drop her off at the twin's house so she could ride with the twins whose mother was taking them to the mall. Tara was only too happy to drive all three to the mall and drop them off especially as Victoria's mother had arranged to pick them all up again later that afternoon. One of the first things Victoria noticed upon entering the twin's home was how pretty Jack looked he was dressed as he had told Macy he would be in blue jeans and a red t-shirt, yet he still, Victoria looked more pretty than handsome. While the outsit was entirely men's clothing, with his long hair and effeminate look the effect seemed to have lost most of the masculinity Jack had been anxious to convey.
Eventually, Victoria was able to pull her eyes and attention away from Jack and to greet Macy. Victoria felt that she had overlooked Macy in their friendship group and was hoping to further cultivate that friendship. Victoria was also anxious that her interest in Jack was not known by any of the adults yet, it would be easier that way, she had decided if it just appeared that she thought that Jack and Mary were a package deal and not that Jack very much held her interest quite apart from his sister. Therefore, while she was conversing and cordial with Jack, for the whole time Tara was around Victoria made sure to spend a long more time conversing with Macy than Jack.
As soon as Tara was safely out of sight and the three teens were headed towards several of the large clothes shops, Victoria's attitude immediately changed and more of her attention and the conversation was switched to Jack. Who, without his mother present was much more energetic and conversational. Conversation flowed enthusiastically between all three and Jack, despite forgetting his intention of trying to seem more masculine for Victoria, is a casual observer was listening to their conversation they would have thought that all three were girls, best friends at that, talking excitedly together in the most girlish way possible.
The first store the trio stopped in at soon had the two girls changing running to the changing rooms laden with armfuls of hopeful choices while Jack offered helpful advice to both in turn as to what went with what and what suited them best. Other times Jack would wander around the racks with a wistful look in his eye and a disappointed look on his face. It was at one of these times that a sales assistant saw him looking longingly at one of the pink belly tops. This particular sales assistant had actually noticed Jack some time earlier but now she saw an opportunity and gingerly approached him.
"Hi Jacoline, I don't mean to intrude but that top would look lovely on you, why don't you try it, dearie," Jack startled from his own thoughts, looked at her slightly dazed.
"Jacoline? " He questioned.
The woman blushed, hurriedly explaining in embracement, "I had heard the other two girls calling you Jack or Jackie so I thought that must be your name. If it isn't I apologise."
"No that's fine your right. " Jack told her hurriedly backpedaling, liking the feminine name but still not really sure if it suited him. Agreeing with the store assistant seemed like the better thing for him to do anyway, it seemed a lot easier to him at that moment than trying to explain everything to her.
"In that case why don't you go and try on that top, even tomboys can get girly tops occasionally." She encouraged with a wink.
With that Jack's reluctance was forgotten and he rushed with the top to the changing room to try it on and get Victoria and his sister's opinions. In no time at all some girly jeans with pink bows on the side to match the top joined the aforementioned top in first a basket and later a shopping bag.
The store assistant who had encouraged Jack saw the trio leaving and called out.
"Have a good day Jacoline."
Jack thanked her politely with a large grin as they exited the shop. Mary and Victoria stared at him in confusion. Their confusion and continued pestering necessitated a retelling of the store assistants kindly at words. The retelling carrying them almost to the doors of the next clothes shop they wanted to look around.
"Well you need a better name than that, you're too pretty to suit that name," Victoria teased in a semi-serious way as they entered. "Don't worry, honey, we will help you think of something."
This store went much the same way as the last but Jack was much less afraid of trying clothes on, figuring that since he was so easily mistaken for a girl once then it was highly likely that anyone who did see him would think the same and give the matter no other thought. The conversation that flowed between them admittedly with short interludes as one or another of them dashed off to try something and ask the opinions of the other two, was that of cheerleading next year. Both Macy and Victoria were planning on being in the squad and could not hide their excitement to begin learning the various routines and cheers. Despite himself, their conversation soon pulled Jack in, and he did his best to chime in when he could. While cheerleading and gymnastics had never interested Jack as much as they had Macy he had watched many videos and tutorials with Macy over the years and to say he wasn't as interested was not to say he wasn't interested at all. In reality, much of Jack's disinterest originated from the fact that as a boy it was not something he would be able to participate in. He had been active in many gymnastics groups and clubs alongside Macy for a lot of their childhood but had stopped about three years ago seeing no future for himself in it.
"Why don't you start practicing some of the cheer moves in the holiday, that way you know them for when you actually go, I could help you if you want." Jack proposed, having no idea what he was getting himself into.
The girls both thought it was a great idea and Victoria even thought that some of the other girls might want to join them. Both were equally equivocal that they wanted Jack to help them and Jack for his part was more than happy to do just that.
After that store, there was disagreement as to which stores to go to next. There were two more clothing stores, a bookstore, and a video game store they wanted to stop at the other two clothing stores were on the way to the food court with one only a few feet away from the burger place that all three had decided on for lunch. Victoria wanted to go to all four clothes stores before getting food while Macy wanted to go get food now and go to the other four stores afterwards. The disagreement did not take long to be resolved in a compromise; they would go to one more of the clothes stores before lunch and then one afterward.
Straight off the bat when they entered the third store Victoria was notably more playful and teasing than ever. This string of playful comments mostly aimed at making Jack blush and get flustered which Victoria secretly found to be the cutest thing ever, culminated when she saw a revealing two-piece in a light blue color. Taking the bikini from the shelf Victoria practically skipped to the changing room calling out for Jackie to follow her before she entered the changing room.
Jack waited outside the changing room he had not seen what Victoria had picked up so he had no idea what he was about to have to give an opinion on. Victoria opened the door to show him, and Jack's jaw dropped. Seeing Jack's reaction Victoria could not help herself striking a pose with one hand on her hip and the other holding the back of her head deliberately arching her back as much as possible.
"Do you like it? My ass doesn't look too big in it does it?" Victoria asked innocently.
It was at this point that Macy came to investigate what the other two were doing. Taking one look at the display Victoria was putting on she could not help but shake her head in disbelief. Macy was finding it difficult to deal with the atmosphere between her brother and Victoria one minute it was that of two best friends and the rest it was that of two lovers, try as she might Macy could not seem to predict which one each scenario would elicit from them. The whiplash in the changing dynamics and energy was becoming more and more difficult for Macy to comprehend much less react to.
Sighing Macy gently shut her brother's jaw and led him back towards the rest of the store.
"Go and put some clothes on Victoria."
"You're no fun Macy, I still haven't found out what Jackie thought yet, however, will I know if I should buy it or not now," Victoria replied with a chuckle.
"As Jack's sister and your friend, I don't want to know what Jack thought," Macy told her firmly, a note of hard finality in her voice.
At the food court, it was quickly decided that they would all go for a burger and fries. It seemed the easiest option to all three and the agreement came quickly and unanimously, Jack and his sister scurried off to secure them a table leaving Victoria to order.
"Couldn't you have gotten a few more fries and maybe a Coca-Cola or something," Jack whined for the second time in nearly as many minutes gesturing to what he clearly considered to be a diminutive pile of fries and the bottle of spring water he had gotten.
