DOJ Special Projects Archives:
Agent Ada Franklin couldn’t believe she was sent to the archives. The director of her department has been harassing her, and she has finally gotten fed up with it because he was so popular and well-connected in the DOJ.
She was sent to the archives department to work. Everyone knew that the assignment meant you would never be promoted up the chain of command. The archives were where people who could no longer do field work or were retiring were sent to finish their time before they left. She goes through the security procedures as she shows her identity card.
The middle-aged guard on duty looks up when she approaches him. She could tell he wasn’t happy that she was interrupting him.
“Whatch you do to be sent down here?” Joe looks at the young lady standing before him.
“I spoke out against my boss.” Ada looks at the guard as he looks at her.
Joe shakes his head as he reaches for her identity card.
Ada hands her card to the guard. She saw that his name was Joe from the name tag he wore.
“I thought everyone went by their last name?”
“We do, but I don’t like mine, so I got permission to use my first name instead.” Joe runs the young lady’s card, and her picture appears on his
security monitor.
He notices that she was cleared for Top Secret clearance. He knew you had to have that level to work down here. Many of their old files and missions were still classified with the highest level possible.
He looks up at Ms. Franklin and hands her card back to her. Just before he releases her card, “Always keep this with you. Every time you leave and come back. You must check in with whoever is on duty here.”
“Aren’t you always here?” Ada looked confused.
“Most of the time, yes. However, another guard and I switched up. You’ll meet him in a few days. Go to room 314 and see Mr. Moore, and he’ll get you all set up.” As Joe releases the card to Ada.
“Where is room 314?” Ada looked confused.
“End of the corridor and turn right. Third door on the left-hand side of the hall.”
“Thanks, Joe.” Ada pulls her cart behind her as she walks down the corridor.
She noticed each door had someone’s name or a file room name on it. The rooms didn’t use standard terms on the door. One entry had Alpha, Beta, Cappa, Delta, etc. She turns the corner and notices the room numbers. She finds room 314 and knocks on it.
“Enter!”
Ada enters the room and notices a desk in the middle with a bald man sitting behind it. He had two new flat-screen monitors sitting in front of him. There was some music playing at a low volume.
A plastic cart was sitting next to him on his right with a stack of files on it. On his other side was another cart with stacks of files on it. It looked like he was pulling files from one cart entering them into the computer system, and putting them on the other cart when he was done with them.
Ralph Moore looks up when his office door opens. Standing in front of his desk was a young-looking woman wearing a business suit. She wore her dark brown hair at regulation length. He noticed that she wore glasses and that they were gold-rim. She was gripping a portable handcart beside her that looked like it held a few boxes.
“What can I do for you?” Ralph watches her.
“I was informed to report to you, Mr. Moore.” Ada wonders how long this man has been down here.
“And your name is?” Ralph switches the screen to look the woman up.
“Agent Ada Franklin, sir.” Ada watches Mr. Moore.
“You can forget about the agent part, Ms. Franklin. It doesn’t mean anything down here in the vault.” Ralph taps Ms. Franklin’s name into the system and watches as her file appears.
He notices that she was transferred down to his department by Andy Cornelius. He looks at her education and who her instructors were. He noticed she had average scores from her training. Some notes about her said she shouldn’t be given any field assignments.
One of her instructors felt that it would be a waste to toss her out of the program, considering how many hours of training have already been spent training her. He noticed that her IQ test was very high. It was around a hundred fifty-five.
He reads several more notes that had been written about her, particularly the one her supervisor inputted to get her transferred to his department. He knew that Andy Cornelius was a sexist and believed all women should bow down to him. This wasn’t the first time he had punished a woman for speaking out against him.
Ralph looks at Ada “I’m going to assign you the office directly across from mine, Ms. Franklin. You’ll have to do some cleaning to it. We don’t get janitorial service down here. I’ll send you a packet of acceptable behavior and the dos and don’ts for this department. Your primary job will be going through all our paper files and inputting them into the computer system. You’ll be assigned a file room and just start at the first file and go from there.”
“When am I allowed to take a lunch break and what will my work hours be?” Ada was curious about what her hours would be.
“All of that is in the packet I have just sent you. You’ll need to keep your office locked when you aren’t in it. If, for some reason, you lock yourself out. Just have Joe or Martian to let you in.” Ralph pulls an electronic card out of his desk and scans it.
Ada watches as Mr. Moore scans a card and hears a beeping sound. She watches as he writes down a code on a post-it.
“Here you go, Ms. Franklin. You’ll be asked to enter a new password for your computer access and door access.” As Ralph hands the card to Ada.
Ada accepts the card and the password written on the post it. She looked back at him and noticed he had gone back to work. She turns and walks out of his office. The office she was given was room 313, which was right across from his. She noticed it had a solid wooden door and an IR card scanner. She puts the card in front of it and turns the handle.
She entered the office, which wasn’t very big. It was set up just like Mr. Moore’s office with the desk right in the middle of the room. It had two chairs in front of the desk and a cheap office chair behind it. She walks around and sits down on the chair.
She noticed it had the same type of monitors she saw in Mr. Moore’s office. The keyboard was your standard keyboard for all computers. The computer was in a plain black box with no company logo. So, she didn’t know if it was a Dell, HP, or Lenox. She knew it wasn’t an Apple computer. A slim scanner was connected to the computer, so she could scan documents.
She turns it on and notices the home screen. It was a plain desktop with the same background you found on all office computers. It had a bunch of folders on one side, and an access portal popped up asking for her credentials.
Ada types in her first initial and last name. Then, she typed in the password she was given. It informs her that she needs to enter a new sixteen-number password containing capital letters, symbols, numbers, and special characters.
It takes Ada a few minutes to think of one. She enters the new password, watches as the screen logs her out, and pops back up asking for her password. She enters the new password, and the screen changes to what it was before.
Her email program alerts her that she has twelve new emails. None of the previous emails she received from her other position were in her email account. She opened the first one and started reading it. An hour later, she finishes reading them. She had to sign some of them and send them back to the sender digitally.
She was allowed to take lunch between noon and one to two. She was also required to process at least two hundred forty files daily. If she could do more, she was encouraged to do so. She was assigned a room and given a map of that room, along with the code to it.
Ada gets up, grabs her keycard, and locks her door as she exits from it. She holds two carts from the supply room and puts one in her office. The second one, she walks down to the room assigned to her and enters it. There were boxes with files in them stacked everywhere. It was like someone had just come in and dumped the boxes.
She grabs four boxes and puts them on her cart. Afterward, she walks out of the room and locks it behind her. She dropped the cart off at her office before locating where the breakroom and the women’s bathroom were. The bathroom only had three stalls, and no one had used it in years.
She checked everything out and made a note to replenish everything that was out. She’ll have to put in a special work order for the items or buy it herself. She didn’t mind buying the supplies herself if she had to.
After cleaning the bathroom up, she returns to her office to learn what she must do. The files were to be destroyed after they had been entered into the system along with scans of everything.
She goes to work entering the first case of files. She stops and reads some of them. She wanted to know what the Department of Justice has been up to since its inception. She noticed many important files were blackened out, but if she held the paper just right, she could see some of the blackened-out portions.
Before long, her cell phone rings, letting her know that she can leave. She didn’t want to stay behind. The work itself was uncomplicated but so dull. She was all alone with only the music recorded on her cell phone for company.
If she wanted to make a call from her office, she had to use the internal phones, which she knew were being monitored. Ada locks her office up and leaves the basement of the DOJ building. She was so glad to feel the cool air as she walked outside of the building.
When Ada gets home, she kicks off her heels and plops on the sofa in her small apartment. She wasn’t even hungry, as she just sat on her couch and wonders if she wanted to stay and do the damn job. She knew if she left, her former boss would win. That was the reason why he sent her there in the first place.
She grabs a pillow and squeezes it as she cries. She joined the DOJ hoping to bring justice to people who have been wronged. Instead, she was being locked away in a windowless room no more significant than her walk-in closet, doing paperwork. She trained to be an agent, not a paper pusher.
She cries herself to sleep. During the night, she has a weird dream of being dressed like the agent from the insurance commercial she has seen on television. She was chasing after someone and was dodging bullets being fired at her. There was a wolf by her side as she chased the prep.
Her brain is a little fuzzy when she wakes up in the morning as she tries to remember where she was. Usually, she would wake up in her bed.
However, once she figured out where she was, she got up and headed towards the bathroom to do her morning business and shower.
She strips out of her clothes and drops them into the hamper on the way to the bathroom. She wanted to get to the gym before work and work out some. She tries to stay in shape, and her apartment building has one on-site.
She changed into her gym clothes and went down to the private gym. Usually, it was just her and one other person. An NSA agent she knew from her time at Langley. The two of them loved competing against one another.
Lately, she hasn’t seen him much. She wondered what he was up to as she ran on the tread machine. She has it set for a steep incline to work her leg muscles and heart. She does at least ten miles on the treadmill and lifts some weights afterward. She wasn’t looking forward to work today.
She gets in a good set of lifting weights. By the time she finishes working out, she is hungry and sweaty. Ada towels off as she heads back upstairs to her apartment.
Once Ada arrives at her apartment, she strips out of her gym clothes and steps into the shower. She gets out after half an hour and gets dressed for the day. She’ll grab some breakfast on the way to work.
When Ada arrives at work, she heads to her office and starts on the files. She doesn’t bother to take a lunch. She works through it and leaves at the end of the day.
Day after day, it is the same for her at work. Her social life sucked because she had a hard time trusting people. She used to be bullied and picked on by the guys and girls at the private school she attended.
At her prom, she was escorted by a guy she thought she could trust. Afterward, they went to a private party and ended up having sex with him and several guys after someone spiked her drink. It was a good thing she had the foresight and very strict parents to have a birth control device inserted into her arm to prevent her from getting pregnant.
After that day, she left for college and never looked back or went home, except for the holidays. Even then, she just hung around her parent’s house and left afterward. She hated where she lived. Most of the guys were assholes, and most of the girls she went to school with were either snubs or bitches.
Her best friend ended up becoming a stewardess and marrying some rich guy. She was invited to the wedding but wasn’t part of it. Her best friend just wanted to do too much, and what she wanted to do was out of her price range. She was barely able to afford the wedding gift she gave the couple.
She worked through college to pay for everything. She bought her clothes from thrift stores and drove a car that was thirty years old. It took a lot of hard work and sacrifice to get what she wanted, but she managed.
The days turned into weeks. The weeks turned into months at her new job. She was so bored she read some of the cases. Some of the old cases were interesting but boring and could have been handled better. She made copies of some of them on her phone and read them at home. Most of them were so old that it wouldn’t matter anymore.
She did come across a few that were done by an agent named Nick Law. It seemed that he was part of a unique team. They secretly operated under the table, handling cases that had gone cold or couldn’t be solved by ordinary police or FBI agents. According to what she found, the people involved were Nick Law, Jack Allen Bounty, Clair Elizabeth Wong, Nancy Holmes, Phillip Spade, and Dave Valiant.
Those people piqued her interest as she dug into their files. Their files were classified and weren’t in the system. She knew if they weren’t active agents. Their files might be here in the archives. She locates which room they would be stored in and gains access.
She locates all their files and scans each and every one of their files into her cell phone. She even finds a map of a place they used to operate out of. She takes the map with her. She has always been curious about secret locations and things of that nature.
She goes back to her office and finishes working for the day. The weekend was coming up, and since it was a holiday. She would have five days off to do some exploring.
Ada stops at Kentucky Fried Chicken and picks up a bucket of chicken with her favorite sides. She didn’t feel like cooking when she was working her way through college. She practically lived on chicken and cans of beefaroni.
When she arrives home, she downloads all the files she found on each agent into her mini laptop. This one was bought at a yard sale and had some work done. It was also the one she kept a lot of particular files on. She had everything backed up on a portable hard drive and a thumb drive.
She brings up Nick Law file first. He was born on October 21, 1948, Age 31. Location: Boston, Massachusetts. Country: United States, Parents: Father: Jack Glenn Law, Mother: Mary Ann Mercer. Marital Status: Single, Military Service: US Army, MOS: Force Recon.
She reads his file and discovers that he went to Harvard to become a lawyer after serving several tours in the Vietnam War. He was awarded several metals and wounded several times. He joined the FBI after he got his law degree.
The person she looks up to next is Jack Allen Bounty. For some reason, that name meant something to her. She does a web search and discovers that he owns a large telecommunication firm named Eruptions Communication in New York City. He also owns several other telecommunication firms, satellite companies, security firms, armor businesses, private security firms that went by Alpha Security, and various other companies.
He lived in Caldwell, Montana, and had seven children. One of his children was the owner of the Phoenix Foundation. She types in the Phoenix Foundation and learns they specialize in helping other nations fix environmental damages and establish irrigation systems and independent energy solutions. The person who ran that company was Gina Bounty. It showed her with her husband, Arnold Bounty.
She goes back to his file. His name was Jack Allen Bounty, DOB: May 15, 1947, Age: 32, Location: Dublin, Ireland. Country: Ireland, Citizenship: Duel, Parents: Father: Joseph Earl Bounty, Mother: Cara Elizabeth Waters. Marital Status: Single, Military Service: British Military MOS: Special Air Service.
She reads his file and discovers that he also worked for MI 6. His grandfather was a cattle owner out in Montana, and the property had been given to his grandfather’s side of the family during the western expansion of the United States. His grandmother had been one of the two first women who had been a US Marshal.
Clair Elizabeth Wong DOB: March 15, 1953, Age: 25 Location: Sunnyvale, California Country: United States, Citizenship: US Citizen, Parents: Father: Kenji Wong, Mother: Barbara Ann Jones. Marital Status: Single, Military Service: None MOS: N/A
Ada looks at what made Clair Wong so special. According to her file, she was a circus performer and martial arts expert. She was good at getting into places no one could and seduction.
Nancy Holmes DOB: June 21, 1957, Age: 21 Location: San Francisco, California Country: United States, Citizenship: US Citizen, Parents: Father: Jacob Holmes, Mother: Nancy Ann Jones. Marital Status: Single, Military Service: None MOS: N/A
Ada saw that she was a child prodigy and came from a family of detectives. Her father was a famous detective from the San Francisco Police Force, and she had solved six cases by the time she was recruited to join the others.
She had been arrested several times for breaking into people’s homes and businesses. She never attended college but was exceptional in science and forensics. She also spoke several languages and could read several dead languages.
Phillip Spade DOB: July 21, 1948, Age: 31 Location: San Francisco, California Country: United States, Citizenship: US Citizen, Parents: Father: Robin Drake, Mother: Carol Ann Cook. Marital Status: Single, Military Service: United States Navy MOS: Gunner Mate
Ada reads a little about Phillip and discovers he is a real character while in the service. He had several medals but got busted a few times for a lot of illegal activity. He punched an Admiral one time for getting him and several of his friends killed one time. He was a good friend of Nick and Jack.
The three of them were known as the terrible trio. There wasn’t anything the three of them didn’t do together. When it came to friendship, theirs was tight.
Dave Valiant DOB: September 03, 1948, Age: 31 Location: Detroit, Michigan Country: United States, Citizenship: US Citizen, Parents: Father: Shawn Valiant, Mother: Terri Armstrong. Marital Status: Married, Military Service: United States Army MOS: Transportation.
Ada noticed that Mr. Valiant was a race car driver and could drive almost anything with wheels or wings. He was also a mechanical genius as well. He could do nearly anything with it if it had gears or pistons.
She leans back against the sofa and wonders why the DOJ would put a team like this together. If their job were to deal with people who worked outside of the law, this would be an excellent team to have. She closed their file and took out the map of the location she found. She digs and finds that the map leads to a farm outside Washington, D.C.
According to the location, the property was owned by Clair Williams. Ada looked at the picture and the photos of the people she had to compare the two, but nothing matched. She had some things on hand she could use to explore the place. However, she must go to a hardware store to get more items. She brings the location up on Google Maps and gets directions. It was about an hour away from her apartment.
She sets the alarm on her cell phone to wake her. Afterward, she lies down and wonders what she’ll find when exploring. There had to be a reason that the map was in the archives.
Ada finds herself driving out to the location she googled last night. She located a place where she could park her car without being observed. She stopped at the hardware store and bought the extra items to explore the area. That also included some super strong rope and something she could use as an anchor.
Ada pulled up to the spot she selected and parked her car. She grabs her backpack, water bottle, compass, and gloves. She locks her car and starts following an old path. The weather was a little cool but bearable.
She starts walking into the woods, and after about a few hours, she comes to the location on the map. It was an old barn, and no one looked like they were inside the house. There was no car or animals in the driveway. The map itself was back at her place. She had a copy of it on her cell phone.
She cautiously walked inside the old barn and noticed it was of Amish design and build. This thing could withstand a hurricane without any problems. She started looking around, and everything looked normal to her. She stands in the middle of the barn and wonders if she was wrong.
She looks at one stall and notices something doesn’t seem right. She walks over to investigate and sees it is a hook. It was different than all the other ones. She turned it, and the floor dropped open, and a set of wooden stairs led down under the floor.
She follows the stairs down with her mag light in hand. She noticed there was another hook down below. She turns it, and the floor seals back up.
“To the Bat Cave.” A playful smile appears on her face as she follows a corridor.
As Ada walked down the corridor. She noticed there were lights recessed in the ceiling. Her mag light lit the corridor up. A set of double doors was at the end of the hall. There was a keyhole in the middle of the doors.
Ada takes some putty and puts it inside the keyhole to get the shape of the key. She pulled the putty out and noticed it was a strange shape. She tapped the doors and could tell these doors were thick. They could stop a grenade fired at them.
Nancy was on her way home from the store when an alert appeared on her cell phone. She looked at it and noticed it was from the old alarm system down in the tunnel leading to the old Den. She knew Jack had put in an up-to-date secret alarm system to let her know when someone was in their old lair.
She increases the speed of her pickup truck and arrives back at her place. She pulls the shotgun mounted in the truck and loads it. It’s been nearly fifty years since anyone has been to the old lair. All they did with it these days was use it for storage since most original team members were either dead or retired.
Most of them were too damn old to be out chasing people. Things have changed as members either died off or formed families. All her children have left home and had their own families. Sometimes, she hears from them on the holidays or her birthday. Occasionally, she would visits them. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed visiting them.
Sometimes, she hears from the surviving members of her old team. She knew Jack still did things like this, and so did his partner, the Cheshire, as for the others she knew. They were happy to let things be.
She cautiously enters the barn and walks over to the entrance. She opens it and walks down the set of stairs. She flicks the hidden light switch and watches as the lights come on.
Ada was trying to figure out the lock when suddenly the overhead lights came on. She puts her hands up. “I don’t mean any harm.” As she turns slowly around.
When Ada turned around, she spotted a silver-haired woman with a shotgun pointing at her. The woman was shorter than her.
“Who are you, and why are you poking around down here?” Nancy had her trusty shotgun pointed at the young woman.
“My name is Ada Franklin, and I was curious whether this place existed. I found it on an old map where I work.”
“And where is that?” Nancy was lowering her shotgun.
“I work at the DOJ Special Projects Archives. I found an old map that had this place listed. If you don’t mind me asking, are you Clair Williams?” Ada hopes she doesn’t mind.
Nancy thought all maps showing this location had been destroyed. It was because of a map that this place had been compromised.
“I’m Clair Williams. Why are you so curious about this place?”
