Town Princess

Town Princess

Almost every town probably has its rituals.

You know, the stuff that brings the neighbors together, have a bit of fun, remember the important stuff the past or celebrate the future.

My town’s ritual is a bit ... different.

It all started about ten years ago.

We had two stunning revelations that shook us to the core.

The first was the suicide of a teen named Brett Markson. He’d been popular, involved in local charities, always the first to step up when called upon, so his death came out of the blue to all of us.

Then came the second revelation.

The reason for the suicide was because Brett apparently had always felt like a girl on the inside, and couldn’t cope with what puberty was doing to his body.

We found this out because Brett’s sister found a diary, and there was one other thing the diary mentioned that seemed to stick with people.

Brett had apparently always wanted to be a princess for Halloween, but had always been too scared.

Some discussions later, Princess week was born.

During the last week of October, all the guys in the town put aside being “manly” and slip into dresses and heels.

But it’s more than clothes.

We have games, rides, music, and most importantly, the crowning of the Town Princess.

Whoever wins that crown acts as the town ambassador at all civic functions for a year, while always presenting themselves as the most lovely lady they can be.

And believe it or not, a couple of times, when their year was up, the princess has decided to make a transition to being a girl permanently.

So, come join us this year, if you’re in the neighborhood.

It might just make you learn something ...

End.

I vote for...

Dorothy as the permanant princess. After all she is girly and giving....

Ok so giving out girl germs to infect every male she "huggles" thus turning them into females is a bit on the dramatic side. Still she is very giving...

To bad she doesn't take them back!

pfft

Your the Princess. After all it was clearly your fault im female now!

As an ignorant and very rare commenter

I hesitate to join the debate, that being said, I "of course" will. No question, Dorothy, who always leaves such nice comments on others work, and does so well herself, IS the one and only Princess. So let it be written, so let it be done. Just an old fat crippled ex-Cop washing through.

I am a Proud mostly Native American woman. I am bi-polar. I am married, and mother to three boys. I hope we can be friends.

you have me blushing

I just try to be as kind to others as others have been kind to me.

Reminds Me a Bit...

...of this recent YouTube video about a boys' school somewhere in South America that has members of each class run for the office of Girl, where for one month there are activities and presentations where the class winners dress and behave accordingly.

(The vagueness about the location -- and the use of a generic name for the school which doesn't seem to match the three letters one can read on the boys' jackets -- make me wonder about authenticity. But if it's a hoax, it's an awfully elaborate one.)

How About...

Daphne Xu's picture

How about a story about one such boy or man, and his week as a princess? Perhaps a story about an ordinary person, not one to become that year's Town Princess. I'm curious what such a thing would be like for him? I suppose since he'd already gone through it for ten years, it would seem natural and straightforward.

Come to think of it, perhaps such a tradition might lead to relaxation of the year-round norms of dress after the first few years.

It's nice to speculate. It's also nice to read a nice and sweet (if a bit bittersweet) story after reading my previous story.

Possibly

I think I have a couple highly-incomplete stories where something like this happens, as part of the larger story. I'm also sure I have a couple such ideas scattered throughout my ideas files. Who knows what the next story I actually finish will be like?

Interesting concept

I just discovered this story a few years after you wrote it. What a great 'excuse' to explore your femme side. I think you could explore this concept into another story or two... as generations of males pass thru this town's annual 'holiday'... older brother (or sister) egging on younger brothers. I always enjoy your work.

no sequel planned, Donna.

but you never know with my muse.