Victoria sighed deeply, not having realised when she had made the choice that it would be so controversial.
"Jackie if you want to look like a girl you are going to have to start eating like one. Most girls are constantly watching their weight and I personally would never eat more than this for lunch while shopping. We really should have had salad with the burgers, but I figured we all could use the extra calories with how much serious shopping we are doing."
"Regardless, one day of marginally healthier eating will not harm you," Macy told Jack simply not wanting to put pressure on Jack over the male or female debate, but she was unwilling to listen to any more whining.
Jack wasn't so sure that he agreed over either of their arguments but wisely decided not to complain anymore and instead just enjoy the food and the jovial conversations that seemed to so easily flow between himself, Victoria, and Macy
The final clothes store they wanted to go to was visible from the table that Jack and Macy had chosen, so it wasn't long after they had all finished that they made their way over to it. The store was considerably different from the other two big-name retailers they had previously visited, being much smaller than either of them and containing only a select number of brands none of which were those you would expect to see in one of the big Highstreet stores. It was well known to everyone that I lived anywhere nearby that the store was owned by a local woman who tried hard to support small or independent clothing brands and give everyone a different choice than they would get from more mainstream stores. Both Macy and Victoria had come there regularly and while they loved to browse the various styles and fabrics, both found the prices to be slightly off-putting, usually being too high for either of them to afford. This trip proved to be no different than the others with only Victoria buying anything at all. Even Victoria only bought a single dress, it was reduced and while still being significantly costly she had been unable to resist the summery dress that was a retro black and white design. Despite the lack of purchases none of them felt the visit had been a waste of time and they had spent a considerable amount of time inside the quite small shop especially considering the limited number of items the store stocked.
Both Jack and Macy were extremely excited to go to the video game store that was only a few minutes' walk away so naturally with a shrug Victoria accompanied them. Victoria herself had no real interest in video games and quickly lost sight of them when they both ran off into the store like two small, exited children, both of them excitedly flittering between several racks of shelves, practically screeching at each other in their eager adulation. The store was not exactly large but bigger than Victoria had anticipated though the loud conversation between Jack and Macy helped her find them easily.
"Nurds." Victoria sighed with a shake of her head at the twin's antics.
She had found them hunched over a shelf in heated conversation over the game's main features and their obvious excitement for such things was entirely foreign to Victoria who could not understand why moving pixels with a controller would possibly appeal that much to anybody. When she pointed this out to them both, she did not get a great reception from them.
Jack pouted and pointed out that Victoria was being mean. His pout and feigned sadness prompted first, Macy and Victoria to wrap Jack in a protective embrace. By the end of their shopping trip, the twins had forced Victoria to accompany them to two other stores that she considered to be incredibly nerdy. One being a comic bookstore and the other being an ordinary bookstore. It nearly being time for them to leave, Victoria's mom was coming to pick them up, so they all decided to return to the food court and get a hot cup of cocoa before they left.
"Hi, Jack."
A male voice suppressed all three as they sat, unannounced Ther sidled up to them taking a seat on the opposite side of Jack from Victoria.
"I didn't expect to see you here. " Theo' explained, aiming the conversation at Jack, though not entirely to the exclusion of the other two, as he rested his arm slightly possessively on the back of Jack's chair. Jack said nothing but did slightly lean closer to Theo, his heart beating slightly faster than it had been a few moments before.
"Victoria invited us," Macy explained noticing the frosty atmosphere between Theo and Victoria who was currently giving Theo such violent death glares that if looks could kill she would have been accused of murder.
"I thought it would be nice for Jack," Victoria responded with barely contained animosity.
"I see, well I was just passing by and saw Jack and thought I would say hello. Maybe me and Jack could leave you two ladies for a bit." Theo flashed a daring grin in Victoria's direction.
Macy was still not sure what to make of this animosity, but it was very clear to her that Victoria was jealous for some reason and also that her brother had in some way become part of the equation.
"I'm afraid we were all just leaving," Victoria replied icily.
"Never mind then perhaps another time." Theo agreed to pull Jack into a less-than-manly embrace, an embrace that Jack readily returned, and that had Victoria's teeth clenched in an effort to contain her emotions. An embrace that Macy realised was more like that of a lover and not a friend.
When Macy and Jack returned with Victoria, Tara was almost certain it was her two daughters who were returning, bags of clothes gripped enthusiastically in exited hands. Jack seemed completely comfortable in his girly disposition despite Victoria's presence and his earlier qualms which had seen him leaving in as emphatically a boy mode as he was capable of. No doubt about it, Jack was returning even more utterly in girl mode than he had left in boy mode. Hands waving in girlish gesticulation voice high in enthusiastic conversation with the other two. Tara was a little surprised considering her son's obvious nervousness surrounding the whole idea and his earlier decision to go as a boy, even so, it took Tara only a couple of seconds to process the change in her son. Tara had long ago learned to accept both versions of her child and was usually unperturbed by the switch between the two which often left even those who were accepting of the change with emotional whiplash, yet she could not even pretend that this time had not caught her of guard. Tara was even more surprised when Jack and Victoria bid each other goodbye, both seemed to become self-conscious and painfully aware of the two mothers looking on. The sudden self-consciousness caused a hasty and slightly awkward embrace but neither had quite been able to hide their regret at not being able to express their emotions more clearly. Their hidden desire was not missed by Tara's motherly gaze. Briefly Tata considered what her husband would make of such an exchange. Her son was not exactly a manly boy but in girl mode like this, he was virtually indistinguishable from any other girl of his age. From the embrace she had just witnessed her son and Victoria looked more like lesbian lovers than a typical boy and girl. As they entered the house the twin's girlish conversation rose to include their mother describing how much fun they had and several of the outfits they had either seen or bought. After a few minutes, they left their mother to her own thoughts eagerly marching off to Macy's room trailing their shopping bags behind them.
At length, Tara composed herself and went up to find her children, in particular Macy. She could not shake the feeling that as a parent she should do something, in relation to her son's newfound interest in Victoria, at the very least she felt she should find out more about this. Going up the stairs Tara found both her children in Macy's room, both sat on Macy's bed, new outfits strewn about them. Tara asked for a word with Macy and the mother-daughter duo went down the stairs again to sit in the living room.
"I am glad you and Jack get no so well and you know I have never discouraged either of you in that way, I never wanted either of you to feel that there were things you couldn't do," Tara began haltingly unsure of how to broach the topic with her daughter. Macy nodded encouragingly still unsure what her mother was meaning to say.
"I guess I am just worried for Jack, I am not sure that it is the best thing for him to be dragged along with you and your friends. I don't want anyone embracing him or making things difficult for him. He shouldn't be a third wheel or anything." Tara told her daughter worry creasing her brow.
Macy laughed brightly. "Of course, not mom but that's not how this is, Victoria invited us both but I think that really it was Jack she wanted to invited. If anyone was a third wheel it was me. Recently Victoria and Jack have been so close, I think they are fast becoming best friends."