“Can you lower your gun, ma’am, please? I promise I won’t do anything. You have my word. Besides, if you are who I think you are, you could probably kill me before I moved.” Ada thinks this woman could be Clair Wong from the files.
“Follow me out of here.” Nancy wonders who this woman thought she was.
“Yes, ma’am.” Ada walks towards the woman slowly.
She walks past the woman up the stairs and outside the barn. She stands still as she watches the woman secure the latch to keep the floor from opening. For an older woman, this person moved pretty well.
“Let’s go inside the house. Do you like tea, Mrs. Franklin?” As Nancy leads Ada towards her house.
“I’m more of a coffee drinker, but I don’t mind tea.” Ada follows the woman.
Ada noticed she wore blue jeans, tennis shoes, and an old flannel shirt. Once they were up at the house, Ada followed Clair into the house. The inside was what you would find inside an old country home.
Ada follows Clair into the old-style country kitchen. She hadn’t seen anything like this unless it was in a magazine.
“Please, have a seat, Ms. Franklin.” Clair motions to one of the chairs at a small handmade table.
“Okay.” Ada sits down on one of the chairs. The seat had a nice, handmade cushion.
As soon as she sat down on it, she could feel how comfortable it was. She looked around the kitchen and could tell who this Clair person was. They had a big family and a loving husband at one time. She watches as Clair puts a kettle on to boil water.
“So, Ms. Franklin, are you here on official business, or is this personal?” Clair turns around after putting the kettle on the burner and turning it on.
“Personal, no one at the agency knows I’m here.” Ada looks at Clair, trying to read her.
“And why is that?” Clair looks at Ada, trying to figure her out.
“What do you mean?” Ada was a little confused about the question.
“Why did you come by yourself instead of informing another agent or bringing a friend?” Clair/Nancy looks at Ada.
“Because I wanted to see if the map was true and learn more about what you and your group did. You have to remember. You operated with limited resources and no technological advantages in the late seventies and early eighties. Nowadays, you have satellites, cell phones, laptop computers, and computer mainframes with AI programming to help you.”
“True, our job was more challenging, but we did what we do best. As for our mission. As you read in the files. It was our job sometimes to eliminate or right the wrongs that regular law enforcement was either too corrupt to do or unable to handle.”
“But that goes against everything the rule of law stands for.”
“Does it? Our system has become corrupt, with politicians working against the common good. They want power and to keep that power. They don’t care if people like you or me get hurt. If things keep going down the route they are, I’m afraid we will become a dictatorship or, worse, end up like England used to be.”
“How does that make you any better than those people?” Ada wanted to believe that they had done the right thing.
“You do know why Lady Justice wears a blindfold, don’t you?”
“Because justice is unbiased and should not be based on a person's appearance or other outside influences.”
“True, but in the last sixty or seventy years. Justice has been going to people who have the money to change things. They have been corrupting the system and taking away the rights of the people. They are stacking the deck, so only the desired verdict will happen. That’s where my team stepped in to make sure the scales were even. If it meant taking out the person who caused the problem in the first place, so be it.” Clair watches Ada’s reaction.
“But that’s just wrong. You can’t be judge, jury, and executioner.”
“True, we can’t. However, you have to weigh the lives of the many against those of the one or the few. Should a crook be allowed to live while his victim suffers? Should his or her money and connections be allowed to get away with poisoning a village or town? All because they want to get rich and don’t care how they do it?”
“No, but you should have some oversight. Someone to reign you in, to keep you from going too far.” Ada felt being able to kill whoever you want is too much power.
“We'd first had oversight, and they did well with us. However, after a while, that oversight nearly crippled us. We were being increasingly restricted by regulations and blocked from doing what was right. The people we went after broker deals to stay out of jail or from being killed. In the end, a person we spared nearly killed us.”
“How?” Ada wanted to learn more.
“Because we listened to the person who was supposed to be neutral and not take sides. However, he betrayed us to our enemies and nearly ended all our lives. From that day forward, we pledged to work independently and not answer to anyone we didn’t trust.”
“And how did that turn out?” Ada watches as Clair prepares her tea.
Clair sets the teacup down in front of Ada. She looks at her “We’re still alive.”
Ada was startled by that statement and the expression on Clair’s face. She had a feeling that she was one of the people deeply affected. She watches as Clair sits down near her.
Clair takes a drink of her tea. She looks at Ada “So, what is your story? Why would someone like you be so interested in a bunch of old geezers like me and my team?”
“What do you mean?” Ada takes a sip from her tea.
“What is your story? How did you end up down in the Archives?” Clair was watching Ada. She was good at reading body language.
“Well, I was born in a small conservative town. My parents sent me to a private school and I was raped by several guys at a party I shouldn’t have gone to. I trusted my date for prom and ended up regretting it.”
Clair places her hand on Ada’s “I’m sorry you had to experience that.”
“Me too. My parents felt it was my fault since I should have come back home instead of going out with my date afterward.” Memories of that night surface every once in a while.
“Why did you join the DOJ?”
“Because I wanted to bring justice to those people who were wrong. My town had a lot of stuck-up rich people who could get away with a lot of things. I come here to Washington D.C. and run into congressmen and senators that are the same way.”
“But what did you do to get transferred to a boring, dead-end position, like the Archives? Because agents who work there are normally people who are about to retire or are bookworms who feel more comfortable around a bunch of old reports and books.” Clair has known a few people who loved working in the archives.
“My supervisor was making uncomfortable comments about how I was dressed and when we were by ourselves sometimes. His hands tended to roam. I found out that he managed to find the footage that had been taken of me when I was raped by several guys after prom.” Ada had managed to backtrack some footage that had been sent to her email.
“And when you complained, he transferred you down to the archives.”
“Yes.”
Clair looks at Ada and wonders if she would make a good agent. She knew Washington D.C. had a lot of corrupt people in it. Well, not everyone was corrupt. She knew some trustworthy people.
“I’m willing to make you a deal. If I show you the inside of our old base of operations. You have to promise to never speak about it. There are things down there that can never get out. Either because of how dangerous it is or because the world isn’t ready for it yet.”
“You sound like you guys have aliens or something down there.” Ada was curious about what was down there.
“Let’s just say there are things down there. That has been on this Earth for a very long time and should have been left alone.” The only place Clair and her team trusted was here and their secondary base. The secondary base, God help whoever went inside of there.
Clair and Ada finish drinking their tea. Afterward, Clair escorts Ada through a hidden passageway that goes from her house to the base.
“How many entrances do you guys have?” Ada was following behind Clair as she escorted them.
“Several, but they are used mostly for emergency exists.”
After a while, they come to a door. Clair takes out a key from her pocket puts it in the keyhole and opens the door.
To be continued…..

“Joker, I can’t believe how joyful you are.” Deanna looked over towards her teammate and how she was dressed.
Joker wore a sexy Santa Claus outfit that matched her feelings for the holiday. She was chewing on a candy cane as she helped decorate the Christmas tree. Usually, she looked like the Joker from DC comics, except dressed in a female version of his outfit.
Deanna knew Joker’s real name was Barbara Willow, and she used to be a correctional officer. She had been captured and tortured by the inmates. The prison was experimenting with a new drug that would help inmates with mental problems. The inmates, after they were done using her for their pleasure. They injected the drug directly into her mind from the base of her skull.
The drug sent her body into shock and did some weird things to her. By the time the Department of Corrections took control of the prison. She appeared dead to the paramedics who found her. Her body was transferred to the prison morgue to be examined and prepared for burial.
Days later, when her body had finished changing, the drug triggered in her. Her eyes opened just as the medical examiner was about to cut her open. She reached out and killed the medical examiner. She escaped from the morgue and made her way to an abandoned building several miles away.
“Oh, come on, Deanna. Didn’t your LARP group teach you about having fun?” Joker turns around to look at her strawberry-blonde hair teammate.
“Yes, they did. I’m just surprised that you like Christmas so much.” Deanna knew how crazy Joker was.
“Deanna, Deanna, even crazy people like the holidays. It’s the one time of the year where we don’t seem out of touch with people. Well, make that Halloween and New Year's Eve as well.” Joker smiles at her teammate.
“She’s right, Deanna.” Brooke enters the living room carrying a tray of glasses filled with eggnog.
Behind Brooke were Becky, Clair, Jasmine, Ada, and Alya. Jasmine carried a tray with homemade cookies, brownies, and rum balls. Ada and Alya were wearing elf costumes.
“Brooke, it doesn’t matter who is right or wrong. It’s all about the spirit of the holidays.” Becky was dressed in a sexy green dress with white fur trim, matching thigh-high boots, and a green Santa Claus hat with a silver bell at the tip of it.
“I’m just glad you girls survived your last mission.” Clair was happy that her girls didn’t die.
“Next time, we need to stop a nuclear device from going off. Don’t call me again to deactivate it.” Brooke looks at Clair since she is the one in charge of them.
Brooke has been studying and learning from Clair about criminal forensics and such. She came across Clair’s real name while researching some of the top criminal forensics from the past. Brooke was a lot like Velma Dinkley from the television cartoon Scooby-Doo.
She was just as bright, intelligent, and observant as Clair used to be with her team. Before joining Clair’s team, Brooke used to be a member of a ghost-hunting team. On their last ghost-hunting job, they came across actual supernatural creatures that killed her crew and left her for dead. A friendly spirit entered her body and gave her its life essence.
It prevented her from dying and made it so she could see and interact with the dead. Sometimes, the gift it gave her was a burden. There were times she would come across helpful spirits, and there were times she came across evil spirits. All they wanted to do was harm the living. Some of them would even take possession of people to achieve their objectives.
“I’ll remember that next time it comes up.” Clair couldn’t believe Nick and Jack had blessed her to form a team.
She had no choice after a merc team sent by Nickolas Kuznetsov attacked her farmhouse. At the time, it had just been her, Alya, Jasmine, and
Ada to defend the place. Becky had shown up to deliver Alya’s car and got dragged into the attack.
Later, they met Deanna and Joker while on a job in Georgia. Brooke tracked her down to interview her for a paper she wrote for her college course. She noticed how intelligent Brooke was and how she would make an excellent addition to the team.
Everyone grabs an egg nog and helps themselves to the cookies Clair, Alya, Jasmine, and Ada made. Becky had been fixing two of the place's geothermal generators in the den. She and Deanna were the techs on the team. Deanna rebuilt and upgraded the old computer system the site used to use. It had been ahead then but had become outdated over the years.
Instead of using standard hard and SSD drives, Deanna switched everything over to a crystal-based memory-based system. One, the crystals never broke down; two, the system could store more information on the crystal.
All the ladies take turns singing different Christmas songs. Clair sings I’m dreaming of a white Christmas. After Clair finishes singing, Joker sings Grandma got run over by a reindeer. She evens acts out parts of the song.
After Joker is done singing, Becky sings the Redneck Twelve Days of Christmas. The girls get a kick out of it. Jasmine sings Santa Baby, just like Marilyn Monroe did.
Ada has an evil idea as she stands up from the sofa. She was feeling a little tipsy from the egg nog. She looks towards Clair. “You spiked the egg nog, didn’t you?”
“No comment.” A playful smile appears on Clair’s face.
“Just for that, this song is just for you.” As Ada drinks the last of her egg nog.
Afterward, she started singing. I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus, except she substituted Mommy for Clair’s name.
Wow! Mommy's kissing Santa Claus!
I saw Clair kissing Santa Claus (kissing, kissing Santa Claus)
Underneath the mistletoe last night
She didn't see me creep
Down the stairs to have a peep
She thought that I was tucked up
In my bedroom, fast asleep
Then I saw Clair tickle Santa Claus (tickle, tickle, Santa Claus)
Underneath his beard so snowy white
Oh, what a laugh it would have been
If daddy had only seen
Clair kissing Santa Claus last night
He saw Clair kissing (kissing, kissing) Santa Claus
I did! I really did see Clair kissing Santa Claus
And I'm gonna tell my dad
Then I saw Clair tickle Santa Claus (tickle, tickle Santa Claus)
Underneath his beard so snowy white
Oh, what a laugh it would have been
If daddy had only seen
Clair kissing Santa Claus last night
Oh, what a laugh it would have been
If daddy had only seen
Clair kissing Santa Claus last night
I did! I did! I really did see Clair kissing Santa Claus
You gotta believe me! You just gotta believe me!
Come on, fellas, believe me!
You just gotta believe me!
Come on, you gotta believe me!
All the women start clapping as Ada takes a bow. She stops herself from falling forward.
“She’s drunk.” Alya stands up to help Ada.
“I’m not drunk, maybe a little tipsy, but not drunk.” Ada held onto Alya as she looked at her.
“Right, you’re not drunk.” Joker had a massive smile on her face.”
Alcohol no longer affected her like it used to. The changes done to her body made it so she wasn’t affected by any drug. That included animal and plant venom as well. The drawback was drugs meant to help her didn’t work on her either.
It’s two in the morning by the time everyone starts passing out. Jasmine was sharing her bed with Brooke. The two of them didn’t mind sleeping with each other. Jasmine knew Brooke was into women and didn’t mind.
Ada and Alya were sharing a bed as well. They have become close friends since joining Clair and would sometimes have lunch or get-togethers in the evening.
Deanna and Joker shared a room. Joker didn’t mind sleeping with Deanna. She trusted Deanna and knew she wouldn’t harm her. Both women were sleeping naked.
Joker looks down into Deanna’s emerald green eyes as she straddles her waist. She leans down and starts kissing Deanna while rubbing herself against Deanna’s groin. She was a little aggressive in her lovemaking.
Deanna wraps her arms around Joker’s neck and holds her against her lips. She moves her body in time with Joker. She knew Joker was aggressive in her lovemaking and liked to be in charge. This wasn’t the first time the two of them had had sex.
Becky was sleeping in Clair’s bedroom. Clair had a rollaway for her to sleep on. Sometimes, she would sleep with Brooke. She knew Brooke was into women and didn’t mind sleeping with her. Her great-uncle asked her once when she changed gender if she was still into women.
Clair looks over at Becky as she makes herself comfortable. The young woman had a few scars on her body from some of the accidents she had been in.
“You know, if you keep going the way you are. You’re going to be in pain when you get to be my age.” Clair knew her old teammate Dave Valiant had been in much pain as he got older from his past injuries.
“I try to be careful, but sometimes, things happen beyond my control.” Becky looks at Clair and the pictures of her children and grandchildren hanging on the wall and her nightstand.
“Clair, why aren’t you spending this Christmas with your children and grandchildren?” Becky was curious why she wasn’t with her children.
“I think it's gotten to the point that they no longer need me. They knew what I used to do and aren’t too thrilled I’m back to doing it.” Clair knew how her children felt about her being active again.
“But you’re not in the field. You’re making sure we don’t fuck up.” Becky knew Clair acted as their support back here at the den.
“I know, but my children feel I’m bringing attention to them and myself. The main reason I got out of the game besides getting old. It was because of my children. I didn’t want to risk their lives with my activities. That was why I changed my name and had plastic surgery to change my appearance.” Clair has only told a few people why she did what she did.
“So, why are you back in the game, then?” Becky wanted to know why Clair had changed her mind.
“To guide you, youngsters. You all seemed lost and looking for a purpose in life. Individually, you guys are special, but as a team, you guys are unbeatable.”
“I never thought about that.” Becky looks thoughtful as she lays back on the mattress.
“Goodnight, Becky.” Clair smiles as she snuggles under her covers.
A few miles down from the ranch:
“Here you go, young lady. This is as far as I go.” Ted looks at the young girl sitting next to him in his truck.
Carol looks at Ted. “Thank you. You’ve helped me out a lot.”
“Be careful, Carol.” Ted watched as Carol walked down the highway.
Before long, Carol spots her great-grandmother’s house. As she walks up the long driveway, she spots several cars parked. The lights were off except for the Christmas lights her grandmother put up. The porch light comes on when she steps up onto the porch.
She rings the doorbell. She wondered who those cars parked in the driveway belonged to. She heard movement behind the door.
Jasmine heard the doorbell ring. She got out of bed and grabbed her Glock before heading downstairs. Brooke was totally out of it.
Jasmine walks downstairs and over to the front door. She wonders who could be disturbing them on Christmas Eve. She unlocks the door and hides her gun behind her.
Carol watches as the front door opens and spots Jasmine on the other side. She wonders where her grandmother was.
Jasmine spots Clair’s oldest great-grandchild standing on the porch. She had an oversized gym bag with her.
“Carol, what are you doing here? Where are your parents?” As Jasmine steps aside to let Carol into the house.
Carol enters the house and looks and waits for Jasmine to shut and lock the door. She puts her gym bag down on the floor. “I ran away from home.”
“Why did you do that? Especially on Christmas Eve.” Jasmine looked at Carol and noticed she was bundled up in several layers of clothes.
“It’s a long story, Aunt Jasmine.” Carol knew she would have to explain what happened between herself and her parents.
“Well, your grandmother is upstairs asleep. Why don’t you bring your gym bag to my bedroom, and you can sleep on the floor in my room.”
“Why can’t I use one of the spare bedrooms?” Carol picks her bag up and follows Jasmine upstairs.
“Because we have guests over, and all the beds are spoken for. I’m even sharing my bed with a friend of mine.” Jasmine leads Carol to her bedroom.
When the two women walk into the bedroom, Carol notices a woman with light brown hair sleeping on Jasmine’s bed. She wonders who the woman was. She finds a spot where she’ll be out of the way and sets her gym bag on the floor.
Jasmine grabs the air mattress from the hallway closet and fills it with air. She makes it up quickly so Carol can lie down and sleep.
“There, that should do you.” Jasmine looks towards Carol.
“Who’s your guest?” Carol was curious.
“That’s my friend, Brooke Jenkins. She’s studying under your grandmother.” Jasmine couldn’t tell Carol what they did.
“Okay.” Carol lays down on the air mattress, and her head hits the pillow no sooner. She is out of it in no time.
Jasmine crawls back into bed, feels Brooke’s arms wrap around her, and pulls her against her body. Jasmine doesn’t fight it as she feels Brooke’s breasts press against her back. Both of them were wearing nightgowns.
Christmas Morning:
Joker was the first person awake and was downstairs in the kitchen fixing pancakes for everyone. She had already cooked some bacon and sausage links. She already brewed some fresh coffee as well. She wore Deanna out last night and knew she would sleep late.
“God, I hope there is coffee.” Ada walks into the kitchen.
“Yep, there’s a fresh pot already made. Where’s your roomie at?” Joker looks over towards Ada.
“She’s still asleep. She’s not a morning person.” Ada knew Alya hated mornings.
“Neither is Deanna or Becky.” Joker had sex with Becky three weeks ago.
She had gone over to Becky’s place and played strip poker. She was down to her panties, while Becky was down to her bra. She won the last hand, and Becky ended up losing her bra. She still had Becky’s bra at her place.
Ada fixes a cup of coffee and moans as it slides down her throat. She tries to remember what flavor of coffee Clair always buys for them.
“Good morning, everyone, and Merry Christmas.” Brooke comes walking into the kitchen.
When she woke, she spotted the teenage girl lying on the air mattress, sound asleep in Jasmine’s bedroom. She had no idea who the girl was. She also wonders where she came from because she wasn’t there when she and Jasmine went to bed.
“So, did you and Jasmine have last night?” Joker looks at Brooke as she fixes herself a cup of coffee.
