Fate brings Christopher back to Lady Mariam whom he has long admired...
Reality means to live a fantasy...
=^_^=
When the Duchess of the Shire of Yore came to worship, she was accompanied by her daughter Lady Mariam as Krissy had hoped. Lady Mariam had a good reputation for caring about the people in need in their realm of Yore. Krissy would not regularly plead for help. But their mom is a widow, a single parent after their father, who had the job of taking care of the chalices, patens, and religious relics of the cathedral, had died two years ago.
Giving a curtsy, Krissy said, “My Lady Mariam, please help if you would. My Mama is sick and we need food that I can fix for her and my sisters.” Something moved Lady Mariam to give her more than the usual token sum. Seeing that, the girl quickly said heartily, “Thank you, my Lady.” And when Mariam heard her, she turned back to see, Krissy curtsied again, this time bowing her head profusely.
Once away from the crowd, Lady Mariam sent her assistant to track back and find out who the poor girl was. Betsy, her lady-in-waiting, caught sight of Krissy as worship ended and she sought her out.
Krissy had taken the most valuable coin and bought some food; the lesser coins bought some tea, spices, and honey.
What Krissy did not know was that Betsy talked to the woman from whom she bought the tea and spices. There she learned that the poor street girl was not a girl at all, but the son of Thomas, the former keeper of Sacred Relics. Thomas, who died two years ago.
Betsy asked, “Why does he dress as a maiden then?”
Carrie, the seller of teas and spices, replied, “With his mother ill they have fallen on hard times. Christian’s clothes soon became rags, and were too small for him. His mother, a tailor of sacred garments and a seamstress, had but an ordinary garment, a girl’s cloak. It was well-worn. Krissy jokes nowadays, ‘People are more sympathetic to a poor girl.’ Her mother has become weak and ill. All the duties fall upon Christian and his oldest sister.”
Carrie described the old dwelling where they lived. Betsy took the information back to Lady Mariam. Who was surprised and amused by the information?
Mariam and Betsy talked; Mariam told her thoughts about how Krissy reminded Mariam of images of herself, and asked Betsy about what she saw and heard as it related to the poor girl they had helped. Mariam having heard that the girl bought food, tea, honey, and spices; believed that Thomas’ widow must be very ill and the family would continue to be in trouble.
Mariam talked of her memories of Thomas at the cathedral. Her Mother, the Duchess, was quite religious and spent much time in meditation. Mariam met Thomas as she wandered in and out of the sanctuary and adjoining rooms. She even remembered young Christian when he was with his father there. “I wonder if he has the small tokens of our friendship?”
A thought came to Mariam, “Betsy, I would like you to visit their house, take some food, inquire about their health, take a blanket for the mother, and smocks for the younger girls. Then report back to me before I retire tonight.”
“Yes, my Lady.” She bowed as she backed out of the room.
Mariam and she had guessed the sizes of the younger girls. She also took a few hairs of Mariam’s to compare to Christian’s. Betsy got some ham, a small chicken, flour, small portions of salt and sugar, potatoes, and carrots. A clean pillow, and the girls’ smocks wrapped in a blanket.
A servant took Betsy by carriage to find the home of the widow Karen.
They found the widow and her family in a small rundown building with four thin walls and a poor roof. The widow had moved here after her husband had died, and their meager savings had run out. They had to move out of the housing provided for Thomas a month after Thomas had died.
Since then, others had forgotten them, and when Karen had become ill and could only work sporadically, they became part of the invisible poor. Christian’s ability to hold a job, as his clothes became worn and torn, became harder.
The widow Karen was embarrassed to receive the lady-in-waiting, and was reluctant to accept help. Kari, Kate, and little Kelly were usually shy but excited to see Betsy and what she brought. Krissy came back, bringing wood for kindling. The gifts were from Lady Mariam who knew Thomas, Karen, and their son Christopher. It was embarrassing to Krissy to be made out as being deceitful to Lady Mariam even if it were for a good cause.
Karen was in poor health, which would not usually be life-threatening, but due to their plight, illness had taken hold of Karen and was pulling her closer to death.
Betsy said she would send a servant girl to help care for Karen and the children, to the point that Karen would be healthy enough to come to the castle with Krissy to talk with Lady Mariam and Mary the Duchess of Yore. A date was set for ten days.
The topic would be about how Kris could help the duchess, and how widow Karen might be hired for tasks as a seamstress.
It was revealed that Lady Mariam was to be married to Sir Martin of Carlton; that would happen after her brother Will returned from the crusade. “We ask that Christopher remain as Kristina until after they visit the castle.” Betsy took a lock of Kristin’s hair tied in a small red ribbon.
It was made known that Kari would marry a young man named Jonathan if her mother was healthy and trained Kari properly. That would also mean a better dress, shoes, and things like her own brush, sewing supplies, and cleanliness.
His sisters looked pretty in their new smocks, but he and his mother told them to put back on their old clothes until each washed clean in that evening’s rain shower. Kristina and Kari cooked the hog meat for supper, with peas, carrots, and biscuits. They would butcher the chicken, take off its feathers, and hang it out for the coming days' meals. No meal would be very big, but even small meals would be better than what they had eaten the past year. The evening rain delighted the sisters who washed themselves and their old clothes behind their feeble cottage.
They heard the songs of evening vesper services from the church, and once again they joyfully sang the songs as best they remembered. Their mother summoned enough strength to recite a Jesus story from memory. Mother closed with a prayer, where everyone gave a reason for giving thanks.
Feelings of joy were like an old friend that returned to their house. Karen did not want to use the new blanket for sleep, but Christopher and Kari, the oldest girl, insisted. And by this time Karen was too happy as well as too tired to argue.
Come the morning Karen felt well enough to sit and stand for a few hours. She insisted that Kristina learn to sew and brush her younger two sisters’ hair. Krissy was against such nonsense until she showed some ability in both, which pleased everyone. So the week progressed. It was Thursday when Karen felt good; she was up and out walking near the house.
Betsy had come Saturday morning to check on Widow Karen. Having good food and the care of a hired girl resulted in good progress for Karen. Betsy would send someone to check again on Wednesday and solidify Karen and Kristina’s visit to the castle.
Wednesday, Karen was cleared for a visit. Karen was given three shillings and four coppers to help her family regain some status. While Karen would wear her nice dress, Kristina wore the worn smock which she had on when she first spoke to Lady Mariam.
Lady Mariam and Betsy met them in a common area close to where servants and others were introduced to the Lords of the manor. Karen and Kristina curtsied upon meeting Lady Mariam, who greeted them warmly. Mariam spoke to Kristina, “I had hoped you would have worn a ribbon or carried a trinket I had given to Christopher.
Kristina, head now bowed, said, “They were left in my hiding spot when we had to move from our home.”
Mariam joyfully said, “I am glad to hear you kept them, that is good. I had hoped they meant something as I liked that young lad and considered him a friend.”
Kristina asked, “If you liked me, why then did I need to come before you as a girl?”
Mariam said, “I did not permit you to speak, especially to question me. Widow Karen, please remind Kristina of her manners.”
Mariam said to the mother, “A room on the other side of that door, has a tub. I want you to bathe and scrub your eldest and have her change into the undergarments and the dress there. Please dry and brush out her hair. Then let Betsy know when you are ready to present her.”
Karen had taken a good look at Mariam before she took Kristina to the next room. The bathtub of water was reasonably warm. Kristina took off her clothes and stepped into the tub. It was humbling to have his mother to help bathe and treat him as a daughter. There was something for Kristina’s hair that once used made Kristina’s hair more alive. Mother said it would take more but it was a start.
Come the end of the bath, a small bottle of rosewater was used by her mother as she rinsed Krissy off as she finished being bathed. A fluffy bodice was part of Kristina getting dressed and it added to her feminine appearance. Karen informed Krissy to wear it when she was serving Mariam unless she was told otherwise.
Krissy had asked if she knew what Mariam wanted of Kristina.
“I am not sure, but as you are dressed; you have a resemblance to Lady Mariam,” she said.
Kristina spoke, “Not even Mother that would be folly.” But Karen had knocked on the door and told Betsy they were ready. Betsy told Mariam, and then another girl came in with Betsy to see Kristina. They combed her hair, using pins to make it more fashionable. They added color around her eyes and lips. They encouraged Krissy to speak and to change her voice as they directed her.
Krissy was told, “When you enter the room this time, Lady Mariam will be seated and you are to slowly approach her and then curtsey and kneel before her. If she offers you her hand, gently touch it with your hand and kiss her ring. If she is pleased, she will ask you to rise. If she asks you to prostrate yourself do so without comment.”
Kristina took in what was said to her, when her mother approached her, Kristina calmly said, “It's okay, Mother, I understand and will be obedient. Father had taught me the respect due Lady Mariam when I was much smaller.”
Betsy opened the door and announced the entry of Kristina and Karen, her mother. Kristina waited for Mariam to permit her to rise and come to her. Kristina was slow in coming to Mariam; she curtsied and bowed before Mariam.
Mariam offered her hand with the ring and Kristina kissed it as told by Betsy. Lady Mariam waited before she told Kristina she could rise and stand before her. Mariam asked, “Do you remember when you were with your Father as he worked, and the times I came there?” She said, “You said to me at least three different times that you wished you could serve me. Twice you said, you wished you could be a girl so you could serve me. I know your Father heard your devotion to serve me. He told me that your Mother knew the same. Your Father even called you a mama’s girl. I suspect that is part of the reason she allows you to be Kristina.”
Krissy turns to see her Mother, to see if that may be so. Lady Mariam addressed, "Kris, I did not ask you to turn to your mother to see if it is so. In my presence, you give your attention to me; you will learn when you can observe others.” She paused to let Kristina think.
“Would you still be willing to be a girl, Kristina, if you could serve me?” Kristina couldn’t believe what had been said or offered to her. Mariam had paused and was wanting a reply. “Kristina, would you be willing to serve me as one of my servant girls?”
Krissy so wanted to turn to her mother but knew it wouldn’t be proper to do so. The answer needed to come from Christopher/Krissy. Kristina said, “I don’t know how I could; what would you want of me?”