Tara took in this new information in wide-eyed surprise. While Jack and Macy had always been close Jack had never really had close friends in the way Macy had. What friends
Jack had, had over the years were those he played sports with, most of these were other boys who Jack had, had little else in common with. While Macy's friends had never actively discouraged Jack from friendship with them as far as Tara knew, Tara was aware that none of them had ever really attempted to befriend Jack. Victoria's supposed budding friendship with Jack was a little surprising but not unwelcome to Tara, Jack needed to find more people who would care for him and support to him, Tara reflected. Shaking herself out of the train of thought, Tara's thoughts returned to the other area of her concern, the obvious attraction between Jack and Victoria. Deciding on subtlety Tara began to question Macy.
Macy for her part took a moment to consider her responses. She and Jack shared many things and enjoyed a relationship that was not shared by most of her friends who had siblings. Her relationship with Jack contained both a sisterly and brotherly aspect to it and Macy took joy in both, Jack was both her overly protective brother and her supportive sister more obsessed than she was with cute clothes and makeup. Macy did not want to endanger that unique relationship; she and Jack told each other things that they would never tell anyone else. She wasn't sure what to tell her mother, what Jack wouldn't mind their mother knowing. Finally, Macy settled on what to say, she decided that she would only tell her mother what she knew for certain about Jack and Victoria, she would not tell her mother anything Jack had let slip to her, nor would she tell her mother anything that she suspected. That included Victoria's jealousy and the attraction that Macy suspected them both of feeling for each other. Tara nodded to her daughter's answers, she suspected that her daughter knew more than she was saying, but decided not to press her any further. Tara could not shack the knowledge of the lust she had seen in both her son's and Victoria's eyes. Maybe he should talk to her son Tara reflected slowly; he had never expressed any romantic interest in anyone before girl or boy, and might need a bit of guidance from his mother.
Usually, Tara would have left that kind of conversation to Phillip especially since Jack was his son and Tara supposed in most family dynamics such situations would best be dealt with by some father son bonding time. Yet Tara knew better than to suggest that with Jack, there were multiple reasons that such a scenario would not ever work for them. The first being that Jack had never had that kind of relationship with his father, even if he had, Jack had always been different than most boys. That led to the second complication Phillip had proved long ago that he would never accept his son's feminine side in any meaningful way, that alone had driven a wedge between Phillip and Jack. The third factor was Phillip himself, not for the first time Tara wondered why she had married him. Always focused on his career, for many years Tara had felt that he cared more for that than he did for anyone else. Tara herself was lucky if she spoke to her husband more than once a week while he was away, which had been more often than not over the last few years, Tara knew that Jack spoke to Phillip even less than that. Tara sighed at the thought, it was bad enough that her husband ignored her but as his wife but it nearly moved her to tears to think the man, she had married would do that to his children.
So due to her husband's failings and Jack's feminine tendencies, Tara had gotten used to having conversations with her son that were usually the sole domain of Mothers and their daughters. At least her son's interest in Victoria answered or at least gave some insight into her son's sexuality Something that Tara had been unsure of for many years. While it mattered little to Tara it was something she had considered over the years, there were times, especially when the twins played together with dolls or talked together as children about weddings, that Tara had been forced to wonder.
The light of morning glittered through windows as Tara hurried towards the front door. An unexpected knock on the door had interrupted her morning cup of coffee, something that Tara was at that moment nursing her annoyance at. In truth, Tara was more than slightly annoyed, although, with every passing moment, she was calming herself or at least getting ready to present an air of reasonable calmness, her morning cup of coffee was the time that Tara used to think and prepare for the day. This Morning Tara felt she had fare too much to think over, she had not really known what to say to Jack yesterday evening and had decided for better or for worse to delay any type of action in regard to the conversation she needed to have with Jack until the next day in order that she might be better able to consider how she might even begin to approach such a conversation. Her mind still hummed in mild confusion over the things she now knew and those she guessed in regard to her son's recent newfound feelings for Victoria. And Tara was still working through the implications and was no closer to knowing how to start a conversation with Jack about it when she was rudely interrupted. Tara had hoped for inspiration while drinking her customary morning cup of coffee but that was now interrupted and her thoughts unproductive though they might have been, had been scattered by that interruption. In some ways, it would have been easier, if Jack had been a girl she reflected as she went to open the door, then as soon as the thought came Tara recoiled at it. She had always tried to be supportive to her children and that kind of outdated stereotyping was not helpful to either them or her. Still in this case there was a grain of truth in the unwelcome thought, when talking to Jack Tara never was never entirely sure which version she would be addressing, the slightly effeminate boy or the obviously girly, girl. There were a number of occasions where that difficulty had made parenting Jack quite challenging, a number of times where Tara had misjudged and her message had been taken poorly by Jack. Tara fervently hoped that however, when she approached the topic of Victoria with Jack later today, she would not be caught out by that at least.
Tara opened the door and was quite surprised to see an apparently very nervous youth standing before her. Stockily built with wide shoulders the boy looked uniquely uncomfortable, hands thrust deep into the pockets of his smart jeans, in a mannerism ubiquitous with perturbed men especially younger ones. The boy who had until that moment been looking down at his shoes finally noticed Tara's presence and looked up staring at her with wide eyes that further told of his current anxious disposition. The boy was Jack and Macy's age obviously more at home in sports pants it was clear with his hair neatly spiked with gel and wearing jeans that the boy had done his best to dress up at least as far as the inflexibility of boys his age would allow. Tara eyed this youth for a few second fixedly the boy becoming more and more anxious under her appraising gaze, the longer that gaze lasted the more agitated the boy appeared to become.
"I suppose you are here to see Macy." Tara surmised when at last it appeared the boy could no longer take the apprehension of the evaluating look she had been giving him. Hands resting on her hips, Tara tried her best to be the very model of a stern and intimidating parent.
The boy looked shocked for a few seconds before recovering his composing with a genial smile that lit up his features, displaying his normally affable personality which had only been hidden by the immensity of his nervous anxiety. A small slight shake of his head, added to that genial display as he dispelled Tara's incorrect assumption.
"No, not really," The boy told her sheepishly trying to be as respectful as possible while being as nervous as he was. "I am Theo, a friend of your son, Jack. I was hoping to see him if he is in."