“No, but a teenage girl with dirty blonde hair was sleeping on the air mattress on the floor this morning.”
“I don’t recall a teenage girl being at the party last night.” Ada looks at Brooke.
“Neither do I.” Joker looked at Brooke when she answered.
“What’s this about a dirty blonde hair girl?” Becky comes walking into the kitchen.
“A teenage girl was sleeping on the air mattress in Jasmine’s bedroom this morning.” Brooke takes a sip from her coffee mug.
“That’s because she’s Clair’s great-granddaughter.” Jasmine comes walking into the kitchen, covering up a yawn.
“How did she get here?” Brooke looks towards Jasmine.
“Don’t know, but she’s upstairs right now talking to Clair.” Jasmine had woken Clair to inform her about Carol.
“I don’t know about you ladies, but I’m hungry.” Alya comes walking into the kitchen.
“Well, we have plenty of food.” Joker looks over towards Alya.
She takes a sausage link from their plate and eats it. Soon, everyone joins her as everyone finally wakes up. Joker set two plates aside for Carol
and Clair. The two women join them forty minutes later.
Clair didn’t know what to think about the situation between her granddaughter and great-grandchild. She understood both points of view, but it shouldn’t have driven a wedge between them. Clair informed her granddaughter that her daughter was welcome to stay with her until something could be agreed on.
When Carol enters the kitchen, she notices all the women in her grandmother’s kitchen. She had no idea who these women were or how they were related to her great-grandmother.
“Is everything okay, Clair?” Jasmine looks towards Clair when she asks.
“We have a little problem.” Clair figures she could take her great-granddaughter under her wing and train her.
“What’s that?” Ada looks at Clair and the teenager standing next to her.
“Well, before we start talking about anything, I would like all of you to meet my great-granddaughter. Carol, I want you to meet Ada, Alya,
Jasmine, Joker, Brooke, Becky, and Deanna. These will be the ladies you’ll be training under.”
Carol looks at her great-grandmother. “What do you mean to train with them, grandma?”
“Yeah, I have the same question as well.” Jasmine looks at Clair for an explanation.
Clair looks at her great-granddaughter. “It seems that Carol was expelled from her school for posting questionable photos of certain classmates on the web. Because of what she did, her parents wanted to send her to an all-catholic girl school.”
“How did you do it?” Deanna was a tech nerve.
“I hid cameras on them when they went to the bathroom or took showers at home. I recorded them.”
“How did you manage to hide cameras on them?” Becky wanted to know.
“Some of the girls were easy. I hid them in their tampons or purses. I also hacked the software of their cell phone and used that. Putting them in their homes was easy. I just invited myself over and pretended to use the bathroom. I left a few in their bedrooms as well.”
“Oh, that sounds so much fun. Disgusting but fun.” Joker liked the idea of hiding the cameras in the girl's tampons and such.
“How did the school find out it was you?” Ada was curious.
“Because I got careless. I posted the images on a revenge site and used my Gmail account.”
“I’m surprised the people aren’t suing you.” Alya knew she would.
“That’s the thing. They don’t know how much more footage I can blackmail them with.” An evil smile appears on Carol’s face.
“Why did you do it?” Brooke wanted the truth about that question.
“Because they go around and terrorize people at the school. The school does nothing to stop them because their parents contribute large sums of cash. So, they don’t want to rock the boat.”
“Which means they can get away with things.” Ada knew that was how things were done.
“Well, enough of this. We can discuss what to do after Christmas. Today, you girls will open your gifts.” Clair looks at her team.
“Oh, Goodie! Presents!” Joker was excited.
Jasmine looks towards Clair “Excuse me, but there is something I need to do.”
“Okay.” Clair noticed Jasmine looking at her and understood what she was going to do.
“Come on kiddo, let Auntie Joker show you how to party.” Joker wraps her arm around Carol’s shoulders.
“Oh god, we’re in trouble now.” Deanna knew her friend.
“Oh, I made breakfast, for you two.” Joker releases Carol walks over to the stove and removes two plates of food that are still warm.
She serves Clair and Carol.
“Thanks, Joker.” As Carol and Clair accept the food.
Jasmine was upstairs in her bedroom wrapping a few gifts for Carol. She bought a few extra gifts to send to people. She can always buy more and send those instead. She didn’t want Carol to feel left out, while they were unwrapping gifts.
After she finishes wrapping enough gifts. She takes them downstairs, where she hears Joker singing off-key. As Jasmine enters where everyone is gathered, she spots Joker singing to a karaoke machine.
“Okay, who gave Joker a karaoke machine?” Jasmine looks at all her teammates.
Deanna raises her hand. She knew how much Joker loved singing and wanted her friend to be happy. Now, she wasn’t so sure.
Jasmine shakes her head as she hands the gifts she wrapped to Carol. “These are from all of us, Carol.”
Carol looks at Jasmine and smiles at her. “Thank you.” As she accepts the gifts.
The rest of the day everyone enjoys their Christmas gifts and talk. Brooke, Clair, and Alya start on Christmas dinner for everyone.
Carol looks at all the women and wonders what her great-grandmother meant by training with them. She spots Ada walking over to her “Hey kiddo, how are feeling?”
“Confused. What do you ladies do?” Carol was confused.
“I’ll let your great-grandmother explain. Just know, we all are there for you.” Ada hugs Carol.
“Thanks.” As Carol returns the hug.
“You’re welcome, kiddo.”
Back At The House:
Jasmine arrives home and carries her backpack upstairs to her bedroom. She saw her grandmother’s pickup in the driveway and noticed that the shotgun was missing from the mounting rack. She grabs her Glock and quietly walks back downstairs. As she entered the kitchen, she noticed two teacups and the shotgun in the kitchen.
She tucks her Glock behind her back into her waistband as she hears a female voice coming from the kitchen entrance that led to the den. She stands and watches as the pantry door opens, and her grandmother exits from the pantry with a woman following behind her.
“Hi, grandma.” Jasmine smiles at her grandmother.
“Jasmine, did you just get home?” Clair spots her granddaughter standing in the kitchen.
“Yes, ma’am. Who’s your visitor?” Jasmine looks at the young woman behind her grandmother.
A smile appears on Clair’s face. She turns to face Ada. “Ada, I want you to meet my granddaughter, Jasmine Summerfield. Jasmine, this is agent Ada Franklin with the DOJ.”
Jasmine holds her out to shake Mrs. Franklin’s hand. She noticed that Mrs. Franklin looked like she was dressed for exploring. She also noticed Mrs. Franklin was of average height for a woman.
Ada shakes Jasmine’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Jasmine.”
“And you as well, Mrs. Franklin. So, what brings you out to my grandmother’s ranch?” Jasmine wondered why a federal agent was visiting her grandmother and where her car was.
Ada didn’t recall anything in Mrs. William's file about having a grandchild living with her. Then again, she didn’t do a deep dive into Mrs. William’s file either. She looks towards Clair to see if her grandchild knows about her.
A smile appears on Clair’s face when Ada looks at her. She wonders how Ada is going to handle this situation.
“My car broke down a little way down from your aunt’s property, and my cell phone gets crappy reception out here in the country.”
“And you were wondering if my grandmother could help you out. Then why were you coming out of the pantry with my grandmother?” Jasmine noticed her grandmother didn’t look like she was in trouble or distress.
Ada was flabbergasted by the observation this young woman had. She wonders if Clair trained her to be like that.
“Jasmine, Ada, let’s sit down and talk.” Clair smiles as she walks over to the table.
Ada follows Clair over to the table. She wonders how much Jasmine knew about her grandmother. She watches as Jasmine sits down at the table.
A smirk appears on Clair’s face. Jasmine was too much like her when reading people and solving problems. She looks at Jasmine. “Mrs. Franklin here came across an old map of the base and wanted to check to see if it was real.”
Jasmine looks at her grandmother and says, “I thought you said all the maps of this place had been destroyed.”
“And I thought they all have. Mrs. Franklin works in the Special Archives Department of the DOJ, and it seems they still had one of the original maps of the den.”
“Is that going to be a problem?” Jasmine was worried about her grandmother, even though they weren’t blood-related.
“It’s not going to be a problem. I have the only map that I know of from the special archives. By the way, are you Clair Wong, Mrs. Williams?” Ada wanted to get to the bottom of this mystery.
A smirk appears on Clair’s face: “My friend Clair Wong died in the early nineties from radiation poisoning. I’m Nancy Holmes. I changed my name when I became pregnant with my first child.”
Ada was stunned. She thought Clair Williams was Clair Wong.
“I think you broke her grandmother. Wait until she learns I was adopted by you?” Jasmine looks at Ada with a smirk on her face.
“You were adopted? Why were you adopted, Jasmine?” Ada was curious.
“Why don’t you two girls talk while I get dinner going.” Clair gets up and heads towards the deep freezer to retrieve frozen meat.
Jasmine looks at Ada. “I was given a second chance on life. I” as Jasmine thinks back to her old life.
“It’s alright if you don’t want to tell me.” Ada could see Jasmine was debating with herself.
“No, other than my grandmother and Nick Law. No one knew how rough life was for me and some of the bad choices I made. You see, I wasn’t born Jasmine Summerfield. I was born Frank Luciano, a young enforcer from the 'Ndrangheta Mafia.”
Ada has heard of the 'Ndrangheta Mafia. They are one of the most feared groups in the world.
“What made you want to get away from the mafia?” Ada knew no one ever left the mafia alive.
“I learned early in life that I enjoyed wearing women's undergarments. When I wasn’t doing what my boss told me to do, I would enjoy my time at a secret club where I could be myself. Of course, I went by a different name while I was there. Somehow, the higher-ups in my organization found out and decided they couldn't accept a homo in their organization.”
“So, they sent a hitman after you.” Ada has heard stories.
“Yeah, but not just any hitman. They sent Joe “The Animal” Barboza after me.”
“I’ve heard his name before. He is considered one of the best hitmen around. I know he officially has killed four hundred and ninety-five people. Unofficially, his killed count is like five hundred and fifty people.” Ada has seen his record when she attended Langley for training.
“Yeah, but he made the mistake of accepting the contract for Nick Law.” Clair/Nancy interjected what she knew.
“Who would have thought an eighty-year-old man could move so fast.” Jasmine had seen Nick move like he was in his twenties.
Clair smirked because she knew why Nick reacted so fast. She had been there when it happened.
“I take it you know something?” Ada had seen Clair smirking.
“It’s a unique story and not mine to tell you.” Clair wasn’t going to give Nick’s secret away.
“So, Nick took The Animal out. How does that relate to you?” Ada was curious as she looked at Jasmine.
Jasmine looked towards Clair before she spoke. She turned her attention back to Ada. “Nick gave me a choice. I could let him finish the job, or he could give me a second chance to make up for all the harm I did.”
“I understand now. So, let me guess, he paid for you to have extensive surgery to turn you into a woman?”
“Yes and no.” Jasmine looks over towards Clair for help.
Clair looks towards Ada “Remember when I told you there are things in this world that are too dangerous to let out?”
“Yeah, I remember. But as far as I know, there is nothing that can change a person. Well, let me change that. There’s some drug that is a rumor that can do it.” Ada heard about it.
“Well, I haven’t heard about that drug. However, the Russians found an alien device while researching down in Antarctica. My team was sent to either retrieve it or destroy it.”
“Let me guess, you guys told the government you destroyed it. But secretly transported it back here.”
“Oh no, it’s not here or at our secondary base. It’s at a location only known to three people.”
“Let me guess, this device can change a person?” Ada wonders what it was.
“Yes and no. It’s a medical device capable of replicating or building organs compatible to a person’s body.” Clair knew the device had been used on her.
“So, when they changed you. You became a fully functional woman.” Ada wonders if it is true.
“Yes, they used the device to change me and made sure I didn’t look like I used to. After what they did to me, Clair offered to let me stay with her and attend college. Ever so often, I do jobs for them in return.”
“Which you don’t have to, Jasmine. Nick and I made that very clear.” Clair wanted Jasmine to have a normal life.
“I know, but I must make up for all the bad I did. I know it will never erase what I did, and one day, I’ll have to answer for that.”
Just as Jasmine says that, there is a loud crashing sound out outside and an explosion. All three women run out of the house and down the long driveway. They spot smoke and fire coming from a crashed hi-tech-looking car. A person was trying to crawl out of a broken window.
Jasmine and Ada run over to the person when they notice them collapse and stop moving. Ada reaches the person first and grabs the persons arms.
“They’re stuck.” Ada looks towards Jasmine.
Jasmine looks around and spots one of the wooden planks from the wooden fence. She runs over to it and picks it up. She runs back over to the wreckage, jams it under the car, and lifts upwards with it.
“Trying pulling now.” Jasmine was using all her strength to pry the wreckage up.
“Okay.” She pulls the driver away from the car just as it explodes.
The explosions send Jasmine and Ada backward towards the ground. Both women were hurting from the force. Clair runs up to the wreckage with a fire extinguisher and uses it on the blaze. She looks at the women as they lay on the ground near the person wearing a heavily stained and brunt racing suit. She couldn’t see the person’s face because a black motorcycle-style helmet covered the head.
“Owe!” As Ada sits up. The front of her clothes had holes in them.
“I agree.” Jasmine was feeling the pain as she sat up.
Her face hurt, and since she was closer to the wreckage when it exploded. Her whole body was in pain.
Clair walks over to Jasmine “Are you alright?” As she helps Jasmine stand.
“I’ve felt better. How is the driver?” Jasmine saw Ada removing the person’s helmet.
Ada removes the person’s helmet and notices dirty blonde hair fall out. The person looked to be younger than her. She opens the racing suit so she couldn’t check her pulse.
“How is she?” Clair recognized the person from her trips to the local junkyard.
“She’s got a pulse. Its slow, but its there.” Ada was glad she was certified in first aide.
“Who is she?” Jasmine doesn’t recall seeing her before.
“She works down at the junkyard. Normally, you don’t see her because she is out in the yard pulling parts.” Clair has only seen her a few times.
A few minutes later an ambulance arrives and the fire department a few seconds later. The young woman is taken to the local hospital, while the fire department makes sure the car is out. The police take the girls statements. Clair isn’t going to press charges.
Afterwards, Clair, Jasmine, and Ada walk back to the house. Jasmine works on her homework for her criminal justice class, while Ada goes and bring her car to Clair’s place.
One in the Morning, Five Miles from The Ranch:
Alya manages to guide her car onto the shoulder of the road, just as it stops running. She tries to restart it, but all she gets is a clicking sound each time she turns the key. She picks her cell phone up and notices it didn't charged while it was plugged into the power outlet. She listens as the rain starts pounding against the roof of her car.
“Great! What else could go wrong tonight?” As Alya sits there looking out through the windshield into the darkness.
She was tempted to summon the fox spirit that resides in her necklace. At least the rain wouldn’t soak through the magical garment that protected her. She takes a deep breath and says “tracks” in native Cree tongue. There is a flash of orange light as her outer garments disappear and a form-fitting body suit appears on her body. A bright red tail with a white tip sprouts on the lower part of her back and red ears with white tips appear on her head.
Her hair changes from a dark brown color to a bright red color with frosted white tips. Her eyes change from brown to emerald green, as a mask of red and white appears on her face. Her ears twitch as the sounds of raindrops hitting her roof make a musical melody.
She grabs her car keys, and cell phone and puts them in one of the hidden pockets on her suit. She locks the passenger side door and gets out of her car. She made sure the driver's side was locked. She looked up the road from where she broke down and knew there was a farmhouse just up the road that maybe the occupant might be able to help her.
She starts jogging up the road as quickly as she can. The suit she was wearing kept her body warm and dry. As the rain just slides off of her. Her tail helps her balance as she runs down the state route towards the farmhouse.
Normally, she would never uses her Native American totem spirit for personal reasons. But in this case, with how hard the rain was coming down and the chill in the air. Plus, she was out in the middle of nowhere late at night. She felt better using her gift to protect herself and not getting soaked and catching a cold.
She was glad the talisman she wore changed her appearance so no one would recognize her. Also, the suit and the fox-shaped boots she wore made her footprints look like an oversized fox. It takes her very little time to cover the five miles from her broken-down car to the farmhouse.
Just before she reaches the farmhouse, she changes back to her normal-looking self and lets the rain soak her some. It would look kind of strange to be broken down five miles up the road and not look wet from walking down to the house. She notices the porch light is on as she walks down the long driveway.
Jasmine, Ada, and Clair are woken up by the doorbell ringing. Clair looks at her alarm clock and wonders why someone would be ringing her doorbell at one thirty in the morning. Just as she is about to get out of bed.
“I got it, grandma.” Jasmine grabbed her robe and Glock as she walked out of her bedroom and down the stairs towards the front door. She covers up a yawn as she flicks on the downstairs foyer lights.
She walks over to the front door and turns the deadbolt. She unlocks the door handle and slowly cracks the door open. When she does, she spots a young Latino-looking woman with shoulder-length hair, wearing a rain-soaked light blouse and dark dress slacks.
“Can I help you?” Jasmine wonders who she is.
First Ada shows up two days ago, along with Becky crashing into her grandmother’s wooden fence. Which, Becky was lucky that the car she was test-driving was equipped with a rollbar and five point harness racing seat belt. She only suffered minor injuries and was at home recovering.
Becky’s great-uncle wasn’t happy with her. He told her that the fuel she was using was unstable, but Becky wouldn’t listen to his advice. She had been lucky that she wasn’t in the car when it exploded. Now, this woman has shown up at her grandmother’s farmhouse.
“I’m sorry for bothering you, but my car broke down about five miles up the road from here. Can I use your house phone to call triple A, please?” Alya tries to keep her teeth from chattering.
“Jasmine, let her in.” Clair comes walking down the stairs.
“Yes ma’am.” Jasmine opens the front door wider for the girl to enter.
“Thank you.” As Alya enters the warm house.
She looks at the older woman and notices she is wearing a worn cream-colored house robe and slippers. She looks towards the woman named Jasmine and notices she is wearing an aqua-green nylon nightgown and a pair of socks. She couldn’t see any resemblance between the two women.
Jasmine closes the front door and secures it. She turns to face the woman standing close by.
“You must be cold. Jasmine, get our guest a towel please.” Clair looks at her granddaughter.
“Yes ma’am.” Jasmine walks past the young woman and her grandmother back up the stairs.
When Jasmine goes upstairs, she spots Ada standing at the top “Who is it?”
“Beats me. The woman said she broke down about five miles away from the house.” Jasmine walks over to the hallway closet to grab a towel for the woman.
“And she walked here in this weather?” Ada knew it was raining outside. She could hear it hitting against her bedroom window.
“Yeah, and she is soak to the bone.” Jasmine grabs a towel from the stack in the closet.
Downstairs:
“So, what is your name and how did you end up out in the rain?” Clair was curious about the woman.
She noticed the woman looked like she was of two different races. She also notices the red-shaped fox head totem hanging from the woman’s neck. She knew of a Native American legend that the fox shared its spirit with its chosen ones.
“By the way, my dear. My name is Clair Williams. You met my granddaughter, Jasmine. How did you end up broken down on the side of the road, Mrs.?” Clair was watching the young Latino woman.
“Alya Fuks. I was on my way home from a conference in Charlottesville, on Native American history. When my car started acting funny and my check engine light came on. The next thing I knew, I started losing power and I was forced to pull over. I was hoping to make it back home tonight because I work in Washington D.C. at the Native American Museum.”