“Mostly you would be an ordinary servant girl doing whatever I wanted; you would clean and humbly serve me. Sometimes when it would be helpful to me, you would dress to look like me and be a decoy, for there are those wishing ill of me. It could be dangerous, but you couldn’t show fear or give away that you weren’t me.”
The idea of being her servant girl would be acceptable; the possibility of looking like Lady Mariam and serving her as such sounded exciting and something Kristina had dreamt about. Kristina spoke up, “Yes, I would do as you asked, but I am not sure I could do you justice. Would it mean that I would have a dagger to hurt those who would hurt you?
Mariam smiled a little thinking of young Christopher; the little boy wishing to protect Mariam. “Yes, but usually, you would not be free to use it to hurt anyone, less you hurt someone wrongfully. You would need to be a lady, demure, and expecting good even if someone might threaten you.”
Kristina thought of her Mother and sisters who usually saw things differently from Chris(topher). He honestly answered, “I am not sure, I could be so courageous, but I would gladly die to protect you. Being demure and not fighting back would be hard, but if that was what you wanted, I would do it.”
Mariam replied, “You answered well, with the wisdom of understanding me. I would like your Mother and you to agree that you could be that servant girl for me. Would both of you agree? Sometimes you would remain here at the manor, sometimes you would be sent home, but always from now on you would be Kristina.”
Mariam permitted Kristina to turn and visit with her mother. Krissy turned and the first thing she wanted to know. “Did you ever see me as a girl? Would it be okay to serve Lady Mariam as Kristina?”
Krissy’s Mother said, “Your Father and I both saw times when you, our eldest, acted like a daughter. You loved your Father, but you were not like him.” She paused, but then said, “This would be your decision and I would bless it either way.”
“Mother, let’s go back in and tell her yes together?” Karen stepped forward, hugged Kristina, and in they went.
Mariam said, “I need you to meet my Mother, the Duchess of Yoreshire. With that, she asked Betsy to announce her mother. The Duchess of Yore came in and both Kristina and Karen bowed low in a deep curtsy.
The Duchess of Yore light-heartedly said, “Arise Karen and Kristina is it?” She asked, “Karen, do you think you might be able to be a seamstress for royalty? I can be very demanding; I want our clothes done with great finesse.”
Karen confidently said, “I would like to see your garments and the stitches used, but yes I believe I can do most of what you’d want. The paraments for the church are quite exacting, and I even made the robes and clothing for the clergy and choir. Those men were very demanding and hard to please. I have high standards as well.”
She addressed me, “And you, young lady, are you ready and willing to serve my daughter and die for her if need be?”
Kristina said, “I know no better person or family to serve than Lady Mariam and the Lords of this manor.”
The Duchess said, “Bow before me and each of you swear your allegiance.” Upon ordering us to rise, she said, your hours and compensation will be determined in the days ahead. You will serve as Lady Mariam wishes, but remember I am the Lady who resides over the workings of the manor, thus you serve me as well.”
“Widow Karen, you may go home and care for your family. We will seek a better place for you to live, and compensate you accordingly.”
The Duchess and Lady Mariam left their company, and Karen was excused to go home. Betsy said, “Kristina, you will address me as Miss, Betsy, or yes Mam. There is a small room off the servants' stairway near Lady Mariam’s quarters. You will clean it and keep it presentable. You will be expected to be present when needed, and not heard from in your room, when not. No one must know why you have been separated from the other girls, save that I and Lady Mariam demand it. They are never to see you looking like Lady Mariam. It is not common knowledge that the well-being of the royal family has special needs of protection than they already are aware of.”
Betsy took Kristina through the kitchen, a cleaning area, and up the back servant stairs until they reached a landing with two rooms off to the right. One was a closet of bedding, towels, blankets, rags, and pillows. The clean rags reminded Betsy to ask Kristina, “I need to ask if you are used to wearing a rag down there?”
Krissy blushed scarlet as the question was sensitive enough for a regular girl, for Kristina, it was downright embarrassing. But yes, her mother taught her when dressed as Krissy she was to wear one. However, Betsy felt compelled to see for herself. While Kristina was wearing one and had it pinned; it was not as clean as it should be and the pin was in danger of slipping out.
Betsy was like a big sister, training Kristina to embrace being a woman. It would be for Krissy to let go of Christopher and embrace Kristina. It went against his male ego of seeing Christopher as the stronger one, but so be it.
Once Kristina was back together, Betsy left her to clean and organize her room, make a bed, and find a pillow and blanket. Those things were not to come from the next room, which was for Lady Mariam and guests of the manor. The royal family saw their abode as less of a castle to be protected and more of a manor to be lived in.
When Kristina went down to the servants' area, she was surprised that the other servants welcomed her and knew that she’d been put on Lady Mariam’s staff. Most were nice to her face, but others were upset and asked, “Why were you hired over one of us?”
“That was not my decision.” The answer did not please two.
But her asking where pillows and blankets were kept, was met by Sue showing her the storeroom and helping her to get a decent pillow and blanket. Sue named herself, a girl named Kelley, and an older servant by the name of Thomas as friends if she wanted them. She was welcome to come back at 2:30 for tea. It was a time unique to the servants. Sue gave Kristina a servant girl’s dress and a smock to wear over her work dress.
Kristina had set to work on her room and had much of it done by the time she broke for tea. She met both Kelley and Thomas as well as the others. Kristina waited for someone to say she wasn’t a girl, but no one did; then or in the days ahead.
She woke early, and it was still dark. Betsy told her to eat an egg and a biscuit, that she had much to learn and do. Betsy checked Kristina’s feet and hands; announcing, “The skin of your hands and feet is dry and coarse to the touch. You cannot be touching the delicate clothing nor Lady Mariam with those.” She left Kristina soaking her feet and using a perfumed lotion for her hands and fingers.
Melody, a girl of thirteen, was sent by Betsy to work on Kristina’s hands and feet. Areas that were still hard or rough after soaking, the girl attacked with a pomace stone and an oiled cloth after each treatment. She also thinned and arched Krissy’s eyebrows.
At afternoon tea, Kristina was called out by Betsy; she said, “Lady Mariam has asked you to the large room on the third floor. Hurry, do not keep her waiting…”

My Lady’s Helper
A servant girl to Lady Mariam who she adored...
Being a Lady's helper pleased something deep inside...
She woke early, and it was still dark. Betsy told her to eat an egg and a biscuit that she had much to learn and do… Melody a girl of thirteen was sent by Betsy to work on Krissy’s hands and feet... =^_^=
Krissy immediately stood and followed Betsy out of the kitchen, and once out of there she hurried to the stairs and went up the stairs as fast as she could. Once up to her room she discarded her cleaning shoes and put on a servant’s apron. The top of the apron was tied around the back of her neck, and the ties at the waist were pulled around her and tied in front. Betsy was pleased and she told her where to meet Lady Mariam. She used the service door to enter and found a smiling Mariam awaiting her.
Mariam told Krissy, “My Father, the Duke of Yore, has approved of your training Kristina to double as me when I desire or it is beneficial. Betsy’s daughter Beth has been watching you when you thought others weren’t looking. And from what she's seen, you have already been practicing and continue getting better.”
Kristina blushed at the thought Beth had watched her when she didn’t know it. Mariam noticed and said, “Don’t be embarrassed, we need you to get more practice. We need to work on our diction, how we say some words needs to change. You will also need to learn and remember how to handle yourself as Lady Mariam.” Kristina was told the next few days she would be limited to being in her room, or upstairs, where she would be learning to act as Mariam.
They started by washing her hair and using hot curling irons to get her hair styled properly. Kristina had three bodice garments designed to help cover blouses she wore and to help give her the shape of a woman’s upper torso. Kristina had been fed some special food that was having strange effects on her body. Her mother had told her the changes she spoke of were all in her head. But fitted along with the beautiful blouse and now the red bodice that went with it, she was showing cleavage similar to Mariam’s. It was the third day, dressed to look like Mariam, she went riding in an enclosed coach with the Duchess out to the countryside. The Duchess would softly instruct Mariam as she played her part. The instructions were to wave when they passed by the people and to smile. With her long skirt, it presented new problems in getting in and out of the coach. Holding her skirt and numerous petticoats humbled Krissy, as the Duchess did so much better. They stopped several times, but as Mariam, she was not permitted to speak. Once a few girls forced open her coach door and presented her with some flowers. It was only natural to thank the girls, and when she did, the Duchess and the girls were taken with how nice Mariam was to them.
Down the road the Duchess spoke up, “I expected you to faintly say, ‘Thanks’, but you spoke in phrases and spoke just as Mariam would have. How did you manage to do that?”
Kristina explained, “I did not intend to speak, but I have been practicing after I was supposed to be in bed. I am sorry, but I feel so much pressure in trying to copy your daughter.” She continued, “I wanted those girls to know Mariam would have been pleased like you and I were.”
The Duchess said, “Sometime next week; when you are back to being Kristina as a servant in the dining room; I want you to hear my praises of you spoken to Mariam. Your service to Mariam and us will earn the House of Thomas a plume in your family crest.
“I hope you don’t mind the food we have you eating that changes your silhouette and will have you looking more like Mariam. It is part of your service to the realm.”
Months had passed, and it was determined that Mariam and her father, the Duke, needed to visit the Realm of Carlton and Sir Martin as well as the Duke and Duchess of Carlton. Betsy and Beth would accompany Mariam/Kristina and Melody would be with Lady Mariam.
Mariam met with Krissy and joked that Betsy and Beth would watch her so closely that not even Dander would be able to get close to her, so she was safe from Sir Martin. Mariam presented Krissy with a jeweled dagger that fitted into the breastplate of her bodice. Krissy had been shown how sharp the dagger was and how to use it. She was under strict orders not to misuse it. Krissy did, however, become proficient in her training in using the dagger.
“A Lady should die with it not being used; than to hurt anyone who might be innocent. Krissy diligently worked hard to learn to copy Lay Mariam. Mariam, Beth, and Betsy made every effort to be together and help Krissy to learn how to act like Mariam. Mariam became even more amused as she encouraged Krissy to become more of a shy young servant. Her walking, speech, and movements became those of a typical servant who tried to please Betsy, Mariam, and the Duchess. Her ordinary ways attracted the admiration of the Duke.