Despite her surprise and the implications of all of this Tara resolved to think of all that later and wasted little time in inviting Theo inside and at the same time calling upstairs to let her son know he had a visitor. Her son appeared only a few seconds later on the stairs silky, smooth, soft hair tied back in a long high ponytail that bobbed with every step he took, wearing a set of navy-blue leggings that hugged his thighs and calves tightly and his Detroit tiger's baseball polo. Jack smiled brightly as his eyes came to rest on Theo, skipping down the last steps Jack allowed the bigger much more muscled boy to fold him into a tight embrace. Tara, stood forgotten by the other two, watching Jack melt into Theo's arms in a manner that made to Tara at once resentful and jealous. It reminded her of how much she did not have with Phillip away constantly. The feeling of his strong protective arms about her, the powerful ineffable feeling of being adored with all the love and passion another can feel. It was a heady feeling and an addiction that Tara now could hardly believe she had nearly forgotten the sole aching need to feel. She had never needed that love, that embrace to be a woman, but she could not deny that she had never felt more womanly than when she was being held tight in Phillips's arms. It had been close to two years maybe even three years since Phillip had last ordained to hold his wife like that, it was becoming difficult for Tara to
remember what it was like to be held like that, yet still, if she concentrated hard enough Tara fancied, she could still feel the ghost of his touch, those strong warm arms about her the soft husky timbre of his, gravely voice above her protective and yet dripping with desire for her. A conflicted look of passionate affection which had been as evident in his words and voice as it was in his eyes when they had finally separated, that had always made Tara's legs weak at the knees. Watching the scene play out before her, Tara was only marginally surprised to see that a similar look from Theo had Jack reacting in the same manner to how she remembered reacting to Jack's father.
Totally ignoring the presence of Jack's mother, the two rushed off to Jack's room an easy gentle conversation flowing between them. Tara watched them go still shocked at the recent development. She heard Jack's door click closed above her and briefly wondered if she should tell them to keep the door open, it is what she would do if it were Macy and a boy or Jack and Victoria yet she wasn't quite sure under the circumstances what she was supposed to do. It didn't seem very responsible to leave them up there with a closed door, especially with the look she had seen her son give Theo and the way they had wrapped each other in such a loving embrace, it certainly worried Tara no end. Equally, she was not even sure that Jack was aware of his feelings and she didn't want to embrace him or Theo. Strolling back into the kitchen Tara busied herself making yet another cup of coffee this was definitely a more than one cup of coffee morning she decided. That conversation with Jack, which Tara had been planning to have, had just gotten a whole lot more complex and complicated.
That evening Tara sat relaxing on the sofa, all in all, things hadn't gone as badly as Tara had feared they might. Theo had stayed several hours before departing in the afternoon. A blushing Jack had confided to her that they had spent most of that time curled up together lying on Jack's bed watching TV on his laptop. Nothing serious had happened between the two that of them, nothing would have alarmed Tara, but Jack did speak dreamily about being held by Theo. They had talked a lot about first Theo and then Victoria. As they went on, Jack's confusion, the dilemma he was stuck in, became more and more apparent to Tara. It hurt her heart to not be able to do more for Jack than to listen to him, even her guidance was of little help. It was clear that Jack had passionate newly discovered feelings for both Theo and Victoria. Those feelings were causing her son no end of anguish and confusion.
"How do I choose between them, Mom, these feelings are all so new, I wish I understood them more, maybe then I would know what to do. I just don't understand how I feel, or what I want. Theo makes me feel so safe and warm, he is so pretty in a ruggish boy kind of a way. I really like being around him, but Victoria makes me feel so alive and adventurous. She is just as pretty but in a more subtle soft feminine way. Theo likes lots of the same sports I like and talking is easy between us, but Victoria gets my humour better, we always end up giggling when we are together. How can I possibly choose between them? They both make me feel giddy when they are close by and I miss both of them when they are not with me, even when one of them is and the other isn't. Being held by either of them is so good, it's like being wrapped up in love, it's magical."
"Follow your heart, it will know and remember that you are still only fifteen, you don't have to know yet." Tara had soothed him, pulling him into a motherly hug.
"What if it doesn't?"
"It will," Tara had told him confidently, then a few moments later and more retrospectively she continued with a sigh. "I really hoped I would have another year before things like this came up, for both you and Macy. I guess I never figured on you being such a little temptress." A smile played softly over her lips at this last sentence and quickly turned to laughter, laughter so infectious it soon spread to Jack as well until they both sat huddled together giggling.
Now sat on the sofa thinking back on the day's events, Tara could not help but be slightly worried for her son. A son that so often now seemed like a daughter. It was a dangerous situation he had unwittingly sound himself in one that Tara would have far rather he had not, Tara had never been in that situation but her best friend in high school had when she was only a year or two older than Jack was now. The two boneheaded testosterone-filled territorial idiots had beaten each other up over the poor girl. Tara had spent days consoling the girt and nursing the battered girl's injuries. The bruising and black eye had been unintentionally inflicted when the misguided girl had tried to intervene in the violent struggle, she had herself provoked. Tara could only hope that Victoria and Theo would be less violent and more civil than that. That they would not give in to their violent impulses as quickly as her friend's boyfriends had all those years ago. Both seemed rational and sensible enough, but you could never be sure with something like that and the fact that there was less testosterone in one of Jack's suitors did nothing to calm Tara's growing fears. She had seen just how violent women can get in situations like this when one of her other friends had broken up with her girlfriend. The two lesbians had caused a domestic which necessitated the police with the visceral hate and violence between them, despite the decided lack of testosterone.
"So how was Theo yesterday?" Macy asked her brother, the light of yet another bright and beautiful morning filtering through the windows.
"We had a good time mostly just watched things and talked." Jack admitted easily, ignoring his sister's amused expression.
Macy was about to question Jack further when his phone buzzed with a notification. Jack's hand immediately leapt to grab it, causing Macy to grin even wider this time. Jack had few friends and few contacted him regularly enough for him to be constantly texting him but since Victoria had become his friend Macy had seldom seen her brother without his phone in his hand, either responding to or reading one of Victoria's texts.
Looking over at Jack's beaming grin, Macy couldn't help but let out a small giggle. Jack looked up met his sister's eyes and Macy's giggling became infectious. After several minutes when they had both stopped giggling, Macy asked Jack what had caused his grinning in the first place.
"Victoria just invited me over to this afternoon." Jack explained showing Macy the messages excitedly.
Macy nodded after reading the text. Victoria was indeed inviting Jack over, Macy noted that her name wasn't mentioned at the same time that Jack realised it.
"I'm sure you'd be welcome to come as well, sis." Jack belatedly offered.
Macy was already shaking her head as Jack spoke. Victoria had deliberately not mentioned her name along with the invite, Macy was certain this was because Victoria wanted to spend some time alone with Jack. Not to mention Macy was not sure she wanted to be third web wheel to Victoria and Jack again, such a position got very awkward fairly fast. Whatever Jack and Victoria were to one another Marcy was certain that she didn't want to be in between them while they figured it. Not to mention Jack didn't socialise much with other people, on one of the rare occasions where he was Macy felt it would be better if he did that without her acting as a buffer between him and those he was interacting with.
As usual, Jack's feelings on which gender he should look, feel, and act like flip-flopped throughout the day. He had woken up feeling as male as the society expected him to be, but after talking with both his sister and Victoria, Jack was definitely in a much more feminine state of mind and being. The thought of seeing Victoria's parents jarred Jack into considering his appearance, and how they might view him and he immediately ran to Macy to consult with her about everything.