“Well, you’ll be lucky to get triple A out here tonight. Why don’t you spend the night and dry off and you can call them in the morning?” Clair knew getting road service out here at this time of night was out of the question.
Alya looked kind of uncertain. She knew she could handle herself because of the martial arts training she took while growing up. Her father and mother made sure she could defend herself while growing up. She was always teased and picked on in school, because of being from a multicultural family.
Clair noticed the uncertainty in the young woman’s eyes and body language. She could understand why the young woman would feel the way she did.
“Look, I promise you are safe here. My granddaughter is in college and we have a person who works for the DOJ staying here as well. Plus, I know for a fact that getting someone out here tonight isn’t going to be easy.”
“I guess.” Alya reaches up with her right hand and rubs her amulet.
“That’s petrified wood, isn’t it?” Clair finally figured out what the amulet was made of.
“Yes, how did you know?” Alya was surprised.
“I have some in my collection. Your amulet looks to be of an old Native American design.” Clair recognized the design of the amulet.
“Yes, it was given to me by my grandfather before he died. He was a Cree medicine man.”
Jasmine comes walking back downstairs with a powder blue towel in her hand. She hands it to the young woman “Here you go. Why don’t you dry off and I’ll put some tea on for you to warm up from. You look to be about my size. You can get out of those wet clothes and I’ll toss them into the drier for you. If that’s okay, grandma.”
“That’s fine dear. Also, Mrs. Fuks will be spending the night with us as well. Why don’t you prepare the spare bedroom.”
“Okay.” Jasmine runs back upstairs to her bedroom and grabs one of her spare nightgowns.
Jasmine heads back downstairs to the foyer. She hands the nightgown to the young woman.
“If you would like to change. There’s a bathroom at the top of the stairs and another one just under the stairs here.” Jasmine walks into the hallway and opens the door to the bathroom.
“Thank you.” Alya starts walking towards the bathroom.
“While you are changing, I’ll get some water brewing for you and Grandma.” Jasmine heads for the kitchen with Clair following her.
Ada stayed at the top of the stairs and listened to everything going on. Since there seemed to be no problems. She grabs some sheets and blankets from the hall closet and starts making up the spare bed for their guest.
Morning Time At Clair’s Farm House:
Clair and Jasmine wake up first. Clair was the first one up and put her robe and slippers on, before walking downstairs. She peeks in on the young lady who ended up at her front door last night. The young woman was still asleep.
Clair starts making a pot of fresh coffee, instead of a single cup of coffee. As she brews the coffee, she wonders if the other girls enjoy freshly brewed coffee.
“Morning Grandma.” Jasmine waves to Clair as she comes walking into the kitchen.
Jasmine had come downstairs wearing her robe and slippers. When she went back to bed last night after getting Alya settled last night.
“How did you sleep, sweetie?” Clair knew Jasmine had stayed up helping Mrs. Fuks last night.
“I slept fine. I went back upstairs to my bedroom and no sooner did my head hit my pillow; I was asleep.” Jasmine walks over to the refrigerator and grabs two cans of cinnamon rolls to bake.
Clair watches Jasmine as she prepares two round baking pans for the canned cinnamon rolls. Normally, she would make them from scratch. However, since they had guests and one of them was asleep in the living room. She didn’t want to wake the young woman up.
While Jasmine prepares the oven for baking. Clair pulls out a pound of bacon and lays them out on a cookie sheet covered in wax paper. It makes it easier to clean and prevent the bacon from sticking to the pan.
By the time everything was ready to eat. Ada and Alya had woken up and came walking into the kitchen. Alya was still wearing the night gown Jasmine gave her to wear, while her clothes dried in the dryer. Ada was wearing her house robe and a pair of slippers that belonged to Clair. They were a little big on her tiny feet.
Alya was surprised when she woke up to the smell of cinnamon rolls, fresh biscuits, and bacon. When she walked into the kitchen she heard everyone gathered. She was even more surprised that there was freshly brewed coffee waiting to be drunk.
“Morning Alya.” Clair looked at Alya and could tell she wasn’t awake, yet.
Alya waves to Clair and the others. She wasn’t fully awake yet.
“I don’t think she’s awake, yet Grandma.” Jasmine saw how sleepy Alya still looked.
“I think your right, Jasmine.” Ada noticed that the woman who showed up last night wasn’t fully awake.
Alya looks at the brown-haired woman. She hasn’t met this person yet.
“I’m sorry, I’m Ada Franklin.” Ada holds her hand out to Alya.
“Alya Fuks. Mrs. Williams was kind enough last night to let me stay with her. My car broke down about five miles up the interstate.”
“You must have been soaked by the time you walked here.” Ada heard how heavy the rain was last night.
“She was soaked to the bone last night, Ada,” Jasmine remembered how soaked Alya was.
“After we eat and wake up some. I’ll take you down to your car, Alya.” Clair looks at Alya.
“Thank you.” Alya covers up a yawn.
Ada was debating what she should do since she came only to explore the old den. Since Clair already gave her a tour of the place yesterday. She wanted to know more about Clair’s group.
Flying Overhead:
Vadim had arrived early at the hangar where he stored his helicopter. His employer, Nickolas Kuznetsov had given him a few leads in locating a former enemy of his. He knew Mr. Kuznetsov wanted revenge against a former enemy from long ago. Mr. Kuznetsov had finally managed to escape the prison he had been sent to. He knew Mr. Kuznetsov wouldn’t risk going after the leaders of the group he hated.
He had already scouted them out and going after the first leader might work, but would draw too much attention to his group. As for the other person, he has heard that going after the Bounty clan was stupid. Mr. Bounty had a habit of making his enemies disappear. Every time someone has gone after Mr. Bounty, you never heard back from them. So, instead, he was going to go after one of the former members of the group that sent Mr. Kuznetsov to prison.
It had taken him some time and money to find out about this woman. She had covered her trail pretty well, but using a little force and a lot of money had gotten him some results. He preps his helicopter for take-off and files a flight plan.
He takes off from the airfield and flies out towards the location he was given for Clair Williams. The file he had on her, didn’t match the picture in the file he had gotten about the woman. He could see some resemblance between the two pictures. But he wasn’t sure if the two women were the same.
Back At Alya’s Car:
“Try to start it, Alya.” Clair watches the engine.
“Alright.” Alya turned the key and all she got was a clicking sound.
“Let me get my jump box from the truck.” Clair walks back to her truck and grabs the jump box.
Alya watches as Clair walks to the back of her truck and grabs a jump box. She hoped it was just a dead battery. If it was, she could always buy a new one and be on her way.
Clair grabs the jump box and hooks it up to the battery terminals. She double-checked the grips to make sure she had a good grip.
“Alright, try it now, Alya.” Clair stands back just in case it explodes.
Alya turns the key and the car tries to start, but it just won’t catch. She wonders what she did to the car now.
“Well, it looks like you’re going to need a professional. Do you have a mechanic you can take your car to?”
“Not really. I’ve never had a reason to take my car to anyone before.” Alya was devastated her car wouldn’t start.
“Well, I know Ada lives near Washington D.C. I think she lives in Alexandria. She could give you a ride home if need be.” Clair hopes she remembers right about Ada.
“I wonder where in Alexandria she lives? Because I live in Alexandria as well.” Alya was surprised and wondered if she had run into Ada before.
“Well, I know a local mechanic you can trust. He has never stirred me wrong about the cost of repairs.” Clair was thinking about Becky’s great-uncle.
“If he is reasonable about the cost and trustworthy. I don’t mind letting him work on my car. It will cost too much to have my car towed back to Alexandria.”
“Alright, let me call Cecil to come out and pick your car up.” Clair pulls her cell phone out and calls Cecil. She tells Cecil what they did and how the car wouldn’t catch.
Clair listens to Cecil and tries what he suggests, but nothing happens. She relays that to him.
“Alright, I’ll let her know. Bye!”
Alya had been watching Clair as she spoke to the mechanic. She wonders what he said after she watched Alya try something under the hood.
“He said he’ll be here in ten minutes. He needs to stop by the gas station to fill up.” Clair looks at Alya.
“What did he say when you told him about it not starting?” Alya was curious about what his response was.
“He thinks it might be a sensor causing your car not to start. He’s going to check that out and your alternator as well.” Clair knew Cecil knew his automotive stuff.
“I’m sorry for inconveniencing you.” Alya felt bad bothering Clair.
“It’s no bothers. When Cecil arrives take your car back to his shop. We’ll decide what to do about getting you home and back here to pick it up.”
“Thank you.” Alya smiles at Clair.
“You’re welcome.” Clair smiles back.
Cecil shows up and loads Alya’s car onto his flatbed truck. After loading and securing the car. He gets Alya’s signature to examine her car.
Afterward, Clair takes Alya back to her place. On the way back, she spots a helicopter flying over her property but moves on. When she parks, she uses an app that a friend of hers wrote that gives the location of every flight in the US. She used it to see what the helicopter was flying over her area.
“Hhhmm.” As she and Alya walk towards her house after parking.
When Alya, and Clair, arrive back at the ranch house. Clair goes looking for Jasmine. The information she got from the app she used to check the flight plan of the helicopter flying over her property didn’t look right. There was no reason for anyone to fly over the property.
Alya finds Ada in the vast library Clair had. As she entered the library, she was amazed at how many first editions and rare books it held. She noticed that Clair had a nice collection of Native American, African, Egyptian, British, Indianan, Greek, Christian, and various other cultural artifacts.
“Man, Clair should open up a museum with everything she has here.” Alya was looking at an old Native American flute. She recognized the flute as being of the Pueblo I era.
“I know what you mean. She has a unique collection of items from various countries and cultures in here.” Ada wonders if it had any relation or connection to all the items she saw down in the Den.
Ada turns around to look at Alya “So what is the verdict of your car?”
“We tried starting it, but it did not want to start. So, Clair called someone she knew and he took it to his garage to fix it.”
“Did he give you an idea of how long it will take to inform you?” Ada had a mechanic she dealt with back in Alexandria.
“He said he’ll call here when he learns why it's not working.” Alya hopes it's not something too serious.
“Well, if you need a lift home. I can give it to you. Where do you live?”
“Alexandria. I take the subway to work and use my car only when I need to.” Alya loved the subway.
“No kidding. I live in Alexandria as well. Where exactly do you live?” Ada was surprised Alya lived in the same city she did.
“Over on E. Walnut Street. Where do you live?” Alya observes Ada.
“Over on E. Spring Drive, I rent an apartment right over Snooki’s Grocery store.” Ada liked she didn’t have far to go to do her grocery shopping.
“That’s right across from The Drunken Monkey Thai restaurant.” Alya was surprised that Ada lived across from her favorite Thai restaurant.
“Yep, I have dinner over there at least twice a week.” Ada loved that place.
“Do you mind me catching a ride with you?” Alya knew Ada was close to her.
“Not at all. If you can’t find anyone to bring you back here to retrieve your car. I don’t mind helping you out.” Ada knew what it was like to depend only on yourself.
“Thanks. If you don’t mind, I would like to hang around for a little while, until I hear back from the mechanic.” Alya was getting an itchy feeling that something bad was going to happen.
She didn’t know when it would happen, but the feeling was getting stronger by the minute.
“That’s fine, there are still a few things I would like to talk to Clair about.” Ada had a few things she needed to ask Clair about.
“If you don’t mind me asking, Ada. Why are you so interested in Clair?” Alya was curious.
Ada had to think about that question before answering. She wonders how much she could trust Alya. She knew she couldn’t say everything she knew about Clair and her team.
Ada looks at Alya “How much do you know about this area?”
“Not much. I know not far from here was used by the Continental Army. Why do you ask?” Alya was curious.
“Well, this land Clair’s house sits on was once a skirmish site between a small independent unit and the British forces. It was used again by a
secret government task force back in the late 70’s and 80’s. I came across an old map and wanted to see if it was true.”
“Was it?” Alya could tell Ada was hiding something.
“Yes, but I couldn’t get access to it. The security on it was beyond anything I have ever seen.”
“Do you think Clair might know something about it?” Alya had a sneaking suspicion she might.
“I don’t know, but she was nice enough to let me explore.” Ada goes back to exploring Clair’s library.
Back at the Airfield:
Vadim lands his helicopter and makes a few calls. The people who normally dealt with life here or near Washington D.C. This wasn’t the first time he had been hired to eliminate political opponents or people.
Once the calls were placed, Vadim made arrangements to meet up with everyone. He looks over the aerial he took of the farm and the woods near it. He spots several areas where he and the people he hired could use four-wheelers to surprise the occupants inside the house.
The nearest house to the farmhouse was at least a mile or so down from the farmhouse. The property was clear. It looked like it had been cut down in the last few months.
He works out the best way to come to the farmhouse. He figures a night attack would be out of the question because of how dangerous some of the areas could be. An aerial attack and a ground attack would be smart.
Clair was informing Jasmine of a bad feeling she was getting. While she is talking with Jasmine, her cell phone starts ringing. She looks at the caller ID and notices it is Cecil.
She presses accept “Hey Cecil, what can I do for you?”
“Hi, Mrs. Williams. This is Becky. I’m calling to let you know that the car my uncle picked up from you and Mrs. Alya is going to need a new
alternator and a crankshaft position sensor. The sensor I can get locally, but the alternator I have to order and won’t be here until Monday.” Becky since her injuries was restricted to the office.
“What’s the price tag we're looking at?” Clair figures if Cecil has to order the part. It was going to be expensive.
“The cost for the whole job is five hundred dollars. The sensor is only twenty dollars. The alternator is two hundred and that’s the cheapest I can get it for. Not even the junkyard I work at has it. The rest is labor cost.”
“Go ahead and do what you need to do. I’ll cover the cost.”
“Alright. The sensor we can replace today, but we’ll have to wait on the alternator.” Becky knew they had no choice since it was coming from Virginia Beach, Va.
“Alright, I’ll let Alya know.”
Becky ends the phone call with Mrs. Williams and places the order for the part. She was slowly recovering from her injuries. Her uncle gave her a lecture about using the fuel and how she was lucky she was still alive.
Back At Clair’s Farm:
Jasmine looks at her grandmother “That was nice of you.”
“It’s only money and I have a feeling she will be a great asset as well. I want you to get in touch with Charles Morris over at the airport and ask him about a helicopter that flew over the property.” Clair noticed how the helicopter was acting.
“Grandma, helicopters fly over us all the time. Why are you concerned about this one?” Jasmine was curious. She knew her grandmother was very observant and cautious about things.
“Because something about it didn’t seem right.” Clair couldn’t put her finger on it.
“Alright, and if he gives me a hard time?” Jasmine has run up against resistance from several people her grandmother told her to talk to.
“Tell him, the Wolf wants to know.” Clair knew dropping Jack’s nickname opened a lot of doors.
There were too many people from their past that owed them. Especially, Jack and Nick. Some people owed her, but they weren’t in the field she needed right now.
“I’ll do that.” Jasmine knew using Nick’s or Jack’s name opened doors otherwise closed to her.
“I better go and inform Alya about her car.”
“I’ll go and talk to this Charles Morris person for you.” Jasmine turns and leave her grandma’s home office.
She goes upstairs to her bedroom and changes out of the clothes she was wearing and put her bulletproof bodysuit on under her clothes. It was going to cause her to feel warmer, but she would rather be safe then sorry. She also puts her motorcycle boots on as well.
Jasmine grabs the keys to her motorcycle and her helmet as she heads back downstairs. She heads out to the barn where her motorcycle was stored. She removes the cover, covering it. A smile appears on her face as she mounts her modified Vincent Black Shadow. It was one of the motorcycles her grandmother had down in the den that Jack himself rode. This one had been modified by Dave Valiant.
It was faster and more stable and could handle rough terrain like it was nothing. She had an unmodified one that had been down in the den. That one and the other one like it was used to fabricate parts for the others. She starts it up and head towards the airport control tower.
Ada and Ayla hear a motorcycle and turn to the nearest window. They move the curtain aside to see who it was. They spot the motorcycle heading down the long driveway.
“I wonder who that was?” Ada was curious, because the person was slim.
Clair heard Ada’s question when she walked into her library. She figured that Ada and Ayla would be in there, since both seemed to be the educated ones.
“That’s Jasmine. She’s running an errand for me.”
“Oh?” Ada turns when she hears Clair’s voice.
“Is there anything we can do?” Ayla looks towards Clair when she asks that question.
“No, but I did hear back from the mechanic about your car, Ayla.”
“What did they learn?” Ayla wonders why her car quit on her.
“Well, there is two things wrong with your car. Something call a crankshaft position sensor needs to be replace. They can do that today.
However, your alternator needs replacing as well and none of the local auto part stores carry it. It must be special order and won’t get here until Monday.”
“Man, I didn’t think it was that serious.” Ayla wonders how much that was going to cost her.
“My offer still stands, Ayla.” Ada didn’t mind giving Ayla a ride.
“You’re welcome to stay here until your car is ready, Ayla. That offer goes for you to, Ada.” Clair knew what Ada was after.
“Thank you. If it’s no problem, Ada. I would like to go home and get a couple of changes of clothes. Ayla looks at Ada when she asks that.
“There’s no need to drive all the way back to Alexandria, girls. There is a small shopping center not far from my place where you can pick up
whatever you need.” Clair has been to it over the years.
“I don’t need much. Just a change of clothes and a few personal items.” Ayla wanted to get out of the clothes she wore at the conference.
“Then its settle. Ada, I think it might be good for you to drive us. My pickup isn’t comfortable enough with three people in it.” Clair figures Ada might want to drive.
“No problem. Let me go and get it.” Ada never did move her car from where she parked it.
“If you go out the back door. You can save yourself some walking. There’s a path from the house that leads to the fire road you parked at.” Clair
had that road put in so the forest rangers could go into the forest behind her.
“Thanks.” Ada turns and walks out of the library.
She grabs her purse and walkout the back door. She spots the path leading towards the woods where her car was parked. She wonders what Clair was up too.
Ayla looks at Clair “you have a huge collection here. Where did you gather so many items?”
“From my journey’s. Most of it is for show and the rest I used to use for research.” Clair walks over to where Ayla was standing.
“What type of research did you do?” Ayla was curious.
“I use to help some friends of mine solve cases that normal police or agency people couldn’t solve. I love solving mysteries and figuring out things that the world has forgotten. Take this for example.” As Clair walks over to a display case and deactivate the security system on it.
She opens the case and carefully take out a smooth rock with symbols on it. She looks towards Ayla while holding it “this was found on an island out in the pacific. The island had never been charted or visited before except by a traveling group of Polynesian sailors. This all that remains of that island now.”
“Wow! What happened to the island?” Ayla was curious.
“Blown up by an ancient weapon of alien design.” Clair lays the rock back in the display case.
“You’re joking, right?” As Ayla watches Clair rearm the security system.
“Nope, I’m very serious. The people I use to work with would track down criminals and people who pose a threat to humanity. It was their job to work outside of the system and make sure the scales were balance. A lot of times, they came across mysteries and things they couldn’t figure out. That was where I specialized. You have heard of Sherlock Holmes, haven’t you?”
“Yes, but he was fictional. He was never real.” Ayla knew he was fake.
“You are right, he was fake. However, there uses to be a person whom he was based off of. That person was my ancestor, and he was rather bright for a person of his times. He helped solve several murders and crimes committed during his time. He also helped concealed things that the public wasn’t ready for yet.”