It was late summer; when Kristina was called upon to step in as Lady Mariam on the Duke’s journey to meet with Duke Charles of Carlton at the Castle of Carlton Shire. There was a covenant between the two kingdoms to be ironed out and become a formal covenant between the two realms. While the Shire of Carlton was larger than Lore, Lore governed over an important Market road to London. The two regions eyed to take over Eastshire that lay between the two of them. It would provide three waterways to the North Sea. Lore was better able to secure its North Sea port. Which was important for foreign trade as well as a fishing port.
Lady Mariam wasn’t going because she planned to sneak away to London to shop for a wedding gown. She was to quietly stay with the cousins and their parents.
The morning the Duke and Krissy, as Lady Mariam, left for Carlton, the Duke decided it was safe to proceed with a small security regiment. Krissy was traveling with a chest that carried three gowns along with the one she was wearing.
Dressed as she was, Krissy had no problem smiling and waving to others as they headed away from the Castle. They would stop for the night and lodge at the estate of Sir Glee, an ardent supporter of the Duke. It would be a good challenge for Kristina.
Kristina visited with the Duke as they traveled, wanting to know of Mariam from the Duke’s point of view as her Father. She learned the Duke was not as close to Mariam as Kristina had anticipated. He did enjoy learning more about his daughter through Kristina’s eyes. It was on the second leg of their journey through Eastshire that one guard was killed and the others taken by surprise by two thieves and presumably others hiding nearby.
The lead thief had a drawn sword and entered their coach from Mariam’s side. “You, prissy wench, be a good girl and no one needs to get hurt.” He pulled Mariam by the hair to control her and he forced the Duke to step out on the other side. As he pushed the Duke one way, Mariam moved to exit the coach from her side. The thief used his strength to pull Mariam by the hair back the way he wanted.
What he didn’t anticipate was Kristina's use of her hidden dagger. She allowed herself to be wrenched back to be controlled. She grabbed her dagger and in a smooth motion pushed the tip of the dagger into the thief’s neck. Instantly, he was powerless and then dead. A young knight who noticed the thief dying, used his horse to knock the other thief off his horse. The young knight soon sought to be upon him. But the Duke had the original thief’s sword and was upon him first.
They had traveled three-quarters of the way through Eastshire by that time and decided it was safer to go forward than to turn back. The dead guard was quickly buried, and the dead thief was placed under a pile of logs and rocks. Mariam’s gown was torn and bloodied; she needed to change into another garment. With the young knight and another guard holding blankets while they faced away from Lady Mariam, she changed into a garment more suitable for travel with Beth’s help.
The remaining eighteen kilometers of the trip were uneventful except for the Duke’s gratitude and conversation with Mariam.
The Duke of Yoreshire had decided to honor Kristina, but Kristina insisted he could not. It would need to be the real Lady Mariam who needed to be acclaimed as the heroine.
Family near London might figure the truth, but they, in the name of family loyalty, would relish their secret to savor time with their niece and cousin. “Besides, I need you to be strong, as the shock and grief of this is catching up to me. I need the strong arms of Mariam’s father to hold me as I’m ready to cry.”
Richard, Duke of Yore, quickly became a loving father comforting his daughter. The evening was drawing near as they entered the grounds of Castle Carlton.
Beth, who had accompanied them as Lady Mariam’s aide, having ridden on the back of the coach along with the Duke’s servant, was able to help calm and recompose Kristina before the evening meal. The scary day would give Beth reason enough to seclude Mariam away from Sir Martin as well as the nosy Duchess of Carlton. The second gown helped to spark Krissy’s interest in the night’s dinner.
Krisstina immensely enjoyed her meal, which was meant for royalty, it was better than what she usually ate. She loved the second gown that sent shivers through her body with the sensation of silk and lace sending sheer joy coursing through her body. Martin had given her a passionate kiss just once. ‘Did her being a heroine increase his love and affection for Mariam? She was unable to determine that. But hoped Lady Mariam’s union would be the better for it.
Krissy surprisingly experienced how the touch of a man could have upon her. The Duke reminded her of her father’s warmth to Krissy’s sisters. Martin’s affection surprised her that she could enjoy the presence of a man. There were feelings of melancholy as she knew she’d never have a beau of her own.
The two Dukes agreed to the covenant of their two realms; and requested an apology for the attack upon the Duke of Yore. The captured person, like the one killed, was a hired assailant.
Sir Martin tried to lure Krissy away by asking her to tell him how she killed the assailant. Her only comment was, “Please don’t make me talk about it now.” True to what Krissy said, she hadn’t been around violence, except for the slow torture is hunger and illness upon the poor. The only option was to steal, use natural remedies, pray, and do the best one could.
Krissy was troubled by the blood and violence she had been forced into. Duke Richard of Yore was moved by Mariam; Kristina was overwhelmed by the event. Richard had profusely thanked her for saving his life, her quick thinking, and he consoled her in ways he had never done before. Beth had used cold and warm damp cloths to help soothe her nerves and regain her composure. Beth also understood that Krissy, like her, wasn’t a knight or guard who might be used to such gore. “The sad thing is,” Beth said, “You’ll neither receive the glory nor the sympathy due you. That will go to Lady Mariam, whom it is our honor to serve.”
Krisina said, “Thank you. But be guarded in expressing your sympathies and what you say. These thick walls have many ears.”
On the third day, they were there, Krissy/Mariam got to walk the castle gardens with Martin’s younger sister Lady Suzanne. They even ate together at noon in Suzanne’s living quarters. Suzanne showed Mariam a gown and invited Mariam to wear it. It fitted nicely and Suzanne said, “It is yours as my gift to you for your bravery. Fathers are so reserved in giving due affection to us daughters. My brother will be only slightly better when you are married and give birth to those who will carry our family forward. Please know how much I love you becoming part of our family.”
The Dukes had discussed commanding their armies to approach the Eastshire Castle demanding satisfaction for the attempt on the life of the Duke of Yore and Lady Mariam. Their satisfaction was to buy the western portion of Eastshire’s land for safe passage between their two kingdoms. Implied though not fully expressed was the possibility of conflict.
Two knights and ten soldiers from Yore Shire had reached Carlton in time for them to accompany the Duke of Yore and Lady Mariam home. A contingent of two Knights and the soldiers from Carlton and Yore would escort them for extra protection.
Drake, the young knight who helped them on their first journey, was put in charge with three soldiers to scout ahead on their trip back. He found the grave of the assailant empty, meaning it had been retrieved. Probably buried someplace else in an unmarked grave. The grave of their soldier was retrieved and wrapped to be buried in their homeland. The corpse and two of the scouts preceded everyone to avoid the foul conditions of a dead man from being among them.
Drake explained to the Duke what he had found and done. Then, with an additional rider resumed his place ahead of the Duke’s entourage. They made their journey through Eastshire in one day. The last day’s journey to the Yoreshire estate was one of great fanfare with Lady Mariam being seen as the Heroine she was. The woman Lora, a metal smith, had offered to make a breastplate, shield, and sword for Lady Mariam. While others had offered to do the same, Kristina said, “I would need to think about it, and you would need to come to the castle to do it.”
Krissy knew it was a decision that Lady Mariam would need to make; she expected Lady Mariam would not want to gain the image of being a soldier.
Once they were back to Yore, Kristina was hidden away in her room across from Mariam’s room. Once Mariam was back from London, she was told what happened in Westshire, and Kristina’s heroics in saving the life of Mariam’s father, the Duke.
Kristina was invited to Mariam’s room to visit with Mariam and the Duchess. Kristina told them another secret she discovered on Kristina’s trip to Carlton. “I don’t know how to say this, but my breasts appear to be growing.
The Duchess wasn’t surprised, she said, “Mariam, I’d asked old Gwendoort to work up a concoction of herbs and foods for Kristina that she might develop and grow into womanhood. That was shortly after Kristina came to act as a decoy for you. I didn’t want her to mature as a man; I thought she might as well enjoy growing into the role of being a woman. Gwendoort told me a month ago Kristina was responding to the food and herbs, but I hadn’t noticed it, except for the change of her complexion.”
Lady Mariam said, “I noticed the changes had begun before she had gone with Father, and I went to London. But I knew you wanted to remove her manhood as well, but I felt, I owed it to her to tell her about that. I hadn’t yet taken the opportunity to talk to her.”
Mariam turned, "Krissy, I am sorry you are hearing this like this, but it would be the best for you long term, though it would be humbling to your male ego as well as hurt for a while.”
Kristina giggled, “I gathered what you were doing, and I saw young piglets castrated by my uncle. They squealed and got over it, but I’m neither young nor a piglet.” Kristina said, “Gwendoort’s daughter Lace is stronger and has learned her mother’s ways. If it is to be done, she even has an oil to help the recovery. If it is to happen, I want Lace’s help. I know it is your decision, but I hope for your consideration,”
Mariam looked to her Mother, The Duchess, “I hope we are at an agreement on what is to be done.”
“We are indebted to you for helping the Duke as well as saving your own life.” The Duchess went on, “With the other done, my only concern is for you to continue to resemble Lady Mariam. We will make the room next to yours to be added to your dwelling; even scented candles will be provided. No word is to get out that it wasn’t Mariam with the Duke.”
Kristina bows to the Duchess and Lady Mariam, “I am the one indebted for the health of my mother, and my sisters. Our lives too have been saved, I am proud to serve Lady Mariam. I only hope when she marries, I will go with her.”
Lady Mariam said, “It could be so, if after you are healed, Drake the Knight could take you as his wife?”
Kristina sputtered in response, “But.. but I couldn’t give him child… nor be able to please him.”
Mariam said, “He is the one who asked for you. He is not one to frequent the taverns or pubs. You will learn the wiles of a woman, and how to please him.”
“My Lady, you dare say those things?” Mariam just smiled, “This is a private conversation with me addressing you. Yes, I expect you to love pleasing him as there is something in it for you as well.” It was Kristina who was blushing.
Kristina asked, “Am I permitted to get drunk before Lace is to have her way with me?”
Beth said, “Lace won’t mind as long as you don’t get sick, or try to fight with her.”