Jack's immediate instinct had been to dress in one of the cute outfits he had bought while shopping with Victoria and was quite upset when Macy patiently explained that that wasn't a good idea. Jack wanted to argue with her but could totally see the sent sense of her argument. Victoria's parents didn't know Jack that well and neither Jack nor Macy could be entirely sure how they would react if Jack turned up in full-on girl mode. Not for the first time did Jack wish that he had more control over his emotions and when he felt feminine or not. It wasn't like a button he pushed though; it was a lot more complex than that Jack wondered briefly again whether a boy had the right to feel, or should feel the way he felt. Then Jack pushed that ongoing invasive thought to the side to focus on infinitely more important things, clothes.
In the end, Macy was able to help Jack, who she knew was firmly entrenched in girl mode, select a compromise outfit. A blouse that was not too overly feminine was selected, as Macy had pointed out, most men are far too unobservant to realise that the 'shirt' Jack was wearing buttoned the wrong way. Best of all it was one of the ones that Jack had with got during the shopping trip with Macy and Victoria. Which made Jack feel considerably happier even if he couldn't wear one of the more overtly feminine outfits he had initially wanted to wear. Macy found some girls jeans in one of Jack's draws, they were black and went well with the blouse. The jeans had no obvious patterns that indicated they were women's jeans, so while Jack could still feel feminine in his girly clothes, unless someone examined the clothes or the clothes tags carefully nothing would look unusual.
The effect, once Jack was dressed, was exactly as Macy had intended. The clothes fitted Jack's slender figure well. The cut of the clothes and Jack's own girlish physique combined to give a very natural. Girlish look. But the clothes were plain enough that the entire look could easily be explained away as a metrosexual boy's look. Macy hummed and smiled as Jack twirled about in front of her, she was exceptionally pleased with her efforts.
As Jack left to walk to Victoria's house, Macy found herself very glad that she had this unusual relationship with Jack, at times it was like having a sister. Macy knew as they got older this would disappear, idly she wondered if it was selfish to take as much pleasure in this unusual relationship and to want to cling so tightly to every memory of it. Pushing those thoughts to the side Macy found herself deeply worried for Jack, Macy was still unsure of his strange new relationship with Victoria, a girl that Macy had never been especially close to and had never fully trusted. Worse there seemed to be a romantic element to that new friendship, an element that she was unsure either Jack or Victoria were fully aware existed. Worse Jack's relationship with Theo had suddenly seemed to have taken on a romantic element that Macy was certain Jack did not realise existed. Overall, it seemed to Macy that Jack was far over his head with two extremely complex romantic situations at the same time. Macy could not help but feel the sinking crushing weight of apprehension settle on her heart, Jack was so unprepared to deal with this and Macy could not stand the thought of Jack getting his heart broken. Sadly, it seemed one way or the other Jack was headed for just such a disaster and Macy felt helpless, unsure how she was supposed to protect Jack from both himself and others in this scenario.
Jack was greeted warmly by Victoria who pulled him into a tight embrace warm with feeling and regard, as soon as he arrived at her door. Though he was slightly saddened to think that really she had greeted him as she would any of her girlfriends. Still, their relationship was new to them both and complicated making Victoria's greeting understandable to Jack, who soon forgot that thought, so distracted was he by the fluttering of his heart as he leaned his head on Victoria's shoulder and Victoria's heartbeat, fast like his own as she pulled him ever closer to her. Jack found himself and any thoughts he had previously had lost in Victoria's strong arms, her feminine floral perfumed scent, her slim figure fitting so well into his arms. Jack was lost in the moment and never wanted it to end, and in truth, Victoria was in the same position. She clung onto Jack and wished more than ever that she could truly understand her own feelings towards Jack, despite her mother's presence, Victoria with Jack in her arms could not help but want to kiss him and hold him tight. Tighter and more lovingly than any friend ever could, Victoria settled for holding him for as long as she could before letting Jack go and introducing him to her mother and father. As Victoria pulled away she playfully tucked a stray lock of Jack's long hair behind his ear.
Jack could not help but feel disappointment as Victoria pulled away from him, but quickly recovered himself as he was introduced to her parents. Both Victoria's mother and her father were cordial in their greeting of Jack though it soon became clear that neither of them were sure how to react to him due to neither was at all sure of which sex he was. Victoria's mother clearly thought he was an effeminate boy but was just as clearly unsure of her judgment. While Victoria's dad was it appeared quite certain that Jack was a girl but not entirely ready to bet on that certainty for fear of causing a scene. After a short while and the usual pleasantries, Victoria's dad left them. Moments later Victoria's younger sister came racing into the kitchen where they had all been standing chatting awkwardly, no one realising just how much more awkward things were going to get in the next handful of minutes.
Jack was introduced to Suzie who was eight years old and full of both energy and questions. Jack was immediately taken with the young girl who wasted no time in peppering him with lots of the aforementioned questions. Suzie for her part seemed to be fascinated by both Jack and especially his long hair. Suzie herself was just beginning to grow hers out of the bob her mother had had it cut to all of the little girl's life. Her hair was not yet even really properly shoulder length which her older sister's hair was. Jack's hair was longer than either of them with voluminous curls hanging down past his shoulders and a little way down his back.
Every question Suzie asked made Jack more and more nervous, he still had no idea how Victoria's parents would react to the gender issue. He was confident that at the moment he had so far gotten away with it. It wasn't really so much lying Jack felt as much as it was people seeing what they expected to see, over the years he had become comfortable like that whichever way he presented. People didn't often question what seemed obvious to their eyes and Jack was fine with that often using it to his advantage, yet he did not like lying to people outright and knew if he were asked directly then he would have no other option than to tell the truth. Predictably that was exactly what happened mere moments later and Jack with a sight revealed that he was in fact a boy, not the girl Victoria's father had supposed him to be.
Suzie didn't seem to care one bit in the peculiar way that often children do. It did not matter in her world and had no real meaning so that bit of meaningless information was immediately ignored by her. She went on talking to Jack as if nothing had happened, without even a pause. The only acknowledgement of Jack's answer from Suzie was a passing comment that not many boys had hair as long or as soft and bouncy looking as he did. In truth, Jack was glad of Suzie's continued conversation. Victoria's mother had gone very silent and Jack felt it would be even more awkward if the room had fallen completely silent, Suzie's constant conversation also helped keep Jack from worrying about what Victoria's mother and later her father would think.
Victoria's mother now only slightly shocked sought and found her daughter's eyes. The look was clear, they would be discussing this later. It now seemed clear the sauce of Victoria's self-proclaimed confusion of recent weeks. Victoria had refused to admit to her mother that there was anyone she liked, but Victoria's mother knew her daughter well, there was no hiding what was right before her. Victoria seemed deeply enamoured with this young man. Though it was difficult to consider him in such a manner, especially standing before him, he wasn't even trying to appear female and yet he seemed so feminine. It wasn't just the hair although that didn't help. It was the whole accumulative effect, the animated hand gestures, the graceful way he moved, even his voice had a higher pitch than she would have expected from a boy. His voice had such a girlish lilt to it, musical like a girl. No boy she had ever met had a musical voice like that. Victoria's mother knew instantly that she would need to have a long and not entirely pleasant conversation with her daughter, and an even less pleasant conversation with her husband, she winced as she thought what he would think of this.