“So, are you saying that the group you mention before recruited you?” Ayla looks at Clair and wonders if she was crazy or telling the truth.
“Yes, they recruited me for my forensic expertise. I used to help them in a lot cases, that to this day can never be known.” Clair knew humanity
wasn’t ready for all the things her group dealt with or abolished because of dangerous it could become in the wrong hands.
“Did you ever publish any of the things you did or write about it?” Ayla would like to know more about Clair.
“Yes, but it is so old or out of date that it doesn’t matter anymore.” Clair walks over to a section of her library and pull a book from it that she wrote and hand it to Ayla.
Ayla accepted the book and looked at it. It had a different name on it. She looks at Clair “it has a different author named as the writer.”
“That’s my old name. When I retired, I had to change my name and features in order to protect my family.”
“Why are you telling me this?” Ayla was suspicious about Clair’s motive.
“Well, an old medicine man once told me something he once saw in a dream. At the time, I paid no mind to it. I didn’t believe in what he told me. However, there is something about you that has piqued my curiosity. There’s an energy about you, that I haven’t felt in a very long time. You don’t have to tell me your secret, but I thought you should know something about me.” Clair turns and walks out of the library.
Ayla watches Clair as she walks out of the room. She wonders how this woman has figured out the truth about her. She has done nothing to give herself away. She looks down at the book in her hands “who are you really, Clair Williams?”
Last Chance Garage:
Becky leans back in the old-style leather chair in her Great Uncle’s office. She hated that her car went out of control because of the new fuel she used. She thought she fixed her uncle’s miscalculation, but it seemed she didn’t. Now, she was going to have to rebuild her car and try to fix the fuel formula.
She looks at the workorder for Mrs. Williams friend. The alternator would be here first thing Monday morning and the sensor was on its way to the shop. She could hear her uncle and his friend out in the garage working.
She checks her emails to see if any of the parts she put online were selling. She a person that was looking for a rear axle from an old Ford F350. She brings up the list of junk vehicles they had in the yard and noticed they had four of the trucks. Two of the trucks had front end damage and the other had blown motors, but the bodies were in good shape.
She quotes them a price and send the email off. She answers a few other emails and order the parts she needed for her car. Those parts had to come from a high-performance supplier. She couldn’t use off the shelf parts any more on her car.
Becky looks at the photo her uncle kept on the desk. It was the family photo her mother sent to her uncle when she was just fifteen years old. She was so happy back then and so naive. Who would have known that things would had changed so fast for her weeks later and she would end up living with her favorite uncle.
Becky feels tears leaking from her eyes. She wipes them away with the back of her hand. The last thing she wanted to do is start crying over the events of that week. She has put those memories behind her and has moved on with her life.
She manages to get her emotions under control, before leaving the office. Her ribs were hurting her, but it was nothing to the pain she felt when her legs had been broken. The doctors had to rebuild her whole entire legs. That had been the worse pain she felt, beside what she went through.
She walks into the garage area where her uncle was taking apart the top part of an engine, so he could get to the spark plugs under everything. Sometimes car engineers should be forced to service their own creations before designing the damn things.
“Uncle Cecil and Henry, I’m going to order some lunch for us from Stocker’s. Do you want your usual or something different?”
Cecil looks over towards Becky “my normal, Becky.”
“Same here, Becky. Let me know how much it is.” Henry looks over towards Cecil’s great niece. He was glad she was doing better.
“Don’t worry about it, Henry. It’s on me.” Becky turns around and heads back into the shop to place the order.
Downtown Middleburg, Va.:
Ada, Clair, and Ayla pull into a parking spot at Bebe’s Clothing. Clair figures Alya would be able to find what she was looking for here.
“I’ve never heard about this place, Clair.” Ada was curious about it.
“It’s local. They carry a lot of designer clothes and off-the-wall clothing from unknown designers.” Clair has found a lot of good deals inside the place.
Clair leads the way inside the old-style store. It was bigger inside than it was outside.
“Welcome to Bebe’s. If you need anything, I’m here to help you.” Sarah spots the three women walking into the store.
Sarah recognized one of the women, but not the other two women with her. She finishes putting out the new panties and socks they got in. She heads up to the front of the store and waits for them.
Clair guides Ada and Alya over to where the section for young women was. She figures Alya might be interested in getting jeans or leggings.
Ada spots a nice sweater that catches her attention. She walks over to see if they have one in her size. As she is looking through the selection, she notices that prices are half of what they were in Alexandria.
“Man, I should come here to do my clothes shopping.” Ada spotted several sweaters in her size.
“Why’s that, Ada?” Alya was curious.
“Check the prices out.” Ada finds a sweater she likes.
Alya selects a pair of rough-washed blue jeans. She notices the prices on them. She couldn’t believe how cheap they were. They were name-brand jeans, but at half the price she normally paid.
“You’re right, Ada.” Alya picks out a few jeans.
She starts looking around for a dressing room. She looks towards Clair since she comes to this place a lot.
“Clair, where is the dressing room?”
“Over there.” Clair points towards the center of the section they are in.
“Thanks.” Alya starts walking over towards the dressing rooms.
Forty Minutes Away from Dulles International Airport:
While Ada, Alya, and Clair were shopping. Jasmine pulls up to Dulles International. She parks her motorcycle in a concealed area and places her helmet on it.
She makes her way towards the control tower and enters the tower. She tucks her access card back into a hidden sleeve on her outfit. She had texted Charles Morris ahead of time and informed him what she wanted. As she expected, he didn’t want to give her the information.
However, when she said that the Wolf wanted it. He changed his mind right away. Jasmine spotted Mr. Morris waiting for her when she reached the fifth emergency floor landing. She noticed he was an older man in his forties. He was dressed in dress slacks and a light blue dress shirt.
Charles Morris spots a young woman dressed in a pair of dark blue jeans and a dark blouse. He notices she is wearing a pair of boots.
“Are you Claudia?” Charles looks at the young woman.
“Yes, the Wolf sent me to retrieve some information from you.” Jasmine was using her undercover name.
Charles pulls a USB drive out of his pants pocket and hands it to her. Before he releases it “tell the Wolf that I hope this makes us even.”
“That’s between you and him. I’m just the courier.” As Claudia accepts the drive.
“Don’t you see him?” Charles watches the young woman as he releases the drive.
“What part of my statement didn’t you understand? I’m just the courier. I go where I’m told to go and drop whatever I’m supposed to pick up at a different location. I don’t meet the client, and I don’t want to. As long as my fee is paid, I don’t care who the client is.”
“Can you at least leave a message telling him I’m through?” Charles wanted to get out of the Wolf’s control.
“Whatever agreement you and the Wolf have is between you two. I think if you are really through with working for him. You should tell him
yourself. From what I heard about the client, he prefers a face-to-face meeting with his people.”
“Then you have met him?”
“No, I have never met him. However, it doesn’t mean he isn’t watching me. I’ve heard stories about him and I’ve heard what happens if you double-cross him.”
“What does he do?” Charles was curious.
“He feeds you to some sort of hellhound. Everyone that has ever challenged him or tried to kill him has ended up going missing from what I have heard. He either feeds the bodies to his hellhound or he lets the hellhound hunt you down. I don’t want to be eaten and have my remains coming out being a pile of crap.” Jasmine has heard stories from Clair about Jack and his wolf.
Charles pales when he hears about being eaten by a hellhound. He was getting tired of sneaking information to the Wolf and his associates.
Jasmine saw how pale Mr. Morris became. A smile appears on her face “If you want to get out. Let him know. He only goes after people who don’t talk to him. Have a good day, Mr. Morris.” As Jasmine turns and walks away.
Jasmine slips the thumb drive into a concealed pocket and heads down to her motorcycle. She knew Jack didn’t always handle things himself. He had other agents or companions that helped out. She also knew he preferred if you spoke to him, yourself. He wasn’t an unreasonable person.
Once Jasmine arrives at her motorcycle. She puts her helmet on and heads back to the house. She’ll look over the information while her grandmother is out shopping with Ada and Alya.
Back At Clair’s farm:
Napoleon and Chuck were sent to scout out the farm. They had parked a mile or so away from the farm and continued towards the farm on foot. Both men were dressed as hunters since it was deer hunting season.
They had been sent to scout the area out and to see what defenses they could locate that might imperil their assault on the place. As they moved through the woods at the end of the property, they didn’t find anything. They found where a car had been parked and footsteps leading to it from the property itself.
They noticed that there was a large swath of land cleared between them and the house itself. To the right of them was the highway, and to the left of them was more open farming land. It looked like the farmland had been cleared in the last few months.
They didn’t see any other houses near their location. There was a large barn for the horses they spotted. There were several fenced-in pastures with wires running on top of them. The back of the house faced towards the woods.
As they moved closer to the house, they spotted a metal carport with an old pickup truck parked under it. The driveway itself was asphalt and had a white fence that ran the length of it. The house itself looked to be from the colonial days with a wrapped-around porch. It was two stories tall and had a swing.
They spotted several fake owls posted around the place. When they went to check them out, they noticed how life-like they looked. On the porch, they spotted several hidden cameras. They avoid them without any problems. They couldn’t get over how simple the place looked.
Unknown to the two men, their presence was being recorded by the complex security system the place had. As soon as they started moving
around in the woods, the hidden surveillance cameras and motion detectors had detected them. Both their images had been captured and were undergoing facial recognition as they continued to explore the property.
In Town:
While Clair, Ada, and Alya were shopping. A ringing sound erupted from Clair’s cell phone. She pulled her cell phone out of her back pocket to check what it was. When she entered her code, she noticed the security alert from her house. The footage was of two men searching her place.
“Is everything alright, Clair?” Ada looks towards Clair.
“It seemed I have some visitors at my place.” Clair watches as the footage from the owls that surround her place shows two men looking around.
She switches to the garden gnomes that are hidden in the flower beds surrounding her place. She gets a closer look at the men and doesn’t recognize them.
“Is everything okay, Clair?” Alya spotted Clair looking at her cell phone when she exited the dressing room.
“Yes, just some hunters who seemed to have lost their way are at my house.” A smile appears on Clair’s face.
Alya tilts her head a little and examines Clair’s aura with her supernatural abilities. She couldn’t tell exactly what Clair was concerned about, but she could tell she was concerned about something. Her abilities didn’t exactly tell her everything, but they did give her a general insight about a person.
“Did everything fit?” A smile appears on Clair’s face.
"Yes. Everything fit good."
"Good. Now, let's see what else we can find." As Clair sends a text to Jasmine.
By the time Jasmine arrived back at the farm, the men were gone. She got a text message from Clare warning her. So, far the facial recognition program hasn’t found anything on them.
She parks her motorcycle back in its standard location and heads into the house through one of the secret tunnels leading from the barn. She goes upstairs to her bedroom and changes out of her work clothes. Once she takes her body suit off, she gets dressed. She fixes her hair and heads downstairs to the kitchen.
Jasmine grabs a roast from the deep freezer and puts it in the sink filled with cold water to defrost. Afterward, she steps outside to look around the house. She spots some footsteps and kneels to look at them. From the depth and size of the print, the guy had a big foot. She follows them around towards the back of the house and looks towards the woods.
Jasmine knew that there was a path cut for the game warden and forest rangers that ran behind the property. Clair and her team used to use it when they operated here at the property. There was a secret entrance back there that led to the cavern system under the property.
She turns around walks towards the house and goes inside. Since Clair and the others were out shopping. She sends Clair a text asking for them to bring back some lunch for her from Sally’s.
After doing that, Jasmine heads towards Clair’s home office and checks the security footage. She watches as the guys walk around the house, checking the place out. She didn’t recognize any of the people. She did a DMV search and within thirty minutes she had a match for both men.
Their names were Napoleon Smith and Chuck Brown. They lived near Alexandria, Virginia. Jasmine does a social security search on them and discovers that Chuck Brown worked for a waste collection company and Napoleon Smith worked for a cleaning service that had contracts with several government agencies.
They didn’t have any criminal activities on their record and were outdoorsmen. There were several pictures of them fishing, hunting, ATVing, and at a few car races. Jasmine leaned back in the leather chair behind the desk and wondered why they were here checking out her grandmother’s property.
She saves their information to the server down in the den. It may be old, but its style worked. The computer system down there needed to be upgraded. Maybe the next time Mr. Bounty comes to visit Clair, she’ll mention it to him.
Clair, Ada, and Ayla drive up the driveway and park. Ada and Ayla couldn’t believe the deals they found shopping at Bebe’s and the shoe store in town. Then they stopped at a diner called Sally’s Pub and had lunch. The food was outstanding and so was the service. Their waitress was nice and pleasant.
“Clair, that was fun.” Ada hasn’t had that much fun in a long time.
“I have to agree with Ada, Clair. That was fun and I’m coming to visit you when I need to shop.” Ayla had fun as well.
“I’m glad you ladies had fun. I know Jasmine wishes she could have joined us.” Clair walks up the steps towards the front door.
She presses her magnetic key against the doorknob opens the door and walks in. Ada and Ayla follow behind her. They could hear music coming from the kitchen and walk into the kitchen. They spot Jasmine dancing to the music playing. All three women watch as Jasmine shakes her booty and dances to the music.
“Jasmine seems to be having fun.” A smile forms on Ayla’s face.
“I’ll say.” Ada smiles as well.
Jasmine spots Clair and the others and waves to them. She noticed Clair had a carryout bag in her hands.
“Here’s the lunch you ordered, Jasmine.” As Clair hands the bag to Jasmine.
“Thanks, grandma.” Jasmine hugs Clair as she accepts the bag.
“So, did you ladies have fun shopping?” As Jasmine opens the bag and pulls out a take-out container.
“Yes. The prices were half of what they are in Alexandria. I’m coming back here to do my shopping from now on.” Ada loved saving money.
“You took them to Bebe’s didn’t you, grandma?” Jasmine looks towards Clair with a smirk on her face.
“Yes.” Clair smiles at Jasmine.
Jasmine just shakes her head back and forth. She loved that place as well.
“Is there a reason we shouldn’t have gone?” Ada looks confused.
“No, Bebe’s is a good place to shop. Since the pandemic, it has been struggling to stay open.” Jasmine knew the owner of Bebe’s had been doing everything they could to improve sales.
“Well, if it helps. We can spread the word about the place.” Ayla knew a few people who would be willing to drive the hour commute to save some money.
“That will help.” Jasmine takes a bite from her lunch.
“Come on girls, let’s get started on dinner.” Clair noticed the pot roast was defrosting in the sink.
“Okay.” Ada washes her hands in the other sink and begin peeling potatoes.
Ayla begins cutting up carrots, onions, and a few other root veggies Clair feels would do some good. Clair locates the roasting pan and starts mixing the spices she uses up. She’ll rub them into the meat once it is defrosted.
“Oh, grandma. A message came in for you while you were out. You might want to look at it.” Jasmine wanted Clair to look at the info she found out about the two men.
“Thank you.” Clair leaves the kitchen to look at the info.
Ada looks over towards Jasmine “So, did you get done with what you had to do?”
A smirk appears on Jasmine’s face “yes.”
Ayla notices the smirk and wonders what is going on between Ada and Jasmine. She didn’t believe there was a sexual attraction between the two, so there had to be something else. There was also a nagging feeling as well. She couldn’t put her finger on it.
“Jasmine, what are you studying in school?” Ayla learned Jasmine was in college.
“The criminal justice system. I’m thinking about getting my bachelor's degree in Criminal investigation or maybe Criminal psychology. I haven’t decided yet.”
“Are you planning on going into law enforcement?” Ada was curious.
“Maybe. I think our criminal justice system has some problems that need to be redone or extended. I just hate lawyers who take a razor and thinly slice the law to make it suit their purpose. Sometimes people forget are following the letter of the law or the spirit of the law.”
“You have to remember; that people are going to do whatever they can to ignore why a law was written. Or twist the wording of the law. No one wants to be held responsible for what they do anymore.” Ayla has run into people like that.
“You sound like you have some experience in that department.” Jasmine looks at Ayla when she says that.
“Not really. It’s just that history has shown that no one wants to honor their word. They always want to break it when they want something from people they promise.”
“You’re talking about the government and the promise they made to the Native Americans, aren’t you?” Ada looks at Ayla when she asks that question.
“Yes, I am. History has proven that people in power don’t always honor their or are ready to break it when it suits them.”
“I have to agree with you, Ayla. I may not be a native American, but they did get shafted like the Japanese and Germans did.”
“Mostly the Japanese,” Ada remembers reading about the intern camps.
“Now, it’s the transgender kids and the gay community, mostly the transgender people.” Jasmine knew a few people that the laws were affecting.
“There are times that the people who make these stupid laws should be made to answer for their fear-mongering.” Ada knew it wasn’t fair.
“You do know, the other side could say the same about those who support the LGBTQ community.” Ayla has heard things from some hate groups.
“I know.” Ada cuts up some more potatoes.
Ayla tosses and turn as she slept. The fox spirit that resides inside of her, was trying to wake her up. She sits up and rubs the sleep from her eyes.
“All right, I’m awake. what is it?” Ayla looks at the red and white fox spirit standing in front of her.
The fox spirit looks towards the window and back to her. It wanted her to get up and walk over to the window.
“Fine! Tracks.” As a flash appears the night clothes she was wearing disappear and her fox body suit appears on her body.
Ayla walks over to the bedroom window and opens it. She knew the alarms on the upstairs windows were disarmed. She steps out onto the roof carefully and looks around. The lights around the house lit up an area around the house, but the rest of the property was cloaked in darkness.
Ayla jumps off the roof and does a flip in the air and lands on her feet. As soon as her feet touched the ground, she felt a presence coming towards the house. A smile appears on her face as she looks in the direction the presence is coming from.
She moves quietly towards it, using the unique abilities granted to her. All the person would see is a fox that was bigger than normal coming towards them. As she gets close to the person, she spots a person dressed from head to toe in black clothing.
The person was moving carefully across the open field. The wood line was too far from the house. So, they decided to chance it and move across the back field towards the barn and house. So, far no one had spotted him.
As he is crawling towards the house. He spots a red fox coming towards him. It looked bigger than normal, but he wasn’t worried. After all the intel they did of the place and the occupants. There wasn’t anyone that had a pet fox. He watches as the fox continues towards him.
He pulls his gun out and shoot in the direction the fox. When he hit the fox, another fox appeared. By the time the fox was within twenty feet of him, there were at least thirty of them surrounding him. All of them jump towards him at once and he feels something hard hit him.
When he turns to face whatever, hit him. He spots a woman dressed like a fox standing before him. She was holding a bo-staff in her hands. He points his gun at her and fires.
The woman disappears, as he falls backward onto the ground as his feet are sweep out from under him. The air is knocked out of the intruder as the bo-staff hits his chest hard. He looks up and spots the fox dressed woman, holding him down with her bo-staff.
A smile appears on Ayla’s face as she looks down at the figure. She wonders who he was and what was he doing on Clair’s property.
“Now, why don’t you be a good boy and tell me why you are here?” Ayla presses down harder on the bo-staff.
The figure grabs the staff and tries to yank it out of the woman’s hand. He finds that the staff wouldn’t budge. He notices the smile on the woman’s face gets bigger.
Ayla watches as the figure she was pressing her staff against tries to dislodge it. She knew the staff only responded to her.
“Give it up.” Ayla presses harder on her staff.