It was three days later that Kristina arrived back in her room after missing breakfast, and she found a mug of something to drink. She didn’t look around or seek to ask what it was for. With the first sip, she knew it was stronger than wine. Come to the third gulp, she was already feeling different. With the last sip from the mug, Beth came into her room with a deep chalice of something more to drink. And with that Beth helped Kristina to take off her clothes. Beth put clean bedcloths on her bed and Kristina was told to lie on top of them. By the time Lace stepped into her room she was feeling no pain.
Kristina didn’t understand why a silver rod was put down her penis, and she laughed when she saw the thinnest of lute strings placed around the base of her penis and sack. “Do your worst Miss Lace!” With that, Lace pulled the musical string back and forth like it was a saw until the deed was done.
Krissy gave a high-pitched shriek and was out like a candle being snuffed… When she awoke, she hazily saw Lace pour wine between her legs. She said, “Beth will stay with you tonight to make sure you do not pull out the silver rod. You have been sewn together, the inner tissue to your skin. When you need to pee, we will take out the rod and keep it out. I think you will look like most women down there. Welcome to this side, Miss. Kristina.”
Kristina soon fell asleep again and did not remember waking up until the sun rose the next morning.
It was hours later that Beth made her wake up and stay awake. Kristina had some broth and tea. After Beth told her to get dressed and walk around, she was reminded she was a servant girl. She wore a rag between her legs, a new pair of bloomers, and a dress. She was to serve Lady Mariam at dinner. She thought it would be across from her room and that Mariam was eating in her room. But she was made to walk down the stairs and was to serve her Lady in the main dining hall. Sir Martin was there, eating with Mariam’s family; Sir William, Lady Mariam’s brother, was there as well. He had arrived back from the Crusade sometime in the past two days; when she had lost her manhood.
Neither man recognized Krissy as anything but Mariam’s servant. Krissy was surprised that Sir Martin hadn’t recognized her. Martin spoke to Mariam, “I thought you said your servant has a joyful spirit and a bubbly energy. But I find her slothful and barely doing her job.”
Mariam wasn’t sure what to say; Kristina did pick up her pace and forced a smile. Duke Richard commented, “That is more like the servant we know. Someone will speak to her later; she shouldn’t need to be reminded how to serve in the great dining hall.”
The dinner lasted another two hours, and somewhere during that time, Beth replaced Kristina in serving. Kristina knew she would be disciplined for not finishing her assignment. She was sent to the kitchen to wash the pots in case someone checked if she had been excused. She had washed the pots until after the dinner, and someone’s servant was sent to check on her.
It was close to midnight when Lady Mariam summoned Kristina to her room. Dutifully she responded and made a deep bow before Mariam. Mariam said, “I do not apologize for what was asked of you, though I understand it was grueling. I can either give a welt to your back to show you were disciplined or send you scouring back to your mother. Which would you be happy to receive?”
“I am your servant and thankful to be a woman, please set two strikes against me,” Kristina said with a tone of obedience. So it was done and Kristina was sent to lie down.
Duke Richard felt a need to have Kristina checked upon in the morning to be sure he could say she had been punished. Drake and a handmaiden were sent to check on her. They found her back washing pots. The handmaiden took her aside to personally witness the whipping marks. Drake was disheartened to hear she had been punished severely enough to leave marks.
He waited many days before he dared to ask the Duke for permission to marry her. The Duke replied, “I will relieve you of your duties for three days. You should pounce upon her and make sure you want her. Know because you serve me, and her service to Mariam; your time together will be limited. You have my permission, but do not damage her so she cannot serve her.
Kristina was relegated to demeaning work that day. It was easier upon her body and allowed her to heal more.
=^_^=
Nor did she know that Mariam had permitted Drake to wait upon her in her dwelling. She was surprised when she opened the door to her humble room and found a candle giving dim light inside. Drake covered her mouth to shush any scream and identified who he was. He soon pushed her on her bed and took time to please her.
Kristina’s breasts surprised her with their sensitivity; she felt the ointment rubbed upon her opening and Drake rubbing her there. It hurt at first for a finger and then two were forced into her.
Beth had informed her about such an occasion and told her to enjoy herself. But it was humiliating and caused pain as he forced his member into her. It took three times that he pushed into her and brought himself out before she began to feel herself being pleased, and then overwhelmed with a sensation of ecstasy. She was surprised when she moved to wrap her legs around him. Drake muffled his joy, though it was reported by others that they heard some.
Between the first, the second, and the third time, they spoke to each other. Krissy learned that the Duke had permitted Drake to marry her; if he so chose. Drake learned that Lady Mariam had informed Kristina of his desire. Kristina’s answer, though no one was asking, “Yes.”
Kristina, covered by a blanket, stepped out in the dark of a morning rain to wash herself. Before returning to dress and be ready for the day. She stood outside of her little place just off of the servants’ stairway, correctly anticipating Lady Beth coming and calling her to work.
Lady Mariam was amused by Kristina's joyful expressions. She said, “One of my Father’s Knights was missing in action. Kristina, would you know of his whereabouts?”

Looking and Feeling Like a Woman
“I think he sought his bride-to-be; and awaited her return after her day was over. I believe.”
“Are you telling me, Kristina, that you already said yes, without consulting me? It is I who needs to say yes.” Krissy’s face becomes one of horror, worried that she may have overstepped her boundaries, and will it ruin what has happened. Lady Mariam in a whisper said, “You need not be worried. I joyfully will lose a servant, but will you still be my decoy if needed?” Mariam said, “You may keep your room and move between there and your mother’s place in preparation for your wedding. I have seen a few weddings of knights, and you will be delighted to be the Bride.”
“Beth go ask the Duchess to come here. And Kristina you are asked to me seated in my company that we might talk as two friends.”
Kristina never fathomed her life changing so dramatically. She sits on a small footstool, not knowing what to do.
Lady Mariam said, “Lace and Lady Gwendoort both said we would all be surprised by the feelings you have as a woman.”
Kristina asked, “How could that be? I am but a mutilated male copy?”
Lady Mariam wants to await her mother, but anxiously says, “Part of it were the herbs and food, and part was the willingness of your spirit to receive a miracle.”
The Duchess of Yore enters, seeing Kristina rising from sitting in her daughter’s presence. She assumes correctly what has happened. Kristina bows in a curtsey to the Duchess and is quickly told to sit again. Kristina knows to await the Duchess and Lady Mariam to be seated first.
The Duchess says, “I assume a knight has had his way with you, and will ask that he be able to marry you. I believe the Duke and Lady Mariam have already agreed.”
“Lace has little doubts that you will be able to conceive and child, but it is sufficient that you be able to please your husband. You will come to fear for your husband in his service as I do for the Duke and Lady Mariam will for Sir Martin of Carlton.”
Lady Mariam spoke up, “It is common for a woman in the caliber of a wedding as this comes with a dowry, yet she is poor. She does not yet know that my Father will give a dowry of unexpected fortune.”
The Duchess said, “You will either need to work or depend on Drake’s pay alone. But you could afford a fine dress when you are invited as the wife of a knight to court. You should have your mother design and make you one. You will be able to make your future husband proud of you. Your mother will be so excited to make a lovely wedding gown for you, the first of her daughters.”
That night, Kristina was home with her mother and sisters; all of whom were joyous to see her. Her sisters had known she was living as Krissy, but the Mother had only told Kari, her eldest sister, that Krissy had lost her manhood and had been living the past three months as a woman.
After supper, Kari and Krissy went for a walk to be alone so they could talk. Kari said, “We heard someone say that Gwendoort had placed a spell on you, others said she used a magic potion of herbs and foods. I cannot believe the change I see standing before me. Are you truly as happy as rumors say?”
Krissy said, “Kari, I need to confess, that I saw women as weak; I was so saddened when Papa died. I begged as a woman because it got more sympathy, garnering both food and coins. Working with Lady Mariam; I found out how wrong I was.” Krissy broke into tears and cried in Kari’s arms. Kari felt Krissy becoming like a little girl.
Kari said, “But you being taken by Mariam, helped to save our whole family. Momma is healthy and her work is again profitable. We even have a better home thanks to Lady Mariam and the Duchess.”
Kari asked, “Did Mariam get hurt when she saved her father’s life?”
Krissy took a big gulp, wanting to tell Kari the true story, but she could not, would not. Krissy said, “Lady Mariam acted so quickly and it was so dramatic that I didn’t notice.”
“Later Mariam told me, that Sir Drake wanted me, and that led to my becoming as a woman and given time to heal. Gwendoort had been giving me herbs, and food as you said, and prayed that I become a woman, but it was her daughter Lace who came to me anointing me with oil and something engulfed me.”
“I passed out as it happened.”
Kari giggled as she said, “We need to bathe around the same time, so I can see you away from our sisters. I want to see your new form.” It became lighthearted at that point and they returned home from their walk.
When it came time to sleep Krissy’s Mother Karen said to her it was now time for them to talk. She had Krissy down to wearing a thin cloth over herself so she could measure her. Karen was surprised that Krissy had budding breasts and that where she was cut looked like she was a woman there as well. Karen said, “It looks like Gwendoort had you as a patient, and that the spirit was very kind to you.”
Krissy responded, “I did not realize what was happening until the change became undeniable. Mama, I am happy as a woman, and I am so happy that you will make me a wedding gown. Please make it simple enough that you will be able to afford to do so for Kari, Kate, and Kelly”
Krissy’s Mother said, “It is because of you, Lady Mariam, and the Duchess that we are so blessed. Your gown will be fitting for a lady of Her Majesty’s Court. I think you must have done something special to garner their favor. Can you tell me what it was?”
Krissy said, “I regret, if there was, I could not say. I continue to be of service to Lady Mariam. And bound by my allegiance to her. Even if I left her service, keeping my oath to her would forbid it. I am not telling you anything new.”
=^_^=
The next day, Sir Drake came to their door and asked if he could be with Kristina. With my mother gone to work for the Duchess and a giggle in her voice, Kari said, “I will take my younger sisters and we will be gone for hours so you can have time to talk without disruption.”
Krissy was in Drake’s arms as her sisters left. Krissy was hoping to be swept off her feet by Drake. They kissed and hugged before Drake said, “I need to take you home to meet my folks. You should bundle a few clothes as I expect my mother will want you to stay the night.”