Jack and Victoria stayed in town talking to Suzie for a while before heading up to Victoria's room, Victoria's mother who had not quite recovered from the revolution of Jack's gender did have the presence of mind to caution her daughter before they the left to keep the door open. She could only watch in stunned silence as the two girls, she could hardly think of them as at them as anything but, despite her newfound knowledge of Jack, hands clasped together walked out of the room eager to be at last alone together. Jack was so obviously a girl both visually and often in mannerisms that the truth seemed so incongruous with what was clearly before her eyes that it seemed to outweigh anything else.
Entering Victoria's room it was immediately dear that it was a girl's room, the walls were a light pale pink colour and a number of pale pink scatter cushions were dotted around the room. A vanity and full-length mirror were placed to one side of the room, it was also clear that Victoria at least made an effort to tidy her room. But that was the end of the femininity a heap of forgotten books and a couple of used cups showed that Victoria was far from perfect in keeping her room clean and an all-girl rock band poster was pinned to the pale pink wall. All this Jack took in, in the first few seconds of entering but not before Victoria had picked up on Jack's gaze.
"I know, I know, my mom especially has always had this image of me as a fairy princess or something," Victoria shrugged helplessly.
"I have got her to back down on the outfits at least mostly but I still can't get her or dad to agree to redecorate my room. "
"No, it's very nice, very pretty, I like it. My dad insisted on painting. My room in this monotonous single shade blue colour," Jack scrunched up his face in a look of disgust.
"So I can definitely empathise on that point."
Pulling Jack into a warm embrace Victoria laughed lightly.
"So, what colour would you have liked?" Jack let a slight warm tingly shudder creep down his back as he leaned into the embrace. Shutting his eyes for a moment he took in the sensations and his own overwhelmed feelings. Victoria's body seemed to fit around him well, it wasn't as all-encompassing as Theo's embraces, different but very similar at the same time, just as the two people themselves, but the feelings they invoked remained constant Jack felt every bit as safe, protective and the same sense of belonging in Victoria's arms as Theo's. Victoria's warmth was accompanied by a soft floral feminine scent while Theo had a stronger more masculine scent, a mix of his deodorant and the mint shampoo and shower gel he habitually used, but both were equally intoxicating to Jack. Jack felt the same butterflies in the pit of his stomach as he had around Theo and he already knew that he felt the same pull to be near Victoria as he did to be near Theo.
Jack had to pull away slightly to be able to allow his overwhelmed heart and mind to consider Victoria's question.
"I don't know, a pale blue with maybe a purple or pale pink accents."
"Sounds perfect for you." Victoria told him, only half listening as she pulled him closer to her.
Her arms about him Victoria's lips sought and found Jack's in a bright hot explosion of pent-up passion. Victoria's tongue found Jack's and surprise but not displeasure was visible on Jack's face. Jack was considerably taken aback by Victoria's hasty lust but found her passion heating up his own emotions. Now that they were pressed together like this Victoria and her body had become the sole focus of Jack's world and he could not imagine wanting to change that. Suddenly Victoria's tongue which had been playing a flirtatious game with Jack's own retreated from his own and began playing instead over Jack's lower lip and Victoria's hand which had been placed on Jack's lower back crept under his t-shirt running up and down the soft delicate skin in a passionate massage that allowed Victoria to feel all the small hard muscles of his lower back. A massage that, made Jack moan involuntarily into Victoria's mouth. Eventually, they pulled apart as much for oxygen as anything else and began to marshal control over themselves again, although not before Victoria in the act of reluctantly pulling away had worried Jack's lip playfully with her beat teeth her lust-filled eyes staring directly into Jack's in a dominance filled moment that had, had Jack week at the knees.
"Come on lover boy let's go lie down on my bed and watch something," A naughty glint came to her eyes burning there with intensity. "Never heard of Netflix and chill?"
"V....Victoria I don't think I'm ready for that." Jack stammered out his eyes downcast, shocked by her words.
"I know that silly, I was just joking." Victoria comforted all trace of the lust gone from her eyes and expression, pulling him close in a friendly less passionate embrace and leading him towards her bed. Sitting down on her bed Victoria found Jack a tissue to dab the tears that had begun to roll down his cheeks away. Leaving only Victoria to internally chastise herself for her poorly thought-out word choice.
A long while was spent by Victoria and Jack in this way curled up together watching TV on Victoria's computer with brief interludes of intense passionate kissing and hugs. Until they were interrupted by Victoria's little sister who walked into Victoria's room to demand they both play with her. So from then on the couple spent the day involved in imaginary tea parties and learning the names of Suzie's teddy bear collection, with occasional breaks for Suzie to admire and play with Jack's long sleek hair. Before he left though, Jack did manage to talk to Victoria about Macy's idea of a pre-cheerleading practice and Victoria promised to round up several of the girls for a practice the following day.
It was not long after Jack's departure that Victoria found herself collared by her mother for a mother-daughter discussion, something that Victoria was not at all surprised by. Victoria knew that she had well and truly let the secret of her crush on Jack blow to the wind for all to see as soon as Jack had arrived. Once again Victoria found herself wondering about her self-control around Jack, at best she didn't seem to have any inhibitions and at worst she found herself acting like a horny boy. It was difficult for Victoria to accept as that urgency boys so often displayed was one of the traits that Victoria had always found unsettling, it was not something Victoria was happy to discover about herself. She would do better, Victoria chastised herself wordlessly, not just because that side of herself scared her just a little bit, but because she didn't want to scare Jack away. All unknowingly Victoria knew she had done that already, had hurt Jack like, made him feel small and that what they had between them came with a price. Victoria especially hated that aspect of this, she didn't like that she had made him feel that way and she didn't like the idea of making Jack upset one bit, so she reasoned she would have to do much better at keeping some level of control around him.
"Your boyfriend ... was ... nice." Victoria's mother began hesitantly, in truth the topic was so massive that truly she had no idea where to begin.
"Yeah," Victoria sighed and replied dreamily. "He is isn't he."
This only served to make Victoria's mother more uncomfortable, and less certain where to begin. She decided that as a mother she had to force herself to have this conversation with her daughter and decided on a different more direct approach.
"Is he, a boy I mean?"
Victoria considered for a moment de sore before answering. A pause that seemed to put her mother even further on edge.
"For the moment he has told me he is so he is. But he has got a very feminine vibe to him that does undermine that, I don't think it would surprise me too much if at some point he realises that she is a girl. But until he tells me that then he is a he."
"But his hair." Victoria's mother was trying desperately to take in her daughter's logic and it was already hurting her head.
"I know, and I have seen him in girls' clothes as well, he looked really cute. But clothes and long hair won't and doesn't make him a girl any more than I would be a boy if I shaved my hair and wore exclusively boy clothes. It takes more than that."
Victoria's mother sighed, she couldn't disagree with her daughter.