The figure pulls a knife and tries stabbing Ayla. He is shocked when the knife is kicked out of his hand. He looks up at the woman with a shocked look on his face.
“How come people like you always pick the hard way.” Ayla puts her mouth to the side of her bo-staff and blows into it.
A cloud of dust shoots out at the base of the bo-staff and engulfs the man’s head. The man starts choking on the dust and passes out. Ayla kneels next to the man’s head and checks his pulse. She could tell he was completely out of it.
“Let’s see who you are.” As Ayla removes the mask covering the guy’s head.
She didn’t recognize the person’s face. He had short black hair and tanned skin. She exhales and figures she better become clean to Clair and the others. She picks the guy up and carry him like a sack of potatoes over her shoulder back to the house. She wasn’t looking forward to explaining what she was.
Ayla walks up to the back door of the farm house and knocks on it. With her sensitive hearing, she hears movement on the other side of the door. After a few minutes the door opens and standing on the other side was Jasmine with a gun in her hand.
“Who are you?” Jasmine looks at the young woman dressed in a fox outfit. She had an unconscious person slung over her shoulder.
“It’s me, Jasmine. I caught this person crawling towards the house.” Ayla looks Jasmine in the eyes when she spoke.
“Let Ayla in, Jasmine.” Clair moves to stand next to Jasmine.
“Yes ma’am.” Jasmine stands aside to let Ayla into the house.
Ayla walks into the house and notices Clair was standing nearby. She also notices Ada standing near Clair. Ayla looks towards Clair “I guess I have some explaining to do?”
“You think?” Ada looks at Ayla as she stood nearby.
“You can explain later, Ayla. Tell me what you know about that person on your shoulder.” Clair noticed how the person was dressed.
“I found him moving quietly behind the house in the back fields.”
“How did you know he was there?” Jasmine looks at Ayla when she asks that question.
“It’s a long story, but the spirit animal that has been part of my family for a very long time alerted me to his presence.” Ayla knew she had some explaining to do.
“Bring him to my office.” Clair hopes she can get the information from him.
Ada looks at Clair as she starts walking towards her office. She follows behind Ayla and Jasmine “shouldn’t we call the police first, Clair?”
“This is beyond the jurisdiction of the police, Ada. This person came here to kill Grandma and us.” Jasmine didn’t know if Clair could break this person.
“Still, aren’t you a little old for this type of work, Clair?” Ada figures Clair had to be in her late sixties or maybe early seventies.
“Oh, trust me, Ada. I have a few secrets up my sleeves.”
Once they were in Clair’s office. Jasmine helps Ayla secure the guy to an old-style wooden desk chair. After the two of them are sure, the person is secured. Ayla says something in Cree and her costume disappears and she reappears in her night clothes.
Jasmine saw what happened and smiled. She would love to be able to do that.
“What did you use to knock this guy out, Ayla?” Clair looks towards Ayla for an answer.
“A special dust. Just tosses some water on his face and he’ll come around.”
“Jasmine.”
“I’m on it, Grandma.” Jasmine leaves to get a cup of water.
Daniil is woken up and sputters as cold water is thrown at him slides down his face. Standing before him, was an old lady. He notices that he is tied to a strong wooden chair, sitting on a large plastic tarp.
Clair noticed that the man Ayla was awake and looking at her. A smile appears on her face. “Oh, good, you’re awake. Who are you?”
Daniil keeps his mouth shut as he looks at the old woman. He wanted to see what she was going to do to make him talk.
“Well, since you don’t want to talk to me willingly. I guess I have to resort to some nastier methods.” Clair walks over to the bookcase in her office and pulls a particular book on the shelf. She reaches into the cavity the book opens and presses a hidden button.
The bookcase swings open and behind it is a hidden lab. She walks into the lab over to a case and opens it.
“Let’s see, Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a liar by the toe. Jack told me to use this drug.” Clair picks up a purple needle filled with a blueish drug.
She turns around and walks out of the hidden lab and over to their intruder. She looks at the man “I hate to say, this is going to hurt and you might mess yourself.”
Clair leans forward towards the man and locates the main artery on his neck. She touches the vein with the needle and slips it under the skin.
“Last chance.” Clair looks at the guy.
Daniil ignores the older woman. She wasn’t scarring him.
“Okay, don’t say I didn’t warn you.” As Clair injects the drug into the man’s vein.
Outside Clair’s Office:
Ayla, Ada, and Jasmine were just outside Clair’s office door trying to hear what was going on inside. The problem was, that they couldn’t hear anything inside the room.
“I can’t believe she soundproofed the room.” Jasmine couldn’t believe Clair’s office was soundproof.
“I can. She is secretive about what she does and when you have four children. You need a place where you can have a place to retreat too.”
After thirty minutes, Clair comes walking out of her office wiping her hands. She inhales the fresh air and clears her lungs and nose of the stench from the man crapping himself. She really needs to refine that truth serum a little more. It was better than when she first created it and refined it more. However, it still caused the person they used it on to crap their pants.
Ayla was standing nearby and because of her enhanced senses, she got a whiff of the smell inside of Clair’s office. She looks at Clair “God, Clair. What did you do to the poor fellow?”
“I used a truth serum I created way back when.” She had several degrees in chemistry and biology.
“What did you find out, grandma?” Jasmine looks at Clair with a concerned look on her face.
Clair takes a deep breath before she answers “I need to call Jack to get reinforcements. While I’m doing that. I need for you and Ada if you don’t mind to clean that person up and drop him about four miles from here.”
“You didn’t kill him, did you Clair?” Ada looks at her.
“No, I didn’t. However, one of the side effects of the drug I used. It causes the person to forget the last twenty-four hours. They won’t be able to recall what happened to them during that time frame.” Clair loved that part of the drug.
“And if we drop him off away from here. No questions will be asked.” Ada could see how that would be an advantage.
“What do you need for me to do, Clair?” Ayla wanted to help.
“I hate to ask this of you, Ayla. But, could you clean the mess up in my office, please?” Clair hated to ask Ayla to do that.
“I’ll trade with you, Ayla.” Jasmine didn’t mind cleaning the office up.
“Thanks.” Ayla didn’t know if her stomach could handle it.
“After all that is done. We’ll have to arm the old perimeter defenses and prepare the house for a battle.”
“Will your house be able to stop people from breaking in?” Ada was curious.
“This house has a lot of surprises in it.” As Clair pats a nearby wall.
“Well, we better get started on our assignments.”
“I agree.” Ayla starts walking towards the stairs to head upstairs to change.
Jack’s Ranch:
Jack listens to Clair’s voice as it comes over the speaker from his cellphone. He had gotten a call from Clair early this morning and listened while she told him about the assassin that had been sent by Nickolas Kuznetsov to kill everyone inside the house.
“Do you think you ladies can hold out if an assault team is sent towards you, Clair?” Jack was already thinking about calling his sister and her team to see who was available.
He had some agents in Washington D.C., but they weren’t as trained as his sister’s team. He knew they were in New York, but it wouldn’t take them long to fly down to help Clair.
“I think we can. We’re in the process of arming the perimeter defenses and prepping weapons.” Clair knew Jasmine was arming the other ladies with weapons.
“I’ll send reinforcements to you. How soon do you think Kuznetsov’s people will attack you?” Jack hopes he has time to send reinforcements.
“Don’t know, but it’s going to be sometime today. I’m getting a bad feeling.” Clair knew something was going to happen.
Jack looks at the message he sent to Anika. A smile appeared on his face when she replied, saying she was sending Jester, Carla, Henry, and Mark. The plane he kept in New York was being prepped to leave at a moment’s notice.
“I have reinforcements on their way, Clair. It’s going to take them at least an hour to get to you.”
“Who are you sending?” Clair knew most of Jack’s agents. She did the background work on them.
“I’m sending Jester, Carla, Henry, and Mark. Mark is Hatter’s husband and Henry is a new addition to my sister’s team.” Jack was informed by
Anika that Henry was a forty-five-year-old Army veteran who found civilian life boring. He also hated what was going on currently in the country and wanted to help people.
Clair has met Jester and Mark. She knew Mark was the husband of Hatter Aylin. She wonders why Aylin wasn’t included in the group.
“Thanks, Jack.”
“You’re welcome, Clair. Remember, if push comes to shove. Uses the portable football option.” Jack will hate the fallout of the football option, but there were things at Clair’s ranch that should never see the light of day again.
“I hope it doesn’t come to that Jack. However, if it does, be prepared for what follows.” Clair knew the government would go after Jack and Nick for what was in the den.
Down in the Weapons Locker:
Ada, Jasmine, and Alya were looking at all the weapons surrounding them. Most of the weapons dated back to World War II, but also had a bunch of modern weapons as well.
Ada looks at Jasmine “Did you know Clair had these weapons?”
“Yep, Jack and Nick believed in being prepared.” Jasmine looked at the portable Gatling gun and a smile appeared on her face.
“Boy! What I wouldn’t give to be able to lift this.” Jasmine has fired it several times but had to use support to fire it. She wasn’t strong enough to carry it.
“What would you use that gun for?” Ada was surprised there were three of them in the armory.
“For taking down a lot of people and for clearing trees, I bet.” Alya saw the movie Predator and Expendables.
“Look, grandma wants you ladies to pick your weapon. It’s just a matter of time before were attack. You can stick around to help protect the place or you can leave if you feel uncomfortable taking a life.” Jasmine looked at Ada and Alya and wondered what they were going to do.
“I have my weapon, but I’ll take that compound bow and the two full quivers of arrows.” Alya grabs the bow and the quivers. She could feel how hefty the quivers were.
Jasmine looks at Ada “Which weapons do you want to use?”
Ada looks at the selection and picks a few. She grabs a few Uzis, grenades, and an M16 with a grenade launcher attached to it. She felt uneasy about all this but knew if she didn’t protect herself, she would die.
The things Clair told her that Kuznetsov’s people will do to them, didn’t sit well with her. She was going to protect Clair’s place and make sure they lived through everything. After Ada makes her selection, she looks at Jasmine “I’m good.”
Ada and Alya watch as Jasmine selects her weapons. All of them make sure they have ammo for all their weapons. They didn’t know how long the assault might last.
Once they have everything they need, Jasmine takes Ada and Alya back upstairs to the house. They noticed Clair closing a few of the windows.
“How did the conversation with Jack go, Grandma?” Jasmine knew Clair called Jack Bounty.
“He’s sending reinforcements from New York. However, they won’t be here for about an hour.”
“Man, I hope he is sending some hard hitters from everything you managed to get out of that assassin.” Jasmine has heard about some of the
agents from New York. They operated under Ankia’s command.
“Oh, two of the people coming I know. However, I don’t know the other two people coming with them.” Clair knew Mark and Jester. But she didn’t know anything about Henry and Carla.
“I wonder why Jack is sending the two you don’t know or met?” Jasmine was curious.
“That doesn’t matter right now. Let’s finish getting this place ready.” Clair didn’t want to be caught with her panties down.
All three ladies go about finishing up getting the house secure.
New York:
Jester was lying in bed with her wife and their three sons in between them. She didn’t have anything planned today and just wanted to spend time with Taskhtali and their sons. She tickles the nose of her youngest son and smiles when he starts giggling.
“I enjoy days like this.” Jester looked over towards Taskhtali when she spoke.
“Me too, sweetie.” Taskhtali was enjoying being married to Jester.
As Jester tickles her other son, her cell phone starts ringing. She groans in frustration as she reaches behind her for her cell phone. She grabs it and looks at the number to see that it is Anika’s number.
She presses accept “Hello?”
“Jester, grab your equipment and head to the airport.”
“Okay, why Anika?” Jester starts getting up and out of bed.
“We have a code 14 in Washington D.C.” Anika gave all her teammates the new coded emergencies.
“Alright, I’m on my way.” Jester ends the call.
Jester turns and looks at Taskhtali to say something, but she knows her wife hears.
“Go, just be careful.” Taskhtali heard everything with her sensitive hearing.
Jester walks over and kisses Taskhtali. She says goodbye to her sons as she leaves home. She walks out to her Bronco and drives to the airport.
While Jester is heading to the airport, several more calls go out. Carla, Henry, and Mark all get the same phone call as Jester. Carla was feeding her newborn daughter when she got the call. Henry was still asleep from a late-night job when he got the call. Mark had been helping Aylin when he got the call.
New York Airport, Private Hangar:
Jacques had been contacted by Jack and raced down to the airport to prep the plane for takeoff. As he is preparing the plane for takeoff, an old-fashioned light tan Ford Bronco pulls into the hangar. A woman with blonde hair exits from the Bronco.
A smile appears on Jacques’s face as he recognizes the woman as being Jester. After the last few months of training. Jacques knew she was going to hate how they were going to approach where they were going. He waves to Jester as he continues preparing for takeoff.
Jester saw the plane that they were taking when she pulled into the hangar. It was the same plane they used when Anika forced every member of the team to learn how to parachute and wing glide. She didn’t mind flying in planes, but jumping out of a perfectly good plane went against her better judgment. Also, it didn’t help that Aylin kicked her out of the plane, either.
As Jester is grabbing her bag, she spots Mark pulling into the hangar. There was another car following behind Mark’s Lincoln. It was a blue 69 Mustang Mach 1 Fastback. She wondered who the car belonged to.
Both cars pull up next to her car. Mark steps out of his car, after opening the trunk. The driver-side door on the Mustang opens and Henry steps out.
“Hey Henry, are you ready for some fun?” Jester knew Henry enjoyed beating the crap out of people.
“Hey Jes, how are the boys?” Henry knew Jester and her wife had children and that Mark was the father.
“They are doing fine. I hated leaving them, but when Anika calls I have to.” Jester was enjoying laying with her sons.
Sure, she bitched and gripe about carrying the triplets. But now that she has given birth to them. She hated it when she had to leave them. She loved her boys, but she also loved making criminals pay for their crimes as well.
“That’s good to hear. How’s your wife doing?” Henry has met Jester’s wife.
He couldn’t believe she came from ancient Egypt. He thought Aylin and Mark were pulling his legs when they told him about her. However, after he learned everything was true they told him. He wanted to know what life back then was like.
“She’s doing fine. She’s enjoying being a mother, something she never thought she would ever experience.” Jester knew her wife never thought she would ever be a mother.
“Is that because she decided to become a priestess?” Carla was listening as the plane taxied down the runway.
“Yeah, the mystical energies they infused into her body with the tattoos. It interferes with her natural energies in her body. Which in turn, makes it so she can’t have children.” Jester learned a lot from her wife
Mark was listening to Jester as he prepared himself for what was ahead. He looks at the area they were jumping into on his tablet. The
background information he was sent, said this ranch was the original operating headquarters for Jack’s team when he worked for the government.
The current residence on the property was one of Jack’s original teammates. She also made sure the place was guarded and looked after. The map he was looking at showed hidden entrances and perimeter defenses of the place. It also gave a rundown on some of the vehicles currently stored at the place and how to activate them.
Carla starts putting on her new custom-made armor. The new armor was designed with hidden glide wings she could deploy to glide on. It also had a specialized targeting system that her weapons could link up with. The helmet contained advanced optic systems and a filter system. If she fell into a lake or the ocean, she could survive under the surface for a limited time. It allowed her to pull oxygen from the water.
Back at the Ranch:
Ada, Jasmine, and Alya, double checks everything around the house and the perimeter. Jasmine was out on her horse checking the fence line that ran near the highway and spotted several SUVs and a van coming their way.
“We got problems coming our way.” Jasmine turns her horse around and gallop back to the barn.
She swings down from the saddle and secures the barn doors. The doors and walls of the barn were reinforced to protect the horses inside. She takes the hidden tunnel that runs from the house to the barn.
Clair looks at the monitors. She spots them coming up the highway towards her place. There were at least two SUVs and a van heading towards them.
“Alright ladies, looks like the fireworks are about to begin.” Clair looks at the time and hopes they will be able to hold out until reinforcements arrive.
The rear alarms started going off. Men in black outfits with their heads covered came from the rear of the property. Along with the men were three side-by-side ATVs armed with miniguns.
“Um, Clair, did your team have defenses capable of stopping things like those ATVs?” Ada was standing near the back door.
Clair rushes towards her office and lifts the top off her desk. She starts flicking switches to arm the hidden defensive weapons. She looks at the monitors in her office as the three ATVs are engaged.
As for the van, and SUVs coming up the driveway, three solid round silver stumps rise up out of the asphalt, blocking the way to the house. The lead SUV crashes into it. The van behind it is forced onto the ground and turns sideways, opening the side door. A minigun is aimed towards the house and starts firing.
“Crap! These guys are serious.” Alya heard the bullets hit the back of the house.
The glass in the windows was shattering from the onslaught of the bullets. The person firing at them was swiping the gun back and forth.
Jasmine aims out of an open window up in the attic and fire. She strikes the guy, firing at them in the middle of his forehead. She ducks down when a bullet hits right above her head.
“Son of a bitch!” Jasmine wanted the asshole that almost hit her.
There is the sound of an explosion in the backyard as one of the side-by-side ATVs hit a hidden landmine. The buggy gets sent high into the air as the men inside it are blown apart.
“One down, two to go.” Alya was waiting to go outside and have some fun.
The other SUV pulls onto the grass on the other side, and a man appears, firing a minigun at the house. Jasmine runs from one side of the attic to the other and grabs the rocket launcher she brought up with her. She aims the rocket launcher towards the van and fires.
The SUV she aimed for explodes from the rocket launcher hitting it. She docks just in time as the minigun fires into the opened window.
“CRAP! I’m pinned down up here, Grandma.”
Clair activates the two hidden anti-tank launchers and targets the van. She watches as the van explodes.
“All right, ladies, you can now engage them in hand-to-hand combat.” Clair watches as another ATV is sent upwards from the mines.
A smile appears on Alya’s face as she slips outside. Multiple copies of her appear as she rushes towards the mercs.
“How is she doing that?” Jasmine spots a group of multiple fox-dressed women charging towards the SUVs and Van.
Ada opens the front door slightly and tosses several smoke grenades. She sprays the area with the Uzi she was carrying. Using the smoke as cover, she rushes forward, tossing another grenade toward some men trying to flunk her.
Jasmine starts picking men off as they appear from the woods behind the house. She feels a bullet hit her right shoulder from across the room. Another bullet hits her in the middle of the back, sending her towards the floor in pain.
“I’m down.” Jasmine tries to control the tears that escape from her eyes.
Her suit may be bulletproof, but she still felt the pain from the impact. Whoever shot her hit her right in the middle of her spine. She was in pain and wondered if the impact fractured her spine.
Outside, Front Yard:
Ada fires at another person who was sent to kill them. She never thought she would be in a firefight when she joined the Department of Justice. These men were professional killers, and the only training she had was from the academy. She drops to the ground to avoid being smacked by a guy in black. She tries to roll out of the way but gets kicked in the chest.
She feels a rib break as she fires the Uzi at the guy's legs. He drops down in front of her as she fires again into his chest. She spots a couple of guys running towards her and tries firing at them. The Uzi doesn’t fire.
“FUCK!” She pulls her handgun and fires in their direction.
She hears the sound of a shotgun going off as the men charging towards her go down. She spots Clair up on the front porch, aiming at another fellow. Bullets hit the ground near here as a guy fires at her.
Outside, Backyard:
One of the men in the backyard fires at the women approaching him and his companions. The women disappear, but he gets hit in his shoulder by two arrows. He looks toward the arrows and spots a fox woman firing another arrow at him.