“How are we to get there? Making the trip there and back would be too much for one day,” said Krissy.
Drake said, “Lady Mariam is allowing me to use the dark chestnut mare. It is a great riding horse, but she agrees the round trip is too much for a woman or a beast of burden.”
Kristina wanted to wear another petticoat to buffer her bottom, but alas she had but one. With only a bundle of one change of clothes, Kristina was lifted upon her steed. Three hours of riding side-saddle got them halfway and a stop for food. It was an okay stopping place for knights and other male riders. It was Kristina’s bird’s eye view of where her future husband would seek a drink and rest his horse.
She sufficed herself with bread, cheese, and a small glass of wine. The woman of the place was happy to have another woman to talk with. Stephanie and Krissy felt they could become friends.
The ride from there lasted less than two hours. Marie, Drake’s French-born mother was eager to meet Kristina. She did so with a polite handshake that gave way to a huge hug and laughter. “I know the life of a knight’s wife. Do not let him wear you out; a warm bed is good solace for his hard work. You pleasing him and providing heirs will keep him from wandering.”
‘What could Krissy do? Keeping a warm bed, she could do, but providing children was not possible.’
Kristina would have to wait to meet Sir Warrington with Drake. She was whisked away by Marie, who called out for daughter Mary to meet her brother’s betrothed. They met in a large bedroom upstairs. A trunk was lifted open and Marie pulled out three dresses until she found the one she wanted. Lifting a dress in front of Kristina, she rejoiced, “This should do you well. Mary can help give you a sponge bath and dry you off. Then she can dress in this.”
That was not an option given to Krissy, and while she wouldn’t mind a change, she blushed at being helped by her future sister-in-law. Mary complimented Krissy on being so beautiful and betrothed of her brother. Mary and Krissy were quick friends. A joyful reminder that they were still young women. “How does it feel to be a would-be bride?”
Krissy said, “And to a handsome man, strong and a knight? I still lie at night and wonder how, but it is a dream come true.”
“We are a humble household; you will have my bed and I will sleep on an extra mattress,” Mary said.
Krissy responded, “I cannot put you out of your own bed. It is a big bed; I have shared as much with my sisters.”
“But that would not leave enough room if Drake should sneak in at night.”
Krissy, “He wouldn’t?”
“He is a knight, and he loves a conquest,” said Mary. “I will neither look nor listen, much.”
The supper was a better meal than usual. Kristina thanked Marie profusely, remarking on what she enjoyed, and the wildflowers that graced the table. Krissy was now in the habit of noticing much more and commenting to Marie and Mary. There was another son two years younger than Drake; he, Thomas, would become the keeper of the estate. And there were two sons yet younger.
A fire in the house kept away the coolness of the evening and burnt off some of the dampness in the air.
Marie brought in a nightgown for Kristina with some advice. Between now and your wedding night, remind Drake he needs to spill his seed upon you. It needs to be washed from there; we do not spoil your wedding.”
Seeing a surprised look on Krissy’s face, Marie spoke again, “I expected Mary to tell you, that Drake is a red-blooded knight with a heated passion for what he loves. You are the one expected to keep her head.” Mary continued, “Tomorrow the three of us will shop in Smithfield. Marie said. “It’s a nice city with shops very pleasing to us women. Do not deny me the satisfaction of spoiling you a little.”
The next morning when Marie first sees Krissy, she stares and asks if I’m okay. I wasn’t feeling great, but was surprised that she saw something that caused her to wonder about me. I ate the breakfast in front of me, and my stomach felt unsettled. I drank more water as it usually helped me to feel better.
Once in Smithfield, Marie, Ann, and Krissy enjoyed looking through several stores. They went to a friend of Marie’s for tea, cheese, and a roll. It was all she needed as she was anxious to return to shopping. One seamstress named Jennifer had become a friend of Marie’s and her family; she was excited and hoped to make a dress for Marie’s new daughter. She convinced Krissy that she needed an elegant dress but one of wool as the wife of a knight. “Someday, your emotions will have you leave home to get to your husband feeling he needs you. This dress will serve you well in travel and being received by others. You will also want a woven dress that will become special to you.”
“Kristina, Jennifer knows a dress needs to be special for you; because you are the daughter of a seamstress. And she desires to please you as well as impress your Mother.” As Jennifer measured Kristina she noticed something and said, “How much does your size change during this time of the month? I would like to fit it for regular wear.”
Marie noticed what Jennifer had, and took Kristina aside. She asked, “When did your menstruation begin?”
Kristina said, “It couldn’t have.”
Marie sniffed and said, “Don’t be embarrassed, but I can tell it has begun.”
When Kristina was emphatic that it was impossible, Marie asked her, “But you do have a cloth on, I can smell it.” With that Marie insisted that they check. There was not much blood; she had only spotted and at that point, even Krissy could smell the difference.
Lady Marie took Kristina into her confidence, “Here young lady do not be alarmed, but I have notes from your Mama and the Duchess. Gwendoort saw over more than just your physical change. They did not tell you, because they were sure you would not accept the news without experiencing the change. Welcome to womanhood. And know that the realm is pleased and hopes you will be too.”
Krissy began to run out of the shop, but Mary Ann was there and gave her a big hug. “I do not know what has happened, but you need to stop and accept what my mother says is a great blessing.” Krissy began to cry as she thought through the time from when she had left the castle and went home. This morning she felt different and bloated. There were cramps like her sister Kari had complained about. Even Kate experienced the messy coming of age just recently.
Krissy turned, and walked back to Marie, “But it cannot be?” She was now embraced by Marie and began to cry. Krissy herself was not sure if they were happy or sad tears, part of her wished it could be true, but it was so farfetched to believe.
Fear came over her, “She didn’t use black magic did she?”
Marie almost laughed, “No dear, she has a deep faith and has a gift of healing. It was her faith and your openness that brought this to pass.”
Then Kristina asked, “Why aren’t I more beautiful then?”
“Because you are but an ordinary woman. More attractive than some, but after all you have a mixture of your dad and mother in you. You have similar features to Lady Mariam, but you haven’t had all that pampering and good nourishment.”
“Let’s quit talking, and get back to my home so Drake can get you home before dark. Your mother will be delighted to see your change. She has much to talk about with you.”
Jenifer had enough measurements and Kristina’s approval of which dress to make.
Once the three women were back to where Marie and Mary Ann lived; Kristina decided she would weather the trip back home. That started early the next day, and by eleven they made it to the roadhouse where Kate lived.
Stephanie was happy to serve them the first bowls of soup that day. But she became irritated with Drake, “How dare you have your betrothed riding on a long trip today. I know a man is unable to sympathize with women as it is not in his mind to think of others.”
“Kristina, you need to speak up for yourself.” Steph hugged her. Krissy had no appetite until she tasted the soup. Kristina made her promise to give her the recipe or teach her how to make the soup. Krissy had seen how Drake loved the soup and devoured even a second bowl. Steph told the two of them that Drake would have to bring her back so she could teach Kristina.
It was mid-afternoon when they reached Krissy’s home. Her mother and Kari, Kate, and Kelly all rushed to see Krissy. Krissy was saying she regretted coming back without presents; when Drake stopped her and pulled out items he was carrying in his roll on the back of his saddle. They were hair pins and combs. Drake mentioned his father had brought them from France and it was a gift from their house to ours.
Krissy from the ride, the discomfort of her period, and being overwhelmed with emotions, began to cry joyful tears. “Mother, I am finally having my period. Do you know what that means? Why didn’t you tell me?”
Karen helped her daughter down from the horse and took her into the house. She told the others to give her time with this daughter. Karen said, “I do, this means you may be able to have children. Gwendoort and Lacy visited me while you were gone. She had asked if anything had happened and then told me it would likely happen.”
“You are not to be intimate with Drake until you are married. Gwen suggests that you gain some maturity and better learn the ways of being a woman before you get married.”
When Krissy said, “But I cannot, I want to get married as soon as possible.”
Karen said, “That is exactly why Lady Mariam will not allow it. You are still her servant, and she will force you to learn to be a lady if need be.”
There continues to be something about Lady Mariam that brings Kristina to thoughtfulness. She quickly became sober in her thinking. “Mama, Mariam has a spell on me, that brings the best out of me. Could you make soup or pudding for tonight; I do not need a meal, but something soothing and to sleep.”
Mother said, “Drink this and then go lay down on your bed. I will wake you later.” The liquor went down heating her throat as it went. Krissy had not laid down long before she was fast asleep.
When Krissy awoke her mother had a simple soup and some bread. It was good and nourishing. Then her mother had Krissy wash between her legs and use a fragrant oil on her thighs. It would combat the ugly smell for the next few days. Each day she did this until the foul smell stopped. Krissy learned that women did not stop functioning because they felt lousy. But it wasn’t until it stopped, she did not go back to Lady Mariam.
Lady Mariam was happy to see Kristina again. There was much to learn, including washing the garments that Lady Mariam had been wearing. Lady Mariam reiterated that what she, Mariam did and how she felt was confidential. Mariam explored her womanhood; saying it was best for the woman to know what pleases her. She had Kristina do much of the same, so they could learn together and hear the joy that came through the presence of a sister in spirit.
There was also more training in self-protection, or for Krissy the protection of Lady Mariam and her family. They were taught to do anything they could to be free from an attacker. Since it was unlikely to happen to them; they made a game of it and didn’t take it as seriously as they might.
Much of the time Krissy was able to go home, then again, the last decision was up to Mariam. Some nights Krissy at the insistence of Mariam slept near her bed on a blanket on the floor or in a chair. She would disappear to her former bed when Martin was staying with them.
The following month when her monthly came; Martin was there. Mariam didn’t want him but gave Krissy so Martin was not turned away dissatisfied. Such things were expected of servants to suffer in quiet. Krissy was even to clean Martin so that he did not have a foul smell.
Fortunately, Martin found an excuse to go back to his family. Krissy was saved from a disgusting time.
A few days later, Mariam and Kristina have both gone to the Cathedral of Yore, but for different reasons. It is a place that holds warm memories for both of us. Mariam takes in both the beauty of the Cathedral and her faith that has the memories of a child as well as a maturing faith that she cultivated there.