"Well, I don't know what your father will think. I know he was hoping for your boyfriends to be a couple of years down the line and manly men who he can talk about football and baseball with. Jack seems more likely to want to talk about the colour of the nail varnish you or he are wearing. God help us if he turns up in a dress, I think your father might despair."
"Daddy will just have to get used to the idea that's all, if my boyfriend turns up in a dress, he will just have to lump it and at least be civil. As for sports I don't know about football but I do know that Jack is very interested in baseball and even the wants to try out for the high school baseball team next year."
You will have to be patient with him, Victoria, with me as well, it's a lot to take in. I mean if you were only gay that would be one thing, but this, this is a lot more," Then another thought sprang to her mother's mind. " Are you sure about this, Victoria, you told me before that you thought you might be gay. This isn't some type of rebellion against that."
"No." Victoria told her simply but flatly, she knew in her own mind that what she felt for Jack was far more than that.
"OK, then baby. As long as you know what that. I don't want either you or that poor boy hurt by this I will talk to your father but god knows what he will make of all this." Victoria's mother pulled Victoria into a much-needed motherly embrace after the tying and emotional conversation.
Jack stood outside his sister's bedroom door considering if he really wanted to talk about this with her. Somehow the topic seemed deeply personal and he had been debating whether to talk to Macy about it all the way home from Victoria's house yet he felt he desperately needed to talk about it with someone and he really didn't want to talk about it with his mother, that would be far to awkward. Finally making up his mind Jack entered and began talking almost immediately as if fearing that if he didn't then he wouldn't at all.
"Sis, is it normal for someone to want to move forward when dating quicker than the other is comfortable with?"
Macy wearing a onesie and sprawled out on her bed took a moment to answer. In truth, it was something she and her friends had talked about often but like everything with her brother how to phrase her answer was critical.
"Yeah, it's fairly normal, especially if the couple are alone for any length of time. Attraction leads to kissing and kissing to aggressive petting and sooner or later to somewhere that truthfully neither are ready for, especially at our ages, usually it's the man who tries to push things. A couple of girls in my friendship group crudely put it as guys get too horny far too easily. But that is by no means exclusively guys."
"Thanks, sis," Jack feeling marginally better about everything told her slightly revealed. "It's just with Theo yesterday it was mostly nice and he is very understanding but even then there were a couple of times I could tell he really wanted to take things further and I am really not ready for that yet. Then today with Victoria it was amazing and I really like her but there were a couple of times today where she really tried to push things but I really didn't want to go there yet with her either."
Macy's eyes softened slightly.
"Don't let them, either of them, push you further than you are comfortable with." Tell them to stop and take a step away from whichever it is, give them space to let passion ebb away. Remember you are not obligated to do anything, that should never be a requirement, no matter what anyone says. If either of them doesn't stop when you tell them to, they will have me to deal with and I promise you I will find a way to hurt them."
Captain Wheeler stood at the railing of her own ship, sleek and fast she was a work of love dedicated in timber from one of England's finest boat builders, it was still difficult for her to believe, her lifelong dream was now a reality. Until eleven days ago she was merely the first officer and part owner of the pirate ship Maiden's Revenge, now along with the title of captain she also held the distinction of being sole owner, not that it would matter much if she were ever caught since the ship was technically stolen property. Still, there was no need to dwell on such things no-one had ever beaten the Maiden's Revenge in a fair fight or an unfair one, and tensions across the world were high, global shipping was more prevalent than ever, there were no shortages of cargo ships for the Maiden's Revenge, which was currently low in the water loaded down with stolen cargo and loot.
Kathrine Wheeler was an old hand now both as a sailor and as a pirate, she had been serving on pirate ships, five different ships in total, since she ran away from her aunt's care at the tender age of fifteen. Kathrine had contrived to disguise herself as a man and signed aboard one of the only ships that would not give a lot of scrutiny to anyone wishing to join, a stinking half-rotten old boat crewed mainly by the dregs of society. The ship, one of the whaling ships had been truly terrible to work on crew quarters where tight arguments were quick to break out and violence was common, it was only a week before one member of the crew had beaten another to death over a game of dice. It was to Kathrine's great delight and salvation destined not to complete that journey at least not with Kathrine on board. Kathrine had tried to keep out of the way and go unnoticed, but they were still only two weeks out of port when she realised that the supposed teen boy that she was, was rapidly gaining the amours attention of several of the rapists, unsavory members of the all-male crew. It had been a relief when the whaler's captain had acted rashly firing his two small cannons at a pirate ship that he felt was too close. The pirates easily overpowered the whaling ship without any difficulty, being very disappointed when they found the ship empty of anything valuable despite the now-dead captain's bravado. Kathrine had never been more grateful to anyone than when she had begged to be able to and was granted leave to join the pirate ship's crew. Since then, Kathrine's competence and tenacity had carried her up the ranks and onto better ships, she had signed aboard the Maiden's Revenge, the biggest, fastest, and cleanest vessel she had served on, two years ago at the age of twenty-one as the first officer.
Piracy wasn't a safe life, but Kathrine enjoyed it immensely, it offered her freedom in all aspects of her life and fulfilled a sense of adventure that she could have found from no other type of life. The danger of this life was however difficult to ignore at the moment, the previous captain had died in the last raid on a Spanish cargo vessel whose cargo, barrels of wine, and a small chest of gold coins, were now in the cargo hold of the Maiden's Revenge. Kathrine had sat beside the captain when he died, a slow and drawn-out death, the sword cut across his chest had proved too hard for the ship's surgeon to treat. After hours of pain and suffering, he had died. He had been merely seven years Kathrine's senior and had left behind no wife, children, or family of any kind. What little he had, had at the time of his death was now Kathrine's out of respect for her rank and ability. To a certain degree, Kathrine thought it was a small mercy for the man, he had been spared the degradation that his poxed body would have driven him to, a legacy of one-to-many nights spent at cheap brothels. The example that had lead to Kathrine herself being minorly more choosy over such places, the pox was not limited to infecting men and however she died Kathrine did not intend it to be the legacy of such an encounter.
Kathrine left the left the railing banishing her thoughts as she did so. She called the quartermaster to her cabin; he was charged with sharing out the loot and acting as the voice of the crew. Kathrine would get the largest share with the first officer and quartermaster getting the second and third largest amounts. Kathrine's cabin was not that big, it had a wooden desk, and two comfortable chairs, one on either side of the desk. A solid wooden door separated her office from her bed-chamber that was sparsely decorated a bed stood in the middle, her sea chest at the foot of it, and a wash bowl in the corner. After the quartermaster had left Kathrine sat reflecting on her choice to keep her gender secret from the crew, as far as they were concerned, she was Thomas Wheeler. She had no choice, she knew, the crew would never accept being led by a woman, losing her ship would be the least of her concerns if they ever found out.