Alya’s ears twitch when she hears a guy running towards her from behind. She waits until the last minute before expanding her staff. She spins around with it on the balls of her feet. The staff connects with the guy’s head. She twirls the staff and brings it up between his legs.
An evil smirk appears on her face as she sweeps his legs out from under him. She does a backflip as another guy tries to strike her from behind. She used the staff to flip over him. When her feet touch the ground, she uses the staff for support, bringing both feet up and kicking him in the face. There is a crunching sound as her booted feet hit his nose.
She lands back on her feet as a bullet flies by her fox ears. She turns around and tosses a golf ball-sized ball at the guy.
“How about some color?” As the ball explodes in the guy’s face.
The guy screams as a black tar substance covers his face. He drops his weapon as he tries to get the substance off his face. Whatever the substance was, it was acidic, and burning his face and eyes.
Alya’s ears twitch, alerting her to danger as a guy on a dirt bike charges towards her. She jumps out of the way, as he zipped pass her. She watches as he turns around and comes back towards her firing a Uzi at her.
The sniper that took down Jasmine targeted the fox woman. He was just about to pull the trigger when he got hit between the eyes by a .50 caliber round. He falls out of the tree he had climbed and lands on the ground.
A smile appears on Jasmine’s face. She had managed to crawl over to the open window she got shot from and located the bastard that shot her. She noticed he was aiming for Alya.
She sighted the creep in and pulled the trigger on her sniping rifle. A smile appears on her face “Take that, you asshole.”
Outside, Out Front:
Becky was heading down the highway in the rollback tow truck near Clair's house. When she spotted a firefight going on at Clair’s place, she also spotted another black SUV coming towards her driveway. Her uncle was going to lecture her and be pissed, but she wanted to help.
She turned the tow truck around, almost tipping it over. Then, she put the truck in reverse and rammed the other SUV with the back of the tow truck, letting the rollback take the damage. She slammed the SUV so hard that the rollback sheared the front of the SUV back.
The rollback bucked as she pulled forward to free it. She went through the wooden fence towards a guy holding a rocket launcher, which he was aiming towards the front of the house. She floors it as she runs the guy over with the flatbed truck. The rocket didn’t go off, but it was underneath the rollback’s rear wheels.
One of the guys nearby turns and starts shooting at the rollback cab. Becky drops down on the seat. She removes the sawed-off shotgun from its hiding place and goes out the passenger side door. She drops down on the ground and fires the shotgun at the guy from underneath the rollback.
The Ranch:
Alya helps Ada back to the house. She took a bullet to her leg from one of the attackers. Clair was covering them with one of Jack’s custom tri-barrel shotguns. Her shoulder and arm were hurting her every time she fired it.
Becky had picked up one of the guns from the attackers and was rushing towards the house. She still had her sawed-off shotgun, but was out of ammo for it. Her lip was bloody from being suckered punch by one of the attackers. Her jaw was hurting as well.
On the way to the front porch, Becky gets hit by a bullet. One of the mercs had managed to get a shot off before Clair shot him with the shotgun.
“Let me see your wound, Becky.” Clair looks at where Becky got shot and notices it was just a flesh wound.
“How bad is it, Clair.” Becky was curious about how bad the wound was.
“It’s just a flesh wound, Becky.” Clair hears a beeping sound coming from her cell phone.
“Well, it hurts like hell.” Becky has never been shot before.
Ada looks at Becky “You think that hurts. I’m bleeding from my wounds.”
Alya was doing everything she knew to tend to Ada’s wound. It was lucky that Clair had a huge first aid kit for them to use. The house rocked from an explosion hitting it.
“What the hell was that?” Ada looked towards the front door.
“The bastards outside fired a grenade launcher at the front of the house.” Jasmine was gritting her teeth from the pain she was feeling.
“They fired a grenade launcher at the house?” Becky looks at Jasmine when she says that.
“Yeah, they are regrouping right now.” Jasmine sits down in a nearby chair.
“Is there anything here we can use, Clair?” Ada looks towards Clair for an answer.
“There’s a lot we can use down in the den. However, most of it is very dangerous.” Clair hears her cell phone beep again.
“Grandma, why is your cell phone beeping?” Jasmine wonders who was beeping Clair.
“That’s our reinforcement.” Clair walks towards her office.
Flying Overhead:
“Alright people, let’s get ready to jump.” Mark was ready to jump. He opens the cargo doors to exit the plane.
“Do we have to?” Jester felt the rushing of air as it entered the plane.
“On, come on Jester. What would your sister think of you?” Carla sulates Jester and falls out of the plane backwards.
“Come on Jes, you don’t want to miss out on the fun.” Henry follows Carla out of the airplane.
“Come on chicken little. I won’t tell your sister you are stalling.” Mark jumps out of the plane with a smirk on his face.
“Oh, hell. I’ll never live it down if my sister finds out.” Jester gets a running start towards the door. “For The Honor Of Greyskull!” Jester yells as she jumps out of the plane.
Carla spots the men firing at the house as she flies down. She had her wings extended and was gliding down. They were a new accessory for her new armor.
Carla glides down and lands. The wings fold and drop off the back of her armor. She aims her custom-made assault rifle at the men and fires at them.
Mark and Henry land at the same time. Both men bring their assault rifles to bear and fire at the other group of men. They were specialized body armor from Chaos Armory.
Jester was the last to land. She lands near a group of men behind the house. She throws down a bunch of smoke grenades and glitter bombs. Her parachute pack drops from her custom armor.
She draws her sword from her cane and starts cutting some of the men down. She didn’t like using guns unless she had to.
“Remember people, we want prisoners to interrogate.” Mark’s voice comes over everyone’s earpiece.
“Hatter isn’t here to roast some nuts.” As Jester pries an attack with her sword.
“I always feel sorry for the men she does that too.” Carla blocks an attack from one guy with her bostaff.
“Too bad she isn’t here for this one.” Henry catches a punch from a huge merc and twists his arm behind his back.
“She’s busy with her charity organization.” Mark knew the guy that has been giving Hatter a problem had all his assets stolen from him.
Mark had a sneaky suspicion that Jack might have had something to do with it. He knew how badly his wife needed the property that Mr. Puck owned. It was holding up the building of the affordable housing that was badly needed.
Mark blocks three guys trying to take him down. He extends his bo staff and uses it to trip up two of the guys while stomping down on another guy.
Inside The House:
The ladies were watching as the newcomers went to town on the last of the mercs outside. Alya and Jasmine watched as a blonde-haired
woman wearing a black top hat was using distraction and stabbing her opponents with a sword. They spot a merc aiming at the woman and her throwing something towards him.
The next thing they see is the gun exploding in his hand. There was a smirk on the woman’s face as she pivoted to stab another merc.
“What did she just do?” Alya looks at Jasmine for an explanation.
“I don’t know. She’s moving around too fast for me to see.” Jasmine wonders who this woman is.
The Front Yard:
Mark, Henry, and Carla were taking the guys down like they weren’t a challenge to them. Carla had two guys trying to take her down but ended up getting hit in between his legs by her bo staff. She had charged the end of it and sent a massive electric charge throughout his body.
As for the second person Carla was fighting. He goes down from a palm strike to his chest. Carla hit the guy dead center and stopped his heart with her attack.
Henry was fighting a guy that was twice his size and was extremely good. Henry was hard-pressed to hold his own, but he was managing. He waited for the right moment to take the guy out.
Alya, Ada, Jasmine, Becky, and Clair step out of the house as the dust settles from the reinforcements arriving. She watches as they gather up everyone. Jasmine was using Ada for support as they stood on the damaged porch.
“I can’t believe this porch is still intact.” Becky was standing near Alya.
“It’s made of titanium/steel alloy. The whole frame of the house has been reinforced with it.” Clair remembered when Jack and Nick had the
house reinforced after moving it to this spot.
“I have two guys here you can interrogate, Henry.” Jester was dragging two unconscious men from behind the house.
“I have a few over here that can be tortured as well.” Carla pulls a few men over towards everyone.
“We don’t need to torture them. I already know who is behind the attack.” Clair walks down the damaged steps. She was holding onto the handrail.
“You do?” Jester looks at the old woman. She looked to be almost eighty years old.
“Yes!”
“Why would someone want to hurt a little old lady like you?” Jester didn’t think the woman could hurt a fly.
Carla leans next to Jester “Didn’t you pay attention to the briefing Anika gave us about her?”
“Of course I paid attention. I’m not an airhead.” A smile appears on Jester’s face.
Henry shakes his head at Jester’s comment and can’t believe she just said that. He wonders why Hatter made Jester her sister.
“So, why were they sent to kill you, Clair?” Becky looks towards Clair and wonders why someone would want to kill her.
“It’s a long story, but the short of it is. I used to be part of a highly trained troubleshooting group.” Clair looks at Becky when she says that.
“You used to kill people?” Becky couldn’t believe the woman standing in front of her, used to kill people.
“No, I was the science/forensics expert in the group.”
“You mean like MacGyver?”
“Yes, like MacGyver. Each member of our team had specialties that they were good at. We did missions that saved the world from major disasters. Or our nation from being eliminated.” Clair couldn’t believe they survived some of their missions by the skin of their teeth.
“So, what are we supposed to do with these people then?” Carla looks at Clair for an answer.
“I got this covered.” Clair pulls her cell phone out and makes a call.
“Since you guys have this in hand. I’m going to go inside and sit down. My back is killing me.” Jasmine turns to go back inside the house.
“What happened?” Henry looks towards Jasmine for an explanation.
“She took a hit to her back. Luckily, the suit she is wearing protected her.” Ada looks towards the unknown male.
“Let me take a look at it. I have some paramedic training.” Henry takes his helmet off and follows Jasmine inside the house.
“It looks like you two got shot as well.” Jester spotted blood on the short girl and the younger woman.
Jester moves up to look at both women. She notices that the short woman has already had first aid applied to her wound.
“What do they call you?” Becky looks at the strangely dressed woman.
A playful smile appears on Jester’s face “I’m Jester, but you can call me Jamie.”
“I’m Becky.”
“I’m Ada.” Ada wonders why Jamie is dressed the way she is.
“One question, why are you dressed the way you are?” Ada was curious.
“To be more like my wife.” Mark had stepped up on the porch.
“Who’s your wife?” Becky was puzzled as she looked towards the guy dressed like Blade.
“The Mad Hatter.” Mark wonders if they even heard of his wife.
“Like from the Batman cartoons?” Becky was puzzled.
A smirk appears on Mark’s face. He pulls out his cell phone and brings up a picture of Hatter in her working clothes.
“No, more like this.” He shows the picture to Becky and Ada.
“She looks like the Mad Hatter from the Johnny Depp movie.” Becky has seen the movie.
“I agree.” Ada had to admit she did.
“She’s a big fan of his character.” Jester cut the bandages to look at the wound.
“Why’s that?” Ada was curious as she looked towards the man claiming to be Hatter’s husband.
“Let’s just say my wife had a hard childhood.” Mark knew Hatter had gotten better over the years.
Jester just looks at Mark, with a smirk on her face. She continues to rebandage Becy’s gunshot wound and moves on to Ada’s wound.
Carla removes her helmet and starts collecting the bad guy's weapons. She watches as the Native American-looking woman jumps down from the porch and starts helping her. She wonders who she was and how she got involved in this mess.
Carla walks over to the woman and extends her hand to her “I’m Carla.”
Alya accepts the woman’s hand “It's nice to meet you, Carla. I’m Alya.” As she shakes Carla’s hand.
“If you don’t mind me asking. What is your connection to Mrs. Williams?” As Carla picks up a rifle near her.
“Believe it or not. My car broke down and Mrs. Williams has been letting me stay with her. I had no idea she was some sort of secret agent.
What’s your connection to her?” Alya looks at Carla.
“I’m a troubleshooter for her ex-partner. His younger sister is my leader.” Carla couldn’t of a better way to examine why she and her teammates
were here.
“So, you do the same type of work as Clair once did?”
“I’m not a scientist. I’m more of a muscle type of person. I don’t think our team has a person who specializes in science.” Carla was trying to think if there was a person on Anika’s team that did science.
The only person that came close was Terry. He was the mechanic and weapon expert on their team. Herself, Hatter, Mark, and Henry were the
muscles and tactic experts. Anika was the leader and sniper in the group. Elizabeth was the doctor of the group.
A few hours later, a box truck shows up to take the prisoners away. One of the men of the truck spoke to Clair off to the side away from everyone. Afterward, he turns and leaves.
Jasmine was upstairs feeling better after Henry looked after her. As for the vehicles, several tow trucks showed up to take them away. Becky has her rollback taken to her grandfather’s shop. She was going to fix the damage done to it. She was lucky that her grandfather owned two rollbacks and a normal tow truck. Explaining to him what happened to the truck was going to take some fancy explaining.
As for the damage done to the house from all the gunfire. Nick was sending a team of trusted people to come down to fix all the damage. He said he and Jack would be coming as well to speak to everyone.
As for Anika’s team. They were going to stick around for a while to make sure the guy who came after Clair didn’t try again. They were going to set up residence in the barn. Clair had spare gear down in the den they could use.
Nick was the first to show up at Clair’s ranch. He arrived in one of the newer Lincoln Town cars, driven by a teenage woman. When she got out of the car to open the back door for Nick, she was wearing a custom-made chauffeur suit. She looked no older than a teenager.
She was shorter than Nick by at least a foot or so. Her short dirty blonde hair fell to the middle of her neck.
Clair was standing on the porch with Jasmine beside her. The other women were busy feeding their visitors. Becky had left to explain things to her uncle.
A smile appears on Nick’s face when he spots Clair and her granddaughter on the house's porch. It has been so long since he has visited her. He saw the damage done to the house. He knew the construction company he was a quiet partner in was on their way to fix the house. He starts walking towards the house.
The young woman with him stayed by the Lincoln Town Car. However, even with her sunglasses covering her eyes, she was watching Nick and everything around her like a hawk.
“God, Nick, what have you been taking?” Clair steps down off the porch to hug her old friend.
She couldn’t believe how young he looked. She knew Jack had been granted a second chance at life when she last saw him. He had explained everything to her about how it happened. Now, Nick looked like he was back in his prime again.
Nick hugs Clair. He can tell that Jasmine is watching him. Jasmine was rescued by Clair and adopted by her.
“It looks like you and your granddaughter survived.” Nick steps back to look into Clair’s eyes.
“I was lucky I had some talented people staying here with me. I was thinking about something, but before I pitch it to you and Jack. Which, when
will he be here?” Clair knew Jack was coming out.
“He’ll be here tomorrow morning. One of his grandchildren took a turn for the worst last night.”
“What happened?” Clair was curious.
“It appeared his granddaughter, Haylee, and some of her friends had been infected with a rare parasite while in Africa. This parasite is so rare that there isn’t much known about it. The medicine she was taking to remove it from her system had weakened her immunity systems so much. That she started developing problems, and it sent her system into shock.
Jack had to call back one of his daughters who specialized in alternative medicine to help her and her friends suffering from the same thing.”
“I’m sorry to hear that. I hope she is better.” Clair knew how much Jack cared about his family.
“She is and should fully recover. However, you know how much he hates being unable to do anything about a situation.” Nick knew his blood
brother hated standing back and being unable to do anything.
“Yeah, I know. There are times when being a parent and unable to protect a child sucks. It’s worse for you and Jack because you two don’t like being unable to do anything. You two are problem solvers.”
“Hey, you’re just as bad as well.” Nick knew how much Clair hated standing by and being unable to help team members when they were dying.
“Not as bad as you two.”
“So, did Anika’s team arrive?” Nick knew Anika had sent members of her team to help Clair.
“Yeah, and I have to say, I have never met such an unusual bunch. Did you know one of her team members is an exhunter?”
“That would be Carla. Jack told me all about her and how she was born. It seemed the Vatican has more secrets than it likes to share.”
“We have always known about that, Nick. Remember that one mission they sent us on had been a setup to kill us?”
“Oh, I remember. Now, why don’t we go to your office, and you tell me what happened here.”
Clair looks towards the town car and the young woman watching them. “Is your driver going just stay there?”
“Yeah, she has problems being around people she doesn’t know.” Nick knew his driver had trust issues and didn’t like being around people.
“You’ll have to tell me about it sometime.” Clair wonders what happened to the poor girl.
Clair and Nick carefully make their way up the steps. Nick was glad that he and Jack had the old house reinforced before they moved it onto the property. He smiles when he comes face-to-face with Jasmine.
“How are you doing, Jassy?” Nick had his own personal nickname for Jasmine.
“I’m doing okay, uncle. I took a .50 caliber round to my back.” Jasmine was thankful the suit stopped the sniping round.
“That had to hurt. I’m glad to see that the suit managed to stop it.”
“Me too, however. You or Uncle Jack need to redesign these suits to dull the kinetic energy a little more. I have a bruise that covers the center of my back.” Jasmine saw the huge ass bruise that completely covered the middle of her back.
“I’ll mention it to Jack. I know you're not the first to complain about the bruising you get from wearing that material.” Nick has had several himself from the lining of his clothes.
Clair escorts Nick to her office. Just before she shuts the door, Clair looks at Jasmine. “I’m going to be a while. Ensure Nick’s driver is cared for along with the others.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Jasmine wonders what the deal was with her Uncle Nick’s driver.
Out Back Behind The House:
“Is everyone okay? Do you need anything?” Ada and Alya had made breakfast for everyone. Ada had gone to the nearest grocery store to get everything she needed for breakfast.
“Sit down, Ada. You need to eat as well.” Mark looks at Ada when he says that.
“I know.” Ada sits down at the table next to Jamie and Henry.
Alya was sitting across from Carla. She noticed that Carla wasn’t eating much.
“Not hungry?”
A smirk appears on Carla’s face. “I’m not much of a breakfast person. So, how did you hook up with everyone here?” Carla was curious.
“I broke down and spotted Mrs. William’s house. She let me stay overnight, and we dropped my car off at Becky’s grandfather’s place to have it fixed. If you don’t mind me asking, why do you do this type of job?” Alya was curious about Carla.
“I’m making up for mistakes in my past. I have a question for you. How did you manage to take out several of the attackers?”
Alya looks at the blonde-haired woman. “Let’s just say my ancestors gave me a unique power.”
“You’re Native American, aren’t you?” Carla has never met a Native American before.
“Yes, and I also work at the Native American Museum in Washington, D.C. I’m one of the curators that work there.”
“Well, I have to say, I have never met a Native American before until now.” Carla drinks some of her coffee.
Jasmine comes walking out of the back door and spots everyone still eating. She grabs a biscuit and some of the slices of country ham Clair had bought and makes a sandwich.
“So, who showed up?” Ada looks towards Jasmine.
“My uncle Nick. He’s one of my grandma’s old partners.” Jasmine couldn’t believe how Nick, looked.
“Nick? Isn’t he called the Owl?” Mark looks towards Jasmine for an answer.
“Yep, where Uncle Jack is called the Devil’s Bounty Hunter or the Wolf. Uncle Nick is called the Owl.”
Why are they called that?” Henry was curious.
“Because they are extremely dangerous. Uncle Jack, Nick, and a woman called the Cheshire are three of the most dangerous assassins. Uncle Jack, because he fears nothing. He has been known to chop the heads off of the people he goes against and leave them on a pike. Uncle Nick is just as deadly as Uncle Jack, but he ruins you using the law and rules. As for the Cheshire, she has been known to use poison or to take you out herself. She is her namesake, and you never know when she will arrive.”