Kristina was there to see the priest about what she needed to do to get married there. He had the needed baptismal records for her old self; he was leery of officiating a wedding for a woman without proof of her baptism.
Mariam was upfront in the sanctuary but she sees me as she is about to leave. It is Lady Mariam consoling me that things will be all right, “Monsignor Paul Hart will make it work. Do not worry yourself.” She affectionately kisses Kristina on the forehead. The young boy is now a woman serving Lady Mariam; wishes do come true sometimes.

Danger, Escape, a Lady
Months later, Lady Mariam decided to see her cousin Anne in Manchester. It was to be a casual visit, without the usual fanfare. Nothing had been announced. They would use what appeared to be a normal coach and drive accompanied by two men riding as escorts on horseback. They were well over an hour into their trip as they made a turn on a wooded trail. Their coach was soon attacked by a band of road bandits appearing from nowhere. There were at least six of them that chased off the escorts and threw the driver to the ground. Most of Mariam’s jewelry and fine clothes were hidden away and safe. The robbers took what they easily found and took delight in harassing Lady Mariam; one thief, alias Robin, considered it a joke to hold Mariam for ransom. Their daggers nestled in the breastplate were taken from their not-so-hidden hiding places. Robin held on to one of Mariam’s hands as he held a knife to her. It was then that Kristina used her hair needle pressing it slowly into Robin’s chest, hoping to pierce his heart.
She had the foresight to know she needed to regain possession of the coach and drive it to safety.
She took a simple knife with a curved blade hidden under the cushion. She then put it to Robin’s neck. “You are found ill-prepared to deal with women. If you want to live, you’ll be quiet except to permit me to replace the driver. Tell the others to be at ease. Your life is now in the hands of Lady Mariam; lest she pushes this knife into your neck or the needle more in your chest puncturing your heart.”
Mariam quickly assumed her role of holding him quiet and captive.
Kristina stepped out of the coach and took two steps up to the driver’s seat. She was next to the robber who had pushed off the driver. She looked to the ground to see the bleeding body of the driver lying on the ground. She was forceful as she took the reins, shook them to start the horses, and then pushed the thief off to the ground. With a harder shake of the reins, the horses were off at a fast gallop. They raced through an outcropping of several houses and a distance after to a crossroad that Kristiuna recognized with the help of her memory that she was nearing a crossroad that led to her uncle, Sir Warren. Warren’s mother and her father’s mother were twin sisters who had married the cousins. Thomas’ family had a long lineage of serving the church. Sir Warren’s family were workers who had become very gifted at their craft working with metals. They lived south and east of Sheffield. Kristina knew they would be safe there. Sir Warren’s family had built their estate connecting multiple farms as one.
Kristina turned at the crossroad and went a few kilometers before she stopped and checked with Lady Mariam.
Lady Mariam was pleased that they had escaped but stated it might have been safer to wait and be ransomed. Kristina responded, “Your Lady, that Randy up in the driver’s seat said they considered offering you to those who were interested in your being harmed.”
Hearing that she checked with Robin, who was now badly off, possibly dying. It was a while before Kristina had seen the house of Sir Warren’s estate to the south and east. She told Mariam that a good portion of the land between them and the house, belonged to her Uncle and Lady Alice. Field workers let out yells and whistles that drew the attention of a horse rider, her Cousin William.
William soon realized the plight of Kristina and her riders and took over driving the coach to the estate, right up to the main house. Lady Alice had the servants along with a guard take the robber into their care and responsibility. Kristina was near emotional and physical exhaustion, explained that the would-be robber was of value.
A nurse who served the estate, seeing water come from where the hair needle was drawn, said, “You pierced the protective sack around the heart. He is not in immediate danger. You did well to scare him and take control of your situation. Lady Mariam is well, but like you, near exhaustion. You both need to stay here, rest and be in Sir Warren’s safe shelter.”
Lady Alice came in to see them and asked Kristina to stand, “Well young woman I can see your new role in life suits you.” Having taken a good look at Kristina, she hugged her. “And I hear your mother has come out of her melancholy and ill health and is doing well. How do you like wearing finer clothing?”
It became apparent that both Lady Mariam and Kristina needed some nourishment as well as rest. They were served a broth with some vegetables and rolls, and simmering cups of tea. During their eating, they told of their horrific ordeal.
A rescue party of six was sent to where they were first attacked. It would be a while before they could get there and back.
Sir Warren and his son William were here. They had a quick meeting with the man taken into their custody, and their quick conclusion was that they were to abduct Lady Mariam. Sir Warren looked amused seeing his old nephew now as a young woman. “The spunk of the former nephew probably saved you and the compassion of a woman saved your would-be abductor.”
Mariam spoke up, “The courage and skill of Kristina was developed under my tutelage. We are both strong women.”
Lady Alice spoke up, “I guess you stand corrected husband of mine… Lady Mariam, if you wouldn’t mind, I have asked a second bed to be taken into the guest room. It is my experience that both of you will feel more secure with the other in the room. However, if that is not suitable; I will change it.”
Mariam replied, “No, I agree with your thinking, and Kristina and I have become fairly close. I think we’ll be a comfort for one another.”
Kristina wondered because Mariam and her Aunt Lady Elizabeth were talking as though she wasn’t in the room nor had her thoughts considered. She bit her tongue and would be quiet for now.
There came down from the stairway two young women; one could be near the age of Kristina, but the shorter one seemed to be years younger. Catherine and Constance had been upstairs and unaware of anyone’s arrival.
Constance, seeing the clothes of the strange women were torn and dirty, asked, “Mama, why are you talking to them; what are their needs?”
Their mother turned and curtly said, “Can’t you see that they’ve been hurt and came here for refuge? This is Lady Mariam from Yoreshire and this is your Cousin Kristina. Kristina serves Lady Mariam.”
One could see thoughts turning in the heads of Catherine and Constance.
Kristina spoke up, “I am the older sister of Kari, Kate, and Kelly Thomas, I am the one you never met.” How do you explain I was Christian, who became Kristina? Magic or miracles are for make-believe stories.
Catherine walked over to Kristina, hugged her, and whispered, “You have a strange resemblance to my cousin Christian,” When she pulled back from Kristina, they had acknowledging smiles.
Catherine was wearing a perfume with the subtle fragrance of a wild flower. Kristina breathed in the fragrance and realized Catherine was expecting the arrival of a young man.
Catherine asked, “Is Luke still welcome to come here and have dinner with us?”
Alice said, “Yes, that will be. First I’d like you to escort Lady Mariam and Kristina to the guest room so they can clean up and change clothes.”
Four men brought in the trunks of the two women, and followed Catherine upstairs to the larger guest room. Catherine was intrigued with the women and began talking with them. There were partitions that Mariam and Kristina used for changing out of their clothes. They each put on a dressing robe and found themselves telling their story to Catherine. They were like three women sharing stories.
Mariam was the one who changed the conversation and asked, “Catherine, who is this Luke who is coming to see you?”
Catherine stumbled over her words and finally said, “He is the young man I am in love with. I think he is coming over to ask my Father’s permission to marry me?”
That night when Kristina and Lady Mariam were alone, though exhausted, Kristina asked, “Do you seriously consider being a confidant?”
Mariam squeezed out a giggle, “Yes, most definitely. Mother and I closely watched you for months, to make sure you were trustworthy. Mother told me having a person like you would be good for me, and I find you very good. Today was another example. You are both my trusted servant and my dear friend.”
Kristina asked, “Why can’t I be a loyal and trusted subject and a friend?”
“I guess that could be arranged, but my mother pays my servants and half of your money has gone to your family. I will need to talk to my mother and father.”
“I have been compensated very well, how can that be only half of my compensation?” Kristina was bewildered, “Your mother gave me some money before we left, and told me to remember my family when in Manchester.”
Mariam said, “That was my Mama’s gift to you and encouragement to remember your mother and sisters. There may be things you do not regularly see in Yoreshire. They could also be more expensive.”
“I wonder if your uncle will help us to get to my cousins, the Duke and Duchess of Manchester. I know your uncle would be well rewarded for doing so. Plus, I am to be in Lady Anne’s wedding ceremony. Remember, she and I are to be looking at possible wedding gowns.”
Lady Mariam was still talking when she found Kristina to be asleep.
Mariam and Kristna were slightly late in waking up, but the mansion and farm were already buzzing with work. William and his men were back from where we were held up. The coach driver and one guard were found dead on the ground. Another guard had been taken in by a family and may or may not survive his injuries.
Lord Warren asked, “Lady Alice tells me your relatives of The Duke and Duchess of Manchester will be expecting you today; if they had not expected you as early as last night.”
William and I will take you there, beginning in three hours, as long as our nurse thinks you are well enough. We will have our driver and six more men to go with us. We will travel our road west through Sheffield, and then another thirty kilometers west onto Manchester. I expect the Duke of Sheffield of whom I am a subject will send some men with us as well. I do not expect to be attacked, but if we are, my men and I will defeat them. I will not rest on protocol or due process. We not only make the best steel and swords; I have developed what I call a cross of a bow and our mechanism that shoots them like deadly darts. It begs to be tested in action.”
Kristina asked, "Lady Mariam, since you will be safe; do you want me to stay here and wait until you are ready to return?”
Lord Warren intervened, “There will be no staying behind the royals at Manchester will be wanting to meet you as well as to see Lady Mariam of Yoreshire. The Grand Duke will want to hear the full story. Lady Mariam and you will be feasted for your valor.
They set out and made it to Sheffield late in the morning. A herald was sent out to tell Lord William the Grand Duke of Manchester that Lady Mariam of Yoreshire was safe and coming under the safety of Sir Warren of Sheffield. The Duke of Sheffield swore an oath that those responsible for attacking Lady Mariam would be hunted down and paid grievously for their deeds. The group stayed at Sheffield Castle and would leave with added guards the next morning
It was late afternoon when they arrived and Sir William the Grand Duke greeted us with great pomp and ceremony. Lady Mariam perked up with a great smile and a lot of energy to meet her Uncle. Lady Catherine and her Cousins Anne, Constance, and Cousin William II were there as well. There was a salute of guns and the blowing of horns upon their exit from the carriage that carried them.