Docking at Port Royal had been done without any problems or issues Kathrine's crew showed their skill, and despite their eagerness to get ashore, each knew their jobs and did them quickly but diligently. Captain Wheeler, standing on the quarterdeck had no complaints about her crew's speed, truth be told she was just as eager to be on shore, she had several tasks on shore to do before she could enjoy the pleasures of a port town like this held. Usually, the captain of a pirate ship would not be so confident about leaving the ship, even for a few hours but with the haul of loot they had taken recently Kathrine was confident they would not mutiny on her. However, some precautions would still need to be taken. Kathrine had no intention of spending more than a few hours at a time a shore and would send her crew ashore in groups each spending a few days at a time. Kathrine hoped to spend a month or two in Port Royal, it had been a long time since they were last at a port and the Maiden's Revenge would need to be fully restocked before she was ready to set sail again.
The first task Captain Kathrine Wheeler had upon leaving her ship was to find various traders so as to negotiate the resupplying of her vessel, hopeful for as few coins as possible. Thankfully Kathrine had dealt with most of these traders before when she had accompanied the captain in his dealings with them. Port Royal was a place where you could find anything you might need or anything you could think of whether you wanted it or not. It took Kathrine, or as she was known to most people in Port Royal Thomas, only a couple of hours to arrange the resupply of the ship, although it had cost several coins more than she had anticipated. She had bought several casks of hard tack from one hard-nosed grubby-looking merchant. Six barrels of rum from a portly snappily dressed merchant who directed her to another rather portly merchant with whom she arranged the refilling of the ship's water barrels. Several casks of dried meat that she was assured would be at least palatable, from a butcher who lived on the outskirts of the port town. The butcher was an agreeable fellow and Kathrine had felt several stabs of guilt while conversing with him as the only reason she knew of this butcher's shop at all was a short dalliance with the man's wife and eldest daughter when she was last at Port Royal.
These tasks taken care of Kathrine began to think of her next moves with a mix of longing and anticipation. She knew where her next task would lead her, one taken purely on behalf of herself and as much a social call as it was a task. Kathrine had spent hours in the privacy of her cabin carving and shaping the object she had hidden in the pocket of her trousers, the object was covered in first a layer of cotton then a thin flexible layer of leather, both were glued to the wood and both materials had perfectly contoured to the ridges and bumps beneath taking the shape exactly of the wood. However, this was still not finished, to finish it Kathrine needed the services of a competent saddle maker, someone who could construct leather straps and harnesses. Fortunately, she had made the acquaintance of a saddler and his small family several years ago. The man was a hard-working fellow who owned a small plot of land, dotted with apple trees, on the outskirts of the sprawling town, it was there that John Harrison had his shop as a saddler and maker of worked leather goods. Kathrine had struck up a conversation with him in one of Port Royal's many taverns which had eventually led to a friendship between the two despite the two decades that separated them. Kathrine had eventually opened up to him both about her gender and her sexuality. Unlike a lot of people over the years he had been supportive and kind towards her further cementing their friendship. It was to John's dwelling that Kathrine was headed towards now.
Kathrine expected that her arrival would not be unexpected or in any way a surprise to her old friend, Kathrine had talked her plan through with John on her last visit. The second reason that she suspected he would have pre-empted her visit was a little more complicated, John had a young daughter, she was eighteen now, a lithe, slim, intelligent, and adventurous girl with her father's talent for leather work. The girl, Elizabeth, was beautiful, she had deep blue eyes with long flowing blonde hair. Kathrine knew that John worked hard to keep her away from his daughter, she had only met the girl three times each time being overwhelmed by her beauty and intelligent, captivating eyes. John did have reason to be protective of his daughter, he had heard to some extent or another of Kathrine's reputation and so whenever her ship was in port, and he had reason to suspect that Kathrine might visit him he sent his daughter over to one of the neighbouring houses or farms.
After congratulating Kathrine on her promotion, John had carefully inspected Kathrine's handy work on the phallic-like object she had created. As Kathrine had expected her arrival had been anticipated and Elizabeth was away at one of the neighbouring farms. Kathrine couldn't help but feel the slight sting of disappointment but pushed that aside as soon as she felt it, she quickly reminded herself that John wasn't doing this out of malice he was just fearful for his daughter. Kathrine could understand that she knew that her reputation for prolifically seducing young women was well known and certainly not unwarranted, whenever Thomas Wheeler was around heartbroken women would follow. Kathrine had never turned any companion away young, old, or married Kathrine didn't care but she never stayed with any of them for long.
The saddle maker had, over the course of the last year, given the idea some thought, and now with Kathrine's handy work in front of him, he was able to rapidly create a plan as to how the straps would work and what he would need to do to construct it. After designing the harness and running the plans through with Kathrine, John invited her to join him and his wife Charlotte for a cup of his homemade cider. He had several trees on his property and all of his neighbours privately if not publicly acknowledged his cider as some of the best they had ever tasted.
The cider had been decidedly good, and Kathrine always enjoyed talking with John and Charlotte they were two of her only genuine friends. Friendships had always been difficult for Kathrine; she had never had many growing up preferring the company of men to that of women. Her best friends growing up were the Thomas family, who had three children close in age to Kathrine, her best friend Mary-Anne was only two years older than her, James who Kathrine had first become friends with was the same age as her, and Caroline a year younger than Kathrine. All three had been good friends until the day James and his father had discovered Kathrine experimenting with the two girls, that had ended Kathrine's friendship with them the fallout leading her to the life she now led. James had certainly made it perfectly clear that their friendship was over when he had fought her two days later. "If you want to act like a man then I will treat you like one." Was his parting shot before the violence began, and he had been true to his word Kathrine came away with multiple bruises and a split lip for her trouble though she had given back nearly as good as she had received. Very few of her shipmates knew her true identity, most believing that she was merely an undersized, lanky man who might still bulk out a bit in time. That lie was necessary, but it did make genuine friendship more difficult, and as she had quickly risen up the chain of command that too had formed a considerable barrier to friendship.
It was during their third cup of cider that the subject of Kathrine's project came up. She told them that she had first thought of the idea when she had heard of a similar device from one of her many hookups far from Port Royal, the woman in question had lived in a small port town in the new world. The idea of a strapon had exited Kathrine and had begun her quest to make it a reality. After she had finished, John had begun to explain to Kathrine his interest in the idea, he hoped with Kathrine's help, to replicate the design and sell them. So it was that Kathrine had sat at her best friend's hearth and had sketched out as best as she was able, the plans for the strapon onto pieces of paper.
"How will you market it?" Kathrine asked after a while. She knew that few in society were as accepting as John and Charlotte, God knows how a product like this would be received by most people.
"I had thought of speaking to Madam Lucy when I see her in a couple of days' time, she could then pass the word along to the right people." John answered. Madam Lucy owned one of the largest brothels in Port Royal. Kathrine raised an eyebrow at her friend's words.
"Madam Lucy enjoys horse riding," Kathrine bit back the among other things that was on her lips. "I have her saddle here, it needed some minor repairs, she will come and get it in two days' time, I thought I might talk to her about it when she does." John answered Kathrine's unasked question.
After arranging to come back in a week to see the culmination of her friend's work, Kathrine left John and Charlotte's dwelling. Madam Lucy's establishment was her next port of call, it was time, and Kathrine decided that she began enjoying her stay in Port Royal.