“So, she’s like the Disney Cheshire who appears and disappears?” Carla has heard rumors about her but has never met her.
“You could say that. She’s good at appearing and disappearing without you realizing she killed you.”
“Man, they sound dangerous.” Henry has heard stories about the wolf and the Cheshire.
“They are.” Jasmine fixes herself a cup of coffee.
During the rest of the morning, everyone gets to know each other. Mark figures that Jack and Nick might turn them into a team. He figures Ada, Alya, Clair, Jasmine, and Becky might make a good team from everything he saw when they arrived.
Ada and Alya left to go back to Alexandria. They had work on Tuesday and had to show up. Jasmine helped with the cleanup along with the others still at the farm.
Jack and Gina show up later in the day with Cadmus in tow. Nick pulls up behind them in the Lincoln Town car he arrived in on Monday. A smile appears on his face when he sees his old friend and Jack’s daughter. He didn’t recognize the wolf with them, but he knew it wasn’t Chaos.
He remembered Chaos being a lot bigger and meaner. He walks closer to his friend and Gina. He saw the wolf watching him.
“Gina, come and give your uncle a big hug.” He was surprised at how beautiful she had grown to be.
A big smile appears on Gina’s face as she walks over to Nick and hugs him. She couldn’t believe how he looked. She remembered him being older around her father’s age before he was given a second chance at life.
Nick hugs Gina and can smell her perfume. It was stronger than he remembers. He could smell that her scent had changed as well.
He looks down into her eyes “Have you become a mother again?”
“It’s a long story, uncle. But yeah, I’m carrying a baby.” Gina figures her father informed her uncle Nick.
“How many kids do you have now?”
“Five. Two teenagers, a preteen, and two babies. This one will make number six.” As Gina places her hand over her belly.
“You’ll have to send me a picture of all of them.” Nick was honored when Jack asked him to be Julia and Gina’s godfather.
Gina stepped aside so her father and Nick could shake hands with one another. She knew how close the two men were.
“It’s about time you showed up, Jack. How’s your granddaughter doing?”
“Haylee and her friends are going to make a full recovery. They’ll need to take it easy for a week or two, but they will be able to go back to what they normally do.” Jack was relieved that Haylee was better.
“Is Haylee one of your daughters, Gina?” Nick looks at Gina.
“No sir. She’s, my niece. She’s Julia’s middle daughter.”
“Speaking of Julia, how is she doing?”
“She’s doing fine. She and her wife Christmas are expecting their first baby.” Gina knew Julia and Christmas asked Uncle Sheamus to be their sperm donor so that the baby would have Bounty blood in it. They talked about asking their father, but he said it would be too creepy for him to father his grandchild.
“Are you three going to stand out there all afternoon chit-chatting?” Clair spotted Jack, one of Jack’s daughters, and Nick talking.
All three turn to look at Clair. Gina knew who she was and why she changed her name.
“We’re just catching up, Clair.” As Nick starts walking towards the porch.
Gina looks down at Cadmus “Be careful boy.”
Cadmus takes the steps carefully. He follows behind Gina and the others.
“Uncle Nick, I’m surprised you didn’t bring your owl.” Gian knew her uncle had a huge owl for a pet.
“He’s guarding the house. He’s not as trained as your wolves.” Nick hasn’t gotten around to training Samson, like his past owls.
After hugging all three people, Clair escorts them to her office and shuts the door. She motions for them to sit down as she sits behind her desk. Clair looks at Jack, Nick, and Gina.
“I’ve already sent what happened here and who is responsible to you gentlemen and ladies secure email account. Nick and I were talking yesterday about turning everyone that was here to defend the place into a team.”
“What do you know about them?” Gina wanted to know what Clair knew about them.
“Well, Ada Franklin works for the DOJ and she’s working at the archives. She could have informed her supervisors about this place but hasn’t. Instead, she came out to explore it on her own. She’s a fairly decent agent and good with a gun. The other woman Alya Fuks is a curator at the Smithson’s Native American museum and has a very unique talent.”
“Oh? What is that?” Nick was curious and he could tell Jack was too.
“She possesses the spirit of the Fox.”
“What is that?” Gina was a little confused.
“It means, sweetie that the Native American Fox spirit has chosen a host to inhabit.” Jack knew what that meant.
“So, she has a spirit living inside of her?”
“No, it means she has some sort of amulet or totem that the spirit is operating through. I’m not exactly sure how it works, but sometimes the spirits the Native Americans worship will grant the bearer of that totem or amulet their abilities.” Clair has done some research about the subject through the years.
“What has she demonstrated so far?” Jack wanted to know more.
“Well, from what I have observed so far. She can change into a fox and uses illusions to confuse her opponents.” Clair taps a few keys on the keyboard in front of her and turns her monitor around to show the images of Alya fighting.
“She’s a good fighter, but good uses some work.” Gina saw how Alya fought on the video and saw her weak points as well.
“Well, she is a museum curator, Gina. Not a fighter like you.” Clair Knew how well Gina fought.
Clair knew Jack sent Gina to be trained by the secret training center in England and she was a member of Alpha squad as well. She knew Jack didn’t want any of his children following in his footsteps. Neither did Nick either.
“Who drove that tow truck?” Nick saw the entrance of the tow truck.
“That would be Becky. She’s a little like Dave. She’s a speed demon and from what I know about her, she loves to tinker and build things. I think she would be a good fit for the team.” Clair knew it might do Becky some good.
“What does she do for a living?” Gina was curious.
“She works up at her great uncle’s garage as a mechanic and as a receptionist. She’s a good kid.”
“And of course you want Jasmine to join as well.” Jack knew how well Jasmine did.
“Yes, I think some of the assignments you have been sending her, could have used some backup.” Clair didn’t like Jasmine operating on her own without backup.
“Having a team here near Washington D.C. would be helpful, Dad. Aunt Anika is too far away to get here in time. Plus, they could act as backup for the New York team.” Gina knew it would take her aunt too long to get to Washington D.C.
“I have to agree with Gina, Jack. Plus, having two operatives that work and live near Washington D.C. helps as well, and with the way the political winds are blowing. It might be a good idea to have them here.” Clair was hoping Jack and Nick would approve.
“I might have two more recruits for you. There are rumors down in Georgia about a woman who dresses as a Mandalorian from Disney. I know there is a group of people down there that has adopted the way of the Mandalorian as a way of life, but this woman’s armor is more like Carla’s armor. I think this woman would be a good fit.”
“What is the second person you think would be a good fit?” Nick looks at Gina for an answer.
“She goes by the name of the Joker. She dresses like the Batman villain the Joker from the television series and the movies. I’m still researching her, but she has been known to help the other woman out.” Gina had one of her researchers looking into the two women.
“I wonder if she’s as crazy as the woman up in New York?” Nick has heard stories about two crazy women in New York. One dresses like Alice from the Wonderland story killing people and another that dresses like the Mad Hatter.
“If you’re referring to the Mad Hatter. Her husband is outside and she’s, my cousin.” Gina didn’t know if Nick knew.
“How about the one that looks like Alice? Is she related to you?”
“No, she is a different story. She is possessed by a vengeful spirit that wants revenge for what was done to her and others.” Jack knew about the woman.
“I’ll look into them. Anyone else you want to put on the team?” Clair wonders who else they had in mind.
Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Va.:
Brooke takes notes as the professor explains the day's lesson. She had her cellphone recording the lesson, just in case she missed something or needed to go back and listen to it again. After class was over, she walked out of the building towards the parking lot. She spots the old ambulance her ghost-hunting crew used and converted to hunt ghosts waiting for her. She walks over to it and gets in.
“So, where are we going today?” Brooke loved chasing after ghosts.
“No case today, Brooke. Today is Freddy’s birthday and we are going to celebrate it.” Jones was in a party mood.
“Sounds fun.” Brooke loved parties and she knew Freddy’s was going to be epic.
She puts her backpack in the back of their research van and fixes her makeup. She lifts her shirt off and takes her bra off while Jones drives the van.
“God, Brooke. Do you have to change while I’m driving?” Jones looks over towards Brooke’s melon-sized breasts.
“It’s nothing you haven’t seen me do a thousand times before, Jones.” As Brooke changes her bra. She adjusts the ladies as she puts on a different blouse.
She looked like the real-life version of Velma Dinkey from Scooby-Doo. Not only did she look like a real-life version of herself. But she was as intelligent as the animated character.
Once they arrived at Freddy’s place. They go inside to the party already in progress.
Clair’s Ranch:
“What are you guys going to do about Nickolas Kuznetsov?” Clair looks at Jack and Nick when she asks that question.
“The matter is being taken care of as we speak.” Jack sent one of his special agents. One that was quick and deadly.
“I’m surprised you didn’t go yourself to handle the problem.” Clair knew the old Jack would have gone to handle the problem.
“You don’t use a nuclear device to kill a fly.” Nick knew what would happen if he or Jack went.
Gina smirks when she hears Nick call her father a nuclear device. She knew her father had some killer gas when he ate certain things. God knows, he could clear a room when he cuts one.
Jack noticed the smirk on his daughter’s face. He winks at her because he knows what she is thinking. He reaches down and scratches Cadmus between his ears.
Clair noticed the interaction between Jack and his daughter and smiled. She looked towards Nick and noticed he noticed as well.
“Where do you want to send the ladies to train if I propose to them about forming a team?” Clair looks towards Jack and Nick for an answer.
“Don’t bother to ask them. They have more important things to do now.” Gina knew her father and, more likely, her Uncle Nick had other things they left either to her or to someone else.
Both men look at Gina after making that statement. “And where would you want them to go training, young lady?” Nick watches Gina’s facial reaction.
“The new training town I have established to train my agents at the Phoenix Foundation. Not only will they learn how to fight in an urban setting, but they will learn how to keep collateral damages to a minimum.”
“But they will need more than urban survival training, Gina. They will need to learn how to survive in the desert, jungle, and arctic environments. Remember your training?” Jack looks at his daughter to remind her.
“Got it covered, dad. The Phoenix Foundation has restored and upgraded some of the old towns to provide training that can simulate those environments. However, we have training centers or areas to train our agents in those environments.”
“What do you mean simulate those environments?” Clair was curious about that statement.
“The Phoenix Foundation employs people with unique abilities that can create those environments.” Gina had a few people she employed to do just that.
“That sounds like it would be fun.” Clair liked that idea.
“It is to a certain degree. The trainers I employ are specialists in their field and can make the course easy or very difficult for you.” Gina ensured everyone she employed was either a specialist in their field or had unique qualifications.
“Well, first, you must get the ladies together and ask them if they are interested. Also, I would invite that Becky lady as well. From what I saw, she handles herself in combat. She would be a good addition to your team. Maybe she can do something with some of the vehicles Dave built by either upgrading or improving on them.” Nick was thinking about all their old equipment in the Den and at the privately owned storage marine storage.
“Do you still want to keep the dangerous items in the vault here if the team becomes operational?” Clair knew they had a lot of dangerous items locked away.
“Yes, other than bringing the den up to date with new technology. There’s no reason to open the vault door at all.” Nick emphasizes the word never.
Everything behind the vault door was extremely dangerous, and I should never see the light of day again. Jack and Nick were the only two people on their team who could open it, and not even Clair could.
“So, you two are fine with me starting a team here?”
“Yes, Gina will funnel money from the special project funds to provide you with operational money. Any funds you recover on a mission, you can do what we did when we first started out.” Nick still had accounts that were used for all the operational teams.
“How much should I tell the team they will receive for each job we do?” Clair knew the team use to pay her and everyone else.
“Three thousand dollars per week per person for each mission you guys take on. As always, all your medical needs are taken care of. That includes eye, teeth, health insurance, and whatever else the person needs. If your people don’t want the stipend, it will be put into a retirement fund for them.”
“That will work. The ladies could use the money.” Clair knew she did when she joined Jack’s team.
“Are any of them hurting for money?” Gina needed to know this information.
“No, but Washington D.C. and Alexandria are expensive.”
Cave Spring, Georgia:
Deanna and Joker were facing down six people dressed in black hi-tech tactical gear. Deanna knew a new hi-tech crew was working in Georgia, and these clowns attacked one of the clans her group got together with.
“WATCH OUT!” Deanna/ Lucan fires two wrist-mounted mini darts from her wrist toward a huge guy aiming his gun toward Joker’s back.
Lucan gets hit from behind by one of the people she had been fighting. She feels the electrical discharge as it penetrates the metallic surface of her armor. The heads-up display flickers as the energy plays havoc with the electronics in her suit.
Her hud display flickers as she spins around and punches the guy in the chest. She follows up with a kick to his body, but her foot is caught and thrown backward. Deanna manages to stop herself from falling backward. She looks at the fellow she is fighting and notices it is the biggest one
in the group. He held a doubled-bladed battle-ax in his hands. The blades were crackling with blue color energy.
Deanna slides a round silver cylinder off her utility belt and press a hidden button in the middle. The cylinder expands into a six-foot-tall polearm. She twirls the polearm. “Let’s play, big boy.”
Deanna blocks a swing towards her with the polearm. She could feel this prick's strength as she stopped the double-bladed axe. She could feel
the energy coming off the ax through her staff. She twists the polearm, forcing the guy to step away from her. She spins the polearm and confuses the guy. She touches another hidden button, and a bright light is emitted from the polearm.
She sweeps the blinded guy's legs out from under him and watches as he falls. Deanna is knocked off her feet by a grenade exploding against her armor. She tries to gather her bearings as another grenade explodes against her armor. She spots the prick firing at her with a strange-
looking weapon. She brings her left arm to bear and fires the remaining mini-darts at her attacker.
The darts explode on impact, sending the person falling backward. Deanna uses the polearm to help her stand up and notices the guy she was fighting is getting up. She moves in and strikes him with her polearm.
The polearm is brushed aside as the guy raises his right arm and blocks her attack. He manages to get up with the help of his axe. He looks at the silver armor individual in front of him. He swings his axe at the person and is blocked by the polearm again. Except this time, he sends a charge from the axe through the polearm.
The hud display inside the armor flickers as another electrical charge courses throughout the armor. Deanna watches as several of her systems start turning red from damage.
“Fuck!” Deanna grabs the guy’s arm tightly and spins around with him. She sends him flying towards another one of his buddies.
Little wisps of smoke were coming from the joints of the armor. The suit’s circuitry was damaged in certain areas. Deanna could smell the brunt insulation in her armor’s helmet.
While Deanna was busy fighting one of the huge guys, Joker was having her own fun with several others. The warning Deanna had saved her life. She plucked several green balls from inside her jacket and threw them at several attackers.
An evil smile appeared on her face as the contents of the balls exploded and coated the guys in a fast-acting yellowish, snot-looking substance. The stuff was so strong that the guys who got hit by them couldn’t escape from the substance.
“God, that felt good. Man, my nose is feeling better.” Joker looks at Lucan and notices she is done fighting the two pricks that had teamed up against her.
Joker walks over towards Lucan and looks at her. Her armor had dents in it from the guy with the axe had managed to hit her. She could also smell brunt electrical insulation.
“Fired some systems, did we?” A smile appears on Joker’s face.
“What’s this we part? Do you have a mouse in your pocket?” Deanna looks at Joker.
“As a matter of fact, I do.” Joker pulls a mouse out of her jacket pocket and pet it.
Deanna shakes her head as she contacts the state police to come and pick their attackers up.
Clair’s Ranch House:
“Go ahead and contact everyone so we can see what they think. I’ll go ahead and start on the background search on each lady.” Gina had pulled out her cell phone and was making notes on it.
Nick was impressed with how Gina took charge. His oldest son, Robert could take lessons from her. He couldn’t believe how far she had come since Jack adopted her.
Cadmus looks up and starts growling. Gina looks down at her wolf and wonders what has him on alert.
“What’s wrong boy?” Gina has learned to listen to Cadmus.
Clair heard Cadmus growling and wondered what had set him off. She looks towards Gina and Jack “What has set him off?”
“I don’t know.” Jack was confused as well. He didn’t sense anything in the area with his gifts.
Just as Jack says that the air starts feeling weird in the room and he disappears. Nick sitting next to him was about to move and he disappeared as well.
“Dad!” Gina stands up as Nick disappears.
Clair stands up out of her chair as she watches as Jack and Nick vanish right before her eyes. She had felt the change in the air, as well. Now that Jack and Nick had vanished, the air had gone back to how it had been.
Cadmus stood up when Jack disappeared. He was still growling and his ears were laid back. When Nick disappeared, he jumped towards the area where Nick had been sitting knocking over the chair. He was looking around for whatever was setting him off.
Gina reaches over and touches Cadmus’s back. She has seen this type of reaction before from him. “What is it, boy?”
Clair was watching Cadmus’s reaction. She has seen Chaos do the same thing way back when Jack started bringing him on missions. She’s learned to trust the old wolf.
Gina looks toward Clair “Call Aunt Anika and inform her. Also, Dad has a tracking device inside of him.”
“I know Gina. All of us have them. We started doing that when two members of our team were kidnapped.” Clair still had her implant. It was the one thing she didn’t want taken out.
Clair taps on her desktop and tries to bring up Jack’s and Nick’s tracking devices. She watches as the computer informs her that it can’t locate them.
“The computer can’t find them.” Clair knew that was impossible. She had access to Jack’s satellite system.
Gina presses a number on her cellphone, and before long she is connected to The Phoenix Foundation.
Before the person on the other side could say anything “Nicky, use my passcode and log onto our satellite system.”
“What’s wrong, boss?” Nicky was sitting inside the cyber pod that connected her to the Phoenix computer system.
“I’m sending you my father’s frequency to his tracking device.” Gina transfers the information from her phone to Nicky.
“I’m on it, boss.” Nicky goes to work.
Just as Gina hangs up. Her phone rings again and notices it's Tizzy’s phone number. She accepts “What’s wrong, cousin?”
“Gina, mom just disappear in thin air.” Tizzy was lucky when her mother disappeared. She was holding Catlin’s and Krisha’s newest baby.
“Same thing happened here, cousin. Dad and Uncle Nick have disappeared as well.”
“What is going on?” Tizzy had stepped out into the hallway to make her call.
“I don’t know. Can you meet me in California at my business in two days?”
“Sure, send me the address.” Tizzy knew Gina had a new business, but she didn’t know what it was.
“Alright. I’ll see you in two days.” Gina ends the call.
“What are you going to be doing next I want to help.” Clair wanted to look for her friends.
“I’m going to meet up with my cousin. Her mother Cheshire has disappeared, just like Dad and Uncle Nick. Can you contact Uncle Nick’s son Robert and let him know what is going on, please?” Gina knew Robert would want to know.
“Sure. You do know I want to help. Your dad and Nick are my oldest friends.” Clair wasn’t going to sit this out.
“I know and you’ll be working with Aunt Anika at Eruption Communications. Also, I’m going to have our computer expert at Camelot to help you as well.” Gina figures Morgana and her crew will help locate her father, her uncle, and her aunt.
Clair was a little confused. She didn’t know Jack had a computer expert working for him.
“Your dad hates computer hackers.” Clair knew how Jack felt about computer hackers.
“Oh, Morgana is more than that. She owns Camelot Network Services.”
“I’ll get back to you on your team.” Gina stands up and walks outside. She was already on the phone with her older sister.