The feast that ensued seemed more for the men, but it was also a time for Lady Mariam to share the tale of their attack and subsequent escape. Mariam credited Kristina for their escape, and Kristina said Lady Mariam was a heroine as well.
Lord William’s doctor had checked Kristina’s wound, opening an infected area to drain and be bandaged. The Duchess checked on Kristina and commended her bravery and wit. Your Uncle told me you’re his niece and wondered if there might be any recognition of your bravery in saving our niece Lady Mariam.
Krissy tried to shrug off the idea, saying, “It was my duty to serve her and in saving her I saved myself.”
The following day Mariam went with Anne as Anne chose the material and design of her wedding dress. The second day, Lady Mariam would select her gown of powder blue silk to be the Lady in Waiting at Anne’s side.
The day before they were to return to Yoreshire, at a formal meal called by the Duke and Duchess, the festivity began in the Throne room of the Grand Duke. He called forth Mariam and Kristina and asked Kristina to bow before the throne. I place on your head a humble laurel wreath and present you with the honor of the Golden Rose and Arrow. Rise, Lady Kristina of Yore, may your heroism be long remembered.”
The first thing Kristina heard was clapping coming from her side; it was Lady Mariam. “Rise Sister, your courage at last is recognized.”

Lady, Heroine, Bride...
Escorted by an elite number of riders from The Grand Duke of Manchester; Lady Mariam and Lady Kristina returned to a grand welcome to Yoreshire.
Yore was known for its celebrations, holidays such as Christmas, and even more, such occasions as when Lady Mariam and Kristina might have been hurt in their travels. And now that Kristina had been anointed and made officially a Lady.
Despite all the recognition and to be received as Lady Kristina, Kristina was most pleased to be back at Yore. Kristina was surprised when the coach door was open and Sir Drake was there to present his hand to help her down from the carriage. He helped Lady Mariam out as well; Mariam was warmly greeted by her parents the Duke and Duchess of Yore and all of Yore.
Drake was in awe of the Rose and Arrow Medallion Kristina was wearing. He remarked, “It is a great honor but I thought the medallion should have been larger.”
Kristina smiled and explained, “It is not for a man, but made appropriate for a woman to wear. Would you mind if I wore it as part of my bridal ensemble?”
After he agreed, she asked, “Can we set a day for our wedding day?"
As they were talking, Duke Richard of Yore had a horn blown that he would soon speak. He said, “I want to announce a three-day festival a week from today. It will be to celebrate Lady Mariam and Lady Kristina’s safe return. I the Duke of Yore and the Duchess will give special recognition to Lady Kristina for her heroism.
Kristina sees her mother and sisters and is suddenly choked with a strong family longing to be with them. It may not be ladylike, but she needs to be with them. She closes out the world around her and pulls them in for a family hug. They hear those around them drawing in breaths and sounds of appreciating them. They turn and it is the common people and Karen waves them into a hug. Soon they are in a sea of people.
Kristina turns and looks at Lady Mariam and her parents. They are together, but facing Kristina’s family, and everyone is clapping. Mariam’s eyes and Kristina’s look at one another. Kristina reads Mariam’s lips as she says, “Love you.”
It is a while before the crowds break up and people go their different ways. Kristina, her family, and Drake make their way to their home. Kristina is sitting on Drake’s lap as they sit around the table. Bread, cheese, and some wine are served. Water is heated for tea.
Everyone wants to hear Kristina’s story of what happened. Kristina looks to her mother and then Kelly the youngest. Karen nods her head it is okay to tell the story with Kelly there.
Everyone gasped when Krissy reached the attack on the carriage, and the one who entered and threatened Mariam and took their daggers. He held a knife to Lady Mariam, “Robin,” she said, “froze as she slowly sunk the hat pin into Robin’s chest and brought a larger dagger out of hiding and to his throat.” One could hear Mariam was nervous as Krissy took charge and then went up to the driver’s perch and took the reins.
Kari cheerfully said, “That showed them who was in control.”
The family was enthralled as Krissy mentioned she turned onto the road for their Uncle and Aunt’s estate. I had been stabbed by the bandit coach driver. But I stabbed him back and pushed him off the carriage. And now the injury was getting to me, just as I saw their house and we were next to the beginning of the farm. Hope rejuvenated me and we proceeded. Cousin William soon came and took over and got us to the house.
Her mother and sisters began asking questions, and in all the discussion there were tears of joy for Krissy being a heroine and now safely home. Drake took Krissy for a walk, first going around Yore. After being greeted by many well-wishers, they walked through the royal gardens, which the public couldn’t walk through.
Sitting on a bench, Drake’s eyes were tearing, “I love you, and the thought I could have lost you; softens this knight’s heart. The Duke has approved me to train a special group to guard you and Lady Mariam.”
He said, “I would prefer you withdraw from Lady Mariam’s service. The gift from the Duke of Manchester and the gift you will receive from Duke Richard and the Duchess will provide ample funds to permit you to withdraw from her service.”
Kristina hugs Drake and whispers, “But I will still go with her and help at her wedding. We have bonded and we are special friends. If she moves to Carlton, I will not follow her there. My place will be with you. Though I am told you will often be absent from me, and it will be me fearing for your safety.”
“Your father is a fortunate Knight who has retired and misses only one digit.”
Drake laughs, “He is not quite retired; he has been called back to better train the soldiers of the shire. Plus, a knight is never fully safe, we make enemies along the way who would still like to see one dead, even long after a conflict has passed.”
Kristina now hugs and holds Drake; she understands better what it means to have fallen in love with a knight. The rise of her passion and body heat as they hug surprises her. Her nether regions yearn to take him inside her.
She regrets that she has agreed with her mother and others, not to do so.
She says, “Drake, (I am having trouble resisting you) I insist we find some way to set a wedding date.”
Kristina, ‘I feel like a little girl inside, ready to burst, the strong emotions that come with being a girl are unnerving and seem silly to me. But it’s a wonderful silliness and I delight in being a woman. I would not undo the past.
Drake informed me that we will have a box of seats in the Cathedral from now on. The Royal family had seats; William of Yore was to do some readings. We appreciated that it was a formal worship service. It affirmed her thought that she, Kristina, a boy now a woman, had a place in God’s kingdom. Today, she was recognized and honored as Kristina Thomas. My mother’s hand patting my shoulder was a valued confirmation.
Following the service, Lace found Kristina, “This confirms what God has done with you. A prophetess doesn’t always get to see the light from uncertain times,” Lace hugged Kristina, “Please, know I am here for you. More blessings will come, receive the joy and let it bubble up inside you.”
Kristina wanted and tried to ask if she meant having children, but there were too many interruptions, and people came between them until they were no longer together.
The next day was for the Duke to honor Kristina; among the gifts were two horses, a carriage, and over a thousand pounds. The gifts were too much for Kristina. He whispered a question, and upon hearing her answer, he pronounced: Lady Kristina and Sir Drake, a knight of my court. You are to marry by the second moon from now. I pray you allow me to stand for your Father Thomas and Family.”
Kristina could have swooned and passed out with that pronouncement; tears filled her eyes as she smiled, curtsied, and professed, “I would be honored.”
Lady Mariam could not be constrained any longer and came to Kristina and wrapped her in a hug.
That day Kristina stayed home, her mother had finished her wedding gown and today was her first fitting. She used clean underclothes, but not the ones she would wear on her wedding day. “Mother, this is so luscious; the silk feels like a tingling stream going down my body. I can’t believe my breasts are nestled in this finery. If this were my wedding day, I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on the wedding or Drake.”
Mother said, “Because of your heroics, Kari will also get a beautiful wedding gown.”
“Mother, I haven’t seen you create such a lovely gown?”
Mother replied, “I am so happy, and I agree; with you I have outdone myself. I guess it is a mother’s pride. I will add more detail, but the detailing on the lace takes much more time.”
“Mother, would you believe as Christopher this was a dream I never believed could happen? I love being your daughter.”
Mother said, “Lady Mariam told me you wished you could serve her and be like her. Can that be true? Why didn’t you ever tell me?”
Kristina said, “When I told Father, he told me not to think or say anything so foolish. That it could cause him to lose his job at the cathedral. If I did not stop my dreams, it made me think I was sinful for having them.”
“After I first begged from her, that was when Lady Mariam first thought that I looked like her and could help her; it was like a dream come true.”
Her mother said, “I admit you were an unusually caring son. I am sorry but not fully surprised that your father reacted that way. He usually told me things like that, but that time he didn’t. Surely, he knew I would have said something.”
Kristina finished the fitting, and her mother helped her out of the wedding gown.
This was one of the things Kristina would get upset about. She had never been old enough to be invited to the manly outings.
While the women sought to fuss over the bride, the men decided much of the wedding particulars. They focused on the gathering of Knights, the groom being the head of the house, and the banquet being a feast worthy of the honored guests.
Drake tempered the planning by saying, “She fits the character of a hero and has been honored as such. But she’s, a young lady, and prone to celebrating love, elegance, and others. She’s my princess, we need to celebrate both her knight and my lady so she and those she cares for enjoy the day.”
Ron Stark, another knight, spoke up, “You’re not going soft on us are you?”
“Contrary to your thinking, this is her day and mine; if you can understand so be it, if not too bad.”
Beth, Mariam’s head servant overheard the conversation from the hall and went her way pleased.
Krissy was happy to be with Lady Marie; she had the wisdom of already being married to a knight, as knowing foods Drake liked. Her would-be mother-in-law, told her, “To be you’re to be a daughter and you can either see me as a second mom, or Marie; I want us to be friends.”
Krissy cheered up, “Then Mom and Marie, it will be. I thank you for bringing the dresses you had made for me.”
“I noticed Drake has scars I know nothing about, and I suspect there may be more…”
Marie interrupted, “I nursed him back from some, and he and others took care of bruises and injuries untold. It will be for you and him to discover and be there for one another. He has some years on you but time will take care of that. Like myself, you are strong and loving; love him and the family you’ll be blessed with, and things will take care of themselves. Have the wisdom to call upon your mother or me when you want, first trust your own heart and mind.”
