Tuck

by Ellen Hayes
"Jeeezus," I said, staring into the mirror.

"That worked better than I thought," she said, half stunned herself.

The finished product was good enough that I, who looked at myself in the mirror a lot, could _not_ see any flaws. I could almost see myself, from before, under the wig and makeup and clothes, but only barely.

Nobody who wasn't expecting it would see a damned thing, that's for sure.

Let me rephrase that. Nobody, who wasn't expecting anything, would see anything unusual. Well... Me, Tuck, was not going to be seen at school today.

There was a lot to see, though.

Admin Note: Originally published on BigCloset TopShelf on Sunday 08-20-2006 at 2:32:00 pm, this retro classic was pulled out of the closet, and re-presented for our newer readers. This serial is a long running favorite of our community. Originally starting with Chapter 1 in 1997, Tuck is THE longest running serial that I am aware of, updated sporadically every year! At one time, we did host all of Ellen's Chapters. I will work to try and re-secure their presence back onto BCTS. Currently, everything before Chapter 120 can be located here on Ellen's Tuck Page. since the chapter links below on this page are not pointing to anything at the moment. All of the newer Tuck Chapters are updated there as well. We do host Chapters 120 on up.

Tuck

I have started reading the series at fictionmania. Tucker becomes Valerie, the biker chick for Hallowween*foreshadowing Valerie in Tuck Squared & The Taken By Rachel Greenham.

I hope this isn't assigned reading. If so I hope she included the recipes this time. Between her and Bailey Summers I have a sink full of dirty dishes after each chapter.

I just Tuck a quick read... :-)

Ellen,
Yet another terrific chapter! I can't decide whether I like the Tuck-centric chapters (with the datetimes) or these full-cast chapters better. I particularly like the way each of the characters has his or her own distinctive personality, and the way we see their unique features coming out.
I'm looking forward to the next chapter. (I peeked at your website and read the note on your progress on #111. So sue me. :-)

Possibly the wrong place to c

Possibly the wrong place to comment but can something be done about Jody please, makes me sad 'cos I've been in exactly her position before and knowing there is no way out is worse than knowing that you got it wrong in the first place. And I just really feel for her if you see what I mean. Yeah I'm soppy. :)

The Legendary Lost Ninja

Tucker one slip

Ellen, very well done.

I agree with JC though. Jody was trying to appologize and everyone was taking her wrong and scaring her to death. She was not part of what happened and she is a victim, like Tuck. She was trying to make it right, and everyone is pulling her down. I can see how she may look guilty by being a cheerleader. I have seen cases of this also. It is like the communistic witch hunt that the government did in the 20's and 30's. The bases of the hatred was unfounded. Please let Jody get out of it, in some way. She is the only girl that has tried to make ammends, and she really does not deserve the garbage that is happening to her. I have been in her postion also, and I understand what she is going through. Plus the predjudice attitude of her family.

Granted Being a cheerleader, or a football player, or sports athlete, is a liability at this time. Maybe it is justified in some of the cases, but I doubt all of the players are neanderthals as the few who are make it look they are. I would like it to see if the good people of both groups would just up and quit. Leaving the neanderthals to fend for themselves. I know athletes that have a sense of honor and would not be party to what has happened. they would also be champions for the weak to help defend them. I would like them to step forward, and help find who the true culprits are that started the whole mess. Why isn't Tuck telling anyone about what ahppened? Surly he remembers who started it all?

It seems most of the girls on the cheer team deserve what they are going to get. Jody is not one of them.

Looking forward to more of your story Ellen.

Jody's a victim?

I've only just noticed these comments, and I wonder what produced this odd determination to give Jody a free pass?

"Jody was trying to appologize and everyone was taking her wrong and scaring her to death. She was not part of what happened and she is a victim, like Tuck. She was trying to make it right, and everyone is pulling her down."

How was Jody "not part of what happened"? She was present when Tuck was assulted, and even if she did not actually hit him, she apparently stood and watched while her friends put the boot in rather than intervening or at least going to get help. I hardly think this makes her a victim like Tuck, who was after all nearly beaten to death, rather than merely suffering a few sleepless nights.

As for Jody's attempts to apologise, I don't think they really qualify as "trying to make it right". No apology, or anything else, can ever do that, and Jody's motives seem entirely self-serving. To quote "Burning Bridges":

"Because, Holly, maybe if we apologize, he won't do something?"
"How do you know where he is?"
"They said it in the newspaper, where he went-"
"Did- Did they say anything about... you know-"
Jody shook her head. "Just where he was taken... They didn't even say his name, but they mentioned the helicopter flight and where it went."

Or again, later in the same chapter.

"It was a STUPID idea-"
"No it fucking WASN'T!" Jody yelled back. "Why the fuck do you think we got suspended, huh? Some kind of shit with his parents or something, they threatened the school with a lawsuit... MAYBE if we could APOLOGIZE to them, they won't put us in fucking JAIL?" Holly didn't say anything to that. "Did you ever think of THAT?"
"I don't think saying 'sorry' is gonna work on them, Jody," Holly said grimly as she pulled up to the exit gate.

I'm with Holly on this one. Saying sorry and shedding a couple of crocodile tears doesn't earn Jody absolution in my book. Slightly less guilty than some of the other cheerleaders? Just maybe. Innocent, or a victim? No way. Being scared is the least Jody deserves.

As regards the guilt of other cheerleaders, football players or athletes, I am reminded of the words of Tacitus:

"A shocking crime was committed on the unscrupulous initiative of few individuals, with the blessing of more, and amid the passive acquiescence of all."

The few would not have assaulted Tuck if they had feared the ostracism of their peers. The fact that they did assault Tuck suggests that they expected at least the passive acquiescence of their friends. A final quotation, from Albert Einstein this time:

"The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing."

Best wishes, Andrea.

Best wishes, Andrea.

hmm,

"The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing."

Best wishes, Andrea.

Yes, and all ways this may be tru to our minds after the fact; but peer pressure can be equally forceful.

It's like one of those word problems in algebra where the only solution is a head-on collision between Train A going 60 mph and Train B going 80 mph. :)

Halloween Tucker

erin's picture

One of the best Halloween stories ever is "Tucked In" by Ellen Hayes, the first story in the Tuck series. It's available here at BigCloset and on Ellen's own website and FM. It can be read as an independent story, though it's a heckuva appetizer.

See, you thought this was going to be about Halloween food--and you were right, sort of. :)