“Keep Lady Mariam as your friend. You have a special relationship with her as I do with the Duchess.”
The wedding day had, and Lady Mariam invited Kristina to the room on the third floor. A bath was made there and she bathed with lavender and rose petals in the water. Betsy helped to wash her. Krissy breasts were now like big lush pears sparkling from the water that ran down her body the areolas stood out like they were excited for the day. Mariam was there to share the joy with her friend.
“I thought I’d be first, but I delight in learning now through you. I am glad that your time is behind you, and the juices you have should be pleasing to him. This is the dream from when I first knew you. I believe we both prayed it would somehow come to pass.”
With but the woman that is to be under the wedding dress, Kristina curtsied to Mariam, “I am the lady you helped shape me to be.”
A corset was wrapped around Krissy while Betsy and Mariam helped pull and tighten the cords. Kristina’s waist shrank by three, four, and finally five inches. They paused three times to allow her body and breath to adjust. Beth assisted Betsy with her hair and makeup. Krissy chose not to appear like a princess, yet she aimed to be as beautiful as she naturally could be. And she was beautiful.
Kristina was invited to Lady Mariam’s room as she got dressed and made up for the wedding. Kristina had turned away at points. Lady Mariam gave a slight giggle, “I appreciate that, but I invited you because we’re both young women and you’re my special friend. Kristina was amazed because Lady Mariam turned into a princess right before her eyes.
When she was finished and they were ready to go to the Cathedral; Betsy arrived with two white, long-stemmed roses. Mariam asked would you do me the honor of carrying this rose along with your bouquet?”
Lady Mariam went to sit with her parents in the royal box.
Kristina was soon with her family. Kari would be the Maid of Honor, Kate was a Bridesmaid, and Kelly was her Flower Girl. Karen, the Mother of the Bride would escort her down and present Kristina as the Bride.
When the processional began, Kristina was thrilled to see the Grand Duke of Manchester sitting in the Royal Box with the Duke and Duchess of Yore. There was her Uncle and Aunt. The Bride’s side was full of cousins, and townspeople.
Royalty and special friends filled Drake’s side of the church. The wide aisle was flanked with knights and their swords at their sides. She knew that was one of the concessions that Drake had asked for to honor her.
When she saw Drake, her eyes felt emotions well up inside of her. It was a mixture of love and sensual feelings that became warmer than she had ever felt before. She kept her composure, even though she knew her cheeks blushed.
Once her mother officially presented her in marriage, she took hold of Drake’s hand; she felt inside that the two were one. She loved reciting her vows from memory, her eyes glazed wet as Drake placed her ring on her finger, and the affectionate kiss sealed the marriage covenant.
Their reception, the marriage bed, and a honeymoon were not awaited by them…

The formal wedding was beautiful, and now their reception, the marriage bed, and their honeymoon awaited them… Kristina longed to be Drake’s wife and experience the joy of knowing that she was fully a woman. Her sister Kari had long been looked upon by her mother as the one who would marry and experience the joy the two of them could share.
Drake had been impressed when Kristina became Lady Mariam’s servant, and she, Kristina, was like Mariam. The more Kristina had found a special place with Mariam, the more it endeared Kristina to Drake. He saw Kristina more as a friend with a special place in Lady Mariam than a servant. Mariam had become more joyful, and after Mariam’s ill-fated trip to Carlton, with the Duke her father; Kristina's position with them was more precious. Kristina had denied any role in saving the Duke and his daughter, but Drake believed she had.
During their first dance, Drake said, “Now you can share with me your role in protecting the Royal Family?”
Kristina said, “You can only know, as you cannot spill the confidence the Duke places in you; so it was for me with the Duke and Mariam. The story has always been told without mention of me.”
The strong Knight kissed her, lifted her, and spun around with her in his arms. The hot passion of the kiss lasted long after Kristina was back on her feet. She knew she was loved and held in the highest esteem by him. Her face had turned red and for a moment she was embarrassed to be kissed in public with such a passionate kiss. As they danced around the dance floor, other knights and noblemen lifted their glasses and saluted Drake. “Drake, I am embarrassed that our love feels like a well-read book.”
Drake responded, “Every man should wish he had the Bride I do. It is known why the Grand Duke of Manchester honored you. You were a hero where men had failed. Your beauty runs with the blood of a hero. Do you not know why I am esteemed by the other knights? They think I have the best of all worlds in you. You seem to understand me.”
Our conversation was entwined with our visiting with others. Lady Mariam curtsied to Kristina and asked permission to dance with Sir Drake. Kristina felt delighted that Mariam wanted in with Kristina’s story.
The party was still going on when Drake took Kristina to a house she knew nothing about and found a note from her mother-in-law that she left a nightgown for Kristina in her new bedroom. Drake shared that he had purchased it only two weeks ago.
Kristina brushed her as Drake came and whisked her off to their wedding bed. He became every bride’s wish for a man who was gentle yet full of passion. He took time to please Kristina, and she him. They heard people talking and celebrating on their way home, and Drake was again making love to her.
Kristina giggled, and Drake asked why. “Because I am having you, and I cannot believe the joy I am having. What will people say if I have a baby early?”
Drake: “That’s not funny, you would have to stop the birth until after nine months!”
Kristina giggled again, “You have no understanding then do you, about babies and moms?”
She was now Lady Kristina, learning to make their house a home. She had three dishes that she had learned from Marie, her mother-in-law, and many soups, breads, and dinners she had and was still learning from her mother.
Drake enjoyed the large meals that came with hosting one family or another. Kristina wasn’t excited about another woman hovering over her shoulder while she cooked or set the table. However, it was generally better than having a bunch of knights and squires in their home.
Getting away to Mayfield was grand until she got sick one morning, and then the next. Lady Marie was the first to suspect that Kristina was pregnant. Her Father-in-law had been thinking ahead. He would have made the little cradle himself, but he was not a great craftsman. Drake’s Uncle George had done it and confessed to staining, buffing, and polishing it three times. Even the side railings sparkled as it rocked back and forth.
Kristina was relieved after two months when the morning sickness subsided.
Lady Mariam’s wedding was now at hand, but it was improper for Mariam to have Kristina in her wedding. Now as Mariam had been at her cousin’s wedding, Lady Catherine of Manchester and Essex was now with her at her wedding. Catherine and Kristina were delighted to have fun with Mariam. Both women spoke to Martin of Carlton. He couldn’t believe they were telling him what he needed to do to make love to his Bride Mariam.
Mariam was not betrothed to the most sensitive of men, nor was he volunteering to learn. Martin, however, made the mistake of belittling Kristina to the point Drake had taken offense. Fortunately, it was not Drake but two of Martin’s knights who placed a sack over his head and got the message across without a word.
Mariam’s Father, the Duke of Yoreshire, had turned a deaf ear, save the promise it would not happen again in his domain. “My daughter will be treated as royalty in your realm as she will in mine. The Days of Yore are to be known long into the future for the joy of our festivities.”
The wedding was beautiful; Martin was a gentleman proud to marry Lady Mariam. The two realms were united through the covenant of marriage. The sad part for Kristina was that Mariam’s permanent home was in Carlton.
(Though the Days of Yore, cannot be formally linked to the song, Have Yourself a Merry Christmas, nor can it be ruled out. The Shire of Yore had long ago been renamed; it was, however, a real place.)
It was late in the eighth month of Kristina’s pregnancy when Mariam arrived and stayed in her room. The bed was bigger in case Carlton would come to be with her. Mariam went to see Kristina as one lady to another. Mariam was able to share the news that she was in her second month of having missed her menstrual cycle and suspected she was with child.
Mariam felt Kristina’s abdomen when the child in Krissy was moving. The women giggled together; it would be another joy that they both shared. Lady Mariam said, “I will be pampered more than you for having more servants and Beth to care for her child.
Kristina said, “My mother says I will have different joys, not having the courts to respond to. It is true having a wet nurse will have its advantages for you.”
“Our next joy after Sheila’s birth, would be to purchase a riding carriage so we can visit his parents in Mayfield and Lady Mariam in Carlton.”
It was the third night of Krissy’s mother Karen staying with them and Kristina was now ready to give birth. Her sisters Kari, Kate, and Kelly were at the house helping their mother and comforting Krissy. Her womb didn’t want to open as wide as most mothers. She tore in giving birth and it was indeed a girl, but she was named Mary Ann because her mother said the baby looked more like Drake and his sister Mary.
Drake was a proud father, but within a week, it was known that she needed yet to give birth to a boy and another girl to be Sheila. Her mother had sewn the tare, but birthing more children would come with the added pain of a cut or a tare.
There was the joy of young Mary Ann finding Krissy’s breasts and nursing. Mariam had the joy of sharing two weeks of afternoons watching her friend nurse her baby. It was then time for her to return to Carlton with the confirmed news that she was with child. The Duke and Duchess of Yore had paid for Beth to be trained as a nurse and to care for Mariam’s child. One bruise that Mariam had when she came had healed, and Beth would be free to communicate any ill-treatment Mariam would receive in the future.
It was at six months that Kristina traveled with little Mary Ann to Carlton to be with Mariam at the birth of her first child. It was a journey that came with some trepidation, traveling across the country. Being a mother caused her to fear for her baby’s safety and the possibility of road bandits.
The birthing of a son came as great news to the house of Carlton. What wasn’t joyful to the sight of Kristina days later, was bruising on the back of Mariam’s legs. Her rage was dealt to Martin and contempt to the Duchess of Carlton who knew but was silent. The day before Kristina returned to Yore, Martin had an accident. He would recover but a scar would remain.
It was at ten months that Mary Ann could stand and soon walk. Kristina and Drake had decided that passion reached new heights in their relationship, and a child was conceived. And it was over twenty months that Kristina gave birth to Thomas Warren. Thomas was born bigger than Mary Ann and thus was born with much pain to Kristina. It would be over three years and a miscarriage that Sheila Mariam was born. Sheila had been Christopher’s imaginary friend since he was old enough to remember.
Kristina and Drake were married for over forty years, during which Drake acquired more scars and a limp, and he became the trainer of young knights. Those knights would lose no travelers under their care.
Thus were the days of Yore,
The End
